Amy Poehler in Jenny Packham at the SAGs: bad fit or ‘glowing’?

Screen Actors Guild Awards Arrivals
Last night I noticed that, from the side, Amy Poehler looked pregnant. (It’s hard to see in these photos from the front, but it was more noticeable on camera.) I felt guilty thinking this, because I would surely look bumpy too in that clinging Jenny Packham gown. Many people on Twitter were talking about how Amy looked pregnant and there was a lot of jubilation at the thought of Amy having her boyfriend, comedian Nick Kroll’s, baby. This was my favorite tweet on the matter:

Plus E! Online tweeted that she was “glowing,” which is code for pregnant, right? Her dress is blah.

If Amy is pregnant, congratulations, if not I’m sorry! She’s been with Nick for almost two years now so it isn’t out of the question. Amy was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series which went to Uzo Aduba for Orange is The New Black.

Here’s Amy’s Parks & Rec costar, Rashida Jones, in Emanuel Ungaro. I like the idea of this dress more than the execution. It’s a contemporary gown with a bold abstract black and white print and strong angular lines. I just wish the bodice was more flattering. Still, she looks quite pretty. Rashida presented Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series, which went to Kevin Spacey for House of Cards. He didn’t bother to show up.

Here are Amy’s fellow nominees Edie Falco in Randi Rahm and Julia Louis Dreyfus in Monique Lhuillier. Edie has five SAG Awards already, all for The Sopranos, and she’s been nominated for SAGs a total of 20 times! Julia has a total of 14 SAG nominations and six wins, five for Seinfeld and one for Veep. Damn.

Amy is one of my all-time favorite actresses – why doesn’t she ever win at these awards shows. I think she’s just put on a few pounds. She’s never been super thin. If she is pregnant I’m sure it will be another darling baby 🙂

  2. Lindy79 says:

I thought so at the Globes, she looked fuller than she has in a while but didn’t want to start speculating

    • Erinn says:

Mmm I really am not sure. Her arms looks a little bit heavier as well, so it could be just a bit of weight gain, or a badly fitting dress. If she’s pregnant, congrats to them.

      • QQ says:

But here is the Thing with Amy: She ALWAYS has a almost just well fitted dress that ISN’T .. is like a Thing with her where they do a weird ass Empire waist deal that is always like uh.. what?? So I don’t Think we can call it

THE DRESS RASHIDA HAS IS MY BEST OF THE NIGHT!! OMGGGGG

      • Erinn says:

This is true, QQ. She’s consistently just a little bit off fit wise. I kind of wonder if it’s that she gains or loses before the event and it’s just where she picks up or loses weight.

I kind of love Rashida’s dress. The bright blue with the white and charcoal color is fantastic.

      • Bridget says:

Amy Poehler has had 2 children already and has never been a twig. Remember when everyone thought Jennifer Garner was pregnant with kid #4? For all we know, Amy may have just not felt like sheathing herself in triple Spanx, and I dislike that we’re scrutinizing her stomach like this.

  3. Charlotte says:

Amy looks so happy, so “glowing” or bloat, I’m happy for her.
Love Rashida’s dress. Would wear that any day.
Love Edie and Julia, but burn those dresses.

    • Mixtape says:

I also love Rashida’s dress. Would wear it, would decorate my house with it. However, cute dress or not, she won me over with her classy response to the red carpet interviewer who cluelessly complimented her on her “tan.”

    • Ripley says:

I adore Rashida’s dress. The lines, the concept, the implementation. Everything. Love it.

  4. lunchcoma says:

I think it’s just a bad dress choice. Amy’s style has always been inconsistent, and I don’t see her playing coy games like some other famous women do.

  5. Belle Epoch says:

I like Rashida’s dress. It’s not quite right on top but it’s unusual in a good way. And no saggy trauma.

    • spaniard says:

IAWT. The only gown in this post worth to mention. The others are quite boring.

    • betteboo says:

I agree. I really liked this dress. It really suited her colouring and seemed fresh and modern in comparison with most of the gowns here

    • MaiGirl says:

This is the best she has looked in a long time. She always tries for different/quirky, but often lands on just plain ugly. This time, she looks fresh and interesting.

  6. Anny says:

I love the fabric and colour. Really nice dress. She looks fuller but I actually like it when celebs look healthy as opposed to skeletal. My fav dress from this post is Julias. Other dresses are unflattering.

  7. Miss M says:

I saw some highlights of the golden globes on YouTube and there were a couple of side shots where she looked pregnant. So, it is not the dress…

  8. Anastasia says:

I also thought something was different at the Globes, and this? Is not just bloat. I can tell even from the front shots. From the side, I actually gasped and got excited for her. I’ve really gotten into the Kroll Show, and he is so talented and funny!

  9. aang says:

If she is not pregnant the person who dressed her should be fired.

  10. EC says:

I don’t think she’s pregnant. I think she was really corseted into some of her gowns at the GG’s b/c she was a presenter, but she is just going with a more relaxed look here. Since it’s navy blue and sparkly for the packrat in me loves it (and her, duh).

    LOVED RASHIDA’S DRESS also.

  11. Lydia says:

She’s a regular forty something woman with young kids who doesn’t have a six pack with a totally flat stomach. Just like 98% of other women her age. Rude speculation

    • wendi says:

Agreed, except you have to admit in Hollywood, she is atypical of other women her age. Her body type is normal everywhere else, but she is not representative of most Hollywood actresses in terms of size and body type.

Edit: I do think it’s nice – but unusual – that for whatever reason the powers that be in Hollyweird have cut Amy some slack and “allowed” her to have an acting career without conforming to the normal Hollywood standards

  12. Lucretia says:

WHY does a small belly on the front of a woman need to mean pregnancy? Am I the only woman over 40 whose had kids and doesn’t have a flat stomach?

I realize we’re gossiping and the speculating on CB is all in fun, but I feel like I need to be in Amy’s corner here — As someone who had three babies all over 8 pounds, and can’t seem to lose the “pooch” in the front, I know what it’s like to have people glance at my front and see the “hmm. pregnant again?” question in their eyes. It used to be completely demoralizing, but being well past having babies at this point I am actually entertained and slightly flattered that people (who don’t know my age) seem to wonder.

Again, I know this is all in fun, but it would be nice to see us embracing womanly curves on a mother, rather than reducing the conversation to wondering why she would allow herself to show a belly or that it can’t mean anything other than she’s pregnant.

    • gritsngreens says:

      Lucretia wins the comments today!
Love Amy – no matter what she wears. She looks happy.
Also, Julia – I adore her, but she looks tired? Maybe the nude lipstick isn’t working for her? I may be in the minority, but I do like Rashida’s dress. She looks great.

      • Lucretia says:

        thanks, @gritsngreens!

I realize I may sound hypocritical that I am entertained by the attention to my own tummy, but it’s b/c they must think I am much younger than I am!

    • lucy2 says:

I agree. I think she looks great, and we need to stop screaming PREGNANT! every time a woman’s stomach is not completely flat.

    • Wren33 says:

Oh God. Between my first and second kids, I was asked on multiple occasions whether I was pregnant when I was not. It was just so awkward. I think people were assuming I would get pregnant again at some point, so my little pot belly caused endless speculation.

    • Renee says:

      Ladies,

My stomach regularly looks like that and I have birthed no children. The only time that my stomach is flat is when I haven’t eaten.

      • poppy says:

here here! no babies either but there are times where i look at my tummy and think “immaculate conception?” when really it is 2 slices too many.

    • ScrewStewrat99 says:

I’ll never forget going to Walgreens to get birth control a few weeks after I had given birth. The lady went to give me my prescription then looked at me and said hold on. She came back with a pharmacist who then asked me if I was pregnant. I told him no, so he asked if I had given birth recently. I snapped at him and told him yes a couple of weeks ago. He felt bad and tried to explain that they had to make sure before they gave me the medication, but I felt horrible. I was already depressed and all over the place emotionally. I wanted to crawl under a rock.

I really let myself go and it’s taken me a year to get ok emotionally again since having my little girl. I still have the pooch -_- I got a treadmill recently and have started dieting and working out (down 7 pounds!!), but who knows if the pooch will go away. I’ll never ask someone if they are pregnant. I don’t want to make someone feel like crap if they aren’t.

      • Lucretia says:

Ugh, I am sorry to hear that story, @ScrewStewrat99! Don’t be too hard on your pooch . . . It’s sort of a badge of honor . . . You made a person! and your body will never be quite the same, but is still beautiful!

      • poppy says:

Aw! they were just looking out for you but i understand the agony of having the extra weight and then someone pointing it out. BUT you are doing something about it and you’ll get to where you want to be.
if you can manage 45 min (ideally 1hr 20 min) non-stop walking it will start to tighten up all over fairly quickly (a couple of weeks, 5x a week) and the extra weight will start to fall off a little after that. i leisurely ride a bike (10mph) on flat terrain for 1hr20m and it made HUGE difference. you don’t have to kill yourself, not olympic style speed walking either. you just want to move for more than 45 minutes.

fwiw, my husband has ALWAYS said a woman should have a tiny pooch. he’s not the only man that enjoys women that look feminine so don’t sweat it if you are left with one!

  13. scout says:

I like Amy’s gown, love the color, bit skin tight but she looks happy.

  14. Renee says:

Amy looks dumpy. I do not like this color on her even though you’d think that it would be a win; she’s blond, the dress is a nice shade of blue. It just doesn’t look good on her.

Rashdia Jones: beautiful woman who consistently looks bad. Although this dress isn’t too bad. I’m with CB here: I like the idea more so than the execution.

Edie Falco looks bad. I don’t like this color on her at all and the cut of the dress is not flattering.

I also think that Julia Louis-Dreyfuss looks well, not exactly bad but not as good as she’s looked in the past. Maybe the dress is a bit matronly??? Perhaps she should have worn her hair up, maybe had a brighter lip?? That’s what I would have done. Scrolling up to look at her again, she definitely needs a brighter lip, the color that she is wearing is washing her out and her hair looks flat. The cut of the dress is not flattering on her either.

    • Esmom says:

ITA with most of your commentary. The thing that doesn’t work for me with Amy is that she always looks too (fake) tan to me, it’s especially aging on her, maybe too harsh with her hair color.

I can’t figure out why Rashida always seems to get it wrong. She is so beautiful but always looks sort of messy and undone, maybe she needs a professional stylist? I love the dress, though.

The lace is what really ruins Julia’s dress for me, ugh. And she looks like she forgot to wear lipstick.

      • Wren33 says:

I always like Rashida’s dresses more than other people apparently. But, she is always just shy of hitting it out the park. I love this dress, but I feel like where the waist falls makes her seem wide.

  15. Marianne says:

I also thought she looked pregnant too. I felt kind of bad last night when I stated that, because its kind of rude if she isn’t. But I dunno. It could just be the wrong dress/wrong angle.

  16. Jayna says:

I love the uniquness of Rashida’s gown and it looks beautiful with her skin tone.

Julia looks fantastic in that black lace gown.

    I thought Amy looked great.

I think Edie Falco looked nice in the gown when walking. In the still photo above, just okay. But last night I thought it was pretty on her. Nothing spectacular, but nice.

It’s really fantastic that all of these late 40s/50s actresses l are getting so many great roles on TV/Cable/Netflix, etc.

  17. lucy2 says:

Love the color of Amy’s dress. JLD’s is a little more old fashioned than she usually goes, and it’s nice but not one of my favorites.
Rashida is gorgeous but often chooses odd and unflattering gowns. By comparison, I actually like this one on her.

  18. smee says:

I love Rashida Jones, but that dress looks like a cut-out cardboard – not flattering. I am excited about her new documentary “Hot Girls Wanted”. She’s not afraid to say she’s a feminist!

IDK about Amy P being pregnant – sometimes she wears clothes that show her natural, round tummy – I’m not 100% convinced. Too bad she didn’t win for P&R – I’m going to miss that show!!

    • lucy2 says:

I saw something about Rashida at Sundance, I didn’t realize that was her film. I was sad when she left Parks, but she’s got a lot of projects she’s writing and directing I think, so I’m happy she left for those opportunities.
There was a great panel at Sundance I came across about women in the industry. It was Mindy Kaling, Lena Dunham (ugh), Jenji Kohan, and Kristin Wiig. No tip toeing around “feminist”, and a good discussion about writing as well.

  19. Beckysuz says:

I love Nick Kroll…he is the best part of “the League” …if you’ve never watched it get thee to Netflix and start bingeing asap. I would have Nick Kroll’s babies all day

  20. Jessica says:

She usually has a little tummy, but this looks like a bump. Starts just below her ribs and is that perfect round shape. Either she’s very bloated and decided to wear a clingy dress anyway, or she’s at least a few months pregnant.

    • Anastasia says:

Yes, I mean, I agree with what was said above. I’m 44, and I don’t have a flat stomach (I had one child). But it is not this round firm sort of shape. It’s more like refrigerated biscuit dough. Amy’s does look like actual pregnancy, but who knows? I am also glad that she can have an imperfect body and be so successful and admired. I LOVE her.

  21. Comity says:

Rashida’s boob game is on target. Anniston should take note

  22. Katie says:

Rashida jones’ dress looks like a bad hospital gown

  23. poppy says:

RJ’s dress is really wonderful but cut too long in the in the chest.
sound like a broken record but it seems like 70% of these dresses were never scaled to the person wearing it. the blue band should have been placed right below her bosoms. that dress would have been my favorite but the fit is pitiful.

julia looks great. it isn’t exciting like RJ’s but it looks really amazing on her. maybe her best dress ever.
