Interview Mag’s September issue has six amazing covers: which is your favorite?

IM6

Interview Magazine’s September Issue is actually pretty interesting. The magazine chose to do “The Photographers Issue” and release six amazing covers with six different subjects, photographed by six different photographers. The covers feature Nicole Kidman, Naomi Campbell, Lea Seydoux, Daria Werbowy, Keira Knightley and Amber Valletta. Here’s more:

Steven Klein selected Nicole Kidman, Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott picked Naomi Campbell, Patrick Demarchelier chose Keira Knightley, Craig McDean tapped Amber Valletta, Peter Lindbergh selected Léa Seydoux and Mikael Jansson photographed Daria Werbowy.

“It was like doing six cover shoots,” said Interview editor in chief Keith Pollock, who noted that different copies of the September issue would feature one of the six covers. “There were no restrictions. There was a lot of travel. We shot in Sweden, Ibiza, London, Paris, New York. No photographer was in the same place.”

Inside the issue, each muse interviewed the photographer on their vision, except in the case of Alas and Piggott, who were interviewed by Riccardo Tisci.

“I think that themed issues are very ambitious. It can be such a huge risk,” Pollock noted. “But it was really wonderful, and there were moments when I thought this was going to tank, but we really pulled it off.”

Do you have a favorite? The only one I had to crop was Naomi’s cover, because it was rather titsy. I like Naomi’s cover because it feels like a throw-back, but on the other side, it also feels like it’s totally been done before. I think my favorites are Keira by Demarkchelier (that’s just a striking photo in general) and Lea by Lindbergh, although if you hadn’t told me that was Lea, I would have thought she was Kate Moss. My least favorite? Nicole Kidman by Steven Klein. That cover just has a weird vibe. And it’s too dark.

  1. WTF says:

Naomi Campbell is the baddest b*tch. That is all.

  2. bns says:

Daria! I love her. One of the best models ever (and no she’s not a 90s super – get over it).

    • Aura says:

Daria is going out with a friend of mine, they live in a tiny little house in the wilds of rural Ireland, and she is LOVELY.

      • Cheryl Tunt says:

No way! That’s romantic. Is the bf Irish?

      • TheOneandOnlyOnly says:

A new York mag had an article recently on Daria’s move to Ireland; But I have to go with Naomi – I, like many on this site and others, still have a spot for 90s supers.

      • Talie says:

Small world! I remember reading in Vogue that she took off for Ireland for love. So happy for her.

    • Vizia says:

Daria for the win. Not only has she always been one of my favorites, I love how stripped-down this shot it–no ‘shopping, no T&A, no pretense, just her beautiful face with a few wrinkles showing…

    • Chris says:

      Now now, no fighting!
Daria here too, I like her a lot.
Naomi of course is beyond human assessment, she’s a goddess, so one leaves her out. Amber looks good in this shot, she’s done some work recently which did her no favours at all (M&S, I think)
I spend a lot of time over in Cork, and have been keeping my eyes peeled for Daria!

  3. Sharra55 says:

Nicole Kidman looks like a corpse.

  4. FingerBinger says:

Lea Seydoux and Naomi Campbell are stunning.

  5. eliza says:

Keira gets my vote. Love Keira!

  6. Talie says:

    Naomi and Amber — LOVE

  7. mimi says:

My favorite cover is Keira Knightley’s.

  8. Jaderu says:

I’ve always been enamored with Daria but I kinda dig Kiera’s the most.

  9. BengalCat2000 says:

Amber! She always reminds me of Carole Lombard. Love her!!!

    • Chinoiserie says:

Now that you said it I do think she resembles Carole. And her cover looks nice.

My favorite is Keira’s and Nicole’s the least favorite. And it bothers me that it does not look similar to other covers, I like symmetry.

    • Eleonor says:

that’s the most interesting cover for sure.

    • Esmom says:

She’s always been one of my favorites so I have to go with her. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a shot quite like it either. She looks beautiful as always but also a bit menacing, it’s kind of unsettling.

    • Chris says:

She reminds me of Marlene Dietrich here…

  10. QQ says:

    Naomi hands down

Then Léa cause she has an amazing face (omg Blue is the Warmest Color was insane!)

    Then Amber

Nicole looks like a mannequin that just toppled over

  11. bella says:

i thought lea was kate moss.
i’ll cast my vote for amber.
her recent presentation on her sobriety was incredibly brave.
i just LOVE her, anyway…with or without this admission.
she just seems to have a lovely soul…

  12. Claudia says:

    Keira! Striking picture.

I thought that was Kate Moss as well…(younger & healthier looking at second glance though).

The Kidman cover looks slightly creepy.

  13. Kiddo says:

Daria Werbowy. I’m getting a Dorothea Lange vibe with the straight forward, stark, almost glamor-less portrait, that still remains stunningly beautiful. Followed by Amber Valletta, since it clearly advertises that it is an illustration, which most cover ‘photos’ are these days with the amount of photoshop work, but here it is played with and obvious, like a designer’s sketch. I get that they wanted to go ‘pulp’ for Nicole Kidman, but it somehow fails to hit that mark. I think it’s too busy in composition or color or both. The Naomi Campbell shot is gorgeous, but I feel that we’ve seen her like this before, so it falls a little short. The other two don’t really interest me, for no particular reason.

    • siri says:

Same here. Daria Werbowy’s picture is stunningly ‘present’ , no artificial pose, no glamor. Just really ‘earthy’, and therefore beautiful. The Valletta pic is a smart idea, but I don’t like the look on her face. Naomi almost always looks like that (nevertheless beautiful), and whatever idea was behind the Kidman photo, it fails to deliver. The other two don’t catch my attention.

      • Kiddo says:

I think the look on her face is intended to match the tough as nails menswear thingy, so I like it. At least she’s not duck-mouthing or mouth breathing, it’s a decidedly strong expression that translates a feeling of command and control.

  14. tabasco says:

i also thought lea was kate moss.

amber for the win! she does the vaguely menswear-ish thing really well and i love the mad men-esque outline treatment on the photo.

  15. K.B. says:

Naomi. Always Naomi. I know her personality can be abhorrent, but she’s busted her butt to get to where she is, and she’s not one of these moronic celebutantes that are shoved in our faces nowadays.

Keira’s my girl crush, but the drowned rat look is not a good look for her.

  16. Gine says:

I really like all of these except Nicole’s–that one just looks out of place. And I wish Lea’s had a little more contrast. She’s gorgeous and it’s a striking picture, but all the gray tones look a little flat.

  17. Cheryl Tunt says:

Léa Seydoux’s cover is my favourite! Then Amber, Daria and Naomi Campbell in that order. Not really into Nicole Kidman’s or Keira Knightley’s even though KK is beautiful I just think (comparing the young actor covers) that Lea Seydoux’s pic just blows her out of the water, it’s so simple but so stunning, she has something about her that makes her so intriguing, she’s a star

  18. Jenna says:

Wait a second – did they actually try to turn Nicole into freaking BUFFY?

Blond hair short by the shoulders (curly too, but that’s a small issue), cross on chain showing – looking darn like the same simple silver cross Buffy was given by Angel (yes, I’m a nerd, I know), leather jacket, being ‘bitten’ by a man on the neck while she is on the ground?

As much as I will freely admit to loving the show when it was on, what in the name of frilly panties does Nicole Freaking Kidman have to do with a teenage vampire slayer? It’s bad enough they cast her as a 20/30 something Princess Grace, but now a throw back to a TEENAGER?

    • kri says:

LMAO @Buffy. Lea and Naomi are my faves. Amber looks exactly like Jude Law in light drag. Which is kind of cool. Am I the only one who sees it?

  19. Josefa says:

Nicole looks plastic (what a shock). Kiera’s is my favorite, her smize puts Tyra to shame. Amber pulls out the Dietrich’y look great. The other 3 are very good but rather generic.

  20. tabasco says:

p.s. i’d quite like to see the full naomi cover. i’m pretty sure we can handle titsy.

  21. LAK says:

Naomi Campbell is such an amazing beauty. Look at that bone structure!! Sigh.

  22. Linn says:

Léa’s and Keira’s pictures are my favorites and I like the photo of Amber as well.
The picture of Daria is really unflattering and makes her look a lot older than 30.

  23. Hausfrau says:

I was like “is that Kate Winslet? Or Jude Law? They’ve been photoshopped to hell and back!” And then it was Amber Valetta….*heads to optometrist*..

  24. mayamae says:

The photo of Daria reminds me of old B&W depression-era pictures. Particularly the one in which a woman is surrounded by her many children. Although she must be young because her children are very small, she looks decades older and wears an expression of sheer worn out misery.

I blame the photographer for Nicole’s bad picture. She’s been frozen for years – everyone knows it – yet he chose her. It’s also a stupid pose with no eye contact.

  25. Naddie says:

    Keira and Léa.

  26. stacat1 says:

    Amber

  27. Lola says:

None. For some reason, I feel like I have seen all of them before…

  28. Triple Cardinal says:

I looked at Nicole’s photo and thought she was in a clench with Jason Bateman…who just happens to be her current co-star. It’s not him, but it sure looks like him.

And I agree: she looks like she’s embalmed.

  29. aurelia says:

Daria looks like she has ciggy face. Dehydrated. Keira looks the best.

  30. Ice Queen says:

    Naomi and Kiera

  31. Bob Loblaw says:

I like the Nicole one. The others are all the same shot, they’re all head shots, 4 in the same black and white, and not that visually interesting. I like the Film Noir feel of Nicole’s image and the two dominant colors of pink and blue.

  32. kitty-bye says:

    Kiera wins.
Naomi second mainly because her fists look uncomfortable or don’t look that alluring.
