Spanish horror filmmaker Juan Antonio Bayona to direct third Twilight movie

The second movie in the Twilight franchise, New Moon, has a lot riding on it. The studio must be confident that it will bring in the big bucks, because they have already agreed to produce a third, based on the third book in Meyer’s series, Eclipse. Chris Weitz, who is replacing Catherine Hardwicke as director for the second movie, did not sign on for the third, and the search has been on to find a director. There have been a lot of names flying around – Drew Barrymore and Paul Weitz (Chris’ brother) were just two possible directors mentioned – but the producers have finally settled on Juan Antonio Bayona, a protege of Hellboy director Guillermo Del Toro, and recently the director of the Spanish-language horror film The Orphanage.

Summit, which had no comment Wednesday, is expected to make the official announcement soon. The minimajor recently gave “Eclipse” a release date of June 30, 2010.

Summit’s opted for a different director on each “Twilight” pic. Chris Weitz replaced “Twilight” director Catherine Hardwicke on “New Moon.” Production’s due to start shortly on “New Moon” with the key thesps — Robert Pattinson as Edward, Kristen Stewart as Bella and Taylor Lautner as Jacob — reprising their roles.

“New Moon” is set to open Nov. 20. Melissa Rosenberg, who penned the “Twilight” and “New Moon” scripts, is working on “Eclipse,” in which Bella is forced to choose between Edward and Jacob. The four books in Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight” series have sold more than 17 million copies worldwide.

The turn-around for this movie is very short, considering that they are just now beginning to film the second, so they’ve probably secured a director this early in the game so that they can begin planning it now. Though this is a series and there is plot continuity between the movies (they have kept the same screenwriter), they have decided to change directors for each movie, which means that the visual aspects probably won’t be similar.

Eclipse is a much darker book than the first two, so they probably made the right decision not to use Drew Barrymore. She’s great and I can’t wait for her new film, Whip It!, to come out, but I feel that she would have only added star power, and not necessarily done much for the movie itself. I also imagine her creating a lighter feel than a movie about vampires demands. A horror director, especially one of Bayona’s imaginative capacity, will be able to create the sense of gritty danger and reality that some reviews said were lacking from the first movie.

I still haven’t seen Twilight. I’m sure I’ll rent it on dvd soon. However, I am a huge fan of Guillermo del Toro with his work in Hell Boy II and Pan’s Labryinth. If the second movie is anything like del Toro’s past works, it will definitely be a hit.

    third movie*

I saw The Orphanage. It was alright.

Ash Guillermo del Toro isn’t the one directing the 3rd movie, Juan Antonio Bayona is.

I loved the Orphanage (which is getting an American remake since it was so successful in Spain) and I don’t usually watch horror movies because they either scare me too much or gross me out with all the blood and violence. If you watch the movie in the dark… which is what I did… prepare to get the pants scared off of you!
I hope this Spanish guy will bring his scary horror vision to Eclipse, the movie definitely needs it!

No I know that, it said he was under the direction of del Toro, so I hoped it would be like the movies he made. Sorry for the confusion.

Baho: Agreed. Nothing earth shattering, but it kept me entertained for the most part. I was, however, really impressed with the actress who played the mother.

That being said, I’d rather endure a root canal than subject myself to the Twilight franchise, so my thoughts on the director are of no consequence.

I loved The Orphanage. So simple in its suspense. I will not ever see this Twilight crap, so I hope he does a good job, but I hope he’s getting major euro’s for this stuff

Hate to say it, but, who? No, really, who? Until I looked at his IMDb page or saw this article, I had never heard of him or his movies.

    Not much faith.

I’m such a huge fan of the books! And for the most part the casting for the movie was perfect! But I have to admit the first movie was NOT good. It felt rushed and almost generic compared to the book. I just hope the next movies are better b/c the books and story is soooo great! I’ll watch the movie a million times b/c of Robert!!!! But, it could have been soooo much better!

A protege of the man I wanted to direct Deathly Hallow? Hmmm, this will be very interesting. The series is complete trash, so it’s not like the guy is going to have a world to work with that is as rich as Harry Potter.

God, I get chills down my spine at the very idea of Del Toro making Deathly Hallows. But I bet The Hobbit will be mind blowing.

Mmm.. we’ll see. Actually, there should be a pretty good action scene in this movie. Who better than a horror director to direct a battle between vampires and/or werewolves. (I remember who the “bad” guy was but not who the “good” guys were.

Ash you should watch Twilight for free somewhere or borrow oe of your friend’s dvds when it comes out.

Twilight is so campy and ridiculous…The dumbassery of Bella’s character; the stalker creepiness of Edward; the oddly bad acting…it’s just wonderful. It’s a great movie to laugh at with your friends. 🙂

Having seen The Orphanage, then I definitely think he will be the right director for the 3rd film. The Orphanage was brilliant, a good mystery/suspence film, with tinges of horror. It was a film that stays with you afterwards while you try to figure out bits and pieces. There was more to it than what appeared on the surface.

Haven’t seen Twilight yet, it looks kind of awful, but maybe this director can take the sequel up several notches.

  14. FF says:

Yeaaaaah! A different director for each film – like I hoped!

First film was not good. Casting was good, music was good. Script and directing totally let it down. They need to keep the films the same as the books, from the POV of the characters narrating.

I mean, seriously, it’s not like Twilight – the book – was War and Peace, they could have fit so much more into the movie instead it was totally limp with zero visual style or humour (yes, the book actually had a few moments of that).
