The tabloids have ended the relationship between Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal on this slow news week. This is despite the fact that no one really believed or even remembered that they were supposed to be together in the first place.

The closest a paparazzo ever got to photographing these two together was when they exited an office building minutes apart. (The office building was turned into a medical office, and Reese was supposedly pregnant by one far-fetched account.)

The tabloids had Jake playing father figure to Reese’s kids, and loving the fact that she was a hands-on mom.

Alas, it wasn’t mean to be. Reese doesn’t have the “emotional space” for a relationship.

Since Reese was out with friends without Jake, and there is still no evidence that they’re together, US Weekly decided that it’s time to call “uncle”

Reese Witherspoon had an evening of laughs and libations at L.A.’s La Terza on June 16 with pal Renée Zellweger and six other friends.

Missing? Beau Jake Gyllenhaal, 26. Though sources say the duo, who began dating in March (five months after her split from Ryan Phillippe, 32), had been getting serious in recent weeks – he bonded with her two kids and met her mom – Us Weekly has learned the couple have cooled.

“She has either called it off or is just taking a break,” says a Witherspoon source.

The hitch? If may have been too much, too soon for the actress, 31, still smarting from her divorce.

“She cares for Jake, but the timing is crappy,” says the insider. “She doesn’t have enough emotional space for him right now.”

Maybe these two were just friends, or maybe they were incredibly skilled at keeping their relationship under wraps. Still, without any pictures or evidence it’s hard to believe. Maybe they’ll be seen out at an event talking in a few months and everyone can say how nice it is that they remained friends.

Jake was seen out on 6/16 in NY with his parents and a “mystery female.” They all had dinner together at an Indian restaurant and then went for a walk afterwards.
