Waka Flocka cancels University of Okla show after racist frat video (update)

Waka Flocka

Rapper Waka Flocka Flame performed for OU’s Sigma Alpha Epsilon chapter last May, but he won’t be doing it again. I live in Oklahoma where bedlam battles between OU and OSU dominate much of the sports talk. It’s not often this state makes national news, and this is not the desired way to do it. You’ve probably heard about the video featuring a busful of OU SAE brothers chanting, “There will never be a n*** in SAE.” With a reference to lynching too. You can see the video on Twitter without a shoutout to OU President David Boren. Action came swiftly and with zero tolerance. Boren kicked the fraternity brothers out of their house and released the following statement:

To those who have misused their free speech in such a reprehensible way, I have a message for you. You are disgraceful. You have violated all that we stand for. You should not have the privilege of calling yourselves “Sooners.” Real Sooners are not racist. Real Sooners are not bigots. Real Sooners believe in equal opportunity. Real Sooners treat all people with respect. Real Sooners love each other and take care of each other like family members.

Effective immediately, all ties and affiliations between this University and the local SAE chapter are hereby severed. I direct that the house be closed and that members will remove their personal belongings from the house by midnight tomorrow. Those needing to make special arrangements for positions shall contact the Dean of Students.

All of us will redouble our efforts to create the strongest sense of family and community. We vow that we will be an example to the entire country of how to deal with this issue. There must be zero tolerance for racism everywhere in our nation.

[From University of Oklahoma on Facebook]

Boren made his decision to close the house without hesitation. Good. The frat boys are without a house, which is all that Boren can do (speech codes usually don’t hold up under the 1st amendment) without getting sued. SAE also released an official statement to close its OU chapter, saying the fraternity is “disgusted” and “embarrassed” at the brothers’ behavior. Oh, and there were Tri Delta girls on the bus. Their chapter is investigating too.

There’s more. These SAE boys booked Waka Flocka for a performance at their frat house later this month! The rapper cancelled his appearance with this Instagram caption: “SMFH.. I know for a fact the whole school and SAE don’t agree with those kids actions so know that I’m not madd at the whole #SAE just those disgusting kids!!!!!! #WFF We can’t change history but we damn sure can create our own future #DeathToRacism” Here’s more of Waka Flocka’s message.

UPDATE: Surprise, surprise. OU has expelled two students in light of this scandal. Boren says they can contact the school’s Equal Opportunity Office if they wish to appeal.

How completely disgusting. The president and Waka Flocka both handled it well. But the fact that it happened at all fills me with sorrow.

    • Esmom says:

Agree that they both handled it well. As I said just below, I am completely disgusted, too. And not entirely surprised now that I reflect on it a bit more. I went to a large university with a big Greek system and many fraternities were cesspools of entitlement, conformity, exclusion and intolerance. Sad to hear that apparently not much has changed in decades.

    • Sunnyside says:

I take hope from the fact that it was not tolerated. The fact that so many are reacting with complete disgust and horror makes me happy. No one is sweeping this under the rug! It’s freakijg great to see an example being made of the disgusting people who did this.

    • Kiddo says:

      Post racial society, my ass.

      • StripedSea says:

Exactly. And you know these *ssholes are the first to throw out “you’re playing the race card” whenever someone mentions a legit experience, or claim that since we’ve got a black president the situation is either A – post-racial, or B – that any racial stirring-up is all due to Obama himself. So sad and scary to think these jackasses are this nation’s future lawyers, police officers, judges, etc. And many are probably the sons/grandsons of such as well.

      • mimif says:

        +1
I was (finally) watching 12 Years A Slave when my bf read me this news, and time stopped for a minute. It was grotesquely surreal to hear what he was saying while watching 2 young black men get lynched in the 1840-50’s. Post-racial society my ass, indeed.

    • doofus says:

the president of the U is talking expulsion, and that a suspension would send the wrong message.

I hope they’re expelled and then they’ll have to explain to any potential employer why. good luck with that.

these people are NOT “kids”, they are adults and need to be treated/punished as adults; they need to learn there are consequences for the (stupid) decisions they make and that having a bigoted attitude won’t get you very far in life (except Greek life, apparently. oh, and maybe Fox News.).

      • lucy2 says:

I think it was the university president I heard, stated he was so disgusted with them and didn’t want them anywhere around his school, he’d buy them bus tickets to somewhere. I am disgusted this happened, but thankful the response has been swift and strict, and that everyone is standing up to this repulsive bigotry and saying no.

      • katy says:

At one point someone asked the president if there would be any help for those displaced students, and he replied “we don’t offer assistance to racists and bigots.” Bravo.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

I just don’t understand how someone could use that word. I just don’t get how anyone could think that was even remotely ok.

      • ORLY says:

…and it’s not only the use of the N word, they sing about hanging too.

      • FLORC says:

        ORLY
The lynching part of that song was horrible. The whole thing was, but that part seemed unthinkable.

      • StripedSea says:

I searched further online and saw this is nothing new to this particular frat. I saw a flyer for some party they threw back in 1982 in “celebration” of MLK, where admittance to the party would be allowed only if an attendee brought along one of several items on the list, including things like a watermelon, a bucket of chicken, a spear, a basketball, a “native” piece of clothing, a picture of James Earl Ray(!!!), a canceled welfare check, and “your father…if you know who he is.”

        https://twitter.com/MichelleHux/status/574925442366500864

Many others are saying they attended schools in other states where this particular frat was on campus and they’d heard this chant many times before; it was something memorized and shouted with vigor so it was certainly not a spur-of-the-moment or new thing for these guys to do.

      • Esmom says:

StripedSea, omg. Although the one thing that was clear to me was that the song wasn’t new or spur of the moment, you could tell it was a tradition of sorts. I feel sick.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

DUDE. That list!! I don’t know why I’m shocked, but I am.

      • Me44 says:

It’s been reported that there is also video of their 79 year old house mother chanting racial slurs too.

      • StripedSea says:

Me44 – this is true as well. She claimed she had no idea any of these racist attitudes were going on in the house or that she always thought they were all good boys, then video surfaced from 2 years ago, I think, of her repeatedly chanting the n-word. A GoFundMe page had been set up for her (because she also lost her job as the frat was shut down) but once the video surfaced it was removed.

      • bettyrose says:

This is secondary but I also don’t get how anyone thinks their jackass stunts won’t end up on YouTube. You do not have to be a celebrity to have your “youthful indiscretions” haunt you online.

    • Jess says:

Totally agree. Can’t believe there are still young people that are so horribly, viciously racist. But at least institutional support for such racism is slowly going away (I know it’s not all gone, but I was impressed by the OU official response).

What does Waka think about black on black crime?

Mississippi State QB Dak Prescott — Cut and Bloodied At Waka Flocka Concert (VIDEO)
      Dak Prescott
      Cut and Bloodied
      In Spring Break Brawl
3/9/2015 8:53 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

QB Dak Prescott and 2 other Mississippi State football players were attacked outside a Spring Break concert in Panama City and the video of the brawl is insane.

Prescott and his teammates were jumped at a Waka Flocka show when the chaos erupted. In the video … Prescott — a leading Heisman candidate for next season — is on the ground getting stomped and seems totally dazed.

According to several Bulldogs blogs the attack was unprovoked and the injuries are not serious — Prescott’s face looks pretty messed up though.

Police have not arrested anyone yet.

      • StripedSea says:

What do *you* think of white-on-white crime? Or Asian-on-Asian crime? Crime is crime; stop with the nonsensical race-baiting bullsh*t. Most crime against a person of a certain race is committed by someone else of the same race. Your post is irrelevant and your mindset is destructive and ignorant.

      • Olenna says:

Well said, StripedSea. I’m so sick of this deflection tactic.

  2. Esmom says:

I just heard about this on the radio, utterly disgusting. I have been telling my husband for a years that we will not encourage our sons to join fraternities in college, I’ve long thought that nothing good comes out of many of them. This is more proof.

    • MrsB says:

Totally agree! A university in my state has been getting bad press because a young man died last year due to hazing, and in December another frat had a “cripmas party,” which of course was completely racist. And people pay money for this?!? Boggles my mind why anybody would want to join a fraternity or sorority.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

I’ve always thought that frats are gross.

      • QQ says:

So have I Kitten, also THIS http://www.thefrisky.com/2009-06-05/six-scary-facts-about-frat-boys/

I love that the hammer came down quick but I think it has more to do with the public way this came out

Additionally people need to understand that for context Most Frats and Sororities RUN on exclusionary principle and MOST of the exclusion was based on not being ” a well bred white christian” and THAT particular Frat SAE basically their entire origins are on the Confederate Army http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2015/03/09/3631366/racist-chant-frat-long-history-racist-incidents/… The Chant? is known in the other chapters and has for a while (even Reddit a few years back had a post about it from a member from TX) , they only closed OSU cause it became public

      • tifzlan says:

Me too. All of Greek life, to be honest. I knew a guy from Pike and he was the most racist, sexist person i have ever met in my entire life. I didn’t watch the video but i read a story that had the full chant written (censored of course) and there was actually a part where they referenced lynching or “hanging from trees.” I hope all these despicable cretins never see success a day in their life.

      • FLORC says:

        Kitten
These are extreme examples. The bad stuff always makes the news, but think of how many frats/soros that aren’t doing that stuff. Building bonds and helping eachother out while many are on their own for the 1st time in their lives.

I was in a sorority. It was fun. No hazing. And I still keep in touch with them. The worst we got was we had to all sleep in a closet with sleeping bags for 2 nights. It was not a small closet.

I think it’s very unfair to generalize all greek life as bad. My experience was awesome. To add the loca Soros did advocate safety to young girls with lists of what to watch out for. We also had volunteers that were senior members to make sure no one drank too much and was lucid. Safety was a top concern to reduce assaults.

      • littlestar says:

Frats and sororities must be a big thing in the States only. Does anyone know if they have them in European universities?? In Canada (or at least the university I went to), they weren’t a thing at all. Yes the school still had them, but they never seemed to be a prominent thing and no one ever really talked about them. I was friends in my last year of school with a guy who lived in a frat house and I was invited to their year end party – I didn’t end up going. I guess I should have to see what a Canadian frat was all about.

What do fraternities and sororities do anyway? What is their purpose? It seems like it’s mostly an “exclusive club” students try and belong to.

      • FLORC says:

        Littlestar
They’re about community. College is the first time a lot of people are on their own. They make friends and connections for life.
The bad side is it’s a way people will bully others and abuse has happened. That’s not what they are all like. All Sors are exclusive mean girl clubs and all frats and racist assault clubs. That’s not fair to the good chapters. Those are just bad people and pack mentality.

In mine we had study group, dinner parties, group exercises, fundraising, and a buddy system for outside parties. We advocated safety. All pledges and sisters knew the drill. Be kind and polite. Present yourself in a way to elevate the house. And if you see someone being bullied or someone appearing too intoxicated or drugged step in and call security. Before my time, but it was used as a great example. A girl was drugged and the sisters made a circle around her while others got campus security. 2 guys got really aggressive and 1 of the ladies making the circle got hurt.

To add i’ve seen some chapters act poorly and if it wasn’t handled from within it was handled by a Dean.
Closer to home I live not far from a top college. A Frat was investigated every year for “date rape”. They put sheets over their windows and were banned from hosting parties. Every year this happened and the worst they got was a slap on the wrist for a warning. At the start of this current school year there were 3 assaults and the house finally got shut down. Money/influence plays a big role, but commuity pressure and awareness can be a greater force. I think people knew about this frat in the article. They just couldn’t stop social media.

    • lucy2 says:

I think it depends on the fraternity. I went to a very large university and there were some based on shared interests/majors or academics, and I think those might be OK, but the social ones, ugh.
Before going to college I thought I might be interested in a sorority, but then had some experience with one freshman year (they lived on the floor above me and shared a lot of the common spaces) and knew it was not for me.

    • bettyrose says:

Esmom, please also teach your children to always assume their behavior could end up online, where you and grandma will see it (which is a scarier thought than future employers for teens). I know that sounds paranoid but kids need to know how to keep their names off the internet until they’re mature enough to be responsible about it.

  3. Tiffany27 says:

And yet, there are people who still swear up and down that racism doesn’t exist. SMH.
I’m praying for the safety of whoever filmed and released this video.

    • Lb says:

Hey Kanye says racism is over, so it must be true, right? /s

    • Pinky says:

What would they call this? Reverse-reverse racism to get back at the reverse racists for their racism that they unfairly reversed upon them? Any Faux News ‘shippers want to comment?

      • bettyrose says:

        Well put.

      • Santia says:

Faux News won’t bother to cover it, I’m sure. There is no racism. People should stop playing the race card. If you all stopped playing the race card, racism would cease, don’t ya know?

  4. Sunnyside says:

As horrible as these few are I think the over all message has been good… Racist bigots were dealt with immediately and the university took a stand for equality. Racist biggots are the minority and dealt with swiftly… I hate what those few did but the reactions of the many warm my heart. I think that the majority of the world is moving in the right direction!

  5. msw says:

As an OU grad, it makes me sad 🙁 Those asshats don’t speak for me or my friends.

    • Sunnyside says:

OU has handled this very well. I’d say it was a racist university if they tried to cover this up but instead they are cutting it out like a cancer. OU sounds like a good place to be to me!

    • Ksenja says:

Yeah, actually I’d be proud to be an OU grad. I’m very pleased with Mr. Boren’s reaction – swift and merciless, like it should have been . Usually when this stuff happens and statements get issued by institutions I feel like a lot of it is lip service for the PR purposes, but the school seems to actually be disgusted and it’s a bright spot in this mess.

  6. savu says:

Good for him. And good for the officials taking action. These kids will not walk around bragging about being part of SAE in college, and that’s a good thing.

Meanwhile at the university I go to, the only SAE I know is a good friend who’s black. I’m happy to see the fraternity heads address it and say this is unacceptable. Especially because I know for a fact that there are black men in these groups who are “brothers” with all the white ones in it too. A lot of our students are from Chicago, a pretty diverse area. Most of us really just address race in such a nonchalant way. We don’t ignore it, but it’s never fixated on either.

  7. Birdie says:

I always thought he is attractive.

    • LDUB says:

SAME. everyone looks at me crazy for it too.
its looks PLUS his personality. smart/funny.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

Why would people look at you crazy? He’s hot-he’d be hotter without the tattoos though.

      • V4Real says:

When the headline said Waka Flocka, I was waiting for a lot of posters on here to say, who?

I like him but I was disappointed when he joined that ratchet show Love and Hip Hop Atlanta. But you don’t see him coming out of character like the other cast members. He was focused on his career, his now wife , and helping his mother cope with the suicide of his brother. They believed social media played a part in his death claiming that his brother was always trying to defend his family from the horrible things that were said about them on social media. Depression also played a huge role.

Waka looks like a buff Lenny Kravitz.

      • FLORC says:

You saying Lenny isn’t buff? His hotness stems in part from his buffness. And his wacky style…

  8. ToodySezHey says:

I Wokka the dude from Kenan and Kel??

  9. Imo says:

The swift, zero tolerance reaction is to be commended and the sense of outrage at this gives me hope. Now, will the school be willing to dissect this situation and discover what microcosms exist on campus that could have possibly given rise to this?

If we dismiss this as just the reprehensible actions of a bunch of drunken, entitled, frat boy racists we miss the opportunity to uncover more insidious forms of racial microaggression everywhere.

  10. LDUB says:

love FLOCKA. he go hard in tha paint.

  11. Brittney B says:

The president’s setting a beautiful example for other powerful white men: don’t sweep bigotry under the rug. Call it out, forcefully and immediately, and remove privileges when possible. If he follows it up with a sharp focus on campus race relations (things like this are NOT isolated), even better.

That said… I’ve never really looked at pictures of Waka Flocka Flame before. His name always just reminds me of Fozzie from the Muppets, and I never cared to replace that mental image. Now I’m glad I did! He’s a gorgeous man.

    • StripedSea says:

Very well said re: not sweeping things under the rug. It’s simply not enough for those experiencing bigotry to shed light on it; those who have the power to effect change need to show solidarity and not brush things like this off as “taken out of context” or discredit those who are offended as being overly sensitive.

    • Alexis says:

+1 re setting an example for other WM leaders

    • littlestar says:

I was impressed too. He handled it very well. I hope other university presidents take note. There was a big sexism scandal with a Canadian university (Dalhousie) last year, and most people think it was not handled very well by the school.

  12. OSTONE says:

Diagusting and disrespectful! What a bunch of intolerant, dumbass, entitled SOB. I live in the South, where the SEC is a religion and a lot of my acquaintances were in sororities and fraternities.. and let me tell you, you could not find more fake and superficial people, granted not all of them are like that, I am generalizing, however the ones I know, all they do is party, drink, wear too much make up and take pictures to post to social media. They pay thousands of dollars to be in these organizations. And I wish I could hear stories about Greeks doing charity, cleaning their schools, mentoring, tutoring etc.. Nope, its just a social platform.

  13. Yabby says:

I’m a senior at OU and this video is just a glimpse of how racist the Greek system is. As much as I love my school, the campus here is extremely racially divided.

    • Pinky says:

Thank you for posting, Yabby. Why do you think that is?

      • Yabby says:

I think it’s common at big 12 schools. OU has a student population of over 20k students. It’s overwhelming for a lot of freshmen, so the first thing they do is seek out people who look, dress, and talk the same way they do. That’s what makes the Greek lifestyle appealing to so many. It’s sad to me though because I’ve met many great people from backgrounds completely different from mine here at OU. You would think people would broaden their horizons at such a large university, but instead a lot choose to stick to their ‘own kind.’

    • Esmom says:

I went to college almost 30 years ago (yikes) but it was the same way on my campus. The school looked diverse on paper but in reality it was very segregated.

  14. Jan Harf says:

Of course he won’t perform! I doubt anyone will in the future, either. That video was disgusting.
On another note, Waka is a total hottie.

  15. Debbie says:

Well I have to give props to the president of the school and waka they handled it with class. I mean the school went as far as they legally could and did it immediately which is nice to see.

It is sad to think that there is still that hate, ignorance and frankly stupidity in the world. You would have liked to think we were better.

  16. Lucy says:

    Perfectly handled.

  17. MonicaQ says:

I love the dichotomy of inviting a black rapper to preform but blacks aren’t good enough to join their glorified Klan group. These are the same bro-sephs that would be high-fiving the blacks on the football team but quick to toss around the n word when they drop a pass.

I was however disappointed to find in some comment sections (not here obviously) that the topic of all black fraternity and sororities came up and how those were “unfair”. People don’t seem to realize that we created those because of the attitudes present in the video. We weren’t allowed so we made our own. And other races are not excluded from HBCUs either–there were plenty at Florida A&M.

I hated the entire Greek system in college and I went to a small Tech school and then an HBCU. Bunch of rich, entitled, hazing, sexist, racist, property destroying, drunken douches who went out of their way to remind you that Daddy could get them out of any trouble they got into. Defenders will be quick to point out all the charity work they do but is it “charity” when you’re forced to do it? And who brags about doing charity? You do it because you care, not as instagram fodder.

Sorry for the rant, I just can’t stand or abide by this sh*t.

    • Esmom says:

No apologies necessary, I can’t stand or abide by it either. Makes my skin crawl and as my teen sons get closer to college age I want to find a way to make sure they are never part of a fraternity like SAE.

    • TheOnlyDee says:

“These are the same bro-sephs that would be high-fiving the blacks on the football team but quick to toss around the n word when they drop a pass. ”

I knew quite a few guys like that, unfortunately. Going around dropping the n word, but cheering on football players who were black and wearing their jerseys while listening to music by black artists. I saw some comments above asking why people still say that word and still act like that. You would be surprised how common it is. People are just stupidly putting it on social media or filming it, outing themselves. Homophobic slurs and racial slurs are thrown around at my brother in law’s house by him and his friends every time they have a get together. I stopped going because I couldn’t be around that.

Historically black fraternities and sororities are far from exclusionary, as they were founded because colleges themselves had very little inclusion, let alone Greek organizations. A couple of my friends were members of Omega Psi Phi and are extremely proud of that.

  18. PoliteTeaSipper says:

I am also a graduate of the University of Oklahoma.

President Boren has had a rough year. With animal abuse in the labs, accusations of cronyism at the highest levels, university employees “encouraged” to resign to find jobs elsewhere and refusing to return paintings stolen by the Nazis, I’m sure this was the worst. This is what gets you bad headlines across the world.

There is nothing Boren hates more than bad press. He is a politician. I only wish he dealt with other unethical goings on with anything approaching the same zeal. Now everything else he has been questioned about while running OU will get swept under the rug because of his (correct) actions against SAE.

I can tell you that he absolutely would not have taken such drastic action without the outrage of the world’s press. I know this from personal experience which I will not expand on at this time.

When I was a student one of the frats got suspended and booted off campus because one of their pledges was found dead of alcohol poisoning. The man’s father was a high ranking judge and friend of Boren, if memory serves. The frat was reinstated after several years had passed. Honestly I think they should have been evicted from campus as well–someone at one of their parties died! One major difference was social media is not as much of a thing as it was then, and the student’s death only made headlines in state. This has gone around the world and made a huge black eye for the university.

    • littlestar says:

Interesting. I’m reading your post to mean that you’ve had close dealings with Boren (apologies if this is not the case). I wish I would have read all the comments on here before posting above.

    • Esmom says:

Interesting, and honestly not entirely surprising considering how entrenched these groups are on campuses/in college life. I can’t put my finger on it but something about his statement struck me as a bit disingenuous. It wouldn’t surprise me if a lot more dirt was still yet to be uncovered, not just at OU but within many large universities.

      • littlestar says:

Now I’m wondering if he was so adamant in his statement because he felt like it would be a good way to try and cover up whatever other skeletons might be hiding in his closet? Like make himself look like a good guy when all along he’s been shady and sneaky too? I’m just speculating, but it makes sense given what PoliteTeaSipper said :(.

      • Esmom says:

littlestar, yes. His last comment about how they don’t provide assistance to bigots seemed a little over the top to me. Not the message itself, but the tone, which seemed sort of frantic. Like you said, who knows what else they have to hide?

  19. Crocuta says:

Can somebody explain to this non-American what’s with Greek letters in the names of fraternities and sororities? Does every letter stand for something specific so Sigma Alpha Epsilon members from different universities all over the country have the same goals that are 2/3 the same with Sigma Gamma Epsilon people and completely not in agreement with Omega Psi Theta guys? (I’m obviously just throwing random Greek letters together to illustrate the question, I really don’t know what combinations can exist.) Can different universities even have same combinations?

    • Crocuta says:

Wiki says “Sigma Alpha Epsilon has had nine deaths linked to drinking, drugs and hazing since 2006, more than any other Greek organization, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.”
They seem like nice chaps indeed.

  20. EC says:

This story breaks my heart. I think the Greek system in American colleges is incredibly insular and therefore a breeding ground for misogyny and racism. So often it goes under the radar, but stories like this shed light on activities that happen more often that we care to admit. I am glad the response by the school was swift and harsh. I hope these young men are ashamed, and I am sure it will impact their options should they apply for jobs in the local area – as it should. Schools across the country should already be working on initiatives to combat racism. As we have said before, there is still so much to be done.

More Waka please. The heart of his message is so inspiring that I got a little emotional reading it. Props to him for speaking his piece without sugar coating the abominable behavior of these young men, but still coming off as graceful and full of love. Plus, as stated by many a poster above, he’s damn sure not hard to look at. I would love to see an increase in coverage of rappers that aren’t Kanye ❤️

Waka is Kind of Bae and really good about speaking his mind and not backing down, when he made comments about Palestine people tried to give him shit about it and he was like IDGAF Come at me

      • Shambles says:

Just googled– he gaines massive Bae points with me for using his social media platform to speak out against injustice and suffering, and taking no sh!t. Intelligence + compassion + waka hotness = tingles

As horrible as this is, I am so happy that it was made public. This along with the DOJ report on Ferguson officials and their racial bias has been so satisfying after hearing so many people tell me racism isnt a problem anymore. It exist out right and proud an it exist behind closed doors. These young men were/are likely to become our future senators, police officers, and judges. How are miniorities and women (bc I can only assume racist frat bros are more than likely sexist) supposed to feel safe and trust public officials.

  23. anne_000 says:

    The chant is:

“’You can hang him from a tree, but he’ll never sign with me, there will never be a n***** SAE.’

So the chant includes a reference to lynching as well. O_o
    🙁

According to the DM, a sorority may be in trouble too because some of their members were on that bus cheering and singing that chant.

And it was sung to the tune of “If You’re Happy And You Know It.”

So, so disgusted. They did the right thing shutting that house down, but god help us all-how can you change a person’s mentality? These idiots fill me with dread. W handled it perfectly and with way more class than I could have. My first year at college I was approached by what I thought were some very nice girls who invied me to rush. I went to one event, and that was more than enough. Nope, nope, nope.

    • kri says:

@anne Oh my god, how sick. ugh. Btw,sorry about double post, I’m grossed out and hit it twice.

I went to OU (class of 2000) and dated an SAE member for a little less than a year. He completely broke me down emotionally and it turned out that he lied to me about virtually everything. The absolute breaking point was when I found out he and a few other members had driven to Mexico and bought a large amount of drugs to supply the house, including several hundred tabs of rohypnol!!!! The revelation that my boyfriend was attempting to facilitate untold numbers of rapes almost sent me to the psyche ward. I was so unbelievably disgusted I made sure EVERYONE KNEW about it. This story has a quasi-happy ending tho. The freaking geniuses decided to do some of the drugs en-route back home. They all got so tired that they stopped at a Walmart in the middle of Texas to sleep it off. Someone noticed an SUV full of passed out dudes and called the cops and they got busted. Pretty little frat boys were brought up on FEDERAL drug trafficking charges. Unfortunately my ex’s dad spent tons of cash to keep him out of prison. But they all got kicked out of the frat and the university.

  26. Jaded says:

It was all over the Canadian news last night, my jaw dropped when I saw it and then I had a flashback to my high school days wayyyyy back in the seventies and NOTHING HAS CHANGED! Frats and soros were filled with mainly the most snotty, entitled, drunken, deceitful, self-absorbed and sneering rich kids in town, and I lived in a very wealthy town back then, although from the “wrong side” so I wasn’t considered acceptable. They all got passes for bad behaviour because “daddy” was an influential person. I stayed away from them, not that I would have been asked to join any of the soros, I wasn’t deemed cool enough.

So fast-forward 40+ years and the same thing is still going on. Regardless of what else may be going on at UO, president Boren did the right thing by clamping down immediately. Those cretins should be booted out as well.

  27. Paige says:

this is slightly off topic…but how in the hell does a frat get enough money to have a major act come perform for them. I was in a big time sorority and we had no where near the budget that these guys had….craziness…and oh yeah what a bunch of bigots…

  28. mernymerlyn says:

  30. Jag says:

I think the school and the organization handled it well, as did Waka Flocka.

What’s with these racist jerks acting this way? In January, some Native American students – 57 between the ages of 9 and 13 – were at their first hockey game. Some other people there who were in beer distributor Eagle Sales’ VIP suite threw beer at them and pelted them with racial slurs. It was horrible and not much has been done, other than “investigating.”

  31. Jayna says:

This is so disgusting that I can’t wrap my mind around it. To hear racist lyrics and referring to lynching in the lyrics, just who is raising these boys before they even get to college? There was also one girl on the bus, maybe even more sorority members.

The Black chef is now out of a job and claims that this frat was like “family.” to him. I wish I can say to him “Dude you weren’t “family” to them. You weren’t even a chef, YOU WERE THE COOK. They “loved’ you the way old time thinking racists loved their slaves and servants. We “love” you so long as you stay in your place! I pray that you get a job and work for people who not only respect you as a chef but as a HUMAN BEING.

    • lucy2 says:

I feel so bad for that guy – not only did he lose his job through no fault of his own, but the people he thought of as “family” betrayed him and are disgusting racists. I’m hoping he finds a much better opportunity where the people he interacts with actually respect and care about him.

  33. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

Oh, gee. What a stunning coincidence that the university didn’t know about any of this decades-long and country-spanning behaviour until right after it hit the papers. I’m sure the school administration wasn’t shaken out of its long, long, long history of complacency (and complicity) only because the heat is on. I am certain that the school, and schools in general have no idea that fraternities can be hotbeds of disgusting behaviour because no one has ever mentioned it to them. It makes total sense that I, a Canadian, know that this particular frat’s behaviour is even more virulently racist than that the other ones, but the people sitting beside them had no clue. ‘Hey man, #Notallchapters.’ Hey man, cram it.

‘Oh, cheese and crackers, you mean to say that one of the most notoriously racist fraternities in the whole country fosters racism? Jiminy Jillikers! Wait, you don’t mean to say that this type of incident isn’t unique, that there have been multiple incidents of this kind of behaviour under my tenure, I knew this but did nothing about it until the camera was on? But wouldn’t that mean that the fraternity has known about goings-on like this for centuries, yes, even in these current times when it’s slightly unbecoming to showcase your racism so loudly on film? Oh, I’m sorry, we can’t hear you over the sound of us patting ourselves on the back. Would you like an autographed glossy?’ I’m sure that this whole performance is all beautifully genuine and the status quo will not settle back in while people turn blind eyes again. Sure as sure can be.

They’re gone, this is very good. It doesn’t do much for the non-headlining students who were victims of unpunished abuse, but at least these idiots are gone …for a while. They’ll be fine. People are concerned about the next generation–it’s every generation. So we live in horribly racist world still, today? Stop all the clocks. I’m not saying we should give up, just that experience has given me a jaundiced and it must stay that way.

    Don’t look so shocked.

  34. Mispronounced Name Dropper says:

Good to see these entitled middle-class turds get their comeuppance, but talk about equality leaves me cold. As long as we have a society divided by class kids born into privilege will always have more opportunity’s and less obstacles than kids who aren’t.

  35. BEC says:

I chose my college specifically because it had no greek life. Racism is systematic, not just specific. If people don’t understand that our entire american society is racist, we can never move forward.
