Somebody gave Benedict Cumberbatch a bullhorn in Boston, life is complete

FFN_Cumberbatch_EXCL_RM_063014_51465943

Benedict Cumberbatch & the Bullhorn. OH YES. Why has this fantasy never been realized before now? Imagine that voice… over a bullhorn. The good news is that Benedict was photographed yesterday in Boston filming more scenes as Billy Bulger in the Whitey Bulger film, formerly known as Black Mass. The good news is that Benedict is still rocking his ‘80s styling. The good news is that someone (a friggin’ genius) gave him a bullhorn.

The bad news? He’s yelling bad stuff into the bullhorn. He was protesting desegregation and busing in Boston’s school system. Which is historically accurate – Bill Bulger was a vocal critic of busing and school desegregation. Also: Billy Bulger was forced out of the Massachusetts Senate by Mitt Romney!!

So, let’s play a game. Let’s imagine all of the wonderful things Benedict should have/could have been shouting into the bullhorn…

“Every woman in Boston must take off her panties and prepare for The Batching.”

“Don’t yell at me, I know my accent sucks!”

“I want an Oscar for The Imitation Game!”

“Benedict Cumberbatch for Governor of Massachusetts!”

“Slap it up, flip it, rub it down!”

“Honk if you think I should have been People Magazine’s Sexiest Bachelor!”

  1. GeeMoney says:

He looks all kinds of 70’s/80’s-riffic in that outfit.

    Love him!

    • Tippett says:

Look at this hot bitch with his squinty eyes. Would hit it every way in every day . UNF. Don’t even care.

  2. Lilacflowers says:

This Boston girl is keeping her panties on but all the Batch lovers can have more of him. Historically: Bulger left the Massachusetts Senate years before Romney showed up. Governor Weld, a Republican, appointed him to run UMASS. Romney forced him out of UMASS and into retirement because he testified to Congress that he failed to report a phone call from Whitey to the FBI.

    • Secret Squirrel says:

Giving you a hug *hugs Lilacflowers until she turns purple and nearly faints* as I haven’t been around much lately and seems a lot of the “Sean in the boot” gang are missing too.

I think you and Ben would make great friends. You just need to march yourself down to the set and tell him so. Insist on taking him to the “really good” places to eat and try throwing a few napkins over his face when he least expects it for amusement purposes. Also ensure you are photographed 5 paces behind him guaranteeing you are then seen as being his secret girlfriend. In the meantime I’ll go start a nasty blog on Tumblr…

      • Make mine a double says:

I’m here tonight and I’m kind of liking that 80s thing. Been so busy at work tho, not really had a huge amount of time to play. On Friday I take 120 kids on an outing, god help me.

So hello ladies. *waves and passes over cocktails*

      • Janeite says:

        Hi Squirrel!
I was missing you yesterday at the thread on Benny eating his very first cannoli! We were trying to think of ways to combine his name with the word cannoli. Jammypants came up with Cumbernoli.

      • Secret Squirrel says:

Hi Janeite. I’ve been busy and also nursing a broken heart 🙁 Have a bit of a “all men are b@st@rds” mentality at the moment. I need a tango, a hobnob and a sock monkey (preferably with TH attached, dancing his little heart out for me) to make me feel better…

I completely missed that post about the cannoli! Kaiser waits until I am asleep before she posts the good threads!! I would totally eat a Cumbernoli!

      • Lilacflowers says:

@SecretSquirrel, sending hugs and hobnobs your way with a band of musicians playing the tango.

      • Janeite says:

Oh gosh, sorry to hear that Squirrel! You are too good for him anyway, dammit! No one hurts our Squirrel and gets away with it! Yeah, just think about a nice HiddlesBatch tango (bickering over who leads) while you eat your Hobnobs.

The Cumbernoli thread was the most recent one before this one. The comments are great so take a look. They may cheer you up. And make you hungry!

    • Evie says:

@Lilacflowers: Billy Bulger certainly made his mark on the Boston political scene for several decades before he decided to take the Fifth Amendment and not cooperate with the FBI in the hunt for his brother Whitey. There’s a great New York Times article from last December that discusses how Whitey paid the price for putting fraternal loyalty above principle and suffering the consequences. But as one person noted, the price he paid is not nearly as steep as Whitey’s murder victims. Here’s the link: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/25/us/sticking-by-a-murderous-brother-and-paying-for-it-dearly.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0

Cumberbatch certainly has a meaty role to play. It says a lot about his industry stature these days that they chose him over 1) an Irish-American or 2) an Irish actor. Can’t wait to see this picture.

    • Secret Squirrel says:

Gosh Tara. Do you have to be so vocal?? Or did the sight of the Cumbercrotch leave you speechless??
      🙂

    • sonalaceae (Nighty) says:

      Oh my God.. lol
@Secret sweety… I just love you and your coments..
      Thanks for the laugh…

  3. Secret Squirrel says:

I can hear the awesome from over here. He doesn’t need a bullhorn!!

Hope he busted out a few Sinatra tunes between takes with that bullhorn.
    “Start spreading the news
    Ben’s single today
I want to be a part of it
    Batchlove Batchlooooooove”

    • Janeite says:

He could start reading the dictionary if he did it through a bullhorn and I’d probably still listen! 🙂

    • LadySlippers says:

      •Squirrel•

You sure he’s not trying to coax people back to our Playground of Fun?!??? 😜

      • Secret Squirrel says:

        *Hugs to LadyS*

I’ll ask him next time I am nesting in his pocket! I am not allowed near his costumes as I apparently ruin the polyester lining of the suits. Not to mention a squirrel in his pocket can sometimes look like something else, especially when I let my tail run down his leg!

    • Lilacflowers says:

Billy likes to sing “Take me out to the ballgame” but I doubt Cumberbatch knows that one.

  4. PunkyMomma says:

“Cumberbitches with cannoli, to the right! Cumberbitches with exploding clams, to the left!”

    • Secret Squirrel says:

What if I have exploding cannoli??

      • PunkyMomma says:

@SecretSquirrel – a ricotta bomb? Lucky you’re wearing a trench coat. I can only guess Benny would want your exploding cannoli front and center . . .

    • kri says:

We are ALL to the left, to the left, every single clam in the world to the left. Can someone please whip up a Cumber Canoli and share the recipe?

  5. Sixer says:

SIXER! IT’S BEEN AGES SINCE YOU LEFT A COMMENT ON ONE OF MY POSTS. WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO TO ENTICE YOU BACK? BOUNCE? AGAIN? YOU CAN HAVE TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING, YOU KNOW.

Thanks, Ben. And I wasn’t even playing hard to get. I’m too busy perving over Novak Djokovic’s glorious backside to be thinking of you.

    • Secret Squirrel says:

Novak has the best legs in the game (women included!). And he’s funny to boot, so I adore him!

      Ben, you got competition!!

      • Sixer says:

I love him. However, come the Wimbledon semi-final, and assuming both are through, I shall be supporting Andy Murray (who is British funny so everyone thinks he isn’t funny at all). With the best will in the world, though, Murray isn’t fanciable.

      • Secret Squirrel says:

Agree with pretty much everything you said here! However I am going for my Aussie boy today (against Nadal, a big ask!) and still have a soft spot for Federer (partly because Stefan Edberg is his coach and is as hot today as he was when he was playing and melting my heart).

But oh Novak! You are the best!!
        http://www.hcfoo.com/2009/04/novak-djokovic-impresses-girl-and-head.html

      • Sixer says:

I’m watching the first set tie-break now! Set point! World Cup, Schmworld Cup. I’ve banished the Sixlets to the lesser tellyroom.

      • icerose says:

        what a great game-so close

      • Sixer says:

I’ve just done a little dance around the living room! I loved that. He just has NO fear. Ooh. New favourite!

      • Secret Squirrel says:

        YAY for my Aussie boy!!

Nadal can suck eggs!! World nbr 2 taken out by wildcard! Awesome in every way!

    • Janeite says:

Sixer!!! Where the hell have you been??? And where is T.fanty???

      • Sixer says:

Hi! The conversations aren’t so funny these days, Janeite, so less interesting to me. Same for the Hiddles threads. Not really my bag any more. No shade: just a matter of taste/enjoyability.

      • Janeite says:

Ah, I see. No worries, at least you’re still alive and well! Enjoy Wimbledon!

      • Miss Jupitero says:

My old favorites have stopped being fun. I think sometimes you just have to give things a rest and do something else.

        Sixer, I miss you. 🙂

      • Sixer says:

I am still about! Just not to cast shade at British actors with devoted American followings! Currently, I’m talking to Eve about football on the Suarez thread and you can usually find me spouting republican snark on anything to do with the British royal family.

Miss J – I could come to your garden while you sketch? I’ll do poetry readings. We could go resolutely UNposh, with some John Clare?

      • LadySlippers says:

        •Sixer•

        Agreed.

Other posts are less fun too. I thinks it’s because Thornfield Manor and Thornfield Gardens have been shut up for summer.

(Although the gardener stays on to deal with naughty weeds…)

        *sigh*

      • sonalaceae (Nighty) says:

Yep, it’s been a liitle bit dull lately… maybe too many posts??? I actually started liking BC and TH because of CB but now, it’s weird.. can’t explain it…

*LadySlippers, need some help?? I’ve been kinda bored, so… anything seems interesting, including naughty weeds…*

*Miss J, maybe we could sketch together??? *

      • icerose says:

@Sixer I like your republican snark on the royal family threads-raises a glass

      • Miss Jupitero says:

Ah I have a terribly soft spot for Sandro. He’s so sweet. And John Clare as well– he’s one of my favorites! Let’s do this, Sixer!

    • Lilacflowers says:

      Oh, Novak! Yumm!

  6. churasco says:

So many Batch posts!!! I’m usually a lurker in Cumby’s but damn Kaiser is spoiling me!!

Btw where have u been, Squirrel? I missed your comments!!

    • Katie says:

Maybe Kaiser’s getting it in now, lol. Hamlet alone will have him fall off the map for like 4 months next year and Richard, likely a closed-off set, starts filming in September.

A little OT but Frankenstein is going to be making the rounds again for those who haven’t seen it. Note NTL is still adding dates, last time they didn’t add the theater near me until October:

      http://ntlive.nationaltheatre.org.uk/productions/16546-frankenstein

      • Sighs says:

My closest theater is 700 miles away. Guess I’ll take a pass on that one.

      • Missa410 says:

IT’S PLAYING HALF A MILE FROM ME!!!! They’re showing both versions- does anyone have a suggestion as to which I should see? The Batch as the creature or as the doctor?

      • icerose says:

@Missa410 I watched both back to back just for comparison of both actors in both roles. I guess if you are going for BC seeing him plyt the monster is more dramatic. Several people have said to me that his Frankiestin is a bit reminiscent of Sherlock whilst the monster is something completely different. If nudity is your thing go for the monster.

      • Missa says:

Funny you should say that, @icerose. I ended up deciding to just see both, since they’re showing the JLM-as-creature at 2:00, and Cumbystein at 7:00. A glorious, Batch-filled day it will be! 🙂

    • Secret Squirrel says:

      Hi Churasco!

I’ve been around, watching the comments from others and thinking about butting in where I wasn’t needed! However tonight (for me) I am watching Wimbledon so catching up on my cumby love at the same time!

I’m going to be neither pretty nor pleasant at work tomorrow given I will be operating on about 3 hours sleep in the last 30 hrs…

  7. Lolo-ology says:

He’s singing Sexual Healing in perfect acapella.

  8. birdie says:

This whole look turns me on for some reason.

  9. Green Eyes says:

I am totally digging the “huskier” Batch. I know it’s probably all prosthetics but I do like him with a little more girth than he normally carries. Or maybe it’s the cannolis doing their magical work???

  10. Katie says:

Really pleasantly surprised by the way everything–costumes, sets, makeup–looks so far. They’ve got to be sweating to death in all that 70’s polyester though, ugh.

  11. Hello Kitty says:

80’s styled Cumby is not doing it for me. I await filming to complete so he can go back to his chambray shirts, jorts, and Kangol hats.

    • Katie says:

Don’t forget the purple pants! 😀

    • Faye says:

Tell me about it. Between the hair and the outfit I’m getting flashbacks to my dad’s “casual office daywear” from the 80 ‘s, and that just ain’t sexy.

    • Hello Kitty says:

@Katie: yes, the purple pants are a must! I miss those!

@Faye: did your dad also wear short sleeved dress shirts during the summer? Even as a child I knew something was wrong with that look.

      • Faye says:

@Hello Kitty – Yup! His suits were actually nice (because they were picked out by my mom), but he couldn’t be moved from those short-sleeved shirts in the summer. God bless him :). I think he actually looks better now – the patina lent men by age and the fact that he just lets my mom and me do all of his styling now.

    • LadySlippers says:

      •Hello Kitty•

This has nothing to do with how Benny looks dearie. I’ll bet it’s because you’re the woman that was in the *other* guy’s arms that caused such a furor. Just admit it now!

  12. Lindy79 says:

*sits and waits for people to start photoshopping random items and sexual organs into his hands and/or mouth*

  13. Dani says:

I love Dennis Quaid but can’t get past the Dennis Quaid vibes I’m getting from Cumby.

  14. bookwormfoodie says:

    “Mrs. Hudson!! Oh wait…”

I’m really digging this look for some weird reason, especially with the bullhorn.

  15. MissMary says:

NGL, I’m kind of wishing he’d take sideburns on board year ’round.

  16. ncboudicca says:

I wonder if they’re making The Midget’s part bigger because Cumberbatch is in the role? I read the book years ago when it first came out but can’t remember Bill being 50% of the story. I’m so looking forward to this movie. Will Benny and Johnny do press together? Cumberbatch in a stiff suit and Depp in purple sunglasses, scarves, and puffy face? God I used to love him, WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU JOHNNY???

    • Green Girl says:

I was wondering about this, too, ncboudicca. Some articles on the film make it sound like he’s getting pretty high billing (and should have significant screen time), while other articles make it sound like he’s only in a handful of scenes. Does anyone know for sure?

    • Old Enough says:

I think it’s just that they are fitting his few scenes into 2 weeks so we hear all about him. Johnny has been filming since mid May and I think the shoot runs until the end of July?

      • Green Earrings says:

Has there been any news confirming that he will only filming in Boston for two weeks? He has been featured briefly in films before, August: Osage County and Twelve Years a Slave, as examples, yet he was on those sets much longer. I’m curious as to why people think he will only be shooting for a couple of weeks, unless it has been officially confirmed somewhere that I’m not aware of.

I have seen this mentioned here and other places before. Does anyone know for sure?

      • From North of Boston says:

        That sounds about right.

Though I admit they’ve filmed more scenes with him already than I thought there would be in the film. Though maybe some of them won’t make it to the final film.

I wonder if he’ll be in town for the 4th? If the weather holds there will be fireworks, and the Pops concert on the Esplanade
        http://www.july4th.org/Celebrate_on_the_Esplanade

      • Green Earrings says:

        @From North of Boston

I guess we will see soon enough.

I remember many years of Pops Goes the Fourth festivities with family and friends while growing up. There really is nothing else like it anywhere. I get nostalgic for it every year. Hope you get to enjoy some of it if you have an opportunity. 🙂

      • Lilacflowers says:

@FromNorthofBoston, “if the weather holds” seems to be a very big “if” at the moment. I always like the morning festivities: the Declaration of Independence at the Old State House and the Constitution turnaround with the firing at Castle Island, but don’t know what will happen if that storm hits hard. The mayor is going to announce tomorrow whether or not they will move the Pops (with the Beach Boys) & Fireworks to Thursday to beat the storm, since they do a full rehearsal any way.

  17. Ellen says:

Is it just me or does he look mighty fine in that suit?

  18. Intro Outro says:

I’ve been biting my tongue hard for the last few Cumbilloni posts (because Cumby is definitely much more in cannelloni than cannoli vein for me lol), but Kaiser keeps asking, so: no, I find his 80’s look distinctly unsexy. I generally quite fervently dislike 80’s fashion which imo produced some of the least sexy styles ever (80’s shoulder pads anyone?) Add to this his cheek fillers and it’s all a HUGE NO 😀

    • Janeite says:

I dunno, but I think it’s kind of growing on me the more I see of it.

    • icerose says:

@Intro Outro I always bite my tongue on Benny posts. i much prefer his Sherlock look and his best pictures are the older ones when he was much younger but that is probably true of all of us.

    • sonalaceae (Nighty) says:

I also prefer his cheeckbones… so much better… his catlike, his alienlike , much better… 😛

    • jammypants says:

Benny is aging backwards. Benjamin Buttonbatch.

  19. Patris says:

    Sherlockology @Sherlockology
Just spoken to @Suevertue regarding #MartinFreeman’s comments on a #Sherlock 2015 Xmas special – and OFFICIAL news will be coming very soon

  20. Kiddo says:

“NOW HEAR THIS, NOW HEAR THIS, Kaiser, STEP AWAY FROM THE CANNOLI. I REPEAT, STEP AWAY FROM MY CANNOLI. Hands off”.

    • Green Girl says:

LOL. I keep hoping he serenades the crowd in between takes: “Oh, you want to hear me sing my renditions of pop hits with my baritone voice, I know you do.”

  21. Patris says:

Ben today on the set of the Black Mass

    • Sunflower the grammar nanny says:

      Mmmm….waistcoat

    • Lilacflowers says:

That’s the Church of the Covenant on Newbury Street. Once again, he has returned to the Back Bay. (Nancy Kerrigan was married in that church.) The church’s sanctuary was closed today and will be closed tomorrow too, so they may be back there. Yes, I saw him today. My co-worker called and said she needed opinions on churches for her wedding and could a group of us come meet her. We arrived to find her drooling over Depp and BC was standing across the street, looking very hot and uncomfortable.

      • 'P'enny says:

@lilacflowers, through you, it’s like I am two degrees of separation from Benny, and that makes three from Jonny Depp and… 😀

    • From North of Boston says:

Oh it was so hot and humid today…that polyester suit must have been stifling.

Cool you got to see them!

  22. Kazlock 1307 says:

Newbie here.Hi.I have to tell you how much I enjoy reading some of your posts .You are all very witty.
