Benedict Cumberbatch made a ‘surprise’ video appearance at Comic-Con

wenn22152011

I forgot that Steven Moffat was making an appearance at this year’s Comic-Con in San Diego. He was mostly there to talk about Doctor Who, but of course he also dropped some Sherlock stuff on all the loonies and nerdgasms were had by all. First of all, the first clip from the Sherlock Christmas special has been released. It’s sort of… meta. But enjoyable.

It’s interesting. I mean, I’m going to watch the crap out of it when it comes on (hopefully PBS will get it around Christmas too) but for now, it just seems mean. What else? Rupert Graves (Lestrade) and Sue Vertue (producer) chatted with IGN ahead of the panel – go here to see. And of course they got Andrew Scott, Mark Gatiss and Benedict Cumberbatch to do a little video. You think it’s just going to be Andrew, but Benedict pops up around the 1:45 mark.

I think Mark Gatiss’s chunky turtleneck is from J.Crew. I remember that style from like 1995. And Benedict and his damn denim shirts!! This bit was filmed a while ago. You can tell from Benedict’s haircut.

As for what Moffat said at the panel discussion, he told the crowd that he was so thrilled to see Martin Freeman and Benedict in the old Victorian costumes:

“The first few days we were just so excited because we saw our show with Benedict and Martin in the proper gear and his extraordinary sideburns and you think ‘why didn’t we always do this? Why did we make that silly mistake of updating it?’ But by the end we slightly missed the modern iteration so love all Sherlock Holmes. Maybe we’ll just alternate them all. Mark and I think we should do the 1940’s propaganda German version.”

As for Season 4, which isn’t even written much less filmed, Moffat says: “We’ve got a clear idea of what we’re going to do and it’s going to be a clear shift in tone. Yes, there’s going to be some dark stuff coming but there always is. There always fun and jokes and detection and all that nonsense.” He also said that the Christmas special will be shown in some theaters. Hm.

There always fun and jokes and detection and all that nonsense.

It sounds like the Fashion CSI crew!

    • Lilacflowers says:

This member of the Fashion CSI crew can’t come up with words to describe how boring the clothing in that video was so I’ll just mumble something, mumbling seems to be the theme in that video, something about my cat has nicer clothes lining her cat bed and run back to the Hiddleston thread to exclaim over matching one’s suit color to one’s eye color and how that accentuates one’s glorious cheekbones, even when wearing a silly hat for sun protection.

Looks fun! In theatres though? Think I’ll enjoy at home.

As an aside Doctor Who’s Peter Capaldi seems wonderful, absolutely wonderful. It’s nice that the kids in my life watch that show but I’d watch anyway!

  3. Kikuyu says:

Countdown to stans turning this into proof Sophie Hunter is a bitch or a gold digger or a werewolf or something.

  4. Original Cyn says:

I thought I was done with Sherlock after the first ep of season 3, but I might just watch this one.

I’m your landlady not your plot device is going to be my new tag line.

  5. Audrey says:

Is it Christmas yet? I can’t wait. I’m watching the old ones on Netflix

  6. Lindy79 says:

I love how his hair is like a time line for events.

  7. Moxie Remon says:

    But what’s Benedict’s baby’s name?

    • Timbuktu says:

Don’t they keep saying that it’ll get “darker” after every season? What is it about shows feeling like they have to go darker to evolve? Especially when they only have 3 episodes per season, I think they can sustain the same tone for quite a while without going stale.

    • Dara says:

@Moxie – Until word to the contrary, I’m going with William Timothy Frederick Cumberbatch for the Batchling. “WTF Cumberbatch” will be painstakingly embroidered on his future school uniforms. Sadly, I think both Cumby and the missus are un-hip enough not to realize those initials could be burdensome for a child to carry with them for life.

Would have gone in person, but has to get his hat back from Tom Hiddleston.

    • Lilacflowers says:

As bad as Tom’s sun hat is, it is still his own and nicer than that hideous I’ll-fitting blue thing.

  9. jammypants says:

Season 3 was terrible, but this looks to be a fun Christmas special.

    • Green Girl says:

My thoughts exactly. I can’t tell you how many times I thought “Ugh, this show” when I was watching season three, and it’s only got three episodes in it! But this video for the Christmas special is enough to lure me in, especially with the “Miss me?” at the end.

  10. Hudson Girl says:

His eyes look exhausted. He must be waking up with the baby. I bet it’s a cutie and I can’t wait to see a pic of it when they need to promote something. 😉

  11. Joanie says:

    That was damn cute.

  12. KishiMoon says:

YES. I DO MISS YOU . Love Andrew Scott/James Moriarty . Please bring him back to the show and very exited to see him in the new 007 movie.

Is Andrew really not in the new one? I has the sads. This outfit is losing steam, especially after fanfictastic Episode 3. Glad Andrew is getting cool opportunities. Gatiss is solid in his writing career. I really hope things end up well with Benedict. I think he’s talented and gorgeous. But he’s going through what looks like a rough patch. Only Hamlet and Dr. Strange confirmed now, right? And we know what the fandom is like. Whatever the case of his personal life, he’s the one who didn’t handle it well. A good part of his appeal was that he seemed fun and open with just a whiff of toff. He needed to keep that public image up whether it was real or not. Either the missus should have learned to play along or stayed out of the spotlight. That shouldn’t be hard when the light wasn’t trying to find you in the first place. I feel badly that he managed these changes in his life so poorly, career wise. Really hope he comes through. He deserves a long run. Looks like Hiddles just got started. Hardy too. Redmayne is going to be another Adrien Brody imo. Elba is really good looking, but Ejiofor & Oyelowo are where the real talent is at.

    • LooLoo says:

Oh, don’t be silly. He’s got very high profile or high status work lined up for like two years and was just granted both a CBE and was made a member of the Academy. His career is obviously doing fine. I’ve never seen or heard anything about people thinking there’s anything weird or dodgy about his marriage and the way it was “handled” PR-wise, or that his career/image are suffering, apart from the handful of butthurt super-stans on Tumblr and they’d react the exact same way to him being in any relationship, with anyone, under any circumstances.

Seems like his wife has done her best to stay out of the spotlight but understandably there’s always going to be a lot of press interest in the pregnant bride of a major celebrity, especially as they did manage to keep the relationship secret for so long. Of course the “Wannabe Mrs Magical Unicorn Dorkybatch” brigade seem to think that attending the odd event important to your husband significant events to support him, or actually leaving the house at all = outrageous famewhoring, so whatevs. Smh.

      • questionasked says:

Really? Hamlet, Dr. Strange and Sherlock were fixed before the Oscar-fail. The CBE was widely regarded as undeserved (not on tumblr, but in newspapers!) and an academy membership you receive automatically after a nomination. I don’t want to speculate about the reasons, but these are the facts.
