Dr. Oz on Octomom: “Selfishly delusional”

Octuplet mom Nadya Suleman’s father, Ed Doud, was on Oprah yesterday. The guy was really subdued and a little boring and he made excuses for his daughter throughout. You could see how he enabled her to have so many children just as he insisted that he kept telling her not to do it. Ed admitted he spoiled Nadya rotten as a child, and he seems to have continued that into her adulthood.

Nadya was invited on Oprah contrary to her statements that she would have welcomed the chance
Doud was invited on Oprah after he contacted producers. Contrary to what Nadya said about wanting to go on Oprah, she was indeed invited according to the talk show queen, who said “My team had been asking to do an interview with her.” I bet they weren’t paying enough.

Likens Today interview to kidnapping, said Nadya was still drugged up at the time
Nadya’s father said it wasn’t a kidnapping per se when he daughter was interviewed by Ann Curry, but he sure described it like one. “They took her out of the hospital by midnight to a secret location. They did not even give her a chance to rest, to sleep, where she’s still under medication and not feeling well.” [via US Weekly]

On how he found out his daughter was pregnant with so many babies
Doud described how he heard that his daughter was pregnant with what was thought to be seven babies. His ex-wife called him up while he was working in Iraq to say that Nadya was pregnant and in the hospital. He then decided to come back. He called the fact that Nadya had eight healthy babies a “gift from God.”

As for whether he was ok with Nadya getting pregnant all those times, he said he was ok with “maybe one or two” and called more than that “irresponsible.” He said he had a talk with Nadya about how expensive it was to raise children back when she just had two.

Doud has just $100 in the back
Ed Doud said he had $100 in the bank and could only stay for one or two weeks before he had to go back to work in Iraq. He got choked up when he said “do I really want to be 10,000 miles away from my grandchildren that I love?”

On telling Nadya’s doctor that he was putting a burden on their family
Ed said he answered the phone once when the IVF doctor called for Nadya, only to find out that his daughter was pregnant for the fourth time. It turned out to be twins. Ed told the doctor that he was putting an enormous strain on the family by allowing Nadya to get pregnant again, and the doctor kept saying “I did not know, I did not understand. I’m sorry” The doctor’s excuse was that Natalie was very intelligent and educated. He went on to enable her to get pregnant twice more.

Nadya always promised “no more” after each child
Ed said he “always” had a conversation with Nadya about her level of responsibility in continuing to have children, but that she said “she knows what she’s doing, she loves the children, she wants more, but ‘this is it, no more.’ Always. Every time this happened, ‘that’s it, no more.'”

On the babies being given by God
As for whether they need help, he said they do, and “do not punish my daughter for what she had done. Do not punish the babies because they were given by God.”

“If God did not want this to happen, he could have destroyed these embryos when they implanted in her before they were successfully born.”

Oprah asked “Doesn’t God give people choices?”

The audience applauded and Ed said “absolutely.”

Oprah said “She chose to go to a doctor and get these babies implanted. And she chose to have six implanted. She made that choice, and now that the babies have come, everyone says ‘Well it’s God’s will.”

Ed answered “It is God’s will. If God did not want these babies to survive – that’s God.”

Oprah pressed “Was it God’s will for her to make that choice,” and Ed said “Yes. It is religious. She has embryos, frozen embryos. To her, these are her babies.”

Dr. Oz calls Nadya “selfishly delusional,” says children face health problems
Dr. Oz came on and was very animated. He said that “ultimately this is a form of cruelty [to the children]”

He also said that Nadya was “a very bright woman, but selfishly delusional.

“There is a relatively small chance that all eight of those kids will grow up to be normal adults. There’s going to be a chance of cerebral palsy, developmental delays, emotionally, mentally, vision problems, hearing problems. These kids would fit into my palm. To think that they would be able to grow normally despite being in the hospital and getting all this care they’ve got is unlikely.”

“This is a major failure in professionalism. What the physician did… was not fair. When you put six embryos in a patient you now have seven patients… you risk those lives by implanting them all at the same time.”

I really liked what Dr. Oz said about Nadya after a woman chimed in from Washington via Skype to defend her.

“The reason I think folks are nervous and anxious about this situation is they want to help the kids, but to help the kids you’ve got to go through the mom, and you’re not sure you trust the mom.

“If I send $100 to mom right now is that going to go off for a pedicure or to help the child?”

Ed raised his hand and said “Send it to me.”

the TODAY show said they did not trick Nadya
whatever.. Ann Curry did that first interview I heard Nadya Picked Ann because Ann does all the interviews with Angleina Jolie.
the hospital says they will not release any of the babies untill she can prove she got house to bring them too
The grandfather says he got $100 in his bank account and the neighbors are shooting at the paps that are in the neighborhood stalking Nayda

  2. Scooter says:

On a side note, I strolled through the room while my mom was watching Oprah and she was going on about how pretty she thought Nadya was. I think my mom must have been on glue or something.

  3. Chiara says:

“Snarl and growl,” Nadya sits and counts her money, and the PR firm who keeps her as the angry victim collects 10%.

  4. Rio says:

I dunno, aside from the HIDEOUS duck lips, Nadya’s rather pretty in my opinion. I love her hair. Everything else about her…not so much.

  5. karamelatte says:

“God’s will”? Didn’t God notice how delusional and unsuitable to be a mother she was and blow out her fallopian tubes?!!

Seriously though, IVF is for giving loving parents (note the “S”) a chance of a child, not for fulfilling some crazy woman’s desire to bread a lacrosse team. Obviously we shouldn’t demonise single mothers, but Nadya Suleman is one of the reasons they get such a hard time in the media, portrayed as feckless welfare spongers. I would love for someone to ask her how she squares deliberately denying her kids a Daddy with all the whining about not having siblings as a kid…

  6. manda says:

    @ scooter: hilarious!

  7. Giz says:

I agree with Oprah (which doesn’t happen too often) that God did give her a choice. People need to get off of this “It’s God’s will bandwagon and see things for how they really are. Apparently, free-will only enters the picture when you’ve murdered the wrong person. What a bunch of hypocrites!

While it has been God’s will for the children to live, he did not declare the mother as Holy Mother of the Womb.
I really don’t know who makes me more sick, the mother, the family or those who have made excuses for a spoiled brat’s behavior. Then turning it into a religous and moral issue.

The whole thing makes me sick. I feel sorry for the children, not Nadya, not her parents. The children hsve turned into a money making ploy for all concerned. It’s REALLY not about money to support the children. This woman has finally gotten the attention she has always wanted at the expense of the children. And Nadya says: So be it.

  8. Eileen Yover says:

    Rio:
Glad you think she’s pretty, she’s paid enough to look like that….while her parents pay to raise her kids and thier special needs education, food, housing…..
Meanwhile we see her at Nordstrom’s, Starbucks, and the bank constantly with 14 kids to plan and save for and her parents loose thier home, which she says she’s not responible for.

  9. Lisa says:

She sure is out and about a lot for a mother of all these kids.
God’s will? Give me a break, it was a CHOICE.

  10. Rio says:

    Eileen:
I was stating a personal opinion, no need to get snitty with me. Yes, I think she’s pretty, but that doesn’t mean I approve of anything the woman’s done. As a taxpayer I’m paying for those kids, the surgeries, the Starbucks and the hospital bills, too. Frankly I think the woman is a disgrace to mothers everywhere and should have given psych treatment many, many years ago– but I still think she has nice hair.
And that’s all I’m going to say on THAT subject 🙂

  11. Aleksa says:

Meanwhile, my husband and I are going though hellish in-vitros in order to have just 1 child! (we would love to adopt, but in my country it´s discouragingly complicated). Also, they limit the embryo implant to 2 at a time to minimise multiple births. If I told my doctor that I wanted to get all my frozen embryos implanted at once, no way he would allow it! Where was the doctor´s common sense??

  12. what is ever. says:

Too many “religious” people use God’s will as their excuse for being absolute losers in life. How about this helpful mantra, God helps those who help themselves. Don’t confuse man’s inability to overcome sin with man’s ability to be rationalize laziness.

God’s will is for you to make correct choices, not to stop making them altogether because you have no control over “God’s plan for you” …give me a break.

  13. what is ever. says:

    *to rationalize laziness

    (sigh)

  14. cara says:

Wow…Aleska, I am so sorry to hear that it’s hard to adopt in your country. I feel that it would be a blessing for people to adopt, without the notion of geting a perfect kid. Genetics are very real, and things such as lying and such can be inherant. But, kids that are unloved grow up into angry adults and that has very real consequences for us as a whole.

I hope you guys give it another shot with adopting, especially siblings, and as in many cases that I’ve heard of this happening, you may get pregant on your own. (very true..I’m adopted and like they say, a moth to a flame, have encountered many, MANY adoptees and their parents and have heard things like that happening too many times to count)

And I refuse to watch Oprah. I think she’s awful and her BS meter is askew.

  15. Jenn says:

Why is the doctor not questioned on his actions??? He’s the professional is he not?? She didn’t do this all by herself.

  16. Bren says:

So Hitler’s choices were God’s will? Tim McVeigh’s choices were God’s will?

  17. Persistent Cat says:

    @ Scooter – very funny.

  18. cara says:

@Bren….the difference beween humans and all the other species is we have “free will”. Everyone of us have the decision to act in a negative or positive way at every waking moment.

I feel that the actions which we choose are not God’s but it’s what we learn and how we handle them that are guided by whom/whatever you may call the creator.

  19. Lizzie says:

“I distrust those people who know so well what God wants them to do because I notice it always coincides with their own desires.”
    – Susan B. Anthony

Perfect quote for this whole “God’s will” excuse.

  20. the original kate says:

i’ll donate money to have this nutbar sterilized, cause you know she isn’t done yet.

  21. CDP says:

Why is no one asking how she paid to have her face rearranged?! Since she is living on foodstamps and gov’t assistance how can she afford plastic surgery. Why are journalist/reporters finding out more about that!?

She is a selfish woman…and her true colors are starting to show. Im amazed how fast she is booking interview after interview and appearing on Dr. Phil etc etc…shes trying to get the most cash she can out of her 15 minutes of fame.

  22. Holly says:

Excellent quote Lizzie, I should save that one.

  23. Melanie says:

    Who is Natalie?

  24. Beth says:

What a selfish woman. Well, seeing she says it is God’s will then she should count on God to send money out of that over productive womb of hers…(or there abouts).

  25. Anonymous says:

Has anyone ever thought to investigate this entire family. I saw the Oprah interview, and Ed Doud said he did not want to say where he was working, but it was overseas as a “linguist”, and he acted very surprised when Oprah mentioned Food Stamps, and his response was that he didn’t know what Food Stamps were. I know many Assyrians that are working for or trying to get jobs with the US Government in Iraq as interpreters, and get paid up to $250,000 a year, could be even more. Also, there is no way that “Ed” does not know what food stamps are. Food stamps are everywhere, and many Assryrians in California are store owners, and I am sure that food stamps have been a topic of conversation at some point. Also, I have heard stories of people “divorcing” their spouses in order to separately collect government assistance. Welfare fraud! Here in Detroit we often talk about people having babies just to get more assistance, the more babies you have, the more money the government gives you. Especially if you have a “disability” like a back injury that is often hard to prove if someone is faking. Throw in a few kids with disabilities, and that adds more money to the pile. As I watched the Oprah show, I kept thinking that this guy seems to have rehearsed all of his comments, and he basically said everything that we already heard or read, so what was the reason for him going on Oprah, oh yes, money. I really don’t think that this family wanted all of this attention, I believe they thought they would go undetected, and be able to collect all of this government assistance with all of the steps they have already taken, the “divorce” of Nadya’s parents, Nadya’s mom collecting welfare for herself, and saying that she takes care of Nadya and her kids because her daughter is disabled, which would add more to her amount, the father would continue to work overseas and collect a huge paycheck, and Nadya would collect for her and her kids, with the extra money for the disabilites. Having a few more kids is probably what she was aiming for to collect a little extra money, but plans got messsed up with eight being born, and now everyone in the world knows about them. Maybe a deeper look into this family may be a good idea. Another thing, Nadya and her father say that God wanted this, and that these embryos are human beings. My religious belief is that yes, the embryos are human beings, but, God did not intend for people to have babies this way. When you choose IVF, you are basically doing God’s work, and that is wrong.

  26. bros says:

probably one of her many aliases. this whole family is from the twighlight zone. father mother and daughter are seriously from outerspace. the parents are clearly insane enablers with lobotomies. what kid of dad rushes back from iraq when his thirty-something daughter gets pregnant? dude, she is a grown ass woman-that kind of behavior is exactly what contributes to making a monster like nadya, natalie, nora, whatever. and then the mom raising the babies, losing her house, being bankrupt. what the HELL are they thinking with this daughter of theirs? shes never had to deal with one iota of responsibility or reality because her parents have clearly been wiping her ass every second of her life and keeping her wrapped up in this cocoon world of alternate-reality. this whole alien freakish family needs to go be put on an island to live alone with their particular brand of crazy and dysfunctional loony activities.

  27. jennifurrr says:

i have a friend who went to med school and he said that one of his professors of fertility is the octo-doctor!! and that the dude was off when he knew him as a teacher!

  28. Bren says:

Cara – my point also. It was not God’s will that she had these children nor was it God’s will that Hitler etc. destroy lives. It is called personal responsability

  29. yasmin says:

@ Cara – “the difference beween humans and all the other species is we have “free will”. Everyone of us have the decision to act in a negative or positive way at every waking moment.”

Are you serious? you think animals don’t have free-will? Sorry but that’s really ignorant. The difference between humans and all other species is really anatomy and lifestyle. Animals don’t have the same brain capacity as us but that doesn’t mean they don’t have free will.

  30. Trillion says:

God’s will? Technology is outpacing superstition at an ever rapid rate. Maybe if there’s one positive outcome from all this dialogue, it will be the “outing” of the taboo notion that nobody knows what God’s will is. It’s just a catch-all phrase to “explain” things that are difficult to understand. It was once used to describe why the sky darkens at night and now it’s used to describe why people have 8 frozen embryos implanted in their uteruses.

  31. Rreedy says:

We should all be re-thinking reproductive rights. This is ridiculous!!

  32. Feebee says:

I think Dr Oz made some good statements. Without wanting to get in to the religious debate too much, as I’m growing more and more cynical of the whole “God” thing as I get older but as I remember from my youth in Religious Ed classes, God’s ultimate gift to “Man” was that of free will. So to say it’s god’s will isn’t correct, he handed that to us and really 90% of what happens can be then explained by science… the other 10%… well that’s why I haven’t totally given up on God.

  33. RaraAvis says:

I think the state of California should sue her doctor for the cost of her food stamps and other welfare aid.

  34. Kat says:

“Nadya always promised “no more” after each child”
“but that she said “she knows what she’s doing, she loves the children, she wants more, but ‘this is it, no more.’ Always. Every time this happened, ‘that’s it, no more.’”

Hey Grandpa, I think it is time to stop believing her !!! Face it, she is addicted to being pregnant. Just wait until the kiddies are no longer cute and cuddly. I’m sure that old feeling of being preggers will come, and out Nadya will go to find that special doctor, to do the deed again.

  35. Aleksa says:

    @ Cara:
Thanks for your good wishes! My husband and I would totally adopt siblings, and even a disabled child as long as he or she could be independent, because we would want them to be OK after we´re gone…but like I said, in my country, you have to pay a fortune to adopt, and this would be better spent on the child´s care and education, so we will probably begin the process anyway, whether we have a biological child or not, but we don´t know if we will be able to afford it to the end, even with both of us working. I want to adopt because I was adopted myself, so to me it would be the right thing to do.

@Anonymous ranting about god´s work…well, what do YOU think I think? Exactly.

About the sentence “God´s will”…funny you are talking about that. I had a “philosophy attack” the other day, not uncommon in my brain at say 3 a.m., I start thinking with a sleepy brain and the ideas flow better because there´s less clutter. Anyway. I thought at a time like this, with my mum dead and me going through an in-vitro and not having an older woman in my family, it would be really nice to believe in a god or a higher power. Unfortunatelly for me, I am not a believer. I just don´t have the faith it takes, and I believe in science and also taking control and responsability for my actions. But this is not the point. I was wondering if the need for religion in the human psyche might be linked to a slight need to continue being parented” for life, as in “god´s “my father in heaven”, and also the lack of an ability to take one´s destiny in one´s hands: if something bad happens, it was his will, but if something good happens, I´ll take the credit if I can..
I say to each their own. It seems to me , however, that we “unbelievers” tend to be more tolerant of people who are religious and feel like they have a right to tell everyone else what to do…

  36. Reality Check says:

I know that it is God’s will to provide Octo-fraud with a nice jail cell for all the benefit and WC fraud she has committed. God will provide the taxpayer’s relief by keeping her in jail for fraud by keeping her away from IVF and plastic surgery physicians. God’s will will also allow those 14 children to be adopted by loving and good families who will not exploit these poor children born to someone whose greed and avarice has no bounds. I cannot believe she turned down the offer of round-the-clock care because they would not let her tape a reality show. She has shown her true colors. I sincerely hope she gets investigated by Workers’ Comp and the State for benefits fraud. Since WC benefits are tax-free, I wonder if she told the State welfare and SSI about this income.
