Kristen Stewart’s new mullet-y Chanel handbag ad: lovely or dead-eyed?

kristen1

This ^ is the print ad for Kristen Stewart’s latest Chanel campaign. A while back, Karl Lagerfeld made her the face of Chanel’s Paris-Dallas collection, and that campaign was a mess. But Karl liked Kristen so much, he chose her to take part in the latest Chanel handbag advertising. Kristen is one of a trio of faces, including Vanessa Paradis and Alice Della. You can see the other ads here at Chanel’s Twitter. I swear I follow fashion but Alice Della is a complete unknown to me.

Kristen models Chanel’s new 11.12 bag, which is just a slightly updated version of the classic quilted Chanel purse with a chain shoulder strap. The most notable thing about this image is probably that Kristen’s hair is totally different here. She hasn’t had a rock n’ roll mullet since she filmed The Runaways, years ago! For what it’s worth, I always thought the mullet sort of suited her, and I guess Karl Lagerfeld agreed (he shot this campaign). He must have demanded that she wear mullet-y extensions.

What else is going on with K-Stew? Well, she’s not just going to be sitting around her LA loft, working on art projects and making short films about water. Kristen signed on to an untitled drama also starring Laura Dern and Michelle Williams. K-Stew will be playing “a lawyer from Boise, Idaho, who takes a teaching job several hours from her house.” The film is set in Montana. Which means there probably won’t be a lot of pap photos. Which is fine.

Chanel also released this video of Kristen looking down and then looking into the camera. I don’t know… she’s a pretty girl, but she does tend to look pretty dead-eyed, even in motion.

I think she looks pretty. She’s closed off, not dead eyed. DeadEyes =Kadashians or Paris Hilton

    • Div says:

I was going to say the same thing sort of..the Dallas pics were fine but sort of dead eye and the whole line was just awful. In this pic, however, she looks relaxed, stylish, and not at all dead eyed. Night and day. Also, way better than Blake Lively’s brief Chanel gig. Vanessa and Alice look amazing too. This is the first time in a long time that I’ve liked Karl’s photography.

    • Camille (The Original) says:

I agree with you Kaley. I think she looks great.

  2. JWQ says:

Dead eyes definitely, but they are appropriate for the black and white photo. I think that is the best she has ever looked.

  3. Gill B says:

I’d say she looks disengaged rather than dead-eyed – which is part of her indie cool vibe, so to speak. As an actress and a model, she’s not very expressive. However, her detachment is part of her attraction, I guess – it suggests an edgy interiority that directors like Kelly Reichardt and fashion houses like Chanel go for.

  4. Snazzy says:

I want to see the Vanessa Paradis ad! The bag is much nicer, and she’s a better Chanel model 🙂

Note: Sorry just saw the ad at work this morning and I am now obsessed with the Chanel gym bag. Will never be able to afford it but a girl can dream right?

  5. JKL says:

    Looks like Katherine Moennig.

  6. Belle Epoch says:

Did anybody notice Julianne Moore thanked K-Stew at the Oscars but not Bobblehead Kate Bosworth?

    • Diana B says:

I did, I did! I also commented that on the post about her winning. It made me giddy that Bosworth got no mention whatsoever.

      • Foofoo says:

        I should’ve commented here, but I’m new.
        What’s this thing with Moore/Bosworth/Stewart?

  7. Allie says:

How ever will Kristen Stewart play Kristen Stewart pretending to be a lawyer becoming a teacher? Because she doesn’t act as the character, she acts as what she believes Kristen Stewart would act as the character. She’s so deep.

  8. SamiHami says:

Total dead eyes. I don’t get why she’s a thing. She’s a terrible actress and has no personality. How does she keep getting hired?

  9. AntiSocialButterfly says:

Is it really mullet-y? I see it as more of an exaggerated shag. FWIW, I do think it suits her, in no small part because it covers up those DEAD(bored as f*ck) EYES.

    • Samtha says:

Yeah, a mullet is long in back and short in front. That looks like it’s angled the opposite way–slightly longer in front.

    • Judy says:

Yeah, it looks like a modern, minimalist take on the shag; a la Jane Fonda in Klute. Kristen’s a very pretty girl, she has good bone structure and, like the Joan Jett hair, I think this hair style suits her far better than her long hair. I actually thought the Chanel Dallas pics were well done, sepia colored western vibes. The Dallas clothes on the other hand were mind boggling, too artsy for real wearability, but maybe that was the point?

      • Caliburnfaire says:

Yep, it’s a shag. NOT a mullet. It is layered all over. I think it looks great on her.

  10. Dash says:

I am still confused about Kristen and Chanel. Who does she appeal to?

    • mia girl says:

Stewart looks pretty bored in the ad, so maybe the target audience is bored people, with money.

    • sally says:

I dont understand why in the world Chanel has K. Stew as their model. Doesn’t Chanel represent chicness, timelessness, upper east side ladies…? Kristen makes people clutch their chanel pearls… or at least makes me clutch my fake ones. To me, she’s such a mess. She can’t act, comes off as a moody bitch , her street style is that of a teenage boy, looks like she needs a constant good soapy scrub down. I can’t believe she’ represents such a prestigious brand.

      • oneshot says:

I agree she’s a tryhard and not nearly as cool as past Chanel models including Selma Blair and Keira Knightley (or even Vanessa). They do like the young and cool image for models too.

Also 25 is old enough to have grown out of your “I’m so edgy and twitchy” phase but the teenage boy street style aesthetic (Kstew) still >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> porno Barbie/blond Kardashian aesthetic (Lively). I mean, they’re both downmarket for Chanel but Stewart’s slightly less downmarket. At least Chanel employees aren’t complaining about how she cheapens their image, the way they did when Lively got the campaign.

    • oneshot says:

      “Who does she appeal to?”

The tween demographic that made her franchise a huge success. Same with Jennifer Lawrence and Dior.

And even those are more acceptable than – I want to vomit as I type this – Justin Bieber for Calvin Klein. Way to make sure I never give those brands my money again (not that I would for Dior anyway, the Raf-era stuff is so lacking)

  11. dr mantis toboggan says:

She looks like she’s dressed up as mummy going to work. All that’s missing is the pearls and oversized heels

  12. mint says:

I mean you link to Chanels Twitter Account but you still can´t manage to get Alice DellaLs name right?! Lazy!

  13. MeToo says:

I think it’s Alice Dellal no? Her brother, Alex Dellal used to date Charlotte Casiraghi and her other sister is the designer Charlotte Olympia

    • oneshot says:

yeah that’s her. Used to dress like a hot mess but inspired a Chanel bag which I actually like a lot better than the 2.55 and the one Kstew is carrying (most expensive thing I have ever owned but I love it).

  14. Cecada says:

I love her styling here; but I can’t help but note that she rarely uses purses. She’s a backpack kinda gal. Just sayin

  15. Tig says:

I get its a Chanel bag- but shouldn’t the focus of an ad for a bag BE the bag? It’s hardly noticeable here. Still wish he put his cat in an ad- talk about an air of superiority-LOL!!

  16. Delta Juliet says:

She has apathy down to an art.

  17. OhDear says:

She looks pretty but bored as hell here.

    LOVE the hair.

  18. Sullivan says:

    Gorgeous

  19. Message says:

I think she looks gorgeous. Completely dead-eyed (per usual), but very pretty.

  20. How sad, she looks depressed.

  21. Katie says:

    Not her best shoot.

  22. Mi says:

She looks high as a kite.I hope her crazy stans will buy these ugly handbags.LOL

  23. serena says:

I really love these photos. That hairstyle suit her a lot! I’m really liking her these days!

  24. Prim & Proper says:

Why do people keep writing that KS has dead eyes? I recently saw some photos of her that showed how beautiful her eyes really are, a lovely sparkling deep green. I guess it’s all to do with the lighting.

    • oneshot says:

      Eye colour =/= expression.

She’s a beautiful young woman when she has some animation in her face, but most of the time she doesn’t, hence the ‘dead eyes’ comments.

  25. mädchen says:

I love it! I think she is perfect as Chanels Model. For me, the house of Chanel is timeless chic and fashion forward at the same time. But not typical anything. Coco was not typical also. Unique, different for sure but not typical. That’s who K is IMO too.
What I like the most is how different K looks in what Chanel is styling her: Cool &almost sporty at their show, stunningly elegant at Cesar and dinner, with 2 absolutely different looks but the same effect, very business chic here.
When she was announced as their ambassador, at first there was some negativity, no one expected it for sure. But now she proved that she definitely belongs. Also, Chanel & KL wouldn’t work with her again if it wasn’t the case. By that I mean mutual sympathy and profitability.

  26. Maria A. says:

You open a magazine these days and that’s almost all you see: someone familiar or glamorously tall and lean holding someone’s overrated leather bag or tote in some awkwardly obvious manner.
    It’s getting tedious.
Since I’m against fur and leather, I stick to cloth messenger bags, but that is also because I need something that can carry my sketchbooks, writing projects, etc. You know, a serious bag.

  27. Kim says:

I really like Kristen’s ad! She probably keeps getting hired, because she makes money for companies.

  28. Siren6 says:

That’s a shaggy angled bob, which is the opposite of a mullet. She looks great!

  29. Jojar Pinks says:

never been a fan of kstew but i think this is the best shes looked tbh.

  30. Naddie says:

Always bored, always looking uninterested, but her face never fails to catch my eyes. I’m still impressed how much the Bella character made her look plain and barely cute, when in fact she’s beautiful with amazing eyes.

  31. Caz says:

Kristen looks really good. In comparison, Keira’s coco lipstick ads are contrived and vague.

  32. Foofoo says:

Hi all, me lurk you long time 😉

Did I miss something about K Bosworth? Does Julianne not like her or something? Explain me!

  33. moon says:

I like her. She’s a much better choice than the travesty that was Blake Lively, at least.
