Daniel Radcliffe deemed ‘not marketable’ without his English accent: true?

Daniel Radcliffe

Everyone likes Daniel Radcliffe. Let me rephrase that — nobody dislikes Daniel Radcliffe. He never fell into the perils of child stardom other than a love affair with alcohol which seems to have quieted down. Dan keeps to himself unless he’s promoting something. He’s plugging the What If? UK DVD release. We already talked about how Dan pressured producers to change the film’s previous title, The Friend Zone, because he felt it was “sexist.”

Dan has a new interview with the Sunday Express. He talks about why this movie is different from other romcoms. Producers did make him use his English accent in lieu of a Canadian twang. What I find more interesting is how Dan says he’s rejected several good action films:

Why he picked this movie: “With actors, the only time we talk about one genre versus another is when we’re promoting a film and discussing it with journalists. It certainly doesn’t factor in my thought process when I’m picking a role. You’re not thinking, ‘I want to do a romantic comedy, so only show me romcoms from now on.’ You’re just looking for a good script and when What If? came along, I’d already read a few romcoms and it just stood out to me. I wanted to be part of it.”

He had to ditch the “Canadian twang”: “It was basically, ‘You’re not marketable without your English accent,’ which is bad news for all the other stuff I’ve done with American accents. It was one of those ridiculous last-minute panics on their behalf, but I certainly wasn’t going to go, ‘Well, screw you guys, I’m going to put 200 people out of work for the sake of an accent.'”

He’s rejected action roles: “A couple of quite good action films have come my way. But there’s never a fresh character involved in any of those films. It’s just the same people thrown into different cities with different casts. I like action movies and I feel there used to be lots of really witty ones, like Die Hard and Lethal Weapon and the Bourne movies, but the good ones are few and far between now.”

His girlfriend, Erin Darko: “I’m in a relationship with my best friend and that’s how it should be.”

[From S Magazine – The Sunday Express]

It’s hard not to agree with the assessment over Daniel’s accent – if you look at his box-office record, the receipts drop off steeply when Dan abandons his posh voice. I’m not even including the Harry Potter movies. I think Dan’s not that good at picking projects because he doesn’t have to worry about money. This doesn’t mean he has to shy away from blockbusters, right? He would have been very welcome in the recent The X-Men movies, or almost any studio project.

He definitely sounds different. Has he done working class accents?

  2. Wren33 says:

While I think there have been some great superhero movies recently, my impression is that modern action movies are focused more on mind-blowing explosions and visuals as opposed to witty banter. But, I haven’t seen many movies in the past 5 years, so I don’t really know what I am talking about.

  3. Alexandra says:

He’s just so refreshing from all the other tools we talk about in Hollywood.

  4. sodizzy says:

No. Smart and charming. He wins always.

  5. Eleonor says:

I think he is in the position to work only on projects he really likes (he doesn’t need money) If I could choose I’d do the same.

    • Josefa says:

Yeah, that what I like about him. I feel everything about Daniel is very authentic. He truly likes the movies he’s made and he doesn’t need to put any act.

      • Lucinda says:

I think he may surprise us in the future. He is choosing things that interest him, probably things that are quite different from Harry Potter because it is natural to want to broaden your experiences. But once he has satisfied this exploratory phase, I think he may blossom into a truly charismatic actor able to carry a film and create dynamic characters. He is still young and, while I haven’t seen any of his post-Potter work, the trailers never really entice me. He doesn’t have that “it” factor for me yet. But give him time. He certainly seems intelligent enough. He simply lacks the gravitas that comes with age and experience.

  6. OSTONE says:

I absolutely love him. Maybe the fact I kinda grew up with him.. but I would hit it so hard.

  7. kri says:

I adore him. I think he is truly talented, and he works for his fims. He’s a good egg.

  8. jenn12 says:

He’s sexy and smart, which I guess isn’t as marketable as loudmouthed and not that bright.

  9. Erinn says:

I want more Dan Rad – I don’t care if he comes with an accent or without. I love him, and I want him to take my money. I’d rather hand it over to his projects than those of most other actors.

I love him, he never gives a bad interview. “It was one of those ridiculous last-minute panics on their behalf, but I certainly wasn’t going to go, ‘Well, screw you guys, I’m going to put 200 people out of work for the sake of an accent.” —> Let me repeat: I LOVE HIM!!!

I don’t know if he’s not marketable without the accent but why even try? It’s glorious.

  11. scout says:

“not picking the right projects” is the problem, I agree. English accent or not.

  12. Sixer says:

What posh voice?! He hasn’t got a posh voice.

I really like little Dan. I think he’s got limited talent if I’m honest, but I think he’s making choices that ring true for him. Good on him.

    • mimif says:

Psss…Most Americans don’t really know what posh means, we think it’s just a Spice.

      • BaeOnBoard says:

Yes, good job speaking for all of us. **eye roll**

      • Sixer says:

Hey! Don’t diss the mimif! It’s just an ongoing banter about transatlantic language blunders. Plus jokes. Like Spice.

      • mimif says:

All Americans are stoOpid. THANKS OBAMA. (And thanks Sixah for trying to explain my fabulous sense of humour as well.)

    • Felice says:

He is a public school boy though right? Not that there’s anything wrong with that. It’s just where people seem to get the posh thing from. He’s definitely very humble which is great. I’m glad he has settled down on his drinking. Wasn’t he also chain smoking during Harry Potter too? Even if it affected his appearance, it works since Harry kinda goes through a lot over the course of the series lol.

    • Sixer says:

He’s kind of from a chattering classes/metropolitan middle class background: not “posh” like Cumbersquatch and Hiddlesburp and Redmayne and Firth. My accent is pretty much the same as his – standard south east England – and I am definitely not posh!

      @mimif – I am Snarky Spice.

    • *North*Star* says:

Dan was very good in ‘What If’ and fantastic in ‘Kill Your Darlings’. He’s becoming a much better actor with each film.

  13. FingerBinger says:

Maybe producers don’t want a short action star and they’re using his accent as an excuse.

  14. Insomniac says:

I adore him, no matter what accent he’s using. He just seems so down to earth and non-entitled compared to so many other celebrities.

  15. Green Is Good says:

DanRad can do any damn movie he wants. He certainly doesn’t need the money.

  16. blue marie says:

No, he’s a cutie. I liked him in Horns and I don’t remember him having an accent..

  17. Tig says:

I will prob check out this movie, and want to see Horns. I can’t see him in an action movie tho. He always comes across great in print interviews, and I have the utmost respect for him doing a musical on B’way.

  18. original kay says:

Rachel Weisz is another one who totally changes without her accent, she’s flat and boring without it.

  19. Em says:

    i saw a
photo of him today on some website, and it just hit me how terrific he would be as Edward Snowden in the upcoming movie about him. I think he would nail it – WITH an American accent of course 🙂

  20. jammypants says:

He was wonderful in Kill Your Darlings. What If is an annoying movie.

  21. Josa says:

Don’t think there’s anything wrong with his choice of projects, they are just small scale and independent, but they aren’t bad. He has the options to choose whatever he wants, since he’s already very rich and very well-known. I like his choices. But I can’t quite imagine he gets offered action hero stuffs, he still looks like a boy and he’s a bit too short to be imposing.

  22. Annaliese says:

I thought he was terrific in The Woman in Black and in My Boy Jack. Those are the main things I’ve seen him in, other than the HP movies. I think he’s done a wide variety of things because he can do what interests him, on stage as well as film, and it really doesn’t matter if they’re blockbusters or not. Good for him.
