Tom Hiddleston beat Benedict Cumberbatch for ‘best-dressed man’ gong

wenn21270886

Glamour UK has released their list of the best-dressed celebrities in the world. As you can imagine, with a British publication, the list is definitely skewed towards the Brits. Before we talk about the ladies, let’s discuss the men. Apparently, Tom Hiddleston – a man who has barely been on any red carpets in 2014 – won “best dressed man.” I know there’s some kind of blood feud between the Cumberbitches and the Dragonflies, but Benedict really has been seen much more this year. Surely Bendy should have won this particular gong? #RememberTheVelvet

The men’s list, in descending order: Tom Hiddleston, Robert Pattinson (RLY?), David Beckham (that’s fine), Benedict Cumberbatch (#Velvet) and Henry Cavill. The only problem I have with that top five is Sparkles, honestly. Robert Pattinson’s suit game has improved, but that boy still has some styling issues.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were crowned “best-dressed couple,” which is funny because no one likes Justin Theroux’s skinny jeans and guyliner. The second best dressed couple? Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield, which… eh, okay. Then Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, then Posh and Becks, then Beyonce and Jay-Z. Sure.

As for the best-dressed women… Jennifer Lawrence is #1. I’m sure Bedhead will have stuff to say about this, but personally… I think J-Law is still finding her style. She’s a young woman with access to any designer she could ever want, but I get the feeling she just wears what she’s told to wear. She’s not a fashionista… yet. She might be at some point. The rest of the top ten:

1) Jennifer Lawrence
2) Lupita Nyong’o
3) Kristen Stewart
4) Emma Watson
5) Blake Lively
6) Angelina Jolie
7) The Duchess of Cambridge
8) Katy Perry
9) Jennifer Aniston
10) Emma Stone

Lupita loves clothes and she delivers noteworthy style every time she walks onto a red carpet. To me, Lupita > J-Law. Kristen Stewart? She’s improving but I tend to find her one of the worst-dressed young starlets. Emma Watson is fine, Blake Lively is meh, Angelina Jolie is single-handedly bringing back the sack dress. Duchess Kate’s style is… eh, it’s not my cup of tea, but I’m thrilled that Kate didn’t get #1 on this list. I probably would have moved Emma Stone up higher on this list. Kate Moss too – Moss didn’t crack the top ten, how weird is that?

  1. Maddy says:

David Beckham and Lupita are definitely my male and female style favourites on this list. Why on earth are K-Stew and R-Patz so high?! K-Stew only seems capable of hungover hobo chic unless she’s literally wrestled into a number by one of her staff.

  2. Lilacflowers says:

The perfectly-fitted Alexander McQueen tuxedo at the Oliviers, with the skull cufflinks, slays all. Extra points to Tom for wearing it to a Five Guys to get a burger after the awards show.

    • icerose says:

it only takes one great moment and a burger to get you that all important title.
Did he win it in 2012 as well??
Lupita wins my vote for stunning outfits.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Not sure if he was at the top but thing he was on the list last year. That tux was a work of art and that was really his only public appearance this year. Unless they’re counting Coriolanus stage door. He didn’t do any appearances for the releases of Muppets, OLLA, or Exhibition.

      • Lilacflowers says:

I forgot the Top Gear appearance, which featured the omnipresent black cardi, black t, and black casual pants but he looked really good and those are nice pieces and well-fitted, even if some people are tired of seeing them. Best dressed is about looking good in the clothes.

    • sigh((s)) says:

Does anyone have a pic of these skull cuff links I hear so much about?

    • icerose says:

Well he has had a busy year and that means we only ever see his working clothes ( with a variety of weight loss fittings) but he did rock that leather jacket at Wheatlands even if it is old and tatty. I think he only has two looks , dressing up mode and sexy casual what I like to wear mode, bless his cotton socks and worn out cowboy boots.

    • 'P'enny says:

      ditto! @lilacflowers

yep, the suit wiped the floor with them all.

However…. Glamour have obviously not been seeing his behind-the-filming stuff.

      • icerose says:

I kind of like that most of the time when he is out and about he does not give a damn how he dresses. Like wise with his selfies and fan photos-he never seems that bothered how they turn out or if he has bedroom hair and yet when he does films he is very precise about what his character wears as and how they look.

  3. Jaderu says:

    No Kimye? *hides*

  4. LAK says:

On the one hand, TH is a nutty dresser, on the other, these lists are great results for their publicists.

I feel there should be a ‘ability to add client to various pointless, but media visible lists’ gong for publicists.

  5. Miss Jupitero says:

Love Hiddles, but unless he is on the red carpet, his clothing style is firmly no style at all. He’s about as normcore as they get. A couple of tshirts, whatever else is just out of the laundry, white sneakers…. Srsly, best dressed?

    • Catherine says:

Agreed Miss J in that case E Redmayne should be no 1 as he is naturally stylish. This is really a popularity contest as fans most likely are able to vote multiple times.

      • Miss Jupitero says:

If it was a fan vote, we already know that Hiddles fans vote repeatedly. They even talk about it.

    • icerose says:

usually these competitions are all over tumblr but I there was very little about it this year but I agree that Redmayne should have been in the top 5

    • lunchcoma says:

I agree. I find it fairly likable that he obviously doesn’t care about clothes much but is willing to look appropriate on the red carpet, but that’s not a combination that says “best dressed” to me. I’d prefer it if these awards went to people seem to care and try to be unique in their daily lives. Of course, that’s never how this works out.

    • Josa says:

His style is basic, if we can call basic a style. At least he doesn’t wear ill-fit or mismatch clothes. He looks impeccable in suits though, that lanky firm is born to wear suits.

  6. Lea says:

    Fascinating….

  7. grabbyhands says:

This seems right. Tom Hiddleston always seem to look good no matter what he wears and he makes it look effortless. When the Batch dresses well, he looks quite sharp, but when he gets it wrong, he gets it really wrong. He could start the makeover by not slicking back his hair all the time and letting those lovely curls grow out a little.

How does Kristen Stewart end up on anyone’s best dressed list? I can only assume that she dresses so poorly and bizarrely that is passes for being fashion forward in the magazine world.

    • Jegede says:

I don’t understand the Kristen Stewart one either.
Sure taste is subjective but still…………………….

    • icerose says:

yes Tom makes raggedy anne Tshirts look like the perfect garment. He always seems to merge into his environment i.e. Wheatland. At times he looks like he could have made more of an effort but apart from the strange suit with attached gloves or cuffs he wore at Wimbledon one year he usually gets it right. He sticks with what feels comfortable and avoids the country gent or way to trendy for my pants looked.
But In all honesty none of the male winners are fashion icons they just look good in what they wear and they should considering they have access to the more prestigious fashion designers,

      • sigh((s)) says:

He always looks good. Even when he wears the same thing over and over. I think it’s more his comfort level in just about any outfit or situation.
The hands in these pics are killing me.

      • icerose says:

and I bet he ties his own bow tie as well

      • joe spider says:

@ icerose – Absolutely. Can’t imagine him buying a ready bowed one!!

      • Lilacflowers says:

Didn’t he have to wear a bow tie as part of his school uniform? He really has the most beautiful hands.

      • icerose says:

@Lilacflowers yes but he gets extra points for it anyway.

      • Intro Outro says:

@Lilac, they are also freaking BIG. I bet he can cover my whole forearm with his palm lol.

      • Isadora says:

@Intro: Damn. I have up until this point successfully avoided thinking about how BIG Tom’s hands are and what they can cover. *lol*

But yes, his hands are absurdly beautiful. I especially notice it when he plays Loki and they look so damn elegant under all the metal/leather villainy. This always struck me as particularly fitting for this character.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Isadora, it is impossible not to think of his hands when he is playing Loki. Marvel shoots a lot of hand p0rn. The opening shot of TDW, after the prologue, is his shackled hands. His weapons of choice, the staff and the dagger, focus on his hands. They’re the only part of his, other than his face, that are exposed in that costume.

      • Intro Outro says:

@Isadora, sorry for bringing down your last bastion of common sense 😛

    • Intro Outro says:

@grabbyhands, I don’t dig the red carpet Cumberbatch. I saw a lot of his red carpet pics from this year, including the ones from Toronto and Met Gala and GQ and he always looks somewhat uncomfortable to me, tense and sweating. I always find myself preferring his more casual pics.

As for Hiddles, he not only looks dapper, he also poses for pics and moves with some kind of effortless grace, like the red carpet is his natural habitat. I only wish he shed that deranged bunny smile 😀 He looks so much better with a relaxed face.

      • icerose says:

@Intro Outro Benny’s casual wear is far to conservative with a big C for me and makes me think of an older polo player or businessman. He looks better on the red carpet but as you say lacks the grace to be a true icon and to often for me anyway he looks a bit of a penguin.

      • sigh((s)) says:

I think Cumby rocks a suit, but you’re right, I notice a lot of stiffness in his arms when he wears one. Maybe he needs more alcohol before red carpet events.
I agree about Hiddles’ deranged bunny smile, too. It’s a little maniacal.

      • sigh((s)) says:

That’s the first one I’ve seen where he looks relaxed. It’s a slightly more casual suit and event, though.
Oh Hiddles. Even in a paisley tie he is smokin hot and adorable at the same time.

That thing in the middle is kinda cute too.

      • icerose says:

@jammypants yes he does look more relaxed in that photo. Maybe being around Tom relaxes him-but that suit is a bit off and Tom’s tie is terrible

      • sigh((s)) says:

That tie would’ve been the shizzle in the early 90’s.
        Just sayin’.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@icerose, sadly, some woman probably gave him that tie.

      • Intro Outro says:

@icerose, I have to agree about the penguin 😀

@Jammy, those aren’t exactly red carpet suits OR red carpet event though 😉

      • TotallyBiased says:

        @Lilacflowers–
Didn’t that tie supposedly come from his mother?

      • Isadora says:

The tie is hilarious! LOVE the tie! *gg* And it would be fitting if the tie came from the same woman that knitted his Olivier Award a little hat. 😉

      • Lilacflowers says:

@TotallyBiased, did it? Well, she is a woman and he should stick to his own safe clothing choices.

  8. Deb says:

When did torn t shirts , skinny jeans and dirty chucks become a criteria for best dressed? Whoever put Kstew on that Iist is an imbecile

  9. Nikki says:

LOVE me some Tom. The guy is classy, funny, charming, and not in media all the time. *Cough* Kimye* Cough.

  10. Angel L says:

Eddie Redmayne should be the best dressed male. He always looks great and makes interesting choices.

    • icerose says:

surprised by his absence because he really rocks the casual wear in the way some of the others do not.

      • Anname says:

        Agree on this!
I love Rob and he looks amazing on red carpets, but he has a very haphazard casual wardrobe.
        Redmayne always looks put-together.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Redmayne always looks good, even in a mint green suit.

    • lunchcoma says:

He’d have been on my list as well. I’ve seen him make a few missteps, but he seems to be trying to do something interesting, not just show up in what’s appropriate.

    • magpie says:

YES THIS. Eddie kills it in a suit. Everything is perfectly fitted on him and he adds his own personal touches. He was the best dressed PERSON male or female at the last Oscars and I can’t wait to see him on the carpet this year.

  11. Anname says:

Is this fan voted, or does Glamour select the winners?

  12. Size Does Matter says:

I read the headline as BEST DRESSED DONG. Still pondering how to vote on that. Do we grade on a curve?

    • Green Eyes says:

Well, if we are talking Best Dressed Dong, then Lord Hiddles wins by a landslide. The CumberBabyCarrot would never be able to keep, *cough*, UP.

    • 'P'enny says:

this objectifying of Tom has to stop!

after all, you wouldn’t catch me objectifying him at all! I’ve said all along this year, I hope he remains covered up in all his movies and not a bit of nakedness on show at all. none whats so ever. And no more bottom shots in Sherlock either, poor Benedict.

      Now stop it! #big wink #bluesuit #slippedwhitetowels #=happybunny

  13. browniecakes says:

And next year – cowboy hat Tom. Unbeatable, since it makes him like, 7’1″.

    • icerose says:

he already has the boots and sparkly dragon fly jacket so the hat would fit right in.

    • Lucretia says:

How about JUST the hat (strategically placed) and the boots? (jacket slung over shoulder?)

Just throwing it out there . . . since we’re not objectifying him any more.
      #bigWINK

  14. luana says:

this list seems based more on internet gossip hype than actual style on the public appearances (not only red carpets, because stylists can get the right dress/suit for a red carpet, but can’t hardly influence on the street style if it sucks, yeah I’m talking about you KStew)

    My two cents:
-One of the big mistakes was considering Lupita a fashion icon. The prove is that horrible dress at the MET gala. Again, you can make the right choice of a dress many times and know how to carry yourself in haute couture, but it takes just one mistake to take down hard stylists work, and that green curtain of a dress has ruined everything,
-Jennifer Lawrence is a big celeb, a funny girl, but NOT a stylish woman. She dresses like a girl, talks like one, acts like one, and that’s fine because she’s acting her age, having fun. But please not try to sell her to me like a style icon (Dior, why not choose a real sophisticated powerful woman to model your campaign instead of a girl? Julianne Moore? Robin Wright? Cate Blanchett? Now THAT’S a powerful woman.)

  15. Leah says:

Anyone else envision Tom taking a nap in that tuxedo and rolling up his jacket as a pillow and Luke nearly throttling him? He does look breathtaking on the red carpet so that and fan vote got him on the list.

Or maybe Tom won for the blue threadbare t-shirt, or the black or white t-shirt that both have stretched out necks? Or maybe the black cardigan sweater he wears like a security blanket? Or maybe it was that worn out plaid shirt with dirty vans he seems to favor as of late? I dearly love him but he dresses like my fifteen year old son.

    • 'P'enny says:

      @leah

I think Tom being a boarding school boy – would have it drilled into him to treat his tails and ties with respect and not roll them up. plus, I can’t see him napping at all – the guy bounces everywhere.

It will be interesting to see if Luke is around next year, except for UK stuff, but across the pond, I think Tom needs some American PR support, get him on the big shows and out of the internet/marvel shadows.

      • joe spider says:

Would be more than happy to see Luke Windsor disappear from Tom’s radar altogether.

      • Allegra says:

        joe spider:

        Agree with you!
It’s bizarre to see Luke in all interviews that Tom gives to the press.

      • Lilacflowers says:

He folds his clothes very carefully in the pajama pant scene in Archipelago

      • Isadora says:

@Lilacflowers: Yes, but that’s Edward. As Adam he doesn’t even change his sheets for a year. And no pajama pants.

I would love to know if he is a neat freak or a sloppy and chaotic in real life.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Isadora, I suspect a neat freak who considers himself to be in chaos. He did know how to fold those clothes quite precisely. And I’m going to give credit to Joanna Hogg for getting him out of his pants in two films.

      • Ellen says:

Yes and end to Luke W era would be nice. Hiddles, Emma and Especially Douglas need more work they can get their teeth into rather than modelling jobs. Talent wasted

      • icerose says:

@Leah Threadbare Tshirts and stand up nipples are Tom’s trade mark and must never disappear from his wardrobe.

@Lilacflower Folding your pyjamas neatly is an Eaton requisite and with all the travelling he does I think he probably has folding or rolling down pat

@Isadora Pyjamas in OLLA? I must have missed them looking at naked Tim and Tilda

      • Isadora says:

@icerose: exactly – no PJs (pants or otherwise) in OLLA – thankfully. Those vampires look good naked. 🙂

  16. joe spider says:

Can anyone remember Tom’s agent’s tweet about that Alexander McQueen DJ at Cannes for OLLA. Apparently it was new:

    https://twitter.com/twhiddleston/status/338689963845636096

Anyway, Tom only had to appear once this year, looking as he did, to win best dressed man. Nobody to beat him in a DJ

    • Isadora says:

Haha, I’ve never seen that! Baptised with champagne, now that’s decadent. 😉

    • icerose says:

I loved it even more when Tom replied in French and Hodell said he adored him—a little flirting in French on twitter warms my heart

      • fairyvexed says:

You know, this guy gets man gushing all over him when he works with them but what about the women? Am I missing something?

      • jammypants says:

not that he’s ever worked with her, but Lara Pulver seems in heat at anything he does just based on her tweets lol

Kat Dennings has said very nice things about him. She’s one of the few to say he’s “adorable”.

      • icerose says:

@fairyvexed It is men and women but the men are far more funny and verbal with it . Hoddell owns the agency Tom is signed with and he is married to his partner but it was women who recruited him when she saw him in a play at Cambridge,

      • fairyvexed says:

Well, he and Dennings had a fling during “Thor” and I guess he and Pulver had a friendly dinner date. She’s got lovely skin but in the photos she looks like a cheeto, either from tanning bed or spray tan.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Fairyvexed, Tilda Swinton, Scarlett Johanssen, Alison Pill, Michelle Dockery, Judi Dench, Rene Russo, Natalie Portman, and Jessica Chastein have all gushed about him at some point. And directors Thea Sharrock and Josie O’Rorke seem to be fans.

      • Josa says:

Just watch this interview, Ken Denning on Tom.
        http://hollywoodcrush.mtv.com/2011/05/06/kat-dennings-thor-hotties/
I do believe they had a fling when shooting Thor.

      • Josa says:

Ooops. Typo. Kat Denning, not Ken Denning.

  17. betsy says:

I suspect Tom was VERY eager to do an interview with them so hence the top spot. Come on now you know that’s how it works.

    • Lilacflowers says:

      Is there an interview?

      • Allegra says:

        Are you sure?
Glamour is a fashion magazine, so I don´t think is the right place to talk about his preparation for this role . And he already did a interview months ago for Daily Mail.

By the way I voted for Tom in this poll like 3 months ago, I don´t think one thing is
        to relate to another.

      • Ellen says:

Glamour do really good interviews that don’t sound like something a fangirl has written- looking at Elle here. But unfortunatly @Lilac this is one of these magazine/interternet polls so they won’t.
Hopefully when we all voted him his second man of the year, he will do one and also if his PR company have any sense, some interviews that tie in with the release of his new films next year. I’d rather see him in a proper mag like this than another queasy Elle interview

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Ellen, thanks for confirm there was no interview. I suspected there wasn’t .

    • icerose says:

@Ellen The Glamour Magazine Tom Hiddleston interview 2012 after he was named man of the year

      • Ellen says:

@icerose I know so we need to get him his second gig. I also hope he gets glamour and not Elle interviews. He needs a quality magazine

      • 'P'enny says:

yes Ellen, quality magazine, i vote for Hello in his lovely studio house. No silly fashion shoots, just him a blue t-shirt and loads of pics of his book cases. i love nosing at what books stars have on their shelves.

      • Lilacflowers says:

He has at least three films being released next year, possibly five if he does Richard II early in the year and if there’s an Avengers cameo. And we all know the undisputed God of Hall H, King of SDCC returns in July. He’ll be getting plenty of media coverage and interviews, including those in trade papers and larger circulation entertainment magazines (I see the cover of Entertainment Weekly for next October) and probably some of the larger talk shows in 2015.

      • joe spider says:

After the rubbish interview Elle did with him and the JA thing with Elle, lets hope he steers well clear of that publication.

  18. Elyse says:

This list lost validation the moment they put Kristen Stewart on here. I don’t mind Tom winning over Benedict, but Jennifer winning over Lupita is clearly because of popularity.

  19. Ellen says:

See what our boy can achieve when he doesn’t wear that nasty, horrible Blue cap? Mind you Hiddles looks nice and sexy in almost anything. He just needs to loose that cap. I have issues with that cap

    • Lilacflowers says:

@Ellen, I promise that should I ever get the opportunity, I will burn that cap, scatter the ashes into the Atlantic, and replace it with a nice, fresh Red Sox cap.

      • Ellen says:

@Liliac I have a warrant on that cap. First person who takes it and burns that horrid cap in front of him wins a prize.

  20. Ellen says:

Ok this might sound strange but who else finds it hot when Hiddles scowls? 😉 might of over indulged on the ‘tonic water’

    • joe spider says:

Yes, I know what you mean – I like the Andy Gotts Arctic t-shirt one.

But I do like him in a DJ

    • jammypants says:

      mean Hiddles is sexy

    • Lilacflowers says:

Lots of hot scowling in Coriolanus. And the Gotts photographs. And at Jeremy Clarkson when he insulted Eton, right before he called him a donkey’s ass in his own voice.

      • Ellen says:

Lots more hot scowling in the Asia Q&A from last October. It was probably due to the fact the poor man didn’t know what was going on half the time. Sexiest smile of the trip was when he was trying to work out that math question.

Can’t believe that’s nearly a year since he graced us and gave us the utterly perfect Coriolanus performances. Pity you can’t get it on DVD because I know a few people including myself that would buy it

      • joe spider says:

        @ Ellen

You can get it though. 😉

    • Isadora says:

Yep. Scowling is great. Sneering is great. Crying is great. Crying in an insane rage is great (“Is it madness? Is it?”).

      Ugh. Something’s wrong with me.

      • Anne tommy says:

The guardian newspaper has an article today about biopics, including I saw the light, and it refers to tom as a quote squeaky-voiced Brit. Utter nonsense.

    • 'P'enny says:

I love it when he scowls, because I don’ think he can’t do it that well, he tries so hard but it comes across like a tempered puppy whose piddled on the floor. It always turns into a cute sulk.

He can do anger and sneer brilliantly, though.

  21. FLORC says:

Something tells me most here would pick Lupita over J-Law in a who has blonder hair contest. There’s a bias. Jlaw looks awesome when not styled by Dior. Lupita matches her outfits to her eyeshadow of the day. Without fail all the coverage she got was shoes, clutch, eyeshadow to match. And her fashion was hit and miss with more than a few misses. Gorgeous for Oscars though.

And this has always bugged me for best dressed and guys. It’s a tux and suit. Rarely do they change it up. RDJ can and does do this. It pays off often too. Outside of that it’s a personal preference on what guy wore a suit/tux better.
And as far as best overall dressed BC with his boat shoes, and salmon shorts are always cringe-worthy.
P.s. Is this a list where PR pays to have their client listed? People does this all the time.

  22. Allegra says:

As I read this article, I started laughing.
It is  funny and embarrassing at the same because even the journalist(from Bustle) knows he has a few pieces of clothing and uses them often.

^ It’s well known amongst his Hiddlestoners that he owns about two suits, three shirts, and one jacket. He recycles his clothing often, and without regret.^

    • icerose says:

yes but they praise him his ability to recycle and still look good -oh I forgot Bustle is one of us.

    • Ellen says:

Bustle? Who’s or what’s that? Sorry

      • Intro Outro says:

@Ellen, it’s an online mag which, alongside radiotimes.com, has featured some fangirly to the point of embarrassing articles on Hiddleston, the most recent sample being that piece demanding that Tom get cast in The Jungle Book together with Ben *insert Loki facepalm here*

      • jammypants says:

        shameless fangirling blogs

  23. deehunny says:

Although she’s constantly naked, I think Rihanna still brings it fashion-wise.

  24. brizo says:

Cate Blanchett, Zoe Saldana, Amal Alamuddin, Taylor Swift, Nicole Kidman, Victoria Beckham

Has anyone else seen this and how reliable is Hollywood Reporter?

    http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/hugh-laurie-tom-hiddleston-star-737927

    • Dara says:

Pretty reliable I think – anyone feel free to correct me though. They didn’t jump on the Ben-Hur bandwagon, and it has the feel of an official announcement, usually the agents and reps aren’t mentioned if it’s a rumor.

I’m assuming Tom would play Pine and Hugh would be Roper. Would it be a period piece or set in present day do you think?

      • joe spider says:

I’ve read the book and really enjoyed it. Plenty of reviews of the book on Amazon and I guess plenty for Tom to get his teeth into 😉

I guess it will be present day or pretty close. He would have to be Pine and Hugh Roper I should think. I’m quite excited about this one.

      • Allegra says:

        joe spider:

You´re right! Empire magazine said the same:

“…, but we can see Hiddleston as Pine and Laurie – in his first major TV role since hanging up his white coat and cane on House – as Roper.”

    • Intro Outro says:

Hiddleston FINALLY going back to TV? For an espionage miniseries? With Hugh Laurie? COUNT ME IN O__O

    • sigh((s)) says:

      TOM HIDDLESTON AND HUGH LAURIE???
      OMG!
      🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

      • joe spider says:

I get the feeling my news has made a few people’s days.

And – they both went to Dragon School and Cambridge and have the same British and US agents. Almost incestuous.

      • 'P'enny says:

they don’t follow each other on twitter though, so i don’t think their paths have crossed ‘publicly’ to share twitters. Interesting.

      • icerose says:

I know it is a match made in heaven sighs.
And there is a bidding war going on for the USA broadcasting

      • joe spider says:

        @ ‘P’enny – I bet they will soon!

      • Lilacflowers says:

@’p’enny, I suspect their paths have crossed before given the Branagh connections and possibly the Dragon/Eton/Cambridge/RADA roots.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Yes! Yes! Yes! OMG! Yes! Now, please be s US network that is in my cable package. John LeCarre, Hugh Laurie, and Tom! How fabulous! So excited!
Haven’t read this novel. Will do so promptly since boyfriend owns everything LeCarre. Are there any nude sunbathing scenes? Just asking for ‘p’enny’s sake.

      • joe spider says:

of course you are Lilacflowers, you have no interest in seeing a naked Tom have you? 🙂

If I remember from the book there may be a yacht in the Bahamas……?

      • sigh((s)) says:

Would reading LeCarre help? I tried to watch tinker Tailor and I fell asleep.

      • joe spider says:

@ sighs I watch the weekly serial TTSS over 30 years ago and understood it but I have read the book recently and still enjoyed it.

I don’t think it will spoil your enjoyment if you read the book and I don’t think this is as complicated a story as TTSS.

I have just acquired the book on my ereader 😉 to read again. Just so I can imagine Tom……….

Le Carre’s books are variable though.

      • 'P'enny says:

Good grief I turn the internet off for ten minutes and Hiddles has snagged corker! & 6 hr drama👍 oh yes lilac I am sure they won’t let a spy drama go past without some femme fetal sexy moments. So is he doing this before skull island or after because this I would think be a very long shoot! 😃

Stupid iPhone it can’t spell – fetal duh

      • icerose says:

the script must be good if it tempted Tom back to television.
But does this mean Richard 11 is out ??

      • lunchcoma says:

I’m sure the script is very good, icerose, though I don’t think TV has the stigma it used to. It seems like a lot of actors are using these limited series as a way of reaching audiences who don’t go to see little movies like High Rise and Only Lovers Left Alive and showing how much range they have.

Oh, and Lilacflowers, I don’t believe there’s a nude sunbathing scene, but there is a melancholy love affair, so you’ll likely get your does of naked Hiddles!

      • Lilacflowers says:

@joe spider, moi? My mind is free of naughty thoughts. I’m just interested in an accurate presentation of the author’s vision and a concern for ‘p’enny’s excitable nature when it comes to this subject.

      • sigh((s)) says:

Joe- I’ve never read him. I may have been watching ttss in the evening, in which case the pace just didn’t keep my eyes open. I need to try it again. What’s the writing style like? I like Robert Ludlum novels. Is that anywhere near the same vein?

      • joe spider says:

        @ sighs

Le Carre is a very good writer, I like him far better than the one Ludlum book I tried. I would say he is a more cerebral writer than Ludlum. Although, as I said before, his books can vary but that might just be me.

I think you will enjoy The Night Manager which can be read on its own. Then if you like that try the Smiley novels. Here is a link to a list of his works and the order in which they were written

Warning – you do have to concentrate a bit!

        Thanks, joe!

    • jammypants says:

      so exciting!

    • TotallyBiased says:

I AM STILL ABSOLUTELY HEADLESS OVER THIS NEWS. I’ve wanted them to do something together since 2012, when I figured out they had the same talent management & PR.
From what I understand, it is a BBC production that they are negotiating with just EVERYBODY in the US for NA broadcast rights, as opposed to it automatically hitting either BBCAmerica or PBS.
Seems to me that NBC a) has broadcast BBC works before and b) has a good relationship with the Beeb. So I’m thinking good thoughts. But if it shows up on Starz or HBO, guess I’m getting a package upgrade, DirectTV!
Obviously TV execs in the US are salivating to get their mitts on Hugh Laurie again, after he walked away from House and said he wouldn’t do tv anymore. A mini series is perfect. Add in the relatively recent explosion of Tom’s name recognition outside of Loki (THANK YOU, HankIII!) and the level of interest is hardly surprising.

      • Camil says:

Magnificent news! I’m glad he is getting such interesting projects 😀

He will be very busy next year

    • Isadora says:

Aaaaaaah, wonderful, wonderful wonderful!!! Finally Hiddles with guns. And Hugh Laurie!! How great is this? I’m over the moon.

The only problem: I can’t wait. I will die of excitement until I can finally see it.

Not sure if I will read the novel beforehand, I fear it will take away a bit of the suspense.

      • jammypants says:

I’m so great at forgetting books as soon as I finish them that I don’t suffer this problem. That’s what happens when you read so many books every year 😀

      • joe spider says:

Haha, jammypants, glad I’m not the only one. Although I have the excuse that I’m a mouldy oldie. 🙂

  29. joe spider says:

I do hope it is shown on UK tv or I will cry. LOUDLY

Just checked it is in partnership with the BBC 🙂 🙂 🙂

    • icerose says:

yes BBC cheers and dances around the room

      • Lilacflowers says:

I’m hoping PBS Masterpiece Mystery or HBO here.

      • lunchcoma says:

That sounds about right, Lilacflowers. Limited series seems like PBS or one of the premium cable channels to me, though I could see Showtime or Starz bidding high so they could have their own limited series to compete with HBO.

  30. joe spider says:

Does that mean that Richard II is a non-starter, or why Ivory said they are waiting for Tom.

    • 'P'enny says:

@joe, i think Richard 11 isn’t going to happen, yet. I don’t know, maybe funding is an issue, 3D is expensive and using it for a non-blockbuster type film? And, i do wonder how none of the mainstream press picked up on that Italian titbit.

      We shall see.

    • Lilacflowers says:

I got the sense RII would be happening in January. Don’t ask me why I thought that. I wouldn’t think the actual filming would be more than a month. The 3D stuff gets done post production. Ivory is 86, yikes!

No clue when Skull Island will film. Or Thor III but I’m sure he knows his schedule better than we can guess.

BF just texted me that Hugh Laurie is doing a TV series based on a LeCarre novel. Sigh!

      • joe spider says:

I hope you texted back to say he is late to the party 🙂

      • 'P'enny says:

i thought Richard 11 would be straight after Christmas, too, however, leaving it late formal announcements. unless they are holding off, until Tom has some headspace because he is way into ISTL prep now. OR maybe not, because that didn’t stop the Skull Island announcement. However, it find strange that Tom hasn’t released an official quote about it, ‘looking forward to it, etc etc as he normally does.” just his usual quiet clues through his follows and his Team Tom Facebook post. Legendary are keeping him Mum for a while for some reason? “don’t say anything till comic-con, Tom”

the filming of this TV adaptation could be a long way off yet, maybe end of next year, we don’t know how far down the preproduction line it is. mmmmmm

    • M.A.F. says:

I think some of you were jumping the gun with that Richard II news. It was never officially confirmed or picked up any other than that Italian site. The way I took it was wishful thinking on the directors part to have Tom part of the film.

  31. joe spider says:

For those commenting upthread – re Tom on TV – this will be his first US tv serial which hopefully will extend his exposure over there and show off more of his range than Loki.

And such serials haven’t done Damian Lewis, Idris Elba, or Hugh Laurie himself any harm.

    • 'P'enny says:

Tom Hardy is in Peaky Blinders next week! BBC2 drama.

TV is where its at right now. True Detective, Hollow Crown, Games of Thrones are all crossing actor streams. Getting in the big actors.

I agree, this will definitely put Tom in front of a mainstream sofa -surfing TV crowd. And in a contemporary role! i need to read the book….

oh and its a BBC co-production, but they are looking for a US TV host. [i think]

      • joe spider says:

‘P’enny are you in the UK. because Peaky Blinders is series 2. Sorry if you already know that.

      • 'P'enny says:

@Joe, I’m not far from you :-p used to live in Stoke, now i’m in Greater Manchester. Yes, i have ep1 of Series 2 of Peaky Blinders saved for my saturday watching.

      • joe spider says:

Oh right ‘P’enny – I’m near Derby now.

    • lunchcoma says:

I think it’s a smart move. Lots of actors are snobby about doing television, but there’s a pretty substantial audience for premium cable dramas, and many of those viewers (at least in the US) won’t have seen Tom playing anything other than Loki.

Also, if it ends up being classified as a miniseries, we may see Tom at the Emmy or Golden Globe awards. There generally aren’t that many miniseries each year, and the sort of people who vote for those kinds of awards like Le Carre’s material.

      • Lilacflowers says:

And British actors always seem quite willing to work in film, TV, theater, depending on what is available.

      • lunchcoma says:

I’ve noticed that there appears to be much less of a distinction between film actors, television actors, and theater actors. I wouldn’t be surprised film and television become less separate in the coming years in the US as well, given that shows with shorter seasons and/or limited runs are becoming more popular here.

      • icerose says:

I referenced Tom’s return to TV because of Gatiss’s comments and because apart from the Hollow Crown which was very special he has been concentrating on films not because of any associated stigma
. But yes something like this which will carry some elements of prestige as well as getting his face out there is great. And I agree most actors especially those in the UK seem to move easily between TV/Film and Theatre. The fact that bidding has already started before it has even been filmed is great.

      • lunchcoma says:

Oh, it’s great news, icerose. Though I can’t say I’m completely surprised, as anything based on Le Carre is going to come with an automatic fanbase and the last two projects made from his books were The Constant Gardner and the Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy movie – both of which were commercially successful and led to a couple of Oscar nominations. I suspect this will end up being quite good for Tom. Plus, a modern political thriller isn’t something he’s ever done, so he’ll probably have a great time on the project!

      • Intro Outro says:

I’ve been whining for quite some time about Tom’s absence from TV where so many awesome things are happening right now. This is like, dream come true! Also, from the synopsis and various descriptions I gather that Pine’s role will be quite a firecracker:

“A former soldier called Jonathan Pine, a night porter in a top-class Swiss hotel, is recruited by British intelligence and sent off to spike the guns of an old-school-tie arms dealer called Dicky Roper […] Pine is all action: he stages an elaborate disguise, infiltrates Roper’s posh yacht, beds his sensational girlfriend, flicks through his office with a miniature camera and gets whacked about the head when he’s exposed.”

The book reviews weren’t that good by the way, but I am sure that there’s a possibility to adapt it to the small screen in a way that’ll make it shine. If it falls in good hands, that is. Does anyone know David Farr’s work?

      • icerose says:

        and this is even better.
I read some old newspapers reviews as opposed to Amazon and the book was a slight change of direction for LeCarre with less of the Smiley type bureaucrat hero and more in the line of a JAMES BOND type hero without the gadgets.

@Intro Outro Reviews were so so but its Le Carre and the bar was set pretty high in the first place and some great acting and a good script (by the Spooks writer) could override the criticisms
Also a lot of articles think Tom will be Pine

@M.A.F I think his sudden return to the UK, the sighting near the Ivory offices and the lack of a smile on his face in the London picture might have had something to do with announcement appearing to day.I wonder if he was trying to pin them down because he had this on the table as an alternative. A similar thing happened after the Crow debacle when he seem to have the part and then it vanished and very soon afterwards Coriolanus was announced. Mind you Coriolanus was one of the smartest moves he made because it allowed directors to see him un a very different role.

      • joe spider says:

        @ intro outro:

” when he’s exposed.” In the immortal words of Loki “well I guess that’s worth a look” 😉

      • 'P'enny says:

&icerose Ink Factory have offices near there to in London & office in LA. Just think he flew to LA & London to meet agents and Ink & sign dotted line. 😃

        2 star 2
        1 star 0

    • Josa says:

The tide has changed for TV here. So many high quality series on cable TVs here there is no stigma anymore. It’s a good time to be on US cable networks. Hopefully HBO and AMC are in the bidding, they have made such a splash after Breaking Bad and True Detective, not to mention great ones in the past like Mad Men. A spy series fit very well with their viewerships.

      • Dara says:

@Josa – agreed. Cinemax (Skin-emax) is trying to elevate their game too with the Soderbergh drama The Knick (Clive Owen rules!) Even Netflix now has a good rep for attracting top quality shows and talent, thanks to House of Lies and Orange is the New Black. There has never been a better time for serious, high-quality television. It will be interesting to see where this show lands.

  32. Lilacflowers says:

      • joe spider says:

Actually I am glad he has got two diverse projects coming up.

      • Lilacflowers says:

His CV is becoming wonderfully varied, isn’t it. In just the last year alone: vengeful God comic-book villain, suicidally-depressed ancient musician vampire, Shakespearean general, posh estate agent, prisoner in a Muppet stalag, gothic horror whatever, 70s physician in a dystopian nightmare, country-western music icon, and now 30’s south sea islands adventurer and 90’s era spy.

      • 'P'enny says:

        you forgot Captain Hook :-p

      • Lilacflowers says:

@’p’enny, I knew that you wanted everyone to forget Captain Hook, but yes, Captain Hook and for a direct to DVD cartoon that was the sixth in a series, it wasn’t all that bad. And my little niece loved it and it gave my sister a break from watching Frozen 8 times in a row. Frozen, Frozen, Frozen, Pirate Fairy, Frozen.

    • icerose says:

see my post above and think James Bond with out the gadgets.
And a little bit of womanising as well.

  35. Allegra says:

    This is nice!
    From Rodney Crowell FB:
“Wow. FB. A million impressions on Rodney’s post about working with Tom H. Picked up by media worldwide on Yahoo and others. And shared by all of you. Thank you!”

    • icerose says:

I know Rodney is experiencing Tom’s internet buzz in full force. It was both a great PR boost for the film and a brilliantly written piece that oosed sincerity and bromance which encapsulated Tom’s enthusiasm and dedication. All I can say in Tom f………………. Hiddleston/.

  36. joe spider says:

Would like Tom to send a tweet to Laurence Fox saying “this is what you get when you are prepared to do auditions” Mieow.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Laurence does seem to be having another bit of a meltdown aimed at Tom, isn’t he? What is his problem?

      • Intro Outro says:

        Huh? Pray tell details!

      • 'P'enny says:

oh! Laurence doesn’t have a problem with Tom Hiddleston, he’s just has a surly sense of humour.

      • joe spider says:

He has made snarky comments about Tom. And when he went to the USA to sound out his chances he said he didn’t see why he should have to do auditions, his work should be enough. (And to be fair there isn’t a lot of it apart from Lewis)

      • Lilacflowers says:

Or his father’s name should cause casting director’s to throw scripts at him and beg him to be in their productions?

      • 'P'enny says:

i just found out, that Tom Hiddleston was at Cambridge with Lydia Fox – She was his Juliet to his Romeo. Lydia is Laurence’s sister. LMAO maybe there was a bit of a “you messed with my sister..” type thing. 😀
