Kit Harington says words about still being under ‘Game of Thrones’ contract

I’ve been avoiding covering this story like the plague for a few days now, just because the whole thing is based on an interview in a Dutch media outlet which was badly translated to English. Plus, we already KNOW that Kit Harington has been on the Game of Thrones set in and around Belfast for months. FOR MONTHS. Jon Snow is clearly still alive, in some form. Perhaps as Jon Stark, perhaps as Jon Targaryen, perhaps as Zombie King Jon Icecrystal. In any case, here’s the latest chapter in our ongoing series “Kit Harington Says Words.”

Is victory ours!? There’s a chance that Kit Harington – and those luscious locks – could be making a grand return to the HBO hit Game of Thrones, despite his character’s shocking death last season. The British actor may have spilled the beans about Jon Snow’s fate during a recent interview with Dutch magazine Humo.

“I had to pass on amazing parts because I was attached to Game of Thrones. So the show is like a double-edged sword to me: I owe a lot to it, but at the same time it has almost completely drained me,” Harington, 28, said. “Oh well, I try not to think about it too much. The important thing is that I now know exactly how long I am still under contract…”

But his revealing chat didn’t end there. Asked how many seasons he’s signed on for, he replied: “Nice try. I can’t talk about that. Let’s just say that Game of Thrones will remain a part of my life for a while, I’ll probably be in my thirties when it’s over. One thing’s for sure: the day I’m no longer on Thrones is the day I’ll bury myself in movie projects.”

As die-hard fans know (oh, the tears!), Jon Snow appeared to be killed off in the Season 5 finale. Harington opened up about the brutal scene during an interview with Entertainment Weekly after the dramatic episode aired in June.

“I kind of knew it was coming,” he revealed. “I didn’t read [George R.R. Martin’s novel] A Dance with Dragons. But I read the other books and I had heard this is what happens. So I had an inkling it should be this season,” he said at the time. “I didn’t realize it would be the final shot of the season and that made it extra special. It’s always kind of nice really when you’re the last thing that happens in that episode.”

Nevertheless, there were signs that Jon Snow may still be alive. Back in July, Harington was spotted walking around Belfast. According to New York Daily News, he was also caught on set during a battle scene in Saintfield, Northern Ireland last week.

Ugh, what is there to say at this point? I love how Poor Sadface Kit manages to whine a little bit about all of the film projects he has to refuse because of stupid Zombie King Jon Icecrystal. I mean, I think in his heart of hearts, Kit knows that playing Jon Snow will probably define his career for the rest of his life, and at this point, he’s not lighting the world on fire with his movie acting skills. But I’m not even that mad at him. He’s confirming that yeah, he’s probably still working on GoT and yeah, he’ll probably be there through the end of the series. Long live King Sadface!

Dear GRRM: I hope you’ve relaxed your rule about not writing during the football season, because the clock is ticking on the biggest GOT reveal yet. Can’t wait til April!

    • Masha says:

I didn’t realize he had a rule like that. Yeah, even if (and thats a big IF) GRRM manages to release the 6th book before season 6, I doubt he will be able to finish the series. I feel like the only reason he is working hard on TWOW is because of the tv series, so after the tv series is done, he will lose steam before he is able to finish the last book.

Also GRRM always came across as really naive to me, like I remember him saying that maybe the TV show could take a hiatus until he finishes the books, that made me LOL so hard. Game of Thrones is hugely popular, no way is HBO going to put it on hiatus.

      • Bridget says:

He won’t finish before the TV show. That ship sailed a while ago. BUT most likely the resolution of Jon’s cliffhanger is also going to involve the biggest reveal of the series (ie Jon’s real parentage and the story behind it) and it’s looking like unless book 6 comes out in March (which is kind of possible still) GRRM won’t be the one doing the reveal, the TV show will.

GRRM isn’t naive, he just hasn’t had anyone say no to him in a very long time. He’s spent the last 10 years enjoying the fruits of his success, but the man has simply never been that passionate about GOT and hasn’t been that driven to finish the series.

      • Masha says:

Oh yeah it’s impossible he will finish before the tv show, but I just doubt he is going to finish the books period. He seems more enthusiastic about his WildCard series. Fortunately (or unfortunately) my favorite characters have gone completely off their book storylines so I doubt the show will really spoil me, even if he doesn’t manage to release book 6 before the sixth season.

And the Jon Snow reveal is so set in stone, that I don’t really care who reveals it anymore, I just want people to stop speculating.

      • Bridget says:

Yep, you hit the nail on the head!

  2. NUTBALLS says:

He always looks like someone ran over his dog. Does he ever smile?

  3. Abbott says:

‘Nice try. I can’t talk about that.’ Promptly tells us everything.

  4. layla says:

His face is just so damn punchable.
    That is all.

  5. Sixer says:

He is the world’s biggest moaner!

  6. good buddy says:

Well, I think he just let us know that he will be in GoT for a long time. Good.

  7. paola says:

Stop playing dumb with us sister!
We all know Jon is not dead forever.

    • Abbott says:

How do you think it’ll play out? I’m guessing they’re going to try to burn his body on the funeral pyre and dude won’t burn.

(Have you been reading Watchers on the Wall? They have some semi-interesting info on scenes being filmed)

      And where is The Imf???

      • Rachel says:

Oooooohhhh. I like that idea, but I doubt they’d give that away so soon. That scene would probably break the internet.

      • paola says:

I think Mel is back to the Wall for a reason. I think Jon warged Ghost or the kid who killed him (sorry i can’t remember his name) and he’ll reborn as Jon Targaryen.
There is a crazy theory out there that I love.
        Jon might have a twin.

        Dun-dun-duuuun

      • Jenns says:

I love Watchers on the Wall. And yes, they had some pretty big confirmations lately.

As for how he will return, it would seem obvious that he will be reborn as a Targaryen, kind of the same way Dany didn’t burn when she walked into the fire. But how awesome would it be if after all this speculation, GRRM had a trick up his sleeve and something totally unexpected happens.

      • paola says:

        @Jenns

I really hope GRRM will come up with something totally unexpected. I can’t wait to see what happens next!

      • Abbott says:

@Rachel, they’ll have to address it in the first few episodes though, right? They have to burn the body soon. Also… *SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER LOOK AWAY*

……… They’re apparently filming episode 9 right now, which is a big battle scene involving Jon, the Wildlings, and the Boltons………..

@paola I still haven’t recovered from the twin theory. That would definitely explain the third dragon rider.

      • paola says:

        @Abbott
        I know.
Sorrry I know you’re not a fan but I love that theory.
That would maybe explain the valanqar as well?

      • Abbott says:

I thought Valonqar was a Lannister thing? I feel like my brain is so out of shape…

      • paola says:

I don’t think the Valonqar has to be a Lannister. I think it’s the youngest child in general. I was reading on reddit and i think people made quite clear that it could be anyone.

Yeah i feel rusty too. I can’t even remember the name of the kid that stabbed jon to death. And I’m too lazy to google it.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Oooh, Abbott, you think he’s a Targaryon?

      • Liv says:

I think Melisandre comes along and resurrects him like Beric Dondarrion is by Thoros. I’d hate if he gets back as a white walker, even if he’s a good one.

      • Bridget says:

I don’t love the twin theory either.

Also, it makes sense that there would be a big conflict between Jon and the Boltons. It was clearly leading up in the book though they’ve changed some elements in the show, obviously, and at this point that’s going to be one of the only ways they’ll get them out of Winterfell, which I still think is going to be key to the story (“There must always be a Stark in Winterfell”)

      • paola says:

        @Bridget

True. But at the moment there are no Stark in Winterfell.
I’d assume that Sansa has escaped. Or maybe she’s in a wheelchair in Winterfell with Theon.

      • Olenna says:

I vote for the Beric D resurrection, too.

      • Bridget says:

Sansa was never supposed to be the Stark in Winterfell, though. I think it was always supposed to be Jon, backed by the wildlings.

      • Abbott says:

I just want the Boltons to all die horrible, miserable deaths next season.

I *think* Theon makes is home, or at least that’s the assumption from filming rumors. Does that mean Sansa will be living on the Iron Islands?

@Bridget Winterfell Wildlings would make a great roller derby team name.

      • paola says:

        @Abbott

Am I wrong or Theon died in the books?
I think Theon and Sansa will try to reach the Wall first if Brienne can’t get to them first.
I think the Wall will be the safest place for them.

      • Jenns says:

I could see Ramsey killing his father and Walda. He knows their baby is a threat to his position.

As for Ramsey himself, I can see him sticking around a little bit longer. He is the only true villain on the show right now. Unless they decided to make The Night’s King new villain, but I’m still not convinced the walkers are totally evil.

      • Abbott says:

@paola I haven’t read the books, everything I know comes from the show, reddit, or you all 🙂 Didn’t GRRM preview a chapter for the next book written from Theon’s perspective?

@Jenns You’re probably right. Outside of Cersei, he’s one of the only villains left. I still think Sansa may be pregnant. And I also agree that the White Walkers are probably not evil; just have different motives.

      • paola says:

I think I got things mixed up. Brienne and Podrick are sentenced to die by Lady Stoneheart ( Catelyn) but in the end they don’t die. Or it’s not revealed if they’re dead hence they’re not. If your death is not registered in GoT it means you’re not dead.

      • Lucrezia says:

I like the Snow Wight theory.

So my guess is Jon gets made into a wight by the White Walkers, then “comes back” by warging into his zombie body.

    • Chica says:

PAola, The kid who kills Jon is Ollie. That disloyal bastard!

  8. Lilacflowers says:

    HODOR!

  9. Cee says:

Kaiser, I loved your King Sadface comment.
Now you can be either of three type of people – Normal Expression Face, Resting B*tch Face, and Resting Sad Face. I blame the Internet.

  10. Lilacflowers says:

    DROGON!

  11. Lilacflowers says:

    WUNWUN!

  12. mom2two says:

At this point, it’s the worst kept secret that he’ll be back. It’s bad form to have to talk about what you had to turn down in order to do the show that made you famous. It’s almost a given that any actor who is on a long, running popular show probably has had to turn down parts they really wanted due to their commitment to the show.

  13. EscapedConvent says:

Why does this poor little fella always seem to be about to burst into tears?

  14. Jenns says:

Sorry to hear about him having to pass on what was probably Pompeii 2.

  15. Betti says:

    Winter is coming!

And judging from the rain outside my office window, its almost here.

  16. sofia says:

He is not very good with words, diplomacy wise is he? Does he understand that he shouldn’t tell the media how he really feels about things? There’s a thing called “filter”.

  17. j.eyre says:

Wait – wait! There is another Zombie King Jon Icecrystal?

    *tears up name change application*

    • Abbott says:

Comments like this are why I love each episode of Kit Harington Says Words.

    • j.eyre says:

I am still petitioning to get Kit Harington Says Words to follow The McLaughlin Group…

… and to get him the extra “R” in his last name he so desperately needs.

  18. paola says:

    mimif where are you!
    Manifest yourself!

    • Cindy says:

I am late to the party and pretty sure everyone has left *sniff*, but if anyone comes back, could you tell me if the game of thrones books are as good As the show? I bought the first one and am not sure if I should take the plunge….

Kit is a little treasure isn’t he? I love it when he says words, it gives an excuse to talk about GoT.

      • paola says:

        Hey Cindy!
I am not a fan of GRRM’s writing. I find it too frumptuous and very slow.. too many names and so many subplots that you always have to be very attent while reading. The books are very engaging and even if i don’t like the writing style I still think they’re worth reading. GRRM is very imaginative, crude and sometimes pompous but still… the story is one of the best out there. Mainly for what he implies in it more than what actually happens. I don’t kow if i make any sense.. but in those books happens eveything and its opposite at the same time.

      • Bridget says:

Books 1-3 are awesome. 4 and 5 not as much, but at that point you want to know what happens.

      • Malificent says:

@Paola. Try his short stories. He’s a really solid writer — it just gets a bit lost in the epic doorstops of Fire and Ice.
