Angelina Jolie says her first ex-husband Jonny Lee Miller ‘is still a great friend’

YES! Buzzfeed has an excellent interview with Angelina Jolie but it’s barely about Maleficent. Instead, Buzzfeed got Angelina to talk about her first roles in Hollywood, the films that started her on this crazy super-stardom ride. These are some of my favorite interviews, where a movie star talks about their filmography and what they remember about some of their most famous (or infamous) roles. Buzzfeed got Angelina to talk about Hackers (YES!), Gia, and more. Some highlights:

Her first role, in Cyborg 2: “Oh, I threw up,” Jolie said, with a laugh, of her first viewing of the sci-fi movie. “I did. I saw it and I threw up. Just nausea. But the kickboxing was fun. It was the first time I was sent to do kickboxing. But I was 17 and I think I thought I was making a real movie, which is odd, since there’s a scene when I’m decapitated and talking … as one does. But, yeah, I saw it and got really sick. I just remember my brother Jamie [Haven] holding me and saying, ‘It’s going to be all right.’”

Hackers: “Well, oddly, love,” said Jolie upon being asked what comes to mind when thinking about Hackers. “That’s where I met Jonny, who is still a great friend. So I think of him when I think of that. Although, I’m sure the movie looks so ancient now, but we had a lot of fun making that.”

Playing Gia Carangi in Gia: “I was so sad for her,” Jolie said, her energy immediately shifting to a somber place. “Playing a real person you identify with and can feel makes you feel a responsibility. Then you live inside her world for a bit and you just feel so deeply sad that she never really knew love and felt she was of value other than a thing or a face. And at that time, with AIDS, I can’t even imagine how she must have felt about how she was treated.”

Girl, Interrupted: “I really, genuinely thought I was the only character who was sane in the entire film. And if you watch it closely, that’s exactly how I was playing it: I am just the only sane person here. I was actually almost upset when people said I was so good at playing insane because I never thought she was insane. She was just incredibly honest, which, I guess, made her seem crazy.”

[From Buzzfeed]

Angelina did play Lisa like she was the only sane one in the place. God, I haven’t seen that movie in such a long time. It’s worth it for Jolie’s performance, which was totally Oscar-worthy. As for Hackers… I actually still feel pangs for Jonny Lee Miller, and he’s my favorite of all of Angelina’s lovers and husbands. JLM was the best. And I love that they’re still friends – Jonny and his wife have come to Angelina’s premieres and before Jonny met his wife, he and Angelina were still hooking up on the regular too. HOT.

PS… We’ll have the premiere pics in a bit! Slow your roll.

    JLM! Hurray!

  2. mkyarwood says:

JLM + Angie Jo is one of my forever fantasies. Also, I watch Elementary. Commence Sherlock fan freak outs.

    • ichsi says:

No freak-outs. Spread the Elementary and JLM love!

    • Lilacflowers says:

Elementary is a fun show. The summer hiatus just started and I can’t wait for the next season to start. Thursday nights are going to be boring without it.

    • Stef Leppard says:

I love Elementary AND Sherlock. JLM and Bendy are both great Sherlocks.

    • original kay says:

love Elementary! The twists this season were great television.

      He is so darn sexy.

    • BW says:

I love both Elementary and Sherlock. Since Bendy and JLM were both in Frankenstein, I wonder if they sat around their dressing room arguing, “My Watson is hotter than your Watson.”

      • Carol says:

I wish I could watch Elementary because I really enjoy JLM, but I cannot stand Lucy Liu. I don’t understand why she still has a career, and I have learned the hard way to skip everything she is in.

  3. daisyfly says:

JLM is one of the men in my harem so I totally get it. It shows a healthy dynamic that AJ and JLM and their significant others get along. That shows maturity.

    • Andrea1 says:

Yes! They are all cool together.

    • Camille (The Original) says:

Agree, definitely shows maturity and class. They made a cute couple and made much more sense than her and BBT ever did.

  4. Samantha25 says:

I wonder why people make a huge deal that Angelina is friends with her exes. It shouldn’t be a surprise since they show up at each other events.

    • LadySlippers says:

I think it’s because everyone just assumes you’ll be enemies post-divorce.

  5. Toot says:

It seems Angelina can keep good relationships with her exes, which is commendable. That top pic is beautiful and I always remember that she was pregnant with Shiloh at the time.

  6. Vic says:

Good for them. He is so adorable.

  7. Frida_K says:

Wow, she looks so fresh-faced in her youthful pictures!

Personally, I think she is much more beautiful now that the newness and baby-face are gone. Her looks express what is inside her, I think–she’s someone who has lived a lot and seen a lot–but either way, younger or older, she’s gorgeous.

I wonder what she’ll look like when she’s eighty? Just as beautiful, I’m sure, but in a different way.

  8. Kiddo says:

I think Gia might have been her best film.

    • Dani2 says:

Me too actually, I’ve loved most of her stuff but Gia has stayed with me for a long time.

      • Kiddo says:

It seemed to be the most raw, genuinely portrayed emotion. Perhaps she became more guarded in her roles after? I mean, she does a good job, but there is a lot of revealing (at least a portion) of one’s self in emoting through characters. I could see how that would make someone feel vulnerable.

    • PunkyMomma says:

I do, too. She was terrific in that movie.

    • blue marie says:

Yeah, I agree. She did a really good job.

    • Nicolette says:

It was the first time I remember hearing of her or seeing anything she was in. Never forgot her afterward (how could I), and thought she was amazing.

    • SpookySpooks says:

Gia and Girl, Interrupted are the only movies where she was really good.

  9. Luca26 says:

Eventhough I think Brad’s a better fit I love Angie and JLM together the old school hotness.

Brittany Murphy is also really good in Girl Interrupted though her character is far from sane.

    • GlimmerBunny says:

Aw, Brittany Murphy was one of my favorite actresses while I was growing up and she was great in “Girl, Interrupted” (so was Angelina). Rest in Peace 🙁

  10. MediaB says:

Heh just suddenly made the connection that Lord Cumby was sitting next to Angie at the oscars and he’s mates with JLM from Frakenstein… I don’t know why this amuses me but it does. There are, like, 0 degrees between anyone in Hollywood it seems!

    • BW says:

I wonder if they sat around their dressing room arguing, “My Watson is hotter than your Watson.”

  11. Miffy says:

She needs to write a book or an article on how to maintain a friendship with an ex, cause, gosh-darnit, much and all as I try I’m just terrible at it. She has two ex-husbands who sing her praise, I would not want to know what any ex had to say about me… :-/

    • ldub says:

      i agree.
it would be a piece on humility, maturity, and the peace that comes from forgiveness.

what am i talking about; its cause shes got the “ill nana”.

      lets be real!

    • Esmom says:

With all due respect, it’s easy for these guys to say they have a great relationship and vice versa…it’s all part of playing nice in Hollywood. Real life can be a lot messier and no one wants to hear that from celebs.

      • Well, to me it seems like they go out of their way. If none of them EVER mentioned their ex (because of a bad break up or whatever), then it wouldn’t even cause any suspicion at all. And it’s not like JLM and BBT are as mainstream famous as AJ and BP……so it’s not like anyone’s beating down their doors to talk about AJ.

I think the fact that they usually say more than the ‘Oh, we’re still good friends’……and actually pose for pictures, go to each other’s premieres, etc…that says a lot to me.

I’m not saying that they call each other every day and gossip, but I think that they’re friendly. They never claimed to be in each other’s lives, fully–but that they’re friendly and they get together when they can.

    • LadySlippers says:

      •Miffy•

Take heart — remember it takes two to be friendly post break-up. I know I can because I’m really good friends with a few of my exes. However, it’s only a few and most of my exes are too immature (and/or abusive) to be able to be friends with me. That’s on them.

Have you thought your exes might not be worth being friends with? There’s all kinds of reasons that might be true.

      • Miffy says:

Very true, LadySlippers. It takes two and sometimes both parties don’t feel like making the effort. I’m not too hung up on it, they wouldn’t feature massively in my life anyway, but it would be nice to be able to ask how someone is doing the few times you might bump into each other.

For the record, I don’t have many exes but the ones I have reveal an unconscious fetish for man children apparently!

  12. A.Key says:

She’d have made a great Irene Adler.

  13. elo says:

I always think of her as being so much thinner than she used to be, but that older picture with JLM confirms what many other posters have mentioned about her arms always having been very thin. Her face has certainly slimmed down with age, but she is so beautiful, then and now.

    • Anners says:

I was noticing the same thing. She has always been lovely, but I think her life experience and humanitarian efforts have made her luminously gorgeous (and I’m not even really much of a fan of hers).

  14. bettyrose says:

She and Brad are an awesome team, maybe the greatest power couple ever who aren’t in the White House- but given the choice I would take JLM a thousands times over BP.

    • Lollipop says:

Was there ever a power couple in the White House? Well, maybe the Clintons, but no other FLOTUS had a real power role.

      • elisa says:

I always think of FDR and Eleanor as a power couple.

      • bettyrose says:

I think the Obamas count given that they were very much a power couple prior to the White House, with equal educations careers, salaries, and respect.

    • Duri says:

      Me too girl me too

    • zut alors! says:

I love JLM and I too think he is the best of all Angie’s former and current partners. I love that he’s never spoken ill of her. There is a sweetness to them that is lacking in her other relationships.

  15. Duri says:

I always loved Johnny and Angelina together. They made such a perfect couple, would still prefer her with Johnny because Brad Pitt does nothing for me in looks or personality.

It’s good to see that they are still friends

  16. Hello Kitty says:

You guys, what if JLM had gotten Angelina to do him a solid and show up as Irene Adler on Elementary?? Especially with the Irene Adler plot development, Angelina would’ve embraced the sh*t out of that role.
All the 90’s girls would’ve exploded from excitement.

  17. Aysla says:

One of my all-time favorite red carpet looks of her. Love the loose lightened hair, the bright red lipstick, the overall sunny makeup and eyeshadow-less eyes. Soooo pretty. Jonny is a gorgeous man.

  18. GIRLFACE says:

She’s still beautiful. I seriously think she can do no wrong. And they were totally hot together. He’s cute!

  19. Miss M says:

    I absolutely love JLM!
Loved them as a couple too.

  20. Abby_J says:

Awwww! My JLM! I adore him very much!

I am friendly with most of my ex’s, so it can be done. I was actually a bridesmaid in one of their weddings, because he married a woman who became a very good friend. Of course, I wasn’t MARRIED to any of them, so that probably adds another level of difficulty.

  21. Molly says:

I hope Brad and Jennifer are allowed such freedom to be friendly. I dont know, I’m a hawk when it comes to my husband ever being friends with his exes because my husband only had ex hook ups, not relationships.

So Brad, I tip my hat to you for being able to stand angie and all her friendly exes. It would drive me crazy.

    • Janet says:

That should give you some idea of how secure Brad is in his relationship with Angie, that he has no problem with her still being on good terms with her exes.

  22. FingerBinger says:

Johnny got married in 2008 and Angelina’s been with Brad since 2005 does that mean they were hooking up while she was with Brad?

    • They were hooking up after she divorced/left Billy Bob. I’ve seen at least one pap video of them in 2003/ early 2004, in LA, (she was out of the country in Nov/December 2004, all the way up to, like February/March 2005), at a tattoo shop late at night….they kissed while they were in there. And then in late 2005, she did this charity telethon thing with him…..

But they didn’t hide it, I don’t think she talked about it in interviews, but she didn’t run when she saw a pap either.

  23. JudyK says:

Whoa, he’s cute…or at least he was back then.

And Angelina once had short hair? Anyway, she rocks it.

BUT…a former husband as a now good friend…nah, don’t like that. It would not work for me if it were reversed.

    • Jazzy says:

Ex husband and I are still friends who hang out sometimes. I know, atypical, but it works. (And we’re both single/no kids).

    • Lucky Charm says:

If you trust your partner, and are secure in your relationship, then I don’t see any reason why not. It would drive me crazy if my husband was so jealous of my being friends with my exes that he wouldn’t allow it. I would have to question why he felt so insecure when there’s no reason not to trust my fidelity to him. My husband and I once went out and a woman started flirting with him while we sat at the bar. He later asked me if I was jealous, and I told him no, why would I be? He was surprised and said he thought I would be because the woman was flirting with him. I told him I trusted him and that since he was going home with me, not her, I really didn’t mind if she flirted with him, because he WAS cute, and proved that I had a hot man, lol!

      • Lauraq says:

Probably because every relationship is different. Just because it works for you doesn’t mean it has to work for everyone else. Your post comes across as very smug, and like you’re implying that any woman who wouldn’t want her husband hanging out with an ex must be insecure.

  24. Cirque28 says:

I prefer Angelina’s old nose. Her face was less porcelain-doll perfect (the way it is now), but more interesting looking.

  25. Helvetica says:

    Great responses.
I love that she is still friends with him and crazy Billy Bob. She seems like the perfect ex-wife to have.

  26. Ginger says:

He is so yummy! I just watched Mansfield Park again last week. He is without a doubt the hottest of Angie’s lovers. They were a scorching couple! I’m not into Brad at all but he and Angie have such great chemistry!

  27. GirlyGIrl says:

    Love.

    Him.

    So.

    Much….
