Amal Alamuddin quit smoking cold turkey when she met George Clooney

FFN_Clooney_George_SGP_092814_51542809

I guess Amal Alamuddin and George Clooney are currently on their honeymoon, possible in Marrakech. I hope they’re having a good time. I really hope…well, I hope Amal gets pregnant, quite honestly. That would just be FUN! I’m still sort of confused as to how this whirlwind courtship, engagement and marriage came about, and I’m also wondering if we’re going to find out more about Amal now that she’s officially Mrs. Clooney. People Mag has this very interesting story where it seems like the focus is on Amal and her dreams and desires. What’s this? She’s not some bland vessel for Clooney?!

One night last summer, Amal Alamuddin and Jae Kim, her dear friend since law school, had a heart-to-heart about love.

“[We] stayed up talking late into the night about relationships and whether she would ever meet her partner in life,” recalled Kim during a touching speech at Alamuddin and George Clooney’s Sept. 27 wedding ceremony. “She had just been picked the ‘Hottest Barrister in London,’ and I was concerned that this would not work in her favor, as most men found her intimidating already.”

What’s more, Alamuddin’s bar was almost impossibly high. “The list of things she was looking for in this man, she readily admitted, could not realistically be found in one person,” shared Kim. “She was looking for Mr. Perfect, and he was nowhere to be found.”

Until she met George. While Alamuddin, 36, was clearly smitten, the actor’s reputation as one of Hollywood’s most long-standing bachelors was not lost on her friend. “I have to admit, that caused some motherly panic,” Kim said in her speech. “Is she going to get hurt? He isn’t exactly Mr. Commitment, I thought.”

Those fears were quickly dispelled. “You could see in the way he held himself, treated her and others, and enjoyed life that his heart was big and he loved her with all of it,” she said.

The effect Clooney, 53, had on Alamuddin was evident: She quit smoking (“cold turkey!”), and uncharacteristically, Kim joked, “ever since she met George, she has been on time.”

But most of all, she said, “I had never seen her smile like that. She has had that smile now for almost a year straight.”

The couple’s love story, said Kim, “is nothing short of a fairytale.”

[From People]

This is like the most we’ve ever heard about Amal. She was a smoker who quit cold turkey?! She worried she would never find “Mr. Perfect”? She used to be late all the time?! Wow, this really is a fairytale. Of sorts.

Also, I’m not sure if people caught this, but The Daily Mail did a side-by-side comparison of Amal’s style versus Duchess Kate’s style and guess who came out ahead? AMAL. The Mail constantly compares various women to Kate, often dubbing those other women “Copy-Kates.” I was shocked to find that The Mail’s editors seemed to like Amal’s more sophisticated style more than Kate’s college-girlish fashion. I really wish they had used those photos of Amal’s casual street style though, because if Amal has an stylistic Achilles, it’s her taste in jeans. Fun fact: Amal is only four years older than Kate.

Both women, Amal and Kate, look way older than their years. Both would benefit from putting a little meat on their bones.

    • don't kill me i'm french says:

      Agree

    • LadyMTL says:

ITA but if I had to choose between them in terms of style, I’d go for Amal. (Ugly jeans choices being the exception). Kate’s look is just so blah now, because she has no choice and can’t get creative with fashion anymore. So yeah, Amal FTW there.

      • Gea says:

I like Kate, she just always looks good to me, under the surcomstences. Amal is a newcomer and I think she is trying to define her style.

      • debra says:

You haven’t seen the black zoot suiter shoes amal wore before George began paying for the wedding…horrid, really bad.

    • Jedi says:

both were (are?) smokers too, so thats got to age them a bit as well.

    • jane16 says:

Agree she’d probably look better with 10 more pounds. George likes ’em thin. I think Stacy lost 10-15 lbs when she was dating him.

    • Tiffany :) says:

As long as they are healthy, I think their weight is fine. We shouldn’t nitpick if a woman is a few pounds over/under the ideal, right?

    • lana86 says:

I enjoy Amal’s style, and even when it’s questionable she’ so gracefull that she pulls it off!!

    • Steph says:

      Agree. Wow, she’s thin.

    • Someonestolemyname says:

      Agree.

    • Sky says:

      It’s a he..

  2. Charlotte says:

Dude, it’s after midnight here; i was like: ‘quit smoking Cold Turkey’? Is that a thing? That’s not a thing.

    It’s not a thing, right?

    Right.

    Right?

    • Erinn says:

Hahahha. I’m overtired, and this made me laugh far too hard.
Note: I’ve given up caffeine cold turkey after drinking energy drinks and coffees in the same day. It was not a fun time. And of course my dad was like “well maybe you should warm your turkey up and you won’t have a problem” because he has the lamest/most amazing dad jokes.

      • Charlotte says:

Dude (I’m bringing back dude) I’m living on caffeine since having pneumonia and pleurisy and my body rejecting all attempts at food. Quitting cold turkey is madness talk. Madness.

Lame dad jokes are the best. Ever.

      • Erinn says:

Ugh – that must be horrible.

Honestly… quitting that cold turkey was absolute hell. ABSOLUTE. I was having legit withdrawl – I looked like a shakey drug fiend. It was like having a horrible flu and losing your best friend all at once.

Needless to say, I’m back on the crap haha. Just to a lesser extent. I did manage to get past the cravings/withdrawls and wait a couple months in between starting up a much more restrained relationship with caffeine.

      • Tiffany :) says:

I had to give up caffeine for 3 months once, and I was taking naps all the time. I thought it would get better by the end, but no.

    • wolfpup says:

She must not have smoked more than 5 a day. Sadly, there are no Mr. Perfects, and no fairy tales.

      • Sassy says:

That is about what I smoke a day – sometimes less. I don’t smoke enough per day (15) to take nicorette. Should I even bother? I don’t have really bad cravings if I don’t smoke either.

      • Snazzy says:

LoL I know right? I was a heavy smoker – one pack a day at a minimum, usually closer to 2. When I quit, cold turkey was not an option. Started with the patch, then e cigs helped as well. And even with that I was a raging bitch going through massive withdrawal ….

    • ElleV says:

I did when I coughed blood one day, like some consumptive Victorian heroine. Immediately thought, “I’M GOING TO DIE IN THIS MOVIE!!!” Never looked back – the smell of smoke makes me sick now. Coincidentally, my dad quit the same way for the same reason (minus some drama lol). I do think it’s a fairy tale for most smokers, though! Caffeine and croissants… that’s another story.

    • LizLemongotMarried says:

I would like to weigh in on “dude.” I use Dude ALL the time. I’m just glad someone else still uses it.

    • JustChristy says:

Just don’t try smoking greased pig, ti’s incredibly difficult. Although they do light handily, being greased and all.

    • Chris says:

I gave up cold turkey when my ex became pregnant with our first child.

  3. Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I like Kate’s fashion better than Amal’s….at least Kate errs on the side of too boring and conservaitve, while the getup Amal (sometimes) wears errs on the side of “14 year old girl who thinks she’s CUTE”…

    • wolfpup says:

IMO thinks that Amal is cute, and Kate is haggard. I’d rather be cute than BORING. Amal way out distances Kate when it comes to sophistication, as well as being more appealing .

      • Maggi says:

I completely agree wolfpup. Amal doesn’t look older than her years as people above stated… She dresses in a more sophisticated manner than Kate and still manages to look younger than her. Amal wears a little too much foundation for my taste (love the bright lips though), and I think that makes her look older too. Kate looks older because her skin looks old.

To be honest I was so uninterested in the whole Clooney extravaganza. Weddings bore me. But somehow Amal won me over with her fashion choices. Don’t really buy the whole love story thing but if she’s going to continue to provide the eye candy I don’t care….

    • littlestar says:

Agreed! Amal has strange fashion choices.

    • Senna says:

I respectfully disagree! (I know, who am I, right?) I love Amal’s slightly zany street style and get so annoyed by Kate’s espadrilles, boring dresses and perma-eyeliner. However, I really liked Kate’s wedding dress, and absolutely loathed Amal’s, so points for the trousseau.

      • Suzanne says:

What wasn’t to like about Amal’s wedding dress. I frankly thought she might put her gobs of dark hair UP for the wedding gown day affair….but she didn’t. She doesn’t wear anything on her long neck…in the way of jewelry….and I thought pearls would have looked lovely with the wedding gown.

    • Someonestolemyname says:

      I’d choice neither. Ha!
      One fashions too boring.
      One too Hello Kitty .

  4. Kiddo says:

Wow, HARD SELL. I’m choking on the aftertaste of this Splenda-heavy campaign.

    • Sabrine says:

There’s nothing interesting about Kate. Everything about her is average from her looks to her boring clothes. Her makeup is awful. Pitting her against Amal is like comparing apples and oranges. I’m not sure why this was done in the first place. They have nothing in common, whatsoever.

Good on the quitting smoking. We have one in my family and she stinks up the whole house even when she goes outside to smoke.

      • Kiddo says:

I said nothing about Kate, I don’t care about the smoking, I’m gagging on the marketing of this coupling. It’s over the top, down the ramp, and then over the top again.

      • Happyhat says:

I’m really blah over George Clooney; like, he’s my least favourite kind of man. That kind of boring suit-wearing Rat-Pack blahness.

But, quitting cold turkey you say Amal? I’ve been trying to quit for years. I’ll try anything. Even George Clooney…

      • wolfpup says:

PR does a lousy job selling Kate.

      • siri says:

@Happyhat: Clooney turkey… you might have to start drinking instead 🙂

    • mia girl says:

But you know how over time, one’s taste buds actually adjust to Splenda sweetness?
      That’s me, I’m afraid.
I’m loving every detail of this.
Bring on the sucralose-based baby watch!

      • Kiddo says:

        I’m getting diabetes.

      • Jaderu says:

Me too mia girl. I’m getting a kick out of it actually. This crescendo of coverage has me hooked. It’s like watching a cat bathing itself on the edge of the couch. You know he’s going to roll off onto the floor and want to warn him, but you also wanna see him roll off and act like “yeah, I meant to do that”.

I just re-read that and realized how messed up my mind is.

      • mia girl says:

@kiddo – I blame the simple-carbs from all the potatoes flying around

      • Kiddo says:

@mia girl, Indeed. I’m thinking some of those potatoes were stuffed with baloney.

      • mia girl says:

@jaderu – sure, you are a little messed up, but that’s why we like you! Never change. But if you must tidy your mind up, just don’t ask Sukie Whatcleanhouse to help you. She’s doesn’t know the purpose of detergent.

        @kiddo – I think you meant balooney

      • Kiddo says:

        Ha #balooney

    • Miss M says:

I thought the bucket challenge had ended. One can only wish…

    • paola says:

Yeah. I am not sure that she has indeed married her Mr. Right.
What I’m sure though is that every time I look at her all I see is Janice from Friends.

    • Diana says:

I know right, it’s an over the top saccharine-sweet campaign. Splenda is a perfect analogy. When you are in the moment and in the middle of drinking/swallowing everything seems legit but it’s leaving a bad after-taste in your mouth. People are caught up in the hype of the relation/wedding but there’s something just under the surface and it’s bueno. If Georgie-boy was a hardcore catholic I would swear that he is on a mission to get her anointed as a saint. She is apparently the most interesting and perfect person to ever pass through a vagina.

This doesn’t seem like just plain fame-whoring to me. His motives are bigger than attaining fame. Not saying it’s insidious but it is very calculated. I think it’s kind of sad actually how desperately he wants to make her into a thing. Like he has finally found the one person that he can introduce to Hollywood on his own terms and mold her public persona and that’s the only reason he chose her specifically for marriage. It just seems weird. The artifice is cloying.

      • Diana says:

        correction: It’s *no bueno.

      • Mari says:

Gonna have to agree with you on all counts. I think she was/is a blank canvass Georgie is molding as he sees fit in accordance to his agenda, whatever that may be.

      • Beatrice says:

Everyone in Hollywood should be lining up for George’s publicist–brilliant!

      • Nephelim says:

        Diana :
The correct spanish is “nada de bueno” . 🙂 The american use/clichê ” No bueno” is terrible grammatical spanish

      • Someonestolemyname says:

Well put , Diana. Totally agree.

      • norah says:

actually just to add my 2 cents in – somehow clooney wants to make amal into another version of angelina – and for him to be like brad. because for all intents and purposes brad and angelina are the it couple imo – brad has branched out into movies and tv in a big way – and angelina with her charity work etc and mixing with all the movers and shakers and i think clooney wants that. and both he and amal are making sure it happens – why else wd she be given so much publicity etc – why no info abt her past relationships etc – all whitewashed and scrubbed – it just seems too perfect a match and so unusual for clooney and his past track record of girlfriends etc – he wants to be ‘ respectable’ i think. in case anyone is wondering it is simply that i sincerely believe he wants to be like brad – because when u think abt the top a list actors brad is the top of that list by name recognition alone.

      • debra says:

I think George Clooney was a playboy who didn’t want to turn into an old bachelor. He found this woman, who was unlike anyone he knew in Hollywood. I think Amal held out on getting down with him, and poor George was just bouncing off the walls.

The biggest problem is the fact that George gave cash to the wedding. How can he ever know how she really feels when all of that money, and camera flashing in her face, and George sweeping this old maid off her feet? It’s all to bad, but maybe they will survive! At least she isn’t a celebrity…yet. I have to say she became accustomed to those cameras quite fast.

  5. bns says:

    Good for her. Smoking sucks.

    • ElleV says:

      Amen to that!

    • Caz says:

Agree. My parents were heavy smokers since their teens and both completely gave up when their doctor told them to. Both are in their late 60’s. The rest of the family are very happy. So are they.

I don’t know anything about Amal. Has she been “super styled” for this wedding extravaganza or is she usually stylish? Agree with others…she looks waaay older than 36. But who cares… she got Clooney.

Women all over the world are crying into their Nespresso coffees.

    • don't kill me i'm french says:

      +1

  6. BlueeJay says:

She is the new and rising star. Very European to smoke. Good for her for quitting.

This story will just get bigger and if she gets pregnant – then we will have to hear how it has changed George’s life and he is the richest man ever!!!!! Can’t wait – what about you?

    • Sabrine says:

Why do people think Amal is going to get pregnant? I highly doubt it. Their lifestyle is not conducive to bringing a child into it. They’re travellng all over the place and are two very busy people. I think George was fixed years ago anyway. The last thing either of them want is a child in the mix to have to lug around.

I say “probably” because nothing is really carved in stone.

    • Nephelim says:

There´s nothing “european” in smoking. I´m european and I do not smoke or drink alcohol. Please refrain the use of stereotypes.

  7. Hazel says:

She’s really attractive with sunglasses on. When she takes it off, not so much.

In other news: Are we going to receive the blow by blow account of their honeymoon too?

    • Pandy says:

Oh, I think she has a beautiful face and gorgeous hair. But those pants are hanging on her – not sure if I’m envious or scared for her lol. I like her style and I also like Kate’s … although Kate has to be more conservative due to her position.

      • wolfpup says:

I don’t believe that Diana was a conservative dresser – she was pretty much a knock-out. Kate is boring, and that college look is all she has been pulling, so far… There are no excuses when she has designers available to her, unless palace PR is still trying to sell that she is, “just like us”.

    • HoustonGrl says:

      hahaaha!

    • lisa says:

yes, covering her face is a good thing

she looks like a man to me. she’s not in show business and i think it is rude to say it but if she is going to be shoved down my throat in tabloids, i cant help but think to myself, mr bean but with harsher features.

    • Someonestolemyname says:

      +1

    • emmie_a says:

I agree. With sunglasses she looks ok. Without sunglasses she looks like a drag queen.

  8. Paloma says:

    George is Mr. Perfect?

    • Forthelasttime says:

My thoughts exactly! To think she had such high standards only to drop it all for GC. With all her accolades she’s just a girl who wants fame and attention. She must be so insecure. I bet she was a big nerd growing up. This will show them, Amal!
Also, she’s just not likeable to me. Kate seems sweet and kind. I see the woman in Kate but Amal has that masculinity female barristers cultivate in order to “fit-in”. Amal’s style post Clooney is just money, stylists and PR. Kate is boring, yes, but she is feminine and far more down to earth which to me is more attractive in a woman.

  9. Jaderu says:

I’m sorry but this is the Hottest Barrister in London
    http://danbunting.files.wordpress.com/2014/01/barristerpoint.jpg

  10. Rachel says:

I really don’t want to know every detail of this relationship.

  11. frisbeejada says:

“Fairytale” yes it is from beginning to end one great big, bloody fairytale…blergh

  12. Loopy says:

She quit cold turkey and didn’t manage to pile on the pounds,I guess it depends on the individual. The DM always do silly article fillers like that tasteless one they did with Chealsea Clinton and Kate Middleton when they were exiting their respective hospital AFTER just having a baby.

  13. Soulsister says:

Why did she sign up for this life? The woman is an Oxford graduate, an international human rights lawyer and somebody who has worked for the UN and now she is just being reduced to a clothes horse

    • Pandy says:

Ah, we all know George is going to take a run at the Senate en route to an eventual run for President. He can’t have a waitress, wrestler or escort as his first lady.

      • Ms. Turtle says:

        Do people actually believe this?

      • Pandy says:

I believe the Senate. And President, well, people voted in Ronald Reagan and Ahnuld made it to Governor.

      • Soulsister says:

In regards for George needing Amal because he wants to run for office, I’m not to sure that she would be a great asset in that case. I’ve been shocked at the level of hatred that has been directed at her, a lot of which is based on the fact that people think that she is a Muslim and the fact that she has defended people in the past who have allegedly been linked to terrorism. If George did run, his Republican opponents would not doubt use these talking points against George’s campaign.

      • Ag-UK says:

President not in a million years. I don’t think they are ready for him and and wife from the Middle East and digging thru his past he said once he has slept with too any women. If that was my friend and she stood up talking how I wanted to find Mr Perfect I would be horrified.

    • Patricia says:

Money. I bet the prenup gives her $10 million and her family are nowhere near as rich as some here are making out. She’s flying first class all the time and by private jet. She is nowhere near as successful as George’s PR people make out in their press releases to the American media who are not even doing their own research. Apparently she’s only been at the bar for 3 years and is just a junior – or so I read in a UK paper. Plus she loves the cameras.

      • hmmm says:

Let’s see how long she keeps working.

      • ur probably right says:

Thanks, I suspected that too. I always wondered how so supposed to be so high-powered and busy an attorney like her can always has so much time on hand, looking like a glamour girl – as though she spent at least 3 hours getting ready.
Many of my husband’s clients are attorneys & he said that most of these female attorneys seem to have no time for make up because of their demanding work.

      • Someonestolemyname says:

+1 It’s true we are only seeing George’s PR about her thus far.

Rumors are it was $20 million prenup……George didn’t want to go past 10 to 13 but she held firm and pushed. I’m not sure what to believe.

      • Grace says:

She was called to the bar in the UK in 2010 but practiced for several years in New York. She didn’t just start practicing law.

    • Sara says:

@Soulsister: What do you mean ‘think’ she’s a Muslim? She is a Muslim.

    • siri says:

@Soulsister: She does have Muslim roots, ok? Her father is Druze, an ancient offshot of Islam, her mother is a Sunni Muslim- so what else would that make her? Not that I care about anybody’s religion, but these are facts. Also, I didn’t really notice any hatred for her because of that fact.

  14. QQ says:

I really really LOVE that the quotes/leaks etc about her family are in NO WAY deferential to him!! LOL I love that the tone tends to be “HE should be so Lucky”, or “yeah he is a great guy for our superstar” I just simply LOVE that, If only now the media could get on board and stop with the “He Met Her Match” cause seriously seriously, he is an aging actor that quite Outkicked his coverage and his usual low aim with a super slick super pretty super smart chick that is also not all that fazed by the fame game while also not being unserious floozy courting it… you know, she’ll smile and wave and whatnot and go tete a tete with these folks but she has other stuff going on? and is also not one of those jacket/purse face covering types? … This is great

  15. Jaded says:

I’m gonna throw out a weird thought, jump all over it if you like…but there is zero history to this woman relationship-wise. Apparently she hasn’t had a serious boyfriend prior to George Clooney or her past is locked down so tight that nobody will come forward and talk about who she’s dated B.C. (Before Clooney).

Now pair that with George’s over-the-top declarations of love and the carnival wedding and all the fooferall…do you think Amal was a virgin when she met George and he’s her first? Might explain all the Tom Cruise-like gushing and chest-thumping and public displaying of his love….just a thought….

    • Aussie girl says:

Interesting about her past or lack of it.

      • Nick says:

Agree about her lack of past. Something is really off to me. They have ZERO chemistry. We only know 6 things about her yet they are being shoved down everyone’s throat. Where there is smoke, there is fire.

    • mia girl says:

Jaded, you are SO jaded. I kid – I kid.

But seriously, Clooney with a virgin is almost too much for my gossip loving mind to compute.

    • Sara says:

Umm, no. She’s of Arab descent and a lawyer. She’s probably had some relationships that will never be made public, because, well, people in those circles (lawyers, professionals) don’t usually discuss their relationships publicly.

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

That’s what I was thinking. If she’s dated in her circle–lawyers, et al–then I could see them not caring, or not being petty enough to try and get 15 minutes, for a six degrees of separation system……

I don’t think I’d bother to say something if someone I used to date married someone famous. Unless they married someone that I found really hot–then I’d brag on here until you all wanted me to shut up.

    • Patricia says:

She’s 36. No way is she a virgin.

      • RJ says:

A good friend of mine was a virgin until her wedding night at the age of 37, interestingly she is also Lebanese (Orthodox Catholic). She now has two beautiful children. Another friend was a virgin into her early 40s, until she met her current husband–Irish Catholic. It can and does happen. Judge much?

      • Elizabeth says:

It is possible. My best friend who is from India is 32,beautiful, accomplished ( & intimidates lesser men) and very sweet is a virgin…It is a matter of choice/faith , as for Amal who knows & who cares… but I would have liked Amal more had she and George had a subtler wedding…this is TMI

    • vauvert says:

I am sure she has a past, and the reason we don’t know about her previous relationship is pretty simple.
Has anyone stopped to think that maybe the men Amal dated before are not waiters/models/reality star wannabes, but most likely well educated, successful, professional men like herself? I cannot imagine an attorney or doctor who is now married or dating another successful woman running to the tabloids to talk about his past with Amal. He would be a laughing stock. Not everyone in the world wants to be tabloid fodder for the sake of a payoff, ruining his image and damaging his reputation in the process.
I am not in Amal’s league by a long shot but if I married a sports/movie star tomorrow, I can bet money that none of my exes would run to the press. Not a single one, including ex-fiancée and ex-husband, because that is just not done in our social group, and if anyone tried such a sleazy move they would be quickly ostracized.
I think it actually says a lot about her and her quality, in fact, that we don’t know every single thing about her. I actually believes she is exactly what she seems, a successful, intelligent, classy woman. You may not like her looks (I happen to think she is striking and beautiful but that is in the eye of the beholder), but some of the conspiracy theories on this site and others are laughable. If Clooney needed a beard for any reason, he could have easily gotten a cheap, pretty, dumb young starlet type to put a ring on with much less fanfare. I think this is exactly what he -and she-have been showing. They met, fell in love, got married. Maybe quickly but at this point in both their lives they know what they want and what they don’t, and if a family is a possibility, why wait?
I really wish them well. Love her fashion sense and that hair, and her self assurance, no coy fake modesty self deprecation.

      • jane16 says:

        ^^^This.

      • noway says:

You drank the Kool Aid. First the comments don’t have to be negative, and they could be anonymous sources. Let’s be honest with the gossip mags they could be fake, but until we had her friend above they were non-existent unless we were talking about her job. (Which I know from people who work in her field her level has been inflated- but that is kind of normal for that field- Talk a big show – Could be why she ended up with an actor)

The silence is weird. The friends don’t generally call the tabs the tabs seek the friends out and then usually misinterpret or embellish to make it interesting. The most we had was Howard Stern talking and posting about his 45 min. conversation with her, and please help her if he is her friend. Still he talked mostly about her work. This is so managed PR to a tee, and from the lack of anything very well managed.

Not saying they aren’t hopelessly in love and will live the fairytale life, but just saying it is weird. Time will tell.

      • Sara says:

You don’t have to be ‘special’ for your ex-lovers not to spill the beans, just decent, like the majority of working women the world over.

I don’t think she’s a virgin by any means, but I do think she has few friends, and it looks like she has only one close friend. This isn’t at all unusual for career-oriented women.

      • noway says:

Not sure about the virgin comment, but wouldn’t surprise me. Still unlikely at 36. Also still a well managed PR effort not even any made up stories about her personally. except for maybe the terrible religious crazy stories about her family. I’d rather have my teenage crush talk than that crap. Still George shut that down.

    • wolfpup says:

Jaded, I’ve been thinking the same thing. I think that George waited, and Amal was disappointed. All the photos from beginning to end, suggested that to me as well.

    • siri says:

Yes, I think she was a virgin, perhaps even until after the wedding. It’s not really THAT strange, given her cultural background & her seemingly guarded upbringing, and the fact she studied for quite a while, then worked. I also doubt she’s that attractive to ‘average’ men her age. Plus, she seems to talk about her work even at parties, as Howard Stern mentioned. He found that cool, or so he said, but in general it’s boring.

      • noway says:

Okay now I feel kind of sleezy, because after reading the comments I think you are right. The last time I thought about someone else’s virginity I was a teenager. Why couldn’t he just get married pseudo quietly like a normal celebrity, and not give me the Tom Cruise part deux show and make me all curious. It’s like a car wreck that you can’t stop watching. I think the virginity thing threw me overboard. I am done with this.

      • sandra says:

You are all highly misinformed. I happen to come from a similar background and I guarantee you the majority of professional women from our background are not virgins. I highly doubt Amal was a virgin before marrying Clooney.

      • TL says:

It was reported by friends, who knew Amal at Oxford, that she had a boyfriend while there.

Also on a GC fansite there was an article about her seeing another barrister during spring/summer 2013. It was stated on another site that someone knew her sister Tala, and knew that Amal dated a judge for quite some time.

So there is minor evidence that Amal is a normal modern woman in every aspect.

      • Someonestolemyname says:

Also there are rumors that high powered friend was already quite attached-elsewhere so that was going no where for the International one.

  16. PunkyMomma says:

I’m amazed this woman apparently has no past, quit ciggies cold turkey (I know it can be done, but still) and waited for true LURVE. Call me cynical -she’s starting to sound like a Disney princess.

    • Kiddo says:

      @cynical, I agree.

    • Greata says:

      Sainthood is surely next.

    • hmmm says:

Sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it?

      • Someonestolemyname says:

There’s rumors floating, someone sort of hit the nail on the head at what is being whispered around the internet…but nothing factual…all Rumor, so I don’t put much stock in it yet at all. No It’s not the virgin rumor.

But ALLEGEDLY, according to rumor(It’s not Facts, just gossip, so put NO stock in any of it, just saying what is being whispered around ) ALLEGEDLY she had a boyfriend, who doesn’t need press, doesn’t want it, would be bad for career to seek it and a HIGH powered relationship, but kept totally on the down low, …..and was still Allegedly ,according to rumor , involved with when she began seeing George.
The Alleged previous person of interest is way too powerful and way too-attached elsewhere to ever want or to let the friendship get in the press.

Has anyone ever wondered if maybe George was competing with a powerful man in her life already when they met? Just asking.

  17. Jag says:

This over-sell on them as a couple is becoming tedious. If he doesn’t run for office, then why the heavy spin?

She looks at least a decade older than Kate.

  18. Jayna says:

    Maybe she is a virgin.

    • Sara says:

      lol No…

Since when do professionals (she’s a barrister, remember?) discuss their love lives with the tabloids? Why should her past relationships have been chronicled? She’d led a private life till Clooney happened.

    • epiphany says:

Considering the amount of skin she’s comfortable showing, and the fact that she married an atheist, I don’t think she’s terribly religious, her background notwithstanding. She’s undoubtedly had other lovers, but we wouldn’t know anything about that as she’s been a private citizen – until now.

      • siri says:

Could be the other way around. Since she finally got married, and perhaps had sex right after for the first time, she feels ‘confident’ all of a sudden, and thinks she now can show off whatever.

    • Emily says:

The thought had occurred to me, although I felt a bit creepy for speculating about it.

If she is (I guess “was” now that the wedding is over 😛 ), then good for her for sticking to her principles all these years and also good for her for not rubbing it in our faces.

Whatever sexual lifestyle she has chosen to lead up to now, I think we can all agree that it makes up a very small part of who she is.

      • wolfpup says:

It’s interesting that the topic has even been discussed…this suggests something, do you think? Morning after, she seemed sort banged up, and that’s the look that some societies want to show for the “family name”. George seemed sort of subdued as well, but he can act! Certainly it wasn’t the kind of exit that they showed on arrival. Poor Amal – Clooney for all his money is not all that! (Big trade off for Amal). They probably don’t believe in divorce (tear drip).

      • Jayna says:

Oh, if she was a virgin, I didn’t mean I thought they waited until the wedding. Even if a virgin, which probably not, she and George consummated that relationship long ago.

  19. Rusty machine says:

I disagree. I think Kate looks so much older than her actual age–closer to early 40s. I think Amal looks her age.

  20. aang says:

I can’t believe she is only 36. She is beautiful, with great hair, but I would have guessed 40’s.

  21. Talie says:

I don’t understand why Kate can’t get some of these great McQueen dresses.

    • noway says:

Maybe Kate doesn’t like mullet dresses. Plus there is no way Kate could wear anything as short as that bell floral dress the day after the wedding. The Queen would be very upset. I thought the Mcqueen red dress was hideous, but I loved the Black and White striped dress on the boat. That was my favorite with the wedding dress being second. All the others I hated.

      • wolfpup says:

Kate has flashed her bottom on numerous occasions. I believe that her PR said that the Queen was putting a stop to that. Kate needs a buyer and a dresser and a few great designers. I’m sure that Kate is a nice girl (“like us”) but on an international stage she needs to step up her game. I believe that this stresses her out, and so some good help is needed.

      • noway says:

Marilyn Monroe style not that short of a dress as I recall. I agree and do feel a bit bad for them all, because sometimes you just want to be a slob, or maybe that is just the American in me. Maybe that is what bothers me about Amal she just seems to enjoy it too much. Kate seems okay most of the time, but I wouldn’t say she likes the attention as much now at least.

  22. Sara says:

She looks so different these days. Clearly, Clooney referred her to his dentist as it appears she’s had dental work but also a nose job? Very different from her Assange days.

    • Jaded says:

She looks the same only thinner – YouTube some of her interviews on legal matters and her nose and teeth are not at all changed. I doubt very much that someone of her background and intelligence would pull a Real Wives of Hollywood change like that, she’s far too upper class.

      • Sara says:

If you google her Oxford undegraduate pictures, you will find that she has indeed had a nose job (a minor tweak it seems) and definitely had some dental work done. I am in no way comparing her to the plastic housewives of Hollywood . And with regard to her background, what do you mean you doubt someone of her ‘background’ would have work done? People of her background are known to be very fond of plastic surgery, just look at her mother.

  23. Patricia says:

I can’t believe that George’s PR people have the audacity to release this speech to extend the PR coverage of his wedding. Really really tacky and weird. And only his PR people would have access to the entirety of this speech and access to the media outlets to leak it. Pathetic. Just pathetic.

    • Miss M says:

      I agree.

    • frisbeejada says:

Smacks of desperation doesn’t it? It’s as if the whole debacle has been scripted by a bad HW writer from the beginning and they are sticking rigidly to the script anyway – sad AND pathetic

    • Grace says:

Isn’t this just a snippet from the People article about the wedding?

    • siri says:

Actually, it’s stupid to do that. Because it makes clear that Amal was naively waiting for her prince with all the right characteristics- which makes it highly possible that, at 36, she didn’t have any serious relationship before. I can honestly say that I don’t want to be represented by a lawyer with this little life experience. She lived with her mother, studied, worked, for the rest nothing much seems to have happened. This PR move to share parts of her friend’s speech with the public makes Amal look like a silly little girl. An educated little girl 🙂

    • kibbles says:

+1 Won’t be surprised if he releases Honeymoon photos too. These two are just ridic.

  24. Patricia says:

He’s 53 looking 65. The man is no prize. Other women have had the best of him and she’s getting the sloppy leftovers.

    • Miss M says:

I think his exes won. They made a ton of money with their association with Clooney and now they are married to handsome and young men. Not only George has a back problem, he had 2 bounds of malaria, which means his liver is gone…

      • Leah says:

Staceys husband is very average looking. Don’t think she traded up looks wise, he is just younger and rich of course.

      • Miss M says:

@leah: I was focusing more on elisbetta. As for Stacy, I would the N average YOUNG liking guy over George Clooney.

@kibbles: like Julia Roberts or not, but during the ocean days she said in his face: “you will get married one day and she will think she won the lottery, hahaha”

      • mia girl says:

@leah – fun fact about Stacy’s husband, his last name means “poor” in Spanish.

      • siri says:

@Leah: Stacy’s husband looks like a sympathetic guy to me, and they look good together. With Clooney, she not only lost weight to the point of being ‘bony’, she also started looking much older than her age. Now she looks very healthy, and radiant.

      • Someonestolemyname says:

I think Stacey’s husband is very good looking and he appears to really be in love with her. She looks really happy too.

    • kibbles says:

As a person he is no prize. The prize for Amal is his fame and connections to Hollywood and the fashion industry. She would not be featured in Vogue, Hello, and People if she were marrying some rich but boring and unknown lawyer or even a British aristocrat. She is LOVING the attention so this is probably her version of happily ever after. A very shallow and superficial one but one that she seems to enjoy. And as people have speculated, these two do not have any chemistry and one or both of them might suffer from a low sex drive. This marriage is not about physical attraction. It’s a business deal between a sugar daddy and a younger woman eager to be the famous wife of an A-list Hollywood actor.

      • Cheryl says:

        Preach it!
But he might be a relatively decent person to have a business deal with.

      • siri says:

@Cheryl: Sure, he will take good care of her, being sort of a father figure. I think he likes that, too. Gives him the illusion of control. And I don’t think he needs to be afraid that she will cheat on him.

      • Someonestolemyname says:

        +1

    • Luciana says:

George is 53!!! ?????????????????????? I thought he was at least 60. I think he is good looking but man, he hasn’t aged well.

  25. Kcarp says:

Ya a baby so fun. I’m sure as a 6 year old it will be fun when dad is 60.

  26. Patricia says:

Does she know about George and Ginger Lynn?

  27. Rita says:

    She quit smoking cold turkey?

I’m not up on all the latest Hollywood fads or social mores of high society but I have to ask, Is this an animal rights thing and why would anyone smoke a cold turkey in the first place? Barbecued turkey I can understand but cold turkey doesn’t sound good at all.

    • Angie says:

Maybe smoking turkey was a side business. Lots of people love to eat smoked turkey.

*ba-dum-bum* Don’t forget to tip your waiters!

    • wolfpup says:

“Cold turkey” means that she stopped smoking, and never picked another cigarette up. For those who smoke, this sounds very suspicious, as cigarette smoking is one of the most difficult addictions to break.

      • sophie says:

I was smoking over two packs a day and quit cold turkey over 20 years ago. Knew I couldn’t just cut back. First two weeks were difficult but it got better. After seeing my mom and aunt with emphysema (sp?) decided it was time to give it up. Now, seeing the price of cigarettes am glad I quit when I did.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I did, too, Sophie. I smoked between 1-2 packs a day all through college. I have two blood relatives who died from emphysema, and one day I just said, “this is stupid” and I quit. It wasn’t easy, and I STILL crave cigarettes from time to time 30 years later, but I did it.

      • siri says:

Maybe she smoked 3 cigaretts a day 🙂

      • Suze says:

I’m pretty sure the original commenter is making a liile joke.

  28. Suki2 says:

It’s every rom com ever made. Professional woman in her 30s despairs of love meets commitment-phobic rich bachelor who has done same. Fairytale wedding with costume changes, boats and Motown sing-alongs on the Grand Canal!

    • Forthelasttime says:

Yes, she does sound like a typical professional woman in her 30s… They impose their text-book standards on themselves and others only to dump it all, like a sack of hot potatoes, for the next interested male.

    • Caz says:

oh so true! Aniston is crying into her margaritas that she didn’t get the gig.

  29. lowercaselois says:

Oh that is how she stays so thin instead of food she puts a cigarette in her mouth. ALSO studies show that smoking is a predictor for divorce. Those who smoke have characteristics and life experiences that make smokers more divorce prone than non smokers. It is a little higher if the wife is a smoker

  30. qtpi says:

Explain this to me though…. if this is a contract beard situation…. why would she want to do that? I get the money and the fame I suppose but you have to be willing to throw away legit love chances.

I’m hoping it is the real deal but it is really hard understanding where George is coming from after being single so long and saying over and over how he wasn’t getting married again. And to date someone so different from the other girls. Sarah Larson much???

    • Etheldreda says:

” I get the money and the fame I suppose but you have to be willing to throw away legit love chances. ”

But some women – and a smaller but growing number of men – do just that all the time. They choose a partner because he/she can bring them wealth, fame and prestige, not out of love. And if you get on reasonably OK with the person, and maybe don’t have to see them that much anyway, perhaps it’s not such a bad deal.

Also, given that Amal doesn’t appear to have any ‘past’, maybe she’s one of those women who just isn’t that interested in romance?

      • hmmm says:

Agreed. It’s clear that there are people who don’t value love as much as money and status. It might even be considered a hindrance.

  31. Santolina says:

I believe it, ‘cuz apparently she quit eating and having sex, too. For $10 million, you’d be surprised what people can do.

  32. TheCountess says:

Well, smoking is gross, so I applaud any reason one finds for quitting.

But, and I never thought I’d say this: Could we get an Almalooney-free October? These past few days have really burned me out on Clooney-related news :/

    • Senna says:

yeah, I was into their wedding at first, but even I thought the media saturation was a bit much when my Dad started to explain their wedding photo lockdown strategy to me over the weekend. My celebrity-illiterate dad knows details about this wedding! That’s a step too far.

  33. belladonna says:

I smoked about 1/2 a pack to 1 pack for 5 years. I quit cold turkey too! I didnt pack on weight either. It really can be done. I think it’s just been built up into this impossible thing. It’s as easy as deciding to go for a run every morning or cutting out sugar. Not fun, but doable… and as time passes it becomes the new normal.

    • floridaseaturtle says:

You are so right, belladonna. I quit cold turkey (twice…ooops), with no medical aids or weaning. The first time lasted almost 5 years. Then, I had a devastating day and just decided to buy a pack and smoke away. My husband didn’t think he could quit without something like Chantix, because he had been smoking for 36 years (he started at age 8). A friend gifted him with a box of Chantix, because she decided she didn’t want to take it after all. I told him I would go cold turkey with him. I reminded myself to be very mindful of the bitchiness I would feel especially the first 3-4 days. I told myself to take a shower or a pretty bath or even eat instead. He is so proud of his accomplishment, and I am so proud of him too. That was last Feb. 2013, so we are not far from 2 years now. You are so right, it does become the new normal in time, and it really can be done. I think taste buds grow back after quitting smoking, because he was so -surprised when he started really liking different foods or spices. Hence, another reason why people like us gain weight, especially in middle age. (agggh..sorry for long post)

  34. Byte Me says:

I always thought smokers who quit put on weight. This woman is extremely skinny. What did she look like before Clooney?

  35. Vava says:

Amal is much more interesting in a fashion sense, for once I do agree with the Daily Fail. I’ve actually come to loathe most of what Kate wears. I don’t mind Amal’s casual outfits, either.

    • Vava says:

Lots of people don’t leave immediately on a honeymoon.

      • roses says:

George Clooney when giving some interview for that reward he received recently said he had to get back to work after the wedding, I think he’s filming a movie so there that.

  36. Mrs Darcy says:

Here is an off topic thought… What if getting married in Italy was Amal’s idea (and ofcourse Clooney went along what with having a house in Como etc) And being the “smart” barrister she is, she must have known how difficult it is to get a divorce in Italy if you married under the Italian law. I think this is her key takeaway from this marriage if it is indeed a beard marriage… with the tough Italian divorce laws she get to stay Mrs. Clooney for longer and reap the publicity she seems to not mind.

    • Mrs. Darcy says:

hm…hi…who is this Mrs. Darcy? I was the only one I thought! I know I don’t post religiously but maybe a distinction would be helpful? Sorry if is a coincidence but I have posted w/this name here for yrs and have not seen anyone else use it before. -Mrs.Darcy

      • Santolina says:

Looks like you have a (.) after the “Mrs.” and the other Darcy doesn’t. You’re separated by a mere dot!

    • Mrs Darcy says:

HI- I am the wife of Mr Darcy 🙂 (Ok fictionally!) Sorry I hadn’t seen your posts around and I too comment infrequently but with this name. Hope you are cool with this, it is a coincidence but hey we are separated by a dot…who knew a typo will come in so handy!

@Santolina: Thanks for pointing out a difference even I might have missed 🙂

  37. rrabbit says:

Now that George Clooney is Mr. Alamuddin, will we find out more about him?

  38. vilebody says:

I’ll admit I was a skeptic about the whole romance, but their PR blitz (and their silly pic!) has totally won me over. Yeah, Amal seems pleased with the publicity, but let her have her moment in the sun. If she were a true famewhore, she wouldn’t have gone the “work-to-2:00am-each-night-for-prestigious-law-firm” route. I’m pleased that the Daily Mail is showing that a woman with a killer education and career can be just as glamorous and fashionable as Duchess Kate.

    • Sara says:

She is truly a fame whore. She makes celebrities look like amateurs.

      • Jaded says:

As I stated below, lots of people have showy, overblown, expensive and over the top weddings. It was their wedding, let them do it a way that makes them happy. And I might add, she’s not a famewhore for doing it, she’s a high level human rights barrister marrying a celebrity and they both graciously allowed the public to be part of it. Now that it’s over it will be back to business for both of them.

      • Someonestolemyname says:

        Haahahaha
She does looooove the cameras on her.

      • Caz says:

Right now PMK is howling “Venice. Canals. A-list Guests being papped by a flotilla of paps. Why didn’t we think of this. We’ve been upstaged. Nooooo!”.

  39. hmmm says:

The only thing I learned about her in this article was that she used to be late all the time- the sign of someone who feels entitled and special. Also, it seems she’s been single all these years because men were ‘intimidated’ by her. I wonder what that means, because Pygmalion clearly has his Galatea and she had no problem being moulded by him.

I’m beginning to think that George truly has met his match and then some, and that somehow this might not bode well for him in the future.

On another note, I look forward to seeing what she’s wearing because she’s not totally boring like that other princess and I continue to covet that striped dress by Dolce and Gabbana.

    • siri says:

Being late also speaks of disrespect, but I think most people who are always late are not even aware of that. I think you could be right about George getting more than he bargained for with her. He should also have an eye on Mom Alamuddin. I believe he made a huge mistake by getting into it too fast. He was desperate to not loose what he thinks is the perfect juwel for his image change. And I agree on that D&G dress- just marvelous.

    • Vava says:

      That striped dress is fantastic.

Amal is an attorney. She’s used to being center stage. You know what else? I don’t get this ‘famewhore’ vibe that some folks do and besides, it was her wedding and what a perfect time to stand out from the crowd. She’s going to be fun to watch in the coming years. She’s certainly more interesting, glamorous, and works harder than that ‘other princess’ (love your phrase).

      • Jaded says:

I agree and now that the wedding is over I think it will be back to business as usual after the honeymoon. They’re both probably exhausted by the whole show but you know, it was their damn wedding and they can do what they like to celebrate it. Lots of ordinary people have outrageously complicated, expensive and showy weddings, so let them have their day in the sun.

      • sandra says:

She famewhores on a regular basis, not just her wedding. I live with a high-powered attorney and trust me, they’re serious, private, and mainly subdued, which is just as well. How can anyone take her seriously after THAT dress? She claims to be mainly interested in human rights, a field that commands gravitas. She might as well have flashed us. But I understand, you are all rehashing Lainey’s take on this.

  40. Luciana says:

I said it yesterday. She looks like the love child of Anne Hathaway and Janice from “Friends”: Big hair, tall, painfully thin, cannot dress to save her life. I know many of you like her style but I think she has more misses than hits. No disrespect but that red dress she’s wearing in the last picture looks taken from a Salsa Contest. IMO if she didn’t overkill it , she would be really stylish: Less is more, Amal!

  41. Jayna says:

Which network, CNN or MSNBC, that gets her first as a legal analyst for breaking international affairs stories? We all know that’s a given.

  42. Senna says:

I really apologize if this was hashed-over yesterday, but I just got back from my own wedding and want to talk Amal’s wedding styling. It’s awful! So awful! I don’t understand why someone who looks so good in minimal looks like the white pants, blouse and hat ensemble would go for something so lacy and frouffy with grandma-embroidery on the veil. I was hoping for a Carolyn-Bessette-style minimal dress and I was sorely disappointed. I do not have the figure to wear that stuff, and she does – what a missed opportunity IMHO. Boo!

  43. hmmm says:

I have wondered if there were any Middle Eastern inspired touches to the wedding event. I’m surprised that we haven’t heard of any.

    • siri says:

That’s a good one. After all, why not? Only part of the food at one of the dinners seems to have been Lebanese.

    • Sara says:

She did give George cufflinks with his name inscribed in Arabic and they are spending their honeymoon in Marrakech.

  44. weegiewarrior says:

Can u still really claim to b a humanitarian and overall do-gooder if u spend upwards of $8 million on ur own flashy wedding? Did they give any of their fee for the pictures to charity?

    • Jessica says:

Apparently the whole fee is being donated, yes.

    • Sara says:

Of course not. If you spend @ 13 million dollars on a pubic spectacle of a wedding then donate the ‘photos’ to charity, most likely Clooney’s foundation, I think what you’re selling is narcissism rather than altruism. Let’s get real, here.

    • Irene says:

I’m not really sure you can claim to be a humanitarian and a do-gooder if you are defending Gadaffi’s minister, Assange and Timoshenko…

  45. browniecakes says:

She could use some cold turkey on a whole croissant with mayo and cheese. In the words of my Grandma,’ eat something Dear’.

  46. Mrs. Darcy says:

I don’t love her fashion sense, it’s pretty garish and there’s a lot of weird hemlines going on. The hair is so Duchess Kate with the blowouts, I find it slightly ageing. The cold turkey smoking thing is hardcore, she wanted to bag the white whale pretty bad!

  47. Carrie says:

From what I understand Kate is still, or was until recently, a very heavy smoker. William too. Kate looks way older.

Kate does look older. I think part of that is because she is not at her ideal weight. Amal may be thin, but her bone structure can handle it. (FLORC had a post about bone structure that was very interesting.) I don’t think Kate has the small bone structure that Amal does.

But yeah, the smoking has to have it’s effects as well. Kate looked good when she was pregnant (although her fashion choices were very sketchy, IMO), but later on she dropped weight and looked pretty haggard. (Again, IMO).

So what their couple name Amalooney chosen because it sounds a lot like alimony. I’m just saying that the split rumors are going to be…epic.

What did she say when he told her that she’d have to quit having sex too?

Almal sense of fashion is a “bit young” for her age. She is smoking thin and almost flat ! She has a nice face though !

The. Daily Mail already has an article saying George and Amal barely know each other and chances are it won’t last!
The Daily Mail promoted the hell out of the wedding now a few days after, writing it may not last!

I wonder if George will rattle of another letter to them!!!
