Ivana Trump claimed her then-husband Donald Trump raped her in 1989

Warning: the following story is extremely disturbing and NSFW.

At some point, I really tapped out of the Donald Trump coverage. I was eating lunch and watching MSNBC and they were doing live coverage of one of his speeches and I got so frustrated with his stupidity that I actually got sick to my stomach. I know HuffPo is covering Trump’s presidential run as “Entertainment” and I continue to see a lot of gossip/entertainment sites covering Trump as an oddity, a celebrity, a political dilettante.

Maybe this story will be the sea change that we’ve needed. It’s not even that Trump needs to do something “new” to get people to turn away – we just needed to examine Trump’s past and we’ll find enough there to be disgusted and appalled. Which is just what the Daily Beast did – they did a story on allegations Ivana Trump made against Donald Trump in 1989, while they were married. Ivana claimed that her then-husband violently assaulted her and raped her.

Ivana Trump once used “rape” to describe an incident between them in 1989. She later said she felt “violated” by the experience. Michael Cohen, special counsel at The Trump Organization, defended his boss, saying, “You’re talking about the frontrunner for the GOP, presidential candidate, as well as a private individual who never raped anybody. And, of course, understand that by the very definition, you can’t rape your spouse. It is true,” Cohen added. “You cannot rape your spouse. And there’s very clear case law.”

Ivana Trump’s assertion of “rape” came in a deposition—part of the early ’90s divorce case between the Trumps, and revealed in the 1993 book Lost Tycoon: The Many Lives of Donald J. Trump. The book, by former Texas Monthly and Newsweek reporter Harry Hurt III, described a harrowing scene. After a painful scalp reduction surgery to remove a bald spot, Donald Trump confronted his then-wife, who had previously used the same plastic surgeon.

“Your f–king doctor has ruined me!” Trump cried. What followed was a “violent assault,” according to Lost Tycoon. Donald held back Ivana’s arms and began to pull out fistfuls of hair from her scalp, as if to mirror the pain he felt from his own operation. He tore off her clothes and unzipped his pants.

“Then he jams his penis inside her for the first time in more than sixteen months. Ivana is terrified… It is a violent assault,” Hurt writes. “According to versions she repeats to some of her closest confidantes, ‘he raped me.’”

Following the incident, Ivana ran upstairs, hid behind a locked door, and remained there “crying for the rest of night.” When she returned to the master bedroom in the morning, he was there.

“As she looks in horror at the ripped-out hair scattered all over the bed, he glares at her and asks with menacing casualness: ‘Does it hurt?’” Hurt writes. Donald Trump has previously denied the allegation. In the book, he denies having had the scalp reduction surgery.

“It’s obviously false,” Donald Trump said of the accusation in 1993, according to Newsday. “It’s incorrect and done by a guy without much talent… He is a guy that is an unattractive guy who is a vindictive and jealous person.”

[From The Daily Beast]

While this story is horrific – and Ivana still maintained that this incident occurred even years after the fact – the fact that the Daily Beast decided to run a story on these accusations from 20 years ago has caused Trump’s lawyer Michael Cohen to go crazy. This is what Michael Cohen said ON THE RECORD to the Daily Beast on Monday:

“It’s not the word that you’re trying to make it into,” Cohen told The Daily Beast, saying Ivana Trump was talking about how “she felt raped emotionally… She was not referring to it [as] a criminal matter, and not in its literal sense, though there’s many literal senses to the word.” Cohen added that there is no such thing, legally, as a man raping his wife. “You cannot rape your spouse,” he said. “There’s very clear case law.”

That is not true. In New York, there used to be a so-called marital rape exemption to the law. It was struck down in 1984. Trump’s lawyer then changed tactics, lobbing insults and threatening a lawsuit if a story was published.

“I will make sure that you and I meet one day while we’re in the courthouse. And I will take you for every penny you still don’t have. And I will come after your Daily Beast and everybody else that you possibly know. So I’m warning you, tread very f–king lightly, because what I’m going to do to you is going to be f–king disgusting. You understand me? You write a story that has Mr. Trump’s name in it, with the word ‘rape,’ and I’m going to mess your life up… for as long as you’re on this frickin’ planet… you’re going to have judgments against you, so much money, you’ll never know how to get out from underneath it… there is nothing reasonable about you wanting to write a story about somebody’s usage of the word ‘rape,’ when she’s talking [about how] she didn’t feel emotionally satisfied. Though there’s many literal senses to the word, if you distort it, and you put Mr. Trump’s name there onto it, rest assured, you will suffer the consequences. So you do whatever you want. You want to ruin your life at the age of 20? You do that, and I’ll be happy to serve it right up to you. I think you should go ahead and you should write the story that you plan on writing. I think you should do it. Because I think you’re an idiot. And I think your paper’s a joke, and it’s going to be my absolute pleasure to serve you with a $500 million lawsuit, like I told [you] I did it to Univision.”

[From The Daily Beast]

OMG. This lawyer is… just as unhinged as Donald Trump. Is that the rule for working with Trump? And if the accusations against Donald Trump were false when the book was published in 1993, why didn’t Trump sue (and win) then? The whole Daily Beast story is worth a read too, because they detail Trump’s very sketchy statements on sexual assault and rape over the years (spoiler: he loves to blame the victims of sexual assault for their assault).

    • belle de jour says:

(agree. and an aside: wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if we are seeing the machinations of the GOP going into threatened panic/damage control mode with this ‘sudden’ disclosure re the candidate they want not at all.)

If this man’s political career continues to prosper, the United States will become a laughing stock. The U.S. President’s role is central to international stability and to the fight against global extremism. This man is patently unfit for any sort of high office – or even low office- and needs to be relegated to the margins where he belongs.

Horrible. Just horrible. I wish justice could be served.

No, he’ll just get another bump in the polls because the “liberal media” is playing “gotcha journalism” by reporting the truth.

  3. Shambles says:

It absolutely horrifies me that there are actual people who think this man should be president. It makes me physically ill. The garbage that comes out of his lawyer’s mouth says it all. This is the man Trump chooses to represent him— one who says you can’t rape your spouse, period point blank. I say you can rape anyone who doesn’t consent, period point blank. Ugh. I need a drink already.

Cannot stand the man. President? What a joke.

I’m waiting for Bernie Sanders to get the media attention he deserves. Watched the most recent video of his campaign stop in Louisiana on the weekend and his Meet The Press NBC segment last Sunday. I am so impressed. He is a breath of fresh air and the anti-Trump. Smart, principled and focused on the issues at hand.

So over politics of the personal. So over Trump.

Do his supporters even realize that trump would deem them to be to unattractive to vote?

  4. kri says:

I almost said “This is it for him, he’s done”, but then I remembered the world women live in. We have to have our attacks validated by males and put our faces on magazine covers and hope that someone will believe us-maybe. And we live in a first world country. I cannot bear the thought of women in under-developed countries going through rape/abuse daily. I would punch him in his fat, stupid face if I could. Sick. I’m going to go running now and try not barf.

  5. GreenBunny says:

I love the fact that a lawyer is schooled on the law by the reporter. You can rape a spouse, even I know that. How does the lawyer not know that?! Based on his rant after he’s told he’s wrong, he sounds like Donald Trump disguised as a lawyer.

Oh and Donald Trump is disgusting. This just proves what most of us already know, that he’s a misogynistic bully that thinks nothing of raping and assaulting women to make himself feel big.

    • senna says:

Between “you can’t rape a spouse” and “but it wasn’t rape-rape! It was emotional rape!” I felt like I might spontaneously combust reading that rant. I feel as though we’re in a media contest of seeing how many terrible things Donald can say and do, past and present, by himself and through his lawyers, before he’s forced out of the race.

    • Ronda says:

in some countries its still legal and in a lot of western countries it was legal for a very long time. most only started recently, like in the 80s and 90s. (i know 20 and 30 yaers ago but its crazy that probably most of your fathers could have raped our mothers and it wouldnt have been illegal)

But whats also very dumb from a legal pov is that the lawyer even mentions it. its like he is admitting it. He could have stayed with “it did not happen” but he tries to justify it by saying it happened but its not illegal.

    • Soundspretty says:

Because he’s getting paid big bucks to defend this scumbag. I hope he doesn’t actually feel that way, but I have a feeling Trump hires people who think exactly like him.

    • FLORC says:

      Right!
This is disturbing. Trump and his lawyers thoughts on this is disturbing.

And at any point 1 party wants to stop everyone stops. To not stop is losing consent and that becomes rape..
My guess is the lawyer made an argument on soapboxing.Argue a point in such a grandstanding way and hope people don’t listen and get swept up in it all.

    • Miffy says:

Seriously! Clearly this lawyer is worth every angry cent when he hasn’t brushed up on law since the early 80’s apparently.

Rape within marriage not being rape. FFS. It’s like saying you can’t really punch someone in the face because they’re your spouse so it doesn’t count. Horrific. Just horrific.

    • Mare says:

And yet she stayed with him and his money.

  6. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I find this very easy to believe. And his lawyer should have his spouse rip his hair out of his head and sexually assault him to see if that’s the equivalent of “not being emotionally satisfied” during what was not rape because the assailant was his spouse. Both of them should then be stripped, smeared with honey and chained to an anthill forever after I walk across their faces in stilettos. How is this man a serious candidate for president? I’m sick to my stomach, too. THIS is why so many women in the world are beaten, sexually assaulted, marginalized and underpaid. Because people like Donald Trump and his lawyer exist and think the way they do. I don’t have words for my disgust with both of them and anyone who would entertain the thought of voting for him for one second.

    • Kiddo says:

Trump believes in lesser human beings, usually tied to socioeconomic status, gender and apparently skin color. He seems to be the closest thing to Hitler that we have seen in a candidate for leadership. In that case, however, I don’t believe Hitler was ever accused of rape.
The fact that he is popular with so many in this country is absolutely terrifying to me.

      • littlemissnaughty says:

Yes, this. He once said that he measures his worth as a person in money, i.e. his wealth is his barometer for who he is and, quite literally, how much he is worth. That’s really all anyone ever needs to know about that man. Because following that logic, 99.9% of the world’s population are worth much much less than he is. In every respect. In my experience, people with this attitude of superiority are capable of pretty much anything. Give them power and they don’t even have to do the dirty work.

This story is so specific, it’s hard to believe it’s not true.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Kiddo, that is such a good and terrifying point. I know people are always comparing other people to Hitler, but your comparison is chillingly accurate. As littlemissnaughty said, he sees people as only as valuable as they are rich. Ugh. Frightening.

      • Ankhel says:

Kiddo, Hitler kept his pretty young niece, Geli Raubal, literally under guard in his own apartment in Munich for years. It started while she was in her teens. He drove away her suitors and forcefully kept her from leaving him. She shot herself. Hitler hung up several paintings of her after her death and called her “the only woman he ever loved.” There was a lot of talk in Munich about their relationship, Hitler’s people had to comment on it. So no, Hitler wins the bad boy contest. As usual. Really no need for comparisons.

      • Kiddo says:

I knew about the niece. Not sure anything was consummated, but it certainly was beyond weird. BTW, mentioning Hitler in this context is not ringing the bell for cause of shame for Germans. AT the beginning I doubt they knew or TRULY considered what a monster he would turn out to be, while he was holding pep rallies for the country.

    • Shambles says:

“Both of them should then be stripped, smeared with honey and chained to an anthill forever after I walk across their faces in stilettos.”

If this wasn’t in response to something so serious and horrifying, I would totally be turned on right now. You go, GNAT. You go.

    • noway says:

The problem with Hitler comparisons is it really does take a legitimate argument over the top. Sure Trump may have some ideas that are misogynistic and racist, but he doesn’t recommend the extermination of an entire race or religion of people. People on both sides need to stay away from this argument as in most cases it is wholly inaccurate. The more people attack Trump with these kind of arguments, the more likely people feel he is being unjustly attacked and that just ups his profile and popularity. This is why all these lower tiered candidates are trying anything outrageous just to get noticed.

      • littlemissnaughty says:

He doesn’t recommend it because he knows it’s not considered PC. I’m joking. Mostly.

But yes, the constant Hitler comparisons are problematic although I would say not necessarily (only) for the reasons you mention. When someone is compared to Hitler, Stalin, or any dictator/mass murderer, the problem is that the other side then ignores the argument entirely because of the hyperbole. I would do the same. Also, comparing horrible people never works, most of them are horrible in a unique way. I know why people reach for the comparisons and sometimes I’m tempted as well (not with Hitler, I’m German, I would never) but not only is it insulting to those who suffered under that particular person, it’s also simply never helpful to the conversation.

      • Kitten says:

Since when has Trump ever cared about being PC? 😉

      • Kiddo says:

Fair enough. But I sincerely feel that he is capable of VERY terrible things, and the following behind him, shows the populace may be as well. When you begin your platform of ‘othering’ people from the get-go, that is deeply problematic.

      • Kiddo says:

Adding, my use actually wasn’t hyperbolic. I see parallels in personalities. Because something terrible happened once or twice to people, doesn’t mean it won’t happen again. You need to look for signs before it’s too late.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Good points, Noway. I just meant that he doesn’t see people as human beings, and considers himself superior with more right to exist than other, lesser mortals. And when you start with that premise, who knows what you’re capable of if given a free rein? There is a scary group of people in this country right now. Angry, stupid and mean – feeling that their “way of life” (when they could say the n word and rape without any consequences) is threatened. I think that’s who DT appeals to, and I don’t think they should be taken lightly. But I get your point about overusing the Hiltler comparison.

      • doofus says:

“Angry, stupid and mean – feeling that their “way of life” (when they could say the n word and rape without any consequences) is threatened.”

yeah, that’s where the whole “take back our country” and “make America great again” comes in. “take back” to the time when women, black folk and gays knew their place. make it “great” again, when we could use racial, ethnic and religious slurs and misogynistic language out in the open.

      • littlemissnaughty says:

Kiddo, I absolutely agree that he is probably capable of awful things given enough power and this attitude of superiority – on this level – is definitely a bad sign. And I don’t even want to think about how he became a billionaire. Somehow I suspect he’s ruined a large number of people along the way and has possibly done worse. Personality-wise I can see the parallels you’re talking about but whatever he’s done, he hasn’t gased 6 million Jews and set three continents on fire. I just always balk at the Hitler references or comparisons because most people use them out of laziness, they just can’t be bothered to lay out their argument so they yell Hitler. I’m not saying you did that, it’s just that only Hitler was Hitler. As I said, as a German I cringe every time.

I hope somebody wipes the floor with that man and shaves his head in his sleep. But he’ll be fine no matter how this little stunt ends. So depressing.

      • Kiddo says:

I’ve never used Hitler comparisons, outside of Trump. It’s not my default go-to drop extreme argument. I’m serious in saying there is something about the ego-maniacal personality, the over the top posturing, the nationalism, the weird facial expressions, the ‘othering’ of people right out of the gate, the blame of the economic situation on other people, that I find genuinely eery. I’ve been around the internet long enough to know about Godwin’s law, hyperbole, how this might offend people, but my comparison was actually sincere, not a lazy, “You’re a moron, you like Nazis” kind of a flippant comment, that the internet is known for. Who am I supposed to compare him to if that is legitimately who he reminds me of?

      • littlemissnaughty says:

Kiddo, there are plenty of politicians who fit the bill, the only aspect that is missing most of the time is the foaming at the mouth thing. Because THAT is something only Trump brings. And I hate to say it but when it comes to politics, Trump is dumber than Hitler. The man was many things but his strategy was pretty damn good. Trump doesn’t know how to judge people so he goes over the top. Within the context of the times, Hitler didn’t.

    • Who ARE these people? says:

      Fire ants, too.

    • Miffy says:

‘ THIS is why so many women in the world are beaten, sexually assaulted, marginalized and underpaid.’
Don’t forget about all of it probably being our own fault too! We clearly just ask for it.

  7. Pinky says:

Are we sure Trump isn’t, in fact, his own lawyer? Because all the speech patterns, tantrums, misogyny, and fool-client things fit!

    • lisa2 says:

I had to laugh at that outburst.. because it did sound exactly like Donald Trump.

Well let’s see how the public reacts.. I’m going to wait for that. We have had many stories in the press about abuse of women. I’m waiting to see how it all falls when it is Donald Trump.

also waiting for his press conference or response. Should be epic

    • Miffy says:

I did think the same thing. Is Trump’s ‘team’ just Trump in different wigs? I’m waiting for an outburst from Trump’s PR guru ‘Jose’ (who will be Trump in a sombrero, poncho and fake moustache) talking about all he’s done for the hispanic community.

If not, I’d imagine a dinner party with these lads must be a blast. A terrifying, nightmarish blast.

      • Ankhel says:

Oh no- what if Trumpism is infective? Think of all the babies he will kiss during his campaign!

  8. Toni says:

Cohen is getting paid. End of story. So many people sell their souls for GREEN. I’m just wondering if Trumps CURRENT wife is going to stay with him for long………….unless she decides to stay sold herself. I remember that when Jesse Jackson 1st ran for president in the 80s that the womanizing stories came out …….but reporters were also threatened violent repercussions if they reported it. And 20 years later after that………..

  9. Mikeyangel says:

    Disgusting human being.

  10. Jackson says:

Oh. My. God. This whole story is insane. Infukkingsane. This is someone speaking on the record for the frontrunner of the GOP presidential ticket. And the whole Ivana story is completely horrible, and completely believable, to me.
I have faith that if this POS is still around when debate time rolls around that he will show what a complete loon he is, with no real plan, no specifics, no real grasp of any foreign or domestic issues. However….a part of me fears that his idiotic answers and blowhard, simplistic ‘solutions’ to complex matters will resonate with a frighteningly large number of voters. I honestly will pray and work to have anyone but this man elected if it comes down to it. Literally any of the other viable candidates would be a better choice than him.

  11. mytbean says:

… and I know people who actually think Trump is a good candidate. On days I really dwell on that fact it takes me down into a spiral of depression and lost hope for Americans.

Politics aside – Cohen is… there isn’t an adequate word to describe his level of ignorant douchebaggery. He actually believes that there is no such thing as spousal rape. And, we’re taking a teeny geisha girl step over to the idea that Trump probably shares this exact mentality too.

    Nasty.

  12. noway says:

Hasn’t anyone heard yet, but thank god polls are not votes. Be happy Mr. Trump for now and let’s hope that as has happened a lot lately the polls are just wrong.

Also, sorry to tell you, Mr. Cohen the “lawyer” a spouse can rape another spouse, and even if legally you can’t prosecute criminally it doesn’t matter. Ask Bill Cosby if you don’t believe me.

  13. Mispronounced Name Dropper says:

He probably wants to be President so he can add murderer to his list of accomplishments.

  14. Aussie girl says:

Well his lawyer sounds like trump and him are on the same page when it comes to verbally communication. The verbal shit that falls out of trump’s mouth is cringe worthy, like I’m seriously feel like I’m watching a comedy sketch. Can you even fathom trump running a country and dealing with his and other countries issues and the press statements he would make!!!

  15. kibbles says:

If it took 30 years and 35 women to take down Bill Cosby, then I doubt this one allegation from an ex-wife will have much of an affect on Donald Trump’s career. He will never become president, but his career as a celebrity will be strong as ever. Anyone who seriously wants to vote for Trump in the presidential election will not care about these allegations.

    • Soundspretty says:

True. Except Billy Cosby didn’t go around putting himself in the spotlight and making an ass of himself. I hope this story and his “campaign” absolutely ruins him.

      • meme says:

No, he just had a hit TV show and raped/drugged, what? 35 women? He’s a serial rapist.

      • PhenomenalWoman says:

Yes, Cosby did. Have you never heard any of his “motivational” speeches to black people? That’s what Hannibal Burress called him out on. That’s what started the whole thing.

    • Neah23 says:

Don’t be so quick to judge its was Ivana who brought Trump to his knees and crippled him financially when they split. It took him years to rebuild his empire and even then it still not as strong and he has filed for bankruptcy multiple times after that.

  16. bettyrose says:

Mygawd that was detailed. And instead of denying it he has some legal jagoff recite law from the 19th century? But yeah I agree that this won’t phase Trump supporters.

    • Ronda says:

“And instead of denying it he has some legal jagoff recite law from the 19th century? ”

that made me wonder too. its basically like admitting it. with all that money he should be able to get a smarter lawyer.

    • justagirl says:

Exactly. Though I guess he thinks his original non-denial still stands “it’s obviously false” – how is it obvious? And then he attacked the author: unattractive, vindictive, jealous, without much talent.

Oh, I get it, the narcissistic guy with scalp surgery to fix a bald spot is attractive & talented, and therefore “obviously” could not rape anyone.

      • Who ARE these people? says:

        I know, right?

The image of them tugging at his scalp…ow, that has got to hurt.

        Good.

      • doofus says:

“And then he attacked the author”

it’s what he does whenever someone criticizes his position on something or something he said.

        it’s his go-to…”loser”, “dummy”, “ugly” etc…

  17. EM says:

This Cohen guy is a total moron. Ignorant as. Rape turns on the absence of sexual consent, not whether or not someone is your spouse [as a defence – there is no defence to rape].

    • jwoolman says:

Yes, I remember when the laws were changed to allow prosecution for marital rape. It was in response to the real problem of women being raped by husbands. It was still rape before the law was changed, they just couldn’t take the guy to court. Previous laws had basically made women the property of their husbands when it came to sexual activity. If he wanted it, they had to allow it and he could apply force if needed. Sounds like rape to me.

There were also laws that allowed a man to beat his wife, sometimes with certain restrictions such as the size of the stick. Women were definitely in the second class citizen category for a long time in this country and others, and still are in many places.

I can’t imagine a competent lawyer not knowing about the laws against marital rape. The Donald had better wonder what else his lawyer doesn’t know about.

  18. lassie says:

    Let’s do a tally:

    Piss off minority voters- check
    Piss off veteran voters- check
    Piss off women voters- check

There’s not a whole lot of constituents left, Donny.

    • Viv says:

He’s still got the all-important angry white men voters.

    • justagirl says:

Sadly there are still people who think he represents the self-made American Dream, and would therefore be good for the economy.

They usually aren’t aware of his inherited wealth, multiple bankruptcies, and sketchy business practices. Combined with sexism, racism, a dash of rape-victim-blaming misogyny, anger issues and celebrity, one can only hope he gets shown the door soon enough.

  19. MAC says:

I hope his EGO gets all the dirt pulled up on him. Thats is what happens when you want to run for president. I live in a rural farming area and even the repubs down here do not want him even running for president. He is being talked about but by them saying negative things about the fact that he actually thinks he can be considered as a serious candidate. As for me I am unsure if I will even vote. (please do not hang me out to dry). I will wait and see what my actual choices end up being. For me neither party represents what I believe in. Fracking is not ok. The human being who runs for president and talks about environmental issues doesn’t seem to exist. And congress is hopeless in its current state.

    • Lily says:

I am around a lot of conservatives, and I have not heard anyone say they want him to run. I see posts on Facebook of articles about him, but no one says anything, so I don’t know if they are posting it as support or not.
I have seen one person semi support him, and he was really just saying it would be interesting to see some of the other candidates talk about the issues Trump would bring up. Some people feel like he is voicing things that others won’t, and that has value. I don’t think anyone wants him to get the nomination.
I think he is a long term dirt bag, but even this all seems crazy. I would expect him tit rest the office with more respect. He is so trashy, and I think it is so stupid to disregard arguments or questions because someone is unattractive. That is literally preschool level debate.

      • Chichi says:

I’m pretty sure he is doing the job he is supposed to do……make a certain JB (not Justin Bieber. although at this rate I cant see why not) more palatable. Nobody is talking about how problematic JB is, which is frankly perfect for JBs campaign. The only problem may be that Trump is such an egomaniac he may actually run as an Independent and take the misogynists, the racists and other dumb voters who would otherwise vote JB with him.

    • kcarp says:

I live in a kind of rural area of Texas, 98% of the votes in the last election was Republican. With that being said I do not know anyone who takes him serious.

Then again all of the people that I know do not fall into the stereotypical Right Wing Nut Jobs that this demographic is portrayed to be.

Imagine this all of these people vote Republican yet none have a problem with gay marriage, abortions, or pathways to citizenship. I guess that doesn’t fit the narrative of the Confederate Flag waiving crowd the media likes to portray.

  20. AnotherJen says:

Weird she kept her rapists last name and invited him to her wedding.

    • PhenomenalWoman says:

Is this your attempt at victim blaming? She has children with the man; maybe she kept their name and not his.

    • Sally J. Freedman says:

So what exactly are you saying? That you don’t believe her?

    • Belle Epoch says:

ANOTHERJEN has a point. Ivana backtracked in a major way about the rape. She stuck with Trump for years and was furious with Marla Maples for “stealing” him. It’s impossible to know if she loved him, or feared him, or loved his money, or what. Personally I’m sure she was raped and it was absolutely not her fault – but she also agreed to downplay it.

“[O]n one occasion during 1989, Mr. Trump and I had marital relations in which he behaved very differently toward me than he had during our marriage. As a woman, I felt violated, as the love and tenderness, which he normally exhibited towards me, was absent. I referred to this as a ‘rape,’ but I do not want my words to be interpreted in a literal or criminal sense.”

      • Ankhel says:

It’s a fact that women with abusive husbands usually don’t leave right away, and often even defends their SO’s behavior. They might even contradict themselves if he takes offense at something they’ve said in public. It’s just easier that way, especially if there’s kids in the picture.

      • Ange says:

Who knows what Trump and his team did behind the scenes to ensure Ivana’s cooperation in downplaying. Clearly he’s not above sending his guys out to do some intimidating.

  21. Sam says:

Here’s my question – why is everyone getting super outraged over the “rape” portion of what she said and not the rest? She also says that he pinned her down and ripped chunks of hair out of her head. That’s a pretty grievous assault if I’ve ever heard one. If he had just done that he would be a hideous domestic abuser. I get that the rape angle is more scandalous, but jeez, there’s so much nastiness in that statement it’s sort of hard to begin to parse it all out.

  22. Tippipippi says:

Medical records would prove if he didn’t have the surgery as he claims. His lawyer seems very out of touch to think that the law still refuses to recognise marital rape, he needs to catch up on a few decades, society has made progress in that respect.

People throw lot of false allegations around during divorce cases, tensions are emotionally high and people can be very vindictive so without actual proof, Ivana coming out now and saying yes he did that or a history of similar behaviour towards women I’m not going to assume him guilty.

He could be but people should be asking his ex wife (all of them actually) for comment.

    • FingerBinger says:

Medical records can only be released with consent. Trump is a rich he could have had those records destroyed.

  23. Alex says:

I want this guy to win the GOP nomination SO BADLY. Seriously this is the greatest trainwreck since Sarah Palin and the birther movement

    • Anastasia says:

I want him to run as an independent and siphon off enough Repub votes that the Dem wins!

    • doofus says:

no, you don’t. there are enough stupid people out there that they would vote for him as long as he’s the GOP candidate. the so-called “yellow dog” voters…meaning, they’d even vote for a yellow dog if it was repping their party because they are loyal to a fault. I don’t mind him running, even as a third party (as Anastasia put it) but a big NO NO NO to the GOP nom.

true story…I have an old high school friend who is also a FB friend and she STILL believes that Obama was born in Kenya…her latest “proof” are the JOKES that Obama made during his speech in Kenya. “He admitted it!!!!!”

UGH…that’s the mentality/intelligence of the person who would vote for tRUMP.

      • Alex says:

honestly there are enough Republicans that would absolutely vote blue if he gets the noms. obviously 3rd party would be the best case scenario but I already have conservative friends pulling their hair out over trump LOL

  24. Kori says:

    1) It’s pretty odd that Trump isn’t denying he viciously physically assaulted his wife (thehair pulling out) just the rape allegations. But that physical assault is brutal to read. 2) his lawyer is nutso and obviously not up on modern case law. 3) If you didn’t do it, why not say something like ‘rape is horrible, I would never do anything like that to any woman, let alone my wife and mother of my children’. Instead they go right for the personal attacks on the writer (jealous, bitter) instead of the allegations themselves.

    • tracking says:

He didn’t deny anything, just asserted a husband can’t rape a wife. Stupid, vile man.

    • PhenomenalWoman says:

Well, if he doesn’t deny the rape allegations, how is he any better than the Mexicans who, according to him, only come here to rape our women and pillage our resources?

  25. meme says:

Wow, Mr. Trump has touched a nerve. It’s going to take a lot more than Ivana to take him down. The man didn’t get this far by being “stupid” and I give him kudos for actually saying what he really believes unlike a lot of politicians who just say what they think the voters want to hear.

Bill Clinton was accused of rape too.

    • lisa2 says:

      Wow.. 😣

    • noway says:

Ivana didn’t release this statement. It came from a reporter about a divorce deposition in 1989. Just so you know Ivana did take him down once in their divorce.

Part of how he got this far was by using the system. Four of his companies filed for bankruptcy protection, all after his divorce from Ivana, which allowed him to restructure and lower his debt. He isn’t always the winner people think. It really is a case of the rich have different rules than the rest of us. Never understand why people in the middle or lower gravitate to the obscenely wealthy, especially when their ideas only benefit wealthy people. You do realize he inherited a lot of his wealth, and yes he created more, but it always easier when you start wealthy to begin with.

    • Who ARE these people? says:

Oh no, not the old “at least he’s not a lying politician”argument.

Clinton was accused of sexual harassment (if memory serves). Bad enough but …

In any case 2 wrongs don’t make a right, Trump isn’t running against Bill Clinton, and if he were actually smart he would be a self-made man who kept his money instead of a rich man’s son who wasted his money. He’s a bad-tempered lout and grifter with a massive ego.

      • meme says:

Well, he IS saying what he believes even though it make be unpopular, politically incorrect or insensitive. He ISN’T a politician, he’s a business man. This is his first foray into politics so, yes, he’s not just another lying politician.

2 wrongs don’t make a right, but Bill Clinton became president even though he was accused of rape and sexual harassment. Correct?

      • The Original G says:

Wow. I despair forthe US when a rude bully making racist idiotic pronouncements is considered an honest voice. I guess there’s a lot of ambient undirected anger around and he’s a mouthpiece for some of it.

No, he’s not a lying politician. He’s a lying businessman.

      • kcarp says:

@meme yes there were several women that have accused Bill Clinton. The difference is Bill Clinton is treated like your handsy uncle you might not leave your 21 year old daughter alone with.

Bill Clinton was or is friends with jeff epstein the convicted sex offender. I guess we could say this is not relevant because he is not running BUT in most cases the spouse of the candidate is vetted.

    • jwoolman says:

The rape accusations against Clinton made no sense and were clearly false if you look at the details. He was actually quite passive, sleazy enough to inappropriately ask for sex but never pursued it if the woman said no. So sexual harassment is a more sensible charge, since he was bothering women who never showed any interest in him that way. Monica Lewinsky was clearly engaging in consensual sexual behavior and already had a history of using such relationships to acquire power indirectly through men. She made it very clear in the hearings that she was not a victim, which I thought was to her credit (the politicians were trying to paint her as one, but she held her ground quite well). She was deluded to ever think he was going to divorce his wife and marry her, but she was not forced into anything.

      • kcarp says:

Actually I should clarify Bill Clinton didn’t rape anyone he just sexually harassed women, and took advantage of his position of power.

      • Otaku Fairy says:

I wonder how much Trump pays his political allies/stans to defend him using deflection online, and whether or not his defenders will actually vote for him in 2016?

      • kcarp says:

That’s hilarious. I’m no trump defender. He is a clown.

      • Otaku Fairy says:

My comment was directed at meme, but I wanted it to appear at the bottom.

  26. Mispronounced Name Dropper says:

What do the Republican voters who frequent this site think of him?

  27. FingerBinger says:

Ivana hasn’t denied the story ,there must be something to it.

    • noway says:

It is from a court deposition from her divorce, so she was under oath. Her best bet all around is to just stay quiet, and I guess that is what she is going to do.

    • meme says:

If you look at other posts, she retracted her story.

    • The Original G says:

She signed a non disclosure agreement as part her divorce settlement. That speaks for itself in this case.

  28. Kathy says:

My very wealthy (and supposedly sophisticated) aunt thinks Trump “actually speaks the truth” and is supportive of him.
Why? Why is he the front runner?
What is this world coming to?

  29. OhDear says:

And he STILL hasn’t dropped out yet. Geez.

    • PrettyBlueFox says:

As of right now he has no reason to drop out. He’s doing well in the polls (weep for the nation) and his already over-sized ego is being regularly fed by all the media attention. He won’t drop out until his poll numbers plummet, he loses some primaries, or he gets distracted by something shiny.

  30. Bridget says:

I don’t think I have ever seen a human being repeatedly humiliate himself the way Donald Trump has during this “presidential run” – and then respond with anger like that’s going to help. This fool is actually spending money on this race and just keeps doubling down.

And real slick lawyer. Who puts that stuff on the record?

  31. Suzy from Ontario says:

I could totally see him forcing himself on someone. He’s a bully, period. He thinks he’s never wrong and he’s just not that bright.

  32. Tessa says:

Just as Trump himself said: ““I mean somebody’s doing it!… Who’s doing the raping?”

    • word says:

How ironic huh? Didn’t he say “The Mexicans are doing the raping”. Racist piece of sh*t. Deport Trump !

The crazy part in all of this is that Trump actually has some supporters. Why would anyone want to vote for this a$$hole?

  33. Firebomber says:

I think Trump says what other people think but dont say. Its scary to think guys like him and Jeb Bush among others have influence and a possibility of becoming the President of the US. Canada has Harper who is just as bad but there are those who will vote for him. People are like sheep. They want to be led by people who come off as strong despite being douche bags.

    • Who ARE these people? says:

All the attention given to Trump is giving candidates like Scott Walker more time to amass the money and connections they need and less time to screw up in public. As usual the media is taking its eye off the ball.

      • Genny says:

Don’t worry. The pissed off students in Wisconsin haven’t forgotten Scott Walker. Eff that dude.

      • Who ARE these people? says:

Good to know. Now, you guys have to mobilize and be stronger than the voting bloc that elected him in the first place. And help students in other states too.

  34. Miss Jupitero says:

    *Headdesk*

I really have to wonder just how much more of this sh*t people are going to swallow. If the Republicans nominate this abomination, they deserve to come to a complete end as a party. I am aghast at how many Americans like what he is saying. Makes me want to move to Mars….

  35. miasys says:

I usually turn off the tv if I see his face & avoid reading articles about him. He’s repellent on every possible level & I hate feeding the trolls. But this? I can’t even. His sole comeback to allegations of raping his wife is to argue that you can’t rape your spouse? America, you have been served official notice (again) that this dude is a total lunatic. Seriously, I think he has a legit medical condition. Besides being an asshole.

  36. Liberty says:

Okay — whhhhhaaaat? She just issued a statement downplaying this story and supporting him for President. Per CNN, she says the story is “Totally without merit.”

    ??????????????? !!!!

    • Ronda says:

      here is that statement:
In a statement obtained by CNN, Ivana Trump said the Daily Beast story “is totally without merit.”

“I have recently read some comments attributed to me from nearly 30 years ago at a time of very high tension during my divorce from Donald. The story is totally without merit. Donald and I are the best of friends and together have raised three children that we love and are very proud of. I have nothing but fondness for Donald and wish him the best of luck on his campaign. Incidentally, I think he would make an incredible president,” Ivana Trump said in the statement, which was verified by the Trump campaign.

      • Brittney B says:

Why don’t I believe that she wrote that statement? …or that she truly believes the sentiment behind it?

He probably “paid her off” YEARS ago. Legal and financial threats seem to be business as usual for this scum.

  37. Doc says:

Was Biff in Back to the Future Part II (the dystopian future where Hill Valley is owned by him), modeled after DT?

Horrified at the experience Ivana had. Victims of abuse in abusive relationships can stay in them for a very long time before they even come to terms with their experience. It could have been years before she was able to even verbalize coherently what she experienced and admitted to herself how horrific it was.

  38. Otaku Fairy says:

This is a man who once said about rape, “What do you expect when you put men and women together?” That’s kind of telling about his attitude- that he views rape as a natural, expected thing for a man to do when he’s around a woman. Also, in Ivana’s statements afterward, she never denies that that assault happened- she just softens it so as not to flat-out say that her husband raped her. I believe it happened, and that she feels some kind of pressure to not make waves. It’s sad that in the 21st century there are still men- and people in general- who honestly believe that being married to someone should make it legally and ethically acceptable to force sex acts on that person- that it’s not rape just because they’re married. Trump’s vile lawyer isn’t alone in his 1800’s way of thinking, but the law isn’t on his side anymore.

  39. I AM VOTING FOR TRUMP FOR PRESIDENT ! ! !

  40. Capepopsie says:

    Good grief!

  41. Kelly says:

I remember when the accusations were first made. What is scary is that people will still vote for him and not care.

  42. EN says:

Trump is unhinged and apparently at least 20% of Americans a (my estimate for how many would vote for him) are as well.

  43. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

“Tread lightly”… The lawyer thinks he’s Walter White! Nice try, Cohen. No one is afraid of you.
