‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ 88-second teaser trailer drops: yay or nay?

the force awakens

Do you hear that? That’s the sound of all of the Star Wars nerds having a proper geek-out, because JJ Abrams dropped 88 seconds of NEW Star Wars on them. This is the teaser trailer/Thanksgiving gift for all the nerds: the first footage we’ve seen from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Because sometimes the Force gets sleepy from all of the turkey and the Force has to take a disco nap. But when The Force Awakens, the lightsabers will be cooler, people! The new lightsabers will have little mini-sabers attached to the hilt, giving the sabers more of an old-school sword feel.

Anyway, you can see the trailer here. I’m including the embed below though. I’ll admit it, I watched it three times. I was really hoping for a glimpse at Han Solo but he’s not there. We do get a glimpse at Oscar Isaac, and I think the guy in black is maybe Adam Driver? No look at Lupita Nyong’o or Gwendoline Christie either. So… are you excited?!

Doesn’t really explain what the storyline is going to be (does anyone know what the premise is?), but looks like it could be okay…

    • lisa2 says:

I was wondering about the plot too.. But hearing that music took me back to my childhood..

I hated the last films.. just ruined my memories.. But I’m holding off judgement. I hope this is good.

      • cr says:

I admit, seeing the Millennium Falcon and hearing the theme made me happy. And then I remembered how bad the movies have been after the first two. So I’m hoping that maybe, finally, they’ll get one right.

      • littlestar says:

Takes me back to my childhood too and watching Star Wars on repeat cuz I was IN LOVE with Hans Solo – in my little girl mind, he was exactly what a real man was and wanted to grow up and marry him haha.

      • FLORC says:

Ahhhh!!! so excited at the old music and MF flying in. And the light saber in the woods? Amazing.
I’m with the others. I grew up in love with the 1st 3 movies and books with many shoot off story lines. And the last 3? Horrible. Childhood memory crushing.

In the early rumors it was said to be leaked. Luke’s hand and saber that fell off pre “I am your Father” – Darth Vader, falls on a distant planet. 2 boys come upon it and seek to return the saber to it’s owner or another Jedi. Not so sure past that. Too many rumors.

        LittleStar
I was all about Luke. Now I get Solo’s attraction, but I was very young and found Luke to be hot! Hottest in Empire Strikes Back.

Side Note. Thank Goodness Lucas is not in control anymore. He had no passion to do right by it and the fans.

    • Abbott says:

No clue, you may want to check Wookie-pedia?

    • Dagmarunger says:

Let’s talk about Harrison’s face! Botox and fillers. Looks a lot younger and it is done well.

      • Suzanne says:

He needs to get that honker of a nose straightened….His nose and mouth are both cock-eyed. LOL Never saw the attraction there….

  2. Abbott says:

    Needs more dramatic trumpet sounds.

    *BWAMP!*

  3. Dids says:

I think it looks amazing!!! old school but still modern. I LOVE IT.

  4. LadyMTL says:

I honestly and truly got chills when I saw the Millennium Falcon. Aside from that, I’m reserving my geek-out until we see more. JJ Abrams hasn’t always hit it out of the park, at least not IMHO.

    • Ruth Dunbar says:

Oh god, I did too. I’m forty-freaking-one years old and I got chills. It’s prudent to reserve the geek-out, but I’m not sure my inner nine-year-old can handle that. I can’t wait.

    • Esmerelda says:

Me too. Stormtrooper: boring. Ball robot: wtf. Red 5 Jr: ooookay. Kid on air-bike: oh noes. Von Sydow: ???. Falcon: OMG I HAVE TO SEE THIS! NOW!

    • lucy2 says:

Me too. I LOVED the original movies so much, and that definitely had the feel of them.
I heard how bad the prequels were, and decided to never watch them, so my whole Star Wars universe is the original 3.
So far this looks good, I’ve liked JJ’s work in the past, and I’m cautiously excited for this!

    • Nicole says:

I had the exact opposite reaction… It felt like they were just throwing that in for fans without the ship organically fitting into the visuals. I liked the bits that seemed like they were re-inventing or starting from scratch. Guess I’m not going to be too happy with the actors either.

  5. merski says:

Please, PLEASE tell me there is someone else out there who does not care one bit about Star Wars…?

    • Abigail says:

I don’t. And I used to love it.

    • Chris2 says:

Moi! It sort of passed me by, haven’t seen any of ’em. Mind you, I’ve never seen a Bond movie either, so something is clearly awry.
(However…..apparently the Skellig Islands are in this film, that should be a laff!)

    • don't kill me i'm french says:

I don’t care.I tried to watch 2 movies( old version,2000’s version) and i never finished it

    • Lorelei says:

Another unimpressed person here, I really don’t get all the hype.

      • FLORC says:

It’s childhood nostalgia. If it meant nothing to you it might not start. Great universe of stories. And it’s classic formulas.
        *Farmboy destined for more.
        *Princess in need of help.
        *Rebel with good heart.
        * civilization in danger.
        *Good vs Evil
        *Temptations
        *Revenge/Salvation/Redemption

That’s why i’ve enjoyed the films (minus the last 3)

      • Chris2 says:

        FLORC
Sounds like I’d love it all now!
When the first one came out I was doing my finals at University, and our invigilator blessed the proceedings with ‘May the Force be With You’ , which was pretty nifty in that atmosphere.
I fell 150% in love with all things Harry Potter in my 50s…..Star Wars next?
        🙂

    • QQ says:

im here for your needs, anywhere between Hate-to-Need a nap..had to watch cause of the BF but this trailer told me exactly Nothing Percent

    • mary simon says:

      yay or nay? way nay.

  6. 'P'enny says:

rubbish! the voiceover is awful – whose voice was it? I assume it was the big bad.
secondly, sfx well dodgy around the Falcon and
thirdly – no Han Solo clip?????
and fourth the lightsabre has handles and makes it look like a sword. Is it me or does that make it a bit dangerous to the holder?

    • Caitlinsmommy says:

Husband geeked out on this repeatedly last night(and this morning). There is reference to Han Solo- at one point you hear his voice saying “is there room for an old war house in this battle?”

      • insomniac says:

I didn’t hear that. 🙁 Where did it come up in the trailer?

I kind of want to see this even though I thought the last three films were flaming piles of poo. I guess the 8-year-old Star Wars nut in me will live forever.

      • Ruth Dunbar says:

That trailer (the one with Han’s voice) is a fan-generated fake. I mean, whoever made it did a great job, but that line is like from Anchorman 2 or something.

    • Ingrid says:

I think the voice might be our OtterKing Cumberbatch…

    • M says:

the voiceover is awful – whose voice was it?

Benedict Cumberbatch or Max Von Sydow

    • Lindy79 says:

Immediately the voiceover sounds like Butawhiteguy CantbeKhan

Pronunciation, tone, certain words…yep I’d be 99% sure it’s him

      • Deb says:

I think it’s Cumberbatch. The voice has a decidedly Smaug-y quality to it. You know what would be even cooler though?? If it was James Earl Jones! We can dream. I think it’s Cumberbatch though.

      • Falco says:

I agree. It sounds like Smaug, but more computer-generated.

    • tarheel says:

It’s a Sith claymore lightsaber, which is badass.

  7. don't kill me i'm french says:

I never was into StarWars .i tried to watch 2 movies on the saga ( sorry it was bad for me)

    • FingerBinger says:

I was never into Star Wars either. Although I did watch the original three when I was a kid ,but I never bothered with the reboots.

  8. Tiffany27 says:

I’m not sold on it yet, but shout out to my pretend boyfriend Oscar Isaac.

  9. Betti says:

The voice over sounds like a certain newly engaged British actor who isn’t shilling his private life for an Oscar.

But can’t wait to see it anyway – am I total Star Wars nerd.

  10. Godwina says:

  11. Browniecakes says:

I cannot wait. So excited. Cumberbatch’s voice? That would explain why he was invited to the wrap party.

  12. Triple Cardinal says:

    “The Force Awakens”?!

Sounds like it went down for a nap.

  13. Rigby says:

It does sound like BC, but Steve Weintraub, Collider’s editor-in-chief, has tweeted that the voiceover is Andy Serkis: https://twitter.com/colliderfrosty/status/538374784216989697?s=17

Would be horribly unoriginal if Bennykins had been hired yet again to play a sci-fi/fantasy villain with a deep voice. I’m inclined to believe it’s Serkis. The guy is SO GOOD. It made my knickers fall off.

    • M.A.F. says:

How could that be Serkis?! I know he is in it but that doesn’t sound like him.

      • cr says:

I had to go and look for interviews with Andy, where’s he’s talking in his normal voice, but yes it does actually sound like Andy.

@Rigby, out of all the actors who came to fame with the LOTR trilogy, he’s actually done an extraordinary amount of work, both behind and in front of the camera. He’s very, very good.

    • Veronica says:

Interesting. I knew it wasn’t Cumberbatch, but I wouldn’t have guessed him. He’s done an amazing job building his career post-LOTR.

  14. d says:

Adult me rolled their eyes, but watched the trailer and my inner kid was THRILLED! So, “yay” from me.

  15. Ginger says:

YAY!!! I watched it twice on my phone and twice on my computer once I got home. I can’t get over the new lightsaber. This takes me back to my childhood. Only this time I’ll get to share it with my own son. I can’t wait!

  16. Amy says:

Most of the trailer was pretty meh for me, apart from the footage of the Millennium Falcon and the theme song. The little rolling robot looked cute and the woman atop that runaway hovercraft thing was kind of cool. But apart from that, no idea what this movie is about. And I wasn’t crazy about the redesigned lightsaber, it looked too much like half a crucifix to me (but then I’m Catholic).

    • Esmerelda says:

@Amy “And I wasn’t crazy about the redesigned lightsaber, it looked too much like half a crucifix to me (but then I’m Catholic).”

…yep. And I really hope they do not go down that way: random Xstian metaphors over Wagnerian music – in space! – do not quite work. (or is this to be JJ’s Parsifal?)
And not crazy about the set design: they chose to be very faithful to the originals, with only minor hokey updates, like the robot and the cross saber… Lucas at least created a different aesthetic for the prequels… it did not work, but he made the effort.

    • Jessica says:

Traditional broad swords were designed to look like crucifixes. And the redesigned lightsaber looks like a traditional broad sword with the extra bits attached. So I’m not sure why the lightsaber looking “too much like half a crucifix” is a problem. Unless you have a problem with what a normal broad sword looks like, too.

  17. Caz says:

I tried hard to be cynical but as soon as I saw the Falcon I was thinking Woo Hoo!!! I’ve watched it 4 times 🙂

  18. Mia4S says:

Remember how incredibly cool and awesome the teaser for The Phantom Menace was?

    Remember The Phantom Menace?

Cautious optimism only from me. Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice…

  19. Kali says:

So much yay! With a hint of cautious optimism (still not recovered from just how much “Interstellar” sucked as compared to the advertising…)

Honestly though, 2015 is shaping up to be a fairly solid year for the pop culture nerds among us. Just off the top of my head:

“Antman: you guys like Paul Rudd, right? RIGHT?!?”
“Avengers: F*%^ YEAH ULTRON (he’s the bad guy? d@mmit….)
“Jurassic Park: Danger Vest and Raptor Gang”
“Hunger Games: if you didn’t get the Hitler comparisons with President Coin in the first one, you should get it now….”

    and now this?

    *fans self*

I think I need to go have a lie down….

  20. Lis says:

Nope. Lost interest after the original three … younger me loved those. 🙂

  21. vauvert says:

Yay! Seeing the Falcon gave me chills. I am such a die hard fan…. And frankly, if JJ can’t get this right then I have no idea who could. But maybe this us my inner geek talking, still dizzy that finally Han Solo will be back.

  22. Nick says:

Why is George Lucas continuing to torture us with these horrible movies. Didn’t he say that he was going to stop making them because everyone hated that last three that he did. Now, we’re going to be torture with three badly casted, badly scripted and full cgi disasters.

    • FLORC says:

Lucas has nothing to do with this. He sold everything. He has no creative input with Star Wars anymore.

This new movie is said to be more for how the fans and Star Wars universe should have it. And they’ll be touching upon some very interesting characters from the books. The SW universe is massive! It’s far from simply Siths and Jedi.

    • Jessica says:

George Lucas has nothing to do with this new films, or any new Star Wars films hereafter. He sold all of LucasFilm’s rights to Disney. Disney is making the new Star Wars film, with JJ Abrams directing.

  23. Ava says:

    Soooooooo excited!!

  24. Veronica says:

Honestly, I think “teaser” is about as much description as you can give it. Other than rehashing a few of our favorite aspects of the franchise, it’s not giving us much to work on in terms of developing any real impression. It’s fun, but I’ll wait to the longer trailer before I start to have any ideas about whether this will good or not. I’m a fan of J.J. Abrams earlier work, but his larger Hollywood franchise movies have been hit or miss for me.

(This being said, I’m one of the few fans that I enjoyed their prequels despite their flaws, so this movie would have to be Twilight level terrible for me to hate it.)

  25. Jessica says:

For everyone saying, “This tells us nothing about the plot”. That’s the point of a TEASER trailer. It’s to TEASE the film. Just give audiences a hint of what’s going on in the film, but tells nothing about characters or plot.

And to answer the question: Hells Yeah it’s a YAY! My stomach was in knots watching the teaser. I can’t wait for the longer trailers and the final film.

  26. tarheel says:

Very excited! Like the look of Daisy Ridley’s character, and the claymore Sith lightsaber. Really hoping for a badass female character.

So happy Lucas’ little hands are off this franchise.

  27. LAK says:

I’m excited to see John Boyega. He was fabulous in ATTACK THE BLOCK and HALF A YELLOW SUN.
