Lena Dunham in a Zac Posen mullet dress at the Globes: terrible, as usual?

FFN_RIJ_GOLDEN_GLOBES_SET1_011115_51623134

For a moment on the E! red carpet show, I only saw Lena Dunham from the waist up, and I tweeted something nice about how she looked presentable. Then I saw this full Zac Posen look. It’s a mullet dress. So no nice words shall be had. First of all, Lena told Ryan Seacrest that Zac Posen was her babysitter when she was little. Because of course. Because Lena doesn’t get enough criticism for being the hyper-privileged woman with family connections up the wazoo. Lena also told Ryan that she deleted Twitter from her phone to “create a safer space for myself emotionally” after “people threaten my life and tell me what a cow I am.” Lena Dunham, always a victim. I mean, men do behave aggressively towards women online and it’s a real problem. But Lena Dunham is not and should not be the poster girl for that.

As for her look with the Zac Posen mullet dress… I think we can all agree that at the very least, it’s a much better look than her 2014 Emmys look, right? Right. Because at least she didn’t have a blonde bowl cut. Her hair is back to normal and her style is merely boringly fug rather than flat-out offensive. Also: Lena’s shoes might have been the ugliest shoes on the carpet.

I’m including photos of the other “Girls” too. Allison Williams wore Armani Prive and the dress was… eh. It reminds me of something Zooey Deschanel would have worn. A girly ball gown, basically. The real problem was that Allison’s old-fashioned hairstyle was super-unflattering. As for Zosia Mamet, she wore this Andrew Gn gown which just looks like a cheap mall dress. I saw a lot of people on Twitter complaining about her total look, but while I thought she could do much better, this actually didn’t offend me.

Can’t help it. Have come to love the girl. If she looked great it would actually be a let-down.

    • Someonestolemyname says:

      Allison Williams looks fabulous.
Lena looks sort of like she slept in the dress. I don’t get the dress. Pretty color though.

  2. Ollyholly says:

Lena, Zac Posen is not your friend.

Also, I may be over-reading things but is it not slightly passive aggressive to wear the same colour as your boss, a la Allison Williams? Maybe I’m just projecting because I can’t stand her.

    • wolfpup says:

I know nothing of Lena Durham (?), and although I have noticed posts on this blog about her, I was never interested enough to read about someone who just looks silly to me. I wonder if she is trying to be a caricature. Not pretty! (No other judgements).

      • kcarp says:

She wants to look like she doesn’t try because she is too cool. Actually it is an attempt to hide her own insecurities about not being as attractive as other Hollywood stars. She hides behind weird clothes choices and ridiculous faces for the camera.

      • Amy Tennant says:

I’ve relied on that trick in pictures sometimes. Trying to look ugly-on-purpose so people won’t notice I’m ugly-for-real.

  3. Snazzy says:

I just can’t with LD … forever the troll. Why? WHY?

    • Tpaz says:

Ugh. I can’t stand her. She tries so hard to be “different”, that she just seems like a try hard. Just so contrived.

    • Joy says:

My theory is that she thinks ok I’m ugly, so let me UGLY IT UP to the millionth degree. I’ll show them how hideous I can be!!

      • atrain says:

This is exactly right. And then she gets to be the victim because everyone is criticizing her, even though that’s what she wanted.

      • Snazzy says:

It’s like – I work really hard to look ugly but not really you just think I look ugly but I actually look beautiful and you just think I look ugly because you don’t understand that ugly is actually beautiful …

Just looking at her gives me a headache … I don’t understand it, but I truly loath this woman

  4. TeresaMaria says:

What is Lena hiding under that dress? I guess it’s probably just pictures, but the dress looks like a tent floating in the wind …
+ that tattoo on her shoulder kills any hope for a descent image, no matter what the dress does

    • LadyMTL says:

I don’t mind the tattooed arm (and I think she actually looks really good from the waist up) but what gets me is how she always stands with her feet all turned in, like she’s a shy 8 year old. You’re a grown woman, Lena, learn to stand up straight! Sigh.

      • TeresaMaria says:

Maybe she is trying to do the fashionable “feet-turned-in” model-pose?

      • DrMrsTheMonarch says:

She clearly knows how to stand up and pose, and she clearly chooses not to. Random chance would have her getting it right occasionally.

She seems to feel the need to make others as uncomfortable with her appearance as possible.

Sort of like Andy Kaufman standing on stage singing the theme to “Mighty Mouse” over and over.

But, you know, with an ill-fitting dress, minimal talent, lots of name-dropping, and a total willingness to frame everything as striking a blow for feminism.

    • Belle Epoch says:

I agree about the tattoo. But it’s another way for her to be a victim! What, I can’t have an ugly blotch on one arm without being criticized?

  5. MelissaManifesto says:

Hollywood embraced Lena Dunham because she is smart and does not meet “it girl” standards. I’ve tried to embrace her for the same reason, but I can’t. Every time I read about a magazine article about her, it always comes off as if we SHOULD like her for the reason stated above. But I just can’t, (I know this isn’t the subject at hand, but wanted to get if off my chest.)

    • smcollins says:

That’s okay, I’m right there with you!

As far as the dress, I don’t think she looks too bad. It’s definitely an improvement. Not great, but better. Maybe if it were a better fit? It seems a little baggy.

    • wolfpup says:

I saw her on Ellen a few weeks back – never saw any smarts about her. What is smart about looking (or behaving), out of place? Why does she not have some grace about herself, to notice this?

  6. Janet says:

Jesus, can’t she find a dress that fits right?

    • chaine says:

something about the cut makes it appear that she has extremely short legs. i actually like the shoes, but not with that dress and not for red carpet. they would look sharp with a dark business suit.

  7. Hautie says:

I am still standing behind me very bias opinion… that if you have ugly legs… wear a pair of hose! Smooth out the look of your leg. Especially if you are walking a very public red carpet event.

And learn how to stand up straight… for the love of all things holy. The dumb forced knock knee pose, has got to go. It’s not cute. It does not make you look endearing. Worst offender of this pose… Katie Holmes.

It is amazing to me how so many women… wearing ridiculously priced couture dresses… have ugly posture. And it ruins the look of a pricey dress.

  8. Grace says:

Well….Lena looked better than she normally does at these events.

  9. greenmonster says:

That was one of the worst outfits of the night! The colour is awful on her, the shape isn’t helping either. The second photo looks even a bit unreal. Her arms look photoshopped onto the picture or so. I hope she does this on purpose, otherwise it would be sad.

  10. Jayna says:

Thank God, she changed her hair color and style. It’s like a cinnamon brown now, and beautiful against her complexion.

    • Milena says:

Yes, it really flatters her! I think her coloring with the dress also looks great. Not a bad look IMO.

  11. The Wizz says:

Lena is the last remaining guarantee of a fabulously awful red carpet appearance. She should always be invited to awards ceremonies as her horrible dress sense is a breath of fresh air against all the celebs dressed by stylists. I would be disappointed if she showed up looking great.

  12. Danielle says:

Hey I’ve never seen her show and can just barely pick her out in a line up but this just seems like victim blaming to me. If the interwebs feel unsafe then she has every right to say so. Loudly. And honestly given how entitled alot of young tweeter users feel to give women “feedback” on their looks, I’m not surprised that she has it rougher than say Taylor Swift.

    • sally says:

I agree Danielle. I don’t know why when Lena complains about the negativity toward her image – among other things- on Twitter, she’s chastised for being a complainer. She told Ryan she gets death threats on Twitter, that’s serious!

    • scarf girl says:

She does get a lot of negative feedback, however, when she told Seacrest she deleted her Twitter-at that moment in time, not true. She was in fact promoting Girls on Twitter prior to the Globes. It might be more accurate to say she has pulled back?

But there in a nutshell lies the problem, or part of it. She makes crazy or partially true statements, people react, and then she claims she is a victim. It is immaturity, hope she grows out of it but…..she is in a position to be mollycoddled so doubt it.

  13. boredblond says:

    Yikes..very weeble

  14. Foxi loo says:

Oh dear Lena! I can’t imagine that red tent would flatter anyone.

  15. Citygirl says:

I had images of Durham sitting down and the stiff front of the dress popping up and tipping her over. She so reminds me of Agnes Gooch (Auntie Mame). Someone please school this woman on her posture, how to pose and compensate for her being not the prettiest on the carpet.

  16. paola says:

If Zac Posen was her babysitter, that dress he created for her speaks volumes on how she behaved when she was little. I would call this dress ‘vengeance’.
Her teeth are especially yellow here. Surely she can afford a dentist?

  17. littlemissnaughty says:

What I want to know is, WHO does her makeup??? It’s not good. It’s too severe and so dated. She has great skin, she could look lovely.

  18. vauvert says:

Can’t stand Lena. There is something very grating about her, and the fact she tries hard to look awkward and uncomfortable and unstylish just so she can whine about it later makes me go spare. Horrible dress and shoes and posture but I expect nothing less.
And Zosia looked fug. No other word will do. Allison tried, poor thing, but the layers of sequinned tulle screamed cheap ballerina to me. Harsh, I know. She was going for a glam, old HW look but other than the colour, I think she missed that boat by a fair bit. Cannot understand how with all the money and choices available these women cannot get it right.

  19. Lucy2 says:

Allison’s is a bit fussy but pretty.
Lena looked okay on the front top half but then she turned around and it was like no! And now seeing the front of the skirt double no!

  20. Ginger says:

Her hair and makeup actually look good. The dress however, not so much. It doesn’t even fit her. And I’m normally not a fan of matchy matchy shoes unless you are wearing black. She needs a new stylist pronto. I’m guessing it’s now her “thing” to look bad/awful/different (?) on the red carpet? If so, she needs to get a new schtick. Why not wear tailored pieces and look great from the neck down too? As for the tattoo, while I’m not a huge fan of arm pieces I really do like tattoos in general. That doesn’t bother me. It might actually look good if her styling made sense. And again, she’s slouching and mouth breathing. The photo where she’s smiling is much better.

  21. scout says:

I just threw up in my mouth, not good morning to start looking at this creature.

  22. Dante says:

Lena, you are not a little girl, stand up straight and brush your teeth. Mullet dresses are never okay. She looks awful and that makes me sad because I think for once she is trying not to look awful. Stop wearing tents, you are not obese.

Allison’s hair is too flat on top and her dress looks like my Christmas tree garland.

The other Girl warrants no commentary, just awful.

  23. Diana B says:

Terrible as usual. With Lena there is just no other answer. Allison Williams’ hair looks better in stills than it did on TV.

  24. QQ says:

Terrible but not as usual Trollery .. this is the Prettifyingof Dunham so we can stop thinking about that gross book of hers already … also sorry but that pic of her Nipple covers circulating on twitter was classic Unnecessary stuff from her.. also Someone should tell her to stop Sexy Vamping on carpets …. It’s the worst

Allison looked good.. especially in motion and it pains me to say that about her … but she did

Zosia ( That Name *swoon*) took over the dress trolling duties for Lena BUT I have to say in Pics looks overall Better than when I saw it on TV last Night.. reads less cheap prom Tafetta

  25. Msmlnp says:

If you wear a red dress, you shouldn’t really wear red shoes…its a very hard color to match just right.

And I’m sick of her open gaping mouth derp face pose.

  26. maeliz says:

Lena needs to stand and pose for the pictures like a lady. She looks like she’s collapsing while making a stupid pose in the first picture. I wonder if she picks these ridiculous dresses thinking she looks good

  27. Otaku fairy says:

It’s the bottom that ruins it- I hate that kind of skirt and hemline on dresses. The top is fine, the color is gorgeous and I’d even say her hair and makeup goes good with the top of the dress.

I kind of like Allision’s dress too- it’s a little promy or something i’d expect to see on a teen celebrity at an event, but it’s still pretty.

  28. SamiHami says:

Apparently Posen really hates Lena Dunham and she just doesn’t realize it. First of all, it doesn’t fit. Secondly, it’s a mullet dress…they are an abomination that should never be worn by anyone, ever. Third, her legs look horrible. She should be wearing panythose or at least have a slight tan. Fourth, the idiotic poses. Doesn’t she have people to show her how to pose on the red carpet? I mean, what’s up with her mouth hanging open in the first picture? Overall a fail.

  29. babyb says:

i’m just a poor little rich girl with a complicated psyche no-one understand….woe is me

  30. Ana says:

LD’s dress looks like if it were unzipped in the back…that’s the look it gives. If it were a little more fit around the waist it would have been probably the best one she’s worn…

The Armani Prive dress is stunning on the other hand.

  31. SurlyMonkey says:

Did you see she had her stylist/friend/whatever post pictures of her topless to IG while getting ready yesterday?

She is just SO thirsty. It’s not funny or charming or whatever she is aiming for at this point.

For someone so very traumatized by the way she is treated on social media, she sure spends a lot of time trolling for the attention.

When she trots out all the therapy she has gone through, all I can think about is that it is just another oportunity to spend an hour talking about herself, most likely in the third person.

Get some real help and get off my tv.

    • Peppa says:

That made me want to vomit. I don’t mean her body, which is fine, I mean because it looked like her boobs were infected and her nips crusted over.

  32. db says:

Lena’s red carpet schtick is really getting tired.

  33. phlyfiremama says:

Worst look of the night, hands down. Even Kerry, as horrible as the outfit was, had flawless everything else~

  34. I Choose Me says:

I used to not mind Lena Dunham but gosh she’s exhausting. I feel like she dresses fug on purpose because she thinks it makes her edgy or hipster cool.

I give this outfit two ‘ughs’ and a raspberry.

  35. taxi says:

Allison should lose the ’40s Hollywood hair. She’s attractive enough in a very modern, almost androgynous, way and simpler hair would flatter her.

    Lena? It’s all been said.

Zosia’s get up makes me think of someone who pulled separates from the closet during a power blackout. Surprised her shoes are a matched pair.
