People Mag idly wonders if Eva Mendes & Ryan Gosling have broken up

My opinion: People Magazine never idly “wonders” if two people have broken up. Some People Mag editor has heard a rumor or some gossip somewhere, but the breakup story isn’t quite ready to publish without a nod from a publicist, so they just publish a story like this – “Are Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes on the Rocks?” What’s even weirder/funnier/sadder is that beyond the breakup speculation, the article is just an excuse to quote from some of the horrible reviews Ryan’s directorial debut has gotten:

While Ryan Gosling promotes his directorial debut, Lost River, at the Cannes Film Festival this week, one person has been conspicuously absent: his girlfriend of three years, Eva Mendes – who happens to costar in the film. Gosling, 33, hit the red carpet instead with Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks, who also appears in the trippy movie, which is set in an urban wasteland.

Critical response to the film was largely negative, with Time’s Richard Corliss calling it the most enthusiastically derided entry so far at this year’s festival. Another critic, The Telegraph’s Tim Robey, blasted it as a “crapocalypse.”

Still, added Corliss, “give some credit to Gosling … for his mad mash-up of horror and social statement, crackpot fantasy and Sundance-style meandering.” And Anne Thompson of Indiewire praised it as an “impressive impressionistic well-wrought debut.”

Meanwhile, Mendes, 40, has been keeping a low-profile, and the pair haven’t been photographed together since last November. But in February Mendes appeared to playfully shoot down breakup rumors, telling Ellen DeGeneres that her Valentine’s Day plans involved “watching The Notebook or something.”

The couple, who struck up a romance on the set of their 2012 drama The Place Beyond the Pines, have been tight-lipped about their relationship, but in February 2012 Mendes told Marie Claire that Gosling is “a dream costar,” adding, “He’s amazing.” And in May Gosling was photographed at the premiere of White Shadows wearing a necklace reading “Hugo” – the name of Mendes’s beloved dog.

[From People]

At this point… yeah, I really do want Ryan and Eva to break up. Is that mean? So be it. It would be one thing if they were a fun couple and they got pap’d all the time and they said stupid stuff about each other in the press. At least that would be interesting to cover. But they’re rarely seen together lately, Eva is always super bitchy about the relationship whenever she’s asked about it interviews, and the veil has been lifted on Ryan – he’s gone from The Perfect Boyfriend ™ to The Try-Hard Hipster. They just need to break up so they can rebrand themselves. It will save his career. I think hers is irreparable. Which is probably why (my opinion) she’s been hanging on so hard.

Annnd Disneyland prepares itself for another Gosling date show….

Bravo, Kaiser! I agree with every word. If we’re “mean” then so be it.

    • starrywonder says:

Yeah I’m sorry they suck. And his movie got booed. I read some really mean comments about it and I cracked up when plenty of people said, well ok Ryan can act. Stick with acting lmao. Eva is not a great actress. I don’t care who she’s dating.

    • Bridget says:

It says a lot that she didn’t go to Cannes when she’s actually in the movie, didn’t she go last year just to accompany him? They don’t have to do a whole lovey-dovey spectacle, but they have a product to sell.

      • Liv says:

I think so too. She would’ve been there – she has nothing going on career-wise, what else is she supposed to do?

What I find funny is that Lainey is still trying to convince us they are the greatest couple alive. Just a day before the People article was published she throws her story at us that we are all fangirls who want them to split and it was just because of the budget of the film that Eva wasn’t there. Please! This woman would swim through the ocean to get to Cannes!

      • mercy says:

Oh that was hilarious. “No budget for Eva.” Sure. Like she and Gosling don’t have enough resources of their own, or aren’t famous enough to be comped and given freebies galore. It seems like more than a few micro budget films managed to make their way to Cannes with full cast, and then some, dressed to the nines.

But the squawking spawn is so above the fangirls, and the mini vans, and all those phony celebs, don’t you know. Unless there’s an “A lister” in the room, or she has something to sell.

      • Liv says:

        😉

      • Bridget says:

I read Lainey, and there’s no way that she thinks those two are the greatest couple alive. All she said was that Eva and Ryan have been together through several different times when they’ve been rumored to be broken up, so not to get hyped up about Eva not being there. And you have to give the woman credit: she usually makes coherent points that are supported by facts and logic.

That’s not saying that I agree with her take – if I am remembering correctly that Eva was there last year, then it would have been while Gosling was supporting Only God Forgives, which would certainly not have paid for Eva’s trip to Cannes. It wouldn’t be weird that she skipped the festival if she wasn’t IN the movie, and if it wasn’t for his directorial debut. He needs to sell that movie, and it would have been good, free press for her to show (look at how much press Blake and Ryan got, after all). And it’s not like she’s working…

      • mercy says:

She’d have a hard time selling them as a great couple, so no, she probably doesn’t believe they are. But she has been on board with their PR when they were arranging photo shoots together in Thailand, Paris, etc. No questioning of how these photos came about from her. She just played along, sometimes with ‘exclusive’ details from an unnamed source.

She has been guilty of cherry picking her facts and tailoring her logic to suit whatever angle she wanted to go with, or just downplaying the negative. That would explain why she played the “no budget for Eva” card. As you said, it makes absolutely no sense. And her constant mocking, lecturing tone towards fangirls, like everyone reading is one, is as insufferable as some of them are.

TOK I agree. Just pull the plug already!

I’m “idly wondering” if I should clean my toilets today.
“Crapocalypse” Man the Cannes critics are a tough crowd.

    • mimif says:

I know I laughed at the crapocalypse, harsh and I love it.

      • kri says:

LOL crapocalypse. Nice. Next time I have a disagreement with Taco Bell I’m using that word. At any rate, this relationship has been over for months. Maybe the fact that she can’t quit her turbans killed .

  4. Ollyholly says:

Stupid question, but how is their relationship ruining his career or image?

I’m honestly wondering, I’ve never thought that before and I’m not sure if I’m just missing out on vital Gosling gossip somewhere?

    • Ash says:

I’m not sure. Maybe, because she’s never been considered a fantastic actress so maybe that plays into it. I have noticed that since dating Eva that his performances in films, at least that I’ve seen, haven’t been that strong or too convincing.

      • mercy says:

He hasn’t worked as much, and the scripts haven’t been as good. No actor can save a film like Gangster Squad. But I never got his appeal in films like Notebook and Crazy, Stupid Love, either. His best work has been in indies.

  5. Tiffany27 says:

His movie at Cannes sucked. He’s like a walking Urban Outfitters at this point.

  6. V says:

If I list all of the couples I might idly wonder about (have they broken up? should they break up? why the @#&% did they even get together?), do I get a free internship at People magazine? If they want me to only write about A to C list couples, I’ll settle for a free subscription to the magazine. (I’m afraid D-list couples will require a paid internship and daily free lunches)

  7. Izzy says:

Look! It’s the Turban of IDGAF!

  8. LadySlippers says:

Ryan really likes his women older than he is. I find that more fascinating than his movie bombing or whether his relationship is on the rocks.

  9. truthful says:

All I can say is “Well Said.” I agree with everything in this article.

    Free that man!!!

  10. mercy says:

She didn’t go to Cannes to support their movie with no explanation given, and it has received the most negative reviews I’ve seen coming out of Cannes so far (as many as that Princess Grace movie, and reportedly the biggest boos of the festival), yet they’ve escaped relatively unscathed in the tabloids and gossip sites, all things considered. I guess no one cares? They’ve probably broken up, or they knew the film was in for a critical drubbing and he wanted to spare her.

  11. Talie says:

Yes, Eva takes herself way, way too seriously. I actually think if he was with someone lighter, he would probably be prone to being a bit more cute about it. On the other hand, he also seems to have a limit to his sense of humor. These two aren’t Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield.

  12. Azurea says:

    I don’t really care for him, he’s really a one-note actor (the
poor misunderstood intense young outsider with charisma,)
but still, it must sting to take your first movie as a director to Cannes & be mocked. I feel bad for him.

  13. I Choose Me says:

Meh, wrapped in meh with a side of meh. I’m over you Ryan. Over I say!

*whispers* If it’s true that you and Eva are done, call me okay.

  14. Lizzy1013 says:

I thought they had already broken up? That’s why she replied that her valentines plans included watching “the notebook” — it was a joke because they were broken up.

  15. magpie says:

    I think she’s pregnant, that’s why she’s not there.

  16. joan says:

It’s funny — last time I saw her she was radiant, sultry, gorgeous, and funny and likeable. Not what I expected at all based on all the negativity.

She may be different in private but publicly she was so appealing. You’d think there’s some place for such a great-looking woman, with so many botched faces and bodies around.
