Kristen Stewart: ‘Whatever. If everyone is staring at me, that’s fine.’

FFN_StewartK_SX_FF3FF6FF13_101214_51557717

Kristen Stewart gave the weirdest interview to USA Today this week. She was supposed to talk about Camp X-Ray, and she managed to say a little bit about it, but the rest of the interview is just Kristen retreating into that sullen teenager “I don’t care, whatever, I’m doing my own thing, whatever.” I kind of wonder if the USA Today journalist was just asking a lot of personal questions and Kristen just shut down, or if she’s trying not to talk about anything political having to do with Gitmo after some of her quotes were taken wildly out of context by the conservative media. You can read the full USA Today piece here and here are some highlights:

Her new life: “I’m really happy right now, overly happy. I’m definitely not looking furtively – I like to look around at (stuff). I feel great. I’m not overcoming fear right now.”

She’s not a political person: “I’m definitely not one to get on a soapbox about things I care about. You can affect change in other ways. That’s why doing interviews about it is funny for me. Dude, I did a movie. I thought [Camp X-Ray] was a courageous reminder. It is not righteous in any way. I was really excited to play an essentially American girl who is so simple. I thought it was interesting to have this girl, a good person, a sweet person, a positively inclined girl, who wants to forget herself and wants to be dignified by something. How do you condemn anyone who wants to serve our country? The denigration of that notion was really interesting.”

She’s about to take some time off: “I’m taking some time off because I’ve been working for two years. I’m an actor and that’s my art form, and because I started that so young, I’ve always felt intimidated and insufficient when I think about other forms of art I want to create. I’m going to take so much time off. I’m going to buy a live-work space in downtown LA and I’m going to make some (stuff) with my hands. Literally, I made that decision a few weeks ago. I’m making a short film. I’m making a bunch of (stuff). I don’t know how I’ll put it out. But I’m not going to hold it so preciously close to me. I write all the time.”

She’s not on Twitter or Facebook & she has a private Instagram account: “What would I Tweet about? Who are you talking to? What are you saying? Imagine sitting here right now and thinking, ‘That’s a good thing to say to the world?’ What? I can’t even understand it.”

Getting back to doing press after a long break: “I’m also not that uncomfortable with it because I’ve gotten used it. I am really traversing this and getting stronger every day. I’m better at this than I ever have been. I like being uncomfortable. I like standing up to things. The last few days have been good, really good. I just got off a two-year stint of filming, so I haven’t had to do (press) for a long time. It wasn’t so loaded. It was nicely civilized and good.”

She’s always looking over her shoulder: “I’ve gotten better about that. Whatever. If everyone is staring at me, that’s fine.”

[From USA Today]

You know what this interview reminded me of? Taylor Swift’s current publicity tour. Both Swifty and Kristen got out of high-profile relationships a few years ago and they both spent some time away from the spotlight, quietly working on various projects. Both women are single right now and they’re both focusing on their respective groups of girlfriends. But that’s where the comparisons end. As for Kristen literally making stuff with her hands when she literally buys a place in downtown LA… okay, sure. I’m sure having some time off over the next few months will help with her Oscar campaign!

that describes her in a nutshell
    Whatever

    • delia says:

Ha- she totally reminds me of teen titans go’s Raven cause all she does is say whatever to everything.

  2. Josephine says:

I give her props for not being on Twitter or Instagram and for realizing that she’s not so important that everyone needs to read her pithy thoughts.

But after every interview, my thought is always the same – she needs an education. Instead of taking time off to do more “art,” she should stretch herself with a little knowledge, a little experience beyond the plastic bubble.

    • OriginalTessa says:

Kristen can’t seem to get through any kind of discussion about something she doesn’t do without completely insulting the people that do it. It’s never a simple, “No I’m not on Twitter.” It’s always so cutting and superior. Her way is the only way in her head.

    • CTgirl says:

The girl needs English and communication lessons. I’ve never seen anyone who’s in the public eye as much as she is speak so poorly – this includes guys who get punched in the head for a living, such as Mike Tyson. Between the miss use of vocabulary (“desecrate” anyone?) and her inability to get a thought out without leaning on “whatever” or her verbal crutch of the month, KS is just a big old interview mess.

      • K says:

When the Mini Coopering thing went down, someone linked to an interview Kristen Stewart had done shortly before on Youtube, and the part that struck me was the journalist got totally knotted up in her own words at one point and KS smiled at her, really genuinely, and said, “I do that all the time.” It was honestly nice – extremely self-aware, and trying to reassure the other person without any agenda but kindness.

I know some people who are brilliantly articulate on paper, and a complete mess with the spoken word. It’s as though they can’t organise their thoughts at all unless they write them. I have no idea, obviously, whether she can do that… but I do sympathise with someone whose job is primarily to make someone else’s words sound their own with utter conviction, but who also needs to be charming and articulate in an interview situation as themselves.

I don’t like the immaturity of a lot of what she seems (?) to be saying, but I do sympathise with her problems in articulating her thoughts. It can’t be fun to be that way, and be so in the public eye.

    • Veronica says:

I think it’s wise for celebrities to stay away from social media, but I also think she needs to get over herself. I am not a fan of twitter, but I also don’t care if and why people use it.

  3. Chris says:

Smoking in this day and age? What a dumbass.

    • mkyarwood says:

I agree, that last pic was so hot until the hangin’ butt.

    • OhDear says:

To be fair, I think most people in Hollywood smoke.

      • Tiffany :) says:

Not really. The laws making people go to restricted areas have turned a lot of people off because it takes so much effort! Plus, in areas like the Hollywood Hills, you can’t even drive and smoke in your car because of the fire hazard.

    • aenflex says:

This planet is overcrowded. Let people smoke, it might help with over population. There are many, many worse things to spend health, time and money on.

    • Veronica says:

A lot of people in Hollywood smoke on the down low because it suppresses appetite. Make of that what you will.

      • Chris says:

Reducing the intake of calories and increasing exercise would be a smarter way to prevent weight gain.

  4. bogati says:

I thought she quit smoking. She’s gonna blink and be 45, then that puffing won’t look so cool when she’s awaiting test results. That said she needs to know when she talks about not caring, or saying whatever to stuff – her word choice and fervency and actions denote someone who cares a lot.

  5. Div says:

I thought this was far better than how she used to give interviews…it wasn’t so much “sullen teenager” as more that she’s come to term with fame IMO. It seems like she’s matured a bit. She’s still not good at interviews, but at least this was more articulate and not full of F bombs. I’d rather read this type of apathetic acceptance than her previous complaints or issues about fame /paps that she made when Twilight first came out.

I agree with Kaiser in that it sounds like the interviewer was being weird…like every single question was about fame. Some of these entertainment journalists suck…I could do a better job. Ask about fashion or other film projects, for example, or co-stars in upcoming movies.

    • Moochiemom says:

By now. She should be able to navigate those questions with no issue but she comes off like it is the first time anyone has ever asked her a personal question. It is old. She needs to play the game unless Bella is all she ever wants to be known for. (Residuals rock).

  6. DenG says:

Her depth and insight is awesomely deep and insightful. If only other actresses could aspire to her level. Ever what, whatever, amen.

  7. Greek Chic says:

Am i the only one who gets gay vibes from her? Maybe it’s her posture, the cigarette in the mouth or that she reminds me of Samantha Ronson, i don’t know… I don’t like her as an actresss but i like her hair and has a nice body.

    • Lex says:

That’s offensive. Posture makes someone gay??!

      • Greek Chic says:

Since when being gay is offensive?I’m just saying that the way she walks and stands in addittion to the cigarette in her mouth doesn’t look very feminine and reminds me of Samanta Ronson.
They are many other women who are bi or gay (Evan Rachel Wood, Portia de Rossi) that have a more elegant allure. I don’t care about her sexual preferences, i just comment on her behaviour and expressions. Maybe she is just awkward with the paps.

      • mimi says:

Her posture makes her gay?!!!!!! LMAO

      • delia says:

It’s offensive to use bad cliches to determine sexual orientation.

      • K says:

I don’t think Lex thinks being gay is offensive. I think she feels that trying to identify a woman as gay solely because of a perceived lack of femininity is offensive. And I think an awful lot of lesbians would agree with her.

    • bns says:

I also think she’s gay, but not because of her posture.

  8. JudyK says:

She’s not looking “furtively”–what does that mean? Did she just learn a new word and doesn’t know how to use it? Does she mean she’s not being covert or sneaky…oh, well…too early to try to figure out what she meant.

Don’t get her appeal, but maybe it’s just me.

    • Belle Epoch says:

She seems absolutely horrid and so try-hard. Ugh.

    • shenasty says:

She’s always used words incorrectly in an attempt to make herself look smarter. She’s been doing it for years.

    • CTgirl says:

KS: My word of the day calendar says that “furtively” is my new word.
Publicist: Honey, a paper calendar can’t “say” but it can “show” what the new word is for today.
KS: My calendar cannot produce a “show”! It doesn’t have any electricity! Are you desecrating me again?
Publicist: I think you mean “disparage”.
KS: Stop it! You aren’t fit to breathe the same air as me and I’m just trying to be honest and real!
Publicist: (while putting head in oven) Yeah pumpkin, so am I, you are honestly a moron . . .

    • Isadora says:

Phew, it’s not just me. I’m not a native speaker, so there is always the possibility that I just don’t know a phrase, but this sentence made no sense to me. And she mentioned writing in the interview. After reading her marie claire poem I just hope she keeps writing (if she enjoys it), but never again publishes something. It was embarrassingly bad.

  9. Gigi says:

She will not nominated for Oscar. She hasn’t buzz. The only buzz for the movie is on Moore and Kristen is listed like a possibility only because Moore is the frontrunner at the moment. This movie is one woman show from Moore

  10. Honeybea says:

She already had two years off after Mini Cooper-gate but oh well…i guess that time it was involuntary

    • Liv says:

What I thought! Haha! But she’s working so hard, you know! And she’s such an artist! Just like Shia….ugh!

  11. bogati says:

Oh and not to be snide…but I really think the mass public interest in her was because of who she was in a relationship with: Rob Pattinson. You see everyone he gets paired with, essentially skyrocket. It’s the Edward Cullen mystique that’s still raging. Women love that guy and they loved her when he did. Now that that’s over it will be interesting to see if she maintains that level of interest. I don’t think she can…because it wasn’t about her anyway..it was about him.
    .
The only interesting thing about her for people is all the twilight fans wondering what her deal is that she screwed Pattinson over so completely and PUBLICLY when she was supposed to be the oh so private one guarding any info about her personal life with her life. She never confirms their relationship yet tells the world when she’s caught cheating in full public view. It made no sense…and just looked heartless.
    .
I think people now are just awaiting her coming out party…because if you diss an adoring Rob Pattinson that you claim to love (and finally, in the awful public aftermath of a scandal, describe him as most important in your world) ..i really can’t see you being het and waiting around for another prince charming.

….she must want something totally different.

…that’s where my only interest comes in…what’s your deal Kristen? Lol

    • delia says:

Both twilight stars benefited from their relationship, and both got penalized by It too. Their franchise was the shits but he was so cute and she was weird and the fan base ate up whatever they were selling and turned a blind eye to the shit on the screen. Anyone they date post twilight will get attention but that’s due to their tabloid status, which is the penalty part. No cares about their movies just their dating status.

    • K says:

I don’t have a horse in this race – don’t care if she’s dating her best friend, Nicholas Hoult, or in a secret threesome with JLaw and Chris Martin – but are you meaning to say any woman who doesn’t want Rob Pattinson can’t be interested in men? I think I must be interpreting that paragraph wrongly – no offense to him, he seems very sweet, but I don’t think all women can be judged by the Twilight demographic, surely?

I don’t think either one is that huge independently of Twilight, tbh, but I do think he’s made some intelligent choices, professionally and personally, so is viewed better than she is. That’s not the same as his having this enduring fascination for the public outside Twilight.

    • Loop says:

Agreed, I remember the crazy press r.patz was getting back in 2008 after twilight’s premiere, nobody cared about kristen before they got “together”

  12. Div says:

The haircut is a good fit on her. She won’t get a supporting Oscar nomination, but I bet she will get an Indie Spirits nomination for sure since SPC is pushing her and Julianne. I also think Julianne will beat Reese at all the awards show.

    • Anne says:

SPC is ppushing also Baldwin and Bosworth. The only nomination will be for Moore

      • Div says:

Oscar will only be Moore, but Baldwin and KStew will very likely get Indie Spirits noms. They may have submitted everyone, but they only did a press release for Moore, Baldwin, and KStew so Bosworth won’t have a chance at the Spirits and they won’t push her. Most of the awards films are either foreign or big budget this year so a lot won’t qualify for the spirits, so with SPC pushing the film will get some noms and wins there at the Indie Spirits.

      • Wallis says:

I think Arquette will win Spirit award

      • Div says:

        @Wallis

Arquette will definitely win the Spirit award. However, I think this film could get multiple noms for the Indie Spirits and maybe win adapted screenplay and definitely win Best Actress for Moore.

    • Moochiemom says:

No one wants to hear her speech if (huge if) she wins). Mumble mumble grunt thanks. Definitely provocative TV for a show needing ratings.

  13. Wallis says:

I understand because she isn’t loved. She try to be interesting but she seems dumb

  14. Jess says:

In my opinion, when someone has to go on and on about how happy they are it usually means the opposite. I would love for someone to ask her about fka twigs.

    • mimi says:

      @Jess
“I would love for someone to ask her about fka twigs.”

Why would you love that? Both Kristen and Rob have moved on with their lives and seem very happy presently. Why drag Kristen into Rob’s current relationship? For entertainment purposes? smh

  15. Ginger says:

Only the old twilight fanbase is still interested in her by now

  16. Tig says:

I agree- every interview seems to be let’s use SAT words- and she doesn’t quite understand what they mean, so it’s always a bit off.

    • Pumpkin Pie says:

Should actors have a quite rich vocabulary? Don’t have have to read a lot? Books, scripts? I guess I am a bit naive.

  17. Sara says:

not a fan but i’d be very curious what her twitter feed would look like.

  18. Leah says:

I like this haircut on her she looks good. On another note her vocabulary is so limited. She needs to pick up a dictionary.

  19. Kelly says:

Do you think she gets that Word of the Day toilet paper? And maybe “furtively” and “denigration” were Saturday and Sunday’s words? I’m all for expanding one’s vocabulary, but her sentences are randomly peppered with ten cent words that aren’t supported by the following “and stuff.” It makes me cringe a little.

  20. kri says:

My god, I honestly think she is trying to be the female young version of Brando. She sounds like Joe Giudice. Whatever, I’m going to make art forms with my hands. My 16 -yr old self would have been in love with her for a few days.Whatever.

  21. Hally says:

Girl stop smoking! Kstew is not my fave person, but girl has great skin, it would be a shame to ruin that prematurely. And, you know, ruin her health, etc.

    • Loop says:

she really should, by the hq photos of her new york press tour, she’s already there, her face looked wrinkly and with acne.

  22. Veronica says:

I DON’T CARE GUYS said Kristen as she gave her nth interview to a magazine. OH MY GOD, YOU DON’T SEE HOW MUCH UNAFFECTED I AM BY FAME? said Kristen as she signed her Chanel contract. YOU PEONS DON’T EVEN KNOW ME she stated as she walked out the house and let paps shoot her.

Whatever sure about sums it up.

  23. mfmaefh says:

    I like this interview

  24. sarah says:

    she is a fake poseur.

  25. may23 says:

She looks hot with that cigarette. In a lesbian kind of way she reminds me of Shane from The L Word 😉

  26. Helo says:

LOL!…thanks K-Stew, I haven’t laughed that hard in ages!. I am laughing “furtively” of course. Jeeeez what a dope.

  27. skippy says:

Perhaps with more years to mature and lots more well received acting roles she may win an Oscar, but I think there’s too much negative stuff about her now.

  28. Anna says:

I thought this interview is just fine. Does it occur to anyone who says she should stop saying she doesn’t care repeatedly because it looks like she cares too much that she is almost always ASKED about how she feels about people who can’t stand her? Like the petty people in these comments sections who rip apart every word that comes out of her mouth? Really, from interviews, pics, etc., she seems to be in a great place. So she is taking a break from acting to direct a short she wrote and pursue other “creative endeavors.” She’s wanted to do that for years. Good for her. She has gotten rave reviews for three movies this year and has three more in the can. I just find the people who love to hate on her incessantly to be so ridiculous.
