Who will play John Wilkes Booth: George Clooney or Johnny Depp?

George Clooney
It’s pretty much established that Liam Neeson will be playing President Abraham Lincoln in Steven Spielberg’s as-yet unfilmed Lincoln biopic, loosely based on Doris Kearns Goodwin’s book Team of Rivals about the Lincoln, his cabinet and the Civil War. But there are still big questions to be answered and big casting choices to be made. Will Liam Neeson play the president gay? Probably not, because Liam doesn’t think there’s enough evidence. But one of the biggest questions remaining is, who will play Lincoln’s assassin, John Wilkes Booth?

Booth was one of the most famous actors of his day, and he was photographed and talked about often enough that there is still, to this day, a large number of source materials to base the character. I saw a History Channel special on the assassination, and I was surprised at just how much stuff there still is of Booth’s. He was a handsome man, with dark hair and eyes and he wore his mutton-chops well. So who would make a good John Wilkes Booth? George Clooney? Johnny Depp? Or neither? Entertainment Weekly discusses:

There was a rumor going around that this President’s Day Steven Spielberg would finally announce a production start date for his long-awaited Abraham Lincoln biopic. No such luck. We’re still waiting to find out more about this intriguing project.

All we know at this point is that Liam Neeson (who picked up an Oscar nomination the last time he worked with Spielberg, in Schindler’s List) is attached to star as the stovepipe-hat-wearing commander in chief; that Sally Field might end up playing Mary Todd Lincoln; and that Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner (who nabbed an Oscar nomination for writing Spielberg’s Munich) has been hard at work on a script, which will reportedly focus on the last two months of Lincoln’s life.

What we were really hoping to find out today was who’ll be playing John Wilkes Booth, the Confederate loyalist who murdered Lincoln in 1865 during a play at Washington, D.C.’s Ford’s Theatre, then jumped onto the stage to take a bow before escaping into the night.

What makes that character so interesting, at least to us, is the fact that Booth was an actor.

And not just any actor, but one of the most famous and successful of his day. To put it in 21st-century terms, it’d be as if George Clooney or Johnny Depp had been implicated in the assassination of a president. Come to think of it, either of those two stars would be perfect for the part, if they’d be willing to grow a Booth-esque mustache. Or maybe Spielberg should go for a JWB-style three-name thespian. Johnny Lee Miller, perhaps? Or Daniel Day-Lewis? How about Sarah Jessica Parker?

From Entertainment Weekly

My vote would be for either Daniel Day-Lewis (their looks are strikingly similar) or Johnny Depp. Even though Booth was known a preening pretty-boy (the Clooney of his day), I doubt Clooney could pull off such a period-oriented role.

I really hope Sally Field hasn’t confirmed as Mary Todd Lincoln – that would not be good. How do I say this? They need to cast someone a bit “fuller” – Mary was a small, plump woman who was going through some really rough years. This is not the time for bubbly or spunky.

    Johnny Depp !
Georges acting is kind of mug for the camera acting. Thou I would really like if movies started to give unknows an break and start them off in movie. The public ( Me ) would like some new faces.
who knows? due tot he economic crisis these actors are too high priced for production companys to hire.

  2. Baholicious says:

I think Depp is definitely the better choice for Booth.

What about Kathy Bates for Mary Todd Lincoln?

  3. Patrice says:

Oh my God, are you kidding??? Depp all the way. The guy is AMAZING. And really, what’s the last great role that Cloony palyed other than his character in the ‘Ocean’s’ trilogy…

  4. Chiara says:

Clooney belongs in magazines as a male model. His acting consists of attempts at humor, with an underlying arrogance.

Depp … Daniel Day Lewis, could well carry the role.

  5. KateNonymous says:

If they really want to get JWB right, they’ll cast the less-famous brother of one of today’s most renowned actors. Now that would be meta.

  6. Enonymous says:

George Clooney is getting (and looking) way too old. He should just retire.

  7. Alaina says:

Kathy Bates is a great idea! Good one Baholicious! I hope this movie comes together soon. I’d love to see it.

  8. geronimo says:

Oh yeah, excellent idea, baho. Kathy Bates can do no wrong.

Depp or Day-Lewis? Depp I think.

  9. Goddess711 says:

George is a god but if they want a quality film with an actor who can act, Johnny Depp’s the man!
They’re both yummy, but Clooney’s not really anyone else except for Clooney in a film – can’t ever get into his characters. Johnny’s brilliant.

  10. clooney is too old!!

  11. ccoop says:

Johnny Depp for Booth. Kathy Bates would be genius as Mary Todd Lincoln.

  12. girlygirl says:

I can not believe there is only a 2 year age difference between George(47) and Johnny(45)! Anyway, age is not that important, I would vote Johnny any day. He has the looks and the skills.

  13. judy says:

One man who knew booth said he was the “best looking man i’ve ever seen”. That said, Clooney has the looks, but Depp the age. Both are extremely talented and good looking men also. adrienne Grenier could carry this role.

  14. barneslr says:

Oh, I definitely think Depp has the looks as well. Clooney–meh. But then, it is all a matter of taste. No question, though, that Depp is the better actor.

Tiny bit of useless trivia—Samuel Mudd, MD (“Your name is Mudd”) is the MD that treated Booth for his broken leg after the assassination. He was imprisoned in a cell on Dry Tortugas in the Gulf of Mexico. He was later pardoned because of a yellow fever outbreak…he was the only medical officer that could treat the guards and other prisoners. Because of his heroism, he was pardoned and allowed to go home.

A friend used to work on Dry Tortugas and I used to go visit, so I’ve been in Mudd’s cell. He’s pretty much the closest thing to a celebrity that they ever got there (well, until Playboy did shoot there about 10 years ago!)

  15. GrnMtGirl says:

    I want Johnny…

That said, I think he would be perfect for the role and I agree with the Kathy Bates idea; she is my favorite actress.

  16. tigerlille says:

Depp or Day Lewis without a doubt. George just isn’t a good enough actor.
Kathy Bates would be a fabulous Mary Todd Lincoln, but so would Sally Fields. Sally is a brilliant actress. Judi Dench would be a good choice too. Queen Victoria and Mary Todd Lincoln are very similair in looks and personality.

  17. barneslr says:

Sally Field? You know, I never in a million years would have thought of her, but she actually might be a good choice!

  18. TUPRBABE says:

Actually, Noah Wyle bears a striking resemblance to Booth, especially the eyes. I’d love to see him in the role myself.
Plus, as the other posters have mentioned, Clooney is definitely too old. Booth was 27 when he shot Lincoln.

  19. Excellent blog engine weblog! Keep it up!

  20. Janan says:

Johnny Depp should be the choice. He and Booth are about the same heigth, slim and gorgeous.George or Mathew are not suitable for the part since they both could pass for quite a bit older than 26,Booth’s age when he died.Johnny has the same dark eyes and hair.
