Miranda Kerr: ‘Privacy is the most important thing, especially being a mother’

Miranda Kerr

Miranda Kerr covers the July issue of Net-A-Porter’s The Edit as “a woman with drive.” That’s very accurate. No one can accuse Miranda of not having hustle. She’s turned herself into a brand and works hard at setting up side projects like her latest, a collaboration with Swarovski. She’ll probably be designing jewelry, right? Or maybe thongs. I can’t even deal with wearing a regular thong. The thought of a Swarovski thong is something I probably shouldn’t have mentioned.

This interview with the Edit is mostly uneventful. There is one part where she starts to complain about the paparazzi. Miranda poses so hard for the paps, but she does have a point here when it comes to her son:

Miranda’s personal style: “I like what Stella McCartney stands for and she’s good at what she does. Alexander Wang, too — I’m a very tactile person so I like fabrics that feel good. Especially now, with my son; I like it when [fabrics] are soft so I can cuddle up to him and they don’t get creased.”

Her healthy eating: “I grew up learning the benefits first-hand from my grandmother. She had a vegetable patch at the back of her house and she would teach me how to cook — all very simple but wholesome. Learning the benefits of eating organic food and the nutrient value was ingrained into me, then it was something that I wanted to learn more about because for my job I need to feel my best so that I can give my best.”

On happiness: “We all have bad days and negative emotions. But I’ve realized it’s important to sit with it and let it pass, and if it doesn’t pass, choose a thought that will help it pass. Focus on what it is that you’re grateful for. Having perspective is key.I feel happiest when I’m with my son at the beach or the park, and we get to enjoy ourselves without paparazzi. Privacy is the most important thing, especially being a mother; when I have an off-duty day, it’s challenging if there are photographers around. It becomes a circus and I don’t want that for Flynn. If I’m on my way to work and they get a photo, it’s fine. But if somebody wants to have a day off … Can you imagine being a builder and having to build on your day off? I get my photo taken for a living, and when I have a day off, they’re still taking photos. I have perspective about it, but it’s just nice to have little moments when they don’t intrude.”

[From Net-A-Porter The Edit]

Miranda seems very concerned about Flynn’s privacy. She can’t help it that Flynn gets papped when he’s out with her (or with Orlando). No judgment there at all. Here’s where things get a little odd — Miranda also covers the July issue of Vogue Australia. Guess who appears alongside her in the shoot? Flynn. He’s as adorable as can be, and he seems to be a little ham. Editor Edwina McCann spoke to E! Online and said Flynn had a blast, and that it was Miranda’s idea for him to appear in the shoot. Is that inconsistent with Miranda’s desire to shield Flynn from the circus of fame?

Miranda “I’m in Daily Fail every day flaunting my endless pins” Kerr is saying privacy is important.
    Right then.

    • Brin says:

      Oh the irony.

    • Francesca says:

I swear I only clicked on this story to feel annoyed. Ever since someone described her as looking like a pumpkin head with a witch’s nose, it is all I can see.

  2. Hannah says:

It’s not inconsistent. Those photos were taken in a completely different environment than paparazzi pictures. I do however raise my eyebrow ever so slightly regarding her claims about wanting privacy.

    • Amy Tennant says:

I agree. this was an environment where she had control. It wasn’t someone rushing up to them in public with a camera. That can be so scary for kids– and parents!

    • Stef Leppard says:

I agree. Posing for a photo shoot is not the same as being swarmed by men with cameras who are shouting at you.

      • Detritus says:

Maybe, maaaaybe, she’s trying to acclimate him to a life where he will be in the spotlight all the time…… Ahahahahaha nope

    • Liv says:

I don’t agree. You either want to keep your children out of the spotlight or you want them in. She obviously wants him in. If you tease people with little ads of your child or talk in interviews about them all the time then you just have to live with the fact that your child is in the spotlight too. Lainey accurately pointed out that Kerry Washington for example doesn’t talk about her baby and we all know nothing about it.

      • Hannah says:

She doesn’t say though that she wants to keep her son out of it all. She says (as I understood it) she doesn’t want the “circus”, the chaos that comes with a lot of photographers yelling your name, following you etc. to affect her child.
If I were famous and a mother, I’d take Kerry Washington’s route as well. But: different strokes for different folks.

      • Liv says:

Exactly, but then she shouldn’t pretend that she doesn’t want the attention or wants privacy for her child.

  3. eva says:

    Is she wearing pop socks?

  4. Linn says:

Oh please, people much more famous than her manage to keep their children’s privacy, but poor Miranda get’s followed around all the time?

She is possibly on top of the list of Stars who call the paparazzi no matter if she’s with her son or not.

  5. Kate says:

I don’t know. Taking a few pictures in a studio is a totally different thing to having 30 paps screaming and jostling and just generally behaving like douchebags around your young child. And the photoshoot doesn’t really put him front and center, not like some photoshoots I’ve seen with celebs and their kids where the goal is obviously to make their kid a little celebrity. Personally I’m a big fan of celebs who never even go there and keep everything strictly work-related, I think celebs kids deserve privacy, but this doesn’t bother me too much. It’s a little contradictory but Miranda isn’t really launching an all out attack against the paps here, just saying she doesn’t want it around her kid 24/7.

I do always appreciate the way she speaks about paparrazi. She’ll talk about how it’s sometimes annoying but she manages to be gracious about it and acknowledges her role in it all. A lot of celebrities would benefit from memorizing a few of her answers.

    • Lou says:

If she doesn’t want the paps around her son then she shouldn’t call them when she’s about to leave with her son!

  6. jane says:

Brange keeps their kids private. Kennedys did. Most models don’t know what they’re saying.

    • Wilma says:

There is a difference between paparazzi and studio shots.
I have seen a lot of pap pics of the Brange kids.

      • Lisen says:

Does Brangelina’s kids go to school? I think they are home schooled and that is why we don’t see that many pap pics of them. They mostly stay at home in a gated property.

      • Tswise says:

The Brangelina kids go long stretches without being papped, though. You might have seen a lot of pap photos of them, but they are by and large taken in a very short period of time. Then months will go by while their parents are staying in one place and we don’t see them.

I would say a good example of pap photos being rare are Matt Damon’s kids. Now THOSE pics are rare, and those kids go to actual school everyday.

  7. poppy says:

    privacy
    🙄

  8. Lucy2 says:

There is a difference between paparazzi and studio shots, but at the same time, she’s putting him out there which seems a bit counterproductive to privacy.

  9. Eileen says:

Talking out of both sides of your mouth Miranda?

  10. DanaG says:

If she stopped calling the paps then Flynn wouldn’t be papped. There are plenty of celebs kids far more famous then Miranda who manage it without a problem. Putting Flynn on a cover is hardly guarding his privacy. There was no need for it she chose to do it and why? For the extra attention.

  11. Kiara says:

she milks “as a mother…” so much, many more have managed to do a wonderful job without a peep

    • Abbott says:

Kiara, totally right. She hits the same three talking points in every interview: Being a mother, talking about her kid (though she wants privacy for him), and name checking her grandmother, who she iced out for nearly a year.

  12. Chris says:

Celebs know how to avoid paps when they want to. As an aside she looks a bit like Ange on that Vogue cover.

    • Wes says:

Even serious and private actors like Daniel Day Lewis are sometimes papped. Do you think he calls them?

      • Linn says:

Every famous person is papped once in a while, but Miranda Kerr is papped nearly on a daily Basis and Flynn with her. If she wanted to be more private she could easily do so.

Daniel Day Lewis has three children and there are maybe a handful of pictures of them.

  13. aenflex says:

Yeah, she’s so private. Always blabbing discreetly about herself, posting on Instagram like no tomorrow. She’s the epitome of playing things close to the vest.

    • Trishizle says:

And talking about herself masturbating to the press but then complaining about privacy. I dont get it.

  14. stellalovejoydiver says:

Then she should stop calling them. She is a hypocrite.

  15. Chicagogurl says:

Straddling a bike backwards gets you no closer to anything let alone sexy.

    • kri says:

@Chicagogurl-dash it-you just gave me flashbacks of Kim And Kanye!!! Oh, my eyes/brain!!

  16. Diana says:

Oh, please. How do the paps even know where she is the half the time? Pretty sure she calls them, as most celebs do, so she gets a massive eye roll from me.

  17. Abbott says:

She’s the one calling the paps. Just remember that.

  18. eliza says:

The paparazzi are interested in Kerr? Lol. Mmmmmkay then. I did not know that.

  19. amber5ash says:

    Annoying. And boring.

  20. Littlewood says:

Haha, oh wow talk about delusional. This is the same woman who is photographed getting out of cars walking a couple of meters, pose, turn around and walking back, pose, getting back in the car and driving off. And the paparazzi just happened to be around to photograph it all…. There are pictures of her PA standing between the paparazzi holding her luggage while she parades in front of them. There are pictures of her picking Flynn up, turning him towards the cameras stops and poses with him before walking on. She used him for covers and photoshoots and still talks about wanting privacy?
Then close your twitter and instagram, stop talking about him, stop using him for photoshoots and stop calling the paparazzi you silly, narcissistic woman! Even Kimye manages to provide better privacy for their child.

  21. roxy750 says:

    Oh puke

  22. Dotty says:

Gawd, the combover look is never good. On anybody.

  23. meh says:

I don’t know if it’s make up or photoshop or what but she looks ridiculously good on that cover. I’ve never found her overly attractive, more “cute”…but wow.

  24. Boromir's Bytch says:

Miranda and Amber Heard should totally become besties. They’re both so full of crap the way they go on and on about privacy and fame. And now motherhood. Maybe Miranda can give Amber some pointers on how to extend her 15 minutes by exploiting her soon to be step children. Nobody can use a kid like a prop for photo ops like Miranda can.

  25. balticprincess says:

Staged or not: if you want privacy, don’t post so many photos on Instagram, of you/child/nursing your child/flaunting pins/being with or without makeup. It is laughable, there are lots of persons and kids who are not in the tabloids every day. Next thing is Hilaria Baldwin wanting privacy,,,

  26. Claire says:

God she is such an idiot!!!!!

  27. DrFunkenstein says:

This is too absurd to even acknowledge. But I did guffaw loudly.
