Anne Hathaway is supporting Hillary Clinton because of the Supreme Court

FFN_Hathaway_Anne_MET_042615_51723381

Here are some photos of Anne Hathaway in New York from the past five days or so. She and her husband Adam “Skinny Jeans” Shulman have been in New York for a few weeks as Anne was rehearsing and then starting her one-woman show Grounded, showing at The Public Theater through May. You can read the review of the show here – Annie’s playing a drone pilot dealing with PTSD and her performance is getting solid-to-great reviews.

So that answered my questions as to why we’ve been getting so many photos of Adam and Annie lately. They’ve been all over the place, getting pap’d nearly every day in NYC. This hasn’t really happened since Annie went overboard with her Oscar campaign and got WAY too in our faces with photo-ops, interviews, etc. I think she learned a lot from that moment, and she’s veered too far to the other side, where she’s barely speaking to the press at this point. Has she even done any press on behalf of this show?

Here’s something I didn’t know before today – Annie’s on Instagram. She uses it sparingly and mostly for work, charity and maybe to push her jewelry-designing-husband’s wares. But she did post this endorsement of Hillary Clinton a few weeks ago. Annie’s a big Democratic Party supporter, and she’s given and raised money for Pres. Obama’s campaigns in the past. I guess she’s backing Hillary this time around.

Welp, can’t disagree there. Between her or Walker/Rubio/Cruz or even the “Least Bush” getting to pretty much redesign our Supreme Court I will take Hillary.

    • Maria A. says:

Me either and she isn’t the first one who has made this point about the Supreme Court. It’s a serious issue. Just look at Citizens United and what it has done to our elections.

    • LadidahBaby says:

Yes. I don’t like Hillary, as I’ve said here before, though I admire certain things about her, and she wouldn’t be my first Dem choice…but with the Paul/Rubio/Cruz dudes in contention for the GOP nom, I will vote for Hillary if she’s the Dem nominee because the idea of 4 Supremes being tapped by the next president is a thought beyond daunting – to me it’s terrifying. We women are already being challenged in ways we hadn’t been in some time, by far-right men who believe they have a right to control our decisions about our own bodies. And not just on a national level: In the small Red-State town I’m currently living in, the county commissioners recently claimed that they have “a right and a duty” to know when a woman in this county goes on birth control or (especially) buys a morning-after pill. Really? REALLY? Honestly, having lived all my life in the largest city in SoCal until I came here, I’m finding small-town life in a Red State pretty scary. So yeah, in light of how the tide seems to be turning against women’s rights among conservatives, I can’t imagine NOT voting for whoever ends up as the Dem candidate – even if it’s someone like Hillary, whom I see as seriously flawed and not altogether honest – just to prevent the Supreme Court from succumbing to this Red Tide of Neo-Conservatism. But if there was a moderate Republican (no, not Mitt) with a streak of humanity in him or her, I would very readily consider crossing the line.

  2. Kara says:

this would go nicely with “Askhermore”, why not ask celebs about policies of the candidate they publicly endorse? what does Anne Hathaway think of Hillary being hawkish?
what does George I play Basketball with him Clooney think about the way Barack We Tortured some Folks Obama handled the torture scandal? How does he feel about Obamas War on Journalism, espcially because Georges father was one.
how do they feel about what happens to people who bring light to government crimes? there isnt very much celeb support for Chelsea Manning.

    • imjustme says:

I’m not exactly sure why you would expect to see support for Pvt Manning, as Pvt Manning was found guilty of espionage and is currently in Leavenworth. The military kind of frowns on that.

      • Kara says:

“The military kind of frowns on that. ”

so it does not frown upon shooting civillians? because Manning is in jail, the soldiers who killed them are not.

    • The Other Pinky says:

Manning was incredibly irresponsible whistle blower and actually put lives at risk, I dont know why you would expect her to have any support. Contrast with Snowden who worked hard not to do a senseless document dump and specifically focused (and continues to since we are still getting new info from him) on the questionable policies and practices. And Snowden has had Hollywood support, they gave Citizen Four an Oscar for goodness sakes.

      • Megan says:

This! Snowden deserves the credit and support he has gotten… Manning not at all

      • Question now says:

Manning deserves a lot of credit.
Just because he wasn’t too smart when he published it that doesn’t mean he shouldn’t get the credit. Just imagine he hadn’t done it …

  3. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

*tapes fingers together to stop typing long, boring anti-Hillary rant but makes no promises for later*

    • Kiddo says:

      #quoteelizabethwarrenEh

      • raptor says:

Elizabeth Warren is the only way to make me care about this election, tbh.

It would be great to have a progressive candidate who ISN’T in Wall Street’s pocket.

      • Kath says:

God I wish Elizabeth Warren was running. She is all kinds of awesome, but she has said she’s definitely not going to be in the race.

Have any other Democrats announced? Surely they can’t JUST be going with Hillary? What if something happens (scandal etc)? That would just be handing the election to the Repubs.

N.B. I’m not American, so don’t know what the latest news is on this front.

      • Kiddo says:

@raptor, Did you read Salon yesterday? Clinton went to speak with Warren about some oversight legislation, made promises about supporting it, and then voted to veto it. I can’t find the link, now, it seems to have disappeared. But Hillary is trying to play populist candidate now. Someone on the Guardian mentioned that she and Bill were also behind the corporate charter takeover of schools for a quick investment profit, (this was mostly being spearheaded by the Koch bros under a different organizational name). We shall see.

@Kath, 8 years ago, Clinton was expected to run and win, but Obama pulled to the front. It’s still up in the air.

      • Kath says:

Thanks Kiddo. I remember all the Clinton vs Obama shenanigans leading up to 2008, and neither Hillary nor Bill Clinton came off looking good. I was hoping some other Dem might have announced by now, but it looks like they’re just going to hand the nomination to her, which seems wrong.

I love US elections for some reason! The stakes are so high and they go on for so loooong, yet I’m addicted. We just have the parliamentary system in Australia.

      • Kiddo says:

@Kath, I hate it, so much dirt slinging, so little choice, so much lying liars bullchit.

      • aang says:

Warren has said she is not running. Martin O’Malley, governor of Maryland, is a democrat and populist who is going to run. Check out his stance on the issues. But until we have real campaign finance reform and get rid of the electoral college in favor of a straight vote, I’m afraid we will always be choosing the lesser of two evils, both of whom are beholden to big money. #atleastHillaryisnotabiblethumper

      • jane16 says:

O’Malley let the filthy big agra chicken producer, Perdue, run all over him when he was governor, and thus allowed greatly increased pollution in the Chesapeake:

        http://www.foodandwaterwatch.org/blogs/emails-reveal-cozy-relationship-between-gov-martin-omalley-and-perdue/

There are many articles about this.

    • Ncboudicca says:

I wish someone would run who could at least convince me that they weren’t (a) completely insane or (b) shady as sh&t.

  4. LaurieH says:

Anne is supporting Hillary because she’s the only Democrat officially running. If a Republican were guilty of the same things Hillary & Co. are, she’d be apoplectic. That said, Hollywood has been noticeably tepid, if not silent, on their support of Hillary. I think they are crossing their fingers that someone else will run (Elizabeth Warren?) and I think also that Hollywood, like the rest of America, has a bad case of Clinton Fatigue. They’ve been dipping their money buckets in Hollywood for over 2 decades.

    • Lilacflowers says:

It is early. The first primary is still ten months away. Elizabeth Warren is running for re-election to the Senate.

      • Kath says:

Elizabeth Warren said on Bill Maher’s show a few weeks ago that she is definitely not running for president. Bummer, huh?

The Dems seemed to have cleared the field for Hillary, which seems… undemocratic… especially when she is such a polarising figure, has so much baggage (not least Bill!) and she has already has the entitled/dynasty tag to contend with

  5. Kiddo says:

This is only going to confuse the hell out of taterho and the internet links will explode. It’s Tuesday today and not AnnE Hathaway Wednesday.

    • Sixer says:

Yes, but I am (for once) ahead of schedule and am doing work penciled in for Wednesday today, which is Tuesday. I believe, for my own sake, if not AnnE’s, that today is an honorary Wednesday. Taterho will be along to agree, I’m sure.

    • taterho says:

AnnE Wednesday is a work in progress. We need continued effort from every side. Including powers that be ( it’s Tuesday *sigh*) and AnnE herself. AnnE needs to get on board and do smart, innovative, and non-annoying things. hahahahahahhahaa.
      Sorry. Okay, where was I?
I feel some day we will be ready for AnnE Wednesday. It’s not today.
AnnE is the hero Wednesday deserves, but not the one it needs right now.

  6. Tiffany27 says:

That’s a nice pic of Hillary. That’s all I got for this story.

    • belle de jour says:

It’s a striking difference, isn’t it? Perhaps she stick with a more muted, natural tone palette – but I imagine her ‘advisors’ will push the harsh, ‘tougher’ saturated colors…

  7. Rhiley says:

“Run Warren Run”– I am not thrilled about the prospect of a Hillary Clinton presidency, but the Republicans are showing they are just as wacky and close minded as ever. Annie is right. Dems need to vote because of what is in on the line. Can you imagine how hateful and scary America will be for the poor and all minorities if we let someone like Scott Walker or Marco Rubio nominate our Supreme Court Justices?

  8. Renee says:

Anne Hathaway is a terrible dresser. I like (not really) her prison blues outfit with the bell bottoms in the last picture of her.

  9. marie says:

I’m so exhausted by hillary. I wish people would stop trying to make that happen. We need a female president, but not that woman. Democrat or republican I just want someone fresh. We need new views and ideas not just a woman for the sake of being a woman.

    • Kitten says:

“Democrat or republican I just want someone fresh.”

If you want “fresh” then you’ll have to lose the Democrat and Republican parties. How about neither? How about an Independent for once?

Not that I’ll see that in my lifetime but a girl can dream, can’t she?

      • Kiddo says:

If Hillary runs, it’s independent, for me. Tired of being a hostage to no choice lesser evil.

      • ava7 says:

@ Kitten: From your lips to God’s ears about a third party! I agree it won’t be anytime soon. But DEAR LORD not that crook Hillary! I’ve said it before, but House of Cards has nothing on the Clintons.

    • Michelle says:

I don’t like Hillary either and the hype surrounding the Clinton name is both upsetting and disappointing because she is a notorious, blatant liar and opportunist. Bill and Hillary are worshipped as if the majority of the country somehow forgot he was ONE OF ONLY TWO presidents EVER in American history to be IMPEACHED. Somehow this seems to have been expunged from both Clinton’s legacy and the memories of much of the American population because apparently being a whoremaster and taking credit for the fruition of your predecessors’ policies is cool and admirable behavior.

That being said – quotes like, “We need a female president” confuse me. I’d love to see a woman in the White House, but I don’t necessarily believe that we NEED one. I don’t vote based on sex, and I hope others don’t either. The fact that people feel this way is partly why Hillary is believed to stand such a good chance of clinching the Democratic nomination, and that should not be a deciding factor as to why we should vote for someone.

  10. JM says:

I’ll take Warren/Sanders or Sanders/Warren ticket over another Clinton or Bush any day. This country needs fundamental change starting with a constitutional convention to pass an amendment overturning Citizen’s United, returning “personhood” to actual human beings and “speech” being defined as words, not dollars. We The People must demand the removal of money from our political process. Only then will things truly start to improve for the 99%.
*climbs down off soap box and goes back to work*

  11. Isa says:

This is going to be a rough election season for me. I’ve already read that women shouldn’t be president because God made us different from men and the US needs a strong military leader. It was a woman that said this and two other women liked her comment.

    Sigh.

    • Kitten says:

Holy sh*t that is depressing 🙁

    • Ange says:

I’m not even American and I’ve read quite a few pieces about how Hillary can’t be a good president cos her menstratshunz will attract bears – or at the very least have her as a slave to hormones once a month. I’m like… even if that stupid premise held any water do you think it’s still an issue for Hillary? The dumb burns.

  12. Brittney B says:

Wow, her husband looks like Ryan Gosling… not in a good or bad way, because I’ve never really understood Gosling’s appeal but he isn’t ugly either.

  13. FingerBinger says:

It looks like Anne’s husband is wearing her jeans in the first picture.

  14. Lola says:

    She has a point.

    • jane16 says:

Yes. An excellent one. Can you imagine having 3 more religious fundies joining the 5 Horsemen of the Apocalypse? {{{{Shuddering}}}} Women being stripped of all rights? Corporations more rich and powerful than they already are? I don’t know if I could live in that type of America. I am also an Independent (the dem party isn’t liberal enough for me, the Green is more my speed), but I will definitely be voting for Hillary. I don’t believe 99.9% of the crap that’s thrown at her anyway. The filthy rich repub machine has been smearing them since they first appeared in the 90s, with the most outlandish accusations, all of which are eventually proved untrue. I just read an interesting article last nite in a conservative blog (newsmax? I think…) that said that the latest hatchet job on Hillary is completely unsubstantiated and innuendo. That was a conservative admitting that.

      • jane16 says:

I just saw the funniest comment about the 5 conservative justices…the guy called them “the Scaliban!”

  15. Nicolette says:

I guess she supports Hillary on all her lying, cheating, money grabbing deals she’s made. Or maybe she’s in support of the millions upon millions earned by the Clinton’s for their for “foundation” by making shady deals with foreign governments. She is just another greedy elitist who will let nothing or no one stand in her way. She’s the last thing this country needs.

  16. tabasco says:

Annoying as Anne can be, and regardless of one’s politics, either way, that the next Prez will probably be appointing a new solid third of the SCOTUS bench is not a bad basis on which to cast your vote.

Also, props to Anne for stating this clearly as *her* preference. Saying *she* likes the idea of Hillary making those calls, not being all AND SO SHOULD YOU.

  17. Mispronounced Name Dropper says:

Where’s the candidate who’s going to: decriminalize drug use, tackle climate change, allow gay marriage, redistribute the wealth and close the race, gender and class gaps? That’s all I’m interested in.

  18. yas says:

They haven’t really had to do much press. Annie did theater press like TheaterMania and a big New York Times feature with the director. It’s a limited run, the theater is only 270 seats, and people in NYC really turn out for Julie Taymor’s work. Can’t imagine that her personal publicist would want to do press overload if it wasn’t necessary.

  19. CK says:

She does have a point. I really don’t want a republican appointing 1-3 supreme court justices that would shape our country in ways that legislation never could. Especially with conservative state governments setting up test cases like crazy. Would I prefer Warren? Of course. Would I get on the Hillary train to avoid reinforcing a conservative court that has already made strides against contraceptive access, voting rights, finance reform, insurance coverage, and potentially, choice, lgbt rights, unions, and regulations? In a heart beat. 8 years of Hillary to avoid 10-30 years of conservative jurisprudence, sign me the hill up.

  20. MizFabulous says:

I spotted Anne Hathaway and her husband walking in Greenwich Village a few weeks ago.
