PETA slams ‘oblivious’ Pippa Middleton for trying whale carpaccio in Norway

FFN_Middleton_Pippa_FFUK_exc_041415_51712060

Here are some photos of Pippa Middleton out and about in London yesterday. I would theorize that she’s coming from or going to work, but Pippa doesn’t work in the traditional sense. She just sort of vacations and eats out and works out, and she writes about her Pippa adventures for various publications. Which brings me to Pippa’s latest scandal. In one of her latest columns/essays for The Telegraph, Pippa wrote about how she tried whale carpaccio during a recent vacation in Norway. “Whale carpaccio” as in “smoked whale meat.” Yeah, so PETA has some problems.

Pippa Middleton may want to wear a disguise if she’s ever in the vicinity of PETA’s London office. In her column for the Daily Telegraph, Kate Middleton’s younger sister recalled trying smoked whale carpaccio (i.e. smoked-but-uncooked whale meat) during a recent trip to Norway.
Pippa noted benignly that the whale tasted “similar to smoked salmon but looks more like venison carpaccio.”

Well, as you might be able to guess, animal rights groups—and PETA in particular—are finding her culinary adventure particularly distasteful.

“Pippa is not known for common sense or compassion, but it still beggars belief that anyone, let alone someone from a country like ours, where whale meat has long been banned, could be oblivious to the uproar over Norway’s slaughter of these gentle giants,” Elisa Allen, associate director of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals U.K., said Thursday in an exclusive statement to E! News. “Does she think or read? What’s next, a panda steak or an elephant canapé? These whales are harpooned and bled to death before they’re gutted. If Pippa is looking for a culinary experience, some of the best high-end vegan food—recently named by Forbes magazine as a top food trend—can be found in Norway, and it’s good for the heart, an organ Pippa seems to lack.”

[From E! News]

Maybe this makes me a bad, uninspired person, but I’ve never had the desire to try any of the food that’s “banned” in America or any country. I don’t have a super-adventurous palate in the first place, but you would have to pay me to try whale carpaccio. And yes, whale meat is banned in the UK and America and many other countries. I guess not in Norway. Should we just chalk this up to “when in Rome”? Or should Pippa watch what she eats and writes about?

Trying whale is CRUEL. If she doesn’t understand that she is a lost cause.

    • FLORC says:

No. The act of how the meat is acquired is cruel. Eating cooked meat is not cruel.
That she ate it and that supports the act of whale hunting is cruel.

      • helen says:

I think that shows like Man v. Food are far more damaging (in terms of promoting bad health habits and irresponsible meat consumption) than talking about one experience eating whale that most of the readers will have no opportunity to replicate in their own lives…

      • FLORC says:

        Helen
They’re both bad and comparing the 2 are apples and oranges.
There’s a reason whale meat is banned in nearly the entire world. That she ate it and (indirectly) promoted it is her linking herself to eating whale meat. It’s a slippery slope.

      • Question everything says:

Yep, eating nearly extinct animals is plain disgusting especially while there are so many other tasty options for wealthy people like Pipsqueak.

There is one very consoling thought:

Whale meat is often highly contaminated very much with quicksilver and lead and other stuff. 😉

    • Jag says:

She is a disgusting, lost cause. Anyone with a brain should know how horrible it is to kill a whale, and anyone with any kind of compassion would make sure that they don’t ever help add to a whale’s suffering.

Whales should be protected around the entire world – not killed by countries who are too ignorant to realize that if the whales die, the oceans die – and then we die.

  2. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

    “Does she think or read?”
    Um, no.

  3. meme says:

    she’s an idiot.

  4. Jenns says:

I can’t believe that this Pippa thing is still happening…

    • Loopy says:

I can’t believe how tanned she gets, she looks like she is from Brazil. She is going to look terrible by 40.

      • wow says:

I can’t believe how good her parents set them all up . First daughter marries well and will become a Queen, second.daughter and only b son gets to play at having jobs that even if they fail at (James’ numerous business ventures) or get fired from (Pippa tips), their lifestyle still doesn’t change. I wish Carole would write a book. A REAL book on what they did to make this all pan out. It would be so juicy!

      • pamspam says:

I honestly thought this was a picture of Bruce Jenner from the thumbnail. Oopsie.

      • FLORC says:

        wow
Kate isn’t a Queen though. And at this rate many things could happen that cancel that future and title out. To say she “will” reads like it’s set in stone. It’s only a possibility at this point.

And the only 2 I want to read books from are Uncle Gary and Tanna. They have the information.

Regarding the other Midd siblings… James wants to make it. He just comes off like he’s entitled to success. There’s work involved and his management choices are horrible.
And Pippa had the right path, but lost it for socialite life. What hustle and brains she had are not as apparent as they were once. And as soon as the lawyers with heavy royal connections got towed into the Pippa can’t take a joke Tips she was gone. Taking the easy and entitled route.
Her writing freelance, to me, still sounds like celebs who make appearances at clubs.. She’s paid for her name and presences while putting in minimal work while getting compensated for travel and leisure.
I think many had high hopes.

    • seesittellsit says:

@meme: our hearts beat as one on that score. Her sister’s marriage has turned her into total Euro-trash.

  5. lila fowler says:

The Middletons–all of them, including the Duchess–need to GTFO. Social-climbing morons.

  6. amanda says:

“Recently, the Norwegian whaling industry has met increasing difficulties because of falling demand and weak recruitment. Norwegian anti-whaling groups seem to prefer to hold a low profile and watch over the slow death of the industry, instead of raising their voice and polarizing the debate.”

    http://www.aftenposten.no/nyheter/uriks/wikileaks/Spar-stille-dod-for-norsk-hvalfangst-5106834.html

“Lack of attention given Norwegian whaling could actually be a good thing, allowing for a natural, market regulated decline in industry, he writes.”

this seems like a case of ‘when in rome’ and being open to trying new things without knowing much about the industry in the country.

Is she terrible for doing this? No.
plenty of people try new things once despite not quite knowing the rules and controversies of the animal in question (or the culture).

But maybe this will be ‘bad’ for the whaling in Norway, as the whaling seemed to decline due to loss of demand and willing fisherman recruits, but it might boost tourism and a desire to try whale meat when Pippa writes about it…I hope not, but maybe?

    • Question everything says:

So basically despite Pippas expensive private education you assume she doesn’t know whales are close to extinction??

Even I know that although I am neither an animal lover nor an ardent environmentalist.

I hope the news of Pippa eating whale in Norway get out and more people realize how bad eating whale really is.

      • Myskijn says:

Whales are close to extinction? Well, not the whales that Norway hunts. In 2014 Norway killed 729 out of an estimated stock of 800.000

      • Maria A. says:

So, if one goes by that ‘when in Rome’ adage, that means if Pippa gets served dog or cat somewhere, like Asia, she should just tuck in?
Meat is murder no matter which animal is murdered. And Pippa is tone deaf.

      • FLORC says:

Meat is not murder. That’s a fairly closeminded and ignorant statement.
“Murder” comes with a stigma. Do people murder their pets when they have to put them down rather than suffer? Do animals nat also die naturally and their meat is used?

      • Jag says:

FLORC, how else would you term killing an animal that doesn’t want to be killed? That would be murder.

And yes, people do murder their pets when they have them put down. I have had to do that numerous times, and the murder was justified because my pets were suffering.

Animals that die naturally typically don’t have their meat used for human consumption, unless it can be determined what the animal died of and how long ago, and both of those things don’t deter the consumption of the meat.

      • Anne tommy says:

Maria A, Saying meat is murder is insulting to those who have had loved ones murdered ( just like those who say losing their pet is like losing their child. Those who have lost children will be able to tell the difference I assure you). Don’t compare humanely putting down an old pet who is in pain – or killing animals for food- to the murder of a human being. Eating a burger is not the same as cannibalism. Vegetarianism is an ethical choice to be applauded and pippa is an all round idiot but hyperbole just undermines debate.

  7. Loopy says:

Nobody proof reads her work to make sure she is not putting her foot in her mouth?

    • MinnFinn says:

I bet her Telegraph editor knew it would create controversy aka click bait and went ahead and threw Pippa under the bus.

I have mixed feelings about PETA but kudos to them for this exquisitely snarky takedown.

Her ignorance about whale hunting and the fake gun incident in France has a desperate-for-media-attention undertone that makes me cringe and a little sad for Pippa. She needs guidance and introspection so she can carve out a more meaningful life for herself.

      • LAK says:

That was my thought too. Definitely click bait.

However, I wonder that her common sense didn’t kick in. It’s no secret that whales have acquired cuddly status even if you don’t know that whaling is banned worldwide. Why write about eating whale when there is a smorgasbord of things to experience and write about in Norway?

  8. mimif says:

Whales are still harvested in America, just saying.

    • Megan says:

The only whaling in the US is Aboriginal Susistence Whaling in Alaska and whalers must adhere to the IWC’s quota of 336 bowhead whales for the period of 2013-2018.

      • mimif says:

I’ll be sure to mention that next time I see a white boy carving up a Beluga for it’s muktuk.

    • Kiddo says:

Whales are such incredibly intelligent, curious, and loving beings, I couldn’t imagine partaking in it, even with the ‘when in Rome’ idea. Especially if other food is plentiful.

      • mimif says:

I agree. I can’t get behind that particular form of subsistence at all. I was offered dried whale meat dipped in seal oil in a situation where it would be very rude to refuse, and I chose the latter option because WHALES (and seals).

      • Sooloo says:

But if they weren’t “intelligent, curious, and loving beings” then it’d be fair game to eat them? What about all the other animals that also aren’t “intelligent, curious, and loving beings”?

      • Kiddo says:

I’ve pretty much given them up. I’m down to fish, (not mammals) but one say that will bother me too.

    • Sixer says:

It’s only Norway, Iceland and Japan who don’t adhere to the IWC quotas.

Either way, I’d support a total ban with very small exceptions for first people communities.

I’d consider myself an adventurous eater – but in the Venn diagram of adventurous vs sustainable, I wouldn’t be eating anything from the unsustainable circle. I’ll stick to the “adventurous” bits of animal other people throw away – offal, pigs trotters and the like.

  9. a cut above says:

Say no to whale meat! But PETA disappoints me so bitterly, this is whole thing ends up being a wash for me.

  10. Miss W says:

She shouldn’t have eaten it! And she shouldn’t have written about it. Agh.

  11. MaddieH says:

The question is, is that ‘high end vegan’ food ethically prepared? You know plants have feelings too.

  12. Megan says:

Norway is in violation of the international ban on commerical whaling. Pippa should be ashamed of herself for promoting an illegal and grotesque hunt.

  13. jugstorecowboy says:

I’m not a Pippa apologist, but think PETA’s time would be better spent focusing on more humane treatment of animals for slaughter. We’re not all going to become vegan. To me, whale carpaccio sounds gross, but I took my daughter to Burger King last night (her pick) and don’t know that those chickens were treated any better so I can’t judge.

    • Anony says:

The whales die a much slower death than the chickens and whales reproduce much, much slower than chickens. Their populations can easily crash.

    • Megan says:

Burger King has done a lot to reduce cruelty in its supply chain. The chicken almost certainly fared better than a whale that was shot with an exploding harpoon.

      http://www.vegan.com/blog/burger-king-to-eliminate-battery-cages-gestation-crates/

      • FLORC says:

And the CocaCola company is in the Fairlife milk. I do not like that company, but I cant argue against their sustainable farming plan and health of the cows.
        Small steps, but great impact.

    • Sixer says:

I’m all for anti-factory farming and humane slaughter campaigns, but entire whale populations are being put at risk with lord knows what consequences for the ecosystem. That’s the imperative, you know? The very existence of chickens and cows and pigs is not under threat.

      • tealily says:

Yeah, but PETA goes after the eating of chickens, cows, and pigs with equal fervor.

      • jugstorecowboy says:

Fair enough. I’ll hop on the no-whaling train. But I still think PETA could help a lot more animals if they weren’t so insistent on total veganism.

    • Tessy says:

I think Peta has the energy to speak out on any sort of animal abuse. Factory farming is just as abhorrent as killing whales and other wild animals. We don’t buy factory farmed eggs or meat as we can’t abide the thought of how those poor creatures are treated. Free range is more expensive but we just buy and use less.

I know a lot of people don’t like Peta and I’ve questioned some of their tactics too but in spite of that, they’ve done a lot of good on all sorts of animal issues. I donate to Sea Shepherd and Peta as well as local animal charities.

      • FLORC says:

PETA has no room to talk. They put down thousands of adoptable animals every year because they’ve been too domesticated and have lost their true nature. The reason is that they’re already a slave to man and are better dead.
Truly. This is PETA when you get past the public image.

The only good PETA has ever done is for PR purposes only. If they didn’t have to collect donations their image would be very different.

  14. Hannah says:

I don’t think she us cruel just isn’t very informed.
By the way not only Norway, but Iceland, Japan, the faroe Islands (denmark) and yes the USA still practise whaling.

  15. PHD gossip says:

i have a feeling that the Wisteria Sisters are not that close anymore. Betcha Pippa resents that Sis isn’t helping her out enough to land a titled & rich hubby.

  16. Becks says:

Sorry to interject a note of shallowness:
I can more believe that Kate has hair extensions when I see Pippa’s hair. She really has quite thin hair. It’s thin and rather lank. Even when it’s styled and blown out (as it isn’t here) it is still on the thin side.
It’s unlikely that 2 sisters have such a different hair type. I was never good at discerning the “wiglets” that was so obvious to many, but I can believe it the more I see of Pippa.

    • FLORC says:

There are many photos where Kate’s hair isn’t in it’s brushed out curl sort of frizzy natural state. Her hair is as Pippa’s. On the thin side. Her hair ballooned around engagement time and doubled again for honeymoon. My links never make it, but Kate Feathers In Hair has 2 decent shorts of her normal style. Curled ends.
      – Wiglet Watch

    • Imo says:

Kate’s hair was always thicker and wavier than Pippa’s. But yes, Kate wears extensions and crown falls.

    • Lilian says:

My sister and brother have extremely thick, extremely straight hair. My other brother and I have very curly not as thick hair. It’s very possible.

    • Imqrious2 says:

It’s definitely possible. I (the older sister) have very thick, wavy/curly, coarser hair than my younger sister (who has always had thin, baby fine hair). Mine is like my Dad’s; her’s is like my Mom’s.

Boy, did I have hair jealousy growing up, when long, straight hair was “in” lol. No blow driers when I was a kid (yes, I am pre-historic! :-P), and I had to wrap my hair around a 48 0z size tomato juice can for it to dry out straight. That took about 10 hrs to dry completely as my hair was almost down to my butt! If I didn’t wrap it around the can when wet (and again, around my head, with hair clips every night), I’d end up with a frizzy, wavy, curly mess! All my sister had to do was comb hers and sit still for about 10 min. and she was dry AND straight!

When blow driers came out, all my sister had to do was tip her head down and blow dry, and in less than 5 min. Her hair was dry AND straight. I’d be blow drying for 30-45 min. (depending on seasonal humidity), and the flat ironing for another 10-15 min. Sigh…

      • Anne tommy says:

Loved the tomato can story! I have thick coarse hair that used to be very curly- now that getting older has straightened it out, I’d be glad to have my untidy mop back…

    • Anna says:

Actually it is possible. I have a lot of really thick hair but both of my older sisters have thin hair. It doesn’t look like they’re missing any hair (as in they look normal) but they probably have a third of the hair that I do.

    • Sarah says:

Haha nope. My sister and I have totally different hair. Hers is thick and wavy and frizzy and mine is fine and limp and dead straight.

How is it hard to believe sisters have different hair? Same way we can have different skin tones, different eye colours, different facial features, different heights etc.

    • FLORC says:

Yes, it is possible to have different features from your siblings. Kate’s hair has long been the same as Pippa’s hair until it suddenly wasn’t.

  17. Anony says:

Even if whaling wasn’t cruel (which it is) whale meat is FULL of mercury! You’d have to be a total idiot to eat whale meat. It is way over the acceptable limit for human consumption.

  18. Hollz says:

I legitimately clicked on this story because I couldn’t figure out how “Whale Cappuccino” was a thing. Really glad it’s now *puke face*

I think this is a “when in Rome” situation and don’t really care that she ate it – but I don’t think she should have written about it.

    • savu says:

I’m glad I’m not alone. Unpopular opinion, but if I was in Norway and didn’t understand why it’s controversial, I would’ve tried it. I’m VERY adventurous with food. However, I would’ve probably regretted it once I found out all the details. And DEFINITELY not written about it.

      • Hazel says:

Yeah, she probably figured (if she thought about it at all) that if it was on the menu, it was ok/legal. She’s paid to travel, do something sporty, eat, & write about it. Not a bad gig. Interesting discussions & points of view about this, today.😊

  19. FLORC says:

Yes this is terribel. Yes Pippa is fairly oblivious to how things are wrong (gun pointing/unfair gamehunting), but she needs to learn. She is in the public eye. She makes a living because of how she’s in the public eye. She needs to be more aware of these actions.

This is all a sacrifice family members of those married into the BRF have to make. Pippa has yet to catch on. You may not like it, but it is the case.

That she ate whale meat though… Ugh. Because you couldn’t get it elsewhere? one would likely think there’s a reason for that.
This sounds like Foie Gras all over again.

    • MinnFinn says:

Pippa suffers from dilettante one-upmanship syndrome. She ate the whale meat to “impress” her readers and friends with her exotic culinary knowledge and palette.

      • FLORC says:

        *snickers*
And sadly I think you’re right. It’s about the group you’re in. They hunt so she hunts. They eat these things so she does.

If they were vegan I bet she would be also.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I think it’s terrible, too, but I don’t think she is a very deep thinker or very aware of issues. Not that it’s an excuse, but I doubt she knew it would cause a controversy. I think she’s not very bright.

      • FLORC says:

        GNAT
But Pippa has shown she was smart. Learning in school did come easier to her. Out of all 3 kids she seemed the brightest.
The Midds lifestyle though… It dulls the senses. How can someone maintain or improve when things are handed to them for barely doing the minimum.
Like when Pippa started writing articles and later the Party Planning Book disaster. She didn’t take the criticism and improve. She got by on her name and not skill.

I think you’re right though. Eating and talking about it wouldn’t (in her mind) be seen as a bad thing because it was not a bad thing in her circle.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Oh, I didn’t know she was smart. I guess I was basing it on her book, which seemed less than smart. Lol but maybe I was unfair.

Agree with you that her circle is probably not discussing the plight of the whales.

      • FLORC says:

        GNAT
If this issue is discussed it would only be at a gala or to make themselves feel informed on world issues. Imo anyways.

And the book was great! How else would we have a recipe for ice cubes. Or know that drawers are great for storage. Or that people like drinking water and it’s best served in a glass. I’m not even making any of that up.

    • Hazel says:

Which her sister ate–foie gras.😝 (this was a reply to FLORC)

      • FLORC says:

Right. Kate did eat it. To get it though she had to have it brought in specially because the BRF and political structure took a hard stance against the brutal treatment of live animals to make that liver. It’s argued to be worse than how veal in how the animal is treated and the waste produced by only using select pieces of the animal.

I get having a craving. I’ve had it and loved it. I won’t eat it again though once I found out what it was. It’s not a food i’ll go through back channels to have delivered to me knowing well why it’s not more available.

When it comes to caring this family never seems to extend that past themselves.
Pippa whale and Kate foie gras are just 2 food related examples.

      • Hazel says:

FLORC: I agree re: foie gras. The thing itself sounds revolting, and the way it gets made sounds revolting. People astound me sometimes.

  20. HoustonGrl says:

This is definitely not a case of “when in Rome.” Even Norwegians are split on this. But it’s not really surprising. This is the same woman who stood in front of 50 + bird carcasses. Having personally seen these magnificent creatures in the wild, this is truly despicably horrific. Her (and her sister’s) lack of compassion and sensitivity to the ills of our society, particularly given the position they’re in, is just disturbing. It’s like they were born in another century.

  21. anne_000 says:

Are any of the MIddleton children sophisticated enough to know about the world around them? James thinking photos on marshmallows is what consumers want. Pippa thinking the public can make use of her simple and obvious party-planning tips. Kate thinking nobody will notice her bare butt whenever her dress flies up.

Anyhoo. Did Pippa know about the taboo of eating whale meat when she told everybody about it in a widely read newspaper? Wouldn’t that be a stupid thing to admit if she wasn’t courting controversy?

Ironic how her BIL is an advocate of animal conservation. But did she think it didn’t count because she didn’t hunt the whale herself? Because once it’s dead and on the menu, it’s too late to do anything about it, right? 😛

  22. Caroline says:

Calm the heck down, people. It’s just food. It’s up to the regulators to restrict the number of catches allowed per annum or whatnot, don’t castrate the girl for simply wanting to try something new.

  23. Neonscream says:

Not all whales are endangered, it’s not more wrong than eating beef. PETA of course don’t want people eating any animals but they’ve got some serious animal abuse questions to answer themselves – see PETA “shelters” and their kill rates.

    • FLORC says:

I agree. They’ve one of the highest offenders of animal abuse and mass killings through the least humane and cruel alternatives.
      Sick.

  24. Notthemafia says:

I visited Iceland recently, where whale meat is still served as a delicacy. I spoke with some locals about it and they told me that in fact it’s actually only the older generation there that tend to eat it, and that it’s mostly just targeted at tourists. So actually I think that pippa’s essay does more harm than good as it may lead people to believe that it is more widely eaten than it is, and that its okay to eat it when visiting- thus supporting a thankfully dying industry.

  25. Mzizkrizten says:

I don’t know… My kids and I are studying Native Americans and Western tribes had whale as a staple of their diet. They used whale hip bones as furniture. I doubt they were able to kill these whales ‘humanely’. So were the native Americans terrible for living off their available resources?

    • notasugarhere says:

I think your key word there is “had”. You are studying what happened in the past, not what the situation is today as a result of wholesale slaughter of the whale population for a few centuries.

      • FLORC says:

It’s tricky. Some tribes still remain fairly isolated and only have certain paths to survive. What is happening here is just not the case.
The industry isn’t humane. It has no reasonable argument to justify it. And the meat is Highly contaminated!

        Mziz
Even the people there are not all seeing this way of work is ok. It’s outdated and dangerous. You can’t really take what the Natives did as a form of justification.

    • Jag says:

Is other food available now? Do you have to kill a whale to feed yourself and your family? My guess is yes, other food is available, and no, you don’t have to kill a whale to have food to eat. That should be the end of the discussion right there.

  26. Reg says:

PETA is run by a bunch of lunatics, recent controversy of snatching someone’ s dog
Off the porch, putting it to sleep and then sending an owner a gift basket. Can’t stand
These idiots masquerading as animal rights advocates.

All the money they make goes somewhere, but not to save animals, they put all surrendered animals to sleep.

Pippa Middleton should have known that whale meat is highly contaminated with chemicals

  27. Jaded says:

That was an incredibly short-sighted and stupid move on her part. Period. I’m not imposing my own semi-vegetarian eating habits on the world with my comments here, but Pippa must know that whaling is a very sensitive issue and should be halted. There is no kind way to kill a whale, it is run down and slowly killed by grenade harpoons. Whales are intelligent and gentle creatures and their numbers are dwindling rapidly. Yes native cultures used whale meat for centuries as a dietary staple without impacting its numbers, but it’s the 21st century now and whales are being routinely massacred by Japan, China, Iceland and Norway in huge numbers, not just for the sustenance of a minority group of indigenous people but for oil, cosmetics, pet food and health supplements.

It’s disgusting and the more I read about all the Middletons the more I dislike them.

  28. India Andrews says:

I often am in disagreement with PETA as an omnivore and being from a family of hunters. However, in this case, I have to agree with PETA completely. There isn’t a clean, quick way to kill a whale. Usually it takes more than ten minutes and involves harpooning the thing, reeling it in and filling it with bullets to finish it off while the whale flails at the side of the ship trying to swim away. Choose to eat something more humanely killed next time Pipster.
