Shailene Woodley in Valentino at the HFAs: lovely or too mature?

Shailene Woodley wore Valentino at last night’s Hollywood Film Awards. She looks lovely but always dresses so mature for her age. I’d like to see her embrace her early 20s with some really fun fashion. Shailene won the breakthrough award for her portrayal of a teenage cancer patient in The Fault in Our Stars. The dress has star-like embellishments, so maybe that’s why Shailene picked it. On second thought, those look like starfishes. This dress looks really cheap for Valentino, but Shai’s fashion sense is very offbeat.

Shailene’s speech was very genuine, and you can tell that she loved playing 16-year-old Hazel. Shai said, “She recognizes it’s not about how long a life we lead or the mark we leave on the world that matters. It’s about simple things like gratitude and not taking anything for granted. Every day we wake up and we’re breathing, we’re winning. We all already have victories on our plate the second we leave our pillows in the morning. [She] reminded me of that, that simple truth.” I often give Shailene a hard time for her naval-gazing, but this is a fine speech.

Here’s a better look at Shailene’s dress. It suits her, but there’s something missing. Her makeup artist got carried away with the HD powder.

Laura Dern presented Shailene’s award. They’re really good friends, and Shailene spends a lot of time at Laura’s house. Laura wore this black Alberta Ferretti gown. This dress is a little too ruffly and Vegas-y, but the turquouse Ethan K clutch provides a welcome pop of color.

The dress is pretty. She needs to grow out her hair. Some women can rock short hair, she’s not one of them.

I never noticed how pretty her eyes are.

  2. AntiSocialButterfly says:

    Sigh. I miss “Enlightenment”.
Also- bad color on Shailene. Sea stars? Ick.

    • Ally.M says:

Me too AntiSocialButterfly. It sucks HBO thinking won’t let Mike White complete the trilogy. I’m in the UK but still get frustrated by the US networks taking off solid shows with great writing and characters.

Laura looks fab in those pics – good to see natural aging.

Shailene – that hair style is so unflattering, a shaved head would look better.

I doubt we’ll see this woman wear any fun things in her early 20s. She’s was 21? 22? Why do I already sense the aura of a sterotypical crazy cat lady on her? I love Laura Dern’s dress, I would spend the money to buy it. Fake smile doesn’t do it for me though but she’s always been understandably uncomfortable at these events.

    • Denise says:

That’s just the way Laura Dern smiles. Her cry face kind of looks like that too. She’s in great shape.

  4. Hissyfit says:

She looks great. I just do not like the super glued greasy hair she was sporting.

    • Hautie says:

Isn’t Shailene the one who talks about the not using shampoo and soap daily? The gonna save the world… by skipping soap and water, daily.

All I could think of when I saw her… was the lack of proper personal grooming. Wearing an expensive dress.

      • Anne tommy says:

Yep, think she is a shampoo avoider, not doing her any favours here, I am sure there is some quite environmentally friendly version she could use. Laura Dern’s figure – wow! As someone said, I’d do anything to have a figure
Iike that- apart from eat less and exercise more …

      • Veronica says:

Shampoo can be really damaging depending on your hair type, so I didn’t really find that too much of a big deal. Most women with curly or wavy hair are told to avoid using it extensively – before I bleached my hair, I only used it twice a week, and now I shampoo even less because of how drying it is. I stick to dry shampoos if I feel I need it.

      • FLORC says:

Dry Shampoo saved my hair! Comb in or the spray. I bet she’s a user of comb in if anything. And it’s home made. My hair was frayed and broken. It looked like strands of hay at the tips on top of my trichitillomania(sp?). I can’t praise it enough.

I like her look here. The dress is lovely. I only hate the deep V and the waistline or ribs needed to be more trimmed. That wold have been great if it was more tailored.

One can avoid shampoo but still use (an environmentally friendly) conditioner.

  5. Sarah says:

Shailene has limited high fashion choices because everything has to be like vegan, fair trade, no sweat shops, and fabrics she won’t wear for this reason or that.

  6. maddelina says:

    Love SW’s dress!

  7. Tara says:

I really like SW’s dress but think it would look a bit cuter if the hem was a little shorter… like knee-length or thereabouts.

  8. Her dress looks really cheap. I don’t know if it’s Eco-friendly or whatever, but I’ll never understand why some of these young starlets (or otherwise) don’t put their money where their mouths are and fund some really talented designers for eco-friendly clothing.

    • FLORC says:

      +1000!
      VC
Always such reason in your comments. This might be criticism in an after thought way, but I agree. If you feel so strongly you would 1. Find a designer that does that and commision a nice dress to wear. 2. Find a nice dress that can be made by your directed methods.

    • Isan says:

+1 she could bring a lot of awareness to vegan and eco apparel if she would wear something by a designer who solely produces and designs by these ethics. Maybe it’s just really difficult for these little known designers to present their collections to high end stars/starlets. Also it could be that because of contracts and endorsements she has to go with the big names? Shame……

      • I remember when Emma Watson was complaining about it–basically saying that she had all of these fashion contracts because she loved fashion, but there weren’t any eco-friendly ones that were really available. And I’m like ORLY? Because she’s filthy rich, in a way that none of her peers will ever be. And she could fund a few eco-friendly designers whose work she really loved, and probably spend more money on hair products in a month in doing so. But she doesn’t. Because she likes being the ‘face’ of something.

Great speech! I didn’t like Shailene before but she just seriously won me over.

  10. FLORC says:

Speeches aren’t always from the heart. I’m not won over by words often wrote by those who do such for a living. She is winning me over little by little though. Less sunning her vag and more realistic.

    • Josefa says:

She’s winning me over too, after I saw a couple of her movies. The Fault In Our Stars was too sappy for my liking, but Shailene really did deliver. Her overall persona can be quite exhausting and grating but she’s definitely talented. I want her to shut up (and take care of her hygiene), but not go away from Hollywood. She’s good. She’s very good.

  11. lucy2 says:

I don’t care for Shailene’s dress, and I would like Laura’s better with a simple skirt.

  12. TOPgirl says:

She is so boring to look at.

  13. LaurieH says:

I would put Shailene’s dress on Laura Dern and Laura’s dress on Shailene Woodley. There. Problem solved.

  14. Mickey says:

I thought the whole thing about Hazel is that she is ok not making a “mark” on the world.
