Julianne Moore wins big at the Gotham Awards: is she headed for Oscar glory?

The Gotham Awards were held last night in NYC. I’m including some photos from the red carpet in this post. Much like the New York Film Critics Circle Awards (also announced yesterday), the Gotham Awards are good for some buzz, but they probably won’t have much to do with the final Oscar campaigns and winners. At this year’s Gotham Awards, the big winner was Birdman – the film took home the “Best Feature” award, plus Michael Keaton won Best Actor. I think most people agree that Birdman will be included in the Best Picture Oscar race, but I seriously doubt it’s going to win Best Picture. Maybe I’m wrong?

But the best thing to come out of the Gothams was that Julianne Moore picked up a Best Actress Award for Still Alice. Many, many Oscar prognosticators believe Julianne has a relatively smooth ride to Oscar glory. Her biggest competition might be Reese Witherspoon, but Reese has already got an Oscar and Julianne is overdue for a win, which will work in Julianne’s favor.

What else? Let’s see… Boyhood picked up another award, this time the Gotham Independent Film Audience Award. As I said in the NYFCC post, I believe Boyhood will make it to the top-ten Best Picture list. But I kind of doubt it will win. The Hollywood Reporter sort of agrees with me – they have a write-up today about how the NYFCC and the Gotham Awards are harbingers of NOTHING!

Oh, and Julianne’s dress is Givenchy! And I don’t even hate it. Oh, and Scarlett Johansson was there. It was confirmed yesterday that she did marry Romain back in October. I’m also including photos of Ethan Hawke, Oscar Isaac (his velvet is hotter than the Otter King’s velvet), Jon Hamm and Michael Keaton.

  1. I didn’t realize Julianne’s husband was so hot.

  2. Tarsha says:

I love her, she is fantastic. I still think her death scene in The Hand That Rocks The Cradle is the most amusing one I’ve ever seen.

  3. Jaderu says:

I want a Michael Keaton, Christian Bale, and George Clooney all out brawl…in baby oil. Val Kilmer can host and cater, Adam West can referee and Ben Affleck can wait outside.

    I’m diggin Julianne’s dress.

  4. Greta says:

Boyhood and to a lesser extent, Birdman, have been atop almost every list to win Best Picture. I would like to see Michael Keaton, Marion Cotillard (not Julianne Moore), JK Simmons and Patricia Arquette win the acting awards. I guess time will tell. I think all of these Critics awards don’t adequately predict anything–it’s really the SAG awards and the Director/Producer Guild awards that do so.

  5. Luciana says:

Scarlett looks really good with short hair. Motherhood agrees with her!

Julianne Moore is a vampire. I bow to her gorgeusness.

    • Sam says:

I attribute it less to vampirism and more to her (probable) religious moisturizing and sunscreen routine. She’s a natural redhead, so I totally suspect she’s very cautious about skincare. Almost every redhead I know is the same way – they know they’re at risk of aging quick, so they get on that like crazy.

  6. MarcelDeux says:

    Oscar Isaac *swoon*

  7. FingerBinger says:

Julianne Moore has been around a long time and has done some great work. It’s about time she gets some recognition. Patricia Arquette is another good actress who is so underrated.

  8. mia girl says:

Michael Keaton goes semi-meta playing an aging actor who built his stardom playing a superhero but gives it up… and the first award he wins is a “Gotham” Award.

The universe just collapsed on itself.

  9. danielle says:

oof, do not like scarjos with short hair! Julianna looks amazing

  10. lucky says:

Read on another site that Julianne is a diva and a total b!tch. Don’t know if true.

  11. LadyJane says:

Julianne is 53 – Madonna is 56. Juilanne wins the ‘looking hot in your 50s without resorting to freakish plastic surgery award’.

And Scarlet is giving me shades of Busy Phillips with that cropped haircut.

  12. Cj says:

Hey couldn’t Jen buy a nominate for herself and cake?do you think Tff was congradulating the whole movie and she thought the standing was just for her.

  13. Greek Chic says:

Is it me or Scar Jo looks like Elsa Pataky here? I like the short hair on her.

  14. noway says:

I want Keaton and Moore to win Oscars this time. Just because they deserve them. Sorry I hate the dress though, but the husband is a great accessory, and she still looks great in a bad dress.
