Jon Voight voted for Angelina on Oscar ballot, is thrilled w/ Winslet’s win

Remember that “sad” story about Angelina Jolie ignoring her father after the Golden Globes, and how most people just thought it was something made up, most likely by Voight? Well, it looks like there are no hard feelings from the fictional snub. Jon Voight announced that he filled out his Oscar ballot for Angelina, though he was thrilled with Kate Winslet’s Best Actress win.

Once you read what Voight said, it’s hard to find fault with him because it seems like he’s just being polite to all of the nominees. However, his interview is being billed as “Voight wanted Winslet to win, hates daughter”. Voight even says that Jolie predicted Winslet’s win to him, so maybe they’re talking now? What did that conversation sound like? Voight: “Can I see my grandkids?” Jolie: “Are you going to vote for me for Best Actress?” Voight: “If I say yes, will you at least let Princess Zahara call me?” Contact Music has more:

Veteran actor Jon Voight was delighted to see Kate Winslet scoop the Best Actress Oscar on Sunday (22Feb09) – beating his daughter Angelina Jolie to the podium.

Winslet scooped the honour for her portrayal of a Nazi guard in The Reader at the prestigious prizegiving – sixth time lucky for the star who had been a losing nominee five times before.

And Voight insists her long-awaited win was well-deserved – although it meant Jolie went home empty-handed.

He says, “It’s wonderful. I voted for Angie and all the gals deserve to be (winners)… (But Winslet) is a brilliant actress and she was brilliant in her performance.

“Kate’s a great person. She’s got her feet on the ground… and it must have been very moving for the people of Britain too.”

And even Jolie herself, who won the Best Supporting Oscar in 1999 for Girl, Interrupted, had predicted a victory for Winslet.

Voight adds, “It was Kate’s night, as Angie had said actually – she said she thought it was gonna be Kate’s night and it’s wonderful to see.

“Ange is a pro, she knows what’s going on, she’s been there before, she’s gotten the award before. She’s an experienced person and she knows that it can go any way. All of them have to be prepared… (even) Winslet said she was practising to look dignified if she lost.”

From Contact Music

Why didn’t Angelina think Meryl Streep had a chance? I was not-so-secretly rooting for Meryl! Oh my God, Angelina hates Meryl Streep! Or maybe not. Even though the Best Actor and Actress categories were heavily contested, I was utterly surprised that the early front-runners Penn and Winslet won both. I genuinely thought there would be a shake-up, and either Meryl or Mickey Rourke would end up with a prize. But apparently, in addition to her other talents, Angelina can correctly predict the Oscars. It’s as good a skill as knife-throwing.

He only voted for her to try to get back in her life I’m sure. We all know Winslet was the real winner in this run. Even though I secretly wanted Meryl to win.

  2. ohno says:

who gives a shit about this smug bitch

  3. Ash says:

    Jon Voight apparently, haha.

  4. Wonder Woman says:

    ohno:
    You…bc you commented

Are they still mad at each other? his son ( the one french kissing Angelina at the oscars) berated Jon for not giving him a new car on his 16 birthday when all the other spoiled beverly hills kids got a car on their 16th b-day Angleina’s mother let Angelina boyfriend/lover move in with them when Angelina was 14 years old.

  6. Feebee says:

Angie’s comment about Kate winning sounded like it could have come from an interview that Voight was quoting… then again maybe they are talking again.

Predicting Kate’s win, IMO, wasn’t exactly crystal ball gazing. Not for someone as involved in the Hollywood game as Jolie would be.

  7. geronimo says:

Why does he need to say he voted for her? Considering he’s her father, it’s seems a given that he would, regardless of whether or not he thought hers was the best performance (which, to be fair, it wasn’t.) Just seems an odd and unnecessary thing to blab about.

  8. Obvious says:

When did Zahara get demoted from Empress to plain old Princess? There are going to be serious repercussions here!

  9. sisi says:

There is an article at the ny post online about the smugness of angelina at the oscars…she needs to straighten up!

It’s sad that her father has to resort to kissing her butt with bs stories in public like this just to try and get to meet his grandchildren!

  11. geronimo says:

😆 @ Obvious. Maybe she’s been demoted because she failed to use her powers to secure Oscars for them….

  12. Kaiser says:

Obvious – I can’t believe I made that mistake! Empress, not Princess! *genuflecting*

  13. Codzilla says:

Her earrings look like something the crazy old lady down the street would wear with a flower-print muumuu.

  14. Michele says:

God, they both need to get over whatever transpired and caused the bad blood between them, as well as getting over themselves. Dragging this “family feud” out just makes all parties involved look like pathetic a-holes.

  15. Howie says:

Angie needs to get over this whole thing and talk to her damn dad. He seems so desperate for a relationship with her and his grandkids- it’s really sad. She’s such a cold bitch.

  16. daisy424 says:

From what I have read, it’s Jon that keeps their feud in the media.

    *lighting a candle for Kaiser*

Codzilla; I thought the same thing about her jewelry at first, they looked like jade to me. After seeing how the light reflected off of them later in the evening, I grew to like them. Diamonds are my gem of choice though…

  17. Ash says:

My favorite “smug” scene was when Timm Gunn snuck in “you look so great tonight both of you, I’m such a great fan” as they were walking into the Kodak Theater. The look on her face was smugtastic.

  18. Codzilla says:

Daisy: Yeah, I only watched about 30 minutes total of the ceremony, so my opinion is really only based on the pics. I’ll take your word for it, though, since I know absolutely nothing about jewelry. My (much beloved) wedding ring only cost $150!

  19. Anon says:

On her best day, she is nowhere near the caliber of actor as her father Jon Voight is. So sad that an actor as great as he is has to kiss his snot-nosed daughter’s ass all the time just to get her attention, as if she is the Queen of the World. Pitiful.

  20. Maritza says:

It’s time she forgive her old father and let him enjoy his grand kids. He seems to lover Angelina very much and I’m sure he would be a very loving grandfather too.

  21. daisy424 says:

Mine too! Plain brushed gold band from Service Merchandise, remember those? I would have lost an expensive ring in a paint can by now.
But I would love to wear, just once, the gorgeous jewelry I have seen the actresses wear to the Oscars in the past.

  22. Bina says:

I think she was wearing caubuchon (sp?) emeralds.

  23. Jess says:

Comment about hte jewelry.. I wasn’t a fan of all the green jewelry at the oscars. I was wondering why SO many people we wearing it, and it didn’t match what anyone was wearing.. but by the end of the night it had grown on me.

Also, maybe Angie has valid reasons for disliking her father so much. But she has enough respect to not let the reason leak to the world.. I dont know.. And I’m sure I never will..

  24. FFS says:

“On her best day, she is nowhere near the caliber of actor as her father Jon Voight is.”

    AMEN sister.

But she does have that smug thing down pat.

  25. Mairead says:

Why did I click on this link, I know it’s only fanning the attention-whore flames 😐 it’s our attention the old duffer wants and nobody elses.

But yay for Coddie and Daisy for swerving the conversation onto jewellery – now I don’t feel so bad. I’m not a diamonds person at all, and I do love emeralds – my fave celeb piece is the gorgeous ring Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty wears – oh so pretty. I liked AJ’s earring, they were statement pieces but weren’t vulgar. Just like clothes jewellery goes through fashion phases – emeralds must be “in” this year

I thought Amy Adam’s bib-necklace was divine though.

  26. Kaiser says:

Mairead: Oh noes! I *hated* Amy Adams’ necklace. Her dress was so pretty, she should have left her neck bare.

I think Angie was wearing cabachon emeralds too. And they really popped in a sea of too many diamond necklaces.

  27. heima says:

just today a read a quote from Zeffirelli who said that when Jon Voight was filming a movie with him Angelina was so affectionate to Jon and Jon really loved his child, and Zeffirelli asked himself why they are so distant now.

  28. Mairead says:

Good grief, I’ve not heard him being name-checked in quite a while – are we talking about the Zefferelli that had “boundary issues” with the young Bruce Robinson on the set of Romeo and Juliet?

Kaiser – I think the dress and jewels went together well on tv – but it didn’t work so well in flash photography.

Those emerald earrings really pop though – I wonder if they’re against a platinum backing to reflect the white light back through the facets?

  29. Bros says:

those earrings and ring were the shit-totally original and exotic looking. while i am a fan of diamonds, i think they get way too much play as jewelry, esp. at award season times and it is nice to see some stunning rocks that arent diamond. those were great-but i love quirky pieces-like that big silver necklace marisa tomei wore to sag? or independent spirit awards? cant remember.

  30. Mairead says:

*oops Zeffirelli even and who allegedly had issues ith Bruce Robinson, y’know fir legality sake 😉

  31. heima says:

I don’t know this story about Bruce Robinson but I was talking about the director of Romeo and Juliet, yes.
They were filming The Champ in 1979 and they were friends. He said that Jon sometimes went to his house with his children and Angelina loved to eat the “focaccia” (italian flat bread) cooked by Zeffirelli’s “nurse” Vige.

  32. heima says:

*used to go to his house…

  33. RAN says:

OMG, I haven’t heard of nor seen a Service Merchandise in Lord knows how long! Thanks for the memories 🙂

The jewelry was unique and beautiful – a little odd with that dress style, but (who cares?), it was still eye catching.

  34. michellle says:

If you ask me emeralds are always in style. At least huge simple stones uncluttered by diamond accents the way they’re usually done, and it certainly doesn’t hurt to be worn by a woman with a stunning face who understands the power of an understated gown when paired with gems like those. While I’m far from a Brangeloonie, she was breathtaking, but those rocks… I havn’t seen anything like those since visiting the Topkapi palace where there’s one of similar tone about half the size of my fist hanging from Suleyman the Magnificent’s throne. So the speculation about the gems is understandable; fake, real, African, Columbian, Burmese whatever they were spectacular! I’d say they were definitely not a true cabachon as a rounded cut/dome surface would be an absolute waste. Moreover, at certain angles you can see the faceted cut unless that’s an illusion, perhaps the faceted cut are just slightly rounded. I also read they were backed in yellow gold, but so well done it is barely noticable.

As for Amy Adams, she’s just lovely but that piece she wore around her neck would have better served as an accessory to Cleopatra costume.

  35. michellle says:

    “haven’t” oops

  36. Judy says:

You may love our parents but it doens’t mean you like them. You did not live AJ ‘s life without her father . He wanted nothing to do with them while they were growing up but when she hit the big time then she was his daughter. You may put up with crap from your parents but she doesn’t and for that I give her credit. SHe is an adult who made it on her own and who had a mother that worked to support her and her brother, but no dad. So let it go folks, you have not walked in her shoes.

  37. Blah blah blah says:

    Exactly, Anon!
