Emma Stone in Dior at Cannes ‘Irrational Man’ premiere: lovely or boring?

FFN_Cannes_IrrationalPrem_CHP_051515_51742038

The Cannes Film Festival premiere of Woody Allen’s Irrational Man was held last night, and Joaquin Phoenix still did not show up. Which is interesting, and I’m guessing there’s some larger story there. But with Joaquin’s absence, that meant there was even more focus on Emma Stone and Parker Posey. And OMG.

Let’s start with Emma in this Christian Dior. It’s deceptively simple, beautifully tailored (which is unexpected for Raf Simons’ reign), pale and lacy. I guess I should hate it since I’m not crazy about lace and I was hoping Emma would wear something bright. But I don’t hate it at all. I think she looks very beautiful and very “Emma”. I liked that she went high drama with her updo (I’m including a photo of the back of her head because it’s actually one of the most beautiful photos from the group) and I love the diamond choker. She looks sophisticated but not too “mature.” She looks ethereal without looking bridal. It’s a difficult balance and she pulls it off.

As for Parker Posey… OMG. This is apparently a custom look by “Electric Feathers.” It’s sort of “when Gloria Swanson met Mrs. Roper.” And I kind of think it’s perfect. It’s ‘70s, it’s crazy, it looks cheap, and it’s totally “Parker Posey.” Note to Eva Mendes: this is how to work a turban.

More photos from the premiere… Michelle Rodriguez in Elie Saab. Very pretty.

Melissa George in Schiaparelli Spring 2015. High fashion shorts with a long coat? Nope.

Cheryl Fernandez-Versini (formerly Cheryl Cole) wore this high-drama Ralph & Russo Spring 2015 gown. It’s a good look for a “fashion girl” at Cannes. I almost didn’t recognize her though – did she have some work done?

Love Emma, boring dress but love Emma. And the dress on Cheryl was a bit too stiff and formal for Cannes, but beautiful dress.

  2. Seraphina says:

I love Emma but the dress is boring. She still looks great though and the dress fits like a glove. Cheryl’s dress is wow, but I think a bit too much for Cannes. It’s France in late spring, lite and breezy with beautiful colors is what I imagine.

  3. bettyrose says:

Emma Stone is wearing a wedding dress and premiering in a Woody Allen film. Just, why, on both counts?

    • mystified says:

      Hah! Great question.

    • Mispronounced Name Dropper says:

She obviously doesn’t believe Woody did it or she doesn’t care.

      • bettyrose says:

I think young actresses probably tell themselves it’s okay because it’ll take their careers to another level and so many others have have traveled that route before them – like four decades worth of ingenues rolling interchangeably through his films, like artsy Bond girls. But there’s really no guarantee this will move her career to a new level …cough Mira Sorvino cough…

      • Franca says:

To be fair, he hasn’t been charged, has he? Has it been proven that he did it? I’m really asking, I don’t know all that much about it.

      • bettyrose says:

Franca- those accusations aside, he married a girl he helped raise who was the sister of his own children, which mirrors his obsession with that specific relationship power dynamic glorified by his films. Hollywood action films often portray similar age differences, but Allen is hailed as some kind of genius for doing that. It’s hard to feel good about actresses who want to work with him, assuming they have other options.

      • Mispronounced Name Dropper says:

@Bettyrose: Great points. If it’s any consolation I’ve stopped watching his films as a direct result of what I’ve read about him on this site.

      • qwerty says:

        @Franca

Yeah, and OJ was found innocent…

      • Kara says:

exactly bettyrose. if he is guilty or innocent in the dylan farrow case is another matter, he married his stepdaughter ffs. that should be enough to not go anyhwere near him, especially as a young woman.

but honestly i dont think Emma Stone or Cate Blanchett care either way. those are people who want to be at the top, no matter the cost.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I’m just so disappointed in her for working with Woody Allen.

  4. Lara K says:

The dress is stunning and I really like Emma…
But her face looks weird. Pinched. Not sure whats going on there.

    • Original T.C. says:

Yeah, there is something different about her face. It looks weirdly tightened and aged but maybe it’s done by the makeup artist or Botox? She looked like her normal self the day before at the photocall. I do like the dress on her. Fits her form like a glove.

P.S. Who are they trying to fool by not hugging or holding hands like other cast members with their director? You are still a pedophile and a child groomer Woody. Whether you hug or not hug your young actress!

    • Gea says:

Emma is one beauty , with that something special that oozes old Hollywood glamour. Perhaps, colour should be in richer tone but cut suits her body and line of dress goes well with her all physic. Parker Posey ah, I just love her and her eccentricity in what ever she does. Go darling, just show them how is done!

      • KBeth says:

I think that’s what I love about Emma, she reminds of “old Hollywood”……so lovely!

      • M.A.F. says:

How does she remind you both of Old Hollywood? If by “old” you mean the 1990’s sure, I’ll buy that but the Golden Era? No.

      • Nik says:

        @M.A.F.

Agreed. Her weaker performances are her roles in period films (i.e. Gangster Squad and Magic in the Moonlight). I couldn’t buy her as someone of those times. She’s looks and acts too modern to “belong” in those eras.

      • KBeth says:

I meant in terms of her appearance not necessarily the roles she chooses.

  5. Sugar says:

Emma, no no no! Pale girl, pale dress equals NO. Also, this is the time to pull out all the stops and do FASHION.

    • sills says:

In any other color I’d have really liked this, but as is she does look totally washed out. Pity cause it’s a lovely cut and it looks like she’s having a blast.

    • msw says:

I’m pale and sometimes I just have to say f it, I’m going to wear the hell out of that white shirt I love.

    • ava7 says:

Does everyone realize that the Dior designer/stylists put this look together? Sure, she has veto power, but I’m sure she listens to the “experts” when deciding what to wear.

  6. seijidan says:

Emma looks amazing! That choker added some edginess to her look and glad she went with an updo

  7. Sullivan says:

    Go Parker Posey!

  8. KG says:

Emma looks a lot healthier here than she has looked recently.

  9. Rachel says:

Why is Emma dressed for prom circa 1996?

    • M.A.F. says:

THANK YOU! I thought it was a Calvin Kline dress from the 90’s. And with the choker? I’m having flash backs.

    • Marmalazed says:

Yes! Looks exactly like a dress I bought for a formal in 1996 from the mall. Mine was black though with much cheaper fabric and it fit me more like an over-sized latex glove, simultaneously too tight and too loose. Good times.

  10. mystified says:

Do not know who Cheryl Fernandez-Versini /Cheryl Cole is, but black is not her color. She looks a lot like Camille Paglia who looks good in black but probably not that outfit.

    • Anne tommy says:

I know who Cole is but don’t know why the hell she’s there. Emma looks gorgeous.

    • Sopha says:

Cheryl Cole is a britpop singer, she was part of a girl band but she’s not in black. She’s in pinkish at the bottom of the post. Melissa George and Michelle Rodriguez are in black.

  11. kri says:

No way, Parker. When I saw that I thought she was wearing a wig for a sec. I’m sorry, but I hate turbans as a fashion accessory.

  12. guest says:

What’s with everybody sticking their legs out at 90 degree angles, in humungous slits on their dresses. It just looks stupid. Lol

  13. lower-case deb says:

reminds me a bit of Nicole Kidman and some of her Cannes appearances.

  14. Jayna says:

    Emma is perfection.

    Parker is a mess.

  15. suziekew says:

I love redheads and Emma (and Jessica Chastain) is one of the most beautiful. She is also my favorite actress….but no to the dress. You cannot see the dress next to her skin and the choker necklace is gorgeous but again it doesn’t show up on her neck – I had to look twice when I read she was wearing a necklace because I couldn’t see it! I love the cut and fit of the dress, just wish she had gone with a little bit of color. And yes, I agree with the poster earlier, her face looks a bit stiff.

  16. L. says:

I am having a hard time with these high necks/chocker style things. I never got the choker look. And I don’t do turtle necks soooo.. thats it. Ladies look amazing though.

    • Sea Dragon says:

The choker look works wonders, emphasizing a long neck and complimenting a square face like Emma’s. I wish chokers were always “in”. I’d have a huge collection.

  17. InvaderTak says:

Saturday posting? Youre going to spoil us!

Everything just feels like a retread. The 80’s and 90’s are back with a vengeance with the fashion. The film is just woody Allen making his movie but now even more out of touch. Uhg. Totally unnecessary all around.

    • M.A.F. says:

Now I know how my mom felt when the 60’s fashion started to come back in the late 90’s. She said “I should have kept my clothes”. And now? I’m echoing the same thing. I’m not digging that neon and flowers on everything is coming back.

  18. Franca says:

If I ever get married, I want the exact a wedding dress that looks exactly like Emma’s dress here.
And her face, God, she’s so pretty.

    Cheryl Cole’s dress is ugly.

  19. Flounder says:

    Parker posey forever

  20. Kiddo says:

Is Emma surfing in the top photo.

Parker Posey’s look is reminiscent of another Woody Allen character (outside of the Gaga references, obvs), but I don’t care enough to search.

  21. rudy says:

Emma Stone is gorgeous. I love the dress.

  22. j.eyre says:

I like the body of Emma’s dress but not the spiderweb effect the train has. However, like you, I am not a big lace fan so it may simply be a personal preference; in general, I love trains. Her hairdo is gorgeous and I like that chocker as well, thank you for the back shot.

I love Parker Posey’s outfit. I feel like the turban is the wrong color for the ensemble but I love the idea of it. Had I a flat stomach, I would wear that – love the fabric and the color of the outfit.

I don’t know what to do with Cheryl’s Too-Lazy-To-Go-Up-And-Check-Her-Last-Name’s-Spelling’s dress. The cut is lovely and it is tailored beautifully. I love the color but I don’t like the lace, and I think that goes beyond my lace aversion. My first reaction is the front bodice should have been the same solid material but I wonder if that would have been too matronly on someone (who seems) young. And I like the back but it is too much, I can’t figure out why, though – is it the cut out and the drape? Is it the pull through fishtail? I think it is too many things going on but I don’t know what to eliminate. I think I would eliminate the pull through and leave the cutout (with lace) and drape.

  23. Niisku says:

Emma looks very beautiful and I love her updo. The dress is pretty too.

And it is disappointing that she chose to work with Woody after the allegations came out, but apparently most people in Hollywood believe he’s innocent, which doesn’t surprise me a bit. It’s like they live in their own small bubble.

  24. LAK says:

Cheryl’s dress is ridiculous. I am rather enjoying Parker Posy’s get up. Emma’s dress is very blandly boring. It’s competing with Natalie Portman’s red one. What is it with DIOR this year?

    • Mary-Alice says:

Raf Simons. Minimalism would never fitDior as of Christian Dior’s esthetics. Don’t know what they were thinking hiring a designer with a clashing vision. Probably hoped for modernising the whole thing and as far as accessories and cosmetics go, they are making good money. The haute couture and PAP, though are a mess.

  25. Carmen says:

Emma Stone’s dress is lovely. Understated and elegant. Nothing boring about it.

  26. Brittany says:

Emma looks lovely! And is it just me or has she put on a bit of weight? She looked skeletal around Oscar time but she looks a lot better here.

  27. Miran says:

At first I didn’t realize Parker Posey was even wearing a turban and I thought it was just super fried, straw yellow hair. She was giving me Rumer Willis when she was blonde vibes.

  28. Veronica says:

I think that’s the classiest we’ve seen Michelle Rodriguez in a long time. Girl loves the sheer.

I wasn’t too wowed by Emma this year, honestly. The cocktail dress felt too busy, and the white is elegant on her but is boring. I’m also not fond of the seam work. Parker Posey may look silly at first glance, but look at all that personality on display!

    • RJ says:

Veronica I was just about to type that, then I saw your comment-Michelle looks absolutely lovely. I love her usual rough and tumbleness but she cleaned up good for this one 🙂

  29. TwistBarbie says:

Emma went “High drama” with her updo? Ummm…I disagree. Nice detail in the back to be sure but it’s subtle…with a lower-case “s”. That Ralph & Russo is quite special, it reminds me of something Lanvin would have done in the 30’s.

  30. Absolutely says:

What has Cheryl Cole done to herself? She used to be one of the most beautiful women I’ve ever seen…. Why do these women mess with their faces? Argh.

    • Naddie says:

She used to be more beautiful? Wow. When I looked at her face here, I was stunned by its perfection.

  31. Miss M says:

I like the whole look. But it is giving me a Nicole Kidman vibe. As if she worn something similar in the past.

  32. rudy says:

    Parker Posey Rocks
    Emma looks gorgeous.
