Jessica Simpson has been a boozy mess for a while. I mean, I doubt she was drinking during her back-to-back pregnancies, but other than that, Jessica has always loved to get boozy. Chica loves wine. She loves Scotch. She loves whiskey. She probably loves vodka too. So, there’s her history of loving the booze – set that aside for a moment. There’s also Jessica’s whole persona of the ditzy, mush-mouthed blonde. Even if she’s not drunk, she usually sounds drunk, like she’s struggling to really form words. Personally, I’ve always found that part of Jessica’s charm – even if she’s not a mess at one particular moment, she often SOUNDS and acts like a mess because she’s so ditzy and she has such a sloppy mouth.
So, Jessica appeared on the Home Shopping Network last night to shill some stuff from her Jessica Simpson Collection. The problem, perhaps, was that Jessica was asked to appear at night, prime drinking hours. I don’t know if she was tired (she wasn’t tired) or perhaps punch-drunk in the weird vacuum of HSN (she wasn’t), but she came across as… well, pretty drunk. She was slurring words, those are some drunk hands, and she was just a mess as she tried to describe the color grey as “sexy.”
I mean… I’m actually laughing. Is it unprofessional? Sure. But those poor HSN people have seen a lot worse. They’ve dealt with people like Mariah Carey before, you know? Jessica Simpson drunk on live HSN = not that bad, actually. She was maintaining even though she was pretty bombed. So… is this fine? It’s HSN, not PBS, you know? Jessica getting sh-tfaced on the Home Shopping Network was probably the highlight of their week.

I don’t really understand why she always gets a pass for being wasted in public. It’s one thing to be photographed stumbling out of clubs repeatedly, but she showed up to work hammered. Instead of everybody treating this as, “she’s so funny” maybe its time to wonder if she has a serious problem?
Yeah, I don’t get why being drunk on the job or out in public is deemed charming and funny just because she seems like a happy drunk. Unless you’re a teen trying to figure out or it’s a rare occasion, I don’t get getting drunk at all.
After watching that.. Wow. If that was a friend/neighbor/co-worker, I think each one of us would be uncomfortable and concerned. She’s not just drunk, she’s 4am wasted.

@captain: she signed a multi million dollar deal with Weight Watchers. It was literally her job to have people talk about her weight. No one forced her to do that.
I’m going to disagree here that she lost weight on pills. She is cut, and that doesn’t come from pill weight loss, that comes from working out, and working out hard. Whatever else you want to say about her, you have to give her credit for being in shape via exercise. That kind of muscle definition does not come any other way.

Exactly. My mom is an alcoholic and this is not funny or cute. She has a problem. She is trying to portray herself as a businesswoman (even though we all know she doesn’t run the clothing line, she wants us to think she does), and worse still, she has two little ones at home. I rather enjoy the comedy line-up HSN offers. Simpson has no filter, so she’s always good for giggles, but no one tops a Mariah Carey’s weep fest.

Adderall + booze doesn’t make you slur your words… if anything, Adderall takes some of alcohol’s effect away, making you more alert. It can be dangerous in that way, because you drink more without realizing you’ve had too much.
If this is due to pills, it’s definitely downers. Maybe she was nervous and took a Xanax or two? Her movements are a little like mine when I take a Xanax before a party, then forget and accept a drink and wonder why I feel so loopy.

Not sure why I’m even responding to this word salad, but let me tell you… depending on my antidepressants isn’t a luxury. It’s certainly a privilege — to have health insurance, mental health care, access to prescription medication — but without it, I’m not sure I’d be alive.
If I understood correctly, I think Swofty is saying s/he doesn’t have all the advantages Simpson does, including the money to self-medicate. But depression is a struggle for the rich and non-rich. It is a great equalizer. Unfair to suggest Simpson’s struggle isn’t legitimate because she’s rich.
In a world without health insurance, nore THE means to get Them, you just suck iT UP, be THE friend, THE Mother, THE daughter, THE co worker, and neighbor, you need to be.

Thank you, Stacey. By its very nature, depression makes it impossible to “suck it up”… impossible to do anything productive or beneficial. It doesn’t want you to get better; it wants you to know you’re worthless, period.
This mentality actually KILLS people, Swofty. In communities that don’t have access to mental health care, and in cultures that revolve around self-sufficiency and shame mental “weakness”, depression is deadly. Even when it doesn’t cause suicide, it causes unemployment, drug addiction, parental neglect, violence, malnutrition, and any number of self-destructive behaviors that weaken society as a whole. If you really think people CHOOSE this — choose not to “suck it up”, choose to wallow and suffer — then you have no real concept of what depression is. You can’t choose or think your way out of it; you need your mental faculties to do these things, and depression takes them away.

Have you seen Joel McHale skewer HSN clips on The Soup? It’s pure gold. I can’t imagine anyone taking these shows seriously… the regular hosts make absolutely no sense, just rambling for hours about whatever pops into their head. And it WORKS! People buy the stuff!

She’s started to gain the weight back. She was really slim or fit one year ago or so, but it’s clear she’s been hitting the bottle hard. Alcohol = calories.

The other day when she was on Today you could tell something was off. She was somewhat slurring and her eyes looked heavy. I thought pills right away. She has done a few interviews like this where she appears half lit.
Actually, she was on the Today Show about a year ago, as well. I remember watching THAT interview and wondering what was wrong. She was slurring her words and seemed a little “sleepy”. This definitely not the first time this has happened.

That was my first thought, too, but then I was like…shouldn’t she have that under control after all these years in the spotlight? Ditzy, yes, but she’s never struck me as having crazy stage fright or looked super uncomfortable to be the center of attention.
Sometimes pregnancy can trigger anxieties you’ve never had before… I don’t know, I’m just trying to give her the benefit of the doubt. I’d hate for Jessica to have a real problem. I’ve always rooted for her.

I immediately wondered if it wasn’t alcohol but rather some medication. Decades ago, I could hardly remember my own name after a prescription antihistamine at the full dose… I had to teach a physics problem session and can remember writing the famous formula F = ma(2) on the board, and had trouble getting past F = m … That was an amusing session for the students. My office partner said I acted drunk. (Cutting the dose in half was the fix, my adviser was three times my weight and was on the same full dose!)
It just seems unlikely that she deliberately got drunk just before a TV appearance to peddle her stuff. If she had a small amount of alcohol with something that ordinarily was safe, that could also make her quite loopy in some cases. Or she was taking something new and the dose was wrong for her.
