Benedict Cumberbatch thinks selfies are ‘a tragic waste of engagement’

bendy1

I don’t know how I missed this (because I have Cumber-exhaustion?), but Benedict Cumberbatch has a nice feature in the new issue of DuJour Magazine, the same issue with Angelina Jolie and Jack O’Connell on the cover. I’m including the DuJour photos in this post – they’re nice, but they were taken after The Terrible Haircut, so they’re not as hot as they should have been. You can read DuJour’s little interview with Benedict here – he’s just talking about Alan Turing, blah, etc. He once again compared the Bletchley group to The Avengers, which is still a funny comparison. It makes him sound like a Marvel wannabe.

Let’s see, what else? Benedict is scheduled to appear at the London Evening Standard Theatre Awards on Sunday night. I’m assuming he’ll shill a bit for his upcoming production of Hamlet next year, plus he’s supporting many of his friends in the theatre. Tom Hiddleston is nominated (although who knows if he’ll come), plus Helen Mirren, Carey Mulligan, Eddie Redmayne, Idris Elba and many more are scheduled to appear. And in case that isn’t oversaturated enough, on Monday night, Benedict will attend the world premiere (in London) of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.

Meanwhile, USA Today keeps releasing quotes from an interview they must have done with Benedict when he was in NYC last week. Go here to read the latest. There are some nice quotes from some of his coworkers (Julianne Nicholson adores him). When he talks about walking the TIG red carpet with Sophie Hunter, he says: “I wanted her to enjoy it. It was sort of a test run or something of that ilk. We’re going to be doing this for our whole lives, so this is what it’s going to be like. She was very cool with it and loved it.” Hm. I don’t even know what to say about this stuff anymore. He also calls the selfie obsession “a tragic waste of engagement…Enjoy the moment. Do something more worthwhile with your time, anything. Stare out the window and think about life.”

    This eggs benedict is overdone.

I like the top B&W shot. Where have all the Cumberbatch articles been? There has been a severe dry spell and your readership is clamoring for MORE. Pick up the slack, Kaiser!

    • Abbott says:

Yes, Kaiser! We’d appreciate a little hustle up on that.

    • janetdr says:

HaHa! I want. To take this space to thank the commenters who mentioned Starter for ten. We watched it last night and loved it! Never going to be able to hear “The Eye of the Tiger” again without that visual and that’s fine by me LOL

      • Lindy79 says:

Its such a good film and the soundtrack is ace!

      • MtnRunner says:

I loved Mac and Cumby in that film. I wish Ben could get more comedies coming his way. He’s got a knack for that.

      • Ally8 says:

Some kind soul put together a best-of-Cumberbatch in Starter For Ten:
        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V43udJ2nhMQ

I have to say, I saw that years ago and BC didn’t stand out for me as anything other than a very credible nerdlinger character. (Reminds me of a story Harrison Ford tells of playing a bellboy in the 1960s and a studio boss telling him he had no future in the movies — that when Tony Curtis played a bellboy, you could tell he was a star. “I thought he was supposed to be a bellboy,” Ford responded.)

Rewatching it now, BC is wonderful in that Starter for Ten scene where he gets weepy rewatching his loss the previous year. Powerfully tragicomic.

But yeah, he knows that but for the Sherlock breakthrough, he might have been stuck playing second bananas his whole life. At some point, though, he has to realize he’s made it and he can pick and choose his promotional features, not say yes to everyone who asks and try even his fans’ media saturation limits.

      • Janet says:

That clip is wonderful Ally8! thanks for posting

      • Alice says:

I love that film! I’ve watched it a couple of times – everone’s so good, but now I fast forward for BC’s part. That clip will save me a lot of time. Thanks for posting.

      • BoredAndExtremelyDangerous says:

Thank you, Ally8, for posting the link.

I’d never heard of this guy before I started reading CB (a complete fluke) just a few months ago. I’ve never seen him in anything and have never even heard him speak, so I’m interested to hear what he sounds like. Talk about a newbie… He only piqued my interest because he’s the spitting image of a fella my daughter was seeing.

    I couldn’t agree more.

    • Babalon says:

      Same.

    • Andrea says:

Selfies are just sad. I really don’t get it? Doesn’t Kim K and others have friends to pose for photos with or perhaps a friend to take the photo? Is this the way life is going? Do people really think: “It’s all about me and how great I look, no need to have any real friends, look at all the twitter followers I have of my selfies.” Ugh . . . when will it end?!

  4. Rusty machine says:

I like this haircut on him!

  5. PunkyMomma says:

We’re going to be doing this for our whole lives. . . “ Can I officially call him Otter Snob?

    • VanillaIce says:

Ego much? I guess he believes he’s going to be the famous actor he thinks he is right now forever. Also this ‘test run’ thing is odd, he was sort of ‘testing’ Sophie as his red carpet accessory or something? Like an ornament?

    • Lindy79 says:

It’s ambitious of him to think they’ll be doing anything their whole lives…

Also, test run? Are they attempting a world record?…would LFF not have been better, before they were engaged?
Oh no, better to have her on her own, marching down the red carpet with her nose in the air behind him.

    • 'P'enny says:

of course you will Benny #rolls eyes

      Sophie’s never seen again…

    • Alice says:

Another interview expanded on that quote a bit. He also said she could come along “if she wanted to.” A perfect out for her future absence.

    • LadySlippers says:

      •PunkyMama•

Not only that, but he assumes they’ll actually stand the test of time. #SweetButNaive

Alcohol my dearest? I brought a lot as I figured we’ll need it….

      🍷🍻🍹🍻🍸🍻🍷

      • PunkyMomma says:

@LadySlippers – dirty martini with anchovy stuffed olives, please. Have Colin shake, not stir. #OtterSellingSwampland

      • alice says:

Speaking of alcohol, maybe I never noticed it before in older interviews, but in a lot of the recent interviews they mention that he’s knocking back quite a bit of liquor. Any obvious reason???

      • moodgirl says:

I would drink too if I were in his shoes.

      • LadySlippers says:

        •PunkyMama•

Colin is dearest Lilac’s. Ummmm, I’ll have to recruit some Scottish or Irish talent…. But the Garden Shed is stocked with quite a few goodies (Tulip demands the best…so do I but I prefer blaming Tulip 😉). Scotch? Served by the Scottish Thunder himself?

        •alice•

Several interviews talk about how he drinks (and smoked) to keep his anxiety under control. My guess is he still needs it.

      • PunkyMomma says:

Oooooh. Glenfiddich served by the Scottish Thunder. So easy on the eyes. Will My Laird be serving in a kilt?

    • Oh Hey says:

….which together, their lives will be shockingly short – methinks she’s not into this crap….

      • Soothy says:

Oh she loves having her picture taken. On tumblr there were several pics of her posing (also doing the neck thing) for photogs.

      • lola says:

She LOVES it. Watch the video when they are exiting the NY hotel after the premiere and notice when she starts smiling.

    • delphi says:

      I agree…”otter” snobery. Buahahahaha!

(I work in retail and it’s “Black Friday”. Delirum hath descended.)

  6. Soothy says:

What does he mean by ‘engagement’ though? I’m guessing he’s not keen to sit down and have a chat with fans in the street, so what does he want? Of course, an ideal world means you don’t need to interact with strangers in the street at all, but his ‘let’s interact more meaningfully’ idea seems a bit of a convenient soundbite to me.

    • j says:

youd think, soothy, but he does seem to like to chat with fans for longer periods of time

      http://ioutilltheendoftheline.tumblr.com/post/58684471393

he was asked about the selfie as in take pics of yourself craze though

      • Soothy says:

        Ok, that’s cute.
I don’t think he’s misanthropic, I think sometimes he really loves to chat to people. I think it depends on : his mood, the environment, and the person.
He asked one fan who asked for a pic to join him for a fag not so long ago.
But he gives out very mixed messages. He’s human so of course he’s not going to be cheery all the time, especially if he’s been approached several times in a day, but is can’t make him out. I’m not the type of person to approach people I recognise anyway, but if I were, I can’t say I’d be comfortable trying to instigate conversation with him. I’d be afraid of getting the smaug treatment.

  7. ellesbelles says:

I actually agree about selfies, and willing to give a little that print interviews make it easy to sound rude.

A test run red carpet, like shes a new car. Smh. I think I know what the intent of the comment was, but way to sound robotic.

    • Rosie says:

It’s too bad he didn’t look too happy testing out his new car to the world!!

      • Ingrid says:

        @ellesbelles & Rosie: ITA 100%. LOL.

Ande selfies: I loathe them and for once agree with BC.

However, if he wants fans and adoration, he should just suck it up. From all of the problems in the world, people wanting to take selfies with you is the one to have. I would love to have that problem…

    • **sighs** says:

Selfies are awful. Do not understand that craze and can’t wait til it goes away.

      • Cee says:

        ITA with the selfie thing.

The last time I was in NYC, I visited The Top of the Rocks at sunset and was amazed by this girl who spent 25 minutes taking selfies, reaplying her make-up and making her hair look so and so before finally deciding her selfies were good.
She never looked at the view.

  8. Rosie says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if she showed up at the Evening Standard Theatre awards….coz you know she’s a theatre director and desperately need to network so she can get a nice job! I wouldn’t even be surprise if she showed up in that same Erdem dress!

    • Ingrid says:

She will be easier to spot in the Erdem dress, so of course she will wear it.

I believe she will be there. Unless Evening Standard Awards are too mainstream for her avant-garde excellence.

    • Lindy79 says:

I kind of hope she does show up in her Wheres Waldo dress.
I hope Erdem do a wedding version of it, she can wear that.

    • Alice says:

I thought her appearance in NY was a last minute response to all the “where is she” questions online and also for the U.S. Press. It wouldn’t be necessary to trot her about in London, would it? And if I were he, I’d be embarrassed to pull that in front of my friends and colleagues.

      • Ingrid says:

@Alice -I truly hope she won’t make an appearance because it will either be as awkward as the TIG NY or they will put on a show. Neither these options sound that appealing.

However it would be very weird if she didn’t show at ESA because she is supposed to be Successful!Theater!Director! (as we all learned from Harvey’s masterpiece “Sophie’s CV”) and ESA is the second biggest theater award in the UK.

The Hobbit premiere is another story…

    • moodgirl says:

I think she will show because they don’t want to go too long between sightings as it will raise eyebrows. That’s how the whole NY thing started; she wouldn’t have shown up if people hadn’t started asking questions. That’s why her hair looked undone.

      • Alice says:

@ingrid. I hope she doesn’t show at the Hobbit. Shouldn’t that be Martin’s night to shine?

      • Alice says:

@moodgirl. Speaking of sightings, why aren’t there now any “normal life” sightings in London – going out to eat, grocery shopping, leaving his house, etc. The paps know where he lives. With all the media attention you’d think one would snag a picture. Or are they even living together? Just ver weird.

      • Rosie says:

I think she just had really crappy hair and make-up artist…there was even a screen cap of the guy who did her make-up on SoGo! Not exactly something to be proud of. If she does attend either event, I’m hoping to see umbrella girl with her and Sodious head held slightly higher by a few degrees than previous pictures!! Honestly I’m excited to see how high it’ll hold up with each sighting and awards season ain’t here yet!!!

      • MissMary says:

I’m split on her showing up for The Hobbit prem mainly b/c HW has nothing to do with it. She may be at the ESA but… meh.

From the front car on the conspiracy train, I’m thinking we’re not getting any “daily life” pap sightings (or sightings period) because… and keep in mind I’m being catty…it’s not in their agreement. But you know, she’s *SO* busy and all, of course we won’t be seeing her unless she’s supporting him at a TIG event. *shifty eyes*

      • moodgirl says:

Maybe the continuous mentioning of how busy they both are is designed to explain why they would not be seen together. Damn they’re good.

      • MissMary says:

Someone on the red carpet can ask him where she is and he’ll either look wide-eyed and scowly, shaking his head ‘no’ (so he can tell Hello! the next day how busy SH was and just couldn’t make it but she loves and supports him to the same degree. Oh, wait, he’d say “The woman I proposed to,” wouldn’t he? Not her name) or he’d say “CHECK YOUR NOTES” and frown because he’s already mentioned how absolutely busy they both are and how she doesn’t have to come to an event.

      • Ingrid says:

@MissMary – Or my new favorite red carpet response from our PissyPants: “I can smell the dead fish on you” (from 2:46)

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8baF38tUPVo&list=UUY26xU0-avwTJ6F6TzUZVEw

      • MissMary says:

*sporfle* Oh my gods, that made me think of that scene in Silence of the Lambs where Multiple Migs spits “I can smell your c___” at Clarice.

  9. shizwhat says:

Ok here’s the deal. When I was 19 the best shot we had at a selfie was taking a picture with a roll of film and hoping to God it turned out whenever we had the time to get it developed. Most of the time it didnt turn out as I had wanted and I thought “if only I had known to straighten my head” or to “turn slightly to the side” and so on. Now I can do that, instantly. Its a new concept thats somewhat revolutionary. People abuse it and we’re all slightly obsessed with it but I love the fact that having a decent photo of oneself is EASY these days. Back in the day is was the luck of the draw! Now when people in the future see photos of me they arent limited to some photo from 1991 with me wearing a windbreaker and braces. If that makes me vain then I’m vain and Im not sorry.

    • Zapp Brannigan says:

      ^^This!

Co-signed by a victim of a misjudged fringe circa 1995. They were dark times.

      • Kiddo says:

But that is exactly what made old photos fantastic: spontaneity and reality. Candid shots rule, selfies drool.

      • **sighs** says:

Right, kiddo? And I can’t even imagine how much time people spend trying to get that perfect pic of themselves. The very few times I’ve tried my self esteem goes right in the toilet. Nitpicking every little detail about yourself.

    • tinyfencer says:

We’re not ALL obsessed with it, though. I would feel incredibly silly taking a photo of myself like that. I’m aware that I’m probably in the minority, but this is definitely a generational thing.

      • Charlie says:

Me neither. And I’m 21 so my friends try to take them constantly.
Although to be honest, my dislike of selfies also comes from the fact that I can not take a flattering picture of myself. I always end up looking high as a kite.

    • Linn says:

“I love the fact that having a decent photo of oneself is EASY these days.”

I agree with this, but at the same time I’m glad that it wasn’t so easy and cheap to take pictures of everybody at every place. There would probably be a lot more embarassing pictures from my childhood and teenage years if smartphones with cameras had existed back in the day.

  10. Mica says:

Like these photos, for the first time he didn’t look like a wax figure

  12. Lilacflowers says:

Who is this guy? I don’t think I’ve seen him before?

  13. Just me says:

“He also calls the selfie obsession “a tragic waste of engagement…Enjoy the moment. Do something more worthwhile with your time, anything. Stare out the window and think about life.”

This from the guy who photo bombed U2 at the Oscars on live TV in front of millions.

    No contradiction there. *Snort*

    • Soothy says:

So in a very roundabout way, he’s saying ‘f— off, don’t bother me at all’?

    • Lilacflowers says:

No, none at all. And he ignored Adam Clayton’s attempt to speak with him at the time.

      • Lindy79 says:

You NEVER ignore Adam Clayton’s attempts to talk to you, or anyone from U2.
        For shame Benedict, for shame!

      • Renee says:

BC ignored Adam Clayton? Another reason in my ever-growing list of reasons for me to not like BC anymore.

Every time BC opens his mouth lately, he sounds like a hypocrite and a snob.

      • lindy79 says:

I dont think it was an intentional snub but he ran off.
Its a bit odd he made no attempt to talk to them at any other stage during the night but hey ho..

      • Cate says:

I was just annoyed that he had U2 there in front of him and instead of just meeting them (ie. talking to them) he tried to better his personal high jump record and turned it into an internet meme. So there you go Mr. ‘staring out of windows’ Contradiction, I felt you could’ve made better use of THAT particular moment.

        Mr. Contrabatch it is…

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Renee, yes, Clayton saw what he did and tried to stop him, said something and moved a hand towards him, when he raced back to Karon. Adam did have a rather bemused expression so I don’t think he was annoyed with the photobombing, but BC just brushed by him. Larry the God was aware of it at the time too.

      • Lindy79 says:

@Cate. Yes I think that too. From interviews with them and him since then, he never actually talked to them which is odd.
I had no problem with the photobomb, I did think it was funny and as Edge said “he should play basketball” with that jump but it just strikes me as odd that he never used it to actually have a conversation with them.

This is why I think his relationship with Sophie IS affecting him and not just in the whole PR way. Its like when your friend is dating someone who is really into sport and you start hearing them talk about sport they had only a passing interest in before.

      • Cate says:

@Lindy79, totally agree with you on the relationship affecting him. I’ve been thinking this again and again, it’s why he doesn’t sound/act like himself either at times. He’s trying to be some perfect intellectual gentleman. But if this is the influence she has, I at least can wholeheartedly declare I’m very much not on team Hunterbatch.

And it IS weird that he never took the chance to talk to one of the U2 guys after that stunt. I know U2 bashing has been popular in 2014, but like you said it’s f*cking U2 indeed and I love them anyway. It’s his loss he didn’t ‘jump’ (ha) at the chance to talk to them. They’re lovely guys by all accounts, yes, even Bono, always time for fans (ahem) and you’d be lucky to have a convo with them. Even if you’re the great Cumberbatch. But of course octopus dancing is to be preferred these days… 😉

      • j says:

@lindy79: yes, he doesn’t appear to notice clayton talking imo. 3 people are talking to him at the same time and he’s answering some lady in front of him

imo he also turns beet red and tries to hide immediately afterward by running back lol

      • Lindy79 says:

It wasn’t intentional, he jumped and ran but they were at the Vanity Fair Oscar party, which is the one he was at so yeah, I find it a bit odd he didn’t go over to chat. Not like he didn’t have a reason to start a conversation lol

      • Isadora says:

Not speaking to U2 /not noticing Adam Clayton directly there on the red carpet is one thing and rather understandable. But if he met them at a later date I would have thought that going to them and kind of explaining the whole thing or apologizing (he DID take one of their red carpet shots for his personal PR action without consent from U2) would be the normal thing to do. Of course the Oscar stunt wasn’t in any way serious or harming anybody, but I thought that’s the polite and well-mannered thing to do.

      • EscapedConvent says:

It seemed to me he was embarrassed about that photobomb as soon as he’d done it. Maybe that’s why he didn’t speak to U2. He must have temporarily forgotten that he was on TV, at the Oscars, when he ran up behind them! Didn’t he mention recently that he does impulsive things that turn out to be stupid?

      • icerose says:

he was being interviewed on Norton I think and he was basically saying how he does not know what to do with himself on the red carpet and feels awkward. He then started to say something re the photo bomb and stopped, .Maybe he saw the incongruity between being awkward and shy and doing something which makes everyone look at you. But he has made so many excuses like I was to do something to bring them some attention to I was tipsy.

    • Lindy79 says:

I don’t understand the general selfie thing though, like endless pictures of yourself. So if he means that then #TeamJawsEyes even if he does sound totally patronising.

But if he doesn’t and he means in a passive aggressive way about fan selfies, when his friend Helen asked him for a photo with U2, so…did he not tell her a selfie is a waste of an engagement. “go look out a window Helen”

No he didn’t because he understood that it was important to her so he did it, just like as much as he may not understand them, they mean a lot to his fans.

      • Cate says:

Yeah, but I mean, he practically jumped over the moon twice behind them, everyone with half a brain could’ve told him that would turn into an internet meme. He could’ve just taken a normal selfie with Bono (that’s what Helen asked), but I guess an ordinary selfie is beneath him, as he gives away here. Don’t mind me, it already annoyed me back then. Never thought it was cute, am sure he meant no harm, but meh.

      • Lindy79 says:

I found it a little iffy on Fallon when he talked about it, he downplayed his interest in the band and skimmed in a line about how he was a fan but basically said he did it for her, yes he’s a fan but she was the one who (really, really, really) wanted the photo.
Whatever you think about them or their music, they’re f*cking U2.

Also, didn’t he pose for a selfie with Nick Cave??

      • Soothy says:

        @cate

I agree. It was attention seeking.
I remember at the time thinking, ‘hmm. . Bit douchey’

Little did I know he’d only just begun. ..

      • Cate says:

I haven’t watched Fallon yet (I know…), but if he was playing it ‘cool’ (his favourite word these days) I might not even get around to it. I’d get so annoyed, just fangirl a little Benedict, nothing wrong with that. And like you said in another comment, this is the guy that happily admitted watching X-Factor while binging on icecream years ago. He was w. Olivia still, guess he didn’t have to go all arty farty then.

And yes, he did pose for that Nick Cave selfie, but Nick Cave is arty & cooooolllll of course…

    • icerose says:

yes I find it hard to differentiate between photo bombing and taking a selfie. Selfie are great for single people who are out and just want a photo of themselves out side something special as a reminder, Photo bombing can be really annoying ig you are trying to take a group picture on a night out and some drunken 18 year olds just keep on photo bombing it.

  14. ukbound says:

I agree with him. I think very often we feel compelled to record things and we are not in the moment, enjoying them. I’ve thought this a long time, but others don’t see it.

When you take a picture, your attention is placed on your camera..

    • anony says:

I have also felt the same way. I like taking photos of things so that I have something to help keep the memory fresh. I usually try to strike a balance by limiting the time spent trying to record the moment to the first few minutes then the rest to just enjoying and being in the moment. Something are hard to record and best just watched. From my experiences fire works and dolphin watching have made that list.

    • **sighs** says:

I live on the beach, and I see so many people trying to take pictures of the sunset that they completely miss the actual sunset. Just put your camera down and enjoy it. Is it worth it in the long run to miss something special just so you’ll get a few likes on your Facebook post?

      • Linn says:

I don’t have Facebook and I couldn’t care less about likes on the Internet, but I sure love looking at old pictures I’ve taken. The few seconds it takes to take a picture a definitely worth it too me.

I also love to see pictures my parents etc took before I was born or when I was little and I’m glad they took the time to capture the moment. Same for friends I don’t see very often, because they live too far away. It makes me feel just a little bit more involved in their lifes.

    • Lindy79 says:

On holiday recently, we got up a few mornings to watch the sunrise, on the last day we took some photos. Not to post anywhere but just for us.

      • **sighs** says:

At least you got a few in to just enjoy. You’re very ambitious enjoying sunrises on holiday.
        🙂

      • Lindy79 says:

We never get to see them much, living near the city. This was a beach getaway so we figured, lets enjoy this because it’s gorgeous.
Also when you have the benefit of being able to go back to a giant bed afterwards it helps! haha

      • MtnRunner says:

I think it’s possible to strike a balance between capturing the view/moment and still enjoying it. My friends and I take selfies from the top of 14ers* and share them with each other later on social media. We spend maybe 30 seconds taking the selfie and a whole lot longer enjoying the view. Shared joy is double joy and I enjoy sharing spectacular visuals with my friends and vice versa.

While I deplore the selfie in the strict sense of just taking a picture of oneself for no reason other than vanity, taking selfies with friends while out together to remember the day is something different. I hope Ben realizes how important it is to some fans to memorialize the special moment of meeting him by taking a picture with him. When I was younger, I would have cherished a photo with my favorite celeb.

On the other hand, it may be his way of saying that it means more to him to chat for a bit (depending on his availability to talk, of course) than to just have someone ask for a picture and move on. That would be a lot less personal and satisfying. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt that perhaps he was referring more to this than deploring the simple act of taking a picture with fans.

*a 14er is any mountain over 14,000 ft (4,200 meters). Colorado has 54 of them.

      • **sighs** says:

I was speaking more of the people who are trying to take the perfect sunset pic for 20 minutes, literally the entire time the sun is going down. You have no idea how many people I’ve seen do that.

      • Lindy79 says:

        haha I get you **sighs**

People who take pics of food baffle me though, unless you’re a food blogger/reviewer. At least if it’s people you get a sense of what was going on in the photo instead of “oh, that looks like a nice way to present beef, now I’m hungry”

      • ellesbelles says:

@mtnr I want to go running with you! Im in the process of checking off the Tahoe rim trail and training for tough mudder

      • **sighs** says:

Lindy- I don’t understand the food thing either. Especially if it’s just your random dinner, with the requisite description. Just eat it before it gets cold. Stop taking pictures of it and talk to your family at the dinner table.

      • MtnRunner says:

@ellesbelles, good for you! Yes, come on down and run the Rockies sometime. I don’t do the mudders as I’m an ultrarunner but TRT is one of my bucket list runs. There’s a 50, 100 and 200 miler on the trail that looks amazing.

I’m off running due to an Achilles injury so I have time to catch up on my movies and chat here… can’t seem to do both in the midst of training.

      • solanaceae (Nighty) says:

Have to agree with you girls… enjoy the sunset, yeah take a pic to remember it, but just one… as for the food, I only do it if it’s a party, a bday cake or something special on holidays, different from the usual, daily food…

      • icerose says:

@MtnRunner My brother use to mountain ride and mountain bike (pedal) on his own and he would take both selfies and photos of what he saw and send them to us. It was a great way of sharing his experience with us, He use to run in BC and on Vancouver Island. I think he knew every trail there was in his area.

  15. Floribunda says:

Have to say, I’m with him on this one. Ditto taking endless phone videos of rock concerts, plays etc – life filtered through a lens is not real life imo.

That said, he’s not exactly well placed to criticise other people’s narcissism at the moment!

    • Soothy says:

Hang on, was he talking about selfies with him or selfies in general? If it’s the latter, then I’m 100% with him. Sorry, I can’t read his interviews first hand anymore, not until he reverts back to nonknobbery, anyway.

      • Floribunda says:

IDK – took it to mean selfies in general (as he was talking about not being in the moment) – like you I can’t bring myself to read the actual interview!

    • Oh Hey says:

Unfortunately Iphones and selfies and facebook have fed a whole generation of narcissists, everything is all about ME. I can’t deal with it, went to a museum with a friend who wanted me to take her photo in front of every exhibit, then offered to do the same for me. I said no way, not photogenic and no one really cares to see it anyway. She was puzzled….

      • anony says:

I totally agree. I’d don’t see why people have to put themselves in every one of their pictures as though they were the most interesting thing about it. If anything I feel you are distracting from the true beauty of the scene. Just let the picture be a beautiful piece of art, building, landscape or whatever it is. Don’t put your ugly mug in every scene! Or worse endless pictures of your significant other in scenes. No hate, just bores me and makes me roll my eyes. Those ones are best not shared with all 500 of your closest acquaintances.

  16. AlmondJoy says:

Of course taking selfies is kind of silly. There’s nothing wrong with it, though. I find it interesting that people are actually annoyed by the fact that others take pics of themselves. It doesn’t hurt or bother me any.

    • FingerBinger says:

It doesn’t bother me either ,but people taking selfies at a certain age seems kind of ridiculous. Kim Kardashian is too old to be taking selfies and then to put out a book of her selfies is even more ridiculous.

  17. **sighs** says:

“She was very cool with it and loved it”.

    That was her loving it?

    • Ingrid says:

      LOL.

Also, being cool with something and loving something isn’t even nearly same thing, is it? Which was it, Benedict?

BC has gone from saying contradictory things in different interviews to saying them in one sentence.

    • Cate says:

‘She was very meh and meh about it’

There, corrected it for you BC. You’re welcome!

    • Toodles45 says:

Actually, I do believe she loved it. Judging by the way she looked, I’m between her just super proud of being by BC’s side or looking smug, like “Har har fools, he’s MINE”.

      • Tifa says:

lol. I actually think she was trying to act like how his ex girlfriends posed in photos with him. Both Olivia and Anna had that smug and resting bi**h face, Sophie looked pleasantly fine in the beginning, then her true face came out!!

      • Alice says:

@tifa. But in the pictures with Olivia, he usually looked like he could eat her up. Really happy and relaxed.

  18. tasha_nat says:

I get what he’s saying in terms of living the moment vs. taking a selfie of the moment. But the rest of that sentence….”Do something more worthwhile with your time,”? Ugh. He annoys me so much now.

    • Lindy79 says:

The same could be said of anyone who goes to comic cons, or going to the movies. Lately he is sounding more and more like someone who is trying to be like their partner.
I know he’s always been into the arty farty stuff and nothing wrong with that but he seems to be mentioning things like this more and more.
I have images of them both sitting there reading and sketching by candlelight, while someone plays the harpsichord in the background.

This is a guy who once said he watched X Factor ffs, and plays a cartoon wolf.

      • Soothy says:

I do find the idea that she finds her form of her ‘art’ superior. When we are talking about:

-rolling around as a mime artist in a field (drinking a cup of tea mime?!)

        – rolling around wearing a pregnancy suit at a function

        – rolling around with an octopus

      • Lindy79 says:

I have zero problem with him saying he likes reading, sketching or staring out a window pondering the meaning of life but…
Its the way he says it, like there is a negative attitude to anyone who does something he doesn’t like or get.
Everyone has their own way of living and decompressing, what works for him might not work for someone else, and as someone who makes a living out of acting in shows, movies, plays that people pay to see (which could be their way of relaxing), not to mention people paid to see him at Oz Comic Con then maybe he needs to sound less……..judgmental about the more superficial things people enjoy.

      • Soothy says:

Like you say..He watches the xfactor.
That’s one of his most disappointing statements for me ever tbh.

    • Whovian719 says:

Soothy don’t forget getting dry humped in a field. Because nothing says art like that.

      • Soothy says:

I’m pretty sure I loosened some sinus issues laughing at that mime thing. I mean, who does the painted face mime artist thing still? I thought that died out after 1991. It was like a terrible sixth form project that all went wrong.
And the humping was hysterical. Who in their right mind would have watched that back and thought..yep.

I tell you what her ‘art’ reminds me of .. Anyone who’s seen the incredible and underrated ‘SPACED’ with Simon Pegg. And episode of that, David Walliams played a performance artist called Vulva. In fact, have a link..
        https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=180z62AhGVI

      • Ingrid says:

        @Soothy -ROFLMAO “It’s not finished!”

Confession time: I haven’t seen a single thing Sodious has done (except of course this enGAGment performance piece which is horrendous). I cannot bring myself around to watch any of it, the humping in a field gif and the secondhand accounts have been enough.

      • alice says:

Is it at all possible that BC is unaware of her video oeuvre(a nod to her Frenchiness)? If so, shouldn’t his friends introduce it to him before he becomes a laughingstock if he actually marries(ugh) her?

She also appears in a music video with a half-naked fat guy roaming around London looking for chicks. She wrinkles her nose at him. That’s her complete performance.

      • lindy79 says:

Spaced is one of my all time favourites and yes i did think after the octopus thing that it reminded me of “ITS NOT FINISHED………….

        ITS FINISHED”

  19. Who ARE these people? says:

Been following the discussion and have this to say, comparing Cumberbatch to another charismatic and far better-known actor (who could actually say with confidence he will be famous for the rest of his life):

Brad Pitt has abundant street smarts but is not that articulate.
Benedict Cumberbitch is extremely articulate but doesn’t appear be that street smart.

However, Brad Pitt seems to finally know and work within his limits. He’s been around longer. Cumberbatch might not be there yet. That’s all, they’re both good and charismatic entertainers. Their choices in women is something completely individual to them. People should not be judged for their personal needs.

  20. Felice says:

The ‘the rest of our lives’ comment bothered me because it seemed like that he wanted to retire early. But I mean, we all have off days. I really hope Sophie punched him for the ‘test run’ comment. Fake or not that is really rude to say.

Speaking from someone who has met him before, you have to pick your moments when to approach. We were at the same gallery and I just said hi and he asked me if I enjoyed the exhibition and I said that it was cool. I feel like if he is in good spirits and not working then it will probably be fine. Or maybe he just liked that I didn’t ask for a selfie lol.

Also I did think of “Old man yells at cloud” at the selfies comment.

    • j says:

imo maybe unpopular opinion i think he just wants to be treated like a person, you know, not like an odd object everyone takes a pic with when they visit a landmark. which i get but unfortunately not realistic

  21. 'P'enny says:

oi Benedict, “stop being a bore and get off the Avengers patch. It’s Hiddles gig”

    [sniggers]

Well, if Eddy and Benny are shilling the theatre awards on Sunday, then Hiddles is definitely not going. Right now? would he really want to be in same room as those big ego’s right now. Especially if he doesn’t win. And, as for Idris Elba, he might tempted to lamp him for leaking his Loki in AoU.

Can I just say, that Loki has been been called back to London in Jan with a few other Avengers to do reshoots. #excited.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Hoping that doesn’t interfere with anything he may have planned on but hasn’t announced = like Richard II.

  22. T.Fanty says:

Thank God we have Cumby, to save our non-book reading, selfie-taking selves from ourselves. Hail to the multi-cultural-gay-bashing guru of the universe.

(I presume that’s the response he’s looking for)

  23. Madly says:

    He sounds like a jackass.

Have to ask this, between him and Tom Hiddleston, who do you think is a better actor and who will have longevity?

    • Ingrid says:

I think they both will have good, long careers.

But BC, regardless of what a jackass he has been lately, is far superior as an actor. He’s there with Olivier, Meryl and Day-Lewis. Hiddles is *very* good, but not in the same league.

      • Oh Hey says:

I don’t agree that Hiddles isn’t in the same league, maybe not YET. He has a remarkable ability to completely transform himself into the character. I don’t think there is one role I’ve seen him in where I see Tom as we know him from interviews, etc. I see the character he’s playing, 100%. I just think he’s five years younger than Cumby and hasn’t caught up at least on the film side, but once he finds his vehicle he will be as good if not better than the A list actors.

      • icerose says:

I think Tom is the more interesting mercurial actor actor and always pulls surprises out of the bag even when repeating Loki, Benny will always turn in a solid performance but given the right script he shines.
But to me they are very different actors. Tom is about pacing, passion and he really pulls out the big emotions. He can move very quickly from one emption to another and stay true to the character Benny is more about slow steps building towards key moments.
I do not think as yet we have seen what Tom is capable as he is still finding his direction.Benny has found what he is good at and tends to stick with it which is not to say it is not good.

      • Madly says:

No way. He is NOT there with Streep or day-Lewis. Good grief the exaggeration on that comment. Are you kidding me?!

      • jammypants says:

        neither are in that league

      • icerose says:

@Jimmypants at the moment to true

    • koko says:

I think that they each shine in individual roles. Some will be “Oscar” worthy and some not so much. I like that they take “chances”. As for longevity, they could both work a long time because they don’t seem to be “married” to film.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Let’s compare him to actual contemporaries like Cillian Murphy and Colin Farrell, both of whom are good actors, both of whom have far more varied careers. Of the three, Murphy will have the most longevity.

      • icerose says:

I think Cillian is great but he still has a ways to go. But his capacity to play diverse roles bodes very well for him. Not sure about his Shakespeare.
Farrell has never really impressed me as most of what I have seen him in feels very similar and he often lacks pacing but I like his intensity
Tom I think has the potential to be the best but he needs to keep his stage work up because it stretches him. I do think he has a gift for humanising Shakespeare and bringing out the text and he has bags of charisma
And lets not forget Ben Wishaw who is potentially the best of the lot including Benny. Seeing him on stage in MOHO brought home just how brilliant his dramatic timing and depth of performance is. And he has an amazing sighing voice as well

      • Madly says:

Why aren’t they contemporaries? He is juggling rumors about a marvel character, Tim played one. They both were in a Shakespeare play and the Hollow Crown series. And they are near the same age. They are contemporaries, so your theory doesn’t hold water to me.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Madly, I do not see them as contemporaries because there is nearly half a decade between them. Cumberbatch, Murphy, Farrell, Fassbender, Hardy, and Bale are contemporaries. Hiddleston is not in that group. His age band includes Mison, Whishaw, Lloyd, and Redmayne. Patrick Stewart has done Shakespeare plays, was in The Hollow Crown, and is a Marvel character too but that doesn’t make him a contemporary with Tom, does it? I really do not understand this constant need to throw them at one another. But, since you insist, if you need someone to portray a posh, emotionally-repressed guy, who may or may not have a burst of anger towards the end, then Cumberbatch is your guy. Nobody else has nailed that one character as well as he does and he has played that character in everything I have seen (yes, I have seen Sherlock. Yes, I have seen Star Trek.) However, I do prefer more range in my actors and Tom has shown me that range. I keep waiting but to this date, Cumberbatch has not shown that to me.

  24. lunchcoma says:

I actually buy the engagement stuff, and even I’m getting tired of these interviews. He doesn’t have anything new or interesting to say, and his comments are getting fairly annoying. I think it’s time for Keira to do a few more and for him to take a step back and let us all take a breather.

  25. elle says:

I am so tired of this pretentious a-hole. for the love of god, can this website stop posting multiple articles (on a daily basis might i add) about this guy? and yes i know “if you dont like him why did you choose to read an article on him?!?!?! #teamcumberbitch?!?! xoxoxo”, i didnt read the article, i just clicked on it to express my exhaustion of this over-saturation. just chill on the constant barrage of otter boy please.

  26. OhDear says:

The open mouth pose in the black and white shot, lol. Though the one of him laughing is nice.

Agree with him on the selfies, btw.

  27. Lucifer says:

NOT Taking selfies, reading books nourishing thing to do. How much pedantic can this guy be? I dnt knw what the conversation is about having a busy day but he sounds horrible with each interview. Its our lives let us decide what to do with that. If u’re so much in hate of technology stop using mobile,tv,cars. No u won’t do that. But ppl who are using other aspects of technology gets shamed by u. same with social networks. He does not use it so its bad.Is it Right? I ask u. Who decides his script and his opinion. I want a cork in his mouth. PLEASE.
If he is so obsessed with selfies he should deny them rather thn BOOING the young ppl. GRANDPA much?

  28. allons-y alonso says:

Says the guy who photobombed his own wax figure….Batch, there is a difference between acting clever and being clever. I don’t think you know that difference.

  29. ellesbelles says:

Now that im properly awake, I can add to my shared loathing of selfies with mr Cumberbatch.

My mom recently returned from a funeral for her friends mother, and the deceased youngest brother and his wife, both self absorbed narcissists had posed in front of the casket and took cheesy selfies. At a funeral. I cant.

  30. Lilacflowers says:

This movie, for which he is doing so much promotion, despite being so busy working that he supposedly has no time to promote it, when and where does it actually open? Originally, I heard it was scheduled for yesterday and we planned it for our family’s Thanksgiving movie but that was changed a while ago (we saw Foxcatcher – bad move, Harvey) and that today was opening day but none of my local cinemas, not the huge multiplexes or the small art film places, have it scheduled or are even advertising it any more.

    • gg says:

Opening today in NYC and LA only. Opens wider over the next few weekends

    • tasha_nat says:

NY and LA are getting it this weekend, the top 10 US cities are getting it Dec 10, wide release Dec 19.

I wonder how much interest will taper off by the time of the wide release.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Wonderful. So it will hit here while Wild, Inherent Vice, Exodus, Top Five, Annie, The Hobbit, Night at the Museum, The Gambler, and Mr. Turner are all jockeying for screens and people are dealing with holiday shopping, holiday parties, school holiday pageants, and performances of The Nutcracker, The Messiah, Black Nativity, White Christmas, The Santaland Diaries, A Christmas Carol, Amahl and the Night Visitors, and whatever else hits the stages at this time of year? Well done, Harvey! At least you’ll avoid competing with high school football games. And here I have tomorrow evening free for a movie. Whiplash, here I come! Could have been TIG, Harvey. You chose poorly.

      • MtnRunner says:

I sure as hell wont be seeing TIG the week of Dec 19… it’ll be Mr Turner if it’s with in 75 miles of my house.

    • icerose says:

The New York Times liked his performance but also mentioned it is part of his ” his repertoire of socially awkward intellectual prodigies, real and fictional” but overall they were luke warm.
“Just a few years ago, this film might have felt radical and counterintuitive, like a daring, inspired leap from one era to another, or an excavation of the hidden history of the present. Instead, it has the shiny, hollow ring of conventional wisdom. It’s kind of perfect, and also kind of stale.”

“The only support I need” TWILTWIPT supporting BC the best way she knows how: by not being there. So surprising. But there are a few Smiley!Batches. Coincidence?

    • Lucifer says:

Thats the bst support u can get ingrid. Granpa told us to think about life. Maybe she is thinking abt ife @home and writing a dissertation on it. Granpa ll check it in the night

    • Lucifer says:

is it totally necessary to put “newly engaged” in every goddamn thing?

    • Cate says:

It’s the Daily Fail, I should’ve known, but the blurb in the ‘fashion finder’ bit:

“She is the woman on everybody’s lips. A celebrity overnight. Sophie Hunter that is and if you haven’t heard of her before, you will have now. She is marrying the one, the only, Benedict Cumberbatch. Sigh. Another one bites the dust.” *rolls eyes out of sockets*

But they do call her Erdem dress’ style ‘moody florals’, bawahahahaha. Just the way Benedict likes his florals, hehehe.

      • Soothy says:

Oh jesus. Are they being sarcastic? This is beyond embarrassing now.

      • Felice says:

A celebrity overnight because of her “SO”. Wonder how t-shirt feminist Benedict feels about that.

      • Soothy says:

She’s not a celebrity. Nobody cares. Most people will have read one of the many, many interviews he’s so privately given but I can bet that a very small percentage would actually have registered who she is or what she does. A TV actor getting engaged is NOT big news and I’m so tired of the demented media trying to sell it to everyone. The only people overthinking it are either us, because we’re mystified or the crazy obsessed nannies making cakes toppers of him standing next to her or painting pictures of them.
Go and look at the window and do something interesting or whatever the hell he said. Pity he didn’t think so metaphysically when all this BS first occurred to him.

      • Cate says:

        I hope they’re (secretly) being sarcastic, but I think it’s idle hope…

      • Nya says:

        “She’s not a celebrity. Nobody cares. ”

People on Celebitchy, especially the ones who make hundreds of comments on these articles, sure do care. You seem to be one of them…

      • Ingrid says:

I’m truly amazed that the Daily Fail haven’t jumped on the octopus video yet. All maybe they are saving it (not unheard of, TMZ is famous for saving bits for the optimal time)

      • Soothy says:

        @nya

Well, if you’d care to read the rest of my post, I did actually mention that we are one of the few people who do care. I also mentioned why.

      • anon says:

Do you have a link? I tried to find the article but couldn’t. Thanks. And wow. Unbelievable.

  35. sopa says:

Why should we care about what benadryl cumbersnatch has to say? I’m sick of seeing this pseudo wisdom spill out of someone who goes to red carpets as part of his lifestyle.

Like we can say the same to you crumblypatch. “Stop going to red carpets, attend humanitarian events.” Or something along the lines of “Live in the moment, stop going to photoshoots. Live in the now.” We can certainly just regurgitate this back to you, “Do something more worthwhile with your time, anything. Stare out the window and think about life.”

Stop thinking your life is one incredibly full of meaning and worth. And get over yourself, I’m so tired of this.

I hope it is PR, but I don’t know anymore. The only thing I see is a dysfunctionality from all the angles I look.

@Lola -Well, if it’s PR, it might his passive aggressiveness showing. He doesn’t agree with the methods, but very reluctantly goes with it.

But ITA, the relationship is dysfunctional regardless of what it is and I truly hope it’s PR because all other options seem so much worse.

      • MissMary says:

Honestly? If you want to go with the HW-lead PR campaign theory… He’s known for “making” his “stars” do things like this, and is well known for being litigious, manipulative, and generally horrible. He wants a certain image, a certain narrative, and will have it come Hell or high water. There’s many articles and first hand accounts about him doing some messed up shit in the name of getting “his” movies and/or “his” stars “out there.” So I can see him telling BC “you want to play this game? Fine, you ditch the crazy scrapbooking fans, stop being a goof, no smoking or drinking in public (same as he did to JLaw) and you couple up PRONTO because we need a serious, romantic lead to capture Middle America and their movie dollars”.

      • Lindy79 says:

I always felt that Nicholas Hoult and JLaw getting back together just around award season and then breaking up quietly afterwards was PR,
The difference was they *had* dated seriously for a few years before that and they were making XMen so it’s possible they did just drift back together but the timing was suspect.
Considering she was wheeled out while quite ill by all accounts says a lot.

      • blended says:

most of the quotes you are reading now came from the same roster of interviews he did over a few days in LA and NY. so yes he was grumpybatch when he did them. personally i think he is grumpy because he doesn’t like the fact that he has to sell a fake engagement, and contend with the regular pressure of a campaign.

      • Lucifer says:

yeah i dnt know what to think abt his attitude anymore. the more he talks the more I cringe

    • Anony says:

    • Green Eyes says:

      I’m aboard!

      Choo-choo!

Oh, and would you mind making a stop at Hiddleston Junction? I plan on getting off there…

    • tasha_nat says:

still onboard! join me in the dining car, the brunch is divine.

    • gracada says:

      I’m onboard!

      • anon says:

Gotta admit I’m on the crazy train with oh hey. I think she’s preggers as well- hence no smoking and talking about being safe. Also explains quick engagement and peculiar behavior. Also interesting comment from KK ‘re BC getting everything he’s always wanted. I still predict a Dec wedding during the holiday.

      • MissMary says:

THe main reason I don’t think his alleged avoidance of his vices has anything to do with her uterus is b/c HW is known for making “his stars” drop public smoking and drinking during Oscar campaigns, esp if he is trying to position them for a certain narrative like “America’s sweetheart” (JLaw) or, in this case, “nonthreatening romantic leading man”.

  37. Lucifer says:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ta4LIf7ilEY is it BC’s voice. feels same to me

    • Ingrid says:

I think it’s BC too. There have been journos reporting that it’s Andy Serkis but IMO it’s BC.

I also got the spooky feeling that the Sith lord is BC but that might just be my imagination playing tricks. But I want that lightsaber ASAP.

EDIT: Might there be two different voices? First BC and the second Serkis? Hmmm..

    • Lu says:

      I don’t think so, myself.

  38. Claire says:

Sorry asked this up thread will make it its own post:

Updated head count for who thinks he will/will not eventually marry Sham Wow?

    • Ingrid says:

      No.

(UK doesn’t have prenups hence he would be mental to marry her just for show and/or after such a short relantionship)

      • lola says:

        @Ingrid
But he seems to be mental. Grand desperation could be explanation for such weird behavior and disappointing choice of the “lady” .

And if UK doesn’t have prenups … what is with alleged split between AJ and BC over prenup disagreement (or I misunderstood sth)?

      • Claire says:

I didn’t know that! As in they’re not legal? Wow, he needs to run fast and find a woman with a viable career.

      • Felice says:

Oh so if they don’t have prenups then the reason for him breaking up with AJ is false.

      • Ingrid says:

They are not legally binding and the supreme court has upheld only one in 2010.

Yes, the rumor that AJ & BC split over prenup is most likely BS.

EDIT: There is/was apparently a proposal to change the law but I don’t know where that stands currently. http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-26357609

      • moodgirl says:

No pre-nups in the UK? That’s surprising.

      • MissMary says:

I’m not sure where the AJ/prenup rumor started but I always thought it was more likely down to his work schedule and her not wanting to wait at home for the better part of a year while he filmed STiD and The Hobbit and August: Osage County since she has her own job and career she can’t just futz off and leave behind.

      • Soothy says:

Nobody would know why he and Anna split up. That was just conjecture and gossip.

      • lola says:

about the prenup: that’s what I call a fantastic news:-). I hope he is as frugal as it’s been gossiped.

    • lola says:

      @Claire
If it is going to happen it is going to happen soon (the latest spring 2015).
I am sadly starting to think that it will happen. So: the faster it happens … the faster she’d show her true face (if she hasn’t already) … the faster it would end.

Either way (marrying or not) it is not going to last – that I am sure.

      • Claire says:

But Lola isn’t she already showing her true face? Those ny photos show someone who isn’t exactly the nicest or warmest person, or someone who’s there to support her partner (she seems more concerned with looking good).

      • lola says:

        @Claire
We do not wear the pink glasses. BC might, if he really fell for her – she had to lure him in the relationship with some sort of a talent (the only one present – so hidden and jet so powerful).

      • moodgirl says:

Maybe she let him dry hump her and he went hump looney. 👀

      • moodgirl says:

@Claire – Those NY photos showed a nasty witch and a man who, IMHO, could never stand up to her. Especially after seeing the last photo where she appears to be dragging him along for an inevitable spanking. She makes him look like less of a man and if he knew that we can see that and laugh about it he would cry. He actually allowed a woman to lead him while he looked at the ground. And she appeared to enjoy it.

He needs to cut her loose not only to save his career but to save his soul as I believe part of his shitty attitude comes from being exposed to her. When he returns to his normal self he will find a nice person. Right now even WE don’t like him.

Edit – Maybe she behaves this way because she is in the driver’s seat and answers only to HW.

      • Grace says:

I really don’t get the PR angle. How can they make him appeal to middle America by building BC up to be some arrogant, uptight arsehole? He’s not even likeable at the moment. Could it be possible they will change the strategy as the race progresses?

      • MissMary says:

@Grace: They’re going for the stereotype of British actor that’s popular among some sectors of society stateside: Refined, snobby, mature, serious… But it’s coming off like a caricature of Colin Firth and Daniel Day Lewis mixed with a huge shot of wtf.

      • lindy79 says:

We think that because we’ve followed him and can see the change but people new to him will just see Downton Abbey bloke in modern times.

      • ellesbelles says:

The tone of the NY photos bothered me for several reasons only peripherally related to my annoyance with the engagement.

-the body language is ice cold
        -they both lookmiserable

-the photo where she appears to be haughtily dragging him made me grossly uncomfortable.

I can only speak for myself, but I am a 50/50 kind of gal in terms of being passive and assertive. I would feel so odd if I was acting like a statue at my fiances premiere. If I was truly over the moon for him, I’d be looking at him, not off in to space wondering if I had left the gas on. This was not a test run, this was a trot out. I dont know if Ursula the sea witch is a good director. Her acting skills are tragic that she couldn’t even pretend to be even moderately in love.

      • Claire says:

        Ursula the sea witch ftw.

Also time for a rundown of nicknames:

        Sanka
        Octopussy
        Sodious
        Ursula the Sea Witch
        Sham Wow
        Ice Queen

        Anymore we’re missing?

      • Felice says:

        Captain Hair Toss

      • Tifa says:

Is it possible that SH throwing her face up in the air just a habit for her?? It makes sense since Naomi from cbweb tweeted about it during hay festival and I saw the video of them exiting the cinema and the moment she got out the door was that; hair tossing and face in the air. That’s exactly the attitude of the posh popular girls in highschool and I really don’t like it. She may look like the delicate english rose but her behavior tells a different story. It’s no wonder why BC doesn’t want pap or sneaky pictures of them together, hence the cloak and dagger! I think BC knows her true colors by now and there is no turning back for fear of public humiliation at another failed relationship.

      • Alice says:

@tifa. That pose makes it a lot easier to look down your nose at the rest of the world, the 99 percenters.

      • Felice says:

Oh a post down below reminded me of another thing I’ve called her: Artpop.

      • lola says:

        @Felice
Mine is going to be: ARTPOOP. Thanks for the idea.

      • Felice says:

        @lola
Ooooh, you’re right to not use the actual name. Mother Monster shouldn’t be dragged into this, her “art” actually rakes in millions.

      • Toodles45 says:

Hey guys, what do you guys think about this profile about SH from 2010? The writer describes her as “strange, intense and far too serious” to be part of celebrity culture and “resisting the urge to get a hit, instead creating something challenging and different at the expense of popularity”.

        :/

        http://whistness.quazen.com/arts/sophie-hunter-arrives-on-the-new-york-stage-with-ghosts/

      • moodgirl says:

“I think BC knows her true colors by now and there is no turning back for fear of public humiliation at another failed relationship.”

@Tifa – What sane person would marry someone who makes him as uncomfortable as Ben looks to us? He can either be humiliated now by breaking it off before the wedding or really, really be humiliated later by divorcing and losing half his stuff. At one point he couldn’t even say this woman’s NAME, could only look down at the floor while discussing her, all while admitting that he has dated her a number of weeks.

      • Claire says:

@moodgirl was it ever confirmed he said her name? I thought there was speculation it was an interview where he didn’t say her name was altered to make it that way.

      • moodgirl says:

@Claire – I think it was confirmed that the original interviews were later updated with her name added. When your SO’s name can’t pass your lips and you have a negative physical reaction when you talk about them…..what can you say? Something really isn’t quite right here. Really, really not right. Really.

      • **sighs** says:

I’m really hoping my theory below is correct, because at this point it’s the only one that doesn’t make him look like a total tool. Right now I’m still firmly planted in the pr sham-get rid of the crazy fanbase-he really is just a pompous twit who will do anything for an oscar camp. I hope I turn out to be wrong.

      • Cate says:

@Toodles45, I think your comment got lost a bit, but I read this review of her director debut with Ibsen’s ‘Ghosts’. Those comments about her are quite interesting. They do make her sound very humourless. Like alarmingly so. The heart wants what the heart wants or something like that? Or HW wants what HW wants? 😉

Anyone else read that piece? Thoughts?

    • gg says:

No way in hell will they get married! Breakup between Oscars and Hamlet

      • MissMary says:

Word. I’m on this car for the conspiracy train.

      • blended says:

i’d be truly shocked if he married her, and also disappointed that he’s marrying someone he can’t be bothered to even look at.

      • Lucifer says:

i want to be in this car, but i don’t know. I think he might get some serious prick frm HW and marry her b4 oscar. if they dnt get married b4 oscar thn m here folks

    • Just here says:

I think they’ll get married. Benedict is determined to be married. I truly wish we had SOME inkling of what his family really thinks.

They’ll be divorced in, say, 2 years. Still can’t shake that this whole relationship *looks* (as an outsider) really, really ‘off’.

    • Renee says:

Unfortunately I think he’s going to marry her. I hope I’m wrong but I think he’ll go through with it.

      • moodgirl says:

I think he is nuts to even be seen with her in public. He has to know something is wrong.

      • **sighs** says:

I don’t know what I think. I’m kind of with missmary about the breakup, but part of me is with you, Renee. He’s been so weird and bonkers lately that it almost wouldn’t surprise me if he did. Kind of a cut off your nose to spite your face thing.
Methinks he’s keeping friends and family at arms length right now. I don’t know why I think that, but…. Here’s to hoping they can at least have a conversation about it with him.

    • tasha_nat says:

I think he will marry her, and he’ll stay miserable (or, as he puts it, really really really happy), but his pride won’t allow him to admit he’s wrong and split. He’ll take the upside of having babies and enjoy it as much as he can. He’ll learn to live with it.

      • Alice says:

Please, NO, NO, NO!! Then we would have to live with the nannies oohing and aahing, oh, they’re so happy, we were right all along crap. Just NO!

  39. Lindy79 says:

Imagine if he is nominated and wins…the awkward kiss and hug they’ll do. That and the mentioning of “the woman i love who I proposed to”, the speech timers will have to give him extra time.

    • Grace says:

Oh no, the awkwardness gives me pain just by the thought of it…

    • Ingrid says:

I notice he didn’t thank anyone at HFA. Maybe he didn’t want to thank her, so he didn’t thank anyone? Hmmm….

I think we’ll get the “family and friends” line if he starts to win more awards this seasons…

      • lindy79 says:

Given the amount of press the engagement has gotten and his talking about it, it would honestly look SO odd if he didn’t thank her along with his parents.

ETA: if hes nominated i believe he can bring a few people. They dont sit with them but the F&F are given preferential seats

      • lola says:

        @lindy79
If there is a moment when he should be true to himself it should be during the thank you speech: thanks to the family (parents, sister&her family, close friends), co-actors, director, maybe HW, but not her. It might look odd (more odd things have happened: husbands have been forgotten), but it would be a far greater insult to his loved ones if he thanked her along them.

        @Ingrid
“Maybe he didn’t want to thank her, so he didn’t thank anyone?” That was what I thought if it. And convenient afterward apology: “I forgot a half of things I was supposed to say. “

      • gg says:

Honestly, he should be thanking people who helped him while he was making the movie, right? Or people who have *always* been there, like parents. Not all that unusual to forget a recent WILWIPT…….

    • Alice says:

I think he’d take Wanda before he’d take her.

  40. Linz says:

Benedict is attending The Hobbit Premiere on Monday in London.. Should be interesting.. lol

  41. ellesbelles says:

I finally caved and watched a bit of her stuff on YouTube. All I have to say is… okay…

Maybe I’m too mainstream, but I didn’t… get it.

The only thing I would feel bad about, if she isn’t part of the machinations (I believe she is) would be the sudden interest in her weirder stuff. Lady gaga does it better, and profits from it to boot. But she is used to garnering attention for her work, so shuffle off squidwardina

  42. Kazlock 1307 says:

I’ve looked at the pictures…watched the video clips…analysed the body language. And come to a conclusion…

    It’s f****d up big style!
Even when they touch, they don’t actually ‘touch’.There’s a distance about it.I thought I saw them make eye contact, then I realised they were actually looking across each other to photographers!
Whatever it is,I hope they don’t marry…my feeling is it would be a disaster!

    • moodgirl says:

It’s obvious that they are extremely uncomfortable with each other. Other than the PR scheme that fits this situation like a glove from start to finish, I don’t know what he is trying to prove.

  43. Dalovelee says:

I get that all these interviews are designed to help him gain footing in that race towards the Oscars and he wants to come across as the next best things to the Royal family, but why all the pompousness. I thought he was cool and down to earth now he’s being Mr. Highbrow. As for the future Mrs. Benedict, hmm this sounds like they won’t last. For one thing who is she… For another she’ll soon tire of being just known as his wife.. What else does she do? Has she no career or just being the soon to red carpet Mrs. Smiley Cumberbatch? His ego, career demands will get to her. Let’s see.

  44. Koodles says:

After a glass of wine, I just realized what this whole situation reminds me of. I don’t know if any of you have watched this movie called “what a girl wants”, it has amanda bynes and Colin firth. Anyway, during a part in the movie Amanda’s character is trying to act how her father and future step mother/grandfather expects her to act. And she looks absolutely miserable. She refused to play with a puppy, how can you refuse a puppy? That is how benedict looks and acts. I know that dorky, lovable guy is there somewhere, but, he is forced not to come out:( like I said, glass of wine.

  45. Alice says:

I was looking at The Guardian of 11/5/14, reading the comments re the engagement and I ran across this gem. It was posted before the U.S. press tour and seems very interesting. Enjoy.

“We (a friend and I) saw them outside a theatre one night. I have never seen two people look more miserable. Probably they had “let’s face the stupid fans” faces, but certainly they did not look happy. Or cheerful. Too geeky for happiness?”

    • blended says:

good find. i’m sure there are lots of people out there who have seen them out and about. i so want to hear more stories of how they act when they think no one is watching.

      • tsmiv says:

“You look sad when you think no one can see you.”
While everybody is saying he seems pissy or bitchy, all I can see is sadness. He just looks so sad to me. In the Reel Pieces (92St Y) video, I kept thinking he was going to cry at any second.

      • Soothy says:

Just watched reel pieces and while lovely to hear him actually talk at length about AT and the film for a change, he does look very nervous, jangly and fragile.
For whatever reason, he was struggling. I had an overwhelming urge to cuddle him.

      • gg says:

Could have been the Ballyturk performance at the NT. The one with Anna Wintour in attendance, the one where (according to a SoGo poster) Ben and Sophie exchanged all of two sentences and Sophie eventually fell asleep

      • MissMary says:

I honestly wonder how many times people saw them “together” at an event and didn’t realize they were supposedly “together”, given how they look so miserable at worst or disinterested at best when snapped together when it’s not a pap/promo pic.

      • Ingrid says:

Someone somewhere (SoGo?) pointed out that they did go to theater a lot together.

You know what’s great about theater dates? You can be seen together but you don’t have to actually talk to each other.

        *conspiracy theories everywhere*

      • Ingrid says:

@tsmiv -Forgot to add: Glad I’m not the only one who noticed his very emotional state at 92Y. That was a man near his breaking point. (And he did start to cry during the final scene part although he gathered himself very quickly)

      • Soothy says:

Aw. At what point did he cry?

      • Ingrid says:

@Soothy – At 43:00-ish. His voice breaks and he has tears in his eyes so I would categorize it as “starting to cry.”
        (SPOILERS)
        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSnFhU5T6Wk

      • Soothy says:

Aah, my wifi cut out before the end. Just seen it. I can see why that affected him.
Just seeing him say that choked me up too. God that film and the legacy of that man clearly meant so much to him. The press push of his private life clearly isn’t his idea. After seeing that interview, I’ll categorically say that 100% now.

      • Ingrid says:

@Soothy -Yes, I almost cried as well. He truly loves Alan and I agree. I really think if the enGAGment was real, he wouldn’t have overshadowed the film and would have announced it later. He’s not that naive as to just deciding to announce it on a whim. If I was him and I got engaged, the first ting I would do is call Karon and ask “what is the best way to handle this?” That’s what he pays her for.

Secondly, since this I’ve seen him saying almost the exact same thing in different interviews and he’s not that emotional. *Something* happened before that Q&A. It was taped after POM premiere and that Tumblr PissyBatchiness and he went from angry to emotional within an hour. The next day was TIG premiere.

(Maybe Harvey called and said: Release The Octopussy!)

      • Soothy says:

So this talk happened on the same day as the POM premiere and tumblr q&a?

      • Ingrid says:

        @soothy – IIRC , yes.

      • blended says:

i actually thought he was about to cry during the HFAs. he looked so dejected that night.

      • blended says:

i actually thought he was about to cry during the HFAs. he looked so dejected that night.

i actually thought he was about to cry during the HFAs. he looked so dejected that night.

    • Claire says:

Does he get hounded when he’s out at the theatre though?

Maybe they’ve/he has been desperate to be papped so he can start making headlines in the leaddup to campaign season, and when it wasn’t catching steam, voila they got senyorita to start carpetbombing the tabs, and the Edinburgh strangeness, etc.

Just a theory, like any other from your claire…

      • Lucifer says:

maybe alice ws saying about the theatre at NYC where fans were scattered around.

      • MissMary says:

I’ve heard of/seen the sneaky pics some folks have taken but have never heard of him being hounded at theatre outings…

      • Claire says:

@Lucifer: No, the comment was on the Guardian website on 5/11, where two people saw them at the theatre in the weeks prior. Who knows…maybe RIII?

      • Claire says:

@MissMary, yeah that’s what I thought too. This whole lack of chemistry thing does my head in: it’s the one thing we can point to as REAL in all this.

      • Alice says:

@Lucifer. Nope, not in NY. This comment was on The Guardian online site on November 5th, before LA and NY where he looked so obviously unhappy/pissy. I don’t think he was hounded in his hometown, this was someone seeing them together, looking miserable even before the engagement. And reporting it before all this gossip about fakery started. That gives it a bit more weight for me.

      • Lucifer says:

my bad did not get it.
        Posted this cmnt thrice 🙁

  46. jammypants says:

I was so disappointed in not being able to see TIG. It’s released today but not in my city. We ended up seeing TTOE and it was quite good! I was so happy to see Harry Lloyd in it. I hope we can see TIG soon.

    • tasha_nat says:

It’s annoying that with all the press going on, there wasn’t even a whiff of saying it was limited release on November 28. How is TIG going to stock up with the holidays? It’s not exactly a happy holiday movie, is it…

  47. lola says:

Just wanted to share (saw it on SoHo):
Gambles comment on SH’s FB (I love you and need to hear your voice) is gone.

    • ellesbelles says:

That tumblr is going to shove me into first class on the conspiracy train lol. It is nice to see the photographic evidence all corralled together

    • MissMary says:

I picture some intern doing a spit-take when seeing the FB post. “Oh my god, I missed one! I am so fired!”

    • Claire says:

      Gobbles

    • Alice says:

Wonder if he heard her voice when she was in NY? (Did she ever return to London?)

      • MissMary says:

Shhhh, don’t ask that where PR can see it! Otherwise we’ll be subject to “pap” (*cough* set up *cough*) pics of them looking like they’re siblings in a family photo, stalking out of a shop and trying to smile.

    • Cate says:

SO weird. Worst move ever to delete it. Or ask him to delete it. Because why bother if it was a friend and the comment was completely innocent? Everything on the internet is permanent anyway, screenshots people! *Waves to PR*

      • Toodles45 says:

Yes, very weird and it just gives weight to the jilted lover rumor. Buuuut, let’s say it’s an unrequited love situation–it’s not entirely her fault if she chose Ben. I’m sure most of us have been in a situation with a guy friend who wanted something more and the feeling wasn’t mutual. It could be either or situation, either she dumped him for Ben or this Gambles guy was pining for her.

      • Soothy says:

Siskin has a gf, I’m pretty sure. Brittany something.

      • Cate says:

All kinds of scenarios are possible of course, apparently he deleted or set his FB to private and did not just delete that single comment. He must’ve been pestered, but I could’ve predicted that. I don’t know what they expect otherwise. It isn’t pretty, but it’ll happen if one’s in some way connected to someone like BC. Unfortunately the disappearance of that particular comment looks quite shady whatever it’s reason. Naive on his part.

  48. Lucifer says:

Gambles’ comment on Sophie Hunter’s FB profile picture has been deleted.
    Yes, it has! Interesting……..

  49. Veronica says:

He always comes off as so pompous to me in interviews. He’s much better on camera. And where is this whole anti-selfie culture even from, anyway? Are people under the impression humans being vain is something new? Do we not have hundreds of museums filled with portraits that people PAID painters to do of themselves?

  50. Claire says:

    Hi ladies.

Tally post from two polls above:

14 people onboard the ‘this is PR/fake’ train. (100% of people polled).
    4.5 people think he’ll marry ArtPoop; 4.5 think he won’t. (50%/50%).

Interesting if not bizarre and divergent opinion between the questions. That means approximately half think their relationship is for PR AND he’ll go through with a fake/set up/Hollywood marriage (choose your terminology for this sort of thing).

I had to go halvsies on the second one because one person is on the fence. ::sighs:: 😉

    • Claire says:

We are missing a good number of others who regularly comment here, though (for both polls).

      • Renee says:

Claire, you can count me in as thinking the engagement is pr/fake. However I’m still believing he’s going to go through with marrying her, sadly. It’s like he lost a part of himself by attaching himself to this woman. I agree with what many of you said upthread, he looks miserable and there’s something so strangely “off” about them. Whatever this situation is, IMO, it does him no favors. He doesn’t look happy and in love. He looks like someone who rushed into a poor decision and is trying, and failing, to make it seem like a good decision.

I hope she doesn’t show up for The Hobbit premiere. I really don’t want to see all that awkwardness or see them try and put on a fake show. Not sure which is worse.

      • HBIC says:

Well, I don’t think you can definitively say if he’s going to marry her or not, because no one really knows. Yes, he’s trotting down that path, but who knows? He could come to the realization that he shouldn’t marry her and break it off. He has a choice. Have some faith.

I think we are all hoping he doesn’t, but it’s up to him, really. All we can do is sit back, watch the show and hope he makes the right decision.

If I could say anything to him (and I hope someone on his PR team reads this and passes the message along): Keep looking. Don’t settle. You are too good for that.

      • Felice says:

I have a feeling that if it ends they won’t make another article about him being bad with love but more about how it was her fault or the fan’s fault.

      • HBIC says:

        @Felice
        I think you are right.

And for some reason, when it ends, I keep thinking he’s going to come out of this smelling like a rose. And a lot of negativity is going to be thrown Sophie’s way (probably because people are starting to catch on to her ruse).

Don’t know why I think that, but I do.

      • Alice says:

I am on the please, god, no train. Maybe I’m delusional, but I think he could do SO MUCH BETTER. Are there no modern day Julie Christies or Charlotte Ramplings? Are all the Amals taken? Some musician I never heard of got KK. John Krasinski got Emily Blunt. Can’t Benedict Freaking Cumberbatch do better than this snotty, untalented hack? Someone who obviously makes him unhappy? I hope his family steps in at some point.

      • MissMary says:

@Felice: They won’t outright blame fans but will couch it in things like “his life was just so high stress compared to what she was used to” or “they wanted very different things, career-wise” or “she loves him but can’t handle the pressure of being the partner of such a famous actor”.

      • blended says:

the fandom will be the scapegoat. mark my words. ‘she loves him, but couldn’t take the online bullying’ or some such nonsense.

      • Renee says:

@HBIC Yes, he doesn’t need to settle for this. I hope he slows down and thinks about what he’s doing.

      • **sighs** says:

Blended- yep, the final nail in the coffin of his “crazy” fanbase.

      • Felice says:

I’m betting first hypothetical pap pics post-announced separation will be a canary in mouth smile while accompanied by a blonde (may or may not be niece but general public doesn’t know her).

      • MissMary says:

@Felice: Either that, or with Adam or Loo or a “known by fans” friend so it can be “aw, He’s moving on but not TOO fast” if they want to retain any of the “gentleman serious actor” PR attempt.

    • Kazlock 1307 says:

      Hi.Definatly PR enGAGment.
Beyond that I have no clue wtf is going on.
In my heart i hope the whole thing is a sham, because if this is real it’s seriously screwed up.
His whole demeanor has changed since it was announced.

      • Claire says:

Kaz, you already voted the first time! Renee and Cate included to bring the first vote up to 15.5

    • Cate says:

I’m a ‘halfsie’ too, I don’t even know if I want it to be PR or real. I think I’d prefer real, because then he’s just human and fell for someone who doesn’t work for him. It’s just hard for me to accept that he’d be so Hollywood and do this entire thing for PR. But it’s entirely possible. And it of course could be both real AND also used for PR purposes. It’s all UGH. But like most of you I do hope he won’t go trough with this all, I hope he comes to his senses before they marry. The person one should want to marry should make you a slightly better version of yourself (or at least not change you for the worse), call me a foolish romantic, but that’s what I believe. He needs someone lighter and funnier who doesn’t bat an eyelid when faced with everything and hugs him on the red carpet instead of looking like the 21st century’s answer to Lady Mary demeanor wise.

  51. **sighs** says:

So, I have a crazy theory borne of too much thanksgiving feasting. What if it was a setup from HW camp/octopussy, and he didn’t realize until it was too late? Maybe she figures she knows him and can get in good with him. Is totally fawning, and “no, of course I don’t like you for your fame! I don’t want to be seen with you at all, that’s not why I’m with you.”
He gets in way too deep and doesn’t realize til the ring’s on the finger that maybe it wasn’t as real on her side as he thought, but now he’ll look like a massive idiot if he backs out now.
I know my brain is still on food overload.

    • Renee says:

**sighs** That’s a pretty good theory, I thought of something similar myself. It’s all a big set-up or some huge performance art piece that HW/octopussy concocted??

Yeah, I probably had way too much Thanksgiving feasting as well. I’ll show myself out now..

      • **sighs** says:

Ha! I wasn’t thinking art piece. More concocted showmance. Though I think your theory might be better. Life as art installation?

      • Renee says:

Something like that, yes. Maybe SH would get off on that. Honestly, when the engagement was announced, I thought I had been dropped into one big avant-garde art exhibit. Like It was some weird alternate reality thing.

i hope the old version of Ben comes back eventually but I have my doubts. 🙁

      • Claire says:

Sadly I think the inverse is more likely, if not more than likely

    • Lucifer says:

i like that theory. Get rod of the ring we won’t say a thing . “IT NEVER HAPPENED BENNY”
the rest of the world will sympathize with him. I see no trouble

    • tsmiv says:

That’s one of my numerous theories, as well.

    • **sighs** says:

I’m backtracking on my theory….it would mean that at some point he was actually in love with her, and based on all the stories of them being out together (falling asleep at the theater and exchanging 2 sentences) and the pics (obv no chemistry) that’s kind of a no go.

Never mind. Back to my original full out pr sham train. Still unsure about an actual wedding though. Is he that desperate for awards? Idk.

      • blended says:

i don’t think he was ever in love with her. at the french open, he couldn’t care less that she was seated next to him. he’s still never been photographed or videotaped looking at her. it may have been a casual relationship, but with very little emotional connection.

      • HBIC says:

My theory is that they had a relationship (a casual one at best) and she started pushing the engagement thing, probably as early as September (I’ve read too many things where he indicated he was single… I don’t think the relationship became real until after LFF). He begrudgingly proposed earlier this month, probably because he thought to himself “Why not, she’s the closest thing to what I’m looking for, and I don’t know if I’ll ever meet the one”, and then he put the announcement in the paper. No ring here – I don’t think he bought her one (loaner, loaner, loaner).

HW encouraged him to use it as PR, and he agreed. Then, I think they broke up! And then he was stuck shilling this relationship (and she was dragged by force to NYC). So everything he’s been saying press wise is what he wants in an ideal relationship. And he’s just inserting her name here and there to make it look real.

Who knows if they got back together or not. Time will tell. But if the fan reaction and his sour demeanor are any indicators, I don’t think this is going to work out.

If he’s smart – he’ll put the break up announcement in the paper in January, and save himself from having to give anymore cringe worthy interviews when Oscar season is in full swing.

Damn HW and the PR, Ben! Do what’s best for you! Don’t worry – your career will recover.

      • Lucifer says:

        why did they break up?

      • HBIC says:

I don’t know. Probably because they don’t really love each other? Or maybe they want different things?

Or maybe she’s unsupportive of his career? Could be. She was barely dressed up for that premiere (her hair and makeup looked like crap) and she didn’t even show up when he arrived in LA for the HFA’s.

        Hmmm… the plot thickens.

      • moodgirl says:

Really girl, you have to ask? Just look at her. I get the impression that she would feel that most people in life are beneath her. Haughty and judgemental. Anyone not from her social class isn’t worthy of her time or presence.

She couldn’t even pretend to support him he needed her, instead appearing in NY like she just didn’t give a shit. Can’t we all support a friend when they need us? I can get along with almost anyone and I probably couldn’t take her for more than a few minutes. And I believe a lot of his shitty attitude is rubbing off from her.

      • Lucifer says:

his shitty attitude his catching up from her. I totes magotes agrees with this line.
woman is snooty to tell the least. in FO I never thought of her as a “person of interest”. TBH she looked kinda older thn him in those pics. So i thought some old colleague.thn BAM SGF rumour. I m still having hard time getting over with her face. I dnt wanna body shame any one but she just reeks of snobbery. I hate that face. Not NOT PRETTY, just basic. Plain as a white papr

      • Sunflower says:

Nah. I’m with sighs. Pure pr. I don’t think either of them are interested in making a casual relationship serious when they have so much contempt for the relationship.

      • Claire says:

Ah HBIC so glad to see you back here. Post more!

      • tsmiv says:

        @Lucifer
“TBH she looked kinda older thn him in those pics”
That’s exactly how she looks, so serious and lacking any sort of humor. I agree that her attitude may be rubbibg off on him. Part of his appeal is his youthful enthusiasm and that seems to have disappeared of late.

      • Ingrid says:

        @tsvim – +10000000!!!

The humor. That’s what bugs me the most. She doesn’t seem to have any sense of humor, especially about herself. Very typical among the artsy-fartsy crowd. BC used to be able to laugh at himself but now that’s gone.

      • Alice says:

@lucifer. @tsmiv. And when he’s around her, he looks older and more worn. Then, with Keira, candids w/fans(the restaurant pic), etc., the years fall away. Being around the noble, delicate beauty is causing him some serious stress.

    • lola says:

My original theory was that he thought the relationship was real up until after LFF when he was notified it was going to be used for PR spin (necessity of an engagement). And he realized afterwards what Artpoop&connections have been planing all along. Maybe they knew BC would never agree to any of it if for him it wasn’t somewhat real. That would also explain the cleaning her CV after the news broke. And more importantly why he was so full of rage and pain in LA. If engagement was the the plan all along and BC agreed to it I am quite positive he would never be so disrespectful of Artpoop. He’d play along and I don’t think we’d see such mess from him. In the NY pictures she seamed to be absurdly content and BC looking to the floor in defeat. I’d say he is the fly in her cobweb.

  52. Ingrid says:

    Deadline:
“The Imitation Game is looking to register a great Black Friday take of $177K. The period drama about World War II British mathematician Alan Turing looks to open approximately $100K higher than 2010’s The King’s Speech which collected $355K at four theaters.”

And this, ladies, is the reason why (1) you start with a very limited release and (2) this PR clusterf*ck had to happen. Excellent results.

(Ps. A lot of censoring happening here today, anyone else?)

    • Lilacflowers says:

Trying to figure out which version of math results in $177K being approximately $100K higher than $355K? According to my math, it is actually $178K LOWER, but I was never good at math. Although I did use a calculator for that one. Had it opened with a slightly broader release to include more major cities, 8 people in my family would have bought tickets for it today. Instead, two of us are going to see Whiplash, four are going to see Dear White People, and two are going to see The Homesman.

The decision to release it later, when all the other movies I described higher up on this thread are also released AND when everyone is in the midst of holiday crush and madness, will make it far more difficult for me and many others to see it in a theater and I was hoping to see it in a theater because the actual story interests me.

      • Ingrid says:

The 177K is only from Friday so the entire weekend will be higher than kings speech. And this way they get brilliant theater averages and build the momentum.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Build the momentum to be crushed in the middle of the holiday season. As I said, I would have gone to see it this weekend with a large family contingent. Pushing back means I very likely will NOT see it at the cinema. BAD, not brilliant, business decision.

      • Mathilda says:

Who cares if you are going to watch it or not?
You are not the center of the universe.
No one here is. You are like 40/50 haters.
        Better if you don’t go.

      • MtnRunner says:

@Lilac, I’m sure others would have stormed the cinemas to see it as well if they had been able to.

@Mathilda, that comment was uncalled for. No need to get snippy and call someone names when stating a perspective that you don’t agree with.

I respectfully disagree that Harvey et al WOULD CARE if she and others didn’t see it, based on the reason provided. He’s got millions to recoup.

    • Lucifer says:

      yes. with me. happened.

    • Alice says:

My response on thread #50 was put on approval for a good, long while.

    • Sunflower says:

      Yup

    • Soothy says:

Nannies don’t fill a theatre/cinema, Mathilda. In fact he’s quite understandably wanting to shake them off. I can see why; they’re utterly insufferable and suffocating.

    • gracada says:

I went to see it at the Angelika in NYC today and it was sold out as were the next two showings.

  53. Tifa says:

Ugh!! As much as I enjoy reading gossip about the whole enGAGment here and on SoGo, I wish people would respect some boundaries on their privacy. Sure we could come up with baseless theories and speculation but screencapping an entire private facebook page account just to rub it back in the PRs faces is NOT cool!!! It reminded me of the leaked mailscare adress. That was very dirty, whoever did that. It’s this type of behavior that makes Benedict soo PARANOID when it come to his fans. And then he goes out on a limb to out fans crazy behavior and you guys get all pissy and criticize his every move. This just isn’t fair. We don’t need proof of anything!! Lets just watch from the sidelines…without getting too involved. Ok?

    • Felice says:

..I don’t think this is as bad as the mail scare. They aren’t showing his address or her address. They are just showing that they don’t believe it. PR/BC’s team has no obligation to look at those pages and yet they do. They could just let people think what they want but they still change their strategy whenever someone points out something that seems inconsistent.

      • Tifa says:

you’re right, it not as bad, but the thing is if we already knew his PR checks on these sights why the need to gloat about such irrelevant info as that? Now his people are gonna advise her to keep everything on her fb private and maybe even ask her to take down her page til this whole thing blows over!! I wish some people would use their brains…we already don’t have that much info on her and to take away that one source is only gonna make it harder to make sense of things.

      • Cate says:

Even if this didn’t happen, I can assure you she’d always end up setting everything to private or even deleting in no matter of time. Having a public private FB account as the partner of someone like BC just doesn’t work. Not in this day and age. There will always be fans that step out of line and leak stuff. Even with private accounts. Still happens with Olivia’s private twitter for example.

      • lola says:

        @Tifa
His address is not for public/fan to see. And his house is not for someone he doesn’t know to visit. Period. Every sane person knows that.
If something is written on a public FB page is like being written on the outside of the house. Every one can see it. It is as simple as that. If Gambles (or whatever he is) wrote that it means she completely cut him off (otherwise he would be able to express his love&wish over the phone). And, no, it is not an irrelevant info when seeing how negatively her influence has changed BC. If people close to him read this hopefully they would talk to him and prevent future mistakes (if this is actually a real deal).

    • Cate says:

Invading someone’s privacy isn’t okay, but it’s quite easy to set a FB account to private? Even I, a very non-famous person have the right settings down. General public or friends of friends can’t see nada. Only people approved by me. So that’s just plain ignorance on Ms. Hunter’s part. (And that’s why it’s not the same as so called ‘Mailgate’, I still don’t know if that was legit or not. But it’s not the same. This could’ve been easily prevented.) Or intentional. Who knows?

P.S. And I wouldn’t even post such pics on a social media account if I was her. I’d be that paranoid. And quite rightly so. You could always mail friends or just set up a private (password protected) personal blog. At least that’d be a bit safer than FB.

  54. Cate says:

Btw, I totally forgot to mention Ms. Hunter’s Wuthering Heights Facebook photo during yesterday’s selfie discussion. It obviously wasn’t a selfie (her arms aren’t that long…), but it is still a self portrait posted on a social media platform just after the engag(e)ment was announced. So Benedict can of course think and say about selfies whatever he wants, but I hope he shares his opinion also with his beloved, ahem. Because it doesn’t matter if you shoot your own pic or let someone else do it and then post it online for friends and the general public to see. It’s all looking for a bit of attention. Because you want to show off a new dress or because you want to show off an artsy shot of your newly engaged self. (And maybe he even was the photographer, IDK. Yikes.)

Anyway, Benedict did selfies too, never mind it were his friends posting it to their social media accounts, like his pics with James Rhodes and his NYC friends back in the day. Guess everything was okay then still. And Sophie appears all over her friends’s social media too. And has her own Instagram and FB accounts. Maybe first take the log out of your own eye and such…

    • Lucifer says:

      whats her instagram id?

      • gg says:

        chassechasse, set to private though

      • Lucifer says:

chasse means hunt in french. LOL, she translates her name in french in her IG id. how much more pretentious can she be?

      • Tifa says:

let’s not forget her now deleted fleur–fleur tumblr account: Florals – if BC had known sooner how much she loves them he would have run away from her a long time ago!

      • gg says:

The fleur-fleur is still there, under another url. It’s just an overinvested fangirl, not SH herself.

    • MissMary says:

Yeah I was wondering how he reconciled his own long list of selfies with his apparent philosophy on them. Or is it another case of Dr Benedict and Mr Cumberbatch where, in a week, we’ll read him saying how much he loves selfies and thinks they’re great fun.

      • Cate says:

Really, he’s always suffered from foot in mouth syndrome, but recently he truly has been taking it up a notch and it indeed has turned him into Dr. Benedict and Mr. Cumberbatch. He shouldn’t blabber so much because he seems to be suffering from temporary amnesia at times and disapproves of things he’s done himself in the past. Oh Benedict…

      • MissMary says:

I mean, it’s one thing to say “Yeah I used to do x but decided it’s a waste of my own time”. Okay, rock on. But he’s rapid cycling through likes/dislikes, one week saying don’t say Cumberbitches, next week he’s calling female fans (and his own fiancee?) CUmberbitches, he’s taking selfies out the wazoo and now they’re plebeian…

      • Kazlock 1307 says:

        MissMary….
He’s turning into a pretentious t**t!Just like Miss Stickupherarse!!

I still find it very strange that ,other than JR,no one from his side has commented.

      • MissMary says:

Apparently Caitlin Moran retweeted a link about the enGAGment the day of (but just said congrats, which struck me as odd because she will go ON and ON about BC if you just look at her funny, no prompting required), and Adam posted then deleted a link about the enGAGment. No further comments made.

      • Felice says:

Caitlin Moran is first and foremost a journalist so that was moot imo. She’s not really a friend either.

      • MissMary says:

Wrong spot for the post! Sorry!

  55. anon says:

Ok-can someone link the original tweets from Cumberbatchweb regarding Sophie flicking her hair. And does anyone know why she was following her to begin with?

    • MissMary says:

Cumberbatchweb isn’t following SH (neither is her personal acct). She apparently sat behind her at some event and didn’t know who she was, asked around, and made the hair flicking comment in response to the info it was SH. Well before the enGAGment though.

      • Soothy says:

No, she saw her at Hay. Cumberbatchweb is just a fan who made a fansite. I think some people mistakenly think she’s part of his ‘team’ for some reason.

      • MissMary says:

She’s friends (on twitter anyway) with Helen and she apparently knows Karon IRL (but I think that’s more of a Karon knows who she is, not “hey, we’re buddies! we share so much info!” thing). But due to her contacting his reps often for info and posting it, I think she comes off as being more “in” with BC and his representation than she really is.

      • gg says:

Cumberbatchweb is an “unofficial” fan site but it’s as close as he has to an official site, and Naomi who runs it is in regular contact with his “people”

      • Soothy says:

Yes, but all they relay to her is official work info, personal appearances etc. she’s not privvy to anything else.

  56. Lucifer says:

new IG pic of pointybatch is out in a kitchen in Winchester

  57. ellesbelles says:

I’ve got to second the thanks to whomever recommended Starter For 10. Now I’m remembering why I put up with my boss calling him Cucumbersammiches. I like this Benedict a lot. a lot a lot.

  58. Scarf Girl says:

These are really rhetorical questions that I want to throw out there.
    1) if this is all a PR relationship, how disappointing would that be for an actor who seemed to be a goof in his best moments?
    2) if this is not a PR relationship and is real, how disappointing is it to see someone shill their private life for a chance at an Oscar? Because this is way beyond what Hathaway did for her Oscar.
    3) I visited the EB (and I am assuming now defunct) tumblr blog regularly but did not venture onto other blogs (except SoGo which is still an odd place and thinking it too is not a safe neighborhood ) until today. What are these people taking? For real. On either side of the BC fandom.
    4) what kind of scary person runs a Twitter account that only posts pictures of SH? And where are they getting some of these pictures? How much digging do you have to do to find these pics and what is the ultimate goal? I really don’t want to know answers to those questions. But some of those pictures don’t appear to be lifted from public events, and that is creepy.

That is all. I am going to have some wine while I bake a strawberry pound cake. If I post later, forgive any inconsistencies (such as me confusing Rita Hayworth with Rita Skeeter; alcohol induced brain farts happen at my age.)

    • Claire says:

      Agree on 1 and 2.
On 3, I think some of those posters are young girls who are a bit frantic about this whole thing, which is why they sound a bit out there.

On 4, that lunatic is the second mystery of this whole saga and is less likely to be solved than the first one. I wish someone could closely monitor that account and see if they get the photos before anyone else does. If they do, the theory she is working on behalf of Daisy Buchanan, and possibly BC, to float the PR of them as a couple, will carry more weight.

Someone on here made an excellent post. Paraphrasing: “imagine no engagement: where would TIG’s coverage be today?” Do the same with this twitter account: imagine no senyorita: how much coverage in the tabloids would Daisy Buchanan have gotten prior to the engagement? she would have come out of left field all of a sudden: that coverage helped buoy her media presence so the tabloids/the part of the public who pay attention to BC had something to go off of in the announcement. if this wasn’t deliberate, it sure was convenient. And it’s continuing to be. If you can keep track of the non-public photos, it would provide great clues, I’m sure.

Who benefits? Follow the money. That is, unless you believe this is true, pure love with no other motives behind it.

I think I just got it. The proof of the enGAGment.

    The Times notice:
    1. He said he didn’t have time to call everyone: indicates hurry.
    2. He said he wanted to normalize the situation: indicates planning.

These two don’t match. And when stories don’t match, they are lies.

    • Claire says:

Good catch, Ingrid. I’ve thought about it a bit, tried to come up with alternative explanations where the two are not contradictory, and you’re right. Clever girl, you!

    • ellesbelles says:

I looked at that announcement for ages and could not figure out what I wasnt seeing. I think youve nailed it on the head!

    • Lucifer says:

all his recent statements contradict each other. but we’re smart we ll get the idea. u know what i mean? 😉 😛

  60. Claire says:

Back to the nickname topic. I have the perfect one for her: Daisy Buchanan

    • Felice says:

That is giving her far too much credit.

    • Zazie says:

@Claire: that is an interesting thought. . I think that SH really is someone he would have liked to be together with when he was young, but girls like her would not even look at him. Now he is famous and wealthy enough for her. He put her on a pedestal, I really think he is that naive and believes he is the lucky one. Still trying to make it work.

      • Soothy says:

        @zazie

Sorry, but I really can’t see anything about SH that would propel her to the level of ‘someone that he would’ve wanted to be with when he was young’. What exactly is it that’s marks her out for you in that sense?

      • Claire says:

Hi Zazie, to quote Felice in another post, you’re giving her too much credit. Personality and looks wise she is no great catch and she only seems to attract emotionally unstable art types. As for class mobility, the big difference between him and her is her parents have floated her “career” almost into middle age and has skirted by with their money without making her mark on her industry, while BC has worked his ass off to get to the top. I doubt his parents supported him well into adulthood, if at all

      • Lucifer says:

@soothie i think zazie means octopussy is Regina George!!
        😉

      • Zazie says:

@Soothie and Claire: first please excuse my English…It´t hard to find the right words!
What I wanted to say is that I think BC thought a long time that he is not attractive. And I think that he might see SH in a different way than we do.
BC tends to be insecure, SH definitely is not. He has difficulties to say NO, she hasn´t ‘(I guess). Maybe her seriousness and arrogance towards others make him feel safe, like a contrast to his own personality.
Please dont get me wrong, I don´t like SH at all! I can see nothing that would be endearing. But I do not believe that it´s just PR, I think SH has something BC likes or thinks he needs. Of course its not good for him and will not last very long.

Well, ES Awards are tonight so if we are lucky there will be many glorious photos of the beaming couple looking very murderous.

Bc/sh relationship song: the smiths’ girlfriend in a coma

      • Lucifer says:

        omg.. i hope u r wrong ingrid

      • MissMary says:

IDK–they have an “out” set up with his comments about how “if she wants to come”. I’m cynical enough to say she won’t show unless *he* is the focus on the red carpet.

      • Ingrid says:

I hope I’m wrong and she won’t show up but I have a bad feeling about this.

ESA is a major theater award, she’s, as we all know, very Succesfull!Theatre!Director! (who hasn’t actually directed anything significant ever, but you know, I’m also very successful tennis player as I have played it at least three times. So there.)

      • HBIC says:

        @Ingrid
What’s the bad feeling you are talking about?

      • Ingrid says:

I have a bad feeling that she will show up. LOL.

      • HBIC says:

        @Ingrid
        She might. Unfortunately.

I’ve heard that he’s been happy and smiley in the last week or so… either they worked it out (but he’s never been smiley when they were together) or he’s rid of her. Here’s hoping it’s the latter.

I’ll guess we’ll find out soon enough.

      • Soothy says:

        @hbic

What’s he been up to this week?

      • HBIC says:

I saw an Instagram photo taken on the set of THC. He was smiling in it (I hope I wasn’t mistaken and that photo was recent).

      • **sighs** says:

Funny how he can be all smiles with co-stars or on set but with her it’s all doom and gloom. Tells me it’s not a depressive state in general and merely PR.

  62. anon says:

‘re the selfie comment-am I the only one who thinks that he took a swipe at Kim Kartrashian? I really don’t think he was talking about pics with him. For the most part he seems more than happy to participate.

  63. Ingrid says:

BC’s shoe auction closes today. They are currently at £550.

Compare: Hiddles: £2,150, Natalie Portman: £930, Beyonce £711. (All ended)

Apparently acting like a douche and fan shaming is working for you BC: your interest is declining fast. Congrats!

You’ll always have the nannies, though. FYI, there isn’t actually that many of them and none of them seem to be that rich.

(In this case it’s too bad because it’s for charity)

  64. Koodles says:

So, who all thinks sophie is going to make an appearance tonight? And if she does, what do you think she will wear? I don’t think it will be the same floral dress, but it will have flowers on it. Seems to be her trademark.

    • gg says:

I don’t think she will be there, or at the Hobbit premiere either

    • Soothy says:

I really am tired of the sight and sound of her. I’m hoping she stays away from public events. I’m interested in him and I’m interested in this movie. Both of those things have been drowned out so far by the constant reprinting of her picture and CV. Enough. I do not want to have some embarrassing BS shoved down my throat from people bafflingly trying to paint her as an overachieving figure of greatness.

      • Ingrid says:

        @Soothy- +1000

        Enough.

      • lola says:

I am also tired of her being dragged into his articles (especially the pictures of the really, really, really happy couple).

      • MissMary says:

I’d love to read about his actual work again, or upcoming projects, and not the fawning TWC vetted articles about her/them with a bare mention of a project woven around to make it “legit”.

    • Lucifer says:

me too hopes she does not show up. even if she does she ll wear a flower dress m sure.

      • Tifa says:

excellent guess lucifer! Red roses it is…and is it me or does her mid-riff look a little rounder?? For someone who is very skinny I’d guess either they just had dinner or bun in the oven?? Or maybe its just the dress?? Oh…I don’t know anymore…!!

He still doesn’t look very happy though…hope there will be videos.
Can someone post a link if you find any…

      • Soothy says:

Oh please don’t start with pregnancy rumours. It’s just a sh-t dress. Again. God, I’m so sick of her. Cue next round of gormless smirking pics recycled by the media again, again, again, again.

      • lola says:

In one picture she is holding a wine glass – so either no pregnancy or cloak and dagger again.

      • Soothy says:

I don’t know why people are guessing pregnancy. There’s no evidence for it at all. Although he quite happily breathed oxygen to those rumours with his his ridiculous ‘I need to be coy’ comment. And that is a weird little bag, not a glass. Provided by Erdem. Yet another overpriced dress she’s advertising for them. No longer ‘odious’ to do red carpets I take it then?

  65. ellesbelles says:

If SH shows, perhaps she still has the purple dress from her field romps. Or the bondage tape from the Octopus shoot

    • MissMary says:

Well, first pic of him doing the press walk for ESA is up and she’s not with him there so there’s hope she stayed home to groom her octopus.

      Take that as you will.

    • ellesbelles says:

Update, according to the twitterverse, The Sea Witch is at the Evening Standards with Otter

    • Tifa says:

My comments are taking forever to get approved by the moderator 🙁
Anyway if he were my fiancee I would never let him walk the redcarpet with a crooked tie!! And he’s presenting in front of everyone….tsk…tsk…

      • lola says:

        @Tifa
Helping her SO in picking dresses is probably a household chore in her mind – she doesn’t do those. Remember the LAX muddy jeans – that was worse than constantly crooked tie.

  66. Grace says:

Oh god, the original devil wears Prada is there too.

  67. Soothy says:

Anna wintour too. Sweet Mary, she looks more like the Grinch everyday. What a rotten little witch that is.

  68. Soothy says:

So the Daily Mail just had an article ready to go, did they? And of course they’re weirdly fawning over her again. This is becoming a rather predictable circus now.

  69. Grace says:

Finally saw a full-shot of the dress – it’s making my head dizzy.

  70. Lucifer says:

She is drinking. RIP the pregnancy rumours. Or just posing with a glass to divert the rumours. God knows. This woman is a master in finding out ugly dresses. Vomitworthy. And ill fitting. A loaner m sure. HWC made a contract with erdem m sure now

  71. lolaflowers says:

hmm curious that this thread is still open while Hiddles was closed. why?

  72. Florence says:

I always thought BC was a bit of an entitled, out of touch snob and now everyone else can see it too finally.

I think his relationship is real but he’s gone for the “right” type of girl. I quite like her dress I’m afraid, I like that she doesn’t hang it all out like a Fameho
