Kanye West hates when people tell him he dresses ‘gay’

Every now and then Kayne West says something that I actually agree with, something that doesn’t reek of ego and doesn’t come in the form of an all-caps internet diatribe. Kayne gave an interview to Complex Magazine and he ended up speaking out on the “gay” label being applied to men who dress well.

Kayne says that he refuses to conform, and he bashes the “mundaneness” (which isn’t a word) of people who dress without creativity. Kayne says it has nothing to do with gay or straight, which I think means that he considers dressing well to be just as creative as, say, painting a portrait or writing a book.

Rapper Kayne West has hit out at claims that the way he dresses is ‘gay’. Though he’s often seen wearing outfits that are far from what’s considered ‘the norm’ as far as hip-hop style goes, he denied that his style is anything but the work of a creative mind.

The egocentric star, who is launching his own jeans label, let his feelings be known in an interview with US mag Complex.

He said: “I really think it’s because society tries to dictate the way a guy is supposed to dress and the way a guy is supposed to act, and I refuse to conform.”

“A lot of these dudes would never be accused of being gay just because they all look exactly alike. If people could just realize the amount of mundaneness and followers that lack creativity… I think people’s mentality is like, ‘Only gay people are that creative’.

“And it’s true there are a lot of gay people who are incredible creative minds, but there are straight people who are incredible creative minds — and there’s gay people who can’t dress or create at all, too.”

“Closed-minded gay people probably say they dress ‘straight.'”

With this statement and his stunning new girlfriend Amber Rose, I think Kayne has definitely set the record straight…

I totally agree with Kayne. I hate when I hear a guy tell another guy that he’s dressing “gay,” or when someone says that he doesn’t have to care about his clothes because he’s not “gay”. Other cultures and other countries put a premium on men dressing well and looking good. It seems so specifically American that so many straight men are worried that if they wear a nice suit or a jaunty scarf, they’ll be labeled as “gay.”

I totally love Kayne’s last statement too: “Closed-minded gay people probably say they dress ‘straight.’” He’s so right. Here’s another thing: when a supposedly “straight” guy is too preoccupied with not looking “gay,” a lot of us girls are just thinking one thing – “closet case.”

I got to the bit where it says ‘stunning girlfriend’ and I’m still searching the pics for her….is the really badly-dressed woman with half a dead animal over her shoulder blocking her from view perhaps?

While I agree re the dressing gay thing – so limiting and unimaginative – I don’t think Kanye has anything even remotely resembling style.

  2. Ron says:

We do not claim that as style.

KW, just because it’s expensive and you wear it, doesn’t mean you have any style whatsoever.

  3. Tia says:

Well let’s face it, gay people are know for dressing really well and having great sytle. It is like if you see a guy who is dressed so nice, great clothing, very clean and organized and great manners he is gay. What does that say for straight men, who are perceived as sloppy, poor dressing, bad hygenie, and acting like pigs basically.. thinking it is a compliment for someone to say Kanye dresses like he is gay.. it is saying he is IN STYLE and well put together. I see his point though all men should be dressing like this not just gay people..

  4. binks says:

He should give some styling pointers to his girlfriend. The giant dead animal on her shoulder is vile. Her thighs look a lil chunky to be wearing a dress like that… Yikes!

  5. MsTriste says:

Yesterday my teenage daughters told me Kanye was gay and that Amber Rose is a tranny. Now I’m looking at that picture in a new way and to be honest, I think they might be right…

  6. Tony says:

Gay statement if I ever heard one. The boy is gay.

  7. rarahrarah says:

they should exchange their outfits with each other. She’d suit the suit better.

  8. Lawdog says:

Interesting how his “girlfriend” looks like a dude.

  9. Tia says:

MsTriste, way to instill kindness in your children.. thinking it is ok to call someone a tranny… wow, you must be a first class mother.. NOT

I personally would never say that Kanye dresses either ‘gay’ or ‘straight’. I would, on the other hand, suggest that he and his pre-op buddy there seem to have been leaping into the wayback machine and styling themselves circa 1985. If they keep it up, I am fairly certain that we will be seeing some Moon Boots, leg warmers, and goucho pants from this pair in the near future.

I actually think KW usually dresses very nicely. But not here. For the love of God, keep the tux jacket closed until you’re ready to sit down man!

And while I think “striking” is more accurate than “stunning”, I think the girlfriend looks nice here – and so cute in the photos of her smiling, almost like a different woman. Darker hair would suit her better though.

The black stole thing looks fake to me. And cheap. Her outfit would be fine if the dress was a bit longer and she had on a pashmina rather than the student-shag-pile rug.

Well if that isn’t an affront to gay people everywhere I don’t know what is. Honestly if Kanye represents what GAY fashion is then I say every queer in the USA should start wearing flannel in protest.

What no one thinks about is the way men dresses in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s! Even the working class was well dresses at that time1 Since the 80’s there are more people who don’t dress very well anymore, especially men! And sorry, I think Americans generally have a bad taste. That has nothing to do with the country, I love the USA. Maybe some professor can figure out what happened with the taste of the average American citizen since the 80’s! (That doesn’t mean that I think I dress that fabulous, but don’t denie that all the big fashion brands are from Europe).

  15. Because I Say So says:

Kanye’s not breaking any fashion territory, but he is outside the thuggish-rapper/hip hop model. So, in that respect, he may be considered fashion-forward for his peer group.

I’ve never thought Amber looked tranny. I don’t see it. I don’t think she’s beautiful or even that pretty, but she’s not mannish-looking. Are we looking at the same woman?

  16. voodoobetty says:

Yes Xander, the Dutch are the epitome of fashion and class.

  17. voodoobetty says:

    Where are my clogs dammit?!

  18. AppleGirl says:

I’d rather see black men dress gay than gangsta.

He looks sweet the way he dresses!!

  19. Armand says:

A bit off topic but a valid point with regards to ‘straight’ guys obsessed with not doing anything that would point the ‘gay finger’ at them.
There was a study done on ‘straight’ men in prison for violently killing gay people without any real motive. They hooked them up to a device that monitors blood flow in the penis which is what causes an erection.
They also hooked up straight men that didn’t have any issues with gay people and were not angry or concerned over whether someone was gay or not.
They showed both groups gay porn and other erotic images of men. They found that the extreme homophobes showed arousal and the second group did not.
If a man wears his hatred for gay people or even his disdain or irritation for them on his sleeve………it’s a gay red flag.

Show me a straight man that is comfortable around and not bothered by gay men and I will show you a real ‘straight’ man.

As humans we only have strong reactions to things that ‘touch a nerve’ and for those nerves to be touched, they must be there in the first place.

  20. Xander says:

Well voodoobetty. I wasn’t saying anything about class. And I understand ur sarcastic sentence. I know we are famous because of our brothels and legal drugs use. I don’t think we, the Dutch are classy at all. And I’m also not saying we dress the best of all Europe. I even think the porer the country the better they dress. And maybe I was a bit harsh about the Americans. It’s just a style. But people got to understand that looking good (or maybe a bit too sexy), is not a crime. For example I was suprised to see the Jonas Brothers dressed that well. But offcourse no-one says they are ga because they are conservative christians. Well whatever, let’s not make a fuss about someone’s opinion. respect everyone, let anyone B who he wants to B. Worldpeace ;-).
