Channing Tatum covers GQ: ‘I’m probably a pretty high-functioning alcoholic’

0614 COVER hi res[4]

At this point, I think we all understand that Channing Tatum is the best. There’s nothing you can really slam him for. Seriously. Try it. You want to say that he’s not a talented actor? He can do action and comedy really, really well, which is more than most major actors out there. You want to say he’s not attractive? Millions of women find him sexy (including my mom and probably your mom too). You want to say he’s a big jerk? You can’t say that. Because he isn’t. He’s funny, charming, respectful, and everyone who works with him just adores him. Channing Tatum is the 21st century movie star – accessible, quietly talented, smarter than people realize, humble and ambitious. Anyway, Channing covers the new issue of GQ – you can read the full piece here (it obviously includes glowing quotes about Channing being awesome from everyone). Some highlights:

On alcohol: “I probably drink too much, you know. My wife, that’s what she bought into.… I’m probably a pretty high-functioning, I guess, you know, I would say, alcoholic, I guess. There’s probably a tendency to escape. I equate it to creativity, and I definitely equate it to having a good time.”

On Gambit: “The only superhero I really followed.… He was the most real to me: smoking, drinking, women-loving, thief. He just looked cool to me. I’ve always loved him. And obviously he’s Cajun.”

On his invisible friend: “His name was Boy. I think I just lived in an imaginary world. I was always playing war in the woods, people are chasing me… I wasn’t doing it because I was desperate for friends. I had friends.”

On the TV show, The Biggest Loser: “I really do love it. It’s terrible and it’s bad, but I really do think it’s because I have an inner fat kid in me. I can completely lose myself into just absolutely satisfying things—a really amazing cheeseburger, a pizza, good fries, a beer. I enjoy being comfortable and eating whatever the hell I like.”

On cake: “I just love cake. Confetti cake, to be specific. It has little colored candies inside the cake, and then you get the confetti icing, which is really hard to find sometimes. It’s really hard to explain to people, because it’s not icing with sprinkles on top. It’s icing that actually has candies inside of it. It’s Funfetti icing. It’s a beautiful mix. It is an angel sent from heaven.”

On what Jonah Hill told Tatum he would do if Tatum was correct in his prediction that 21 Jump Street would break $35 million its opening weekend: “I will kiss your tip! I will kiss the tip of your d–k through your underwear if we make $35 million.”

Tatum on the bet: “I haven’t made him do it yet. For obvious reasons. That’s a bad bet to lose—it’s not too good to win, either. But definitely the shame of it would be enjoyable. It’s my trump card, for sure. He tries not to bring it up at all costs. Unless he did something horrible to me, I don’t know if I could ever cash it in. It would change our relationship forever.”

[From GQ]

Channing has talked about his “inner fat kid” before, and I believe him. I believe he only stays in shape because of his job – he would prefer to sit on a porch somewhere, drinking beer and eating ribs, Funions and confetti cake. Since I’m food-obsessed, I will say that I recently had a confetti cake Blizzard at Dairy Queen and I was really let down. As for the “high functioning alcoholic” thing – I think he just likes to drink…? There’s a difference between liking alcohol and needing alcohol to function. Channing just likes to drink. It’s not about alcoholism…?

This is how powerful Channing is – he just mentions in an interview (probably done a few months ago) that he loves Gambit, and wouldn’t you know, he gets cast as Gambit. That was just announced last week. Perfect timing, Chan.

I don’t think Channing Tatum is the best. I think he looks like a potato and he can be funny sure, but I don’t find him that appealing on screen. I guess he’s a nice guy, but he has the personality of a frat bro.

Therefore he’s not the best. Easy! He is 100000000000% WRONG for Gambit as well. A disastuh.

    • magpie says:

That’s why he’s called Charming Potato! This is my fave celeb nick name ever!

    • Clara says:

Honestly, I somewhat get the appeal. He’s a nice next door kinda guy. And he’s an assiduous worker. Nice with the fans. A more toned down on the nitro male equivalent of JLaw. But he’s just so bland as an actor. Whenever he acts I can only see a muscle head. But hey if two times Academy Award nominee Jonah Hill extraordinaire can do it, I don’t see why Charming Potato can’t. At least he’s not a douche like Hill.
      Where did the standards go?

      • Kali says:

Have a look at the trailer for “Foxcatcher”, I just saw it earlier tonight. It could possibly be the thing to push Channing to Channing Tatum, Oscar nominee.

      • Clara says:

Yeah… I’ve read the reviews. With the box office of 22 Jump Street and Jupiter, it’s as good as a sure thing. It’s from the same guy that did Moneyball, just better and you can never go wrong with an all white male cast cuz God forbid, nobody’s been telling tales about them since forever. Sure it doesn’t take from their performances, Ruffalo’s always good and I’ve liked Carell since Seeking a Friend, though Williams did it first in One Hour Photo.
Biases will be biases, I guess.

    • Jessica says:

LMAO!! He does look like a potato.. lol.. I almost had coffee come shooting out my nose.. LOL

    • Selina says:

He’s good for Gambit: a bad boy with a good heart? He’s basically played that already with his stripper movie. When he gets in shape and dedicates himself to the voice, which he’s already practicing, he’ll be great.

    • Camille (The Original) says:

Completely agree with you Jen! I don’t find him ‘the best’, he’s as exciting as white bread toast. He has zero charisma to me and I find him very unattractive, very ‘potato head’ to me too.

  2. magpie says:

I think Charming Potato is smart enough to know what “high functioning alcoholic” means. He probably drinks quite a bit every night (except when working long hours). It’s very European in a way.

    • Lori says:

Lots of people with ADHD self mediate with alcohol and sugar.

      • Chiara says:

I agree with my fellow europeans here. There’s the assumption that Europe is all one. Every country has different drinking cultures and even each country has different demographics that drink different from each other. As a late 30 italian I can tell you that yes, we like our 1 glass of quality wine at dinner (not lunch) instead of a gallon of beer, or half a bottle of whisky, or (horror) a Coke. Never ask for a Coke at dinner in Italy, you could risk your life 🙂

    • Em' says:

Is it really European? It’s a bit of a cliché and no offense but what does that even mean?

I mean I live in Europe yes but I am French, I am not German, I am not British, not Italian, not Greek, Esotnian… and so on and so on.
And even thought I am French, and I love wine, I don’t drink alcohol every day, nor do the vast majority of my friends and family.

But I don’t know what are the habits of my fellow Europeans ! 😉 😉

    • MsT_Shady says:

      @Magpie

What do you mean: “it’s very European in a way.”? Do you think that we all get drink every night??!!

Trust me- the convention is more to have a glass of wine with dinner or a good brandy as an aperitif.

Those binge drinkers are giving us a bad name! ;0)

      • magpie says:

Sorry, I’ve seen how the English hit the pubs…didn’t mean to put everyone in the same lot.

    • Chiara says:

  3. Patricia says:

That cover photo looks like am poorly rendered middle schooler’s portrait. The proportions of his head, neck, and arm are completely off. Am I the only one seeing this?

  4. Esmom says:

Maybe it’s the styling, but he looks so much less beefy than usual in the pink shirt photo. No inner fat kid visible there.

In my experience, people who joke about being alcoholics are worried about their alcohol consumption but not quite ready to do anything about it.

    • magpie says:

I think that’s a pretty good staement. Like they know they drink too much, that it’s not healthy, but since they can work and stop for periods they put off quiting because they’re far from “rock bottom”.

    • RJ says:

Perhaps, but I think Kaiser defined it well when she said there’s a difference between liking alcohol and needing it to function. It’s a grey area, because not everyone who drinks “a lot” is necessarily an alcoholic. From what medical science says alcoholism is disease like diabetes and cancer, and most who suffer from it are genetically predisposed.

Aside from that, he is looks good here and does seem like a good egg. I never paid him much attention until I saw him in Magic Mike-that white boy sure can move his hips!

      • Shiksa Goddess says:

Ugh. I secretly want to see Magic Mike. Very secretly. Like a put on some black clothes and sunglasses and go pick it up from the redbox so I’m not seen.

    • kt says:

The comment rubbed me the wrong me the wrong way at first, but the read the whole article he doesn’t sound like an alcoholic. He said he cut back when his daughter was born, and that he won’t drink during the Magic Mike 2 production (4 months). Alcoholics don’t have that kind of self-control.

Anyway, I think he’s more like the type who likes to have a beer every night at dinner. Maybe more on the weekends. But he won’t go crazy without it.

      • Bobbiesue says:

Maybe it’s been suggested to him by people–who love him and perhaps don’t drink or drink less than he–that he is “a functioning alcoholic.” Many men I know drink beer, different times of the day, perhaps everyday. When I was married I believed my husband was an alcoholic because I didn’t drink that much. Maybe he didn’t think there was anything wrong but other people in his life do.

      • Melanie says:

Alcoholics don’t have that self-control??? LOL. Many alcoholics go very long stretches without drinking. That is a complete fallacy. Sorry, but it’s a hot button for me. My family is filled with alcoholics. Some still drink, some are in recovery and some are white-knuckling it. And those dry drunks are the most angry, downright mean people. I loathe being around them. That’s when you truly see that alcoholism isn’t about the drinking.

The most telling part of the quote for me is that his wife is the one that “bought into” his possible drinking problem. Huge red flag to me. It’s not something he accepts, she just drank the Kool-aid apparently. Usually the family knows long before the alcoholic.

People need to realize it’s not about the drinking, it’s the THINKING. It’s about what happens to an alcoholic when they drink, what their behavior is. How they react to life. High-functioning alcoholics are everywhere. They are in government, they are CEO’s, they are rich. And they are the common man/woman. It’s a progressive disease. It can be subtle, slow and cunning. But once it’s here, there is no ignoring it.

      • kt says:

I don’t know. I’ve been thinking about this all day, and it does kind of seem odd. I kind of regret what I said. The “my wife bought into it” is the strangest–I agree with that. I don’t know what that’s supposed to mean, but it doesn’t sound good. Like did she say he was an alcoholic? Or she puts up with it because he doesn’t want to fix it?

I’m sorry, Melanie, I didn’t mean to offend anyone. I know alcoholics, too, but the ones I know are largely emotionally/mentally dependent on alcohol. And I’m willing to bet you know more than me, as I don’t drink and am not around alcohol a lot. (My parents don’t drink, and much of my family is mostly responsible regarding alcohol, as are my friends.) They HAVE to drink everyday and they do. And it makes them miserable and destructive. That’s more what I meant, I don’t think he’s at that point. But he should get a hold of it.

  5. blue marie says:

All right fine, you won me over.. Well played Potato, well played..

  6. Kiddo says:

I’m saying everything in that first paragraph. Blech, do not like.

  7. KikiLaRue says:

I just love him. He seems like such a genuine, honest and gentlemanly guy.

  8. vv007 says:

Not sure how I will feel about Tatum’s version of Gambit (I did like Taylor Kitsch in the role) but I guess if he is a fan of the character that’s a bonus. It makes me kind of twitchy when actors confess to knowing nothing about the characters they have taken on in the movies.

    • Jag says:

It won’t help. Taylor owned the part – other than needing work on his accent – but there is no way that Channing can give a wily, silver-tongued, wicked bad boy that can kick some butt kind of performance. There’s just no way. I’m sad now.

  9. magpie says:

It’s funny that there were all these actors Gosling/Ryan R/Chris Pine etc that were “headed” for A-list and Channing is the only one that really made it. No one would have bet on him several years ago.

    • Dani2 says:

Right? It’s funny how life works sometimes, I can’t think of a single noteworthy thing either Ryan or Chris have done in the last few years.

    • Huh? says:

Are you seriously implying Ryan isn’t A list???

      • zxcvbnm says:

He’s not. A lot of these actors are just popular in the internet among a certain demographic that clearly spent way too much time online.

      • kt says:

        Gosling is A-list. Reynolds isn’t.

      • magpie says:

Gosling didn’t turn hey girl into box office, he’s very reclusive and has slipped from that A-list cusp. He is B and RR is B–

  10. eliza says:

Not a fan of this dude. In my opinion he cannot act . I will say he was funny in 21 Jump Street but awful in everything else. I do not get the hype around him and to me is the absolute definition of a block head.

  11. Jess says:

I didn’t get the hype until I was forced to watch Magic Mike on a girls trip, now I think he’s adorable, and the dude can dance, which means he’s probably got some other good moves….

    • Kristen says:

Ditto this. I was like, “Whatever, he’s dumb and girls who swoon over him are dumb.” And then I saw Magic Mike and 21 Jump Street in the same week by accident, and realized I was suddenly willing to be president of the Channing Tatum Fan Club.

  12. Boodiba says:

I think he looks like a lumpy meathead too, though he may well be a nice guy.

  13. Renee28 says:

I don’t think he’s cute or a very good actor. There’s just nothing interesting about him.

  14. Talie says:

Good timing. He’s getting some of the best reviews of his career. I don’t think he’s an amazing actor, but he’s been lucky to work with directors who really want to work with him on his performances. Probably because the rumors are true and he is super nice.

    • lucy2 says:

Good point – I imagine he’s a hard working, nice guy, and his films do well – he must be in demand. I don’t find him to be an interesting actor, but he’s ok in the popcorn flicks he’s been doing.
I’d imagine he talked about Gambit because he was in talks for the role. He does handle his PR pretty well.

  15. Nev says:

    Yum.

  16. Kali says:

The Charming Potato has worn me down, I can’t fight it anymore. I think he’s delightful (or had good media training, or a bit of both….)

  17. roxy750 says:

    Nice photoshop….

  18. Rachel says:

Confetti cake with confetti icing is the best. Sadly Pillsbury replaced their confetti icing with vanilla icing with effing sprinkles several years ago. So I feel his pain. The real confetti icing is very hard to find.

Kaiser, you need to try confetti cake. I’ve never been a real fan of cake and ice cream, and I absolutely DESPISE cake IN ice cream. So cake blizzards of any kind are a no. Cake should be soft and fluffy. Putting it in ice cream just makes it hard and dry. No thank you.

  19. Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

Nice, his wife ‘bought into’ that he is an alcoholic? Hours long lectures where the person repeats themselves – AND get accused of being a shitty ‘listener’ if not wanting to listen to hours long rants, the smell of it that sticks to everything, the name calling, the chronic insults…..not a fun lifestyle. I would strongly advise young people on here to NOT get involved with an alcoholic – the evil stuff destroys the alcoholic and the alcoholic does his/her best to destroy their partners & kids life and soul. The wife likely didn’t know what she is getting into Or she grew up in an alchollic environment herself. A truly healthy environment in which to raise a kid.

    • Kelly says:

Not everyone who drinks “too” much falls into the abusive, fall down drunk category. We have such a culture of extremes: either an alcoholic or a teetoller, (I spelled that wrong, darn it), into porn or a frigid. Can’t someone acknowledge that they drink too much without being a fall down, abusive drunk? I doubt this guy is like that or he would hardly admit it.

  20. Jen34 says:

He is adorable. I doubt he is an alcoholic because true alcoholics rarely admit it even to themselves.

  21. Lisa says:

    He is really… not attractive.

  22. Penelope says:

    Love him.

  23. Shiksa Goddess says:

Physically he doesn’t do it for me, but he really does seem as though he is an extremely likeable guy. Love how he went into detail about the cake.

  24. Tig says:

He is too funny! That’s what wore me down- I don’t think he’s particularly good looking. And pls- the ” high functioning” crack was just that! But I am right with him on confetti cake!!

  25. mayamae says:

I dislike him for a reason that I’m sure sounds ridiculous. I don’t think a female up and coming actress would be applauded for being a former stripper. It’s a double standard and it gets on my nerves. I’ve seen him in a rom-com with Rachel McAdams and found him overly earnest, bland and boring. In a way he reminds me of John Travolta – pre masseuse offender. Travolta was considered sex on a stick, marginal actor, and came off a little dumb.

On a minor note, if someone else (perhaps JL) made that comment about alcoholism, they might be accused of mocking or making light of the subject.

  26. Beth says:

Psh. Join the club, Channing Tatum.

  27. G. says:

I know someone who worked with him and he says that Channing is the coolest dude ever. I just can’t hate on this guy.

  28. Jag says:

Nooooo not him as Gambit! I didn’t know he could make facial expressions until I saw that picture. He was horrible in G.I. Joe. How do you mess up a character in G.I. Joe? His delivery is so flat and monotone that it was distracting!

I’m absolutely bummed now. I was hoping they’d work on Taylor Kitsch’s accent and would bring him back because he totally had the bad boy vibe while being very handsome and athletic at the same time.

RIP Gambit movie. You could’ve been so great.

  29. P.J. says:

“On Gambit: “The only superhero I really followed.… He was the most real to me: smoking, drinking, women-loving, thief. He just looked cool to me. I’ve always loved him. And obviously he’s Cajun.”

Well, as someone who has been a HUGE X-Men fan since the incredibly awesome cartoon aired on tv when I was a little girl, I can only hope and pray that Channing does a significantly better job of filling Gambit’s shoes than Taylor Kitsch did back in ‘Wolverine’ 😒 I mean, for someone who so beautifully played a Southern boy in ‘Friday Night Lights’, he sure did drop the ball in that role! Ugh.

As Channing so beautifully pointed out, Gambit is a CANJUN guy with the very thick accent and swagger to match. That’s the biggest part of his charm and personality so it’s completely incomprehensible to me that the producers of ‘Wolverine’ allowed the character to become some weird Yankee/Texas hybrid who never once even uttered the word “cher.” I mean, that’s Gambit’s trademark!

I have no doubt our Charming Potato will knock everyone’s socks off with his portrayal though-he himself is a smooth talking Southern boy after all…Can’t.Wait.
