‘Weird Al’ Yankovic has ‘never’ done illegal drugs & is ‘mostly’ a vegan

Weird Al Yankovic

I’ve been observing the internet’s love affair with “Weird Al” Yankovic from afar. The man has made an astoundingly lucrative living by making fun of pop music hits, which blows my mind. I guess there are stranger ways to pay the bills (gossip blogger, anyone?). Anyway, Al recently dropped his 14th studio album, Mandatory Fun. People are kind of going crazy over his “Word Crimes” song, which is a parody of “Blurred Lines.” The song is a must for grammar nerds, especially the part where he puts “literally” on blast.

This newest record earned Al his first #1 record of his 30-year career. Rolling Stone was at Al’s home when his agents told him the news, and he got all teary eyed about it. Al’s wife (Suzanne Krajewski) was there too, and she comforted him: “Sweetie, it’s just people loving you like they always have.” Aww. Here are some highlights:

He’s never done illegal drugs: “A couple of times I’ve had Morphine because I’ve been in extreme pain,” he says. “But I’ve never done drugs recreationally. I’ve been around people that smoked dope, pot, Mary Jane, reefer. I enjoyed being around those people in college because it was very easy to make them laugh. But it was never my thing and my parents drilled into me not to ever take drugs, so out of respect for them I never did. Maybe when I’m 75 years old I might be ready for them. We’ll see what happens.”

He owns Heavy D’s old home: “I don’t know if he remodeled it, but a lot of things here in this house are very Heavy D-sized. My wife is a wee woman, she’s not very tall, and it’s difficult for her to stand at our bathroom counter because they’re a little taller than normal. So everything in this house is a little oversized. My best friend from high school said to me, ‘Yeah, I think I saw a pr0n shot in your house.’ I think an Andy Garcia movie was shot here, too. There’s a lot of history here: rock & roll, pr0n and the Yankovics.”

His 11-year-old girl, Nina: “She’s such an ideal kid. She likes playing outside, animals and nature. I was always watching TV at her age. Where did we go right?” They camp out on their home’s deck too. “All four of us get into the tent,” says Nina, counting the dog as a member of the family. “We take out mini marshmallows and put them on sticks and roast them over a candle. It’s really fun. Sometimes an owl comes onto a tree and we look at him with binoculars.”

Al had a phone crush on his wife: “I hadn’t even seen her, but I already had a major crush. She was asking me all these questions about my life and I said, ‘You can just watch my VH1 Behind The Music tomorrow.’ I guess we did get married a little late in life, but neither one of us had been married before and neither of us intends to be married again. The Behind The Music made too much of a big deal out of the fact that I was pushing 40 and still single. I wasn’t upset about it at all. I enjoyed being single. But when I got married I found I was even happier, and when I had a kid I was even happier, still.”

He’s “mostly” a vegan: “Occasionally I cheat and eat dairy. So I probably have to give up my hardcore vegan card. It began in 1992 when a friend gave me a book called Diet for a New America, which makes a very strong argument for vegetarianism for ethical, health and socio-political reasons. After I finished the book it was hard for me to rationalize eating meat anymore, so I stopped. At first, I couldn’t imagine not eating turkey at Thanksgiving, but it became pretty easy. I didn’t miss it.”

[From Rolling Stone]

The full interview is pretty cute for Weird Al fans, so go read it if you’re into him. His wife admits she was put off by Al’s public persona until she actually met him. He’s not nearly as obnoxious as she expected. LOL. The journo does discover one truth to Al’s image: A closet that contains over 300 different Hawaiian shirts. How does he ever decide which one to wear on a given day?

Al says he won’t be going on tour again until next year because it’s “exhausting” to do six shows per week. He always puts up his crew and band in hotels but prefers to bunk up in his tour bus. What a guy, and he seems very sweet, warm, and grateful for his success. I still want to sneak up on him and chop that hair off.

Just goes to show you how wrong you can be when judging people on their appearance alone. I always assumed he was sort of a jerk or weirdo. He seems very sweet and nice. I guess I’m not as accepting and nonjudgmental as I thought. Something to work on.

    • Erinn says:

He seems like (to me) someone who knows when to turn it on and off. I think if he didn’t, he wouldn’t be quite so I remember the story years ago now, about him losing both of his parents, and how incredibly horrible that must have been for him. His family is beautiful. I’m so happy to see someone who’s a bit more off-beat finally getting his #1 album.

      • doofus says:

yeah, his little girl is so cute. Never even knew he was married!

        Love Weird Al, always have…

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

Yeah I’ve always found him really congenial and self-aware– even self-deprecating– in interviews. He’s the kind of person I’d like to be friends with.

    • Snazzy says:

Nah, it’s easy to make that mistake when you don’t know much about him. We all make judgements, we’d be lying to ourselves if we said we didn’t. The trick is to be aware of it, and be able to adapt based on new information 🙂

I’ve been a fan for years, since Fat came out (I’m such a nerd, and an old one too, I know!!..) and so I’ve read a lot about what a nice guy he his. And I love the word crimes song … it’s the best!!

I’m so happy that this album was such a huge success 🙂

  2. hutter says:

I’m really happy for him, he’s the first comedian in forever to have a number one album! And his wife and daughter are absolutely gorgeous and come across as really sweet in the article. 🙂 I love Suzanne’s hair!

    • Tiffany :) says:

I’m really happy for him too! I have loved him since I was a kid. He has always seemed so nice and sincere.

    • Ange says:

Me too! She is a gorgeous woman and has that beautiful olive skin tone to pull off the grey. Man I wish I could just let my hair go natural like that but I’m only 33 and pasty as hell lol.

  3. Remember The '80s says:

Have always loved Weird Al because he never took himself or anyone else seriously and with all the truly warped things in the world, his schtick was always a sweet, funny kind of twisted.

Happy to read about a celebrity for ONCE who isn’t a complete f*** up. His wife and kid look like great people and I love that he spends time looking at stuff with his daughter through binoculars when they camp out. What a great dad he must make.

  4. Badirene says:

Kinda off topic but his wife is smoking with that gray hair. She looks great, my grays are a little jealous at being hidden in any way possible.

    • Kiddo says:

Yeah, that’s what captivated my attention, the rest was dry. That is some beautiful silverish gray hair and her face still looks youthful. Mine will never look like that, I think you need the black as a base, no?

      • I hear a lot of people say “mine could never look like that”, but it’s rarely true. As a natural hair wearer since my 39th year (about to turn 43), you’d be surprised by how you look. In a good way. Takes some getting used to, but I highly recommend it. Of course Im biased, but I get a surprising amount of complements…from guys, of all things. The last time it happened, the dude was probably like 19….couldn’t believe it.

So no, you don’t necessarily need to be dark brunette to have nice silver. You get a starker contrast, but the lovely thing about it us no two heads are alike, and yours is unique to you.

      • Amberica says:

I have naturally drab ash blonde hair that has looked grayish since I was like 19, but that’s the shade of blonde. I’ll never know if it’s turning gray, because I hate the color it naturally is.

    • Sixer says:

I am SO glad to hear people saying this! My hair is grey like that and has been since I had chemo at about 30. Hair fell out, grew back mostly iron grey on a dark base.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Bet you’re gorgeous! Glad you’re better.

      • Sasha says:

That is the best look !
My mom has those colours- silver, white and gunmetal’ . I never noticed it until people would say “wow what great hair!”
        You’re a babe! Work it!!

      • Sixer says:

I hate to say it, but unkempt is probably a more accurate adjective to describe me than gorgeous! Merci bien for the good wishes, though, GNAT.

      • Kiddo says:

@Sixer, I will beg to differ. You are a very humble soul. Glad you stuck around in life.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Beautiful. I have gray in my hair and I can’t wait until it turns a pretty color. Right now it’s just mousy looking over blonde so I hide it, but when it gets to where the majority of it is silver, I’m going to be so happy to let it be natural I think she’s lovely.

      • Badirene says:

I am in the same boat, few grays on black, as soon as it turns silver I am rocking the look.

To Sixer above, glad you are better and kicking ass here on the comments!

    • Pandy says:

Yes, she’s making me wantto give up the hair color …

    • CatJ says:

Just this weekend a woman asked me where I got my streaks done. She wouldn’t believe me that it was natural. I haven’t coloured my hair in 20plus years, (and only maybe 4 times in all) and decided I just didn’t want to deal with the touching up, and cost. So, now I have, at 57,
“professionally done” looking streaks and highlights, and they are all mine. 🙂

    • Reece says:

Honestly that’s the one thing I’m looking forward to with age, the silver hair.
And I was born with gray hair but it hasn’t turned yet.

    • Adrien says:

Japanese people look great with silver hair. They do not even attempt to dye them. I want that when I’m all gray, if I still have hair (lol). The key is to have a shiny, healthy hair. Most silver mops look dry and lifeless.

  5. Eleonor says:

He seems a really interesting person, and I like his wife grey hair!

  6. fairyvexed says:

I read that as “virgin” and went…….?

  7. Jenns says:

Good for him. Word Crimes is awesome, but Amish Paradise will always be my favorite.

    • doofus says:

I always liked “I Lost on Jeopardy”.

    • Snazzy says:

OMG Amish Paradise was amazing!! HAHAHAHAHA

    • Lisa says:

I love Amish Paradise, haha. Played it so many times…

    • Happy21 says:

The Saga Begins (I think that’s what it’s called) a take on American Pie about Star Wars is a nerd’s wet dream. I love it!!!

      • JustChristy says:

Yes! My my this here Anakin guy, may be Vader some day later, now he’s just a small fry, but he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye, saying soon I’m gonna be a Jedi…soon, I’m gonna be a Jedi.

Love that so much 😀 When we were small, my brother had his “Weird” Al Yankovic cassette. I think we wore that tape out, or maybe our mom hid it from us, but I do remember being particularly fond of “I Love Rocky Road.” Weird Al forever!

    • Emily C. says:

“White and Nerdy” is my favorite. I identify with it. A LOT.

    • Apsutter says:

“Trapped in the Drive-thru” all the way! So hilarious

  8. Polly says:

I love his wife’s hair as well, it’s beautiful. I also think it’s really interesting the way he describes his house. Wouldn’t most people with his wealth (or a lot of people with no wealth, foolishly) remodel a bathroom if the counters were too high? As a fiscal responsibility nerd, that part of the interview really made me love him and his family.

  9. aenflex says:

He’s actually quite intelligent as well. Watched him on some old documentary and was surprised at how sharp and eloquent he is. I’m an 80s and early 90s person, so I’ll always have a small spot for Weird Al.

    • Sumodo1 says:

I found this on Wikipedia: Yankovic attended California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo where he earned a degree in architecture.

    • Emily C. says:

Comedy is difficult. You cannot be a good comedian without being extremely intelligent. Comedic acting is also much tougher than dramatic acting.

  10. Pomegranate says:

    Typo on Hawaiian “shirts” lol.
    I love Weird Al.

  11. Belle Epoch says:

    Hawaiian SHIRTS not sh*ts hahahaha

  12. jen says:

Mandatory FUN is the name of the album.

  13. JM says:

LOVE Weird Al!!! Like from all the way back to My Bologna. Fat, Gump and Smells Like Nirvana are still my favorites and Perform This Way (parody of Lady GaGa) gets honorary mention not only for the song but the hysterical video too. He is so funny and smart (went to MIT) and seems like a genuinely good guy. Behind The Music interviewed his friend Victoria Jackson and she joked Al’s addiction was pie. Glad he finally got a #1 hit!

  14. eliza says:

He sounds wonderfully normal and like a really nice man.

  15. Eileen says:

His daughter is adorable and his wife is beautiful! I heard on a news clip that he’s an architect? Anyway I think he’s a genius!

  16. Jay says:

Couple typos: Mandatory Fun not One, and I think you mean Hawaiian shiRts. 🙂

  17. L says:

He did cut his hair short a few times and it either turned into a poof, see exhibit A
    https://unfilteredpop.files.wordpress.com/2011/07/weird-al-yankovic-like-a-surgeon.jpg

Or he had to flat iron it to make it look okay (And everyone freaked out that he cut his hair-this was back in 1998 around the same time he got lasik and lost the glasses)
    http://i.imgur.com/iCbFa.jpg

    • Secret says:

I really like the second picture, but I guess he looks too “normal” like that. I can’t stand the hair. I thought he was great in the 80’s, he is still great, but I hate his hair now and that’s what I think of whenever I see him now.

Did I mention I hate his hair? But as long as he doesn’t mind it- more power to him.

    • Tiffany :) says:

Wow, I am so confused because Weird Al with short, straight hair is kind of cute! Am I going insane?!?!?

      • Esmom says:

Unless we’re both losing our marbles, I get it. He looks almost unrecognizable and really good looking. The long curls overpower his delicate features, I think.

      • sigh((s)) says:

Nope. He’s really cute there. We’re all insane , I guess.

    • Adrien says:

He looks like Ryan Gosling on the second link.

  18. Christin says:

I saw him in an interview years ago (possibly the one he suggested his future wife watch) and he came across as a humble, smart guy. He was very sweet when talking about his parents.

I’m glad he is having this new round of success. His parodies are great. I watched a couple of his new videos this weekend and had a good laugh.

  19. Esmom says:

I’m happy for his success. As a grammar nerd I really appreciate Word Crimes. He’s done some hilarious, witty spoofs and I’m sure he’ll always have fodder for more if he’s up for it.

I’m charmed by his family life, too. I love the image of them camping on their deck, roasting mini marshmallows and gazing at owls.

  20. lisa says:

i wish people would say plant based instead of “not quite vegan”

but im feeling really irksome today

  21. Dawn says:

I was babysitting for my nephew who is a picky little eater and before I knew it I was singing to him Eat It…and he was laughing his butt off thinking that I am the funniest! And after he quit laughing so hard he did at least try a few things. I have to say it made me stop being so irritated with the kid and we had a good laugh and all was better! Thanks Al! And it truly shows how intelligent one must be to change those lyrics and keep it all together without using one mf or other swear word. Yep Al is a wordsmith!

    • Christin says:

He is a wordsmith. To come up with both a parody concept and all the revised lyrics is probably tougher than it seems.

  22. Murphy says:

    Love Him.
In a polite fan-girl way, not in an offensive man stealer way.

  23. insomniac says:

Really, really great to see his success after all this time. Either he’s a heck of an actor or he’s just a genuinely good guy, and I think it’s the latter.

And whatever diet he’s following? It’s totally working for him. I’ve been listening to his stuff since the 80s, and unlike just about every other musician I listened to back then, he barely looks any older.

  24. Renee says:

How is it that Weird Al parodied Michael Jackson, Prince, and James Brown and dressed up as them in his videos and never once resorted to donning black face???? Please give the man all of the vegan cupcakes and pies in the world.

  25. Lisa says:

I love Weird Al. I never got a jerky vibe from him, even with his image. You could always tell there was a cool guy underneath all of it. My brother has been to a few of his concerts, and he said they’re a lot of fun.

  26. mkyarwood says:

How CUTE is that family photo!? I believe he doesn’t do drugs based on his good skin and hair alone. I have always loved him and will continue to do so!

  27. Jane says:

Can’t believe it was 13 years ago I was seated next to him at a wedding dinner, I remember because I was pregnant. I had no idea who he was. He was with his girlfriend “a lingerie model”, who looked really uncomfortable. He was so quiet, spoke so softly I would never have known, if someone hadn’t told me. Glad he found someone to marry!

  28. Gen says:

I love his hair, because my hubby’s hair is just like that! People want him to cut it, too. But I don’t. And he doesn’t. What’s wrong with it? It’s awesome!

  29. zbornak syndrome says:

This man doesn’t age it seems, he looks the same as 20 years ago!

  30. Trek Girl says:

I think it’s great that he hasn’t done drugs recreationally.

It just goes to show that you can create and be funny and wacky without doing drugs.

It’s unfortunate that many people are under the impression that drugs are de rigueur or necessary to be a good artist. It’s just not true.

  31. Elee says:

You want to chop off his hair?!? But it looks so healthy and shiny!

  32. Emily C. says:

He is hot. A good guy (which I’ve always known about him) + smart + he makes me laugh. If a guy doesn’t make me laugh, he doesn’t do a thing for me.

  33. janetdr says:

Diet for a New America is the book that took me to a plant based diet also. Excellent book.

  34. Duchess of Corolla says:

I think my family would hit it off well with the Yankovics. I have been a fan forever, and it’s great that he seems so down to earth. Hats off to him!

  35. Amy Tennant says:

She’s a lucky lady. 🙂 Sounds like he’s a lucky guy, too. I love Al.
