Vin Diesel named his baby daughter Pauline in honor of the late Paul Walker

Vin Diesel had a pre-taped interview which aired on The Today Show this morning. He’s promoting Furious 7, which is out April 3 and would surely be a huge hit with zero promotion. In his talk with Natalie Morales, which took place over headsets in a helicopter, Diesel got choked up when he revealed that his new baby, born about two weeks ago, is a girl whom he named Pauline. Pauline is of course in honor of the late Paul Walker, who passed in a tragic car accident in November, 2013. Furious 7 will be Walker’s final film. Here’s what Diesel told Morales, and you can see the video below:

As the actor revealed on NBC’s Today Monday, “I named her Pauline.”

“There’s no other person that I’m thinking about as I’m cutting this umbilical cord,” he added. “I knew he was there and I felt like, you know, a way to keep his memory a part of my memory, a part of my world.”

Diesel also revealed why he broke the news with anchor Natalie Morales. “I’m telling you this because I love you,” he told the journalist. “I know that you are a good soul, and I know that this is in good hands.”

Pauline, whose birth was announced via Facebook March 16, is Diesel’s third child with Paloma Jiménez. The actor and his longtime girlfriend are also the proud parents of daughter Hania Riley Sinclair, 6, and son Vincent Sinclair, 4.

That just gets me verklempt. I got the impression that Diesel told Morales this in the helicopter because he didn’t want the audience to see him cry. It must be so hard for him to talk about losing his best friend.

Vanity Fair has a video of Vin introducing a screening of Furious 7 at SXSW. He explained that he had just come from the hospital and said it was “a good thing,” but didn’t say why. (His daughter had just been born.) He also said “this was a very personal and important film to us… every time when I saw the movie at the premiere, Paul Walker would go off to the side and say ‘Vin, the best one’s still in the can…’ I hope… this is the best one for you guys.” He also warned the audience against revealing spoilers.

Then Vin explained why the film was so personal to him, and after he said this he had to stop talking for a minute because he got choked up. He said “This was a labor of love. It was in some ways the hardest movie I ever had to do because the relationships that you see on film are so real. When the tragedy happened, I lost my best friend. I lost my brother.

In response, the audience started yelling that they loved him and one guy said “you got family here, Vin.” He recovered and said “Thanks for being my family, thanks for always taking care of us… thanks for taking the themes that we put in this action saga and somehow applying it to your own lives. You know what’s most important in life.” The audience said “family”. I didn’t need a good cry on a Monday morning, but I just got one.

OMG!!! Pauline is such a pretty name. This is awesome…what a great way to start the week. I am going to be smiling all day.

What a lovely way to honor the memory of the person he calls his brother!! Go Vin!!

P.S. Is anyone else dreading the thought of watching the movie, knowing PW is gone 🙁

    • als says:

I was so anxious to see Furious 7 before what happened with Paul Walker and now I am indeed dreading it. But I will see it. One last ride.

    • Tiffany says:

Now just the movies but Shark Week will not be the same either. I remember watching last year and they had to edit it because he did not return. Dude is just missed.

    • V4Real says:

I’m excited and sad at the same time. Seeing this film will be like saying goodbye to Paul all over again. The previews are giving me chills. I’m just wandering what they did to his character.

  6. EC says:

So touching. So happy to see a (physically) big, strong man be so open about his pain and the loss he is feeling. Everyone deals with death differently, but I like that he seems unafraid to let us know he is hurting. Congrats on your baby girl, Vin.

  7. MAP says:

Super shallow comment coming: Paul Walker was smoking hot. Seriously.

    • Yeses says:

+100 Not shallow if it’s true, just because someone died before their time, it does not mean that they were not hot…PW was such a beautiful man, inside and out…those baby blues!!!

    • V4Real says:

Not shallow at all. I still have a shirtless pic of Paul on my office wall that’s been there for about four years.

Very sweet of Vin to honor his friend by naming his baby girl after him

    • wow says:

Not shallow if it’s the truth.

However, considering how he died, I would have left the word “smoking” out.

  8. lunchcoma says:

Pauline is a pretty name, much better than the usual Hollywood fare, and it’s often nice for a child to have a name with some meaning behind it.

  9. BooBooLaRue says:

Awwww gonna tear up here, what a lovely gesture. I love the name Pauline!

  10. A.Key says:

    Aw man :'(

    That’s beautiful

  13. MonicaQ says:

Goddamnit I wasn’t expecting the cry clicking on a Vin Diesel article and now I’m just done.

  14. Lara K says:

It’s so great to see that not all cool actors are douchebags. So often that goes hand in hand.
But Vin is a true class act, and PW was too. They were Hollywood, and action, and sexy. And still manage to have class. Now that’s something special.

  15. Brenda says:

This makes me happy for two reasons. One because it’s a lovely way to honor his friend. Second because Pauline was my grandmother’s name! She was so sweet and beautiful.

  16. Emma - the JP Lover says:

I still can’t believe Paul Walker is gone.

  17. Christin says:

“You know what’s most important in life.” I completely get what he’s saying and how perspective can change after a loss of someone close to you.

    Such a sweet tribute.

  18. Beep says:

Vin seems like a good guy. That was sweet of him.

  19. nene says:

This is really moving. Such a truly bittersweet moment for Vin.
Paul Walker was a good soul who was taken too early from us by the cruel hands of death.

  20. SamiHami says:

Not a fan of his or of those movies, but wow, what a lovely tribute to his friend.

  21. lucy2 says:

One of the movies was just on TV yesterday, it was so sad to see Paul Walker. I’ve only ever seen the first one and they seem like action craziness, but those guys have always talked about the cast and crew being a family. This is a really nice tribute for a good friend.

  22. Pumpkin Pie says:

It’s a great name. I love VD even more now. I was not going to watch FF7 but now that I read what VD said about the film, I am definitely going to watch it.

  23. Anne says:

    GROOT!

  24. rachel says:

Please.. every time there is an opportunity to talk about Paul Walker, Van Diesel is using it as free publicity. Enough Van Diesel get some class.

  25. serena says:

    I just got chocked up..

  26. wow says:

I still miss Paul. Watching this one will be hard. 🙁

That was sweet of Vin and Paola.
