Sean Avery & Hilary Rhoda cover Hamptons: are you buying what they’re selling?

avery1

I feel like I’m hallucinating. Did you guys know that Sean Avery (former NY Ranger, now retired from hockey) is engaged to Hilary Rhoda? I feel like I heard that a while back and I dismissed it because I really and truly believed Avery was and is a gay man. I wasn’t hallucinating about that – there were widespread reports back in 2013 (especially) that Avery was gay, engaged to a man and about to come out publicly. The specificity of those rumors and stories led me to believe that sure, he was probably gay and good for him. But I guess he’s not? And he’s engaged to a human woman, model Hilary Rhoda. And they posed for Hamptons magazine cover editorial and story that is so awkward, even Tom Cruise is cringing in his lifts. The reason for their Hamptons cover? Their wedding will be in the Hamptons. Some highlights from the interview:

Avery on being called an “attractive couple”: “That means we’re going to have ugly babies. We’re cursed.”

Rhoda on whether they want babies: “Yes, of course.”

Rhoda on their wedding plans: “We’re just getting it together now after a year and a half of being engaged. We’re just starting to meet with wedding planners and figure out where we’re going to do it, but we’re aiming for the fall. We are getting married in the Hamptons.”

Avery is a groomzilla? “At this point, I don’t necessarily think we need a wedding planner. I could set this wedding up in the next couple of weeks, and everything would run smoothly. I have it conceptualized in my head, and we’ve discussed what we want to do. We’re going to have an amazing weekend—all of our friends are going to be here, and no matter what happens, it’s going to be fun and beautiful.

Rhoda on fitness: “When we started dating, he was taking me to SoulCycle, and I started to work out a lot more because he’s a professional athlete; he has to do that for his job, so I got into that mentality about my job, too. We both work out every single day.

[From Hamptons Magazine]

There’s a lot of couple-stuff in the piece too and for what it’s worth, they do seem to have a pretty strong partnership. Like, their lives are already pretty blended together and they seem to finish each other’s thoughts. There’s also some interesting stuff about how they’re in the house-flipping business now – they’re buying mid-range Hamptons houses and fixing them up and selling them for a profit. They aren’t doing mega-mansions or McMansions though, which is nice.

I thought he was with Andy Cohen

    • Esmom says:

I thought he was one of my local newscasters and I thought I was hallucinating. 🙂

    • Louise177 says:

They are friends which is partly why people think he’s gay. Andy has denied that they were ever in a relationship though. I would think he would tell people that before saying he was with Lance Bass.

    • delphi says:

I’d hope Andy has better sense than that!

Sean, Sean, Sean. Oh, seeing you again takes me back to American Hockey League games of 1999/2000. And you throwing an audible temper tantrum over your locker stall being too close to a heat vent and the air was “drying out my fu***ng lungs”.

I don’t know why you were complaining, since you either sat on the bench or served other guys’ penalties. Such a self-important douche canoe.

  2. Samtha says:

Perhaps he’s bisexual. It’s disturbing that people so easily dismiss or ignore bisexuality as if it’s not even a possibility.

    • jinni says:

They do this especially to men. Not that they take female bisexuality seriously, but at least no one denies that it exist.

    • Tristan says:

Or perhaps they have a very convenient understanding. She is stunning & any gay man, myself included, would absolutely love to dress her up & play at Happy Families. It sounds like he has already done just that!

      • NYer says:

I hope you’re joking, because otherwise that sounds really creepy.

      • Lesley says:

That’s hilarious! As a straight woman, I would like to do the same with her! And we are largely kidding (sorta) for all you righteous folks out there…..

    • MeloMelo says:

      Yes, this.

I don’t know a thing about this man but why is it so difficult to think that maybe he’s bi?

    • Luca76 says:

Dan Savage has a great explanation of why people unfairly doubt male bisexuality.
Basically it’s because so many closeted gay men (including Savage himself and Elton John ) lie about their bisexuality as a first step out of the closet so people assume when a man comes out as bisexual he’s really just gay.

      • smcollins says:

That makes me think of a line from Sex and the City, where Miranda says that bisexuality for men is just a layover to Ricky Martinville. Lol 😉

FYI: that’s not my personal opinion, I just think it’s a funny line. 🙂

    • mystified says:

To me, it seems that he only has eyes for himself.

  3. LadyMTL says:

I seriously started laughing when I saw the cover. Sean Avery’s pose looks so contrived (let me just lean against this patio door frame, holding my teeny tiny dog, and stand at an angle that makes my legs look ridiculously short) and he also looks eerily plastic in the 2nd pic, like someone went nuts with the PhotoShop and erased every single line on his face. 😛

    • Esmom says:

I couldn’t figure out what looked so odd about his face, I was thinking maybe the eyebrows. They seem oddly sparse for his coloring, or maybe bleached.

      • mimif says:

Totally his eyebrows, they (or lack thereof) lend to a rather alien appearance.

      • Bridget says:

Its because its so weirdly smooth. He looks like he’s been groomed and botoxed to the hilt.

      • mimif says:

Now I’m obsessed with switching their eyebrows with photoshop. Abot where are you?! I need your skillz.

      • mystified says:

The eyebrows and the curiously colorless lips contribute to his insolent toddler expression.

      • Bridget says:

Sean Avery, who has clearly ended up with the face he deserves.

By the way @mimif, I’m all caught up on GoT!

      • mimif says:

@Bridget, yay! And just in the nick of time too. I didn’t check in on the comments yesterday (I was on overload), but any thoughts on last week’s ep? I personally thought it was awful. Boo hoo. Actually, I want thoughts in general.
(Sorry for going OT on pretty people in the Hampton’s post.)

      • Bridget says:

Hardhome was pretty awesome. I cant wait for more Others. And I love Dany and Tyrion together. It’s exactly what I hoped for (thank the lord of light).

    • QQ says:

YES LADY and ESMOM and MYSTIFIED I couldn’t figure out why he looks so absolutely OFF It’s Unnerving

…Much In the way I stopped even clicking in Cucumberpatch Posts, I Look At his Face in pics Like Find the Messed up parts Puzzle Games

Re: That Engagement and the fact I was sure he came out already myself WELL… THAT WAS AWKWARD

    • whipmyhair says:

I love that someone looked at that photo and thought “yes, this one’s it. This will make a great cover.”

Makes me want to see the ones they discarded.

  4. Jegede says:

    Hillary Rhoda is so beautiful,

Like a glacial and athletic Elizabeth Taylor redux.

    • Betsy says:

      +1
When did she lose so much weight? I remember her looking a little larger up until a few years ago. Her appearance is quite changed.

      • Hally says:

When Hilary first started modeling she was gorgeous, she had so much potential as a model and as a healthy role model since she wasn’t just stick thin. Then she went and lost a bunch of weight, and you can really see her face hasn’t been the same since.

    • Grace says:

She was one of my favorite models when I had favorites. She and Avery make a cute couple but I do agree that he looks like a plastic ken doll/bulldog in some of these Hampton pics

  5. rentho123 says:

he has more chemistry w/the dog he is holding in the first picture, then he does holding his fiance’s leg in the 2nd picture….congratulations i guess.

  6. Talie says:

I still believe the gossip that he was with Andy. He used to be on WWHL all the time (the worst guest, btw) and all over Andy’s Insta. Now, not so much…

    • Jayna says:

A gay athlete in the closet would be in the closet, not proudly being friends with a gay man publicly if he was involved with him. Here’s a thought. He’s not homophobic nor worried about his image and actually considers Andy a good friend..

      • Talie says:

Seems weird their “friendship” dried up as soon as the news broke. Clearly one of them didn’t like it.

      • Helen says:

Avery is actually one of the most outspoken athlete’s about LGBT equality.

Just an asshole about everything else.

  7. NewWester says:

” Tom Cruise is cringing in his lifts” that just made me laugh so much!

  8. Esmom says:

I was going to say they look really disconnected on the cover but that inside shot with him holding her leg is kinda hot. The one on the stairs cracks me up, he looks pants-less.

No idea about his sexuality. I do know a couple (man and woman) who each sent my gaydar off the charts when I met them…and they just celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary. You just can never really know what goes on in a marriage.

    • FLORC says:

      Esmom
Making a marriage work doesn’t have to include keeping the spark or attraction alive for eachother.
Really shocking to me to find this out. My neighbors are 40+years together. Affectionate and cute together. Their secret is they go elsewhere for “company” and return to eachother for companionship and sharing their lives.
      You just never know.

And this couple reminds me of them.

  9. Jayna says:

Sean Avery dated Elisha Cuthbert (Happy Endings).

Andy Cohen has said they have never been together and Sean is straight, but that they are great friends. It’s kind of a shame, really. Here, a professional athlete is not afraid to be great friends with a gay man and doesn’t hide that fact, but then the rumors start because he hangs out with Andy sometimes.

    Andy Cohen on the rumors:

“But Cohen blew off the allegations — explaining, “Sean Avery is STRAIGHT. Do you understand that? So a gay guy and a straight guy should be able to be friends.”

    • FLORC says:

      Jayna
There’s a history of those in the public eye that had many claim they’re straight or directly counter rumors. As time went on we found out otherwise. And those who were in straight relationships having not felt safe or having actually loved their partner.
I think this is the case here. Time will tell. And I don’t trust Andy Cohen At All. He’s proven himself a very good and comfortable liar.

      • OhDear says:

And I wouldn’t be surprised if pro athletes got into PR relationships, too, to dispel gay rumors (see Tebow and Camilla Belle).

        Don’t know about Avery, though.

      • FLORC says:

I believe Tebow and Camilla was PR for his virginal image and nothing more.
He gets around with ladies. A lot of them. It’s been an open secret a little under a year after his fame peaked.
Camilla had a virginal image as well. It was calculated for sure.

    • dreben says:

Not only did he date Elisha Cuthbert, but there was some whole issue where he got really insulting towards her in a very public way. If I remember correctly, his team wound up suspending him for a period of time over it. He seemed to have a string of pretty nice looking women that he dated so I never thought of him as gay. I didn’t think of him as being very nice though.

      • iheartjacksparrow says:

The suspension was a travesty as it happened off-ice. After she and Sean broke up, Elisha started dating NHLer Dion Phaneuf, and Sean made a comment to an interviewer along the lines of Dion liked his sloppy seconds. Sean’s suspension, for speaking words, was longer than players have received for inflicting career-ending injuries.

    • Bridget says:

Gay, straight, bi, questioning… one thing’s at least certain: Sean Avery is an a-hole.

    • littlestar says:

I was just coming here to say that. And he was a complete, disgusting *sshole to her after their breakup.

Gay or straight or bisexual, Sean Avery is NOT a nice man.

  10. Damn says:

So Jeremy Renner is definitely straight because he married a women and all the rumours about him being gay are invalid because of the marriage?

  11. GiGi says:

They are *very* active instagrammers and it looks like they live together and have a really tight, longterm relationship. I hate the speculation that because a man is friends with gay men, he must be gay, which is basically what happened with Avery. I think he’s very close with Andy Cohen, which started these rumors. And it really negatively feeds into that old “gay men want to sleep with everyone” notion and definitely does nothing to further gay rights. So boring.

    • Jayna says:

It is a shame a straight man can’t be friends with a gay man and enjoy each other’s company without labeling him as a closeted gay.

      • Bridget says:

The rumors about Avery being gay were around way before he and Andy Cohen were friends. It’s less “a gay guy and a straight guy can’t be friends” and more “Sean Avery is infamously a jerk and this would explain his obnoxious posturing if he was trying to keep himself in the closet”.

  12. Neelyo says:

What’s up with Avery’s face? Photoshop or Botox?

    • FLORC says:

That’s my question too… Little of both? This mag really goes overboard with the PS.

  13. Naddie says:

No idea who are these people. Both look and sound boring.

  14. Isa says:

Here I was thinking that it must be a slow news day but apparently everyone else knows who they are. I’ll go back to my corner now.

  15. Elizabeth says:

As soon as I saw that cover I got a gay vibe from Avery. His face looks like a botoxed wax figure! But that dog is TOO CUTE 🙂

    • OriginalTessa says:

A lot of hockey players have had extensive facial reconstruction. Almost all of them lose their teeth, and depending on the player, it’s not unheard of to have nose breaks in the double digits. Jaws, cheek bones… No player in the NHL by the time of retirement has the face they were born with.

      • Ange says:

Even my father and brothers who played football most of their lives have had to have quite a bit of facial reconstruction work. Noses, cheekbones, teeth etc.

  16. OhDear says:

It seems like he would have less reason to stay closeted since he retired from hockey and isn’t involved in the sport much (as a commentator or coach, etc.)? What is he doing now, besides house-flipping and getting married?

He seems like an obnoxious diva, though.

  17. Shambles says:

They look like reptilian humanoids. All of these photos have bought property in the uncanny valley, and I might have nightmares.

  18. CatJ says:

He was suspended for his “sloppy seconds comment regarding Cuthbert. He’s a “mean” guy, and I think has a nasty personality. When he was being judged on DWTS, I thought he was going
to have a rage fit, he seemed so angry.
I question her judgement, with his reputation. UUugggg.

  19. joy says:

She’s giving me a young Lisa Marie Presley vibe here.

  20. Boston Green Eyes says:

He’s pulling a Calvin Klein – Hilary even kind of looks like Kelly Klein (back in the day). He probably wants to have his cake and eat it too: Have the hetero married with children lifestyle AND bonking men on the side.

For those of you who don’t know hockey: Sean was always into fighting and very close to being a dirty player. I went to a Bruins game a few years ago and Mister Instigator was all over the ice causing rifts.

It was a joy to watch!

    • FLORC says:

      Your Gravitar is amazing!
I agree with your comment, but that little Pug face is awesome.

    • iheartjacksparrow says:

The absolute two best moments of Sean’s career concern Martin Brodeur and the playoffs: when Sean stood facing Marty and waving his stick in Marty’s face (which resulted in the league, the very next day, instituting the Avery Rule that you can’t face a goaltender to block his vision); and when the Rangers won the series and Marty refused to shake Sean’s hand, unheard of in the hockey world.

    • belle de jour says:

Your Calvin Klein comparison – right down to the Hamptons! – is 100% correct.

    • ohheyyou says:

Sean Avery dated Kelly Klein too.

  21. The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Well this was a big: “Who and who?” for me but I did learn about some people I never knew existed. So there’s that…

    /Formely Amy

    • elle says:

      Me, too.

That leg picture has got to be the least sexy thing I’ve ever seen, which I think is hysterical. She’s a model! She should be able to fake sexy with anything.

  22. roxy750 says:

nice white, privileged, sheltered wealthy people that are completely out of touch with the real world is what I see.

  23. kri says:

Sexual orientation aside,Sean is quite insane.Another poster mentioned hockey player’s faces getting jacked up.That is more than true.A friend once described someone’s broken face like “A box of rice krispies”

  24. Mispronounced Name Dropper says:

I think the people throwing the word privilege around might be closet communists. No judgment. Just an observation.

  25. DottieDot says:

    Who? Cares.

  26. kitty-bye says:

No, Not a good vibe on the man. No Smile nor emotion in the photos?

  27. Caz says:

Surprisingly cold photos…the artcle makes both seem more human.

  28. beauxblue says:

the man interned at vogue and is a good friend of andy cohen. I think if he was gay he would say so, especially since he retired from hockey.
