Are Prince William & Kate going to spend the rest of the summer at Balmoral?

george1

This ^^ is a newly released “official” portrait of Prince George ahead of his first birthday. He’s already walking! Everybody is going royal-loonie for George’s birthday, which is on Tuesday. Every magazine has a story, and Prince George is on the cover of the new Vanity Fair and People. Us Weekly had a big story about him too, all about George’s “summer plans.” He’s a baby! He’s pretty much going to go wherever his parents take him. Although it would be funny if Prince Grumpy-Face wanted to summer in Como, Italy with Clooney. Anyway, Us Weekly says that the Cambridge Family is headed to Balmoral very soon:

Even Prince George gets summer vacation! The royal tot, whose first birthday is Tuesday, July 22, is likely spending the warm months with his mum, dad, and other relatives at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, and Us Weekly has all of the details. Continuing a centuries-long tradition, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are assumed to wind down this summer at the expansive estate in the picturesque Scottish hills. The stunning castle has been the royal family’s since the 19th century and boasts a total area of 50,000 acres, including forestry and farmland grounds. The large land provides space for multiple members of the royal family, as Balmoral will likely also host Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles, and Princess Anne, as well as guests.

The rural setting sets the tone for the activities in store for Prince William, Kate Middleton, and Prince George. The young prince will spend his days playing in the boat pool in the shallow banks of the River Dee. The little beach at the bank, where he gets messy and splashes in the water, is the same spot where his father, Prince William, had his own fun as a child. As George gets older, former palace chef Darren McGrady tells Us Weekly exclusively that George will get the chance to “ride the estate on a bike, and horse-riding too.”

Though he will be playing with “the usual kids toys” now, the prince will later transition to much more serious diversions. McGrady says the young royals start learning to hunt at Balmoral at “about 12 or 13.” They take hunting guns, “jump in a Land Rover and go out rabbit shooting.”
While it may be less refined than their time at the palace in London, the royal family still gets the royal treatment. McGrady tells Us, “there are about 100 staff at a time up there looking after the royal family.” This staff may be slightly parsed down for the Duke and Duchess, as he added, “William and Kate are really independent and don¹t have a full time cook at the moment. They like to do their own bits in the kitchen.”

As to what culinary confections are offered at Balmoral, the choices are endless. For breakfast “in the royal dining room it would be the more heavy, substantial dishes, like salmon kedgeree, poached kippers, kidneys, as well as the eggs and bacon,” McGrady explains.

Midday, there is often a picnic lunch, consisting of “sandwiches and fruit, and plum pudding.” The fruit is freshly picked as, “the Balmoral gardens are huge and they have the most amazing raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, and Victoria plums.”

The picnic lunch is followed by afternoon tea, with one large cake in the chocolate biscuit or honey and cream sponge variety, plain and fruit scones, two types of sandwiches such as meat or vegetarian cucumber, and pastries such as raspberry tartlets, chocolate eclairs, or Scottish shortbread fingers.

The formality of the royal family comes out at suppertime. “Everyone has to dress for dinner even if they don’t have guests,” McGrady tells Us. “The men usually wear kilts, it¹s really formal.” However, when it isn’t a sit-down dinner, the royals don “the tattiest, most casual dress you ever did see,” and head outside to grill and barbecue.

[From Us Weekly]

It’s still sort of crazy to think that this is how the Queen and the royal family chooses to spend their “down-time.” I’ve read time and time again that the Queen is really the only member of the family who enjoys all of this stuff, that everybody else hates all of the costume changes and mind-numbing solitude. Princess Diana hated it –she preferred London, where she could go shopping or go to lunch or gossip with her girlfriends. I wonder if Kate is the same way? I feel like Kate just goes along with whatever William wants, but I do wonder…

Also, the Daily Mail had an absolutely exhaustive article about the birthday party plans for Prince George. The basics: the royal family never does big parties for really small children, so it’s up to the Middletons to throw a big bash. Carole is throwing a Peter Rabbit-themed party in Bucklebury, complete with special presents from Carole, Pippa, “the Spanish nanny” (she’s getting him a cake) and “the Italian housekeeper” (she’s getting him lace). A source claims that Carole operates her family parties “like a military manoeuvre.” Oh and William got his son a “hand-stitched football.” Even Lupo had to get George something. You can read more about it here.

He is so cute, why I could just eat him!

    • Sarah says:

I know, right? He’s nothing but grumpy, adorable cuteness.

    • K says:

I think he kinda looks like Benjamin Buttons/Winston Churchill sometimes. But in a smoother, grumpier version. He’s a baby so he’s not ugly, just not cute to me.

    • harpreet says:

Cute and a little tyrant! I love that his new picture essentially says: “Bow Down”.

  2. MrsBPitt says:

They eat four meals??? How come they aren’t all fat????

    George is adorable!

    • Francis says:

Probably four small meals and low in fat perhaps.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

According to the article, the meals are huge and loaded with fat. They probably just don’t eat much.

  3. vava says:

In that photo, he reminds me of Winston Churchill. LOL.

I’d be surprised if they stay at Balmoral very long.

  4. Dena says:

He looks like a little old man with a comb-over😬

  5. Francis says:

I love his side eye and grumpy faces. So cute. 🙂

  6. Suze says:

The royal family is weird to our outside eyes. I’ve read that both Charles and William love the Balmoral interlude. I think Cams and Kate will simply have to learn to love it, too ; ).

LOL about Cheeks in Como, though. He is an interesting mixture of Middleton eyes and Windsor face (and Windsor attitude.)

  7. eliza says:

While the article may be about Balmoral and Prince George, all I can think about, as usual, is Kate’s absolutely awful blush applica tion. It makes me laugh.

    • Francis says:

Hahahaha bad makeup. Eyeliner, blush. Someone should send in some pros, Bobbie Brown maybe to teach her some good more natural makeup techniques.

  8. sigh says:

    He is just too adorable.

  9. AM says:

I know I shouldn’t consider the DM as a trusted. News source, but it’s still disappointing to learn the entire article is apparently fiction (as confirmed by Tanna, who likely would know). William played polo this weekend, so either there was no Bucklebury party or he missed it.

    • FLORC says:

Agreed. Tanna is in the loop on this. And if for some reason Tanna was out of the loop the other reporters would likely mock him like they have in the past. And Tanna would throw a fit and spill some mild dirt on the midds for shutting him out of the loop.

It’s a nice positive pr story, but that’s all it is. If hitory has taught us anything it’s William will never change his ways and Kate is never far from her parent’s side.

      • AM says:

The DM story appears to be spectacularly poorly sourced, as Charles and Camilla will be in Scotland and not at any party on Tuesday.

I did, however, like the bit at the end about Kate not bringing the nanny to Bucklebury and being relieved to hand George over to Carole the moment she walks through the door. Just the image that an hour in the car with George is about all she can take.

      • bluhare says:

I thought most kids conked out cold when they hit the car. A friend’s husband drove hundreds of miles getting their child to sleep as that was the only place that was guaranteed!

      • Francis says:

Tanna has sources in Bucklebury and possibly right inside the Middleton home 🙂
        (From what I hear)

      • FLORC says:

        AM
As much as I believe Kate is more a fair weather mother to George I think Carole likely scooped George up as soon as he got in the front door. It’s her only grandchild at the moment so he’s getting smothered in love and attention. I’m certain of this.

Now as far as no nanny… We’ll see. A nanny has traveled seperately or to meet up later before or just editted out of photos entirely.. Just enough time to get the shots of no nanny for the time. Plus, his nannies are all trained in a way to protect his safety like body guards.

        Francis
Tanna’s twitter is amazing when he breaks news or is out of the loop. He gets insider info that only the Midds could know as it happens in real time. Other reporters know he’s the inside man.

      • Francis says:

Yes,, and it’s been going on since Kate dated William at Univ. it is defiantly inside the Midds home.
Press keep saying that this family are discrete but they have leaked to him and Katie Nicholl for at least 9 yrs years.

  10. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

    Smocking! Made my day.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

LadySlippers, are you lurking? I miss you.

    • Malificent says:

Exactly my thought. I love smocking! If I could find a way to get my 7-year-old into smocked rompers, I still would!

    • bluhare says:

LOL GoodNames. I love it too.

    • L says:

@bluhare My sisters kids hated the car. Esp at that age, they just got car sick and cried and cried and cried. Not to mention the sheer stress of loading up the car (or watching her spouse do it)

      Maybe George is the same.

      • bluhare says:

Yeah, I know all babies are not alike, but I remember so many people saying they took the baby for a drive when they wanted him/her to fall asleep. George sounds like a handful.

      • FLORC says:

I still fall asleep with white noise and vibrations. Car rides, Vacuuming, etc..

It’s worth noting that spectators have always noted George leaving a car was either sleeping or looked to be alert after a small nap. Never upset and crying.
Although it was said during 1 of the changing of flights George hated planes and cried the whole way. Pretty typical baby behavior though.

        Bluhare
Maybe i’m not grasping the meaning of “handful”, but George seems pretty basic baby, no? He’s got great health, developing normally, and at least in public appears to be well behaved. Wouldn’t a handful be more of a disruptive baby? Or is it subjective?

      • bluhare says:

When I say handful I mean it positively, FLORC. Like he’s an active little boy with an eye for mischief. My favorite traits in little boys!

      • FLORC says:

Ah. Always getting into everything. I got it. Thanks!

  11. d says:

Balmoral sounds like heaven to me. I’d go and stay happily!

    • Skyblue says:

Me too! How fun to have 50,000 acres to bumble around while someone else fixes all the meals. I want chocolate biscuit cake and tea!!!!

    • Santolina says:

No kidding — berry picking, riding horses, Scottish shortbread fingers for tea and dining with men in kilts — what’s not to like?

    • sunsetsnow says:

Me too! I would love to go and laze around Balmoral like a royal.

    • bluhare says:

Me too. Except for the formal dinners. Maybe Sunday night would be OK.

    • TG says:

I know me too. I would never leave the peace and soiltude if Balmiral and dressing for dinner would be great fun, especially with their budget.

    • Lady MacBeth (Hiddles F) says:

It is not heaven at all.
I still would prefer a month on a Greek island……

  12. Talie says:

I think it sounds unusual to us to not spend summer holidays near a each, but they do that in the winter.

  13. Emmie says:

She really holds that kid like a sack of spuds :-/

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I think he’s just active and squirmy. I’ve seen plenty of pictures where it’s evident that they are very easy, natural and loving together. I don’t get this desire to make it seem otherwise.

      • ScrewStewrat99 says:

I hold my daughter like that when she gets really squirmy or is trying to get loose. It’s the only way where I feel like I have a safe grip and won’t drop her while she’s squirming.

  14. MediaMaven says:

Poor George inherited William’s combover……..I guess that’s better than sausage curls.

    • Francis says:

Yup, when the poor kids 24 ’25 ‘ it’s all down hill.
But….He’s a cutie now, so let’s enjoy those CHEEKS! 🙂

  15. Kim1 says:

If North can choose her clothes( no pinks or purples) then George can make his own “summer plans”.

  16. Itsetsyou says:

It’s probably kind of boring being surrounded with all those old and stuffy people with their rules and formal convo while on vacation? I wonder if Kate minds it or if she doesn’t care.

    • Francis says:

Kate crawled on bloody knees to get THIS she doesn’t mind Anything and if she did, she gets rid of the thought after a few seconds and thinks of the crown and being Queen consort one day. Kate would crawl on broken glass, naked through the streets of London, if William or the Palace told her that was a requirement to get the Throne, she probably revels in her Victory of getting baldy Prince Willie in marriage and now w child too. She loves it, even if she hated something, she’s not budging or complaining to William.

      • The Original Mia says:

Exactly! She’s not complaining about much. This is the life she wanted and outlasted all those other women for. Jokes on her since they’ve all said they didn’t really want the job in the first place.

      • Kristen says:

OK — this seriously made me LOL. So true!

      • bluhare says:

Do you really think it’s just the throne? I dunno, the romantic in me thinks she really does love William. Not to say she’d have gone after him if he was plain old William Windsor from Liverpool, but I do think she loves him.

      • maybeiamcrazy says:

I am sure Kate loves William but she loves the throne more.

      • FLORC says:

I just can’t get behind Kate being in this for “the throne”. Maybe more for the status, financial security, time she put in already, and a hope that she can reclaim those days of early love with William.

Though, if William was anyone else they would have never met, but she changed her life for him and what he liked. You need some pay out for that.

Carole though… Yea. Mothers should always teach their children to love themselves and love will find them. Not to adapt to another and hope for love, moderate monogamy, and a supportive luxurious lifestyle. That’s not right.

      • MinnFinn says:

Francis — Ha-ha I agree that Kate was on her knees a lot. Meeeeeoooooow!

      • Dena says:

@ Francis when u wrote that Kate would crawl naked through the streets it reminded me of my great-grandmother. She use to jokingly tells us kids that we were so d*mn greedy that we’d eat hell off the cross if we could. (I miss her so much. She was truly more than a grandma to me.)

Back to Kate . . . IMO, she is such a limp noodle of a sycophant that it’s . . . Well I had written some things that I think aptly describes her but then decided to edit myself . . . but she’s . . . well . . . Hmm. Okay. Here’s something: her hair looks shiny😁

      • pippa middle says:

Waity gold digging doormat doolittle is In it for the riches, eassy life or so she though – of only shopping, renovating and workless.
Something gives or she is pining ffor luxury vacation. .long overdue multi shopping! .

Since that bare bum flashing the world, on Tour representing BRF QE2, she looked worried some – like a good royal monarch dress down or up warning. N the RF ladies I.e. Princesses Anne B*E embarassement n they malking her know.. Throne for her may be further away.

      • hmmm says:

I don’t understand why it is so difficult to believe that Waity is a golddigger and a social climber. A calculating, ruthless one at that if reports of her callousness are true. She sounds like someone incapable of real love yet willing to appear biddable if it advances her goals; after all it is easy to convince oneself of love and look the part.

She looks like a victim because she can be inept. IMO, she’s just not that good at image building, yet does trust that she has the power of the RF and hubby behind her and she is right- she can depend on being “well taken care” of as long as she doesn’t rock the boat.

      • bluhare says:

If she’s a gold digger she could have done better. But I do think you can be a social climber and love your partner. It doesn’t mean I think she’s a perfect royal, but I do think she loves her man.

      • hmmm says:

        Bluhare,

I believe she believes she loves him. As for doing better? Perhaps it was about doing higher rather than better. I imagine gold diggers have their standards as well.

      • may234 says:

You’re talking as if you PERSONALLY know any of the people involved in this. Judging by how passionate you feel about this, you sound pretty jealous of Kate 😉

  17. P.J. says:

God do I just adore this baby! Prince G has certainly won over world. That new People cover of him is just delightful 😊

As for the food stuff, I’ve watched several Royal Family sanctioned documentaries in which cameras were allowed to follow the Queen and her staff around her many different residences for a year at a time and though I’ve loved them all (my favorite was the one on Windsor!) the one troubling theme that has been present in each one was the ASTONISHING amount of food that gets unnecessarily prepared in the royal kitchens all day every day and ultimately is wasted. The chefs of each palace make enough food to feed about 8 people JUST for the Queen’s individual private meals-she prefers to dine alone-and really, she only picks. For example, the staff will make an entire family sized shephard’s pie from scratch for her for lunch and after she’s taken a single small slice, no one else can touch it so it gets dumped. It’s so heartbreakingly wasteful!

As for Kate & Will, I vividly remember the leak from the kitchen at the residence they stayed in during their tour of Australia that said they specifically asked that things like biscuits, muffins and scones NOT be set out during their stay as they eat very low carb and did not want to waste food. Which, I mean, good for them! Let’s hope that Balmoral pays attention to this request during their time there. Hopefully Kate & Will (and certainly passionate environmental activist Prince Charles) will be able to usher in a new era that doesn’t believe in constantly over-using precious resources all in the name of “tradition.”

    • bluhare says:

That just seems so strange, doesn’t it? The Queen is supposedly thrifty so why wouldn’t leftovers be served to staff or something? Is that not allowed because of health and safety or something?

    • booboobird says:

Reading the article I was wondering about that. What they do with all the leftovers cuz it sure sounds like a lot of food. Just the description of the breakfast dishes puts me to sleep. All that heavy food overload. I love to eat and actually eat the most in our household of 5 (of which 4 are boys) but breakfast is never such a heavy meal. You would think they are getting ready to plow some fields.
and who is to know whether servants ate the leftover pie or it had to be given to pigs/dogs. Why is nobody allowed to touch it once it’s been touched by QE II?
I’d love to go there. I’m so tired of thinking about what to make for each meal. Hardly finished breakfast and gotta start thinking about lunch already. Should plan the whole week but I guess this just feels more adventurous. Lol

    • I’m sure in the documentary they said it got dumped, but I can assure you that those pies are probably either getting eaten by staff or donated. I’m guessing that there are a lot of leftovers being passed around down the stairs…

    • Suze says:

I hope they have rethought that process. There are plenty of people around the palace who could use a good, free feed – if what I’ve read about the wages for royal family staff are true.

Not to mention the many subjects of HMtheQueen who are a little skint right now.

      • ArtHistorian says:

I don’t know if it is an urban myth, but I read somewhere that the Queen’s Corgis are better fed than the servants. Apparently, they get sirloin steak every day.

      • bluhare says:

I’ve read that too, AH. Personally fed to them by the Queen.

      • FLORC says:

There’s thrifty for the public to know, but it’s just for show imo.
Same with the modest Christmas gifts. They spend all year spending like mad and it would look pretty awful if they continued to indulge when everyone else in indulging. People wait all year to save up and have that 1 day for gifts. If the Windsors got showy with that attention would be paid in the worst way.

    • Lucky Charm says:

Why on earth would they make a family size meal for just one person, anyway??? That seems so strange.

  18. bettyrose says:

“Mind-numbing solitude…” <– that is what I always think when these rural retreats are described. How are they not all raging alcoholics just to deal with the tedium? Don't get me wrong, I enjoy hiking and quiet reflection as much as the next person, but not for months on end. But I don't really know how to relax, so I'm not the best judge.

    • bluhare says:

This ex-raging alcoholic thinks a month at Balmoral (except for the hunting) sounds lovely. Lots of things to do, quiet corners to read a book and town isn’t that far away (is it?).

      • bettyrose says:

Sorry, I realize that comment was pretty insensitive. I’ve had an issue with binge drinking or eating when I feel trapped (I.e. locked in a family gathering with no control over my own daily schedule). So the Balmoral holidays sound like my worst nightmare.

      • bluhare says:

Then we need to go together, bettyrose. I will torture you with tedium so you want to binge drink and then refuse to allow you to do it!

        Sounds like heaven. 😀

      • bettyrose says:

        Bluhare –
With the right devious partner, I can turn the whole affair into a Jane Austen novel: We’ll gossip mercilessly about everyone’s finances – cackling with glee at those barely pulling the monthly income of a minister – plot elaborate matching making schemes, and when the schemes fail practice the art of wit in our cutting remarks to the heartbroken. Then, we’ll take endless walks through the grounds, hope for a torrential rain fall to drench us, and then fake illnesses for weeks on end to earn the bedside visits of the most eligible bachelors in the shire. Okay, now I’m starting to have fun. 😉

      • bluhare says:

I have to admit, you’re making it sound a lot of fun, bettyrose. Then we can go to the Braemar games and watch men in kilts throw things.

      • Lady MacBeth (Hiddles F) says:

        @bluhare

The nearest village is Braemar. The nearest town? Hahahaha

The nearest town is probably Aberdeen, 50 miles.

  19. Racer says:

All that nature and privacy sounds divine, IF one is able to frolic as you please. A retreat that involves a schedule of when to get up, sleep, eat and change clothes sounds like a militant nightmare. What’s the point of having relaxing time with family if every move is dictated.

    • name du jour says:

My thoughts exactly. I’d rather eat crackers and cheese every day and have the option of sleeping in and wearing comfortable clothes.

  20. anne_000 says:

If only the media would stop saying that W&K don’t really need as much staff blah blah independent blah blah do things for themselves blah blah.

  21. Xantha says:

“William and Kate are really independent and don¹t have a full time cook at the moment. They like to do their own bits in the kitchen.”

First off, can we take a moment and laugh at this part? Oh yeah they’re totally independent what with their whole “Have everyone else pay their way” mentality after all.

And second, I have to side with those who think Balmoral sounds not fun. There’s also an air of stuffiness to the whole thing, like they are incapable of truly relaxing around each other, even though they are family.

    • Suze says:

You know, I thought the whole article was written to get that little gem of “Kate and William fending for themselves” out there. OK, media, we get it. The two of them barely make use of any of the many number of staff at their disposal. They are modern. They are independent.

I read that Kate and William don’t actually stay at Balmoral, but in another cottage on the property (that is “theirs”, I think the queen gave it to William some time ago), so I think that they are not shackled to the routine as much as you might think.

I don’t know about mind-numbing solitude being a huge factor up there. With 100 servants, the entire royal family, and all the guests that rotate through the place, I think a bigger problem would be finding a corner to spend time alone.

      • tessy says:

50,000 acres, I think they can find a corner to get away to. I wonder if they have horses? I’d get a picnic lunch made up every day and take off with my camera and a good book every single day on my horse. That would be heaven.

      • bluhare says:

They have horses. I think the Queen breeds highland ponies up there too.

I have to admit, going riding on the moors and having lunch sounds wonderful. As long as it isn’t freezing. You never know up there.

PS Suze, I think you’re right. They have a house the queen gifted them. So they can go to the big house for stuff and stay at their own place.

Bettyrose, that’s what we need. A cottage with 24/7 access to the big house and stables. And a Range Rover with a man in a kilt driving it for our trips into town.

      • Suze says:

True Tessy, if you venture out of the house you could probably hide from the relatives tripping over themselves :).

      • Suze says:

True Tessy, if you venture out of the house you could probably hide from the relatives tripping over themselves :).

    • MinnFinn says:

I do wonder how much HM’s kids have to adhere to her schedule while they’re there. If Kate/William have their own separate cottage like other posters are saying and they have the option to sometimes join or not join HM’s official activities at the big house then it sounds really great to me. I saw old video of a ball at Balmoral where the Windsors and the newlywed Diana were having a great time doing a traditional Scottish folk dance. I love that stuff and country life so I could really enjoy Balmoral if given a fair amount of freedom to get away when the in-laws start to grate.

  22. Lara K says:

Balmoral sounds like it could be divine – it has all the elements of a wonderful summer getaway. BUT with all the restrictions, scheduling, and unnecessary royal protocol, I bet it’s a total drag.
Honestly any vacation that was that scripted would be rage-inducing.

  23. Ncboudicca says:

So, is Balmoral a private residence or does it belong to the Crown? Just wondering what happens if the referendum for Scottish Independence passes? If it’s a private residence, is the Queen paying taxes on it? If it’s a Crown property, can the Scottish government “seize” it after independence? (Assuming the vote goes that way).

    • Suze says:

It’s the private property of the queen.

    • Lady MacBeth (Hiddles F) says:

Balmoral castle is Queen’s private property and Scottish state would keep the Queen as their monarch anyway, so no seizing of royal private properties. Holyrood would be open to royals staying there too.

You can also visit Balmoral in certain periods of the year, I did. Grounds are open and two rooms inside are open too.

    • LAK says:

Scottish state would take Holyrood as that is a crown property. Balmoral is the Queen’s private estate as are several other properties in Scotland currently enjoyed by Charles so no difference to her there.

  24. aquarius64 says:

George is so cute in this picture!! 🙂

But I am not feeling his birthday party being thrown by the Middletons. It seems like it’s more for them than for him, just like North’s party. This party screams “our grandson is a prince of the blood royal and he will one day be king”. He’s one. Give him balloons, presents and a smash cake and call it a day. (For those who may not know, a smash cake is a small version of the official birthday cake. Instead of cutting the first piece, the birthday baby “smashes” his or her hand into it and have at it, messy face and all.)

Baby 1st birthday parties are never for the baby. They’re for the parents and their friends.
Though the pictures are nice to show the child later on it’s not about them at that age. Parents spending lavishly to throw themselves a party.

Lovely bit of fiction by DM.

I don’t understand the framing of this picture. He’s at a butterfly exhibit, but there’s nothing to indicate he isn’t on the patio at home. The Lamebridges need to employ the photographer who takes Princess Estelle’s photos. Those are cute and show her adorable personality.

There’s a couple more coming tomorrow night.

The only excuse I can think of is maybe he’s so active this was the best they could do. Would love to see what the rejected photos looked like. I also still think they should release a photo Kate took of him at some point, it might be more engaging.

They have done that in Denmark – the DRF has released quite a few private family pictures that CP mary has taken of her children. Including some wonderful ones of Prince Christian’s first birthday – him, his parents and a cake with a candle. Very cute.

Some really wonderful ones of Prince Christian, also by CP Mary:

Mary has a good eye, AH. Lovely photos of her children.

The baby with the cake looks so serious. LOL!!!

      • ArtHistorian says:

Little Christian – he’ seems like a he’s serious kid. It was lovely how he held his sister’s hand and waved at the christening of the twins. I recently read an interview with a professional chef that had worked for them during an Australia tour and she said that CP Mary would come into the kitchen with the children and bake cookies – and then Christian would put some aside on a plate (and on a shelf) to save them for later. Really cute!

A friend of mine have meet both prince Christian and princess Isabella. He said that Christian was serious and sweet and that Isabella is a out-going firecracker, which also can be seen on videos. She really loves the attention. Her parents also said that she has a more volatile temper than her older brother.

Exactly Mia – Kate’s assistant Rebecca Deacon plus nanny Maria were at that photo shoot. If this is the best of the lot of photos, what a waste of everyone’s time. Of course George is adorable in this snapshot but any casual photographer could have taken that on the grounds of KP.

The photo setting confirms my theory that William’s obsession with family privacy means no photos for public release will ever be taken inside the Cambridge private residences. Charles and Diana had lots of photos taken of their family inside their homes, so I assume protection officers are OK with it.

This link is evidence that a small entourage accompanied the Cambridges to their photo shoot at the butterfly exhibit.

      • Suze says:

The carefully edited photos of the royals at home were actually excellent PR tools. I don’t think that they were a terrible intrusion either. I agree that William does seem to have put a stop to it, at least for now.

It’s too bad. I like seeing interiors of palaces ; ).

      • bluhare says:

I agree, Suze. Maybe Kate’s embarrassed about the purple walls.

  26. Lisa says:

I’ve not read about how the members of the royal family feel about the “mind-numbing solitude,” but if I were one of them, I would probably enjoy some time away from events, photographers, and loads of people. Besides, they’ve got each other and what sounds like an enormous staff to keep them company. 🙂

I’m not saying their lives are difficult (though I’m sure they have their difficulties), but I live on my own in an urban area and nobody but my friends take photos of me, and I wouldn’t at all mind a few weeks in the country. That sounds absolutely lovely!

  27. tifzlan says:

All that food sounds so delicious…

  28. Jocelyn says:

George is really adorable. I find all of the stories about his life so far ridiculous though. What is he so busy with? Sleeping and eating animal crackers? The food list sounds soooo good. I would love to be there even if it’s boring just so I could eat that food.

  29. Megan says:

The look on George’s face says he is about to undo all the hard work of whomever gave him a bath and brushed his hair.

  30. Abby_J says:

That little smocked sailboat outfit is my favorite thing ever. He is so adorable!

My wee little guy had very similar outfits.

  31. Kate2 says:

He is an absolutely adorable baby boy. I just wanna squeeze him.

  32. Lady MacBeth (Hiddles F) says:

    It is a nightmare actually.

Visited Balmoral in June, five years ago, temperature was like 7C degrees (45 F) at 10 am while in the rest of Scotland was about 27C (80F). The castle is in the middle of a valley, with a small river going through it, the grounds are huge but mainly woodland. To be honest, in Scotland I would have given millions to stay in Glamis castle (where the Queen Mother was born) or Dunrobin Castle , but Balmoral… No way!
Completely on Kate’s side, if she hates it 🙂 and I can’t blame Diana either 😉

  33. LILAG says:

So basically summers at Balmoral is just like another episode of Downton Abbey
