Emilia Clarke will never Google herself again after reading that she’s a ‘fat bitch’

I think the Mother of Dragons is so pretty! I know that’s not the most popular opinion – hating on Emilia Clarke seems to be the cool thing to do these days, but I think she does a decent job as Dany on Game of Thrones, and I find her very pretty and striking. Emilia covers the new issue of Marie Claire UK to promote not GoT, but her role as Sarah Connor in Terminator Genisys. I’ve been avoiding watching the trailer but then I saw a TV ad for the movie and… nope. I’m out. I like Emilia but I don’t understand why they made this movie at all (I’ll include the trailer at the end of the post). Some highlights from MC UK:

Trolls hating on her appearance: “I remember when everything first kicked off, I Googled myself. You just do; it’s instinct. But never again. It just takes that one person who says, ‘She’s a fat bitch,’ and you’re like, ‘I’m a fat bitch!'”

Why she turned down the Ana Steele role in 50 Shades: “I really wanted to work with Sam Taylor-Johnson because she’s f–king amazing. But there is a huge amount of nudity in the film. I’ll never say ‘I’m never doing nudity,’ because I’ve already done it, but I thought I might get stuck in a pigeonhole that I would have struggled to get out of.”

She lifted weights to prepare for Terminator Genisys: “Those f–king guns are super heavy. You’re running with them a lot of the time, and I needed to keep up with/be better than the boys. I needed to know what to do to have Arnold go, ‘Very nice.” That was my goal.”

On her love life: “I kept thinking that for clarity of mind, I had to be in one place. And then I just realized that’s not how this life is going to work. It makes [dating] absolutely impossible. I’m soppy and I do like to believe that when the right person comes along, it will work, because you want to make it work. Everyone else seems to manage it.”

[From Marie Claire UK]

Who in the world thinks Emilia is fat? I don’t get the internet sometimes. I also wonder if Emilia should continue to claim that she was a major contender for Fifty Shades. I mean, I’m sure she had meetings and I’m sure she was considered, but it’s my understanding that the studio really liked Dakota Johnson very quickly after she auditioned and did a “chemistry test” with Charlie Hunnam.

Here’s the trailer… I do enjoy Jason Clarke, but this is still a NO.

I thought she was J-Law from the cover pic.

I don’t watch GoT so I’ve got nothing left to say.

    ETA: J-Law with hair extensions.

Body shaming is a very powerful way for men – and I guess sometimes women – to feel a sense of control over something they can’t “own.” Emilia Clarke is the epitome of conventional attractiveness, and since we’ve all seen in her in full buff, there’s no secret spanx happening.

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Yep. I made a comment on a yahoo forum about not thinking that a certain celebrity was hot enough to hit on in front of her husband (Anna Faris–I said something like if I was a guy and I was going to risk getting punched in the face, I’m not going to hit on Anna. And then I said I thought she looked weird bc of the plastic surgery she got, etc)….well, let’s just say I was then told that I sounded like I was a jealous fat person. Even my NAME sounded fat. Like wtf?

      • Anne tommy says:

Calling someone fat is just a useful all purpose insult and a handy way of invalidating a woman’s opinion. The allegation is that If you object to the endless pornification, it’s because you’re fat. It’s not that it’s tacky and nasty and damaging- it’s just because you’re fat. Jealous cow. I am fatter than I would like to be but funnily enough I also objected to a lot of the endless stream of degrading nonsense when I was thin.

  3. Kiki says:

I just can’t with these celebrities…. The Internet hurt your feelings…. Boo Hoo. Put on your big girls or boys panties and just deal with it. #thickskinpeople.

    • Kristen says:

So because she’s a celebrity it’s okay for someone to call her a fat bitch? I’m sorry, but no, that is not okay.

    • k says:

… Words hurt. I’m not sure why you think celebrities are immune from that.

    • A~ says:

So being an adult means putting up with misogynist crap? I think the opposite is true.

    • sofia says:

I actually sympathize when a celebrity that’s not “out there” shares how they struggle with this type of BS. I can’t imagine what it feels like to have people you don’t know and who don’t really know you have all this opinions about you, specially about how you look, considering you can’t change it or even if you can’t you may not want to. Just like how weird must be to have photos of you taken by paps you don’t even noticed were photographing you. Seeing yourself from the outside must be really upsetting. Like having a private detective after you. Have you really imagine how that must feel like? Yes, they should expect a bit of that when acting on tv/films, but one thing is to expect that, other is to live that and understanding it. Your sense of self must get really unbalanced.

It’s cool to care about other people’s feelings too, even if they’re more public and successful.

    • perplexed says:

It sounds like she is dealing with it — she’s not googling herself anymore. I think that’s a wise decision. People may have the right to say what they want, but she also has the right to no engage with it. I don’t see how what she said can be faulted in anyway or could be perceived as not dealing with “it.” I wouldn’t google myself if I were famous.

  4. QQ says:

She looks super duper pretty in these pics, I think her CHARACTER’S arc is Boring and the character itself is a bit too white saviory BUT I don’t hate her in it or anything like that so I don’t get those who do

    Terminator: Misspelling Not doing it

  5. lemon says:

I like her on GoT but I know a lot of people think she’s a weak link. Loved her scenes with Jason Momoa.

I think the crazy thinspo people are the ones calling her fat. Probably they would fat shame 1993 Kate Moss.

  6. mom2two says:

Emilia Clarke is a beautiful woman. Anyone who calls her fat and the b word needs to have their head checked. I think she is very lovely and kind, even though I am not a fan of her acting skills on GoT. She’s not that great as Dany and Terminator will be hit, even though it looks awful.
She should stop with the “why I didn’t do Fifty Shades.” But I get her reluctance to do nudity anymore, after the first season of GoT, it was all she was asked about.

    • Kiki says:

I am with you on this one, I think her acting needs some work and enough on FSOG already that bs of a movie is so tired some already.

  7. KBeth says:

I like her, she seems genuinely sweet & funny. Plus, she was naked with Jason Momoa so there’s that…

  8. Samtha says:

She’s adorable. EVERY celebrity gets called things like that on the internet. It’s either fat bitch or anorexic bitch, if you’re a female.

  9. Lilacflowers says:

Hodor! It is known. That is all

  10. Betti says:

I like her, she comes across as just a really nice person. And anyone call her fat or a b*tch needs to go look in the mirror – she’s neither.

She does well with Danny on GoT and as others have said the character is rather vanilla and boring, generally naive. The show is filled with very experienced and great actors, who will eclipse the younger actors and i mean this in the kindest sense in that their inexperience is shown, particularly when the have to act beside Charles Dance and the like.

She’s got a good career ahead of her anyway.

  11. loud noises says:

i don’t know how to feel about the terminator trailer. on one hand it will probably be awful like all the new terminators. jason clarke is always great in anything he does, emelia clarke seems to be great too, but i can’t stand jai courtney. they need to stop trying to make him a thing.

    • jaye says:

Whaaaaaat? I’d climb Jai Courtney like a damn tree. But I’m an unrepentant slut soooo…there’s that.

      • loud noises says:

aw man i don’t see it! i’ll slut around with tom hardy any day. but jai courtney? well more for you then!!

      • jaye says:

:::tents fingers like Mr. Burns::: Eeeexcellent.

  12. jammypants says:

I like her. Good head on her shoulders. I thought her acting in season 1 was quite good! but after that, it all fell kind of flat, but I mostly blame the writing of her character.

  13. Chinoiserie says:

Emilia is adorable and Daenerys gets too much hate these days.

  14. SnarkGirl says:

The “fat bitch” comments are 50% motivated by envy and 50% by low IQ.

Envy because she’s young, very attractive (I think she’s beautiful), and making a success of her life. Low IQ because that’s the most creative insult stupid people can come up with. They can’t imagine or articulate any real critiques of her acting (or anything else) so they fall back on childish insult.

  15. eulalie says:

I think she does well on GoT. Any problems with her story arc seems to me to a result of the narrative rather than her acting.

This new Terminator movie irritates me. I taught a course once on apocalyptic rhetoric and used the first two movies in it, so I’m not happy that this movie seems to erase everything from the other four. The last X-Men movie and, to some extent, the How I Met Your Mother finale did, too, which makes me feel cheated, somehow.

  16. LAK says:

I adore TERMINATOR, but they keep ruining it with these re-imaginings that don’t fit the original premise. At least they continue the tradition of ignoring the abominable T3 and T4.

The only thing that irks me from this trailer is that Arnold’s terminator was completely incinerated at the end of T2 specifically because that was the only way to be sure to destroy his chip. It makes no sense that in this film he has been hanging around, chip and all, for the ten years they were waiting for Kyle Reece!!!!

  17. Maria A. says:

She looks perfectly fine and HEALTHY to me. People calling her fat have been brainwashed by seeing too many stick figures on the screen.

  18. Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Oh dear. I spent the last month thinking that Alicia Vikander was in the new Terminator movie, and how much she looked like Emilia Clarke in the trailer. Lol.

  19. phlyfiremama says:

    I LOVE the Khaleesi!!!

  20. Angelica says:

I loved her in the 1st season. Playing an innocent doll with an innocent doll-face really suited her and she pulled it off. I even liked her on the 4th season where she started pulling off her cocky attitude. All the other episodes have seemed forced, and I partially blame the writing. She’s my new Evangeline Lilly, barely acted before, thrust into a huge TV show, and picked apart for saying her lines and not being believable. I think she’ll do great. PS, I freaking love her body! Lovely balance of tone and flesh and I wish mine looked half as good. And she sounds so cool in interviews!
