Pierre Casiraghi married Italian heiress Beatrice Borromeo in Monaco on Saturday

I’ve never really had much of an opinion on Pierre Casiraghi. Pierre is the youngest of the Casiraghi children, the third kid after Andrea and Charlotte. Andrea was really hot once upon a time, but for the past five years or so, Andrea lost his mojo and Pierre sort of grew into his looks. Pierre at 27 is rather dashing, like a shy European prince (which he almost is). Anyway, Pierre married his long-time girlfriend in Monaco on Saturday. His bride is Beatrice Borromeo, a 29-year-old Italian heiress and swan-like beauty. They met in college – they were both studying at Milan’s Bocconi University – and they’ve been dating since May 2008. The bride wore a pink Valentino gown and I’m including Valentino’s photo of the gown above.

The civil ceremony was held in Monaco’s Pick Palace – I think Prince Albert presided over the civil ceremony, or at the very least he hosted the event. According to People Magazine, the extended Grimaldi, Casiraghi and Borromeo clans came together for a full day of activities. Charlotte was there with her on-again lover and baby-daddy Gad Elmaleh, Andrea was there with his wife Tatiana. The wedding is being hailed as a very, very big deal because Pierre and Beatrice were seen as the lovely scions of two grand European families.

Incidentally, I haven’t seen anything about Pierre’s mother, Princess Caroline, being seen with Pierre’s stepfather, Prince Ernest August of Hanover. I tend to believe that Ernest and Caroline separated years ago but they just haven’t got around to getting a divorce. Caroline seems to be staying in Monaco close to full-time these days while Ernest lives elsewhere (likely with a girlfriend/mistress).

It seems like this shindig in Monaco really was just for the civil ceremony. The couple will be doing a more traditional wedding ceremony and reception in Italy next weekend. Beatrice’s family – she’s the daughter of very rich and well-connected Italian aristocrats – owns several islands in Lago Maggiore, and it’s believed that the Borromeo side of the family is going to do a HUGE thing for next weekend’s wedding. Ten bucks says this whole thing gets a spread in several editions of Vogue. Vogue Italia, for sure, but I’m thinking Anna Wintour might even want some of the photos for American Vogue.

Seriously though, Beatrice is lovely. She looks like a fairytale princess.

Are they sure they aren’t related? They looks like siblings. Creepy.
Not much has changed in those circles, two rich families unite through marriage. I’m not saying they aren’t in love but their social status plays a big part in such unions.

    • Tiffany says:

There have been studies showing that after being together for years or decades to start to resemble your SO. They have been together 7 years, it seems they have gotten into a pattern.

I worked with a woman who has been with her husband for 30 years and she showed me a picture and I asked if she had been told they look alike and she said yes but it was not always like that.

    • seesittellsit says:

Thought the same thing: another sibling couple! Lawd, the amount of money and privilege – the world is truly an unfair place. One sympathizes with Carole Middleton’s determination to get a piece of the pie when reading what these two were born into . . .

  2. Pondering thoughts says:

    money marrying money

If you want some gossip on Pierre – there was a nasty pub brawl once. Pierre did the utterly most intelligent thing imaginable and picked a fight with a boxing champion over some silly matter.

I don’t envy her for marrying him. She is beautiful and rich and has status as a proper aristocrat. And then she marries some Grimaldi offspring. I doubt her family is delighted. His wikipedia entry doesn’t give any academic title though it mentions his university studies in economics something. Considering he started somewhere around 2005 … I guess he didn’t finish that one, did he?
So he is working with / for his daddy’s company /-ies.

She is a journalist and seems to have some kind of a career. Why do women like her pick men like him?

    • MinnFinn says:

UK and Scandinavian nobles would not consider her a proper aristo because she has no noble title due to the fact that her biological parents were not married.

That’s neither here nor there to me. All I care about is that there’s a new royal wearing great French and Italian fashion.

      • RocketMerry says:

That’s all I care about as well, which is why I’m just so pleased with this coupling! So many gorgeous dresses, such beautiful pictures, such lovely blond updos in our royal-gossip future… I can’t wait!

One thing about the Casiraghi clan, boy oh boy they can dress and take a picture.

      • Liberty says:

..love the fashion. They look sweet together, hope all will be well (meaning, no more crap Grimaldi curse nonsense).

And yay, that Charlotte seems to be still with her love!

      • belle de jour says:

Hate the sleeves, but love, love the color & neckline of that first Valentino dress.

    • SamiHami says:

Call me a silly romantic, but maybe…love?

      • Natalie says:

There are so many really sweet photographs of them together. She seems lovely and Pierre seems somewhat obnoxious.

    • bluhare says:

I’m with you. Pierre Casiraghi seems like a douche bag of the first water to me. And smug. Really really smug.

Although fun fact: She’s got a saint in her family tree.

    • MinnFinn says:

Same reason any women marries down. Settle vs. stay single.

  3. Elyse says:

Rich people with rich people with rich people. Everyone is so boring. Shake it up a little now and then, top 1%.

    • Kip says:

I agree, I mean, BORING…but it’s probably pretty hard for them to meet normal people, let alone take them seriously.

    • kibbles says:

Very vanilla, boring, and predictable. It’s always nice to see once in a blue moon when one of these old money people break out of the usual mold and marry someone who came from nothing. I’m not talking about the Middletons’ version of “middle class”. I mean someone from a real working class or middle class background who was intelligent enough to go to a good school and make something of himself or herself without family connections. These rich kids hang out in their own cliques at these universities. They don’t even bother to meet people whose families make anything less than several hundred thousand dollars per year.

      • Pondering thoughts says:

        @ kibbles

I agree. And I find solace in the idea that most of them have affairs and don’t get divorced from a partner they don’t regard as an equal let alone as a partner any more. 😀
Their lives aren’t that much nicer just their homes and their holidays.
And yes they tend to have more extramarital things going as they got the money to go on weekend trips and buy presents and because many people fall for a rich lover.

Just wait, she will be bored pretty soon judging by his CV.

      • MinnFinn says:

Several aristos have middle class spouses. A handful met their middle class spouses in bars.

Albert’s wife Charlene was from a truly middle class family. CP Frederik of Denmark met Mary Donaldson, a uni professor’s daughter in a Syndey pub. Zara Philips also met Mike Tindall in a Sydney bar. Peter met his wife Autumn who was a restaurant server/actress while he was in Canada.

      • LAK says:

Kibbles: you mean like Prince Edward marrying Sophie Rhys Jones?

She had no connections whatsoever with royalty, father was a car salesman, didn’t attend a special school full of children of the elite, didn’t go to university and instead trained as a secretary (very mad men of her) , was a working PR girl rather than a socialite when she met Edward at a charity engagement.

She’s now HRH The Countess of Wessex and HM’s favourite in-law of all the current crop of in-laws.

      • LAK says:

Minnfinn: Not forgetting Sophia now married to CP of Sweden. Or Daniel married to Victoria of Sweden.

      • notasugarhere says:

Queen Sonia of Norway, Queen Silvia of Sweden, CP Mette-Marit of Norway, Queen Letizia of Spain.

      • MinnFinn says:

LAK and nota – Also Rania of Jordan. There are lots of middle class spouses in royal circles aren’t there! And at least 3 connected thanks to being in the same city due to Olympic games. Reversing several generations of royal inbreeding is good for us plebs!

And dibs on Harry. I’ve always fancied him as inlaw. I’m off to check if I have enough skymiles to fly my 2 sporty eligible nieces with long glossy hair and me to the next Olympic games. It won’t be long now before you are all celeb*atching about me and calling me MinnFinnE.

      • MinnFinn says:

Grace Kelly and Masako or Japan

      • Lillylizard says:

Also Princess Mable of The Netherlands , married Queen Bea’s second son (deceased), she was a wild child with a drug dealer ex, very eccentric but also very hands on with her charity work and very well respected on the world stage. One of those surprise ‘didn’t she turn out well’ stories.

      • notasugarhere says:

MinnFinn(E) you could have them volunteer with InvictusGames in Florida next year.

  4. Betti says:

Her dress was lovely and I’m totally digging the pale pinkish pant suit she’s wearing in one of the photo’s.

    • ncboudicca says:

never heard of her but I do like her style in these photos. she seems naturally chic.

      I’m now feeling middle-class frumpy.

    • MinnFinn says:

I love her headpiece. Reminds me of Saturn’s rings.

      • notasugarhere says:

Ah, the antenna hat. Maxima of the Netherlands has one too.

      • MinnFinn says:

nota – Thanks for that tidbit about Maxima. I did not know that and it makes me her instant fan.

      • notasugarhere says:

Funny thing is, Maxima’s antennas were much longer, so she kept threatening to take her husband’s eye out with them. You can do an image search for the words maxima antenna hat to see pictures. She wore them, inexplicably, with a bland tan Valentino dress with black and white polka dots.

But then, a lot of Maxima’s fashion is a bit inexplicable!

    • Megan says:

Agreed. I love all of her looks in these photos.

  5. mj says:

What exactly is a fairytale princess supposed to look like?

    • aang says:

      I learned that when I was 3.

      • Lin says:

        You forgot the forth.
        4. Tall

      • LAK says:

Somebody better tell Princess Angela of Liechtenstein (Panamanian) or The Grand Duchess of Luxembourg (Cuban) both of whom are visibly not tall, white or skinny blondes, whose ethnicity is unmistakable.

  6. QQ says:

Pierre REALLY Bae’d Up like 10 levels (henceforth known as “Pulled a Nick Jonas!) he looked gawky and awkward for ALL the years but now he looks like a Handsome Version of his dad!

I disute the quiet shy Prince Thing..wasn’t he into bar fights and pulling the do you know who I am on civilians few years back? i think Charlotte even with the baby daddy is the least ridiculous of the bunch, cause Lets be honest, Andreas Looks perma strung out

    • Bridget says:

Someone pointed out that he’s almost always shot with the camera tilted because his face isn’t symmetrical, and now that’s all I see. I am a terrible person.

      • QQ says:

*furiously clicks UNSEE UNSEE UNSEE button*

      • Ennie says:

I always have to pose with my head tilted because my eyes are not symmetrical. Yes, it is noticeable, and yes, there is always nasty people pointing things that one cannot do anything about.

    • Pondering thoughts says:

      @ QQ

Yep, he did the most intelligent thing of them all by picking a professional boxing champion for a bar brawl. Allegedly his nose was broken but somehow the press didn’t get any pics.

      I don’t envy his bride.

  7. Talie says:

Andrea seems to have lost his looks for a very clear reason — if you see his face, you’ll know why.

  8. Maum says:

She looks like she stepped out of a Renaissance portrait. Beautiful neck.

  9. Kristen says:

    Isn’t it “Ernst,” not Ernest?

  10. MinnFinn says:

I’d never heard of Beatrice until this weekend. I like Charlene and now Beatrice’s fashion, tres chic, but always enough modesty and understatement to still be nobility.

And what an assault on my senses when this weekend I clicked through a few photos of Beatrice and then photos of Kate Middleton at her sailing appearance. Beatrice’ s fashion is Cinderella dressed for the ball and Kate is Cinderella before the ball. There are fashion bloggers wearing head-to-toe thrift store clothes who dress better than Kate at her best which is always white McQueen coats and white Jimmy Choo’s.

    • Natalie says:

Ugh, that christening outfit was garish. It was just too much for what should have been a nice country church ceremony.

    • Anne says:

Yes, Beatrice makes a strong, reassuring impression.

Kate Middleton, I’d say, is a sporty, fun-loving girl who really has no inherent sense for clothes or presentation. I often get the sense from her that she is wearing a costume, as though she was a character in a play. There is something awkward about it. That’s all very well, of course, different strokes for different folks, as they say, but it is frustrating to see her continually lauded as some kind of “style icon”, when, really, she is nothing of the sort.

  11. MelissaManifesto says:

I don’t care if they are richer than Bill Gates, every couple deserves happiness, they’ve been dating for a couple of years now. People cannot help where they come from, therefore I cannot hold it against them just because two wealthy people decided to get married.

Congrats to Pierre and Beatrice. I wish you happiness and peace in your marriage. God Bless!

    • MinnFinn says:

+1 Although they are richy rich, they are definitely not richer than Bill Gates.

  12. LittleTurtle says:

Mmhhh, quite a coincidence that almost royalty meets and marries his college sweatheart who happens to be an heiress!

    • Dena says:

His brother’s wife is an heiress as well. Coincidence, necessity or love?

      • Bridget says:

I don’t think the Grimaldi kids inherited a vast amount of money. Yes, the principality of Monaco is wealthy, but that’s Albert, and I don’t know that Caroline would have split up her own personal fortune (though her daughter with Ernst is set for life). I don’t think it’s coincidental that both Casiraghi sons married major money.

      • Pondering thoughts says:

        @ Bridget

I think that all children and all grandchildren of the late Rainier of Monaco did get a substantial trust fund. Because: they don’t have to work and it looks as if they aren’t really going to work hard for money. Just look at Pierre’s wikipedia page: he did study but no degree … So which business would employ somebody who did a university fail… he has got the name and his family has connections and that is why he has got a job at all – if he is working at all, that is.

      • MinnFinn says:

Pierre’s net worth estimates are about $50 mil. He has major holdings in his deceased father’s construction firm. It’s not clear how much of his net worth comes from Grimaldi vs. Casiraghi assets.

      • Ennie says:

It is my understanding that they are actually very rich just on their Casiraghi side. Caroline chose better the second time around. I think Charlotte even owns an island on her father side?
        They are half Italian.

      • Bridget says:

Pierre Casiraghi was reportedly in debt when he died (there’s long been rumors that his boat accident was orchestrated because of his unpaid debts to the mob). And I’m sure they got a nice trust fund from Ranier, but not the kind of astronomical sum that it would take the keep up with the lifestyle, or even the kind of money their little Hanoverian sister will inherit (Ernst is absurdly, obscenely wealthy).

      • Anne says:

Yes, that’s always the suspicion when money marries money. Judging by the pictures, I’d say there is genuine love between these two. . .

  13. Bridget says:

Pierre Casiraghi isn’t shy and quiet. He runs with a pretty hard partying crowd. And he’s really marrying up with Beatrice.

Ernst and Caroline separated years ago, but will likely never formally divorce. She doesn’t want to give up the HRH, and he doesn’t want to have to pay up.

    • vauvert says:

I have disliked him since he divorced his ex for Caroline and the press was all gaga over “beautiful Caroline finds live again”, not a thought soared for his first wife of “boring middle class background”, never mind her being the mother of his children. Jerk.

    • Pondering thoughts says:

Question is why did SHE marry HIM?

    • Olive says:

Ernst August lives together with his younger girlfriend for years now. They don´t hide, he has no problem showing his love. They hold hands, vacation together, go together to official events etc. Her name is Simona and she is an attractive woman with brown curls. As long as she doesn´t want the ring Caroline´s status is “safe”. The german press found out his new girlfriend is an ex-prostitute from Rumania. No idea if this is true or just typically xenophobic prejudice (young, eastern european woman = prostitute).

And yes, Caroline loves her HRH. She knows she outranks her own brother. For years now Caroline plays the proud, catholic (LOL) wife who stays married to her unfaithful husband…

Both had an affair, Ernst August divorced his intelligent “commoner” wife and mother of his sons so he could marry pregnant Caroline.

      • Anne says:

        Goodness, what a sham. . . .

I expect, for someone’s in Caroline’s position, the pressure to keep up appearances must be very strong. Perhaps it is the guiding force in her life. Imagine such a life!

    • perplexed says:

This is a question asked out of genuine curiosity: why would she lose her HRH title? Didn’t her first marriage end in divorce?

      • Bridget says:

The HRH only comes from her marriage to Ernst. The Grimaldi’s are Serene Highness, which ranks lower. So if she and Ernst divorce, it’s likely she would lose the title.

      • LAK says:

Bridget: it’s not unlikely, it’s fact. Ernst is a member of the BRF and had to get permission from HM to marry Caroline.

Due to Diana’s divorce shenanigans where she used the HRH as a bargaining chip, HM wrote a caveat to the letters patent that govern who can have an HRH that going forward, in the event of a divorce, the departing in-law would lose the HRH.

Due to law of unintended consequences, Fergie lost her HRH in the new ruling. She had been allowed to keep it. HM didn’t make any exception for her.

      • Bridget says:

@LAK I was just hedging my bet because I couldn’t remember if the Diana change was permanent :).

      • Dara says:

Wait – Ernst is part of the British Royal Family? My Venn diagram of the royal families of Europe is woefully lacking. Gosh they really are all related somehow aren’t they?

      • LAK says:

Dara: Fun Fact: all the European royals, including many of the defunct houses are direct descendants of Victoria and Christian 9 of Denmark.

Between the two of them, they married their bajillion children within all the royal houses who in turn married each other and so on and so forth.

      • Bridget says:

Technically, because Germany has no royalty anymore the Ernst only gets his HRH from his association with the British family (I think they descend from George IV or V), and even then it’s only a courtesy. It’s actually a bit convoluted. Basically, Ernst is an HRH because he calls himself one and the Queen lets him.

      • LAK says:

Ernst is more than just associated with the BRF. He is descended from the senior branch of it and if the Parliamentarians of the day had not decided to ignore the rule of male line primogenature so that Victoria could take the throne, he would be the current ruler of UK and it’s realms, not EIIR. He is descended from the 3rd son of George 3 whilst Victoria is from the 4th son.

Plus as long as males continue to be born, their previously deprived titles and peerages can’t go back into the pool to be dished out to future royal dukes of the BRF as they have merely been suspended rather than forfeited.

      • QQ says:

And ALso remember BRF used to be Gothas

Can I also say: I LOVED EVERYTHING about this #13 thread EVERY SINGLE THING *swoon hard at learned royal historyish Gossip in Celebitchy*

  14. tracking says:

At least she didn’t wear a long-sleeved lace white dress. She looks lovely. Now they can go off and make beautiful privileged babies together.

    • SamiHami says:

I love her pink dress, but what’s wrong with long sleeved white lace wedding gowns?

    • MinnFinn says:

I’ve read that Monaco royals have 2 weddings. The pink dress was for the civil ceremony. I bet she wears a lacey white dress next week during the religious ceremony. And this woman clearly has much better style than Kate Middleton. And she has fashion insiders as a close relative. An uncle was or is a senior exec at Valentino. So I’m looking forward to a gorgeous and well-designed white gown next weekend.

  15. perplexed says:

I’m just surprised he didn’t get her pregnant before the marriage.

She looks kind of like Lisa Kudrow, but smaller.

    • imqrious2 says:

OMG that was my thought, too!! They could be doubles in that first pic! (Not so much in the others though).

  16. Natalie says:

Andrea and Tatiana’s winter wedding was stunning. I hope they do publish the pictures -a late summer lake wedding in Italy sounds gorgeous.

    • Bridget says:

Really? I appreciate that Tatiana has her own style, but I thought it looked like she threw on any old dress for her wedding.

      • Natalie says:

It wasn’t so much her dress for me. I loved her long white cape and their wedding decorations in that Gstaad setting.

      • notasugarhere says:

That Switzerland wedding looked like a winter fairy land to me.

  17. canadiangirl says:

They have been together for years and look incredibly happy in their pictures, on both parts. I think they make a lovely couple. You can’t help under what circumstances you were born under, and in this case they met in similar circles. It happens. Google them. They have always looked happy, natural, casual and make a very sweet pair. I also think they have been living together for years in Milan. Oh and beatrice has a cute Facebook account and posts personal pictures of her life and a few with pierre.. very sweet couple.

  18. FingerBinger says:

The Grimaldi men marry well. The Grimaldi women not so much. Stephanie and Charlotte could use a few tips.

    • Anne says:

They do marry “well”, but they don’t always marry happily . . . . I know there were rumours that Princess Grace felt very trapped in her gilded cage and the current partner of Prince Albert doesn’t look too fulfilled in her position. . . .

Beatrice & Pierre, though, do look very happy together. I hope it all goes well for them.

  19. Twinkle says:

    Sweet looking couple.

  20. perplexed says:

Rich people probably marry other rich people because that’s what they’re exposed to at the kind of gatherings they go to — sort of like how actors marry other actors.

Stephanie married a circus performer, I think, and everyone was all “What is she thinking?” I think the circus performer cheated, so in that case, the criticism made sense. But there seems to have been other instances where “royals” (who are not British) have married outside their station, and the bridge or groom is usually criticized for not being “classy” enough. So it seems you’re darned if you and darned if you don’t.

    • minxx says:

Yes, she married a circus performer but before that Stephanie married Daniel Ducruet, who was, I believe, her bodyguard. She had two children by him, Louis and Pauline and quickly divorced him when he cheated with a Belgian stripper (photos were published). Later she got pregnant by another bodyguard and Camille Gottlieb is the product of this liaison.. though for years Stephanie didn’t disclose the identity of Camille’s father. She also had a couple of relationships with circus performers – she married one of them, and her kids traveled with the circus for a bit – I remember seeing photos of young Pauline in a circus costume, performing. I suppose it was an adventure for them – all kids seem to have a good relationship with their mom and the rest of the family.
I love Beatrice’s civil ceremony dress – she has so much style ! Religious wedding will be held at the Lago Maggiore (her family owns the islands) in a spectacular setting on the island, just like the wedding of her sister a few years back. http://www.travelviaitaly.com/the-borromean-islands-natures-beauty-at-its-best/palazzo-borromeo-garden-isola-bella-borromean-islands-italy/.

      • perplexed says:

Oh yeah, it was the bodyguard who cheated! I knew somebody cheated, and that most of Stephanie’s relationships have been duds in terms of turning out successfully.

  21. Suzy from Ontario says:

I love that she felt confident enough to go with a non-traditional wedding dress. She looks beautiful! I wish them well!

    • Lillylizard says:

I think the real wedding dress is still to come, next week they have the religious ceremony on Lake Maggiore. My money is on ‘Hello’ covering it.

      • Maria says:

Hope Hello covers it. Tatiana has the most money of any of them. 2B inherited from her Columbian grandfather. Lucky Andrea.

  22. Shelley says:

Very budget Blake Lively…I don’t see the fuss.

    • Patty says:

If anything Blake Lively is a budget Beatrice. Beatrice actually seems okay based on the gossip I’ve read. She does have an interesting and unique (dare I say great) casual style that someone like Blake Lively would kill for.

  23. ToodySezHey says:

So basically, money married more money

  24. Lillylizard says:

Very stylish lady, reminds me of Carolyn Bessette. The best dress was the divine chiffon Valentino she wore to the after party.

    http://www.newmyroyals.com/2015/07/wedding-of-pierre-casiraghi-and.html

  25. raincoaster says:

FYI Beatrice is also an experienced journalist. She was working on a documentary about daughters of the Mafia, but I think the project is in limbo. I’ve looked up some of her stuff, and she’s good.

Nobody ever mentions this. It’s not a Jackie O Book Editor sinecure, either.

  26. Anne says:

They make quite a dashing couple, don’t they. A bit boring, almost, in terms of how perfectly they fit into that “classically aristocratic” mold. I must say, though, I’m surprised by her choice of gown here. I wasn’t expecting a pink hippy look from her, even if it was only for a civil ceremony. They do look happy together. Good for them.
