Lana Del Rey still thinks, ‘I don’t focus on feminism, I focus on the future’

Lana Del Rey

Lana Del Rey covers the Fall 2015 issue of V Magazine, and she’s photographed by Steven Klein. She’s supposedly “unretouched” on the cover, but I guess lip fillers don’t need Photoshop. Lana is starting promotion for her upcoming Honeymoon album after releasing her “High By The Beach” song. Lots of people dig the tune, but I’m not feeling it. This interview was conducted by James Franco because they’re such tight buddies lately. Both artistes, and both kinda full of themselves, so they work well together.

In these excerpts, Lana discusses why she called her album Honeymoon, which was basically because it’s a dreamy word. She also tries to clarify her existing thoughts on feminism. To recap, Lana previously said, “Whenever people bring up feminism, I’m like, god. I’m just not really that interested.” Her point was that she is more into “you know, SpaceX and Tesla.” She expands on those thoughts here:

On her feminism quotes: “The luxury we have as a younger generation is being able to figure out where we want to go from here, which is why I’ve said things like, ‘I don’t focus on feminism, I focus on the future.’ It’s not to say that there’s not more to do in that area. I’ve gotten to witness through history the evolution of so many movements and now I’m standing at the forefront of new technological movements … I’m not undermining other issues. But I feel like that’s obvious, like I shouldn’t even have to bring that up.”

Why she called her album Honeymoon: “It’s the word that sums up the ultimate dream. I mean, life is a honeymoon, y’know?? Life, love, paradise, freedoms … that’s forever.”

[From V magazine]

Lana speaks like a person who has never had to fight for her rights as woman. Lucky her, but it still behooves one to get educated about how we got here, no simply “where we want to go from here.” The rise in MRA activists illustrates exactly why we still need feminism, and why the fight will never be over. But you know, I guess thinking dreamy stuff about “intergalactic possiblities is more fun. Lana probably doesn’t mean any harm, she’s just kind of an airhead.

I just want to enjoy her music, so I try not to listen too hard when she says words. Lalalala

    • Christina says:

I’d somehow managed to never hear a single song of hers so thought I should check a few out (especially after hearing all the comparisons to Wildest Dreams).

      She. Is. Terrible.

These songs are shallow and monotone and boring and not even remotely dreamy or romantic. I mean, how on earth is this person a successful musician? Ugh.

  2. ds says:

I don’t feel like reading the interview but if she’s really into Tesla, then she should know that he was a feminist. He actually thought that it was unfair that his mother; who he considered to be a great inventor, and given the possibility even greater than him (though the kind of genius that he was is such a rarity); had not been given a chance to practice her talents because of the way society treated women back then.

    • Mia V. says:

She just namedroped someone to sound smart.

    • Lucy2 says:

Given that she mentioned it in the same sentence as Space X, I think she’s talking about Tesla motors not Nikola Tesla.

And she’s so into Space X The probably doesn’t know that the president of the company is a woman, who has a advanced degrees in mathematics and engineering, all of which likely wouldn’t have happened without…feminism.

      • ds says:

Thank’s for clarifying. I’m fascinated by Tesla as a scientist so I automatically thought about him. Shotwell’s cool though I don’t think she’d declare herself as a feminist. You’re right, Lana was probably thinking about the company, but either way; both Tesla and Tesla Motors have/had this vision of a greater world. In my book; feminism helps in creating it. I agree.

      • Naddie says:

I’m sad now. I really thought it was about Nikola Tesla (not dismissing Tesla motors).

      • lucy2 says:

I could be wrong, but it’s just my guess that she’s talking about the company and not the man. I think he was fascinating too, I’d like to read more about him.
ds, why do you think Shotwell wouldn’t consider herself a feminist?

      • ds says:

@Lucy2: I’m not sure honestly; it’s just the initial feeling I got. I read several interviews with her, and she was asked about the position of women in industry in all of them. This is a complicated subject, and I can understand her point of view, so it’s hard for me to draw a final conclusion, but I think she doesn’t really want to be questioned about it, and clarifies that it’s her work that determines her and not her sex in matters of job. That’s why I’m not sure she’d be into public display of feminism, and I get it.
If you’re interested in Tesla, there’s a book by Margaret Cheney that’s pretty good.

      • Ellie says:

I don’t think it matters who the president of Space X is, it’s still the Elon Musk show. That’s clearly what she is talking about.

When she talks about intergalactic possibilities, she’s talking about the chance to build a colony on Mars – see waitbutwhy.com for a good explanation of Elon Musk and his companies.

  3. Natalie says:

She has gotten to witness through history… timetravel?

    • tycho says:

Oh dear, you try to hard to shade her. It’s about what you learn about feminism through history books

      • Natalie says:

Lol, no one would have to try very hard to shade her. She’s Avril Lavigne for the Lena Dunham crowd.

The definition of witness is typically first hand experience. I have read about the signing of the Magna Carta but I did not witness it because I am not the Highlander.

      • kai says:

“Avril Lavigne for the Lena Dunham crowd” – I’m going to steal this one day, because it’s perfect.

Maybe Lana’s travelling with The Doctor?

      • Blackwood says:

        “To” : Preposition
        “Too” : Quantitative adjective

I don’t really know what “try to hard” means.

  4. jill says:

    Umm…so?

    • CT says:

I was thinking – who the hell is this?

      • LeAnn Stinks says:

She a “singer” who copped Chris Isaak’s sound and who’s rich daddy paid for her career and plastic surgery.

    • iLoveMyPug says:

Natalie…there was no option to reply to ur post but the Avril lavigne thing was an astoundingly Inaccurate analogy..honestly have u heard one of her songs..how the hell do u figure. And to the writer of this post…airhead? Really? That is a person that does not contain concrete thoughts..just because u disagree with what she’s saying does not mean she is an airhead.

  5. tycho says:

To translate to this Lana hater what Lana said:
    1. She is in post-feminism. For her the equality between man and women it’s a normality you don’t have to bring that up constantly. Because of that she’s focusing on other interests.
    2. She’s not a hypocrite to make out of feminism a marketing strategy like fake “feminists” like Beyonce or Taylor
    3. She acknowledged the contribution of feminists and she said that is more to be done in that area
MRA it’s a reaction dear to the feminist extremists so it’s obvious that you are the bigger “airhead” in this discussion.

    • StormsMama says:

“It’s a reaction dear” so you are the bigger “airhead”
Oh thank you MrA I mean MRA Tycho for clearing that up for all the ladies. It was like too confusing for us feminists.

    • Nicole says:

If your translation adds a bunch of stuff that wasn’t there in the original, it’s not a translation, it’s a rewrite.

Girl is kinda dumb. She has a very pretty voice. Get over it.

    • Leah says:

If she thinks she is living Post feminism that just shows how much she lives in her own bubble. Feminism is still relevant ( see the pay gap) and try telling people in certain parts of the world that they live in a post feminist world. Feminism is very much the privilege of the western woman. This is about looking further than your own nose.
Why do we have to distance ourselves from feminism because there exists extremist feminist anyway? Its like certain women are afraid to call themselves feminist, because they think its unappealing to men. Its such a misunderstanding, feminism literally means that you are in favour of equal rights for women. What woman in their right mind would say they aren’t?
The notion that feminism is a bad word is an uneducated view, largely a result of being fed this idea from the political forces who feel threatened by women having equal rights throughout history. Feminism in essence is civil rights for women.

      • Jonathan says:

Aw, I love Lana Del Rey though. “High by the Beach” is pretty good, I love “Born to Die” and listen to the dance remix of “Summer Sadness” every day- I was listening to it this morning on my walk to the train station.

I’ve spoken to women who think ‘feminist’ is synonymous with ‘radical separatist lesbian’. I don’t know they’re worried about what men think, necessarily, they’re kinda just homophobic.

But I am constantly, reliably depressed by how many women say they’re not feminists. Does not compute. I’ve never heard it from any other oppressed group “oh yeah, we don’t deserve equality”.

I’ve actually never had the explicit conversation with my own mother about whether she identifies as a feminist or not- I’m a bit scared to ask and am worried she falls into the homophobic anti feminist category (I’ve seen her turn her head away in disgust when she saw a female couple kissing on TV once). This despite that she raised ME as a feminist. I remember she gave me a horrified look when I brought a copy of “The Female Eunuch” home when I was 12 or 13, though, so I just never raised the topic with her.

  6. Moxie Remon says:

I think we should focus on somebody else.

  7. InvaderTak says:

Whatever. She seems to say whatever she thinks will make her look smart.

  8. serena says:

    Another ignorant fool.

  9. k... says:

Let’s stop bullying everyone who has a different opinion or outlook than our own.

She didn’t say anything wrong. It’s not what I believe, but that’s fine.

    • Josefa says:

I agree. My problem with PC culture is it promotes this idea of “because I think these things I’m a better person than you so GO ROT IN HELL YOU IGNORANT BIGOTED FOOL”.

I don’t agree with her, but I’ll save the hate for the Cosbys and Duggars out there doing truly evil and disgusting stuff.

  10. Ann says:

Rich white girls whose daddies buy them careers don’t identify with the struggle of women and how could they?

  11. Jayna says:

Her interviews are boring, but I still love Ultraviolence. And it’s nice to see a cover not photoshopped to death. I really love the lighting on the photo and you can even see the lines in her neck. I can recognize her on the cover unlike other covers of stars lately. I also like the fact she never went all super bobblehead skinny after stardom hit.

I wasn’t a fan of her first single, but I’m loving the latest song, Terrence Loves You, she released from the album. I do respect that she puts out the album she wants, with Ultraviolence and now with this new album.

  12. MsGoblin says:

That first picture of her looks like Priscilla Presley circa 1970.

  13. Leah says:

Emma Thompson should educate all these airheads. Miley, Lana, talylor and Nicki should all have to take classes in feminism and world issues. Emma needs to step in.

  14. bored says:

    dumb as rox

  15. kri says:

I wonder if she ever had to struggle for anything. Meh. But I appreciate the cool breeze her head provides. It’s quite hot where I live right now. She’s better than a Dyson fan.

  16. Tara says:

Racism and sexism is still very much alive. We still don’t have equal pay. The more these women distance themselves from the feminist word, the more they spit in the face of the movement.

  17. Nikole says:

She looks like current-day Priscilla Presley.

    • Nibbi says:

came here to say that myself. something like “she is beginning to strongly resemble priscilla presley, who still looks pretty good, at 60something” …

  18. Chinoiserie says:

Why every celebrity needs to be some feminst activist? She does think that most of feminst goals are accomplished abd you may disagree but that does not mean that there is something wrong with having a different view.

    • Naddie says:

But ignoring that many ( I even dare to say most) of feminist goals are not acomplished is just too much. How stupid and clueless a person like that can be? It doesn’t take much to realize it, she seems to be really stuck up in herself to think like that.

  19. MadMenluv says:

When will the media finally stop asking all these lame 20 something pop stars about their thoughts on “feminism”?

Why do they keep doing this?? A part of me is so that they can really ridiculous and dumb quotes from them because they never give the right answer…i feel like every time there’s an interview with some dumb actress or singer who takes themselves too seriously, the headline always reads “so and so and her thoughts on feminism” ugh i’m seriously about to puke!

  20. Rena says:

Said, the privileged white young girl that had to change her ENTIRE self (look, name, lips and all) because that was the only way to make it big in her industry, even with all the daddy’s money she had available to spend…
Lana can’t even see that her own carrier was affected by the gender inequality, and yet she chooses to open her mouth and dismiss the need for feminism as if this is a historical fact of the past that has nothing to do with her and the people of now.
Unfortunately, to claim that there is no need for feminism is not really just her opinion, it’s the very selfish and narrow minded opinion of someone that doesn’t have a clue, especially when poor women are still suffering the most around the world and even the most advanced societies are still all about misogyny. But I guess we’ll all soon have AI to save us (or kill us) you guys, and infinite energy to spend, so none of this really matters does it? Well guess what, it still does and it always will.

  21. leela says:

I wish journalists would just stop asking celebrities about feminism. Most don’t seem to know what the word means.

  22. lesbastardsmiserables says:

I’ve been conflicted about her for years but the other day I just gave in and decided that I like Lana, after hearing High by the beach & seeing the vid I decided I could get into it. I get why people don’t like her, and a lot of her music is boring to me but if I don’t want to listen to it I don’t have to. She’s had the balls to go and publicly do her own thing despite a fair amount of shit taking which is cool to me.

I like her dreamy persona, even if she’s kinda airy-fairy and it’s really contrived I think it colours pop culture a little bit as there’s not a hell of a lot of variety around in pop music.

  23. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

Whatever, Priscilla Presley! Geez, I’m sick of so many women being afraid of feminism. Are they all Rush Limbaugh fans or something? Ugh!
