Selena Gomez always felt awkward with her ‘husky voice’ but now embraces it

Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez continues to move past her unavoidable association with Justin Bieber, but he won’t let it go. After she made it clear that she’d like to move past being known as Bieber’s ex girlfriend, Swaggy himself is trying to keep the dream alive. He recently whined about how Selena broke his heart, which is all her fault even though he was stumbling out of brothels. There’s nothing more annoying than an arrogant guy who blames an ex for all his problems.

Selena has yet to respond (and hopefully, she won’t) to Swaggy’s latest public pleas for a reconciliation. She did take to Twitter recently to discuss something much more interesting. Selena says she was always worried that her voice was too low. She longed to sound more girly, but now she’s proud to sound different than everyone else:

“I was always insecure with my speaking voice because it’s so low. I never felt like it was feminine-sounding. I didn’t know it would be such an asset to who I am now, though. It adds a cool, personal quality. It’s exciting.”

[From Selena Gomez on Twitter]

Husky voices are awesome, and who wants to sound like everyone else anyway? I think female voices are much more appealing when they run towards the alto end of the spectrum. And it’s good that Selena feels more comfy all around these days.

Meanwhile, Selena’s new album art for Revival is slightly NSFW. She posed nude, and you can see the photo here. This is an artsy type of nude, and there’s nothing Terry Richardson about the picture. She looks like she stepped into a 1990s type of model session with the likes of Cindy Crawford and Christie Turlington. Thank goodness.

She is KILLING IT in that black dress. Live it, girl!

  2. Lensblury says:

Totally agree, she does look a lot like Cindy Crawford! make-up & posture. (edited comment)

  3. Jess says:

I used to be insecure about my voice too, but at some point realized that I can’t change it so why not embrace it! It’s part of what makes us all unique.

  4. Louise177 says:

I never thought anything of her voice. It’s her forever 12 face that bothers me.

  5. snakecharmer says:

she seems very poised and grounded. what she says in the press always sounds humble and she doesnt sound overly serious about her career. shes also georgous. when you compare her to someone like emily ratjakowski (sp) who publicly complains about her platform for success the difference is even more marked. also i love her style!

    • Franca says:

she doesnt sound overly serious about her career – why on Earth would this be a good thing?!

      • Naddie says:

Thank you! When I criticized Mila Kunis for not taking her career seriously (her words), someone mocked me saying she’s not a brain surgeon to do it. I was like, WTF?

  6. no9oooo says:

She’s dead to me since she let Jenny bear hug her.

Now people are going to hate me, but I absolutely love Selena Gomez. She can’t sing to well but she doesn’t sound bad, I love her recent song ” I want yo to know”. As for her voice, I don see anything wrong with her voice, it was her forever 12 persona she had. Now she is dressing her for age and looking feminine. She looks phenomenal.

Team Jelena forever…..did you see the Selena graffiti in Justins What do you mean video…first love will always win !! lol

    • word says:

He has “Selena” written in the background of the video for “What do you mean” and also “Where are you now Selena” is written in the background of the “Where are you now” video. I don’t know if this was done just to get people talking or if he still has genuine feelings.

  9. Crumpet says:

I always found her husky voice to be an intriguing contrast to her baby face.

  10. Yelp says:

Just listened to an interview of hers, am I the only one who doesn’t hear a husky voice?! She sounds perfectly normal to me.

  11. Masha says:

I always wanted a deeper voice, I sound like a chipmunk. I always cringe whenever I hear it, any higher and only dogs would be able to hear it.

I will never get used to the way this generation brags, or not just this generation, but people in general since social media exploded. Not bragging was ground into me from day one, so it always surprises me when someone talks about themselves in such glowing terms. I’m glad she embraced her voice, and I’m glad she thinks it’s cool. I’m just not glad that it’s ok to say so publicly. My nephew, who is in his 30s, just posted a series of shirtless gym photos. “Back day,” “chest day,” etc.. I was so shocked. Even my own family is turning into a bunch of narcissists. I wonder if modesty or humility will ever come back, or if you can’t put the toothpaste back in tube.

    • Crumpet says:

Interesting observation. The ‘not bragging’ can unfortunately turn into ‘you have nothing to brag about’ which in turn leads to low self esteem. I saw that a lot growing up. Perhaps this is the backlash. Everything see-saws back and forth, so I expect things to mellow for awhile before we go back to ‘no one is worthy’. Then rinse and repeat.

    • Beatrix says:

You know, I was just thinking the same thing. ” I didn’t know it would be such an asset to who I am now, though. It adds a cool, personal quality. It’s exciting.”” It’s exciting!? You find your speaking voice tone or timbre exciting!? And she’s not even talking about her singing voice, which is supposed to be what she has to sell. So strange. What if one of our friends called her own speaking voice “exciting” in regular conversation, would we not all find that strange?

    • Franca says:

It’s not just “this generation”. There were always people who liked to brag and those who didn’t. Unfortunately, the first ones now have a much bigger platform.

It also seems like a bunch of these famous people invent their insecurities ( maybe she is or isn’t one of them) just so they could say the overcame them, because that’s the cool thing these days and makes them more relatable. In my experience, people who actually had crippling insecurities don’t exactly like to talk about them.

Oh, and a guy could be the most handsome man ever, but if he posts a shirtless picture of himself, any attraction is gone.

    • TWINK says:

If people tell you you’re beautiful/intelligent/great/etc. all the time, it’d be disingenuous to claim not to think so. Better to be confident than to have low self-esteem.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

So, you brag a lot, too? Just kidding. Actually, I think there’s a happy medium. It was SO ingrained in me that I have always found job interviews torture. It’s really, really hard for me to talk about myself in those terms – I’m great at this and well versed in that, etc.. I don’t think I have especially low self-esteem, but I just find it so hard it’s really sort of ridiculous.

  13. Naddie says:

I don’t get this girl’s appeal in this site. I don’t even know why she’s famous, since she can’t sing, dance, act, perform, and looks like every girl in the street. To me she sounds like Demi Lovato: awkward girl trying to be cool.

    • Franca says:

Me neither. She’s cute but has no talent whatsoever and wouldn’t be nearly as famous if she wasn’t Justin’s ex and Taylor’s friend.

    • Mintessence (the original Minty) says:

Me three. Mediocre voice, no stage presence. Is this new confession some kind of humblebrag?

Her on-again, off-again relationship with Bieber kept her in the spotlight. Even if she distances herself from him, the link won’t disappear. It sure helps that she’s besties with Swifty.

Cute face, great hair, healthy body, and her personality doesn’t grate like some others. Are these the requirements to be famous? Instead of showcasing any discernible talent, to generate public interest she defaults to topless photos or does her bikini pap strolls, which seem as thirsty as the behavior of D-List reality tv types & social media famehos.

    • Chem says:

And also, she is a drug addict.
And Bieber didn’t cheat on her, I don’t get what is so confusing about it. Bieber and SG broke up many years ago but she kept talking about him and calling him, meeting with him for press and then telling him she didn’t wanted him which broke his heart (many times). When he was doing crazy stuff like the brothels, they weren’t together, he was really depressed, confused and suicidal.
Not a fan of Bieber but this is the truth.

  14. word says:

But why the need to be nude on the cover of her album? I don’t get it. Oh yeah I forgot, women only get attention now a days if they are naked…stupid me.

    • Otaku Fairy says:

If Adam Levine can be naked for his album cover, Justin Bieber can be half-naked for his calvin klein ads and butt naked on his instagram, and Lenny Kravitz can do publicized photographs of his d*ck rings, then Selena Gomez can certainly pose nude/ in her underwear on an album. My only hope for anyone is that they’re doing what they want to do, and not something that they feel forced to do.

      • Josefa says:

Yeah. The picture was pretty tasteful, too. I always liked that about Selena, she has managed to grow out of her Disney persona with a lot more class than most.
