Katy Perry makes brilliant strategic tweets in the Nicki Minaj-Taylor Swift beef

wenn4067276

YES. Taylor Swift’s Bad Week continues. Looks like Swifty isn’t the only one capable of making some excellent strategic maneuvers to collect powerful and accomplished friends. On Tuesday night, Swift and Nicki Minaj got into it on Twitter – I have no desire to recap the whole sordid/funny/tragic mess, so go here to see yesterday’s post. Following the initial beef, Swifty looked like a tone-deaf a—hole and Minaj was still talking about racism in the music industry and how artists like Swift are applauded while artists that look like Minaj are demoted to “strictly urban markets/awards.” And guess who joined Minaj? Only Taylor Swift’s #1 Enemy, Katy Perry. This is so delicious!!! My only complaint is that Katy’s wording could be much better.

My Katy Perry-to-Kaiser translation: “It’s pretty ironic for Taylor Swift to use an argument of ‘women are being pitted against other women’ just as she capitalizes on the takedown of another woman.” Was Katy even referencing Nicki Minaj or was the “takedown of another woman” a reference to Katy? But Katy wasn’t even done:

I think Katy Perry might need a slow clap for this one. It’s not even about Rihanna’s video at this point. With two little tweets, Katy Perry stuck it to Taylor Swift on so many levels. First, the petty girl-drama level: Minaj “favorited” Perry’s first tweet, meaning Katy and Minaj are BFFs now. And you know Rihanna and Katy are even closer now – Rihanna has refused to take sides in the beef between Katy and Swift, but by using her platform to recognize Rihanna, you’ve gotta think that Katy just insured Rihanna’s future loyalty.

Even more than that – and I never thought I’d write these words – Katy has proven herself to be a much more thoughtful feminist ally to women like Minaj and Rihanna, and any artist, really. The curtain really came back on Taylor Swift’s version of “feminism” and I feel like there’s going to be a lot more shade thrown in Swifty’s direction in the future. Swifty believes that feminism is “no one can say mean things about me but I can pick catfights with other women” and she came across as especially tone-deaf in the Twitter beef. Well played, Katy.

Update: Taylor just tweeted this:

Ha, the world got Taylor Swift to back down and admit she made a mistake!!

Do they all share a publicist, or what?

    • PinaColada says:

Do you know what Katy’s 2nd tweet means? I follow none of them. Was Taylor’s video out past the close date for submission entries?

      • msw says:

She was calling TS a hypocrite (and had a decent point). I think the other tweet referred to Rhianna’s video.

      • Kate says:

She’s saying the biggest snub was Rihanna’s Bitch Better Have My Money video. I’d tend to agree. Love it or hate it that video was a hell of a lot more interesting and had far better production values than any of the nominee’s.

      • hadlyB says:

Bitch better have my money? What wonderful lyrics, who came up with that crap??

Nikis video didn’t deserve any awards .. all I saw was a huge butt in the whole video jiggling along 90’s music as she added some ” uh uh and a few words”

Yeah give her an award for that. She just wanted an award for her fat transferred butt.

This whole thing is a stupid rich girl fight that makes no sense, its all about their over inflated egos. And its not even good gossip. I’d rather hear who is Ben’s next ho than this.

      • Chic says:

hadlyB, you should give Nicki’s music a proper listen. Her lyrics are excellent and emotional on her non lead songs. I dont particularly like rap music but she really is something else.

      • Shoot–of the three videos: “Anaconda”, “Bad Blood”, and “Bitch Better Have My Money”…..”Bitch Better Have My Money” should’ve been nominated (or whatever) out of these three. Taylor’s video was TERRIBLE. Her singing/lyrics/voice suck…..Nicki’s video was OTT gross (just like Iggy and JLo’s “Booty” video and song, wtf?)……Riri’s?!?!?! AWESOME. Campy fun, and I am SO jealous she got that fine as hell Mads Mikkelsen to play as “the Bitch”.

Riri’s video was the most interesting, I loved the song (even though it’s ridic, but still)…….

    • M.A.F. says:

They probably do have a publicist but I doubt they listen to them yet alone use them that often. No need to hire someone when you can do it yourself for free via social media.

  2. Lindy79 says:

“no one can say mean things about me but I can pick catfights with other women”

Yep in a nutshell. She also goes straight into victim mode if anyone dares to make fun of her/criticise her.

    • MCraw says:

She’s too old to play the sweet innocent damsel in distress needing saving from her fans.

      Her next move is critical

      #TaylorWatch
      #TheEndOfInnocense
      #HashtagJustCuz

      • QQ says:

bwahahah YES McCraw This is also an Important basic Gossip Lesson, CHECK THE FAVES cause Minaj didnt even say Boo, all she did was Fave the tweet and if you see what she’s been faving is people Givin’ er to TS and EXCELLENT articles about her point being missed

TS Majorly takes the L here, anything she has to say now will be petty/irrelevant cause now the music fans and journos are talking about how Nicki is not lying and breaking down the VMA stats

      • Abbott says:

Totally with you, MCraw. I’m interested to see what Swift does next since her usual methods have been called out. I’d assume she’d try to publicly ‘friend squad’ Nicki but it seems like Nicki is not having that sh*t.

      • QQ says:

TAYLOR HAS APOLOGIZED! TS BACKED DOWN FOLKS!

      • Abbott says:

Can I still hate her though?

      • Lynnie says:

Damage Control that’s all that is. If she can find a song, music video, friend, boyfriend, etc to shade all of them she will

    • Denisemich says:

Taylor Swift seems like music’s Gwyneth Paltrow.

Does she have talent ? Yes.

Will we play her songs in 20 yrs? I don’t know.

But behind her is a path of destruction. Famous Boyfriend and Girlfriends that didn’t make her cut and were outed for it.

In this instance, I blame Kanye. If he never called attention to her, she may have faded 5 years ago.

      • Olenna says:

        Ha! “Thank ya, Yeezus!”

      • Neah23 says:

Does she have talent ? NO.

      • Kiki says:

Everyone is blaming Kanye for everything. While T.Swift is riding high with her pop songs, he is still putting out crap music and still thinks and crowns himself as a “Rock God”.

      • belle de jour says:

“Taylor Swift seems like music’s Gwyneth Paltrow.”

Now THAT is double the shade… especially since at one point, Goop tried hard to be ‘music’s Gwynwth Paltrow’ with Gwyneth Paltrow’s ‘music.’

    • Alex says:

      THIS exactly.
Taylor isn’t a feminist she still cries “victim” at every turn

      • npk says:

I agree but I would add that the article calling Katy a thoughtful feminist is a joke too. She Just wants to dog pileTaylor’s idiocy.

    • annaloo. says:

There’s a special place in hell for women who don’t support other women, Swifty!

    • Wentworth Miller says:

It’s that ‘deer in headlights’ look on her face that fools everyone

  3. Kristen says:

My favorite tweets in this whole situation were from Bruno Mars/Ed Sheeran 😂

  4. Loopy says:

Clap Clap for Katy I have been dying for Swifty’s childish mean girling antics to reach mainstream, she is immature and uses other females to act like some Queen B in high school.

    • Linn says:

Katy doesn’t really come across as a mature person either. Imho all three of them look equally stupid,

      • Loopy says:

Sure Katy is goofy and silly but she has not gone out of her way to get every female in the industry like some middle school nonsense.

      • itzblissy says:

argh.. katy is the oldest one out of them. If anything i lost any respect for her after this.. I actually liked her the most out of them three before this..

Katy, you are 30! please take the high road and leave the kiddies to be kiddies.

  5. tifzlan says:

A+ Katy. Can’t stand you in normal circumstances but you played this one veeeeery well.

  6. blue marie says:

Snort, reminds me of high school.. It’s the VMAs, in the grand scheme of things how much do these matter? Oh right, they don’t.. Meh, the tweet fight is entertaining but I still won’t watch,.

    • Kiddo says:

They all should have left Swift’s stupid tweet dangling in the cold breeze. This has a whiff of set-up. I still don’t care about the VMAs, however. The needle hasn’t moved on Swift, didn’t care for her before, still don’t.

      • Diana says:

All three of them sound like idiots. But I do believe Minaj had a point and it got lost somewhere when Taylor once again had to make things about herself.
That’s when it became high school bullcrap.

    • Shambles says:

That’s exactly what I was thinking, Blue Marie… I feel like I’m in 11th grade again. Ermagerd, SUBTWEETS. It’s a great discussion to have in the grand scheme of things, but a Twitter beef over the VMAs…? Come on now. This is Tellytubby level sh!t

That said, I’m always happy to see Taylor Swift called out on her utter crap in any public forum.

      • Bridget says:

It’s a tad exhausting. Bad sign if you have to synposize using phrases like “and then she tweeted back at her”

    • BengalCat2000 says:

It’s worse than high school… All three are acting like brats, imo. I don’t get why the VMA’s are still a thing. MTV is as bad as E!

    • Kitten says:

Yeah, I’m losing brain cells reading about three idiots. I’m out!

      • Absolutely says:

        All this! ^

      • LilyaMuz says:

Why is Nicki Minaj and idiot when the point she is making is valid, timely, and sadly true? Have you ever heard her actually speak, or listened to her less mainstream songs? She’s a clever, talented, flawed, and opinionated human being much smarter than many of her pop superstar peers. Yet the treatment she gets in the press and the limited opinions many have of her basically seeing her as nothing more than a Crazy Angry Black Whore reaally proves some of things she’s been saying..Azelea Banks gets a similar treatment. Meanwhile, other famous white women get to make many many mistakes, experiment with their image, and when they get upset or passionate they are lauded. ALL women should be able to speak up for themselves and their struggles, their beliefs and their frustrations. I’m so over people calling Minaj and Banks idiots. Idiots they are not. Frustrated complex humans, more like. Who wouldn’t be frustrated if put in their position of being constantly marginalized and seeing women similar to them being treated as props, their culture celebrated mostly when used by a white woman and seen as bizarre or tacky on themselves. And the argument is always made that black women should basically just shut up and be content with the recognition they receive. Because, I mean, Beyonce is successful right? This conversation is so important because it basically an extension of the struggle WOMEN face, where they are often seen as objects, their opinions invalidated because of their gender, how our way of dress and appearance is more scrutinized. Well, a black woman not only has to deal with that but also with other women telling her that she’s an idiot for getting upset about her own particular experience

      • Kitten says:

I’m not sure why you’re coming at me, especially because my comment was a fairly innocuous one, compared to the other ones on this thread….
But if you must know, I’ve defended Banks AND Minaj many times around here. I used to listen to Minaj in her Sucka Free days so please don’t tell me about how talented she is.

Maybe “idiot” isn’t the most accurate term. But it’s worth pointing out that Minaj’s messages are often lost in the context in which she choses to fight her battle. For instance, over a meaningless f*cking MTV award, through a twitter war, with other famous female artists. That’s really the perfect way to trivialize an important issue.

Since you brought her up, Banks is someone who I consider incredibly intelligent and in my opinion, far more interesting and more talented than Minaj. But Banks gets in her own way too much. It sucks to watch because she makes so many great points, but her delivery needs work if she wants people to listen. The thing about Banks is, I don’t think she’s really trying to change minds. I don’t think she really gives two f*cks. Truthfully, the fact that she is so unapologetic is part of what makes me like her so much.

So yeah, if you’re replying to me to complain that I’m not getting the message or whatever, please stop. I get the message that Nicki’s putting out there and I agree with her, but she shoots herself in the foot by bringing other artists into the fray to make her point. At the end of the day, she’s just giving Swift, Cyrus et al more attention and publicity. It all comes across as incredibly juvenile and silly, like teenagers getting in a fight on social media.

      • Jay says:

@LilyMuz… I’ve listened to Nicki’s stuff and I think it’s garbage (and I’m a fan of rap). So the whole “clever and talented” thing is highly debatabe; many people don’t liker trashy lyrics. No one here implied Nicki is a “crazy angry black whore.” They called her an idiot, which is also debatable.

Banks is an idiot plain and simple though. Anyone who makes gross prejudiced comments like she has = moronic.

I also don’t get your props comment… all women in this industry are marginalized and treated as props. Nicki in particular objectifies herself with her gross implants and desperate need to shove her ass in your face.

Not saying this isn’t a real issue AT ALL, but Nicki and Banks aren’t good examples imo. You can’t justify their antics by saying “they’re just frustrated with the system.” They should take responsibility for their crap just like everyone else.

      • LilyaMuz says:

        @ kitten
My intention was not to come at you. I guess I take offense with the word “idiot” being thrown around so often when women are trying to express ideas, even if the way they do it – the platform they choose, and even the point is making is flawed. I’ve just seen it used so many times against women who I both agree with and those I don’t but it’s all too often a way to dismiss them and shut them up, and too often it works.
I see that was not your aim, and I was just responding to how I took not just your comment but general attitude about her & other females on this site. I really wasn’t trying to start anything!

A few of my friends are close with Azealea and from what I’ve heard she does want to change minds and is passionate and often cares too much, which is why the message gets so muddled by the many things, both personal and otherwise, that bother her. Sometimes that means that the important conversations are mixed in with the petty. She had a falling out with one of my best friends and what you say about shooting herself in the foot a lot of the time and getting derailed is also true. I too wish it wasn’t the case but I can’t hold it against her because it’s her choice of how she chooses to speak out, and I just appreciate the fact that she puts her opinions out there. She is interested and interesting. I feel the same way about Nicki, to an extent so it disheartened me on the previous thread to see so much vitriol directed at her, esp her body and her intellect. I’m sorry if it seemed I was directing that at you but after the last post coming into this one and saw your post, thought it was a good place to say why I disagreed with the word choice and dismissive tone. Honestly I agree the whole way of going about it is maybe wrong but it’s also just how most people communicate now. I personally don’t relate to it, and the fact that I am 20 but i’ve never had a twitter speaks to that but for these people it’s the easiest way to get their point of view across to as many people as possible.

Sure, Nicki might be juvenile at times and the delivery/context isn’t perfect but why wait for the perfect moment when it is? Does that moment exist/

Again – I was not trying to come at you, but just start a discussion somewhere. There are a lot of people that genuinely believe that Nicki Minaj is stupid so I would hope that those those that don’t actually believe that would call the behavior stupid, and not dismiss women altogether and idiots, bc that makes it seem like anything they say is not worthy of attention. though I still fail to see how Nicki’s behavior has been stupid. imperfect and self-serving, perhaps. but I can’t really fault her for that.
I don’t really have a dog in this fight other than women being allowed to speak out truthfully without being torn down. I just think that is so important. But I do realize how I just came off as the biggest Nicki Minaj fan EVAR which would be hilarious to anyone that knows me.

        I hope that made sense.
Seriously. no “bad blood” here. (ha ha, sorry what is humor)

        and in response to

        @ Jay
Despite what my comments make it seem, I am not a huge Nicki fan, I think she has talent but a lot of the time she prefers to make things that she knows will be popular when I think she has more to offer

Also in terms of the props comment I referenced this at the end of my comment saying: This conversation is so important because it basically an extension of the struggle WOMEN face, where they are often seen as objects, their opinions invalidated because of their gender, how our way of dress and appearance is more scrutinized. Well, a black woman not only has to deal with that but also with other women telling her that she’s an idiot for getting upset about her own particular experience

        — I’m saying this all as a French Mexican raised in Paris/New York. I’ve just witnessed the treatment of black women and educated myself on the subject. My little adopted cousin is black and I have seen how different the treatment she gets is and how it affects her to see the perception of black women in media.

I was not attempting to justify Nicki or Banks. As I said many times over they are flawed human beings. But that doesn’t invalidate the important points they are capable of making. They can be frustrated with the system, say awful things, and say things that need to be said and heard all at the same time. It’s called complexity

      • Kitten says:

@ LilyaMuz-Thanks for the insight on Banks. Interesting to think she may care too much, when I’ve always kind of gotten the opposite impression of her.

I didn’t mean to sound dismissive because truly, I agree that people dismiss women all too often, even if what we’re saying has value. But we have to remember that as women, we have to work harder and be “nicer” because we aren’t granted the same level of support and recognition as men. And black women? They have to work triply (is that a word) as hard. It’s f*cked up but it’s the way it is. As women, our important messages have to be delivered in a non-threatening, amenable format. We have to be more cognizant of how we present our opinions and the forums we chose, or we make it too easy for society to brush us aside.

Now, I’ll try to tread lightly on this so as not so seem like I’m speaking for black women, but I think in a way this is what Banks rails against–the idea that black women should somehow have to overcompensate to conform to society’s idea of how they should be in order to avoid the “angry black woman” narrative that society wants to put on them. Or at least that’s how I’ve always viewed Banks’s rebellious attitude.
Sadly, she loses public support and marketability if she can’t play the game like say, Beyoncé. White America doesn’t want an Azaleia Banks because she threatens our conventional idea of what a black female artist needs to be in order to achieve success.

Myself? I find her fascinating and I still think there’s a place for her, both musically and in pop culture. Yes she can come across as incredibly abrasive, but she is a voice to be reckoned with.

PS I’m French also BTW. Wasn’t raised in France but mother is born and bred Breton 🙂

Let’s face it- life is high school. You never really leave the cafeteria, you just move tables…a lot.

  7. Kopi says:

Well, she’s not wrong. Sorry Taylor, you reap what you sow. Hypocrisy is nagl.

  8. Amelia says:

Disclosure – I’m a total Swifty apologist, but right now, I’d quite like to drop the lot of them in the middle of the woods and see if they actually have the potential to act like adults as opposed to digging bear traps for one another.
In my opinion, Nicki’s video wasn’t actually that good even for the VMAS, Taylor should’ve kept quiet and not jumped to the conclusion (rightly or wrongly) that Nicki’s message was for her and she and Katy need to grow the hell up and accept they’re both very successful but very different artists who fill different bits of the market.
    /rant over.

I have little to no time for playground arguments today. *Mixes a giant pitcher of mojitos*
You’d never think they were all very savvy career professionals.

    • Kit says:

I disagree. Katy has allowed Taylor to pretty much openly attack her and prance around on stage screeching “BAD BLOOD” about her for months now. She made a whole video basically collecting a bunch of D-list celebs around her to prove to Katy that she is Very Popular. Katy timed this well; she called Taylor on her hypocritical crap.

I think people are starting to see how awful of a person Taylor really is. You could kind of tell already by the eye-rolling and snit faces when other people won awards she thought she had locked down or by the way she treated her ex-boyfriends but not it’s obvious.

      • pinkish says:

THIS. I don’t feel one way or another about any of these ladies, but Taylor’s whole “You’re welcome to share the stage with me” bit….very revealing. She’s a narcissist.

      • Erinn says:

I wouldn’t say she allowed her to openly attack her. Katy has played it in a sneaky way. She also allowed the guy she was boning (who was going to become a father any day with another woman) to openly attack Taylor based on her body – she just had others doing the dirty work for her.

If Katy had been a completely 3rd party, I might agree with the sentiment. But there’s no way that she’s not relishing in jumping into this twitter argument. And her phrasing/grammar is just so bad – she’s trying SO HARD to sound more intelligent than she is.

      • Casi says:

Agree with Erinn. Katy, make sure you know what the words mean before you put them in a tweet. Not doing so doesn’t invalidate the message, but it certainly diminishes it.

Katy is the ultimate loser in this because she’s with John Mayer. Yuck.

    • Artemis says:

in my opinion, Nicki’s video wasn’t actually that good even for the VMAS

Neither was Wrecking Ball, yet it won ‘Video of the Year’. Why? It doesn’t have to be GOOD, it has to have impact on popular culture which is why I do think Cyrus earned it and Nicki, however bad it was, earned one too. So why didn’t she get a nom? It broke records and when you consider the amount of press ‘Anaconda’ got and the endless discussions on feminism, gender and body acceptance, then it should deserve some recognition.

I don’t understand how people can come on gossip blogs and consume pop culture every single day, even connected with it 24/7 through social media and then deny its impact to society time and time again.

The most glaring example is how KK post are very popular here, people love pop culture, trashy or classy (I would even say trashy > classy). So this is good gossip because it’s so relevant with women in the business (acting and singing) starting to speak out about inequality more. Nicki’s conversation is on point and relevant. The added drama is just part of it and I ain’t mad about it lol!

      • K says:

Pretty much on point. I didn’t like the song or video and thought the message was terrible but it had a huge impact on pop culture and should have been nominated, since that is what the VMAs are about really.

      • Amelia says:

        That’s interesting to know, Artemis & K.
I don’t tend to pay a great deal of attention to the VMAs, partly because it’s difficult to find a broadcaster here in the UK and partly because I assumed it was just a popularity contest (which . . . well, I guess it is.)
I wasn’t aware it had anything to do with the influence of pop culture. With that in mind, it does seem like Nicki is the odd one out by not having Anaconda nominated; I’ve seen that in *so* many places lately.

      • someone says:

The video of Miley naked and licking for Wrecking Ball was weird and gross but the song itself is very good. Anaconda is not a good song.

      • LilyaMuz says:

YEP! this could also be said about Rihanna’s BBHMM video Katy references – which y’know personally I didn’t 100 percent love but it started a lot of conversations and was without a doubt a compelling, thought out and beautifully made video. Though I can’t say the same about Anaconda, I do think it had a similar cultural impact to Wrecking Ball for example, with an emphasis on the woman’s black body- something that is apparently okay as a prop in a rap video, or a Miley Cyrus video, ooor even as a joke in a Swift video but is seen as gauche and “gross” as so many on this very website have called it. Very telling. Minaj is a smart woman with an education and I think the way she sexualizes herself is perhaps a commentary in itself of reclaiming the black female body. The amount of vitriol she gets for it in is very telling…

      • Tiffany :) says:

This isn’t about your comment specifically, but it seems like some people think there is a quid pro quo set up here: if you show enough skin or cause controversy, then you are automatically guaranteed a nomination for video of the year. I think the idea of “well Miley got a nom, so Nicki should too” is saying who exploits their body the most for public consumption is owed something for that degradation.

I feel the way black women are portrayed in media is such an important issue, it needs to be discussed. But Nicki is kind of hijacking the issue for selfish reasons. If this was about racism, I don’t think two of the 5 nominees for VOTY would be African American.

      • Otaku Fairy says:

I did think that of those videos, BBHMM is the most interesting.

@Tiffany: To degrade means to lower in value. To argue that anyone who chooses to go naked or be immodest in a photo, music video, movie role, etc. is automatically degrading themselves is to argue that the value of a human being is determined by sexual modesty. It also brings up the question of why Nicki Minaj is seen as ‘lowering herself in value’ by showing skin and sexualizing herself, but when Adam Levine chooses to get naked on his album cover or Channing Tatum decides to sexualize himself in a movie role or Justin Bieber and John Legend get naked on instagram, people don’t slut-shame them by saying that they’ve ‘lowered themselves in value.’

    • LilyaMuz says:

      .

      • LilyaMuz says:

        @tiffany

        yeah I see your point
I think the argument the sexualizing herself as some sort of commentary of the state of female objectification might be giving too much credit, and it’s admittedly a bit of wishful thinking in my part because this is what gets the most exposure for some reason. I’m trying to find a silver lining, I guess?

I was more trying wasn’t really trying to say that wrecking bell and anaconda are sort of on the same level in that sense so I see the frustration that Nicki could feel that one gets rewarded while the other doesn’t.

I think Nicki should stop focusing so much on attention, or these awards that obviously don’t have anything to do with true value and merit and instead really express her frustrations through making good music that I think she is capable of.

  9. LB says:

Well played indeed. She didn’t say anything major when Taylor did the interview, revealing what Bad Blood was about. She didn’t say anything major when Taylor started collecting an army of friends. She didn’t say anything when Taylor made a video for Bad Blood. A few tweets here and there but she mostly just kept her head down, continued touring, did the Super Bowl gig, ended up on the cover of Forbes for her financial decisions.

Waited for a Taylor misstep and pointed out the most hypocritical part of Taylor’s brand of feminism when others were finally receptive to hearing it. I hope Katy leaves it at this because everyone knows Taylor thrives off of being a victim and will bounce back easily (she’s young, white, cute, has tons of fans, and despite this misstep, is in control of her brand completely. She will bounce back – wouldn’t even be surprised if she got Minaj on stage with her).

But kudos to Katy Perry. Can’t believe I’m actually on her side.

    • Aren says:

Yes, Katy has been the mature one about the Bad Blood Bullying and it’s surprising because she doesn’t seem particularly bright, even for a pop singer.

What surprises me is that so many women wanted to appear in that silly video when they knew what it was about.

      • pinkish says:

Any attention is good attention for most of them.

      • Kiki04 says:

Are they really women that have anything meaningful going on? I feel like most of them I just shrugged at, and the other half I had to google who they were.

    • Abbott says:

Exactly. Katy played this well; gave Taylor enough rope to hang herself. No doubt Taylor is trying to get Nicki on stage with her for a photo op but, by the look of her tweets, Nicki isn’t up for playing that game.

    • Dubois says:

Katy threw some subtle shade at Taylor during her Superbowl performance (supposedly related to their back-up dancer feud). Google “katy perry diss taylor swift superbowl” and knock yourself out. Her shade is subtle though, I’ll give her that.

    • cheryl says:

      Slow clap for Katy.

  10. Nicole says:

Except Katy just did the same thing Taylor did. She saw someone who was getting raked over the coals (justifiably) and decided to leap in. She has had months to say something, but waited until Taylor was already wounded.

I don’t buy any of their “Feminism.”

    • Dawn says:

      Exactly.

    • Aren says:

      I think it’s different.
Nicki was bringing up some valid points and instead of addressing them Taylor made it all about her and offered to invite Nicki to her “cool group”.
She completely ignored and disregarded Nicki’s perspective on the issue.
What Katy did was point out how Taylor seems to have double standards when it comes to what “setting girls against each other” means, depending on how it suits her.

    • Cynthia says:

It’s different though. Taylor literally capitalized off her beef . She “let it slip” in her interview that Bad Blood was about Katy to create hype for the song and then made that massive video. It’s really hypocritical for her to accuse other women of being antifeminist imo.

    • pinkish says:

Not really, she waited for the perfect time to point out her hypocrisy. What would be the ideal response to being bullied like that?

    • Otaku Fairy says:

Making a valid point and calling out another woman on hypocritical mean-girl behavior is not anti-feminist or immature.

  11. KooplaK says:

I have to disagree. This tweet was barely readable. I like what she is saying but it came out as if a cat jumped on her keyboard as she was typing.

    • Shambles says:

Kitty Purry does not appreciate your shade. Kitty Purry manages all of Katy’s Twitter accounts, and there’s only so much a feline can do while typing with 3 claws and eating Fancy Feast. She’s trying her best, okay?? 😉

      • I Choose Me says:

        Ha, ha.

All I know is reading all of these back and forth tweets makes me feel like I’m back in high school.

    • dr mantis toboggan says:

Her cat would have made more sense than that.

  12. ?forYa says:

Why the hell is everyone in their feelings about a VMA nomination? It not fair, i made my but big and no one likes it , dont talk about me cause im a skinny white woman. It all make me want to have a Samuel Jackson bitchfit ( I’m sick of the whiny mf tweets on my mf screen) ahhhh….. now I feel better.

  13. Allie says:

I’m calling it now- Taylor will win for best video, will make a speech involving feminism and discrimination is the music industry and then invite Minaj up to the stage. Everybody will hail Taylor the worlds best person next to Amal and I will continuously beat my head against the wall.

    • Aren says:

I was thinking Ed was going to win. It’s going to look bad if Taylor wins best video at this point.

    • Nessa says:

Yup! This is 1,000,000% happening. Hopefully people see how transparent Taylor’s actions are, though.

    • Meryl says:

Yep. Her team will be on the phone all day ensuring she wins and planning a turn around on this whole issue.

      • Dubois says:

This. She has to win at this point, and her team will ensure it. She’ll address this fiasco in her acceptance speech, and put the whole thing to bed.

  14. Norman Bates' Mother says:

I’ve never thought that I will agree with Katy Perry on anything related to feminism, but I just wrote the same thing yesterday in the comment and it’s pretty obvious to anyone but Taylor that she is a major hypocrite and should seriously reconsider her approach to feminism. She thinks Tina and Amy are anti-women for making a joke about her, Nicki is a anti-women for criticizing VMA’s for favoring thin, pretty blondes but Taylor is all pro-women and a great feminist just because she has bazzilion girlfriends. But she doesn’t see a problem with the fact that her own actions are the complete opposite of what she preaches. She seems to have a very good team around her and has learned a lot in the past few years – I hope someone will explain to her how badly she looks in all this.

  15. BRE says:

I disagree. I have yet to see a move or response from Katy that is anywhere close to “brilliant”. She is the last person to step in on this argument on racism in the music industry considering she is the “queen’ of cultural appropriations

  16. Sonia says:

Katy is full of crap also. She is doing what she is preaching.Rubbish.

    • Deb says:

Agreed. Katy is not “brilliant” in any way, shape or form, nor particularly grammatical. Taylor shouldn’t have jumped in like she did, but at least she was big enough to apologize. Katy jumped in as well, even though it was also none of HER business. They’re all pretty immature to act this way.

  17. Lilacflowers says:

The unprofessional behavior by all of them is astounding.

  18. Maya says:

Go Perry – she just showed the difference between a woman and a girl.

Taylor Swift is the Jennifer Aniston in the music world – collects so called show business friends, cannot handle any form of criticism, hypocritical is their middle name, uses the very same showbusiness friends to attack people they dislike and then has the audacity to act the victim.

  19. Ronda says:

I dont like Katy but Taylor is a hypocrite.

Gawker has a nice post about Taylor

    http://gawker.com/taylor-swift-is-not-your-friend-1717745581

especially this line resonated with me what i always hated about her: “Her plan—to be as famous and as rich as she can possibly be—is working, and by using other women as tools of her self-promotion, she is distilling feminism for her own benefit.”

Also: I did not know that Taylor plays videos of her famous friends at her concerts where they are praising her and their “friendship”.

She is literally parading people around on stage. If it was other musicians and they would play songs, happens all the time, cool, but she simply wants to show the world how many famous (female!) friends she has.

    • Hannah says:

I am no Katy fan. I literally can’t stand her music. But compared to Taylor she comes across as having more real genuine friendships which is says a lot about a person. As far as I have seen her girlfriends aren’t collected from Victoria secret models or whoever is popular at any given time. Bar Rihanna her bffs seem to be non famous people.Taylor literally collects famous friends. I am saying this as someone who believes taylor is more talented than Katy but she comes across as extremely vain and superficial, and quite insecure which is a giant turn off.

    • Tiffany :) says:

““Her plan—to be as famous and as rich as she can possibly ”

Does anyone in show biz have a different goal than that, though?

      • Kiki04 says:

Like attracts like. She uses her friends, and they use her for the publicity. I guess they all have the same goal in that group 🙂

  20. OhDear says:

I’m cackling at Katy Perry’s involvement.

On another note, I don’t understand why the media is portraying this as a “beef” between Minaj and Swift. Minaj complained about not geting a VMA how the music industry overlooks black women generally (yes, the VMAs are small potatoes, but it’s still a signifier AND she and Beyonce are not the only black female artists out there). Swift somehow managed to make it about herself and Minaj reacted rather politely even though Swift was condescending as all hell.

    • Kiddo says:

Swift makes EVERYTHING about Swift. That just stands, no matter the context.

    • word says:

Well let’s see if Nicki shows up at the VMA’s. I mean if she’s not happy with the nominations then why even show up? This is all great publicity for all these ladies…it’s almost like it was all planned ahead of time hmmmm.

  21. Ronda says:

oh and for that Taylor stunt a good post from tumblr:
“Nicki was adressing some real problems about the industry and Taylor derailing the conversation and making it about herself proves that white feminists are useless when it comes to problems woc face. And then the media spun it around to make Nicki look like the one who attacked Taylor by prepetuating the angry black girl narrative. It’s an important discusion we must have, waste of time maybe to whites.

What originally happened was Nicki saying something like “Had I done a music video featuring skinny girls instead of curvy ones I would be nominated”

And then Taylor jumped into the fray with her “I’ve always loved and supported you, let’s not pit women against each other” which is ironic since Bad Blood is Taylor’s passive aggressive/bitchy way of attacking Katy Perry.”

    • Kiddo says:

Taylor is a phony douche. It makes me appreciate the Kanye stunt a few years back.

I wish Nicki knew old Carly Simon songs, and replied with a one line lyric: “You’re so vain, you probably think this song (tweet) is about you”.

    • AlmondJoy says:

I agree with everything you said. And how the media twists things to perpetuate the angry black girl narrative IS an important discussion to have, but the past few weeks have shown that this probably isn’t isn’t the best place to do so 😔 The issue will get overlooked, undermined or outright ignored.

      • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Stay strong girl, I know how it feels…

      • AlmondJoy says:

Eternal Side Eye, I KNOW you’ve got to be even more exhausted than I am. You have actually taken to the time to explain everything in detail, with much opposition. I applaud you. I can’t even.

Alex, ignore is correct. People dont want to face the facts.

    • Alex says:

yep and some media outlets got dragged for perpetuating that stereotype to the point where they had to issue apologies. but I said the same thing yesterday…not only is Taylor not a feminist but a lot of white feminists will actually ignore WOCs

  22. Amy says:

    1. Katy has a point totally except She is doing what Taylor was criticized for – making it all about her. Nicki’s original tweet was calling out racism in the music industry and now all we’re talking about is two white women who hate each other. Nicki’s original point is getting lost

    2. I know what she’s feuding with Taylor but what’s Katy’s beef with punctuation?

    3. I’m pretty sure Rihanna is high on a beach somewhere, not caring about this bullshit.

  23. Jayna says:

I love pop girl snarky fights. I thought this group was generic for a long time, nothing like the snark back in the days of Madonna and Cher and Mariah, Janet about Madonna, etc.

But Gaga dropped her I love everyone, Little Monsters, facade when Katy Perry’s album single Roar beat hers. She made some very snarky tweets about Katy down the road, like Katy copying her with a wig color (Gaga invented colors for hair? LOL) showing she was never above it. Then this drama with Katy and Tay-Tay. Tay-Tay’s video was aimed at Katy. Everyone knew it. This drama between Nicki and Taylor and Katy jumping in is entertaining. LOL.

  24. NGBoston says:

    Agree with #10-Nicole……x’s 10,000

  25. Talie says:

It was bound to happen eventually and Katy had her opening, so she took it. I don’t blame her, afterall, she inspired Bad Blood and it cleaned up.

    • word says:

LOL could you imaging if Bad Blood wins a VMA and Katy goes up there and rushes the stage saying she earned that VMA !

  26. Cynthia says:

I laughed out loud at Katy’s tweet.
I’ve read all the think pieces about the situation and I’m glad that Taylor is getting called out for her faux -feminism, she’s full of shit. I used to like her music but she clearly has a victim complex. How can you make another person’ issue about perceived discrimination ( whether you agree or not) about you?
She’s the epithome of tone deaf white feminism that has no idea of what intersectionality is.

    • Kiddo says:

She’s not even close to white feminism, you give her too much credit. She’s an advocate for Swifterism.

  27. cleveland girl says:

I read both tweets about 10 times and can’t understand what any of it means. Lol. I guess I am not cool enough.

  28. Jackson says:

Why is she saying anything? She seems even more childish and mean-girlish by sticking her nose into a matter that didn’t concern her, simply to get a dig in at someone she already doesn’t like. Sure, let’s all be strong women role model feminists discussing important issues like race and society….as we act like silly mean-girl twees.

  29. AlmondJoy says:

Katy is right, but her tweet still doesn’t address Nicki’s original point.

    • Kiddo says:

I think no one should have responded to Swift. They gave away their power to her, by dignifying her tweet.

      • AlmondJoy says:

It’s true, Kiddo. But Swifty is so good at playing the victim and she knows how to manipulate situations to the point where people feel the need to respond.

Im pretty annoyed with this whole situation, as I find all three of these women supremely annoying and self serving. Nicki and Katy do have a point though.. Taylor does not.

      • Kiddo says:

I know.I agree. But responding does kind of bolster Swift’s bullshit self-appointed leader of all the women. KWIM? Like, Who died and left you queen of all things feminine? She’s the leader of the mean popular girl’s table in the cafeteria, like you see in all these predictable high school films. Why give credence? Someone needs to be the adult.

      • AlmondJoy says:

“Who died and left you queen of all things feminine?”

EXACTLY. As my mom would say, she’s smelling herself. Believes her own hype and has an inflated sense of self. So immature and she doesn’t even realize how much of a bully she is. But Nicki actually the same way… She has a huge ego. Too much of an ego to ignore her.

  30. Mispronounced Name Dropper says:

So these are some of the most high profile women in the entertainment industry? Is this really the best we can do?

    • Kitten says:

      +1

    • Kiddo says:

You ask THIS in a culture replete with constant Kardashian coverage?

    • word says:

I know it must be so hard being rich, healthy, young, pretty, and talented. They have to find something stupid to moan about.

    • Dream Big says:

It’s easy to call this all petty and what not. But when you’re fed up, you’re fed up! At this point if I was Nicki, I would take a good look at myself and life. I would realize all I’ve accomplished, then think about all that I still can accomplish. She’s taken her risks and survived. Why not now say f the character she’s always playing and actually speak up about the truth?

Like I said when you’re fed up you are fed up! Can I blame her for having a Twitter which is an open diary? With social media, you either think too long before you post so it’s perfect, or you act instantly without thinking! Why does nicki have to take her time with a perfect, well thought out, “politically” correct version? Why can’t Nicki speak like most of the ppl of this generation, so they can follow her and understand?(that is so important to be able to reach as many PPL as you can. Yes many ppl don’t speak “proper” English) Why is that a joke ? I appalled her for keeping it together so long. For feeding into stereotypes for middle America to feel comfortable. I respect what she had to say. I don’t care she has an ego the size of my period pimple every month😑…

Nicki risked her whole career to finally start a discussion that hopefully we all refuse to never stop talking about until change happens! Take the time to understand others and their cultures. Step outside of your comfort zone! This is an American problem. Ppl from other countries travel and see first hand how different yet similar we all are. Let’s have some more respect for each other.

Respect is what this all comes down to. Respect what others have to say and how they want to live, even when you don’t agree or get it. We all want the respect and freedom to be who we are. This is not about a VMA. This is about real sh&t! Please let’s see the important BIGGER issue here! Change will come. I hope Nicki and everyone with a platform to speak and be heard, gets VERBAL DIARRHEA (sorryyyy lol).

  31. Kiki says:

This is stupid beyond control. This is probably why the universe is showing me why I am never going to be a singer. Why the constant beef about who is better than who? This is a constant excess of sheer desperation of fame and fortune so these artist can be at the top of the game. O Adele where are you when we needed you ao you can kick some ass again to these silly pop artists?

  32. InvaderTak says:

Wonder what Swifty’s say is going to be like. NM, KP and now even Ed Sheeran are taking shots at her. At least that’s what she’ll see. Not a good day at all, and I’m not snickering and quietly enjoying it, but she had it coming didn’t she? Anyone think this will only get worse? The VMA folks are probably loving it. If it is fake for drama, I doubt TS was a part of the plan because no way would she or her people make her look this dumb. But then again, they decided to try and sell t shirts in China that read “TS-1989”.

    • G says:

LOL Ed Sheeran took a shot at Taylor Swift? Moe like he defended her, and caught a lot of flack for it himself. I agree with his point to be honest. Nicki’s point is lost when Beyonce has been nominated for 7/11.. and there’s only one skinny white girl nom’d!

      • InvaderTak says:

No pretty sure he was mocking the twitter beef TS/NM got into with Bruno Mars. I find it hard to believe he didn’t know that’s what Bruno was doing when he started that.

  33. Taylor says:

Of course Katy would jump in when Taylor is involved. BBHMM wasn’t nominated because it’s an awful video that glorifies violence against women. It doesn’t make it OK just because the violence is coming from another woman instead of a man. You don’t get a nomination just because you have a controversial video.

    • lile says:

Agree. Love BBHMM and Rihanna, but not a fan of the video AT ALL. KP is just a “kick ’em while their down” kind of person.

    • Otaku Fairy says:

My only problem with the violence against women argument about Rihanna’s video is the fact that most of the people making the argument have no problem reading books and comics, watching tv shows and movies, (including horror) or playing video games where female fictional characters (and fictional characters of all ages and genders) get beaten up, sometimes sexually assaulted, kidnapped, tortured, or even killed by evil villains and monsters. So I don’t think that being done by a female singer pretending to be a criminal doing that to a female fictional character should be any more taboo.

  34. kri says:

So now we are going to have a 4 way performance at the VMAs? Minaj, Swifty, Katy and Riri? If I was an MTV exec, I’d emerge from my coke tweak and get on the phone to make this happen. Everyone is talking about it. And I’d get Ed and Bruno all kitted up as referees and get them onstage too. Now there is a performance I’d watch.

  35. G says:

All of this idiocy makes me miss Adele 🙁

  36. MSat says:

I would like all three of these women to have to spend a weekend out on the street busking using whatever musical talent they have to make money. And then live on that money for a week.

This is ridiculous. Complaining that your video didn’t get ENOUGH nominations? Do these bitches even know how hard it is for independent artists to get a video made, never mind get a song played on the radio? News flash, the music industry is dying, artists don’t make money anymore, and they should ALL be thanking whatever deity they believe in that they’ve all made it to the top.

I miss the days when artists were too cool and too busy creating music to care about stupid awards. You know who else never got an award? Jimi Hendrix. Janis Joplin. Jim Morrison. Ever hear any of them whine about it?

    • lile says:

PREACH!!!!! Humanity in general, spends entirely too much time yearning for what they do not have, instead of thanking God for what they do have. And all these women have an AWFUL LOT. Personally, that is why I love Taylor, as an artist AND a human being. She reaches out A LOT to those in need. Spends a good chunk of her time reaching out, in fact. She does seem genuinely grateful for what she has and does not hesitate to share. HOWEVER, I would have liked her to approach Nicki privately instead of on Twitter. She should not have stooped to Nick’s childish level, because make no mistake, Nicki was acting like a spoiled brat who didn’t get her way. I hope Nicki DOES go up on stage with Taylor EVERY TIME she wins and they both talk about inequality in the music industry and inequality in our communities. The only way we will fix this problem is TOGETHER. Divided, we will all fall to Trump’s “silent majority” which really means all the closet racists out there who want to take our country back 50-60 years. Ladies, STICK TOGETHER, make a united stand, and let’s change this world for the better!!!! Oh, and BTW, fvxk KP!

  37. perplexed says:

Except for this one tweet(which is true), Katy Perry doesn’t seem to have been as harsh on Taylor as Taylor has been on Katy (i.e the Bad Blood music video).

  38. The Original Mia says:

Katy is right. Taylor talks a good, fake game about feminism, then gets celebrated for that ridiculous mean girl video about Katy. And what was the supposed faux pas that Katy committed against Saint Taylor? Dating John Mayer. I mean…girl, really? Good for Katy for staying silent this long, as I would have ripped that chick a new one long ago. Anyway…let’s hope Taylor learns from this because she’s not getting any younger and her antics are getting old.

  39. original kay says:

This just serves to remind me why I avoid groups of women, to hang out with and have as friends.

I will never understand the gossip, backstabbing, two faced bullshit that goes on. I suppose it happens with men as well, but since I’m not a man I can’t comment on that.

I have 1 close friend, another close enough, and that’s good. We don’t bullshit each other. It’s refreshing, after reading all this drama. I’m going call her and say hi and thank you for being a friend **smiles**

    • me says:

Men do it just as much. I also keep a small circle. The more friends you have, the more drama you have to deal with.

    • Kiddo says:

There is a difference between genuine friends, and friends to be seen with for publicity, who aren’t actually friends.

      • original kay says:

It’s in the eye of the beholder though, and unfortunately you don’t know that until you are tossed under the bus.

A special place for women who don’t support other women, indeed.

    • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Is stereotyping women really helping anything?

There are good men and bad men, good women and bad women. Attempting to paint men as lovely saints and women as catty bitches is unrealistic and a little weak tbf.

Do you suppose if you were friends with Bill Cosby or Jim Bob or Donald Trump you’d be complaining about women? No. Whatever negative experienxe youve had with a small percentage of women has nothing to do with the majority.

      • Lucky Charm says:

I’d rather hang out and be friends with men than with women. Having one or two really close, best friends is about it, any more female friends is just begging for drama which I prefer to stay away from. With men, there’s far less drama and you can be far more comfortable. Just my observations and experience. 🙂

  40. Flim says:

Bottom line: there IS no “choreo” in Anaconda, and the song features none of Minaj’s trademark humor and style. It’s boring, played-out, and doesn’t deserve a nom.

    • IMO says:

I found it to be utterly nasty. Singing about big D*cks while rolling around all greased up is not art. Sorry, not sorry.

  41. lile says:

BBHMM is an AWESOME song and I ADORE Rihanna…….but the video???? It was hella bloody and more than a little disturbing. As art, it was certainly interesting and very edgy, but AGAIN, as far as MTV is concerned, the selection really seems to be based on content and NOT artist image. These are VIDEO awards and Rihanna’s video was definitely not to everybody’s taste. Having said all that, I hope Nick and Taylor get through this as friends and make KP eat crow.

  42. paranormalgirl says:

    And these are adult women?

  43. Jessibes says:

Personally I know very little of these three women. But over on Buzzfeed I have read Minja’s comments about sexuality & education which I aplauded. Can’t say that about the other two – Taylor seems mostly concerned about the perfect picture with her famous friends.

    Just my superficial view.

  44. Keriann says:

    VIDEO OF THE YEAR Nominees:
    Beyoncé – “7/11″
Ed Sheeran – “Thinking Out Loud”
Taylor Swift ft. Kendrick Lamar – “Bad Blood”
Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars – “Uptown Funk”
    Kendrick Lamar – “Alright”

Only one skinny girl in this group. It’s obvious she was referring to TS. Just own it, Nicki. The people that love Nicki will continue to do so. These ladies need to find a real problem to focus on.

    • Corrie says:

But she wasn’t. Her first tweets have been and are about music industry and the black women’s lack of acknowledgment over counters. She was referring Miley Cyrus – not just the category. Read her whole thread not just the one tweet.

    • Jessibes says:

Miley won last years best video with the “wrecking ball”

  45. Corrie says:

As the saying goes, if you can dish it, you can take it. Taylor likes the dish but hates taking it. So you hate Jake, Taylor, John, Nick and Katy but WE don’t have to hate them too. LOL. You make songs about them, convince others to hate them, make outlandish videos teasing them and then think its ok to still dish victim and “feminism” girl sit down. Katy and Taylor are equals. They make entirely too much money to play the victim to anybody when they are the top of music industry. So involving fans I find disgraceful. Her lyrics to Bad Blood are petty and show she’s lost being accountable for her actions. Its all ME ME ME. Katy / Taylor move on ladies. Nicki, write better music. But make your point heard.

  46. Bibby says:

What a horrible bully Katie Perry is.

  47. Louisa says:

This isn’t Katy supporting Nicki or taking a stand against white feminism, this is her being petty because Taylor made Bad Blood about her. Until I see her post a tweet saying how problematic racism is in the music industry and addresses her own cultural appropriation tendencies, I wouldn’t interpret this as a sign of personal growth or “standing up for feminism”.

  48. word says:

Taylor tweeted an apology. Not sure if it’s sincere or just damage control though.

  49. Veronica says:

I have issues with Swift’s sanitized feminism, but Katy Perry as a feminist ally? Really? This is the same woman who refused to call herself one and made it clear she didn’t really understand the meaning of the word, ala Evangeline Lily. And then the ridiculous PR fail when she raised money for Australian schools and handed it off to one of the most privileged ones rather than doing any research? And if we’re talking intersectionality…we are discussing the same Katy Perry who appropriated Asian cultural dress and then when called out for it referred to everyone as “over sensitive?” PR move or not, Taylor is wise enough to at least appear graciously apologetic than pull a, “Sorry you were offended.”

  50. Joh says:

Katy and Niki sell T and A………..
    Now that’s art!

    • Otaku Fairy says:

Who ever said art required chastity or modesty?

      • Lucky Charm says:

Michaelangelo’s David is a perfect example. That is definitely art, and no chastity or modesty about it!

I don’t know much about these two, but Taylor Swift’s song and videos annoy the hell out of me. At least Katy Perry’s are sometimes catchy and her videos are that much less idiotic than Swift’s. They’re even cute sometimes.

None of Twitter ever makes any sense to me. Does Katy even grammar??

The comment was if your a white skinny girl? Well, in the name 3 are guys and the other is Beyonce. We know it was Taylor. Common

Damn Katy, you sniffed out the right time to attack but you sounded like such a dope. C’mon now….learn from this- you’ve got an audience and you’ve got a good “read” of the industry- don’t waste it…you probably won’t get another shot. Right now, you’re Rod Tidwell in Jerry Maguire and you’re lying in the end zone….take it in, my dear, you’ve earned it!

Although this whole feud thingy was fun to WATCH. It was staged, Kim Kardashian don’t get in on anything unless she is getting paid. She was commenting during the feud. Remember a few months ago TS started letting Kim get in pictures with her?? That’s when this got cooked up. TS doesn’t have friends she has business associates… Ijs
