Shailene Woodley covers GQ as 2014’s Crush of the Year: good pick?

Shailene Woodley

Shailene Woodley has been named GQ’s Crush of the Year for 2014, and she got her own December cover for the privilege. This is what happens when you give sunshine to your vadge, ladies. The men’s magazines go wild. Or maybe Shailene received this honor because she starred in two successful movies, Divergent and The Fault in Our Stars this year. She was also very saucy in the independent White Bird in a Blizzard.

I don’t know if Shailene’s title is on par with GQ’s previous Obsession of the Year award, which went to Lindsay Lohan in 2006, Leighton Meester in 2009, and Rihanna in 2012. Those were December titles too, so maybe “crush” has replaced “obsession.” All of the previous ladies participated in risque shoots for the mag, and maybe Shailene’s appearance signals a shift in GQ’s perspective. Or maybe not. Shailene certainly has a wholesome image even though she regularly gets her kit off onscreen. She doesn’t reveal too much on this cover but does show some suggestive skin with a menswear blazer and tiny skirt. Do dudes crush on Shailene en masse? I think everyone was simply blown away by all those crazy interviews. Guys probably find her shtick intriguing.

FYI, Shailene reportedly has a new boyfriend, Hawaiian musician Nakho. He presumably enjoys foraging for wild leeks and crafting weapons from nature with his lady.

Shailene’s Fault in our Stars co-star, Ansel Elgort, got his own cover too. He’s one of several Men of the Year.

    In a word, no.

    • Charlie says:

      Exactly.
      She’s incredibly annoying.
I don’t know anything about him but he seems like a douche.

  2. Dana says:

    Lol.

I get told I look like Shailene Woodley. Personally, it’s a bit disappointing because I don’t find her face attractive.

    • Charlie says:

You’re lucky. As annoying as she is, she is a very pretty young woman. Especially with long hair.

    • Kitten says:

Especially in this picture. The outfit is sexy but her face looks pretty bad.

Shailene is the type of woman who looks better with less makeup. That’s not a bad problem to have by any means but she simply doesn’t have features that are strong enough to carry all the makeup they put on her face here.

    • Josefa says:

Shailene’s not ugly at all, she just has awful taste in hair and makeup. The thing about her is she’s not exactly a Hollywood stunner but an everyday, girl-next-door type of beauty. And as such, she should stick to little makeup and normal long hair. She looked really pretty in Divergent.

  3. COSquared says:

A woman covered on the cover of GQ? Why no, not a snowballs chance in hell. And she’s so mehhhh……

  4. Mata says:

I think if we’ve learned anything from Maxim’s hottest woman (Miley Cyrus) and the cover of Vogue (Kim Kardashian), it’s that a good publicist can buy you any magazine you want.

  5. Erm says:

I truly do not understand why this girl is a thing. :/ Seems like a nice person, but yeah, I guess I’m not the target audience.

    • Sonya says:

I don’t understand either. I mean, I think she was cute (not movie start gorge) but she is looking odd (not ugly, just off somehow) to me. Is it simply her hair cut?

  6. Barrett says:

She’s prettier and had more presence on film. I think photos just don’t do her justice.

  7. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I guess she’s not going away. Another birthday wish wasted.

  8. Kate says:

I just find it creepy that GQ continues to be so obsessed with women under 25 while simultaneously marketing the magazine to guys a bit older and often featuring male celebs much older.

I’m just so tired of this obsession older men have with young girls. I know this kind of thing isn’t anything new. But it’s like once you see it you can’t unsee it. It grates.

  9. Jessica says:

Why does Ansel Elgort get to be fully clothed while Shailene has to bare her cleavage and legs?

  10. captain hero says:

I’ve tried not to comment on shailene Woodley’s appearance before because I don’t believe it has any relevance to her career as an actress. However, since the gq crush award is, I’m assuming, based solely on looks here goes.
Does anyone remember the episode of Angel where everyone thinks Jasmine is a beautiful ethereal creature, and only Fred can see her true hideous form? That’s how I feel about shailene Woodley. There is no way everybody else is seeing what I’m seeing.

    • Pix says:

Oh that is rough – i don’t think she is hideous – although I don’t find her attractive either. She has no sex appeal whatsoever.

    • lisa says:

ita. i see a nose with a little bit of face behind it

    • J.Mo says:

I agree with you. Maybe she looks like someone I went to high school with or something but there are things I don’t like about her appearance that I will keep to myself.

  11. whatsmyname? says:

That’s such a horrible cover. And guys probably find her intriguing because she isn’t a feminist and loves men.

  12. Rhiley says:

She looks like a gymnast to me- Kerri Strug/Mary Lou Retton perhaps. Plus she is kind of vapid which makes her even more boring

  13. Annie B says:

Given GQ’s older male demographic, I’d be surprised if many of them had seen Divergent or Fault in the Stars. I’d also be surprised if Shailene really beat J-Law or Scar-Jo in a vote among that demographic, or among any male demographic in general. However, I suppose it’s all about who you can get on the front cover, and I suspect Jennifer and Scarlett are well beyond covering GQ at this stage…

    • Alex says:

Not only that but her people and the studio (Lionsgate) could’ve pushed for the cover. Esp with Insurgent coming out early next year she needs the exposure. And Jen usually covers bigger mags like Vogue and Vanity Fair around the time THG movies come out. So Shailene needs it more

  14. aenflex says:

    No. Not attractive.
But good for her, I guess.

  15. Scri says:

I haven’t met a single straight man with an opinion of her other than ‘that budget Hunger Games girl’, ‘the weird hippy one’ or ‘who?’ Do with that what you will.

  16. shizwhat says:

I dont want to sound horrible but she has one of those faces that needs hair. She’s not ugly in any way but not everyone can successfully do short hair and she’s one of them. Plus she has such thick hair that would probably grow for years if left uncut. Im well jealous.

    • perplexed says:

Yeah, she has bad short hair. I don’t know if all short hair-cuts would look bad on her, but this particular one isn’t flattering. I never analyzed her face as much when she had much longer hair. I also wonder if her face is going through certain changes now that she’s in her 20s. Some teenage faces can suddenly change in weird ways as one gets older (not that she’s old, obviously).

  17. Jenna says:

    No. She’s gross.

  18. danielle says:

I like her, she is a good actress and even though she is not beautiful, she’s pretty.

  19. GingerCrunch says:

Ugh. Don’t get it either. My first exposure to her was when my daughter watched that show “Secret Life of the American Teenager”. Not a terrible show, but holy sh*t, was her character the most annoying, grating, whiny, awful thing! She did have a great head of hair, though and I think she reallllly needs it.

  20. Reese says:

I think she’s beautiful. Her eyes are gorgeous. That’s what I mostly look at. Her lips are a little too close to her nose, but other than that she’s perfect.

  21. may23 says:

    That neck, man!

  22. CK says:

I can understand it. It’s GQ. I highly doubt that they deign to listen to any of the words coming out of her mouth.

  23. Lucy says:

I like Shailene, but for some reason I can’t stand Ansel.

  24. Ciria says:

No I wouldn’t put someone who’s anti-feminist as “girl crush” on the cover of a magazine.

I must be getting old but she looks like she’s 12 on the cover.

  25. Reece says:

They took some patent male fantasy slapped it on her and it doesn’t work. At. All. Dark and smoky is not what made her, her. It’s not her persona.
    GQ Fail.

Yes I’m one of the few who actually still does like her.

  26. St says:

For me Shailene Woodley is one of those stars who you look at 10 years later and wonder: “Hey where did you disappear? You were such a big deal for a moment”. For me she is like one of those stars are suddenly in every movie for 2-3 years, on every cover and then vanish.

I still don’t understand why she is star all of a sudden. For me is boring to watch and has ordinary face. Yet she is suddenly in all those young adult movies that get money. I think that when her box-office luck will wonder off – she will quietly vanish in one year.

Simply because she is not that interesting to be movie star. I never read her interviews because I don’t care what she thinks and it’s not like she gives interesting interviews. Jude Law was way more interesting and bigger star. And at one moment he was in every movie. And then he just vanished from A-list status.

    • J.Mo says:

Hey hey hey Jude has been putting in stellar performances and winning awards on stage. I know what you mean but he’s addressed his relief at the options available to him now that he’s not leading man pretty.

      • St says:

I like Jude Law too. Shailene is not on the same level as him of course. Jude was bigger star by miles. But I mentioned him because he was everywhere, in every movie and them in one moment he vanished basically. Shows up there and there but not A-lister anymore. Same thing with Clive Owen too. Still don’t understand what happened to careers of those two.

    • ion says:

I agree. The farter is so much more interesting.

  27. Jessica says:

Whenever I read or hear anything about her, all I think of is Adventures in Babysitting. It’s the only other time I’ve heard the name Shailene.

And I find her slightly irritating. I recently saw Divergent and didn’t think she was anything special. But Theo James on the other hand – finally a YA movie adaptation that got the male lead right. Even though the two of them had zero chemistry.

  28. Lindsay says:

I find her face to be off and she always looks dirty

  29. word says:

That cover pic looks super photoshopped and airbrushed. She looks like a cartoon and not even human. Why…why do mags do this? She didn’t need any of that !

  30. Ally8 says:

I think she was cuter in The Descendants with longer, darker hair. As she gets older and with the blonde hair, she’s starting to remind me of Wynonna Judd.
