Cate Blanchett in Chanel at the Sydney Film Festival: frumpy or gorgeous?

While Cate Blanchett’s costars were premiering How To Train Your Dragon 2 in LA yesterday, Cate was in Australia to premiere the film at the Sydney Film Festival. She was the only one there! But it was nice. All you need in this world in La Blanchett. For the life of me, I cannot find the designer ID on this rather matronly dress. Update: It’s Chanel, thanks you guys. I dislike it – the sleeves are weird and that button detail on the skirt is awful. Not even the Duchess of Buttons would not even wear this. What’s going on with Blanchett? Usually she knocks it out of the park. Her face looks beautiful though – and I believe that she hasn’t had anything done. Ever. That’s her real, untouched face.

Cate is very pleased with the film though – this is the first time she’s ever done voice work in an animate film, and she told reporters: “It was an extraordinary process working for three years with the most extraordinary animators … it was very special…And I’m finally in 3D!”

Two more Blanchett-related items. First, she did a lesbian drama with Rooney Mara called Carol, and the first production still was just released – go here to see. Period Blanchett! She always looks amazing in period clothing. Also, she covers the new issue of Madame Figaro. I’m including that image in this post.

I don’t hate the dress. Well, that’s not true. I don’t hate the look. The dress is fug and would look pretty budget on anyone else, but Cate can wear anything and make me a believer.

  2. Abbott says:

At first glance, I thought those were photos of Chelsea Handler.

  3. Dawn says:

She has the best skin! I think the outfit is a little on the frump side.

Yes to the face-always yes to the face. But NO to the dress. The Houses of Dior and Chanel have fallen like the House of the Ushers (not Usher as in Biebs’n’Usher, but Madeleine &company). I think Lagerfeld has been inhaling Choupette’s litter box contents or something. Throw that rag in the trash, Cate.

  4. Chris says:

Untouchably great in herself but lawks, not this rigout! I personally like her paddling in Lake Swinton for style….a bit of edge and wit but stll glam. Radiant though, such skin!

  5. Jaderu says:

See?! Me and my pajamas were right. Everyone in Hollywood has no idea how to dress anymore!
The top of this dress looks like something the craft bead aisle at Michaels puked up.
Oh Cate. I still love you though.

LOL! Yup, me and my yoga pants feel vindicated too 🙂

  6. Hannah says:

It’s Chanel. And pretty awful, imho.

  7. Marlene says:

    Face: Gorgeous
    Dress: frumpy

+1. Usually she can overcome bad dresses and still look amazing, but this one is pretty bad.

  8. RobN says:

Out of the Sound of Music collection.

  9. Hannah says:

I don’t believe she hasn’t had some work done. But then again, I think Kate Winslet is natural and this blog stauchly believes she has a face full of Botox, so who’s to say 😉

    • don't kill me i'm french says:

Her dermatologist must be as good as Julianne Moore ‘s one or Sharon Stone’s one

i think the waist up is fine, maybe it just needs a different skirt, something more streamlined.

    the skirt just drowns her.

thank goodness for her posture. that saves her from a complete frump out.

  11. Angee says:

Probably another outfit that looks better in person than it photographs. Anyway, I love this woman – she’s usually got some kind of interesting outfit on!

  12. raindrop says:

Remove the sleeves or alter them (into fitted cap sleeves or 3/4 sleeves) and do something about those buttons, and this dress would be rather cute.

  13. Kelly says:

I thought it was Chelsea Handler when I first saw the picture.

  14. SnarkGirl says:

Luminous as always, but the dress is a miss. I love that she takes chances with fashion though.

  15. nina says:

Is that film Carol based on the novel by Patricia Highsmith? Must be! That is exciting

    • Pinky Rose says:

Yup, it is an adaptation of the Price of Salt. It is a truly amazing book and I’m sure Todd Haynes will adapted it to perfection. Can’t wait (even if Gloomy Mara is Therese, she fits the part of the aloof girl).

  16. Pinky Rose says:

She really is so beautiful. I always love her fashion game (that emerald green dress she wore to Cannes and she is wearing on that Madame Figaro cover is one of my faves looks of the year) and how she wears said garment in such regal way, but this is boring and not really her style. This is forgettable and fug, maybe because it was just an informal screening she decided to go the simple route (as much as you can in Chanel, of course lol).

  17. joan says:

Even she can fail. “Hated it!” [remember In Living Color?]

  18. Snowpea says:

Her face looks tight and botoxy. But meh. She’s a bloody great Aussie gal. Love Cate!

  19. Patty Cake says:

While I like Kate a lot, I don’t think she is one of those people that can wear anything. Hate the dress . Too 1980’s valley girl for me.
