Justin Theroux: ‘I’m not good at other things. I’m not a very bright man’

THR2

We haven’t covered The Emotive Eyebrow Known As Justin Theroux in a while. He’s been around, although not very visible since the Oscars. He was in Rome working on Zoolander 2, then he’s been in Texas (I think?) working on Season 2 of The Leftovers. And Justin got invited to The Hollywood Reporter’s annual pre-Emmy roundtable of lead actors, or interesting dramatic actors on TV or something. The other actors at the roundtable: Timothy Hutton, Jon Voight, David Oyelowo, Clive Owen and Bob Odenkirk. It doesn’t really seem like Justin fits in that group? Is The Leftovers considered a favorite for anything at the Emmys? Anyway, you can read the full piece here – the entire time, I was just waiting for Voight to say something about Angelina and then Justin would have to pretend to clean his nails or something. But that didn’t happen. Instead, it was a decent enough roundtable and it seemed like all of the actors respected each other and got along. Here are some highlights from Justin’s part:

Justin on the benefits of doing 10-episode seasons: “Thankfully, most of our shows here are 10 or 12 episodes, which is manageable. I did a network cop procedural once. The volume of work that we had to do for 24 episodes was crushing. You’re not loving the material, you’re showing up at 4 a.m. on a Monday, leaving at 4 a.m. on a Friday. You’re cycling through your bag of tricks so much that you fall into bad habits. The 10- to 12-episode season is [better]. The writers aren’t being forced to crank.”

Justin on seeing himself as a character actor: “It’s valuable for any actor to always think of himself as a character actor. The minute you start trying to assume a “leading man” or “leading woman” role, your sandbox starts to shrink and you start to get into the confines of a really strange space. We’ve all seen it happen — it creates this terrible gravity where the material starts to play to the actor’s comfort zone and eventually you’re painting inside the lines to maintain whatever perception or awards [pedigree] you’ve built up.

How he chooses projects: “It’s a gut thing for me. If it’s something comedic, I’ll check with my friends who also write. But I’ve definitely made mistakes when people say, “You should do this,” or “This is a great director. I know the part’s not what you want but you should do that.” I’ve rued many days on set where I’ve been like, “Why did I say yes to this?” I made a lot of mistakes as a younger actor, signing up for plays I’m stuck doing for six months. I’ve been in many sad situations. That cop procedural [made me want to] hang myself. My character said shit like, “Chief, you’re going to want to hear this!” You go, “Oh, I can’t.”

What he would do if he wasn’t an actor: “Probably keep writing. I’m not good at other things. I’m not a very bright man.”

[From THR]

I think full 22-26 episode network seasons are fine as long as the ensemble is strong enough and it’s not just one actor or actress doing the heavy lifting for every single episode. With The Leftovers, not only is it a 10-episode season, but Justin is surrounded by a very big ensemble, right? Anyway… there are some complaints about Justin’s inclusion in this roundtable, but he didn’t say anything too silly or embarrassing. I got the feeling that when he dropped his faux humility – “I’m not good at other things. I’m not a very bright man” – the other guys were like, “ugh, whatever.” And yes, Justin was always a character actor. It wasn’t until he got with Jennifer Aniston that suddenly we were supposed to buy him as a leading man.

Eh. Might be self deprication. Might be truth. Either way he’s boring and probably won’t ever be th next big thing

    • BangersandMash says:

Yeah well at least he’s not ‘vanilla’ like Brad.

      • Carmen says:

Why bring him into it? What’s your point?

      • Nicolette says:

Must be a mighty tasty vanilla, Angelina seems to enjoy it.

      • Bel says:

Brad is one of the biggest movie stars in the world, with millions of fans.
Justin is a no name star that very few people could name on the street.

        No comparison.

      • luna says:

i am sure she loves him and they are happy together forever and ever. but, the man is vanilla, wich is fine, not a big deal.

      • Maya says:

So someone who is award winning producer, 5 times Oscar nominee for acting , flies planes and drives motorbikes, owns a vineyard, designs furniture for 5 star hotels in Middle East and spends personal money and time on various humanitarian causes is vanilla, then I would like to know what you define the opposite of vanilla to be????

@Bel: yep comparing Justin with Brad just shows for plain, unaccomplished Justin really is.

      • Mispronounced Name Dropper says:

Hollywood stars are all vanilla when it comes down to it. We couldn’t have any of them inspiring serious dissent now could we? Rebellion is fine just as long as it’s harmless fashionable rebellion.

      • MrsBPitt says:

If Brad is vanilla, thats my new, favorite flavor!!!!!

      • jen2 says:

So if Mr. Pitt is Vanilla, is Mr. Aniston supposed to be Chocolate? Don’t think so. The only yummy chocolate in that photo is David O and he is delicious and all of the other folks are the vanillas, all of them.

      • KAI says:

        @Maya
Pitt has been nominated for an Oscar for acting three times, not five.

      • Esmom says:

Geez Maya, no need to be so defensive. Just because someone doesn’t love Brad more than anyone else doesn’t make them a hater. We all have different tastes. I personally love vanilla. 🙂

      • Josephine says:

Meh. I think Justin is pretty vanilla. His little costumes don’t change that fact. Jen and Justin are vanilla as it gets – nothing wrong with that. Just find it hilarious that you think Justin is less vanilla than Brad.

      • Tarsha says:

If Vanilla means not being a skeezy hipster douche, give me vanilla. Any day, every day, any way and every way.

      • Booopyybetttes says:

Yup. He’s aa sad desperate balding short no name poseur douche, Mr Annistonasskiss is – and because he contracted with boring tv hack queen of ‘vanilla’ jennifer aniston (and her behemoth PR agency CAA )/at the age of 45 to be her savior from womanscorned-dom (quid pro quo), he’s now got a failing cable TV show.

But everyone knows he’s there because he’s pay to play.

Including haters like ‘bangersandmash,’ who think if they call, ‘Brad Pitt,’ guys guy who makes kick azz critically acclaimed films, lives a truly unconventional honest eclectic existence and is the opposite of TheHEOUX’s vanilla poseur douche-ness….not to mention Pitt’s racked up more awards than ted bundeoux could ever dream of in his next 3 lives, even if they evolve into something better than starring opposite Alyssa milano in Mr and Mrs smith TV show ripoffs….that it will somehow make Justine LESS of a boring vanilla manscaped to the nth degree shake and baked balding shrimp….but it WON’T.

I’m sorry for you bangersandmash, that you’re so disappointed in Aniston’s no name contract player that you need to go back a decade and some change and attack brad pitt. Get over the rabid jealousy. Why not kick ‘Vince Vaughn the gun nut’ in the teeth for dumping Maniston for a college co-ed and running away to england only to marry and have kids with some Angie lookalike 2 years after he dumped Rachel green?? Why not bash john mayer for dumping Maniston live in a TMZ interview.

You’ve got to attack the biggest superstar admired worldwide, and in his industry – just because you’re still disappointed and raging that fuggiston is still single, childless and ‘together’ (except, not) with some no-name who is still pretentiously trying to make a name for himself and act above his tabloid TV sitcom famehoing fake fiance, when everyone knows he’s only got the little bit of shine he does because his presence ensures brad Pitt’s reject isnt seen as an aging bitter cat lady to her still enabling aging team aniston cows. Hahaha.

      • norah says:

who is even talking abt brad ? brad pitt is not a tv actor he has much bigger roles to worry about – seriously just concentrate on justin

    • Booopyybetttes says:

      Yup

  2. Crumpet says:

I thought it was a good interview. He’s brighter than I’ve given him credit for.

    • Esmom says:

I’ve always thought he was pretty bright, but there’s something about his demeanor that I find a little exhausting. It’s like he’s always “on.” A bit too intense.

  3. teatimeiscoming says:

    ….at least he knows it.

  4. Kiddo says:

“We haven’t covered The Emotive Eyebrow”….I love you Kaiser, that is all.

PS: I really like the jump photo.

  5. BangersandMash says:

In other news Clive Owen… rawwwwr!!

Oh Voight, why couldn’t you drop a juicy Angie story in the middle of that roundtable???
Uuuuggh, you have one job…. ONE JOB!!!!
    I can’t… I just…. can’t
    🙁

  6. polonoscopy says:

He’s boring and the Leftovers is extremely pretentious without much substance. That said, we should all date Jennifer Aniston – it seems like a great career move.

  7. kiz says:

I love Justin, Leftovers is one of my fav shows very mysterious and interesting i dont get why more people dont love that show

    • Jenns says:

I also enjoy the show. And I think Justin is very good on it.

    • tracking says:

It’s pretty consistently grim, so I can see why it’s not to everyone’s taste. Very strong cast though, including Theroux. While technically the lead, it’s really more of a character part–I can see why it appealed to him.

    • Tulip Garden says:

I agree that he is very good in the Leftovers. It was so grim that I took a break but I may go back for a binge watch later (which I prefer anyway).
I really enjoy Justin in interviews. Funny , intelligent, and quick-witted.

    • lucy2 says:

I have some fondness for him from Parks & Rec, but haven’t tried Leftovers yet. I just keep hearing it’s so bleak and depressing, I have to be in the right mood to watch something like that.

      • tracking says:

It is incredibly bleak and depressing, and you definitely have to be in the right frame of mind for it, but it’s very good. Slow burn at first, but really worth it in the end. Wonderful cast across the board, with Carrie Coons, Ann Dowd, and Christopher Eccleston the standouts.

  8. EmmyGrant says:

He looks really tasty in the main photo. I’m usually unimpressed with him, but my hat’s off to this photographer.

  9. jen2 says:

I want to hear from David O. He is always so great and he just won an Award last week for Nightingale. Hopefully an Emmy will follow.

  10. Jessica says:

I think he deserves a spot at the table. The Leftovers was much more talked about than Voight, Hutton and Owen’s shows (but everyone should watch The Knick btw), and he put in a pretty great performance. I’m struggling to think of a lead actor who should have taken his place. I don’t think Spacey would show up for this and McConaughey and Harrelson would have had to have done it last year right? Aden Young (Rectify), Matthew Rhys (The Americans) and Jeffrey Tambor (Transparent) are all amazing on fantastic shows, but for some reason those shows don’t get a lot of buzz.

I’m not quite sure why Voight is there though. Last time I checked in with Ray Donovan it was as breathtakingly mediocre as ever, and while’s Voight’s increasing hamminess is somewhat entertaining in small doses, it’s not exactly good acting.

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Is it really? I heard it was good, but it didn’t seem like it got much traction.

      • Dee Kay says:

Ray Donovan is a terrible show full of good-to-great performances. The quality of the actors (and Voigt really brings it) makes me long for better writers, the writing is completely cringeworthy. It’s like if you subtract all the wit, cleverness, emotional honesty and intelligence from The Sopranos, what you’re left with is Ray Donovan. (I watched both seasons at a friend’s urging. Ugh.)

    • lucy2 says:

I watched a few episodes of Ray Donovan, and HATED it. Couldn’t get into it at all, and I was looking forward to it when it first started up. Voight was good in his role, but I don’t enjoy watching him and his character was icky.

Matthew Rhys would have been excellent, he is super impressive on the Americans, and Aden Young too (his show is so beautifully sad). I haven’t seen Transparent, but Tambor is always entertaining.

  11. mia girl says:

While there is a strong cast around him (Carrie Coon is my fav) he is most definitely the lead in the Leftovers.

I thought the “Emotive Eyebrow” was good at the roundtable and enjoyed everyone’s contributions to the piece.

I like what he responded to Voight when he was asked about whether his conservative politics have affected him getting work in Hollywood. He said to Voight “Our politics are probably different but I hope we are not in a place where people aren’t getting hired for expressing their opinion.”

    • Tulip Garden says:

I read the full piece and really enjoyed how everyone interacted. They all seemed serious while still enjoying a laugh. I did especially like what Justin said to Voight about wanting everyone to have the right to express themselves despite the fact that, as he hinted, he wouldn’t personally agree with Voight’s politics.

  12. GPSB says:

    “Emotive Eyebrow.” Perfection!

  13. Bel says:

Wonder if he realizes he would not be on this thing if is he was not dating America’s #1 scorned woman?

Aniston can’t even bother going to Texas with him, instead staying in LA still jobless.

    • Maya says:

Oh he knows and that’s why he cheated on his longterm partner to be with Jennifer.

Jennifer is the equivalent of George Clooney – she is only in relationships (since divorce) for publicity sake and for showing people that see – I can get a man…

    • GPSB says:

Ah, Aniston Derangement Syndrome is alive and well.

    • FingerBinger says:

Jobless? You make it sound like Jennifer Aniston is a hobo.

      • Bel says:

Well in Hollywood she is not the one at the top of the list for roles. She is not the one getting the big sought after roles. Based on the Sony leaked emails she is not sought after at all. Only mentioned because Adam Sandler brought her up! Long lists of actresses for roles & no mention of her at all.

So her current status is not looking too good in Hollywood.

Cake could not even make 2 million after the TON of publicity she did. Her next film is coming out on Video on Demand/theater release.

      • Carmen says:

Her next movie, which is being released in theaters and VOD simultaneously, was actually completed three years ago and has sat on the shelf ever since. She has no other films in progress. That they are releasing a three year old movie at this time speaks volumes. Her career is in free fall. She will probably end up back where she started, doing sitcoms on TV.

  14. Caz says:

He is smart at two things…hasnt married Aniston and is still milking that relationship for all he can.

  15. Maya Memsaab says:

Meh. Who cares about him? I wish there was a story about Odenkirk! Better Call Saul season 1 was SO good..

  16. vauvert says:

Just here to say Clive and Timothy are still my jam. Emo Eyebrow guy liner guy, blah. And really, if you are on a cop show every line you utter has to out of Shakespeare? God is he conceited. Most actors would be pleased to be get a steady 24 episode solid show.

  17. Maya says:

Justin is definitely better at giving interviews and to formulate intelligent sentences that Jennifer.

And please this man destroyed any humility he ever had when he got together with the tabloid queen.

I personally find it weird that Jennifer is jobless and has been for more than a year and still cannot go to Texas to visit her man nor take the time to get married.

This relationship is going parallel to the way Jennifer’s marriage went with Brad. Jennifer passively aggressive commentating on Justin, Justin being away for shooting for months while Jennifer is no where to be seen, jennifer constantly denying pregnancy & split rumours etc. this couple seems to be over and just waiting for the opportune moment to announce the breakup ( I bet it will happen in November)…

    • pk says:

And Texas is awesome! Spend a few nights in Austin in March and hated to leave.

    • Tarsha says:

Lol, anyone is better at giving interviews than Aniston. She has a brain full of cotton. Heck, Sarah Palin is an acclaimed orator, next to Aniston.

  18. Cindy says:

    “emotive eyebrow” lol.
When I first saw the heading photo I thought it was Zac efron.

  19. kb says:

they’ve been filming here in lockhart, which is about 25 minutes south of Austin. probably in other areas around here, too, but they’ve been here for awhile in downtown and it’s slightly annoying. haven’t seen any of the actors and know nothing about the show, but keep seeing “miracle” props and tons of miracle buses that are bright green and blue forest ranger cars.

  20. Jen43 says:

I don’t like the faux humility. He is an intelligent guy and he knows it.

    • MrsBPitt says:

Not intelligent? More like. smartest man on the planet! Never heard of him until he dumped his long term girlfriend and got with Anniston! As someone said above…best career move ever!!!!

    • Tarsha says:

Really? I’ve yet to see any sign of intelligence from him.

  21. sofia says:

Clive Owen! That’s all I have to say!

  22. Desertrose says:

I’ve been a fan of His since Six Feet Under.

  23. Catelina says:

I mean, he obviously doesn’t really believe that he’s not smart. Everyone in Hollywood has a healthy ego. Everyone. It’s pretty much necessary to make it. I don’t hate Justin though. I hear he’s good on the Leftovers. Rooting for Odenkirk to take the Emmy (and Tambor the comedy Emmy)

    • tracking says:

Pretty sure he was just joking. I need to check out Odenkirk and, yes, Tambor is wonderful!

    • lucy2 says:

I’m probably going to root for Odenkirk too, though I’d love to see Timothy Olyphant come out of nowhere and get recognized for the last season of Justified.
Chances are it’s going to Odenkirk or Jon Hamm though.

    • Esmom says:

I hope Odenkirk wins. He blew me away with the amount of humanity he brought to a character that originally was created for comic relief.

      • Tara says:

Me too! But what a tough choice: olyphant, Owen and odenkirk. It’s an embarrassment of riches.

  24. MrsBPitt says:

I do think it’s hilarious that they put Theroux and Voight on the same round table! You know how crazy Voight is, I’m surprised he didn’t say to Theroux “Now, let me see, wasn’t my son-in-law, once married to your fiance?” That would have been awesome!!!! lol

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Lol, Jon wants to see his grandkids–I think James Haven has a kid (but this might be my imagination), a toddler?, but by and large….most of the grandkids come from Brad/Angelina. I think he’s learned his lesson, mostly, about keeping his mouth shut in regards to them or tabloid drama/gossip.

Although I did kind of “aww” when he said he’d be a babysitter for the rest of his life. He’s probably a lot like my mom’s dad–who was the world’s shittiest father, but bent over backwards for his grandkids.

  25. Izzy says:

“I’m not a very bright man.”

Well then, he and Jennifer are a match made in emotive eyebrowed, glossy-haired airhead heaven, aren’t they?

  26. RobN says:

I’m going with the left side of the photo because they have the good grace to go a little grey. Way too much Loreal on the right half. Seriously, Clive, you’re starting to look like my purple haired grandma.

  27. Justin has had some work done, fillers to soften the face. He got a new suit, but its way too tight, however as Jennifer gushed…he thinks thoughts.

  28. Sorella says:

Hmmm…some of these comments are intersting considering Jennifer was 10 years on a long running show… like this one …..”You’re not loving the material, you’re showing up at 4 a.m. on a Monday, leaving at 4 a.m. on a Friday. You’re cycling through your bag of tricks so much that you fall into bad habits”

AND this seems SO about Jennifer playing Rachel over and over….

“It’s valuable for any actor to always think of himself as a character actor. The minute you start trying to assume a “leading man” or “leading woman” role, your sandbox starts to shrink and you start to get into the confines of a really strange space. We’ve all seen it happen — it creates this terrible gravity where the material starts to play to the actor’s comfort zone and eventually you’re painting inside the lines to maintain whatever perception or awards [pedigree] you’ve built up”.

    • lisa2 says:

If he was not with her one could call this shading. But he has been known to do that to others in the past. Talk about actors giving too much away or being on TV shows. His fiancee got her leap from a weekly TV show. But he is saying what many have criticised Ansiton about. Playing a character too long that you can’t let their mannerisms go. That it seems you are always that character in varying degrees. I think that happens many people on TV. Which is why I believe it is harder for a TV Actor/Actress to break out big in movies than it is for someone who does mostly movies. It seem those actors/actress have an easier time going to TV and being successful. They are not carrying a established character with them.

      • Tarsha says:

Definitely it would be called shading. Both Justin and Aniston are passive-aggressive nasty people who make a habit of shading others.

    • Beezers says:

Working on a 1/2 hour comedy show and a 1 hour drama are completely different. The 1 hour drama show is very rigorous if you are the star or one of the stars of the show.

As for playing Rachel all these years, Maybe she was basically playing Jennifer for the 10 years of that show. She’s not a very accomplished actress, as she has proven in the years since then.

    • Tara says:

My thoughts exactly. I was wondering if he had Anniston in mind when he was describing the career he didn’t want.

      • Sorella says:

I don’t think he was shading Jennifer behind her back. I myself get the feeling that she probably knows what he thinks because JT likely told her (often probably) what he thinks of TV acting (because he has mentioned his disdain a few times). Think why JA tried to branch out to raunchy and 1 ugly role (Cake) since she’s been with him, maybe to show him she is NOT what he is assuming, trying to be seen not as Rachel (she should have done that lonnnng time ago though when she first started in movies). JT probably talks down to her about her being TV stereotyped, considering she has ALL THE $ in that relationship, (the houses, ect. all due to her mega-millions) this may be his way to “Lord” it over her “yeah, you made lotsa $ but nobody takes you seriously – whereas I’m a WRITER and get respect”. This dude is a Leo (my sister’s ex was one) and some of them love to “talk down” (being Lion, king of the jungle…they like to lead).

  29. namers says:

I hate to hear him describe The District that way because I was a fan, and I don’t think he was on for its duration. The 10 week format is really annoying actually as it’s over too soon and ends somewhat abruptly. JMHO.

  30. norah says:

no wonder david o was looking irritated

  31. naturegirl says:

One air or….. (MY HAIR) head plus one air head makes two what???

  32. BlackBetty says:

I still can’t believe this guy is related to journalist, Louis Theroux

  33. Tough Cookie says:

“The volume of work that we had to do for 24 episodes was crushing…”

    Seriously.
    ROFL….. I can’t stop rolling my eyes at that…
