Katherine Heigl now willing to compromise with Grey’s producers

Katherine Heigl
Even though it’s pretty clear to everyone that Katherine Heigl is desperate to leave Grey’s Anatomy to devote more time to her burgeoning film career, she still feels the need to pay lip-service to her “happiness” if she’s forced to fulfill her contract. Heigl claims that she’s totally in the dark about whether Izzy will be written out of the show, which is funny. That probably means the producers and the writers are just screwing with her, trying to make her life miserable.

Heigl talked about all of this and more to The New York Times at the celebration for the one-hundredth episode of Grey’s Anatomy. Heigl, who has pitched more than one public fit about the show’s writing and schedule, now says she’s “happy to compromise” with whatever the show’s producers and writers have planned for Izzy:

Katherine Heigl said Friday she’s ready to stay with ”Grey’s Anatomy” and the decision rests with the show. Attending a studio party to mark the ABC medical drama’s 100th episode, Heigl said it’s premature to think her days as Dr. Izzie Stevens are numbered.

”I was assuming that at one point and I got a lot of shrugged shoulders and shakes of the head, so I don’t know if that’s a yes or a no. No one will tell me and I don’t know how this is going to go,” Heigl said, noting series creator Shonda Rhimes passion for plot secrecy.

”I don’t know if I live or die. I don’t know how Izzie fares,” said the actress, who’s played the character since the show debuted in 2005.

”I’m there” if Izzie remains part of ”Grey’s Anatomy,” Heigl said. She called the set ”one of my favorite places to be” and said her colleagues are also friends.

She and fellow cast members, including Ellen Pompeo (Dr. Meredith Grey) and Patrick Dempsey (Dr. Derek Shepherd), were on hand for the celebration that included a cake decorated with scalpels and syringes made out of icing.

Rhimes, who’s also an executive producer for the show, called the milestone a ”huge accomplishment” and thanked the cast and crew for their efforts. In an interview, she dropped a tantalizing clue about the episode airing May 7.

”The only thing I’ll tell you about the 100th is that it takes place on Meredith and Derek’s wedding day,” Rhimes said. ”That’s big … and that’s all I’m going to say.”

On Thursday’s episode, Izzie was seen surviving brain surgery. There’s been speculation that Heigl wants to pursue her blossoming film career (”Knocked Up,” the upcoming ”The Ugly Truth”) full-time, and that her character might be killed off. Rhimes declined comment on what would happen to Heigl’s character.

Last month, fellow cast member James Pickens Jr. said Heigl was leaving the show, along with T.R. Knight, both of whom declined comment at the time. Knight missed the studio party because he’d previously scheduled the day off, an ABC spokeswoman said.

On Friday, Heigl said she’s comfortable balancing movies and TV by working on big-screen projects during the summer hiatus for ”Grey’s Anatomy.”

”I’m more than happy to make that compromise. As my agent likes to say, ‘High-class problems,”’ Heigl said.

”I don’t know if I want to continue for five years working 12 months a year, but I can take at least another year or two,” she said.

Dempsey said he intends to fulfill the remaining two years on his contract with ”Grey’s Anatomy and ”then we’ll see what happens after that.”

It will be interesting if T.R. Knight follows his “bestie” Katherine off the show – he doesn’t have the waiting film career she has, so staying on Grey’s might be his best choice.

Katherine Heigl and her “high-class problems” grate on my nerves. It’s not that she wants to leave a television show that put her on the map – lots of television actors get bored and want to leave, and that’s life. What bothers me is her repeated whines and public complaints, often at the expense of people who are making a lot less money than her (like, say, the writers). No one forced her to sign her contract – so why all the drama about fulfilling her contractual obligations?

What film career? I haven’t been able to stand her in anything she’s acted in. I used to like her, but all I can see now is her bitchy attitude. In fact, she’s one of the reasons I stopped watchin Grey’s Anatomy – her and the poor plot lines.

I think her ‘it’ girl moment has passed.

    Edit: *watching*

  3. Pufft says:

When she was a struggliong actress in Hollywood she was only too happy to get cast as Izzy on Grey’s Anatomy. Now that fame has gone to her head, she forgets the meaning of ‘appreciation’ and starts biting the hand that feeds her.

I’m so sick of all these ungreatful actresses. I hope her character gets killed off, that way we can watch her career hit rock bottom.

  4. Kerry says:

Maybe she just wants to get off the show because it sucks balls. This is not 2005 Greys Anatomy is no longer a good show. I would want off if I was her too.

  5. Kait says:

I know I’m in an unpopular minority but I think her “issues” with Grey’s have been blown out of proportion. Who doesn’t hate their jobs some days? And she has had some strange/ridiculous story lines. Who knows if she stays or not but I like her minus the smoking.

That is one fugly purse she has

I’m with Kait on this. In the past, Katherine’s words have entirely been blown out of proportion. At the time she withdrew from the Emmy race, she WAS getting completely idiotic storylines on Grey’s. Her reputation as some kind of stuck-up uber bitch is a total exaggeration. Plus, by now the show is back on track and the latest eps have been excellent (INCLUDING Katherine’s acting), and she seems nice enough in the interview above.

  8. Wow says:

I liked her in the begining but she surely has let her fame go to her head. And it has nothing to do with Grey’s having gone downhill.

Her attitude sucks. She now sucks and I wouldn’t be surprised if her whining and career choices goes the way of David Caruso. These type of actors always get a “wake up call” when they think they are bigger than the busines itself.

  9. Mme X says:

I liked her in the beginning. I agree that the show is nothing like it was the first season. The magic is gone. Spoiler warning: I read an interview (in EW, I think) in which Shonda Rhimes said there will be a wedding but it won’t be Meredith and Derek, so that helps us make sense of her comment above.

  10. Autumm Leaves says:

I have ZERO sympathy for a high paid actress complaining about her high paying job. Heigel deserves the backlash she’s getting. She’s reading the writing on the wall since her movie career has stalled, so now she wants to backtrack and stay on G.A. Please, spare me. She made her “death” bed, now lie in it. Same with T.R “never heard of him until G.A.” Knight.

  11. J-Lin says:

If I was Shonda Rhimes, I would only have two words for her: Bitch, please!

  12. the original kate says:

i watched this hideous show once (and it was an hour of my life i will never get back!) but i do remember she sucked. girfriend should take whatever acting job she can get, keep her mouth shut and be grateful she has a job at all.

  13. Hieronymus Grex says:

Good, maybe they’ll quit making her character out to be a complete ‘tard and give her a decent part again.

  14. L.S. says:

Is it just me or does Katherine Heigl look a little bit like Madonna aka “It” in that picture?
