Tobey Maguire’s grandpa is on social security, lives in subsidized housing

In a new interview with The Enquirer, Tobey Maguire’s 71 year-old grandpa says he’s on social security and living in government-subsidized housing. Tobey’s Grandpa, Albert Maguire, used to live in a Chevy Van, but now he’s doing better for himself and is in an apartment in in Simi Valley, California.

He doesn’t blame Tobey for his predicament or anything, nor does he seem to expect he should save him. He says the notoriously tight-fisted star will send him a $100 check or gift certificate 3-4 times a year, and that Tobey invites him to his movie premieres.

“No, Tobey didn’t put me in here,” laughs feisty Albery Maguire.

“I did it myself. I live off my pension and Social Security. He doesn’t support me, and I don’t ask him to.”

“I love my grandson and think the world of him.”

The last time The Enquirer visited Albert – five years ago – he was living in a 1990 Chevy Van and rarely saw his 31-year-old grandson.

Now he’s doing better and is living in a neat apartment in Simi Valley, CA.

While Tobey raked in $32 million in 2005, he refuses to spoil his grandfather.

“He’ll give me a $100 gift certificate to spend at a local supermarket or Sears,” Albert told the Enquirer. “At Christmas or on my birthday he might give me a check for $100 or maybe a little more. I get three or four gifts a year.

“I’m retired. I’m happy and in good health. I do nothing except make ceramics.”

“I live the simple life. I see Tobey three or four times a year. He invited me to the premiere of his new movie, and we spoke for a few minutes. We’re a big family. I love him, and I know he loves me.”

Maguire told Parade Magazine in a recent interview that he was shuffled around to different family members when his mom and dad split when he was just three. He credits his difficult childhood with the ambition to do well for himself and make money. Tobey is careful with his spending, and said that he uses his mileage upgrades to fly first class instead of buying tickets outright.

He shouldn’t be responsible for saving his grandfather or anything, and if he gives that old guy money everyone else in his extended family will probably be knocking on his door, too. Still, $100 seems kind of cheap. At least he still has a good relationship with him, and his grandfather says he’s met Tobey’s fiance and his “beautiful baby.”

If Tobey Maguire does another Spiderman Movie, he is expected to command a whopping $30 million paycheck due to the franchise’s incredible success.

While some say Tobey is rude as he was seen slapping a camera out of a citizen photographer’s hand recently, the guy was said to have grabbed at him and he also posed for pictures with the guy afterwards in an attempt to apologize. TMZ has a recent video of Tobey getting in his car and ignoring someone who asks him to pose for a picture, but I wouldn’t pose for a picture with that dude either if I was famous, and it looks like he’s just fed up with the paparazzi and wants to get home.
