Lady Gaga & her French bulldog Asia cover Harper’s Bazaar: cute or tired?

gaga cover

Lady Gaga covers the September issue of Harper’s Bazaar (US). I guess subscribers might get one of the alternate covers, which might feature Penelope Cruz or Linda Evangelista. My take: they should have given all the covers to Linda, who is badass and truly an “icon.” That’s the theme of the September issue – “Icons.” And they put Gaga on the cover to represent that. Seriously. Why not Linda? As for the shoot… I’m just grateful that Gaga is mostly clothed. A few years ago, she was doing too many photoshoots nearly naked. She’s wearing Chanel in the cover shot, and that’s her little dog Asia in the purse. The interview was conducted by Karl Lagerfeld who, hilariously, seemed extremely bored with Gaga. You can read it here. The only interesting part is when Karl is talking about Choupette:

KARL LAGERFELD: Since my Choupette is the most famous cat on the Internet, and your [French bulldog] Asia is the most famous dog on the Internet, should they meet? Does Asia have a personal maid like Choupette does?
LADY GAGA:
They most certainly must meet! Asia is very sweet and calm. She would be very gentle with Choupette. She does not have a personal maid yet, but I adore making her little presents and cooking her homemade puppy food.

KL: Choupette talks without words; she communicates with me through her eyes. How does Asia communicate with you?
LG:
Asia and I have a very special bond. She also talks a lot with her big, beautiful eyes. Her ears are especially large for a Frenchie, and I can tell she’s comfy at home with Mommy because her ears are down. Asia also loves belly rubs, from everyone, and she lies on her back all the time to let me know!

KL: Choupette is my muse. Is Asia your musical inspiration?
LG:
Asia is my inspiration for many things. She has really shown me the importance of living in the moment. If I don’t, I’ll miss a precious look on her face! She is a very romantic and loving animal, and this sort of poetry is what art is all about, I think. Interaction. She loves to sit with me when I record jazz. She never barks or makes noise; she just looks at me with her big ears.

KL: I think animals are better muses than human beings—they’ll never fall out of fashion. What do you think of animals?
LG:
I love animals. They communicate with us entirely with love, something we all should do. Asia and my love will never be out of fashion—it is unconditional.

[From Harper’s Bazaar]

Do you think Asia is really the most famous dog on the internet? Or are we saying she’s the most famous French bulldog? I love French bulldogs – they are like the only “small dogs” I would ever consider having as a pet, because I usually only like big dogs. Frenchies are like the dog version of frogs (and I love frogs). As for Choupette… she is the Queen. Of everything!

    I can’t.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

      LOL. I totally understand.

      • Gea says:

I have hard time understanding artistically …Who Lady Gaga really is? In the begining she was kind of interesting, but her over the topupstaging herself every time to point of no return is becoming boring. I have saw her performing live before she become all that and she was really good.

  2. Nicolette says:

Is she still considered an icon? I thought she was over. And those nails are simply awful. Cute doggie though.

  3. Kiddo says:

Her answers were meh. But I am loving the crazy Karl part of the questioning. He is Taylor Swift, because he really didn’t care what Gaga had to say, he just wanted to talk about his cat.

  4. INeedANap says:

Kunty Karl only did this interview to talk about Choupette, and I approve. Yay Choupette!

  5. mia girl says:

    Extremely tired.

  6. TheOriginalKitten says:

    “I love wearing animals”

    There. Fixed it for ya.

  7. hutter says:

    Zzzz…

  8. eliza says:

The doggie is adorbs! What happened to her little fluffy reddish dog she dragged through Europe a few years ago? I hope she is not one of those ahole celebs like Bieber, who just buy at the moment then pass the animal off on someone else when it loses it’s “cute”.

  9. Sabrine says:

How could it be tired with an adorable doggie on the cover?

  10. Veronica Knowles says:

I think Karl was shading Gaga in some cat-lover vs. dog person way. Did anyone pick up on that?

I looooove Linda E. She really is in a class with very few peers.

  11. Jenny12 says:

I cannot believe anyone would give space to these two nutjobs, much less air. And I *love* animals. Personal maid for a cat??

    • eliza says:

Trust me, if I could afford a personal maid for my pets like Lagerfeld can, I would. Not even joking.

  12. eliza says:

Oops, can’t edit my other post. Her other dog was named Fozzie and I see no mention of Fozzie any longer. Did she ditch him?

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

Perhaps she had Fozzie fashioned into a lovely stole.

No, I actually think Fozzie wasn’t her dog right? The dog belonged to her assistant or something?

Gah! I hate myself for knowing that.

      • eliza says:

Oh. I had no idea. She dragged that poor dog through Europe during her tour and I remember seeing her posed in Versace bedding in some magazine and them saying it was her dog. I guess Fozzie was for photo ops and was returned to the assistant after she got all the attention from the dog she needed that day. Lol .

  13. Sarah says:

Kaiser what are you doing?why are we seeing pictures of Gaga(snooze)instead of Choupette?!

  14. Hissyfit says:

    What’s up with those eyebrows?

  15. Yup, Me says:

I look at those pictures and all I can think is- some poor Indian woman cut off all of her gorgeous hair and sold it to the hair industry so Gaga could do that with it. Mad Mad world.

  16. Mylene - Montreal says:

    Cute

  17. Mela says:

Her dog is freaking adorable, but that’s all I got. She looks boring and not cover-worthy, but that interview was hilarious.

  18. kri says:

Asia is striking on that cover. Classic in black, hanging back a bit..giving us dog smize to the max. Oh, and Gaga has clothes on.

  19. D says:

How would Lagerfeld react if he was told that Choupette is not the most famous cat on the internet…The most famous cats on the internet are probably Grumpy cat or Maru ( I know too much about internet cats…don’t judge…please 😉 lol )

  20. Laura says:

I only clicked to see the dog.

  21. Jh says:

Those pictures/wigs/clothes are so ugly. I don’t get it at all.

  22. TheOneandOnlyOnly says:

Can we please have fashion models on covers: we have all seen enough of this famewhoring clown. You have to look a bit but there are still decent models out there; None of these covers will be collectibles in the way fashion mag covers of the big 80s and supermodel 90s covers.

    • mystified says:

      +700 trillion!

So sick of “personalities” on fashion mags. Professional models like Linda Evangelista heck even Janice Dickinson would make me more likely to buy a fashion mag than cover celebs.

  23. Talie says:

I seriously thought you guys made up part of this interview as a JOKE! I can’t believe this is serious… OMG!

  24. Chickie Baby says:

As the owner of two Frenchies, I can guarantee that they are always adorable! They start out cute and retain their cuteness throughout life—the cute never stops. Asia is pretty little pup, and deserves to be on the Bazaar cover.

  25. adrien says:

They should have given all the covers to Asia. She’s a pretty dog. As for Lady Gaga, she does not excite me anymore. Really sad. I’d rather see more of her than Katy or Iggy.

  26. Alexa says:

I’m loving these pics – especially loving the fishnets and the nails. (I NEED that big, white, sweater-y jacket she’s wearing with the white fishnets.) Sorry to be contrary, but LG isn’t over for me. If nothing else, I always look forward to seeing what she’s going to dress up in next.

  27. katy says:

Frenchie’s are the only little dog I would consider getting, too. I was a dog groomer for a long time and they were by far my favorite small dog – so much personality and humor crammed into a little body!

Also – CHOUPETTE! I love hearing about her! Screw Lady Gaga, Karl should have just interviewed Choupette for this – it would have been more interesting.

  28. Xoxo says:

This website may loathe Gaga but she changed up the music game. Face facts. An icon? Yes.

  29. Anotherdirtymartini says:

Ways to improve this cover – 1) remove the Gaga mess, 2) zoom in on the adorable bulldog. Perfection

  30. Dean Ween McDermott says:

Tired, worn out, done, battered and fried.
GO away GAGA, cliche piece of ess ayche eye tit.

    Karl ok.

  31. Bread and Circuses says:

I’m not liking the pink outfit. At all. But I kinda love the other two looks.

I admit, though, I have a rather high tolerance for Gaga shenanigans. I’m not going to read her interview, however, because that’s usually when I hit my limit.

  32. moo says:

she’s just way too desperate and getting very ugly (not physically, just her antics are getting ugly). tired, tired, tired.

  33. That article. I can’t even. Karl is clearly insane. It was like they were trying to one up each other in the “who loves their pets more” game. What was that? This is journalism now?

I usually despise Chanel, but I want that bag.

As for dogs, I love my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. They’re the best dogs. And I’m a British history nerd so it makes sense (they’re featured in many royal paintings. Queen Victoria owned one named Dash). I’ve never been a French Bulldog person myself. It feels very weird that they’re the trendy dog of the moment. But if anyone does have one and is in Paris (the most unfriendly dog city) there’s a French Bulldog cafe that allows you to bring yours. I think they only allow French bulldogs :/ but they don’t even allow dogs in the parks so being able to take your dog anywhere is a rarity.

  34. Ally8 says:

File this one under: how can we miss you if you never go away?

Seriously, I wish I could set a filter on my Web browser, so I never have too see certain celebrity faces again.

  35. Lux says:

That cover is hilarious. I don’t even know what to say, the whole thing is just so ridiculous.

  36. mazomazohyst says:

Nothing about this woman is ever actually sexy or avantgarde. Only sad and bizarre. :/

That dog is hella cute though.

  37. Elj says:

“I love animals. They communicate with us entirely with love, something we all should do.”

This from the woman who two years ago faced a huge backlash when she defended her wearing of fur. Hypocritical, predictable woman. Just go away now. And take Madonna with you.

  38. Amy says:

Most famous dog on the Internet is most definitely Boo (and his companion Buddy). Usually the most famous animals have non-famous owners. In fact Boo’s owner is anonymous since she ‘d rather have the attention on Boo and not her. When I think of famous cats, I never remember Choupette. Maru’s owner is also anonymous.

  39. Josefa says:

The most insufferable man in fashion interviews the most insufferable woman in music, and yet the result is somewhat awesome all because of animals. How can anybody not love these creatures.
