Amal Clooney in red Maison Margiela, with George, at the Met Gala: stunning?

wenn22449495

At this time yesterday, no one knew for sure if George and Amal Clooney were going to attend the Met Gala. They weren’t on any of the leaked guest lists. Then, suddenly, Anna Wintour confirmed that George Clooney was seated beside her, at her table. And then we knew. George Clooney was attending his first Met Gala with Amal (he apparently attended a few years back, but not with Amal).

So how did it play out? I think they were a hit. George wore Armani, which is pretty much a given at this point. Clooney is synonymous with Armani, and I like that he went with a white tie and tails. Amal wore this red, tiered, ruffled Maison Margiela Couture gown. Maison Margiela is designed by John Galliano, who is now officially back in the high-fashion fold. It always surprises me how many people were like “forgiven and forgotten” with Galliano’s anti-Semitic rants and hate speech charges. It seems oddly political for Amal Clooney to associate herself with Galliano too, right?

Anyway, I’m glad they came out for the Met Gala. George looks tired but I think he’s pleased to walk the carpet with his wife and his “equal.” I’m assuming that Amal didn’t want to dissect the China theme too hard, and simply went with a pretty red dress (red is an important color in China). I guess I’m fine with this dress…you know me, I don’t like so many tiers and ruffles, but it’s fine. The top of the dress fits beautifully, although whenever she wears sleeveless, I’m reminded again of her terrible posture. STAND UP STRAIGHT, AMAL. And hey, at least she didn’t screw up her entire look with a pair of ill-advised gloves.

I love this dress. Best dress of the night, easily!

    • denisemich says:

It reminds me of the Jetsons

      • noway says:

I like this dress a lot too, but you are right now all I can think of is the Jetsons. I guess George is now George Jetson.

    • Judyk says:

@ Prissa–totally agree. Best dress of the night.

Before I saw it, I was beginning to think this was a Halloween Ball in April.

    • claire says:

Agreed! It’s gorgeous. That color is just beautiful and the little details, the fit…all perfect.

    • MamaSays says:

I love the dress but everytime I see Amal she freaks me out. She looks exactly like my ex-mother-in-law. *shudder* I hope for George’s sake that’s where the similarities end.

    • Mary-Alice says:

Fantastic dress by a fantastic designer. Wish I could wear his clothes. Sigh.

  2. Lahdidahbaby says:

Red is Amal’s color. Thank god she left the gloves in the glove compartment. Nice look.

  3. PoppyAdair says:

John Galliano? Interesting choice for an alleged human rights lawyer. But as usual she does appear thirsty for attention.

The dress is a bit much imho. And yes, she needs to stand up straight more.

    • CM says:

Maybe she just picked a pretty dress?

      • noway says:

Anna Wintour helped with this dress. There is an instagram pic. with Amal and Anna at a fitting. Anna behind any of Amal’s clothes really does bother me, because I am with Tim Gunn. I don’t like Anna at all.

Amal is really getting too thin. This dress with all the tiers should have made her look a lot more curvy. She can pull this dress off, because she is scary model thin, and that is disconcerting. Still she looks nice and the dress is very stunning on her. George, who I generally love, looks like Mr. Peanut.

      • CM says:

No, I meant: maybe it’s not a political statement. She/whoever picked the best dress for her. She looks amazing, in my opinion.

P.s. I’m Jewish. Galliano is c*ck but I can appreciate an amazing dress.

      • Dani says:

I doubt she just picked a pretty dress. She’s not an airhead celebrity who just doesn’t care/doesn’t remember/doesn’t know what happened. She prides herself as being a human rights lawyer and above everyone. The least she could do to prove everyone that she isn’t some fameh* is not support an open antisemitic piece of sh*t.

      • noway says:

I don’t think it was meant as a political statement either, just that Anna Wintour is behind her fashion style and that kind of bothers me. I agree Galliano is c*ck, but this is gorgeous dress and with her very thin and tall frame she pulls it off amazingly well.

      • Katherine says:

Oh, so it’s okay then? SMH.

I agree with you, Dani. You don’t drop your principles for a “pretty dress.”

    • Rach says:

Thirsty if she’s enjoying herself and miserable as sin if she doesn’t smile. Poor girl can’t win.

      • V4Real says:

When George and Amal first got together a lot of people were saying she was too good for him. She’s above all this Hollywood nonsense. She was only at the Oscars to support her hubby. Now you constantly see her camera ready for the paps. Here she is at the gala with George . When was the last time you’ve seen George at The Met Gala; Amal is loving all the attention and fame that comes with being married to an ALister.

Like I said before this is probably the most expensive contract George has ever signed.

      • claire says:

LOL. What do you expect her to do? And what is wrong with enjoying the perks? They’re perks!

I can just see it now. No honey, I can’t go out in public with you to events. If I smile, the internet will yell at me and say I’m enjoying myself! Can’t have that!

        hahahaha.

    • Tessy says:

John Galliano always did the best dresses. He was so very drunk when he said that horrible stuff and in spite of what they say about drunks showing their true colours, I remember the days when I used to over imbibe. Some of the stuff I said that I would never have said and definitely didn’t feel when sober; was totally mortified by myself and it was nothing near as bad as that. So I’m hoping it was a stupid drunken rant that he doesn’t really feel. I can give him a pass if that’s the case, he paid a high price for his behaviour.

    • Annabell says:

Galliano’s anti-Semitic outburst in a Parisian cafe in 2011 led to him losing his position Dior. I am dumb founded that Anna-I-can-do-no-wrong Wintour, chose Amal Clooney, who is right now the highest profile muslim woman, to show case his return to the met. The Clooney’s are stupid to become part of this roll out of Galliano as the fashion industry slowly lets him back into the fold. Anna arranged for Galliano to take up a post with De La Renta (Amal’s wedding dress) who offered Galliano residency at his label in 2013, representing his first steps back into the fashion word. His real roll out only started 8 weeks ago. The met ball and the Clooney’s provided Anna with a perfect storm. See in many of the pictures Galliano stands behind Amal like an obedient servant. The Clooney’s do appear to be in awe of Anna, and these days they appear to be easily bought by the price of a dress, and the ongoing guarantee of Anna-Almighty’s continued friendship. There is more to play here than we can imagine we will have to wait and see what happens next????? Begs the question – why is this hi profile muslim human right lawyer trying to make the unacceptable face of antisemitism acceptable and normal, when in fact she should distance herself as much as possible, letting someone else wear the dress, would have been the tasteful thing to do. imo

      • Cleo says:

        Well said Annabell.

      • siri says:

She could have simply made a different choice of designer, you are absolutely correct about this. But I don’t think the Clooneys are aware of Wintour’s play, or that they truly care a lot about other people’s sensitivities. They ARE hypocrites, and far too egocentric to be able to see the whole picture. I also believe George went to this circus for his wife- she’s the one loving the parade. The MET used to be a rather cultural, stylish event with an artistic approach- just look what happened to it over the last couple of years…

      • Katherine says:

Bravo, Annabell. I just don’t want to hear all these excuses for her because this is fashion. Fashion? Really? That is somehow more important than taking a stand for decency?

      • jwoolman says:

        Annabell- Amal isn’t Muslim.

      • siri says:

@jwoolman: Her father is Druze, her mother Sunni Muslim, so it does make for Muslim roots.

    • LeAnn Stinks says:

      Poppy,

I hear you. You are not the only one who doesn’t think much of “the human rights” barrister. I would probably have a better appreciation of this gown if it was on someone I like and admire.

      • Karen says:

She might be a human rights lawyer. But she has represented plenty of despots and human right violators too.

    • lisa says:

her husband shills for nestle. they care about human rights when it is convenient.

    • Mary-Alice says:

You mean, aside from the fact that he is a human and has rights like every other human? I think you need to refresh your knowledge on “human rights”. It’s not about “rights for the humans I like”. It’s about the universal rights of every human. Yes, even those you or I dislike. Galliano, to the best of my knowledge, is human. I happen to have a brother who is a human rights lawyer, Canadian, and you know what? The more challenging clients he defends, the brighter his star shines. It has nothing to do with his personal likes or dislikes but he did wear Galliano suits. On purpose. For which I deeply respect him and appreciate the way he stood up against the sheep flock attitude. It’s also about compassion. I’m appalled by the number of people on this blog who are unwilling and unable to show understanding and give another human a second chance when this person has been forgiven by the representatives of the Jewish community themselves. It speaks more about the people here than about Galliano.

  4. Katebush says:

This dress is amazing in the closeup photos it fits her like a glove. Looks like a dress for flamenco dancing!

  5. Div says:

One of my favorite looks of the night. She looks amazing.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

      Agree. Love it.

    • Loulou says:

Yeah she looks great. And her hair is fantastic.

      • Belle Epoch says:

I’m getting tired of the flowing locks of raven hair every time we see her. Has she ever done an up-do or ANYTHING else with her hair? I know she has great hair/extensions but sometimes putting hair up is more elegant.

      • siri says:

@Belle Epoche: it wouldn’t suit her to put it up. Her hair is her major asset, and her face is far to small and long to have it up. She wouldn’t look pretty at all.

    • mia girl says:

The bodice on this dress is so amazing.
      But I hate the shoes.

      • I Choose Me says:

Yes love the bodice and this shade of red is a fabulous colour on her. I could do without the layers of ruffles but I’m not the one wearing it so.

    • jane16 says:

      Also agree.

  6. Bea says:

Galliano might be a dickhead but his creative genius is undeniable. Easily the most beautiful dress of the night.

  7. India says:

I love everything about this dress. Amal looks amazing!

  8. lower-case deb says:

the top part reminds me of the armor of the terracotta soldiers
    https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/cb/cd/5e/cbcd5e5e1979a8961c0f3f1746cd16ee.jpg

i think it’s a nice twist to the gala’s theme, very subtle and shows a bit of thought.

but considering that it has armors and soldiering in mind, it’d be better served if Amal doesn’t slouch so much.

    • Sisi says:

yeah I’m really curious to see what the concept is behind this dress, because it reminds me not of Chinese armor, but Japanese red-lacquered armor, which would be wrong for the MET theme.

      • lower-case deb says:

aha! now that you’ve mentioned it i can see it. indeed now i wonder the design idea behind it too.

  9. Elisabeth says:

She reminds me of Peneloppe Cruz : she has a fiery character and I don’t think she’s easy going. I expect they must have arguments behind closed doors

    • Lori says:

The bodice resembled some of the samurai armor that I saw at the LACMA exhibit a few months ago. When I saw that exhibit, I kept imagining conversations with Tim Gunn (not Anna Wintour, Bleccchhhh) about how some of the hammered metal could be repurposed for fashion…because I am shallow like that. 😉

    • Heathering says:

She always strikes me as devoid of all real passion (except for flashbulbs). I cannot imagine fire but, rather, childlike hissy-fits and demands with lots of foot stamping. “Buuuu bu but, I want to pap walk there today, in those mink crocodile snake 6″ boots and it’s not fair if I can’t. And you must get me a big job to pretend to do tomorrow, George or I’ll scweeeem and scweeeem until I sick up a lettuce leaf… I will and mama will get you.”

^^^ If we’re imagining behind the Clooney adjoining (locked through doors) suites at the Carlyle front facade.

      • siri says:

Perhaps not the foot stamping, but rather the sneaky way of passive-aggressive threatening…They always look like they are in some sort of conspiracy, whispering into each others ears, but maybe he just gives her directions;-) She’s a fast learner, so her intelligence at least is brought to some use here;-) What I find annoying is her coy look at times, because behind closed doors I’m sure she’s anything but shy/demure. She is fast becoming the better actor of the two.

  10. Elisa the I. says:

    Just WOW. very glamourous!

  11. Katebush says:

I keep comin back to this dress, it’s fab! I agree it does look like armour, wonder what the top is made of? Looks like patent leather perhaps?

  12. Tracy says:

They both look exhausted to me.

(And while I enjoy this blog, no, I don’t’the “know you” and your opinion on tiers and ruffles. Good grief, are gossip bloggers trying to become ‘personalities’ now too? Staaaahp.)

    • Anastasia says:

I’ve been reading this site for about as long as it’s been around, so I did know what Kaiser was referring to. Also, one of them (can’t remember who–Bedhead?) doesn’t like bangs. Maybe it’s Kaiser?

Anyway, you do get to know the three ladies who write this blog after a while.

    • Nikki says:

Disagree Kaiser and Bedhead shouldn’t put their opinions in, and actually found your comment harsh, like: just tell us about celebrities, but keep your non-famous self out of it! It’s a discussion forum, and their opinions are often what get us started. I’ve gotten to know several of the folks who respond also, and look forward to their contributions too. LAK knows everything about royalty, etc. etc. keep reading Celebitchy, and you’ll end up hooked!

    • siri says:

Are you serious? People start blogs BECAUSE they have an opinion on something, and want to share/ discuss it with others! If you just want information, there’s always Wikipedia;-)

    • mia girl says:

Well, I’ve got to say that the bloggers on this site, Celebitchy, Kaiser and Bedhead are not mere “personalities”… they are ROCK STARS.

It’s us commenters who tend to be the “personalities” around these parts. Staaaaph by this site more often and join us. You’ll have fun.

  13. Sofia says:

Amal looks amazing. George looks old. Like shockingly aged. I did a double take at the pictures to check it was really him!

    • Chrissy says:

He looks really old. He also looks like he’s in pain – stiff, grimacing and seemingly gritting his teeth. Amal looks lovely (but really too thin and her posture is really bad IMO). The dress is beautiful. Red is definitely her colour.

  14. jinni says:

I really hate her posture and it’s an alright dress. That coat make Clooney look like he has a gut that he’s trying to hide unsuccessfully.

    • Pandy says:

Yeah, she’s slumping and her shoulders are up in most photos. The pic with George’s hand on her waist is a weird angle – but I can totally see how she’s going to be a scrunched and scrawny looking old lady in it. Yikes.

  15. Kaley says:

    Stunning. Red is her color.

  16. aang says:

Wow, she looks amazing. He looks like he is in pain. I have never been a Clooney fan but I feel sorry for him. My mother lived with chronic back pain and it can really make life rough.

  17. Jayna says:

That gown is amazing. When you really see photos of it up close, the detail, just something to behold. She looked stunning in it, and red is her color. The gown is a work of art.

  18. aquarius64 says:

    LOVED the dress.

  19. lowercaselois says:

I am sorry , but I find this a passive aggressive move to wear this gown. I think she will do anything to get the attention. She is a confused human rights lawyer.

    • PoppyAdair says:

I totally agree with you. This seems to be yet another attention grab. I just wonder if any Columbia law students will call her out on it.

    • Liberty says:

I have to agree. Yes a beautiful dress. No for a “human rights” lawyer, particularly at an event of this level where the world’s eyes are upon you.

And there is no pleading “she didn’t know” — her mother is a journalist, her sister works in fashion, and she can look the designer up online herself. And our Future Leader George? I’m guessing he failed the leadership sensitivity test right here on a red carpet.

      • PoppyAdair says:

Plus she is an Arab wearing anti-Semitic Galliano. That screams attention w*ore to me, and I don’t buy any arguments that she only wore what Nuclear Wintour told her to wear.

      • Lori says:

I’m not so much put off by the idea of an Arab woman wearing a gown from an anti-Semitic designer, notwithstanding my own Jewish heritage. I do find it interesting, however, that she is wearing a gown from someone who was convicted of a hate crime, at the same time that she is prosecuting (as part of a team) another person charged with a hate crime in the European Court of Human Rights. I know that her views are not necessarily synonymous with those of her client, the Armenian government…but still.

    • Jib says:

I think this “human rights lawyer” has a great PR machine, courtesy of hubby. She was going to serve on that Gaza panel, investigating Israel, which Israel called a “witch hunt,” but then backed out after word got out. Also, she is Muslim, which should make her a bit more sensitive to the fact that Galliano is an avowed anti-Semite. So either she is really not too smart so she didn’t make the connection, or she is anti-Semitic. Either way, I continue lowering my opinion of her.

The gown is gorgeous, but big deal. It’s got a history. And she is getting scary skinny.

      • siri says:

I would think she’s not that smart, honestly. It’s very possible she doesn’t even know about Galliano’s ranting. And IF she knew, I doubt she cares. She doesn’t strike me as very considerate of other people’s sensitivities. She’s still the little princess she was raised to become. She wanted a fairytale, and she thinks she got it. And her upbringing probably was at least not overly ‘pro-Semitic’, so to speak. I think she backed out of the Gaza investigation commisssion because of George being a HW player, fearing professional backlash. In many ways, these two people are the definition of hypocrites.

  20. Lucy2 says:

I don’t think I’d choose Galliano myself, but that dress is pretty great.

  21. Boringlittletit says:

I don’t like it. Anna Wintour’s daughter had the dress of the night for me: Amals looks tacky in comparison.

  22. QQ says:

I Like The dress and is On theme but it’s Not The Night’s winner

  23. Debbie says:

    She looks like the emoji.

  24. Lilacflowers says:

I think the dress is beautiful and amazing but for some reason it reminds me of a Project Runway unconventional materials challenge, like it was made out of duct tape and red solo cups?

  25. Dawn says:

She looks okay I guess but please tell me in what way that reflects the Chinese theme? I just don’t see it.

    • Fa says:

It doesn’t reflect the theme, it is safe choice, the met gala is to have fun & wear daring outfits, the media is barely talking abt her dress, I think the most daring outfit is Rihanna everyone is talking abt that’s the main thing she wanted the attention on her & she got

  26. Jag says:

I like the color on her but the dress is okay. She looks pretty.

George, on the other hand, needs a better tailor. He looks like he’s one full breath away from popping out of his stuffed shirt.

    • jen2 says:

Like the color but she needs to switch up her over done blow out hair style and learn what good posture can do to make a dress look good, even when it is not spectacular. Colin Firth and his wife also wore red and tails. Mr. Clooney could take lessons from Colin. Colin’s suit had a perfect fit and he looks like an English Gentleman not a waiter–like George.

  27. Nikki says:

Wow, tiny minority here, but I don’t like Amal’s dress at all. The top, though intricately sewn, looks from a distant to have the same fit as if it was a red sequined tube top from a seventies prom. I love the skirt though.

    • Don't kill me I'm French says:

The dress is amazing ( the details!!) but I dislike her look

  28. Lucy says:

I didn’t like it at all when I first saw it, but now I think it’s fantastic. Great color, unusual execution, perfect fitting. And she’s a beautiful woman, of course.

  29. LadyJane says:

Amal is stunning and I am a fan but STAND UP STRAIGHT.

  30. Catelina says:

The skirt of this dress is stunning to me, she looks great. Would’ve been better overall affect with some kind of jewelry. She looked way more comfortable walking the carpet here than she did at the globes, so this was a win for them I think.

  31. mimi says:

they look stunning – pretty sure she’s anorexic and that’s why she hunches over like that.

  32. Jensbend says:

Every time I see a photo of George Clooney I keep asking myself, “What is going on with his health?” He’s aging so quickly. Is it that he’s in chronic pain? That’s all that can account for the fact that he’s aging years in months. Or too much of his own tequila or other recreational pleasures.

    • Heathering says:

It may be down to some pain – although that makes her reported choice of birthday gift for him very odd (a new super fast Porsche she’s umm ‘buying’ in what I suspect is likely that product placement buying way the Clooneys excel at since coupling). Chronic neck and spinal pain coupled with sports cars seems a lethal combo.

He looks to be being eaten up with worry and… something from the inside. Physically he looks shockingly unwell and aged and it’s been a rapid and dramatic (around a year) onset. But it’s the eyes. No sparkle, no nothing really – just hollow; even when staged to gaze at his ‘lady love’.

He seems to have u-turned on all past George Clooney approaches to everything of his known past. All in the name of a ‘marriage’ which seems to require constant promotion and curating to appear ‘real’. Call me a tin-foil hatter if you like, but too much about his attachment to her seems unconvincing and forced. And that may be the real source of pain and drain now apparent.

Anyhow, she looks VERY put together, being created does suit her.

      • Jensbend says:

IMO the decline started well before the marriage. The skin tone has been gray for years now. With chronic pain comes painkillers. They suck the life out of you and steal the soul. If it is painkillers, I wish he’d dedicate himself to seeking alternative care. It’s hard and sad to look at him.

      • Lori says:

Yeah, he really has done a U-turn, hasn’t he? And for what exactly? He didn’t need more fame and attention. I wonder if she has changed from when he first met her, or if she just hid her fame-seeking ways successfully.

I notice two things when I see them: a) they are always looking in different directions (for her, probably at the camera), and b) he is either gripping her hand tightly or dragging her around by her arm. In contrast, another “celebrity,” Seth Meyers, who is married to a *real* human rights lawyer and advocate for human trafficking survivors, appears in sync with his spouse at the same event, albeit not exactly happy to be there:

        http://www.justjared.com/photo-gallery/3363120/andy-cohen-met-gala-sjp-02a/

      • Heathering says:

Lori, I think George often looks like he’s trying to drag or gee her along away from temptation to overindulge in her obvious love for the cameras and reflected glory. He knows her showboating comes over as lacking class.

Even when they pose it looks disconnected. They lean away from each other even when appearing close. And rather than George naturally presenting her as his partner, she thrusts herself forward in a conspicuously “I’m the focus” manner. If she were a real and committed career woman, she would appreciate that at an event such as this she has no earned entitlement except as her husband’s +1. Yet she has been keen to embrace all the measures taken by (Wintour, her mother etc) to PR her into being considered a celebrity in her own ‘right’. I ask on what grounds has she assumed celebrity beyond by marriage association and presenting herself as a celebrity for celebrity sake? Does being given free clothes to wear now constitute as enough to be someone of note? One day last week, her two outfits for pap walking added up to $20,000+ (ONE DAY!). All this belies her supposed commitment to being a leader in her own field (apparently that’s the Law). Her priorities are now clear and they are not ones I can admire, and are no different to the Ks.

Also, I wonder if George is often appearing to shepherd her along because of the rumour he feels he’s had to apologise at times over her “do you know who I am” behaviour in hotels, restaurants, and at parties. It’s almost as if he was keeping her close last night to avoid her embarrassing him.

Whatever, even in stagey ‘love gazes’ the body language strikes as off and the eyes are dead.

      • siri says:

He stated many times he is in constant pain, and he doesn’t sleep well. Both is plenty to make you look like that. To that, this over promotion of a marriage that lacks any warmth, at least from the outside. She needs to be entertained, obviously does neither eat, nor cook, and I truly think he knows he made a mistake, whatever the reasons. The are trying to sell like crazy, and most people are not willing to buy- that must be exhausting. George looks happiest when out and about with friends (like lately Sacha Baron Cohen), and it never was any different. But instead, he now not only has to ‘take care’ of her, but of her extented family as well (like bringing them all to his set, or celebrating her sister’s birthday). I also think he’s missing CA, the warm weather, and of course Rande 😉 He will soon tire of her and her clan- but HE did choose his image over real life. He made a deal, and I don’t think there’s an easy way out of it.

  33. Kiddo says:

It’s a beautiful dress and she wears it well, but I’m not seeing a homage to China, outside of maybe the deep red?

  34. Queenbee says:

In so many pictures it looks like she is still posing and George is leading her away. She does seem to enjoy the attention. Beautiful dress, but did we expect anything else? It’s refreshing to see classy dresses versus Kim, Beyoncé, and JLo.

  35. Bishg says:

    George is Constipated Granpa.

    Amal looks wonderful.

  36. ¡mire usted! says:

George and Amal look stunning together. The dress suits her beautifully. I really like how her hair is styled too.

  37. Cody says:

In 2011, Galliano was convicted by the French court of hurling anti-semetic slurs in a bar. I don’t care what Anna Wintour told Amal to wear or how pretty the gown is, as of the Jewish faith, I am insulted by what she wore. If she thinks she is wearing this to make a political statement, than Amal is misguided. It is the wrong kind of publicity. Sophistication and classy is not only how you dress ,but is a state of mind and not just because you marry a famous actor.

  38. Louise says:

George looks like a butler and quite short?

  39. meme says:

It’s Galliano and it’s divine. Classiest couple there.

  40. jules says:

I wonder if she truly enjoys going to these events or finds them too frivolous and just part of the job — not the job as a Human Rights Lawyer, but as the wife of a major Hollywood celebrity.

    • PoppyAdair says:

If she were truly a human rights lawyer (and the jury is still out on that), she would not wear a John Galliano design. It is particularly provocative because she is an Arab. Sometimes a pretty dress is not just a pretty dress.

      • Robin says:

Exactly, PoppyAdair. She’s a very junior barrister and has been attached to some pretty questionable cases. Her choice of Galliano is just mystifying for someone who is supposed to be so intelligent and concerned with human rights, and she obviously loves the attention she gets from being married to George Clooney.

      • oneshot says:

all the comments on her choice of a Galliano* dress somehow making her an an anti-Semite because she’s Arab, and no comment on the Je Suis Charlie pin she wore at the Golden Globes?

        * (who has acknowledged the wrongness of his actions and appears to be genuinely contrite/reformed)

      • PoppyAdair says:

She probably isn’t anti-Semitic, but Galliano was convicted of a hate crime in France and she is (allegedly) a member of a legal team seeking to prosecute hate crimes right now. Moreover, her client list includes some very questionable people accused of committing human rights violations. So for an Arab Muslim attorney to wear a dress designed by a man convicted of anti-Semitic hate crimes at fashion’s main annual event strikes me as a very odd and provocative decision. All the “Je Suis Charlie” pins in the world doesn’t change the bizarreness of her dress choice last night.

      • jwoolman says:

Poppy- she’s not Muslim. She is Druze. Might as well call Catholics Jews since they started out as Jews… In both cases, the religions went their separate ways very early and share some characteristics but also are quite different. Druze do not consider themselves to be Muslim, which is the most relevant point. I don’t know how she identifies ethnically, but many Lebanese do not identify as Arab although Arabic is spoken there. Lebanon is a very complex country, ethnically and religiously. For example, they have a large Christian population, going back to the early days of Christianity. I went to school with a Lebanese Catholic. Not all people in the Middle East are Arabs. For example, few Iranians are Arab and the official language is Farsi (Persian), not Arabic. There are very few Arabs in Afghanistan also and other languages are spoken instead of Arabic.

    • jinni says:

George didn’t have to go to the Met gala, that’s not a part of his job. Hell, he doesn’t even need to go to most movie award ceremonies which are at least a part of the industry he works in. So, I highly doubt she’s there because she has no choice but to attend because she has to support her husband’s work.

It’s getting really annoying how everyone is acting like being at these glamorous events, where she gets to wear haute couture from the top designers, and everyone fawns over her and act like she’s this great beauty and fashion icon are such trying ordeals that she’s forced to endure because she married Clooney. She wants this, she is game for all the “frivolous” stuff that everyone else seems to think she’s too high-minded to enjoy.

    • Blue says:

I think she truly enjoys attending events like these and all the attention It’s probably one of the best things about being married to George Clooney she gets to be a famous celebrity. I know she’s supposed to be the smartest human rights lawyer in the world but to me she’s just another attention loving celebrity.

      • PoppyAdair says:

I tend to agree, Blue. Most of the human rights workers and attorneys I have met are far too busy to care about the paparazzi and posing in new outfits. If she were using her newfound celebrity to highlight important human rights causes, that might change my opinion of her. But for someone so high profile she has remained remarkable reticent.

  41. siri says:

The color is nice on her, but I don’t like the top of the dress. I don’t think George was very eager to attend, but Amal seems to love that kind of show-off. As for the theme, it’s a bit disappointing that so many participants didn’t even try. I’ve seen Karolina Kurkova with a very sexy, interesting choice, Chloe Sevigny with some East-meets-West design , or Wintour’s daughter Bee Shaffer with an inspired look, but mostly, it was sort of What-I-think-China-means fashion, and rather silly looking (SJP). The best look of the night, from what I’ve seen, is this dress from Carolina Herrera:

  42. Carmen says:

That color is stunning on her. But the style looks more Flamenco than Chinese.

  43. Jayna says:

When I come back to this, it’s one of my favorite gowns of the night.

  44. Lorelei says:

I’m not surprised at Amal’s choice of designer at all. She has always been an anti-Semite. Her gown looks like something from Alice in Wonderland.

    • Jaded says:

So she chose the designer because she agreed with his anti-semitic screed? Doubt it.

  45. weirswalker says:

She looks like she has osteoporosis in that picture where she is bending a little bit…and her arms are so thin…she doesn’t look healthy at all…nice dress though…

  46. Heathering says:

I hope the fabric and construction were lightweight in the wearing because that skirt is a lot of awkward angled volume for what we know to be her poorly muscle toned waif frame having to walk/strut it.

I like the colour and bodice although, even with the best foundation, it confirms for me the rumoured recent breast augmentation.

I think she looks well in it but don’t think it the best of dresses. As a kid I had a flamenco doll which looked similar to her.

Although, any credibility left for the Gala disappeared entirely when Twitter had pics of a Housewife from wherever on the RC. Although it seems celeb (by attachment) is Amal’s priority in life, even top-billing in a show losing it’s former draw, attending this (as Clooney) seems a bit of downgrade these days. If Amal weren’t Wintour’s new Kardashian style project, pre-Alamuddins George would not have graced it with his grin and bear.

  47. Robin says:

Red is her color, and her makeup and hair (extensions) look very nice. Love the shoes. But the dress itself is awful. The bodice looks like some kind of battle breastplate and the skirt looks like something out of the Jetsons (as someone else said). And for the allegedly super-intelligent, accomplished human rights barrister deliberately to choose to wear a dress designed by an anti-Semitic bigot…well, what an appalling thing to do.

She’s also gone from fashionably thin to scary skinny. Hope she can put on a bit of weight, she just looks unhealthy now.

    • oneshot says:

John Galliano is an ass but unlike many, many fashion industry assh*les, he has acknowledged his wrongs and apologised repeatedly for what he did, and I’m inclined to believe he is sincere, if the Anti Defamation League has forgiven him.

I don’t see any such judgement being levelled against celebs who wore Chanel – a house that bears the name of a woman who tried to have her Jewish business partners arrested by the Nazis and remained unrepentant/in denial of her actions to the end of her life.

      • Jib says:

I’m always bringing up Chanel as a HUGE Nazi enabler and maybe even participant. Her work still stinks of death to me. And Amal should have known better than to wear this.

      • Katherine says:

Knowing that Coco Chanel worked for the Abwehr turning in Jews hiding from the nazis in Paris is so revolting that I can’t stomach the idea of her fashion house. Coco was very lucky that her connections helped her avoid a trial. She had to leave France for years following the war to avoid arrest and trial as a collaborator. Her nazi collaboration was ten times worse than French women who merely had affairs with nazi soldiers. Her actions caused the torture and death of people.

  48. E.M. MAXX says:

Please she is a full on Anti Semite and OLD Georgie boy should have looked around some more before settling for her . There are other smart ( non fame whores) out there .

    • Miss M says:

Perhaps he did, but no one was fool or desperate enough to fall for him…lol

  49. grace says:

Love the dress. Looks like she’s wearing a stack a dishes but still love the dress.

  50. Polly says:

I like the dress but other than it being red, I can’t see much tie in to the theme. Dresses now at the Met Gala are too safe in their interpretations of the theme. Go big or go home! (Need to use that on the Rihanna thread ha).

  51. Nimbolicious says:

I call boob job. She wasn’t that stacked before when she was heavier. The boobs have gotten bigger as she’s wasted away. Girl’s gettin’ the bobble-head look. And I’d watch it with the red lips in years to come. I find bright lips to be super aging and even garish at a certain point…..

  52. Wisteria says:

Good color on her. She’s married to a famous actor. Not surprising she gets papped more. Comes with the territory. If she wasn’t photographed much, she’d be called a snob. Girl can’t win either way.

    • noway says:

It’s not the fact that she is getting papped I think that bothers a lot of people, it is the fact that she routinely gets papped dressed in thousand dollars outfits with her hair and makeup perfectly done. She also never wears the same thing twice. Direct Mail has the designer info and cost on all of her outfits she has been papped at in NYC, and the figure is astounding.

Other then a brief moment of them at a bar in Cabo and she was in a swim cover, I don’t think I have seen this woman look like she wasn’t ready for a camera shot since she got married. That was a few weeks after being married. She is either perfected knowing when and where the paps are, or they are calling them, or she never goes out without the designer attire and perfectly coifed hairdo. All scenarios to me make her seem to be far more interested in the fame aspect of being Mrs. Clooney. Before you say anything, previous to being married to George she did on occasions look like a not perfectly coifed person in pictures.

      • Lori says:

Also, she gets papped almost every.single.day in a city of over eight million people, at close range. There’s no way that she isn’t calling the paps herself, or having someone else do it for her. The fact that she’s routinely wearing Valli or some other designer straight off the runway (or not even on the runway yet!) post marriage shows that her desire for product placement and attention is no accident.

    • Jib says:

Carolyn Bessette was continually papped. Look at old pictures of her and compare to Amal to see that one woman didn’t want to be papped and the other one just thrives on it!!

      • noway says:

That is true, also Carolyn Bessette got papped in normal non designer threads and her hair in ponytail and not perfectly coifed sometimes. Carolyn still looked beautiful, but more normal. Carolyn also wore the outfits more than once too.

  53. Anguishedcorn says:

    She is amazing. Amazing.

Sadly, I think that is not the skin color of a healthy man.

  54. TessD says:

Is it me or is he clutching on to her on every picture the way Tom Cruise did with Katie Holmes?

  55. Jenny says:

Amal’s dress is beautiful, the only dress I liked at all this year. Clooney looks very ill, completely exhausted. And shockingly aged. He looks 70 not 50 something. Is it the back pain or some other serious illness? Perhaps Amal is exhausting him?
