Duchess Kate & Prince William get animated at the Wimbledon Men’s Final

Here are some photos of Duchess Kate and Prince William at yesterday’s Wimbledon Men’s Final, between Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic. Spoiler? Federer put up a great fight but he lost. Here’s another spoiler: during the last twenty minutes, I was so nervous for Roger that I started binge-eating cookies. I doubt Kate ever feels the need to binge-eat anything out of nervousness.

According to the Daily Mail, Kate repeated a “Jonathan Saunders dress which she wore during the couple’s trip to the Solomon Islands in 2012.” I have no memory of this dress, so I’ll take their word for it. She looks okay, but I still don’t understand how she can sit there in the sun (it was so bright that she needed sunglasses in the royal box again) and NOT put her hair into a ponytail. I have long hair as well – put me out in the sun for any longer than five minutes and I need to pull my hair off my neck.

The rest of Kate’s family also made it to Wimbledon, but strangely enough, they were not invited to sit in the Royal Box. Pippa, Carole, Michael and Pippa’s boyfriend Nico Jackson were in a completely separate area. I wonder… it feels like the royal family is really trying to put an end to Kate relying too heavily on her folks these days. Maybe there were also some concerns that Will was starting to be referred to as “Bill Middleton”?

The only time Kate ever really looks passionate and excited is at sporting events.
I don’t know how I feel about BRF trying to separate Kate’s family from her. On one hand, they ARE her family and obviously important. But maybe it’s because that they sometimes try to use their royal connections, rather than actual hard work or talent, to get work/gigs is what is really bothersome.

    • Audrey says:

She really does. She was so athletic before the engagement.

She should do more charity events with kids and sports. She obviously enjoys sports and being active.

She and Will are looking happier

      • notasugarhere says:

They’re looking happier because they’re not working.

      • Savanna says:

Remember the field hockey event where she kept on her heels and McQueen coat? Ugh.

But you guys are right, that would be a GREAT angle for her. Sports, but hopefully not treading into the “health and eating well” category. She can do whatever she wants with her own body, but it would bother me to see someone who constantly diets and is VERY slim as an “official” advocate for healthy eating.

Maybe they’re afraid of a Michelle Obama comparison.

      • AM says:

        Savanna,
I always wondered if she stayed away from doing something with military wives/families because that’s another Michelle Obama signature. That being said, it doesn’t appear they were doing much mingling with military families in Wales.

      • Dame Snarkweek says:

She wrote the foreward to a book about the lives/roles of RAF wives.

      • notasugarhere says:

More like, Rebecca Deacon wrote the foreward. KM chose not to mingle with the other RAF wives, so I doubt she wrote that herself.

      • bluhare says:

That’s the least she could have done for the RAF wives, since she refused to mingle with them on Anglesey.

      • Dame Snarkweek says:

That’s one of the few areas in which I will give Kate a complete pass. Because she was dating a prince everything she did with the wives would have been over interpreted. Kate goes shopping/lunching with the wives…well, look, little Miss princess deigns to mingle with common folk. Kate doesn’t mingle with the wives…who does she think she is? I think she would have found at least one friend she could have formed a lasting bond with but oh well. Kate has never been the type to have a coterie and why should have changed for the RAF wives? Not all but nearly all ladies’ auxilliaries et al are fraught with politics, jealousies, rivalries, pettiness and fickle alliances. I don’t blame Kate for hanging out with Pippa, Carole and Lupo. Besides, after a semi respectable amount of time the wives would have been knocking one another over to sell their recollections.

      • notasugarhere says:

During the four visits she made to Malta during his deployment, HM mingled with the wives and had no problems. Haven’t spent much time around the military have you? If Middleton had been one of them, they would not have betrayed her. Fact is, she spent most of the time in London.

      • bluhare says:

Snarkweek, it was not while they were dating. While they were engaged, it was announced that she would join the Officers Wives Club after they got married, because, well they’re just like us and want to live a normal life. I remember it clearly, as I thought it was wonderful she was marrying William and I was pretty impressed she was going to actually try to live the life of an officer’s wife. And they extended an invitation to her and she declined. Military people are a tight knit group and I imagine more than a few would be quite insulted to read your post insinuating they’d only associate with her for money.

So the point is, it was actually announced officially. And she didn’t follow through. And now has the gall to talk about her life as a military wife in a book written by the wives she declined to join. It’s no wonder she didn’t contribute a chapter. There was barely enough for a foreword.

    • FLORC says:

Came here to saw the same thing. Sporting events are her strengths. From spectating to playing she comes off genuine. The difference is drastic!

    • Jocelyn says:

I agree with everything you said.

      • Dena says:

And because she seems to enjoy sports so much . . . her doing charitable work around sports/girls in sports and fitness/exercise . . . it wouldn’t even seem like work!!! Dang. That’s it. There you go. Just wrap some good stuff around the veges and she might just eat em! Or do a little work in this case.

See, it’s all about packaging. Smile.

      • notasugarhere says:

The problem I see with this idea is that she’s a stone underweight – deliberately. If she was still her healthy weight from pre-2007 breakup maybe, but not now. Encouraging tweens and teens to look up to her as a “healthy” role model is a dangerous idea.

      • jenna says:

notasugarhere – agree with the sentiment of your comment, but I would go even further and say she’s more than a stone underweight!! Remember, she was never heavy or remotely overweight, in fact she was rather slim – but athletic, with muscle – prior to the drastic change. I can remember shots of her in a bikini that would make most people envious and again, this was BEFORE she lost a ton of weight.

Seriously folks, if you are looking for an athletic role model, pick someone who is healthy looking and doesn’t have bones protruding all over the place – clavicle, shoulder blades, prominent collar bones. A padded bra and layers of clothing (like the green coat in July!) can only hide so much.

      • Dena says:

@notasugarhere . . . Yeah. You are correct but maybe, just maybe, she’d pick up the weight and go back to a healthier weight if she had a viable/passionate vehicle to express herself. Perhaps she wouldn’t turn the anxiety/depression or whatever is plaguing her inward and onto herself.

Should we contact her offices to suggest this? Seriously. I say this because I am just tired of writing about her pathetic *ss. And when I call her pathetic, I am just tired of cringing at all the miscues this 32 year old woman makes–this 32 year old woman who doesn’t seem to have a clue. (Oh, God. I just had a vision of her with that maniacal grin on her face. Doesn’t it remind you all of the hyenas from the movie The Lion King. Was it Ed?)

      • FLORC says:

        Dena
Cheshire Cat grin is the popular animated version of her smile at times, but I like yours too!

  2. Sixer says:

I was supporting Novak and his glorious bottom. So yay!

The Royal Box was pretty crowded even for Wimbledon so no room for the Midds. Hugh Jackman was being bald. B Coop cried at the lack of Gerry. The Dragonflies wept and wailed and rent their clothes because Tommy didn’t even go, let alone play table tennis. And I don’t care about any of this because I actually like tennis.

    • Lilacflowers says:

And it was a great match. Plus Samuel L. Jackson, who manages to be bad-ass just watching tennis.

    • Nanea says:

The Beckhams were also in the Royal Box…

      • Dena says:

I really liked what Victoria had on. I usually don’t like much of what she wears or designs, I should say.

      • TrixC says:

But she looked so miserable the whole time – at least David seemed to be enjoying the tennis. I enter the ticket lottery every year and so far have never got finals – it kills me to see celebs who get to go for free, then act like they don’t even want to be there!

      • Francis says:

        I liked Victoria’s dress also.

    • Mia4S says:

Meh. I would rather have been at the Formula One event with Prince Harry and Michael Fassbender. 😉

    • Sixer says:

@ Mia – I’m ugh to all motorsport, Mia. Which is unfortunate, as they all love it where I live. Nigel Mansell has a karting track not so far away.

@ All – I also saw Chris Hemsworth and whatsherface and a few others. I wish the BBC wouldn’t celeb spot so much. Or at least, just stick with the old champions.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Agreed. I’m watching Wimbledon because I want to watch athletes in top form duel it out. Yesterday’s match didn’t disappoint in that regard. I had no need to see Bradley Cooper trying to hide when those two magnificent male athletes were battling it out for hours.

      • Mia4S says:

@Sixer, I’m with you on the *ugh* to racing but I’m also pretty indifferent to tennis. So judging strickly on the celebrity crowd I’ll follow the hot gingers. 😉

      • Sixer says:

        @ Lilac – I agree.

@ Mia – but, but, but, hot gingers be damned. There was Nole’s bottom!

      • Mia4S says:

Nole’s bottom? It’s OK @Sixer, I both understand and respect your choice. 😉

Honestly Prince Harry’s security was pretty tight. Fassbender on the other hand looked happy and reasonably accessible. And soooooo good! How far apart are these venues? Could I make both? Oh and hooray for the people who won and all that, etc.

      • Lilacflowers says:

As for that glorious bottom, I must say that I enjoyed the medical time out immensely while the camera focused so intently on that bottom and the work being done on the right calf.

  3. SpookySpooks says:

I was so happy Đoković won. His speech was lovely.
As for Kate’s hair thing – I never put my hair up because I think I look bad. Maybe she’s the same.

    • Sullivan says:

Plus, the weather is mild. Sunny, but not hot at all. I think her hair looks fine. In fact, she looks good overall.

    • Lilacflowers says:

His speech was very humble, especially since 90% of it was about Federer being God, with the remaining 10% being about new baby, girlfriend, deceased coach, living coach, and sacrifices made by family and friends.

      • SpookySpooks says:

Yeah, Novak is a class act. He reminds me a bit of Goran Ivanišević ( anyone remember him?) with all the goofy behaviour on the court.

      • notasugarhere says:

I remember watching an early GI match, might have been at Wimbledon. He just kept acing his poor opponent, who had never faced a serve like that. The opponent jokingly asked GI to lob him an easy serve, which he did, just so the guy had a chance to hit ONE of the tennis balls coming across the net at him.

      • Locke says:

I remeber Ivanisevic. Winning Wimbledon on a wild card! Wasn’t that movie with Paul Bettany inspired by his story?
And I remember when he cleaned the referee’s glasses.

      • Sixer says:

I had a bet on Goran the year he won Wimbledon! I bought a sofa with the proceeds!

      • ArtHistorian says:

I remember Goran losing to Agassi – a long, long time ago. I was in England at the time, and the poor guy was swearing in Croatian – and a lot of viewers complained about that, even though they had no idea what the man was saying.

    • FLORC says:

      The speech was perfect.

And Kate has often been seen in ponytails. She wears them on shopping trips. Events she prefers her hair down no matter what it seems.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Other athletes should learn from it. Yes, LeBron, I’m thinking of you.

  4. carine says:

There are weird rules with the Royal Box. I wouldn’t put too much thought into why the Middletons were sitting far away. There are seats for former champions, invited guests and honorary members.

    • FLORC says:

The Midds have sat in the Royal Box before.
There was talk last year they used it too freely so placing them far enough out of the Will and Kate frame might be a way of addressing it. Otherwise why not sit with your family?

      • AM says:

And I think the Midds were all in the Royal Box when they visited earlier during the tournament.

I do feel bad for Kate, in that they seem to be a very close-knit family and she has now been able to get them access to any number of extraordinary and exclusive events, but she’s never able to enjoy the events with her family. I’m sure she’s gotten used to it but it must be a bitter pill sometimes.

      • FLORC says:

        AM
The thing about kate and her family is they’re never far apart. They may be out of the frame, but still there. Or she is at their home. Or they’re all together on a shopping trip or on a vacation even if only for a weekend.

And they’ve of course benefitted greatly from her position while never being cut out of Kate’s life.

    • Megan says:

interesting factoid … The Royal Box does not belong to the BRF. It belongs to Wimbledon. Royals from overseas are also welcome to use it.

  5. Red Snapper says:

I can’t get over how much time they are spending together! Trying to get pregnant? Couples counseling? He has often seemed repulsed/disgusted by her recently.

    • Dame Snarkweek says:

Repulsed? Disgusted? Give me a break. Now bored and superior, sure.

    • FLORC says:

      Red Snapper
      Hi!
They are spending a lot of time together! And William doesn’t look annoyed, but he also hasn’t been around without a fun event. He’s recently got his way with his job as a pilot and further delayed his royal duties. He has done more leisurely events like this and Tour De France. Not much he can justifiably be upset about.

All couples have those uniting and distancing moments in their relationships. Peaks and valley kind of stuff. Now they’ve reached a peak and later there will be a valley, but after that another peak.

      • Red Snapper says:

Perhaps I should not have said “recently”. There have been so many occasions in the past where he seems like he’s at the end of his rope with her. For example, watch his reaction to her answers during the UNICEF appearance with Princess Mary. He can barely restrain himself from rolling his eyes in disgust. And while I was not posting during the Australia tour (sidenote: I’m an avid reader/lurker of these threads, I just don’t post often) I couldn’t help but notice the distance between Will and Kate in their photocalls. Actually I couldn’t believe that none of the regulars on these Kate threads wrote about it! Picture after picture showed them standing six inches apart with their hands, especially his, clenched in front of them. The body language was… “Don’t touch me, I can’t even look at you”

Maybe you’re right Florc, and they are just having good times and bad like a normal marriage, but, well, it’s not a normal marriage and I think it’s only a matter of time before it ends in tears. As the Queen herself predicted.

      • maybeiamcrazy says:

I really don’t think Kate and Will can’t stand each other. They seem to have an unspoken agreement between them. He gave Kate what she wanted. And Kate acts like adoring, proper wife. Everything is fine. I don’t believe that Will is a douchy husband as well. In a usual marriage he would be but since they both are comfortable with their arrangement, I don’t think he is being douchy by going vacations withot her.

But he doesn’t seem to be an attentive father which is disappointing. He is going to regret that in future.

      • FLORC says:

        Red
As far as times where William is caught on video, photos, or by spectators giving Kate the side eye or caught speaking out of anger or annoyance the instances are numerous. And they range from just post honeymoon to as recently as the Aus/NZ trip. Usually William spends much time away from Kate, but it seems he’s hanging around more..
Agree about the body language. William doesn’t hide it well and neither does Kate. Here though he’s relaxed. Now is that because he’s enjoying Kate’s company? Or because he’s hanging out with the Midds, delayed royal duties, and got another Helicopter job?

I think he enjoys his in laws company while postponing is obligations.

        BTW
We have the full Midds family plus Will and Kate.. Who’s caring for George and overseeing the renovations of 2 mansions?

      • Lady D says:

Red Snapper, when did the queen predict the failure of their union?

      • LAK says:

Lady D: after the 2007 reunion.

Redsnappers: The videos of these two are always more interesting than the pictures and they contradict the photos every time.

I will point out that in his more pissy moments, A royal reporter did say that they don’t spend time together as a family except for media events so there is that.

      • FLORC says:

        Maybeiam

I agree with your comment for the most part.
Where we differ, I think Kate is not completely ok with the playing her role part. I think a part of her really loves Will. Or more easily put I think they both like what the other offers them. Financial security/status on 1 side and a Happy family front on the other. Either way I think Kate would have to love Will more than an arrangementto bring a child into a basically loveless contract.

      • Francis says:

2007 breakup……When the Queen was told that William had reconciled or gone back to Kate , after the 2007 breakup, the Queen was said to say, it will end in tears.

      • maybeiamcrazy says:

@Florc I am sure Kate would love to have a happy, close-knit family like her own but I don’t think she loses sleep over it. It sounds ridicolous to me when people imply they hate each other. They stayed together 9 years before marriage, they both know what to expect from each other. Wills probably thinks he is superior to Kate, and while this is obviously an entitlement issue, Kate didn’t give him any reason respect her more. It is like Kate sold her soul for the ‘princess’ title. I hope she is happy with it.

      • hmmm says:

        @maybeiamcrazy

I think it is a marriage of convenience, utilitarian all the way, though I do think Waity does declare her ‘love’ for him to make herself feel better about her rampant climbing. Meanwhile, Wills simply does what he has always done, assured in the knowledge she’ll do whatever he asks of her, project any image he wants.

Imagine asking your new husband right after the marriage ceremony whether he’s happy! That says it all right there.

      • hme says:

‘The videos of these two are always more interesting than the pictures and they contradict the photos every time’

Isn’t that the truth. Take the hug from the Olympics cycling that everyone freaks about. The picture looks like a sweet moment between a couple. But in the video it is beyond awkward. William looks like he’s just grabbing some random stranger stood next to him and Kate’s all ‘wft dude’ and also never even looks at him.

Then there are the infamous ‘hand on back shots’ that all the will/kate loonies think look soooooo romantic. Again in the still pictures it does look sweet and like he just can’t keep his hands off her but the videos tell a very different story. In any video footage I’ve seen of the ‘hand on back’ moments he’s literally moving her where her wants her to go. I’ve even seen one or two where he’s practically shoving her. Not romantic AT ALL. He’s very impatient with her. Even this weekend at the opening of the tour de france when Kate didn’t hand the scissors back immediately after cutting the ribbon William practically snatched them out of her hand.

      • FLORC says:

        Dame Snarkweek
William did look more angry and annoyed post sail boat race and exiting helicopter when Kate wore the DVF wrap dress. Also annoyed at the Queen’s jubilee when William and others had to duck around Kate’s umbrella.

I do get your overall point though. Mostly he does seem more bored at events and he’s got an elitist chip on his shoulder.

        Maybeimcrazy
I guess I was pulling more from a few occasions of when they dated. Kate seemed really hurt by him. Not in a way of fearing he would back out of a future with her. More that she loved him and he hurt her more because there was that love.

Also how she announced that pregnancy. William leftfor one of his hunting trips with Pelly. Known to usually have company wives and girlfriends do not favor. The way she went about driving herself to a predetermined hospital, passing a few on the way was telling. The nail in the coffin was having the Midds goto pap waiting at the entrance. No way he could have known without a tip.
Anyways she got William to return quickly as people began to wonder why he left his pregnant wife alone so quickly.

I think part of William’s appeal is his title and lifestyle. I doubt they’d be together if he wasn’t. I just think Kate loves him. Maybe because she’s dependent. Maybe because she’s comfortable with him. Who knows. I just doubt she’s without a great deal of love for him.

    • Megan says:

In candid shots they always look happy to me. At public events William always looks he’s just had a root canal (except for charity polo matches). I don’t think it is Kate he’s annoyed with.

  6. Roberta says:

BBC coverage tried to get BCoop in a shot in the last 2 games but he kept putting his head down and then a shot of Beckham adjusting his jacket – but I think Hems & SLJ were there as well.

  7. Talie says:

Moving her family is probably more to do with not interrupting photo-ops of the couple.

  8. Peri says:

Am I the only one who thinks she got a haircut/new hairdo? She looks really age appropriate here. I like the whole look together even if I don’t particularly like the hair.

  9. Abbott says:

Didn’t Kate have that long green coat-thing for the Tour kick-off? Maybe she doesn’t sweat like the rest of us do. I break a sweat over a good brunch. Doubt she has that problem.

If the Middleton’s are subtly stunt queening their royal connections, then it’s probably a good thing the hammer has come down on that. At least boundaries and rules are being set somewhere.

Does Wimbledon count as Royal work?

    • notasugarhere says:

No, this was another day off for them. It is official work for the Duke of Kent, who is the patron/president.

    • FLORC says:

It’s been heavily rumored even before her marriage she had botox shots in the armpit.
Many women get those every 6 months or so to prevent sweat there. I’ve had it too.

“Does Wimbledon count as Royal work?”
I bet it will when the final tally comes in.

      • kristina says:

Link? I’ve been keeping up with her a looking time and I’ve never heard this ridiculous rumor.

      • notasugarhere says:

It doesn’t seem like a ridiculous rumor to me. It seems like it is pretty standard in Hollywood, because people don’t want photos with sweat stains going around the wire services. KM clearly gets lots of other work done, so this one seems like a possibility to me.

      • FLORC says:

        Kristina
Are you asking me to post pics of Kate’s botox armpits?
As far as the rumors they came along around the time of her nose and under eye jobs. circa 2007 for her get William back makeover. Her botox started around then too.

Like the botox it’s only proven through photos with traits that only occur from Botox. No one is dumb enough to come out and say this happens, but that doesn’t mean because it’s not said you can dismiss the evidence. Common sense plays a role here and unlike some celebs Kate has no desires to appear transparent and relatable. She doesn’t admit it.

But if you choose to believe she has never received botox that’s your choice.

      • Francis says:

For the wedding that was the Rumour that she was injected w Botox to prevent sweating on the big day.

      • FLORC says:

        Francis
I forgot about that specific example. Also the lace on her wedding gown was perfect. Those making it had to wash their hands every 30 minutes to reduce oils from dimming the pure white. On a high stress day who wouldn’t sweat. And on that material I wouldn’t risk a very minor stain on my dress that was to be displayed and seen by all tourist.

  10. Faye says:

All four of the other Middletons were in the Royal Box at some point during the last week and a half. There probably just wasn’t enough space yesterday since it was the final and such a highly attended match.

    #TeamNovak

  11. justme says:

I don’t think the Middletons being out of the Royal Box means anything. Over the last three years they have regularly frequented Wimbledon and usually not in the Royal Box. Yesterday there were a lot of guests in the box (including some actual royals – besides the Cambridges, I saw Prince Michael of Kent, his sister Princess Alexandra and his brother the Duke of Kent as well as the Duchess of Gloucester.)

Pippa was with Nico by the way, for all those who question whether they have broken up every time she is pictured next to another man!

  12. feebee says:

How cute…. not. That dress looks like it has mini tennis courts and tennis balls on it, or maybe that’s why she wore it.

I was totally engrossed in the match, it was a superb display. I was so nervous for Nole I had to pause the match at 4-4 in the fifth and take a breather. Luckily it didn’t turn into a repeat of Fed’s match with Roddick (16-14 in the fifth). Djokivic needed to win this one, sorry Roger. I fear what it might have done to him if he’d lost another GS final. But he’s back to #1 now, yay.

Loved his speech, a little Fed heavy but he’s a very thoughtful guy and it’s awesome how stoked he seems to be about becoming a dad, awww. I do prefer the Wimbledon ceremony more than the Aust and US ones where they make a big deal about the prize money (though at approx US$3M, it’s kind of a big deal).

I did see William and Kate having a chat with Novak when he went inside and they did alright in the small chat department. Restrained excitement I think. There’s no way, royalty or not I wouldn’t have given him a huge congratulatory hug.

    • Sixer says:

I thought Novak needed it more, too. It was a wonderful match, wasn’t it? Started out even, then ebbs and flows of who had the upper hand. And winning shots, not unforced errors.

The Wimbledon prize money is equivalent, btw. £1.76m for Novak, which I think is just over $3m.

    • Faye says:

They were openly rooting for Federer, so I don’t see them hugging Nole even if they were fans.

Faye, yeah I didn’t expect them to give him a hug, I was just talking about ME giving him a hug!

Sixer, the 2013 US Open was $2.6M so yes the $$ is pretty much the same, give or take half a million with exchange rate fluctuations, but who’s counting?! I know they work hard, it’s a tough grind and they have lots of expenses but holy cow the money in tennis and golf can be obscene.

      • Faye says:

        @feebee – My mistake! I second the motion :).

  13. Toniko says:

I was watching at Fox Sport. And it was embarrassing to see Posh trying to engage Becks, when cameras were on them, she was caressing his knee, slapping it and what not, but he couldn’t care less. Would it kill him to look at her and smile for two f..king seconds.

  14. Megan says:

Her hair looks so much better.

The Middletons were seated in a higher row in the royal box, which is apparently huge.

    • wolfpup says:

I think that the social climbing and jockeying for position, by some British folks, both hilarious and disgusting. I cannot imagine anyone in the US having a job created for them because they were feeling fussy; having all the extravagant spending and presents he receives, so he can feel like a “king”; and all the exotic vacations they need before they show up in public; and I find all the bowing and scraping of others in their presence frankly nauseating.

The commoners pay for them as in kings of yore…(and no shade on those folks at all). The Middleton’s are certainly “moving up”. Just like high school – snobbery is the same, but played by adults. I can’t even imagine the self-importance that they and the royals must have.

I call this system of government “institutionalized snobbery”. I don’t get it.

    • FLORC says:

Megan or Anyone that would know.
How often is the Royal Box used by Royals? And by that I mean the busier Royals or more respected Royals. That box can’t be empty for too long? Do others get invites to sit there or have seats open to them from knowing Royals?

      • Megan says:

Info on the royal box. Looks like tickets are mainly given out by the All England Club.

      • MinnFinn says:

Megan, thanks for the link. I was also wondering how non royals secure a seat there. The site says that players entering/exiting center court are to bow/curtsey if QEII or Charles is present. Does anyone know if that protocol is required of players who are not from commonwealth nations?

I’m curious what Brits who comment here think of celebrities being seated in The Box. I have to say it seems quite unfair that select American celebrities are given premium seats at center court for free.

Here’s from the website Megan linked to.
        *********************
The Royal Box has been used for the entertainment of friends and guests of Wimbledon since 1922. The Royal Box has 74 seats. They are dark green Lloyd Loom wicker chairs.
British and overseas Royal Families are invited as well as heads of government, people from the world of tennis, commercial partners, British armed forces, prominent media organisations, supporters of British tennis and other walks of life.
Invitations come from the Chairman of the All England Club, taking into account suggestions from members of The Championships’ Organising Committee, The Lawn Tennis Association and other relevant sources.
Guests are invited to the Clubhouse for lunch, tea and drinks at the end of the day.
Protocol – dress is smart, suits/jacket and tie, etc. Ladies are asked not to wear hats, as they tend to obscure the vision of those seated behind them.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@MinnFinn, don’t know about anyone else but Martina used to curtsey and people should bow to Martina.

      • AM says:

I think part of the more respected royals not attending regularly is they simply don’t have an interest in tennis. If HM loved it, she would be there every year like she is at Ascot.

      • notasugarhere says:

I’d think Sophie and Edward would have an interest in tennis, since that’s how they met. She wears a bracelet with a tennis racket on it, which could be a gift from him.

    • hmmm says:

      @MinnFinn,

Sounds like it’s all arbitrary. But then we don’t know who has requested a seat, either. Considering the flotsam and jetsam populating the royal box, I’m guessing it depends on who you know.

    • aquarius64 says:

The Middletons were not seated in the Royal Box at all. In one of the pictures in the Daily Mail they were seated in section 211, which is two sections away from the Royal Box.

  15. The Original Mia says:

Prior to becoming HRH, Kate wasn’t gracing us with her myriad of open mouth, over-exaggerated expressions. I’m not sure why she does all that stuff. It just makes her look deranged.

I for one was thrilled not to be inundated with endless pics of the Middleton sisters. The last time they were together at Wimbledon turned what little good will I had for Kate off. They were horrible, mean girls, especially to Mirka Federer.

The match was terrific. Best stuff. I was thrilled for Novak, but I would have been equally thrilled for Federer too. His little girls are adorable.

    • FLORC says:

They are so adorable! That’s a family that is just so cute.

All the lip readers and body language interpreters aside for that Wimbledon Midd sister moment… Kate and Pippa had mean girl trash talking faces on. Pointing at Mirka or atleast in her more than general direction didn’t help.

    • pippa middle says:

FLORC I’m nodding- no friends I guess she feel they too ‘common’ in the military others, not like her trashy waity self. QE2 PCharles need to ignore social climbing middletons – they are parasites. All their pounds run out with ‘strategy’ to. Hogtie P Willnot and now they going to sit on him and PGeorge for all their worth to support. Never mind the princes are royals and much is expected -not like their parasite lazy Doolittle family.

The Princesses A EnBea are disgusted and I’m sure will show waity what a shame she is with her lazy workless and trashy flashing.

Another, no true royal turn up functions as ‘surprize’, at QE2 garden party on P Philip birthday! No true royal for sure, they all have scheduled days. So where Waity get the ‘surprize’ appearance at BP that day. In long dress when she representing she go flashing.

I’m sure P Anne Eugene put her in place-such a publicity hog- Waity Carole n the middleton!

All of a sudden waity P Willnot. animated. At Wibledom – they so fake- PGeorge does his expression so they want people to think he got it from them. PG has his own strong personality definately not from either of them. Maybe more P Harry around him.

PHarry at Tour de France don’t even bother walking beside waityr, after the ribbon cutting he wal k with his brother. PWillnot also seem interesting in the female in the crowd. Watch him behind waity staring . Lazy Waity becoming or IS a liability – bare butt- YUKK!! Note she never try to hold down her dress both Australia or Canada.

  16. Lainey says:

Amazing how all her clothes since we learned the cost of KP have been recycled. Shocked there hasn’t been loads of articles praising her for it.

    • notasugarhere says:

Someone on a board just totaled up this look. $20,000 not including Diana’s ring. Most of the cost is in the charm necklace. Cannot believe that ugly dress cost $1500.

      • hmmm says:

        notasugarhere,

Yeah, I’m not feeling the love for this dress. Yet, how deceptive this frugality is when one tallies up the cost. I want to know who paid for it all.

    • Xantha says:

“Shocked there hasn’t been loads of articles praising her for it.”

Her repeating her outfits is an old hat now. And it seems even sillier now to praise her and claim she’s “thrifty” after the KP renovation costs came out because she and William clearly aren’t. Not to mention most of the outfits she’s been repeating weren’t cheap to begin with.

  17. may234 says:

They were probably sitting in a separate area because it was a final and too many people more important than Middletons were invited to see the game. At the end of the day her relatives are just her relatives, they aren’t royal and they aren’t celebrities in their own right.

    • aquarius64 says:

Being able to be close to Will and Kate should be more often, now that Mike has blood kin that will one day be king (George). But I still think the Middletons are seen as using Kate’s royal marriage for a come-up. I think the queen put the brakes on them after Pippa’s interview with Matt Lauer.

  18. Dany says:

ok i have to say this time is the first time i really noticed the use of photoshop on William and Kate. I know here are a lot of commentators who see it every time.
Yesterday there were at least 3 DailyMail-articles about their presence at Wimbledon. One about Kate´s outfit of course. I never read the posts, i only look at the photos, so i noticed that there were differences.
There was one photo of Kate and William. This pic was in every article and only in one article (maybe the first one) that photo showed all the marks on Kate´s forehead. In all other articles and photos her forehead was even (see the photos above). Seems the photoshop-people were too slow in the beginning

  19. magpie says:

I hate when people say they don’t have jobs…going to events IS their job. What kind of “real” job do you expect them to have?
I am no royal lover, but I like them well enough. And George seems to have a normal relationship with people and his mom unlike poor Nori.

    • Megan says:

I agree this is their job, which is why William wants a job on the ambulance squad. Going from being a search and rescue pilot to meet and greets, ribbon cuttings and correspondence duty must be a big come down.

    • notasugarhere says:

Ah, hit the wrong key, response disappeared.

This is the official patronage for The Duke of Kent, so for him this counts as an official engagement. This is not an official engagement for W&K, it is not their patronage. This is another in a long string of days off. They insist they cannot work more because they cannot leave PGTips. They dumped him on the Spanish nanny so they could go to Wimbledon, but they cannot work more? You can search The Court Circular online to see the history of official engagements. You can search The Royal Diary – future engagements to see what is coming up and see what “counts”.

“correspondence duty “?? Remember the 27 office staff? It isn’t like W&K are chained to a desk writing thank you notes all day. Someone else writes all of their letters and speeches, and does all of their correspondence. They sign what someone else writes.

Charles built the Princes Trust, which is more valuable overall to the UK than William flying helicopters will ever be. W&K set their own schedule. They choose to do galas and movie premieres. If they want to do more serious engagements, to do impactful work, all they have to do is DO IT. It is their choice. They are choosing fluff because that is what suits them. Fluff engagements, vacations, and decorating – that’s what they want to do.

Heaven forbid they spend a few hours a week meeting-and-greeting the peasants who support them, eh?

      • Megan says:

Notasugar – Wow, I didn’t know someone else writes their handwritten letters. Do you know if their letter writers go to forging school or do they just hire reformed criminals?

      • notasugarhere says:

The only hand-written one I remember reading about was the thank you note KM wrote to thank Wimbledon for the tickets a few years ago. I remember one note to a sick child was typed and KM signed it. If you can find other hand-written notes – full notes not just where they sign it – I’d be interested in reading about them.

      • The Original Mia says:

@notasugarhere, those are the only 2 notes I’ve seen too. I was disappointed she didn’t take the time to personally write to that child. But that’s our duchess.

      • hmmm says:

Not only was this not an official engagement, but she was wearing a dress bought for official engagements (I don’t know if that white eyelet dress is official). How blurred is the line between her own clothes and her official clothes?

      • notasugarhere says:

That confuses me too. She wore the white dress in Australia (running on the beach in wedges). If clothing is purchased for official engagements, Charles pays and gets reimbursed for it as a work expense.

      • MinnFinn says:

The Cambridges do need to pad their engagement tally for PR. I agree that it is not an official engagement but they went inside the clubhouse to meet and congratulate Djokovic afterward and I bet that will be their rationalization for calling it official.

      • AM says:

        hmmm,
Here’s one for you. They made a big deal about attending that forum last week in a private capacity, however, I spotted Rebecca Deacon walking behind them. She attends to Kate in her private life as well now?

      • hmmm says:

        AM,
I’m guessing that was a private, “official” capacity. However, you raise an excellent question- then what is Rebecca Deacon’s role in this ?

      • AM says:

I absolutely think it was the type of event that is appropriate for Rebecca to attend in her role, it just begs the question, what does private mean?

      • bluhare says:

Their personal notes are typed and Kate just signs them. I base this on stories I’ve read where Kate is lauded for sending a personal note to a child, and it’s typed and she’s just signed “Catherine” to it.

The handwritten ones were before she had staff. 🙂

  20. Francis says:

Kate’s Uncle Gary was also at Wimbledon for the Men’s Quarter Finals…not sure if he was there for the final.

    • MinnFinn says:

Uncle Gary of Maison de Bang Bang fame? Links? Any quotes from him? He is so entertaining. And didn’t Pippa look chic during her 3 visits to Wimbledon. I actually thought she out-dressed her sister and I really liked all 3 of the dresses she wore.

      • FLORC says:

Still can’t post links, but… Youtube still has him in that hidden camera drug sale. Bragging about his wing in BP. How William partied at his house where he’s taking drugs out for sale.
This man is just horrible. Whitewash Kate all you like, but he got it by extension and ugh. What scum.

    • AM says:

Was he in the Royal Box?

      • Francis says:

It didn’t look like the Royal box, he was in open seats, but probably not bad seats.
He posted a photo on his twitter thread.
He’s hilarious on some days, he doesn’t mention the Middleton’s in his twitter thread, except on rare occasions and it was basically a PR.George mention. I think IMO,Kate’s mum, (his Sister) has him on watch. He can talk but not talk about them, unless she and Gary are doing some odd pr defense of James or sometimes evenKate, he gave a US Magazine interview a few months ago . I’m sure that had to have been okayed by Sister Carole, because he mentioned, Kate in it ” how happy and normal Will and Kate are, yadayada
For the most part Gary seems to work harder than the Middleton family, from what I can tell of his thread.

  21. HoustonGrl says:

I think Kate has been instructed to keep her family at arm’s length, at least publicly. The Midds have simply been too eager to use the spotlight in their favor. Lots of embarrassing press reports about interviews, freebies and other perks, like repeated use of the royal box.

    • AM says:

I do find it curious that she hasn’t been photographed with her siblings in quite some time.

      • krisskrossapplesauce says:

Unless it is an official royal event, it seems that Kate is seldom photographed anywhere or with anyone. Although there are “sightings” of her doing this and that, no one dares to take a photo lest their phone be confiscated by the royal militia who accompany her everywhere.

      • Liberty says:

has she ever been photographed with a friend since the marriage?

      • FLORC says:

Kate is photographed often when not on official business. There might be a bodyguard blocking the shot a bit, but she is seen. Thing is she isn’t editted so the photos are unflattering and the shots are not published. You have to go to various instagram or photobucket sites to see them as they’re posted by civilians who were at the right place at the right time.

There’s been only 1 friend since the wedding that was only Kates. They were said to have had lunch and some shopping together. Another friend made Kate a godmother, but it was a mutual william and Kate friend.

If Kate has friends she sees that were not William’s 1st she must sneak out to see them around the same outing as her secret charity visits.

  22. pippa middle says:

Notasugar/ Red is right on- Willnot and anorexic lazy Waity want to move to the country for ‘pilot ‘work’ so they can have their separate lives stronger from the public eye and photogs.

He with his vacay with exs pals and she shopping n away from PG with middlet. All living previlege royal luxury and no work for HM and the firm/ P Charles!

What a shame these parasites. Willnot must be waking up from his decade of middletrash induce leeching or HM and P Charles shaking him out of them. King Harry!!

No other EU royal in-laws or UK royal behave so poorly and are so openly social climbering parasites. What a waste of space those midds are.

  23. pippa middle says:

P Willnot need ‘pilot work’ and workless Waity anorexic Doolittle need to move from London out of public view n photags, then they can continue more separate lives wihtout PGeorge.

Willnot with exs doolittle with middtrash parasite family; while both spending enjoying royal previdges and doing no work for HM firm PCharles. Give us hardworking King Harry!

Their fake animation at Wimbledon is a joke and so transparent. Suince people state PG have all these faces they trying to make it look like he got from being with the parents – NOT!! PG have his own personality, the facial expression maybe from uncle PHarry around him!
