Tom Cruise has been filming Mission: Impossible 5 – Is Ethan Hunt Retired Yet? in London forever. This photo captures a moment before Tom supposedly almost got run over in real life, but it was only a stunt for the movie. Nobody runs over Tom Cruise, not physically anyway.
Only last week, the new documentary, Going Clear, premiered at Sundance and revealed the CO$ engineered collapse of the Kidman-Cruise marriage. Tom stayed quiet during the discussion. He knows better than to stick his finger into glib Matt Lauer’s face anymore.
The Liftmaster has a different focus right now than public CO$ attack mode. Page Six says he’s on the prowl for a new kind of role. Tom the adrenaline junkie has been stuck in action mode for the past several years. Is there more out there for Tom besides OT Level VIII Scientology paradise? Well … Tom Cruise has never won an Oscar. He’s been nominated three times (for Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire, and Magnolia), but he’s never captured the gold.
How badly does Tom want to capture that little statuette? Very much so. According to Page Six, Tom will gain weight in order to play Barry Seal, the 300-pound, drug- and gun-trafficking pilot for 1980s cartels and the CIA. Sources don’t know whether Tom will gain help from a Tropic Thunder-esque fat suit, but Tom is expected to gain “a significant amount.” Doug Liman (Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Edge of Tomorrow) has taken over for Ron Howard as director, which is interesting. Liman primarily directs action, but Tom seems to be aiming for more with this role.
Will this be an awards contender? I can’t see any other reason for Cruise to move out of his mega-physical comfort zone. Tom’s been in action-hero rotation forever, and now he’s changing up his career strategy. Then maybe he’ll cash in on Kirstie Alley’s Weight Watcher’s connection. Be careful, or those volcanoes full of Thetans are going to blow from all the awesomeness.

I get doing things for a role, but I think gaining a lot of weight and losing a lot of weight is a really stupid thing to do. It’s so dangerous. Just put on a fat suit, it doesn’t make you less dedicated as an artist.

I don’t think he would risk it either. While watching MI:4 I kept getting distracted by his bubble butt, because he’s supposed to be pretty fit in that role. I kept wondering if that’s where his mid-life weight gain is gravitating. Some guys get the beer belly, maybe others get a beer butt.
Yes the gain/loss thing is not healthy, and at his age, it is not going to come off as easily as it has in the past. I know I’m in the minority here, but I like Tom Cruise as an actor. I like his movies, and if his performance is Oscar worthy, I hope he is able to get one. I don’t care for his religion or his real life personality and antics, but as an actor, I respect his work, even though it’s primarily been geared toward action and entertainment.

I like him as an actor as well. I didn’t realise this until recently when we noticed that we tend to watch his movies when they’re on TV and to quite enjoy them. He makes entertaining movies and that is part of the point of hollywood, to entertain, surely?
Totally agree. He’s crazy as a loon, but he’s damn good at his job. It’s also commonly reported by those working with him that he really gives it his all, going well above and beyond for every scene. I respect that.

Cruise is not an excellent actor. He’ s decent. However, he is usually entertaining in his movies, even if he has a very limited range. DiCaprio is the same (but less entertaining), but I know I am in the minority in this: most people think he’ s an acting god.
I also like him as an actor. He was always good in my opinion.
He deserved the nominations for Born On The 4th Of July and Magnolia. He was so great in Magnolia.
Leo’s early work was better than his recent work. He seems to just play the same character over and over these days. A self-satisfied lunatic. It’s too bad because I do think he did some really good stuff early on but now he is just riding on his reputation.
Tom was never a great actor. He just did well with a few great roles that were edited really well. In the films where he has more artistic control, he is very one-dimensional.
Leo does nothing for me. He can be really good, but I never seek out a movie to see him. I really liked him in Shutter Island. I am in the minority, I guess, but he doesn’t draw me to movies the way some actors do. Now, I will go to the movie if I hear it is a good movie.
^^Yes. Leo was brilliant and impassioned in his younger years and it earned him the informal title “the greatest actor of our generation”. Maybe it’s all gone to his head or maybe he’s just an incredibly lazy guy but I’m with you in that he’s been resting on his laurels way too long.
Tom Cruise, as the misogynistic motivational speaker with a tortured heart, in the film Magnolia should have won an Oscar. In general, I love his passion, intensity and, some may say, insanity. He has his opinions, but he’s, basically, harmless. Without people like that, what a bore This would be!

Ugh. Tell that to the thousands of people that have joined scientology over the years in part because they were inspired by him. Scientology, the money grubbing, spirit sucking cult that forces their most dedicated to endure hard labor when they’ve fallen out of line or questioned authority.

I think the only really noteworthy performance I’ve seen from him was Magnolia. But he’s good, yeah. Very charismatic back in the day before he was known as a batsh*t crazy couch jumping cultist. He’s just not good enough on screen to separate him from his public persona, hence his box office flops.

Cruise was desperately trying for an Oscar earlier in his career, then switched to action hero mode. His stuff was always really baity and he had an attitude that he was owed something. Looks like he is heading back to those days.

I have no problem separating his work from his personal life. I always enjoy his movies( except Knight and Day). And he’s a good actor. He was great in Valkyrie and Collateral. Anyway, hasn’t he donned a fat suit in Tropic Thunder?

It was the completely melt down he had about 10 years ago… where he just showed off how batsh*t crazy he is… that made it hard to see past that image now.
And sadly, Cruise has not done anything publicly to make me think that he is sane.
Add to it that Katie Holmes had to build an elaborate escape plan, to leave him. So she could keep her child out of the clutches of the Cult.
It is those little public moments that make it hard to see him buried in a character. He is a character in his own self created daily drama, of a life style. Where he believes that everyone else is crazy and not enlighten to his Truth!
But I will say… the whole story about Barry Seal… is off the rails crazy. I can see why it is making the rounds.
There has been a documentary running on Showtime for the last couple months… Cocaine Cowboys… that covers the whole drug packed history of the cocaine trade and Miami. Which includes some vintage interviews of Barry Seal. Well worth the watch, if you have the time. It is filled with great interviews of the men, who were significant part of the the whole Miami drug trade, from the dealers to the cops.

and I saw enough of this guy and his back story in that documentary…I don’t know why we need a fictionalized version of his story. he wasn’t even the most interesting part of the story.

Well that’s been Christian Bale shtick for some time (as well as many other actors) and the Academy seems to love nominating them for it. Though as others have pointed out it would be very dangerous to do that, but maybe that’s the angle. Actors love to go on and on about how much bodily harm they put themselves through because they were so dedicated to bring their character to life.

300 lbs?? That is a huge amount of weight to gain. I can’t even imagine trying to lose that after the fact. I do think he would do it, though, he is obsessed with doing his own stunts and all of that, so I could totally see him wanting the weight gain to be real and going for it.
It must gall him no end that Nicole got her Oscar for a serious film that starred top-notch actors.

Since you bought up the issue of race, it occurred to me that I’ve never seen a black actor ot actress gain weight to win an Oscar. It’s not a common route actors take but am I right in thinking it’s never been done before?
The only film he’s been actually good in was Collateral with Jamie Foxx. He’s been decent but not great in everything else. Say what you will about his acting but he has charisma, screen presence and a big box office draw. The same can’t be said for a lot of Hollywood actors.

He’s a decent actor, but he comes from the RIchard Gere school of blinking too much when emoting.
Ironically, I think he and Richard Gere should have done more comedies, they both seem to have a nice comedic touch to a lot of their roles.

In my opinion, Cruise is an ok actor, always trying a bit too hard. I don’t really dislike him, but wouldn’t go to a movie to see HIM. I think his performance in Jerry Maguire was really good. He seems to be a very energetic guy, and oftentimes comes over tense. I think he’s very competitive as well. I hope he won’t gain that kind of weight, it’s really dangerous. No award is worth that. Look at McConaughey, he never looked the same again.
