hmm. I like Emma, but I don’t know if this helped.

  2. lucy2 says:

Good for Emma! I like that she’s passionate about equality and makes an effort to stand up and talk about it.
I think the US has been done with Santorum for a long time.

  3. aims says:

My heart goes out to Sandra. I wish her a speedy recovery and pray that they go after the cancer with a vengeance.

  4. korra says:

O_0………….Seriously? Okay, okay I’ll try not to be dismissive about this, vague as it was. I’ll stop being mean to Emma. I’ll see where it goes.

  5. Rita says:

True equality is not mandated. It is earned. If you are good enough, you will succeed. If you want faux equality, sell your fashions to the government. Until women stop trying to get a piece of the man’s world, we will always be asking for something. Step up, start your own business and succeed or fail in a competitive market. That is what men do and the strongest and smartest survive. True failure begins with blaming your short comings on someone or something other than your own limitations.

Those who still believe in meritocracy are truly, sadly deluded.

    • Franca says:

Not even close. The circumstances someone is born in play a huge role in their life. Very very few people, if any, are entirely self made.

    • Fluff says:

I guess you’ve never heard of “white privilege” or “male privilege.”

Or equal pay for the same job.

    • Naddie says:

Earned? So, what does that say about women and other discriminated classes? I’m curious to know. The vast majority of people on “top” are white men. Are white men stronger and smarter?

    • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

      Wow, that was lame.

  6. Portia says:

I’m confused. Isn’t the #HeforShe campaign an international platform campaign? It’s spearheaded by UN, right? How is the fashion industry relevant to all the women of the world? Let’s not forget the sweatshops a lot of these fashion houses run in third world countries.

I hate to say this but so far, all Emma Watson has said and done has targeted first world feminist issues, not third world or even second world. Man, honestly, I think Angelina Jolie is the only one who really gets feminism and human rights on an international scale. Everyone else who stands up for feminism these days seems to stick to first world issues and while that is also necessary, I don’t see the need to use an international platform like UN for domestic or first world feminist issues. If this is the tone #HeforShe is setting then it smells like plain old PR and fluff feminism and I doubt it’ll make any real strides apart from some pretty words and speeches that don’t go beyond cocktail conversations and “oh yes I completely agree” head nods.

    • cholar says:

      right on Portia!
Because Emma seems truly sincere here’s hoping that she will continue to seek out educational opportunities so that she may evolve and gain a more mature and deepened understanding of feminism, social justice and equality. And like Jolie, take action towards substantive change.

      • lucy2 says:

Exactly – she’s young and just starting out on her journey, but so many people expect her to be perfect right out of the gate. I’m just happy she’s trying to put forth something positive, especially in comparison to some other young celebrities.

      • Portia says:

Except here’s the thing. She’s not researching issues on her own on Google and trying to figure out which cause to join like college students do. She’s a UN ambassador. She has access to every cause in order of priority according to first world and developing nation as well as what’s currently being implemented and the facts and figures and progress related to each feminist and human rights issue. Not to mention there are UN committees who are advising her and she has full access to them. More than half her homework is done for her. Yet she picks and chooses first world problems while standing on an international soapbox.

If first world feminism and gender issues was where she wanted to concentrate her attentions on, she could’ve picked a domestic platform or even a European one. Yet she picked an international one, spoke in front of international delegates who are from countries where women are literally objects and property with absolutely zero human rights, has the recognition and support and reach to millions and millions of young active energetic minds through social media to literally jumpstart a huge change and movement. And she picks…the fashion industry? In the fashion industry, the gender issues can be fixed from within by simply implementing a business model that equal opportunity to any gender of any sexual orientation and race and creed. It’s honestly not a severely pressing issue that needs immediate attention nor is it one that affects a large majority of people in the world. It literally affects upperclass to upper middle class. That’s a small percentage in comparison to the rest of the world.

That’s why I resent her using an international platform. Most of the world is probably going “oh good another white woman saying she’ll help us but then doesnt.” The whole thing sounds and looks shallow and superficial. I have a feeling even 7-8 years from now, she will still be focused on first world problems and people will still be going “she just started”. Whereas look at where Angelina Jolie started and kept her attention.

      • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

You freaking nailed it on both counts Portia!

      • Piecesofme says:

Yes! When Angelina Jolie was Emma Watson’s age she was a hot mess.

    • thatone says:

Did #heforshe ever achieve anything besides giving men a cookie for saying they are feminist?

  7. Blythe says:

A black and white video doesn’t make this deep. In reality, this was three minutes of people saying nothing.

  8. Esmom says:

I like Emma and to me she’s one of HW’s great beauties. WTF did Vogue do to her hair on the cover? It looks like she came in off a motorcycle in a windstorm and they didn’t even touch it up.

  9. Amelia says:

    A forced roadside vaginal search?
What fresh fuckery is this?!!! That’s completely and utterly appalling. (See The Frisky link.)
As Portia mentioned above, *this* is the kind of thing Emma should be helping draw attention to first, in my opinion anyway. Not the damn fashion industry which is maybe applicable to 5% of the population or so.

  10. Norman Bates' Mother says:

That Frisky story is awful, just awful. She must feel so violated now. Is vaginal search ever allowed in the US, under any circumstances, to be performed by cops and not a medical professional? All those cops (incl, those from the other linked article) somehow thought they were allowed to do that. It’s definitely not allowed in my country – police officers don’t even have a right to make me strip to my underwear – doesn’t matter what they’d think I’ve done. All they can do is pat my clothes in a way that would not compromise my dignity and personal freedom – and do it in a secluded place, with a neutral person of my choosing present as a witness but no onlookers. All those cops who did that should be fired and placed on the sex offender lists for the rest of their lives.

  11. Claire says:

The vaginal search is so wrong. What’s wrong with people?!

  12. Tiffany :) says:

Olsens are getting sued by 40 interns and they are so very, very screwed. The Supreme Court ruled a while back on interns (regarding Black Swan) and you have some VERY high hurdles to clear if you want to not pay someone and call them an intern. They can’t perform any task that a paid person would otherwise be doing, they have to be trained and get some kind of credit, etc.

    • lucy2 says:

It’s especially gross when a hugely successful company can’t bother to pay even minimum wage to a couple dozen interns.
We had a college student beg us for an internship this year and she offered to work for free, and my boss said no way, everyone gets paid, We’re a small business, not a multi-billion dollar company. The two we did have got paid at least $3/hour over our state minimum wage. (We finally did have a spot open up for the other girl and set it all up weeks ago, and she ended up bailing a week before she was supposed to start).

  13. Daria Morgendorffer says:

That forced vaginal search story…WTF is going on in this country? That is sexual assault.

On to less relevant things that aren’t worth the time but I have no self control… Kim’s bump: she has officially posed naked and posted a pic with a lengthy explanation on her Instagram. I personally believe she’s pregnant, but I wouldn’t put it past her that she’s dieting and practically starving herself in an effort to remain slim this time around. I wish her and her unborn son good health either way, but we all know vanity trumps all in her life and her incessant need to stuff her feet into too-small shoes and fly all over the world all while ignoring her obvious preeclampsia serves as proof that Kim doesn’t care much about her or her child’s health while she’s pregnant.

  14. WinonaRyder says:

Are people, and more importantly, women, so stupid and vacuous that they are falling for Watson’s watery “activism”. This is all PR. If she held these convictions she would not be a fashion ambassador. She would not wax lyrical about first world white problems. Bringing up racism as an afterthought does not equal activism, all this “heforshe” nonsense is about getting validation from men, not about female empowerment or equality. Are her supporters so braindead that they can’t see that? Evidently, that’s the case.

She’s is nothing to aspire to.

    • korra says:

I’m in agreement. I don’t want to be this mean, but people aren’t so bright. All these vapid celebrities get a tongue bathing for their even more banal statements. Our standards are incredibly low for intelligence and activism. But my generation plays a role in that. So many people I know just retweet or put a facebook status as their support and then believe they did something for the world.

And then you’re a hater when you criticize the idiocy of it all. Sorry. My standards are high. Because while Emma continues along this tripe I know women her age that think, analyze, actively participate, and continue to strive to figure out how they can improve their place in the world and what they can do for it. They aren’t millionaire actresses that have lived in the lap of luxury practically all their lives. Hermione would not approve.

  15. LAK says:

She’s right of course, but i’m torn because fashion is one of the few industries where women earn exponentially more than the men and I applaud. I guess I’m not as liberated on that score as I’d like to be.
